"Reach out to your neighbor . . . make a donation to your charity of choice. Most of all -- sustain this spirit of America at its best." Concerned Boulder residents are doing just that- and their charity of choice is the Red Cross. On Saturday, September 29th from 10am to 6pm at the Glen Huntington Bandshell in downtown Boulder, this event will provide an opportunity for the Boulder community to contribute to the healing of our local and national communities in the wake of unprecedented disaster. A full day of events is scheduled, including local bands and other live entertainment, children's activities, a bake sale, massage, and public speakers. According to Rita Haugland, the event organizer and self-described "concerned citizen," the event is as much about bringing the Boulder community together as it is about raising money for the Red Cross. "We need to bring people together just to be together," she says, "and to deal with our feelings of sadness, anger and helplessness in a responsible way." She notes that while the events themselves will be free to all (optional donations encouraged) all the money raised from vendors at the event will be donated to the Red Cross as well. The Red Cross will also be collecting materials for "comfort kits" containing travel-size toiletries. The list of items requested follows this release. Tracy Cottrell, of the Denver Red Cross chapter, says that Boulder residents have already expressed a lot of support. "The Mile High Chapter, including the Boulder Branch Office, has received 9,000 phone calls from concerned citizens," she says. "Some call looking for information about loved ones still missing from the attacks. Many call to speak with one of our crisis counselors. And thousands call just to ask how they can help. The outpouring of generosity is incredible." Some of the local acts appearing at the Boulder Red Cross Benefit Jam include a Tibetan dance troupe, Saturn Rising, Bambi's Apartment, Blackdog, Acoustic Semi, Daddy Stovepipe, and Sucker. Other special guests TBA. The Glen Huntington Bandshell is located at the intersection of Canyon and Broadway (adjacent to the Farmer's Market).
