The kick-off party for Oktoberfest is this Thursday, with
the festivities to continue through Sunday, the 17th. If you
happen to be in the neighborhood, drop in and have some fun
and some good food. Not gonna tell ya where to eat, wouldn't
be prudent. I have may favorites, my wife has hers and
sometime we agree.

Whilst I was at the Club 40 "Whoop-de-doo" last Saturday, I
met a Bomber Babe who said she read my stuff here, but hadn't
mentioned. She also said she spent 22 years in the Air Corps.
I believed her, as she lived in North Richland. So, Peggy
SHANNON ('55), I mentioned you. Now what?

-Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) ~ Mount Angel, OR where
there is a remote possibility of rain this Friday' but
a better chance on the following Monday. Won't that be
	nice for O'fest clean-up folks.

Re: 9/11/2001

I should have sent this in yesterday, I guess.

On 9/11, I was in Albuquerque, NM with the Department of
Energy for a security briefing. The SECRET-level briefing was
on terrorist threats to the US. Bin Laden's name was in our
materials.

It was surreal to be called out of the terrorist threat
briefing to see the first tower on fire and, then, to see
the second tower hit.

Stuck there for a couple of days while the air traffic was
grounded, it felt like being back in Vietnam: I heard the USAF
fighter jets taking off and flying overhead-it seemed almost
constant. The commercial air traffic was silenced.

Re: Youth

When I taught high school, I had a parent ask me once if I
found my students moral or immoral. My response was simple:
I found a vast majority of my students AMORAL. No one ever
discussed morality, or ethics, or values at home.

That Fire: I read with interest the comments about the current
Gorge Fire and boy, did it take me back. Out at the end of
Swift, where "Honey Joe" now lives, used to be a large vacant
lot. A friend (who shall remain nameless) got some fireworks
for the 4th... the "illegal" lady finger type fire crackers.
We set that empty lot on fire. Worse was that the fire lt.
who responded knew who my father was. "You tell him, or I
will..."

The memory still surfaces every July.
