>>From: David DOUGLAS ('62)

My son Rodger has encountered numerous setbacks with his new
liver. The two anti-rejection medications caused his blood
sugar to increase, and it took several days experimenting
with oral meds and insulin to get it under control. Then his
potassium level rose dangerously, which could cause heart
failure. He had several other problems, but was supposed to
come home today (Friday).

However, the surgeon called at 6:15 this morning to tell us
Rodger was going back into surgery. He spent a very bad night
with severe abdominal pain, but the doctor couldn't find a
reason with a cat scan. When they opened him up, they found
he had pancreatitis, which put pressure on the artery going
to the new liver that caused the stitches to come loose.
The artery bled into his abdominal cavity until the blood
clotted, but the clot completely cut off circulation to the
liver. The doctor didn't know how long the circulation was
cut off, but said there will be damage to the new liver. He
won't know whether another transplant will be required until
Rodger's condition stabilizes.

Once that surgery was completed another doctor performed
surgery to place a stent into the artery at the juncture with
the new liver to prevent the splice from breaking again.

Also, Rodger's kidneys failed when his blood pressure dropped
due to the bleeding, so he's on dialysis as well, but the
doctor said that should clear up as soon as his blood
pressure is back to normal.

Whether he needs a new liver transplant or not, the doctor
said it will take weeks in the hospital and rehab for him to
recover enough to go home.

Thank you to all who have encouraged us.
