A. S. S. ~ Alumni Sandstorm ~ 01/30/25 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 9 Bombers sent stuff: Bob JOHNSON ('54) Mike CLOWES ('54) Grover SHEGRUD ('56) Jim RUSSELL ('58) Carol CARSON ('60) Connie MADRON ('60) Dolores MOODY ('60) Pete BEAULIEU ('62) Terry DAVIS ('65) ******************************************************** HOME ADDRESS: Maren Smyth 144 Briant Street Gretna, LA 70056 FROM THE EDITOR: I sit at the computer and about all I can get is 2.5 hours before my back starts telling me to go lay down. It's frustrating cuz I used to sit in this chair almost 24/7. There's a change on the dead Bombers in the Sandstorm. Joe CAMPBELL ('67) has been working on the two pages of dead Bombers (the total Alpha list and the By Class Year list). What he's done for me now is list those who have died from October through January... see the link below the Sandstorm entries. That way I don't have to list them all in the Sandstorm and I can concentrate on entries... maybe even get a Sandstorm more often than once or twice a month.... we'll see. -Maren ******************************************************** >>From: Bob JOHNSON ('54) Norma LOESCHER's ('53) experience of the Brownie Box camera was a centerpiece in the lives of many of our ancestor's leading up to the present. The attached reminiscences of my mother, Esther Taylor Johnson (1910 - 1999) offers confirmation of its importance in our family history, composed six-months short of her exit. I imagine her reference to ancestral adjustments are not all that uncommon, especially the part about resettling. As a people, we have yet to reconcile this phenomenon with the inhabitants already living on this continent. It's a slow process, but I hope my great- grandchildren (four at present) will have seen success in this regard by the time they reach her age (nearly my own as I write this). -Bob JOHNSON ('54) ******************************************************** ******************************************************** >>From: Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) For 1/27: Keeping the tradition started by the Junior Gyrene ('65-RIP) many years back; here's a "Happy Birthday!" to ML ('53). For 1/25: A "Happy Birthday!" wish for fellow classmate Sue FARLEY ('54). Just hope you don't get carded trying to buy wine at Safeway. You begin to wonder if you don't look old enough. For 1/13: Hats off to fellow classmate, Bill WENDLAND ('54), for making it to yet another birthday. "Happy Birthday!", Bill. For 1/5: A "Happy Birthday!" to fellow classmate Roger McCLELLAN ('54). Trust things are doing o.k. In the "Duke City". For 12/30: He's done it again. Fellow classmate Phil GANT ('54) celebrates yet another birthday. "Happy Birthday!", Phil. For 12/27: Now is the time to wish Jeannie HUGHES ('54) a "Happy Birthday!" If you see her, please do so. For 12/18: I would really be remiss if I did not wish fellow classmate and home room "prisoner" a "Happy Birthday!" So, Carole CLARK ('54) you got it. For 12/16 Wouldn't ya know it; two birthday greetings for the price of one. One is a fellow classmate mate whom I "vaguely" remember. The other being a younger actor. So, "Happy Birthday!" to Arlene THRESS ('54) and Terry DAVIS ('65). For 12/15: The Bomber Calendar gave me the information that I should wish fellow classmate Dorothy STAMPER ('54) a "Happy Birthday!". Guess I've done that. For 12/3: Holy mackerel! It's that time of year when we wish Bill SEEBURGER ('54) a "Happy Birthday!" So, let's do it. For 12/1: Definitely it is time to wish fellow classmate Pat NORDMAN ('54) a "Happy Birthday!" Well the calendar indicated such. For 11/27: By golly, fellow classmate Gene STEPHENS ('54) is having a birthday today; "Happy Birthday!" Hope this finds you in reasonable health. The more that time passes, the more I think Bette Davis was right when she alleged said that "old age ain't for sissies." For the rest of you, try not to overindulge on the morrow. Rumor has it that there is more tryptophan in dark meat. For 11/19: Time to wish Bruce SCHOENROCK ('54) a "Happy Birthday!" Trust this doesn't fall through any cracks. For 11/11: A "Happy Birthday!" to fellow classmate and Thespian Bob JOHNSON ('54). Trust you are still wielding the baton whilst blowing the horn. Since it is Veteran's Day, formerly Armistice Day, a hearty "Bravo Zulu" to all Bombers who have or are currently serving. For 11/8: If I did not acknowledge this birthday, I would have to turn in something. Here's a "Happy Birthday!" to Dona McCLEARY ('54), and hope this finds you well or what passes for well at our age. I also hope this will keep your biker husband off my back for another year. For 11/2: What better time to wish Norma LOESCHER ('53) a "Happy Birthday!" If it were any other time, one would have to wish a "Very Merry Un-Birthday!" I suppose that makes sense. For 11/1: They do slip up on one, but it is an annual event. In that light; "Happy Birthday!" to fellow classmate Jim(my) MEFFORD ('54). For 10/28: At last, a new Alumni Sandstorm. Good to hear from the usual suspects, and sorry to see the growing list at the bottom. Hopefully, there's good news in wishing Anna May WANN ('49) a "Happy Birthday!" Trust the day finds you well. For 5/17: Here's a "Happy Birthday!" shout for Garth WHEELER ('54). Trust it won't fall short. For 5/8: Could let the day go past without saying "Happy Birthday!" to fellow thespian Jim McKEOWN ('53). And, by the way, have anothe birthday next year. For 5/6: It is time to wish Barbara KRAMER ('54) a "Happy Birthday!" She's worked hard to earn it. For 5/5: Time to wish Patti COLE ('52) a "Happy Birthday!", as I am sure all her siblings are doing. For 5/2: If the calendar is anything to go by, a pair of fellow classmates are getting a "Happy Birthday!". Way to go Joan PHILLIPS and Jack NICHOLS (both '54). Who knows, we may all meet at the next reunion. For: ?? Gotta take the time to wish fellow classmate Betty WHITTEN ('54) a "Happy Birthday!" And to remind her that age is supposedly just a number. If you believe that one, there's an aging blue bridge I'd like to sell. For 4/24: A "Happy Birthday!" to Rex "Pat" WOOD ('54). Please don't confuse him with Eugene "Red" WOOD ('54 R.I.P), it just ain't fair. -Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) ~ Silverton, OR ******************************************************** ******************************************************** >>From: Grover SHEGRUD ('56) Re: Grover Shegrud's status Still vertical but hobbling. Back in Washington again after a 3.5 year adventure in Verginia and North Carolina. Am now living in Birch Bay, WA in a fairly small RV trailer while different world. Between my wife and I have had 8 children though my eldest Melody passed away this year (and yes that was the most terrible time I've gone through). We've been to Richland a couple time since we have have been back so many things have changed in the last 68 years. Our old "A" house 1320 Stevens drive still stands. The only 1956 grads I gotten together with was Ken HEMINGER ('56) about 3.5 years ago. Did get to drive in the timing races at the Tri City Race Way last week WOW!! I an see what I'm writing, but I need my magnifying glass to read the drop-down boxes in Word. Ah, the tribulations of macular degeneration AND gaucoma! [Jim, My problem isn't Maacular degeneration or glaucoma. My grandmother had glaucomas. Not sure if that's why they always check me for that or not. When Bill Gates can't read the WORD drop down menus, I suspect weaselsoft will fix that problem. -Maren] Cheers, -Jim RUSSELL ('58) ******************************************************** ******************************************************** >>From: Carol CARSON Renaud ('60) Re: So happy! I loved seeing the Sandsrotm in my inbox today! Sorry to see so many classmates lost! I hope to move back someday! -Carol CARSON Renaud ('60) ******************************************************** ******************************************************** >>From: Connie MADRON Hall (Proud Richland Bomber! Class of '60!) Re: Why I Can Always Find My Car in a Parking Lot Sixty four years ago, fellow classmate John HALL ('60-RIP) and I were married at West Side United Protestant Church, jumped in my car ('58 yellow and white Ford convertible) and drove out of town to San Diego where he began college at San Diego State. I went to work in the shipyard, transferred from my boss in the 100-N Area. Many, many years have passed, as did John on March 28 this year. We had a wonderful, exciting life and at 82 have always been proud to be a Richland Bomber. With our Richland Bomber license plate holder on our car, I have never had any trouble finding it, even at Costco! 🙂 http://alumnisandstorm.com/Xtra/Mad/BomberPlate.MOV -Connie MADRON Hall ('60) ******************************************************** ******************************************************** >>From: Dolores MOODY Stewart ('60) Maren, good to hear from you! I had the laser treatment this summer and was amazed and so pleased with the results! -Dolores MOODY Stewart ('60) ******************************************************** ******************************************************** >>From: Pete BEAULIEU ('62) To: Captive Audience readers Re: Octogenarian status Yours truly has paused at other Bombers ruminating on the various details of their more interesting lives. But having turned 80, lo, already this year (July 22), I now thusly counsel others of my ilk: we become marginal at the age of 70 and apparently invisible, and at 80 (!) we've entered the transporter into a new universe! The deed is done?and all that comes after is extra credit! Moreover, no one asks anything of us fossils, and so we do nothing to disappoint their expectations. But, feelin' good, here. Blessed with no problems of any sort, and still eager to hit the bike trail a couple times a week. Dropped my blood pressure by 50 points back into the normal range, by simply skipping red meat and scarfing down blueberries, avocadoes, oat meal, almonds, and red wine with slightly smaller dinners. Check it out. Some short car trips and family gatherings, recently. Since fluorescent lights are illegal in Washington state (the energy thing), two weeks ago and for a friend, also turned 80 in late June, I picked up a lifetime supply from across the border in Coeur d'Alene. There, also dropped in unexpected on a niece at their new home, and her three and a half little ones. Only to find that her mother, my ageless sister-in-law, had dropped in half-hour earlier, also unexpected. And, then, that a niece-in-law (visiting for only the day from south of Lewiston) was also in town to watch one of her teen daughters in a soccer game. So, we all congregated at the high school site in nearby Post Falls, ID including five more next-generation little people, nieces and nephews ages two to twenty. At the field they shared their snacks with their favorite and loud-mouthed octogenarian uncle. That's how it sometimes works. A spontaneous family reunion organized around a raid across the blue and red border for some illegal light fixtures. The trip back to Seattle was uneventful, except for the benefit of trailing behind a fast 18-wheeler to cut down the wind resistance. From the Vantage rest stop over the Cascades to my home?still about 140 miles?my 2017 Subaru Forester clocked in at over 42 mpg. Unlike several recent SS contributors, a few years ago I considered downsizing back to Richland, also for family reasons. But Hanford is my birthplace and last time I checked there's not much there. I recall a Hanford Reservation open gate in around 1960, and my standing on the weedy concrete floor of what had been probably the hospital. Great view, though, of the White Bluffs fossil beds and the windswept vastness. The empty- windowed Hanford High School?what's left of my real hometown?makes a famous photo. http://alumnisandstorm.com/Xtra/Bea/HanfordHS.jpg -Pete BEAULIEU ('62) ~ So, yes, all is well right here in stick-in-the-mud Shoreline, despite the proximity to sinkhole Seattle as the uncontested graffiti capital of the Western Hemisphere. ******************************************************** ******************************************************** >>From: Terry DAVIS Knox ('65) Re: It's A Wonderful Life WonderfulLife.jpg Re: Fool For Love FoolForLove.jpg TDK '65 -Terry DAVIS Knox ('65) Sent from my Samsung SmartPhone ******************************************************** END OF SANDSTORM ENTRIES.
