There are, on the Bomber calendar, at least two birthdays
worthy of note. So, let's have a great big "Happy Birthday!"
to Ann ENGEL ('63) and Alumni Sandstorm.

(an addition): For Don Sorensen (NAB):
 http://alumnisandstorm.com/Xtra/Sor/210729_00.htm

Think the railroad bridge over the Yakima River was built
before the 1948 flood. The old highway bridge (the truss
bridge) can be seen in the background. The flood wiped out
both highway bridges and left the railroad bridge intact. The
flood may have scoured out some of the railroad fill on either
side.

Re: Ranch Houses

The architect's floor plan for ranch houses actually said
there was a COAL BIN off the utility room. If memory serves,
there was even a removable "hatch" where Housing would dump
the coal in. We never used the coal furnace, but former
residents obviously did because it was really dirty with coal
dust. I cleaned it out and it became my little personal space.
We used electric space heaters. Speaking of ELECTRIC SPACE
HEATERS: That's how pre-fans were heated. That's my story and
I'm sticking to it.

Happy birthday to that OLD cheerleader of the '50s... actually
'52 and '53, I believe, even though it's a few days late
(Stan's birthday was 7/31), I'm thinking about you and that
other McDonald, you were so smart to wed. Come see me sometime
if you can get out of the confines of San Diego.

At a Club 40 Annual Meeting a couple of years ago, I met a
young lady who dasted me to mention her in the Alumni
Sandstorm. I took the bet and have continued since. So,
"Happy Birthday!" to Peggy SHANNON ('55)

Re: Pre-fab heating

In the 3 bedroom version there were, I believe, six electric
heaters. One was a two-burner mounted in the bathroom wall.
There was one semi-portable two burner units in the two
smaller bedrooms. The "master" bedroom, the living room and
dinning room each had a semi-portable three burner unit. By
semi-portable, they could be un-plugged from the wall socket
and plugged into any other proper wall socket, and they could
be positioned within the limits of the electrical cord. To the
best of my recollection, there was no heater in the kitchen;
guess the stove was to take care of that. Surprisingly, they
would keep the house fairly warm on even the coldest day.

have no knowledge of heating arrangements in ranch

Re: Riverland Classification Yard
 http://alumnisandstorm.com/Xtra/Sor/210802_00.htm

To: All Bombers

I used to think B Reactor, 37.2 miles, was the furthest point
Hanford busses delivered workers. Apparently I was wrong,
Riverland Round House and Classification yard 42.8, takes the
prize. There was only day shift 7:48 to 4:18 it consisted of 1
foreman, 7 diesel electric locomotive mechanics and 1 service
man. Patrol was there 27/7 and the couriers where when they
had cargo to shepherd.

All maintenance and decontamination of locomotives was carried
out and provided water for steam engines. When steam locos
were phased out I have no idea I would guess sometime before
1950.

Other information, utilization of train crews 47% Power (coal
deliveries), 37% Production (reactors) Separations (T & B
Plant), 6% Community (?), 5% Purchasing & Stores and 5% Design
& Construction. These numbers are from Oct '49 to Feb '50.
This workforce averaged 1800 cars a month, without them and
others working in harmony Hanford would flounder.

Some "Happy Birthday!" wishes to fellow classmates Sandra
STURGIS and Bill SEEBURGER (both 54).

And a note for Don Sorensen (NAB), dont believe Hanfords
railroad had any steam engines. The steam engines that
operated in the area were those of the delivering roads and
mostly Milwaukee (CMStP&P) in the beginning. The two diesels
(ALCO RS-1) models were of the proper age to be on the
property as new.
