******************************************** Additional Text for the 10/25/04 Alumni Sandstorm ******************************************** >>From: George "Pappy" Swan ('59) To: Frank Whiteside ('63) I agree with your information on gun carrying and transporting. Here is an additional point that some of those who have permits to carry concealed weapons tend to overlook, especially in Washington. As I understand the law, a permit to carry requires that if the gun is loaded, it must on your person. Having it loaded and in the glove box, under or on the seat in a vehicle is not authorized by the permit. What is the title and who put out the pamphlet that you mentioned? Re: Further thinking on Gun Control Seems to me that we already have sufficient laws on the books regarding guns. If those who use guns when committing any crime were dealt with more firmly according to those existing laws without the leniency that always seems to creep into the application of these laws in the courts, additional gun control laws are unnecessary. Stronger deterrents are needed. Far more people are killed by automobiles than guns every year. If people continue to kill each other while misusing automobiles, simply taking away their driver's license or automobile does not solve that whole problem. Look how often we hear of those violators who are eventually caught that are repeat offenders because they just went out and acquired another vehicle and drove anyway often at the expense of some Innocent person's injury or loss of life. Likewise, "If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns." And, while I'm thinking on it, how about the increasing problem of overly aggressive drivers. Be it road rage or just inconsiderate self-centeredness, they endanger the safety and lives of their own passengers (many times their own spouse and children) and other drivers. A gun is a tool as a vehicle is a tool. Both should be operated safely and according to the law. In both cases, violators should be prosecuted. I am constantly amazed when a driver recklessly passes, speeding and winding in and out of traffic only to end up sitting just ahead or beside me when I reach the next traffic light. I personally know some who profess very much to be against guns but flagrantly operate their vehicle in a manner that turns it into a dangerous weapon. Go figure. I'm still pondering. -George "Pappy" Swan ('59) ********************************************
