Re: the agony of it all

How often have Jack GARDINER ('61) and I grieved over the short
term, loss of contact with life-long friends. The Machiavellian
use of a single street [TWO -- Salem west of Spalding and
Williams east of Spalding] by the Richland School District of
tearing youth from the closeness of near familial relationships
can hardly be excused. Kids who are so close as to consider one
another siblings. Only a cold hearted, unthinking irrational,
group of faceless gubmint "officials" could even consider such
an act... such is a friendship of which I speak today. While we
lived less that a block apart, I would become a "Warrior" and
he would become... uhhhh... dang... whatever the "other" school
called themselves. [C'mon, I -- as a Carmichael Cougar --
should let this slide? -Maren] It would be a full 3 years till
we would be united. (Well in our case it would be 4 years as my
lease on a seat at Spalding was not renewed after my 5th grade
year... again a rather harsh result for the mistakes and
foibles of youth [this is all part of the story... I deserved
being asked to leave])... ah the shame of it all... years
later, when we were nearing our 50s Tony HARRAH ('65) and I
would approach the b-day Bomber's old digs, knock on the door
and inquire: "Can Terry come out and play?"... yes... as
with Richland friendships in general, ours has never dimmed...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Terry WERNER ('65) on your special day, July
20, 2017!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
