******************************************** Additional Text for the 09/21/04 Alumni Sandstorm ******************************************** >>From: Betty Hiser Gulley ('49) I have had breast cancer twice. At all the meetings, conferences, etc., I attend I always remind the women and MEN that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Please have a mammogram - not for your family but for YOU. Both of mine were caught early and if I make it until the end of this year I will be a cancer survivor (9 years for the first and 5 years for the second one). When I was going through chemo I was in a room with a man who was having chemo. He told me his greatgrandmother and her two sisters died of breast cancer, also his grandmother and her two sisters. His mother and two sisters also had breast cancer but with more modern methods they have managed to make the cancer survivor list. He went to his doctor at age 30 (he looked to be in his mid-50s) and told his doctor that he wanted to have a mammogram. The doctor did everything but roll on the floor with laughter. He told the doctor if he did not schedule him for a mammogram that he would get a new doctor. He went in every 5 years until he reached 50 and started going in every year. Sure enough he developed breast cancer. I found out that there are 27 different types of breast cancer (I've only seen 3) and that 10 percent of breast cancers are men. It is especially important if there is breast cancer in his family. Bomberettes: If you have a male in your life that has a history of breast cancer in his family kick his butt and make sure he has a mammogram each year after age of 50. Bomberettes: You too. After the two breast cancers I now collect hugs. I received lots and lots of hugs at the Club 40. Thanks to everyone that gave me a hug. October is fast arriving - schedule your mammogram. Sorry to preach - but the sooner they find it the better your chances are for survival. -Betty Hiser Gulley ('49er) ~ south/government Richland - nice cool weather. Supposed to get up to 80 in the next 2 or 3 days. ********************************************
