"The Reunion"

The last time I saw them we were young.
Ginny was a cheerleader. Ben was getting
A's in trig. Tonight we glance at name tags.
Around the cheese tray we say, "Of course
I remember you." "Yes, four years ago.
Things are better now." "No, she never
graduated, moved. I don't know where."
We look good. The food is just fine. The music
brings it all back and we dance the latest steps
across our brain's prom floor. It's all the same.
And nothing is. We're still dumb kids, just gray
and tame. If we had to do it again, we'd get it
right. Some are sure they got it right the first
time. They ask for another Manhattan, dry
martini, scotch on the rocks. They glisten
in their tans. They watch the rest of us,
the ones with comb-overs, two divorces,
the ones who look for lower gas prices,
a good night's sleep, group tours.
The forever young and always lovely Miss Nancy ('65) and I had a
very nice weekend in Richland, seeing old friends and being 16
again. One of the highlights was seeing my Birthday Buddy and
fellow cancer survivor Steve SIMPSON ('65) looking and feeling
so well. Thank you to everyone who attended and especially those
who worked so hard to make the event happen.

so at the very beginning I gotta say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Richard
ANDERSON ('60) and Pappy SWAN ('59) on July 1, 2010... and
Pappy... your leg tingling story about Sharon TATE ('61wb-RIP)
was worth the trip to Richland all by itself... good to know
Mr. Briggs gave us all a place to find romance while we were in
his class, tho I don't think he ever made Darlene ('64) and me
leave the room!
OK I do know I'll forget a ton so I'll try my best on this
little piece... DAVIS ('65) and I rolled into town at around 7:45
in the evening and were at the DQ to find about 10 times the
people and cars as last year... wow... MADDY ('67) and WEAR ('68)
were there with huge grins... korse I met the ADAIRS ('65-
67;'70;'08) but got a call from a bunch of the Boyz to come to
the Town Crier (is that the name?)... Cecilia ('65) joined us all
there as the only girl Sorry 7 in the bunch... (surrounded by
boyz ain't all that bad when yer a Bomber-babe who still looks
like her Senior picture)... I called ML ('63) to see what she
and Ellen ('63) had planned and learned that they were relaxing
at Ellen's sister Myra's ('67)... so just hung around for the
delicious food... Luckily, I didn't have to rush over to check in
as Kenny DAME's ('68) lovely lady Jennifer personally delivered
my key... (siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh)... so as best I can recall (after
several Iced teas) I turned in for the night looking forward to
Spudnuts in the morning and activities thereafter...
Well, clearly I wasn't on everyone else's time schedule as I
received several calls to get my fanny to the Spudnut shop and
was chided by Val ('72) for being "late"... Bomber-babe Jeanie
WALSH ('63) was already there with the Adairs to greet me as I
rolled in around 9... SIMPSON, WARFORD, WERNER, NALDER, POWELL
and the other '65ers were ready for some action and it was
planned that we'd head for Simpson's for a little swimming (who
has a pool when you live by 3 rivers??)... no one ever made it
to the swimming but we did all gather at the School for sign
in... ah but before that little trip I hadda run over to Gus
KEENEY's ('57) to meet brother Jackson ('65) and pick up my
Chief Joseph carving... for those who saw it, you will agree it
was breathtaking... for those who didn't I'll try and remember to
take pix after UPS brings it to me... I ran into Roy ('63), Ms
HOFF ('64), Linda BELLESTON Boehning ('63) and Dick ('63) and
Jack GARDINER ('57) along with a ton of other kids at sign
up... I was asked about that time if I'd be the announcer for
the B-ball games the next day... now little did they know that I
don't know a b-ball play from a golf shot... so I gotta say the
lack of chatter during the game was rather deafening (tho time
keepers WEBB ('64) and FISHBACK ('62) did help me distinguish
between a chip shot and a free throw)... after sign in we were
treated to a wonderful Chile dinner and I'm not sure if Mr.
Gardiner ever got to even taste it as he was pressed into
service (again) as a server... but it was service with a smile...
Saturday was the car show and it was grand... I did make it to
the Spudnut earlier and met Jimbeaux ('63) and crew... at 11 we
all (sans Jimbeaux) met at the gym for the "picture"... now for
those of you who recall R2K and the picture on the field, there
were a ton of people in that picture and you would be lucky
to pick one from another... this year was a little different
and we all stood on an "R" in the gym... tho I can't say that
uncle Burt's ('59) directing took any less time than it did
in 2000... we finally got enough people to fill up the R and
the picture turned out really great... at some point before
dinner, Mary Lou and Ellen confessed that they had been having
"thoughts" about me before they headed for Richland... so much
so that they purchased some VERY sexy lingerie for me and even
personalized it... well, most of you know just how straight laced
I am and I refused to model it for them... I mean I do have my
pride ya know... the b-ball game was a blast in spite of my
lack of knowledge on what was going on down on the floor... we
were notified when Number 92 [Emma LARSON Kleinknecht ('36 COLT)]
left the building and gave her a standing ovation... the catered
dinner was just great and we all had a wonderful time in the
"cafe" licking our fingers and downing kool-aid... (poor choice
of words... lemonade)... after, several of us retired to the DI
patio for refreshments and hours of fun talk... David HANTHORN
('63) decided we needed a huge "Big Kid's" table and so the noise
level grew as people tried to speak across the table... I know I
left around 11:30 and the more grown up kids didn't leave till
after 1 AM... Sunday several of us met for breakfast before kids
hadda get on the road... Ray (Number 10 '64) made his appearance
both Saturday and Sunday with his lovely wife and they both
seemed to have a great time as did we all... the pic-nic was
small to say the least and eventually I hadda get on that big
bird back to Vegas... .tired but full of wonderful memories of
another great event!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks to everyone... I loved it!

so? My computer froze solid. The computers at the VA were down
for the better part of the day. Even the big box store I took my
computer to was having problems with their system. Any other

Re: Just another birthday?
Sixty nine, 69, sixty plus nine, six decades plus nine years,
half a century plus nineteen years... I have thought about it,
printed it, written it, typed it, and looked at it ... right
side up, upside down, and all-around. But, it always comes out
the same, no matter how I look at it ... I am now ... 69 years
old!
For a guy who never really expected to live past 30, it's,
well,... downright mind-boggling! When I was a kid, growing up
on the corner of Wright and Symons streets in Richland, I had
friends living nearby, whose mother, to me, was pretty good
looking for an "old woman". She was about 32, or so, then. Now,
here I am... over twice that, looking in the mirror each
morning, wondering why my gramps is looking back at me, and
mumbling the words (like that old "cop or state patrol" radio
program, when we were kids), "Pappy, COULD THIS BE YOU?"
But, as many of us aging Bombers often say, "it really does beat
the alternative." So, I will relax today and go along with the
(so far) natural progression of things, and living life. My
lovely wife, Jeanne, who robbed the cradle, turned 70 on June
2nd. Therefore, for the last month, she has actually been 2
years older than I. However, she is splurging by taking me to
"Granny's Buffet" today, for my free birthday lunch. There
really is such a thing, as a ... "free lunch"!
Actually, when I was a teenager, I read a book. I think that the
title was, "In Praise of Older Women" or something like that. It
stirred a young man's wild imaginative processes, and stayed
with me, over the years. So, I didn't stand a chance when a
waitress smiled at me almost 28 years ago. Our anniversary is
July 9. It all seems to come together, for both of us, about
this time of the year.
Anyway, 69 years is sort of a milestone, so I thank all who
extended birthday wishes, but I really am looking forward to
reaching 70, because then ... I qualify for the cheap Washington
State Fishing License! But, you watch, it will be my luck that,
since the state is in a budgetary crisis, they will do away with
the senior discount ... next year.
New subject:
After I made fellow Marine and Bomber friend David Rivers's
birthday write-up in the Alumni Sandstorm, several have written,
asking, "Okay Pappy, what's the story about you and Sharon TATE
('61wb RIP)???"
Well, first of all, allow me to say that, this is a true story!
No fairy tale, no sea story, and not even an old man's lingering
imagination of his adolescent youth. True story! In view of what
happened to Sharon, I kept this to myself for a long time, out
of respect for her, and her memory. I told it to a few Bombers
last year on a Club 40 tour of the school campus, when we were
in Mac Hall, where it took place.
Now, I am an old man, and many years have passed, so when some
of us were looking at my senior annual for the Class of 1959 at
the R2k+10 All Bomber Reunion, Burt PIERARD ('59) asked if the
fold out page titled "activities" and showing the Homecoming
Royalty was still in my annual, as it was missing in some
others. It was loose, but still there, and as several of us
looked at the pictures of all the lovely young lasses, including
Sharon TATE, I decided that enough time had passed, and I could
now tell the following "Happy Days" story to all:
This took place, one day, in Mr Briggs's Spanish class. I was a
senior, and Sharon was a sophomore. I sat in the front of the
closely-spaced rows. Sharon sat beside me, on the right side, if
my fading memory still serves correct, because to fit into a
student desk, one entered it and sat down from the left (self
explanatory in a bit). I was not the best of students, I was not
the worst of students, but I tried to maintain as much of a low
key presence as possible. Perhaps that had something to do with
Mr. Briggs seating me right in front of his desk.
I was sitting there, feigning devout attention to Mr. Briggs's
enlightenment on the Spanish Language, and how to declare in
Spanish, "Oh what a pity, my yellow pencil is broken," or
something to that effect. Now, allow me to digress, momentarily,
to confess that, when possible ... I would sneak peeks at
Sharon. Well, I was a bashful, backwards adolescent, but I was
indeed, a red-blooded, young, American lad. And, no doubt,
Sharon was well aware of my efforts at clandestine peeking, as
she was undoubtedly also aware of just how self conscious I was.
She showed no mercy! Allow me to illustrate this fact.
So, I'm sitting there, looking straight ahead at Mr Briggs, but
"very" aware that Sharon had turned sideways in her desk,
crossed her legs, and was sitting there facing "me". Also, she
often removed her shoes, which she had done that day. Did I
mention that she had very attractive nylon stockinged feet?
Anyway, up until then, all was calm, and a normal state of
affairs reigned in the classroom. But then, something
extraordinary began to take place.
I suddenly felt something rubbing my ankle, venturing up my
lower leg, and into the inside of the leg of my blue jeans. A
mouse? No, not possible there in the classroom, but that's what
it felt like. I maintained and stared straight at Mr Briggs, who
seemed quite impressed that I was, for once, paying attention.
When speakers, and I suppose teachers, find a friendly or
attentive face in their audience, they often tend to focus upon
it. So, Mr Briggs is looking at me ... a lot, oblivious to what
is taking place on my lower extremity. This rubbing on my ankle
continued. In fact, it increased in intensity and pressure, and
began to move up my leg, inside my pants leg. "What the ...?"
was all I could think.
Out of the side of my bulging right eye, I became aware of the
mischievous, but beaming smile on Sharon's face. "Oh Lordy!"
Soon, I became aware of what was happening. "Oh ... my God!" I
felt my face flush hot, as I knew it was turning beet red! My
pulse rate shot upwards, and I am certain that my chest must
have been flexing big time, in and out, to accommodate my
rapidly beating heart, along with heavy breathing. Heck, I was
probably hyper ventilating, and I didn't even know the meaning
of the word, back then.
Sharon was sitting there, actually torturing me, by running her
stockinged toe up and down my leg, and up under my jeans. "Holy
...!" I don't know if I blurted that exclamation out or not, but
it certainly filled my brain. To say the least, Mr Briggs no
longer had my attention. At the time, I was just a very
embarrassed boy. Later in life, the term "arousal" explained a
lot!
It was about then that I hazarded a look in Sharon's direction.
She erupted in laughter, and "what the heck," so did I. What
else could I do? Mr Briggs was caught totally off guard by this
dual outburst, right in front of him. He exploded in anger, and
threw both of us out of the class.
Sharon happily put her shoes on, grabbed up her stuff, and
headed out of the door, with me gushing with delight, on her
heels. I was thinking, "Wow, she likes me!" But, once in the
hallway, she turned to me and said, "That was fun ... see you
later." "Bummer!" it was back to life for me, as just one more
bashful boy who admired her from afar. So thus ended my
"approximately two minute," one-sided romance with Sharon Tate.
"Stuff" really does happen! Again, true story!

a cool breeze blowing through my gray hair,
and thinking on 69 years of memories.

My little blurb yesterday was full of holes and one of the
wonderful Bomb-babes I got to visit with over the weekend is
having a birthday today on July 2, 2010 tho I didn't mention her
yesterday,.. what a blast it all was,.. Couldn't believe it when
Beth ('63) and Laura ('65) PARKER brought Judy ('60) along with
them to the gathering... Haven't seen Judy in 50 years...
Honest... I think I made Ann ENGEL Schafer ('63) almost spit out
her drink when I yelled (I musta still thought the B-ball game
was going on) at almost the top of my lungs that I hadn't seen
Judy since 1960!!!!!! It was sure great to see the big fat liar
(HEIDLEBAUGH ('65) after his being away from Vegas for so long...
It was great to see the Sorry 7's good pals from grade school and
Jr Hi, Dennis and Sandy NALDER ('65 for both)... That is loyalty
to come to a reunion for a school you never got to attend! And as
we have all commented at one time or another... non-Richlanders
just wouldn't understand... But right now let's all give a huge
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Jamie WORLEY ('64)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pappy,
First of all, a belated happy birthday. You certainly did
entertain with your tome about you and Sharon Tate ('61wb-RIP).
It was a great story and one that most guys either experienced
(more like hoped for) in one form or another during our formative
years. I certainly did not have an adventure as exciting as yours
but I sure as heck wish I could report something along those
lines. I do remember living vicariously through Lonny LANE
('71wb) at 9th grade sock hops -- slow dancing with girls and
trying to inch the backs of their mini-skirts up to give the guys
sitting in the bleachers (I was one of them) a glimpse of the
foreign territory we could never hope to visit in person.
I digress. The purpose of this is not only to thank you for
bringing back some good (albeit angst ridden) memories; but, also
to invite Mike FRANCO ('70) to finally tell the true story of him
and Melanie Rush ... after all these years, I'm sure it will be a
good one.

Happy Fourth of July, Bombers.
To: Larry MATTINGLY ('60)
If you haven't talked to the city of West Richland about the
fireworks there are some great areas where it could be done. One
possibility is the Ball Park at Bombing Range Road. Donna, the
new mayor, is the greatest and I am sure she would work with
you. It is a minute from my house and I would love to see the
Sky in Bloom there. I do miss the fireworks and all the fun at
Browns Point where I lived for nine years. Do not miss the
weather.

-Patti JONES Ahrens ('60) ~ West Richland, WA. Where the weather
has been off and on but heating up for the 4th of
July. THe dogs and kitties are pacing and the birds
are beginning to hide as the noise in the neighborhood
is getting louder. This area where I live has been loud
with fireworks since about 9:00 p.m. Will be even
louder tomorrow night for hours. My doggie isn't
afraid which helps. She just paces and then goes out
under my truck in the garage if it gets too much for
him. My last doggie Windy would run away and then I
would have to find her and corral her.

Happy July 4th to all Bombers everywhere. We were blessed to
grow up in such a safe and encouraging place as Richland was
back when I was a child and you could safely ride your bike
everywhere ... there were no missing persons I remember and few
murders ... and lots to do such as our wonderful library and
swimming pool. I always planned to be a lifeguard there, but
part-time work interfered with getting the training and then
school and then life ... maybe I should take the training to
become a 66 year old lifeguard ... it would be good exercise
which I do need .... hope to be back in Washington State for a
short visit in early August, as part of a trip for a family
reunion, and a swing down to Nevada to see my grandson, and my
son and his wife. Happy 4th to all in our great nation, let's
work to keep it the land of the free and the home of the brave;
and special thanks to our military who have worked hard to keep
this slogan true and relevant.

You have always been very close but slightly off target. Some
might attribute this simply to following in the awesome shadow
of the Class of '71. Me, I am pretty your issues came from
inhaling all those gas fumes all those years pumping at
Wascher's Mobil at the center of Richland's fabulous North End,
GWWay & McMurray.
At any rate, it was NOT "Melanie Rush", it was *Merrilee*
Rush!!! I do not profess to be a home run hitter but I guarantee
strike outs if you don't even get the first name right.
As for the "real story" .... come crash the upcoming Class of
'70 40th, my children, and you will hear tales that will make
your hair curl and your teeth chatter .... and some may even be
true.
And Vic, are you sure you can HANDLE THE TRUTH?!?!?!?

Picture # 100704-06 is Doug Cameron. Doug and his wife Marge
were some of my parents' best friends; children are Dorothy ('55),
Judy ('60), and Doug Jr. (Jock ('588)). Some of the nicest
people in Richland. I still see Jock and his lovely wife Connie
periodically around Seattle/Bellevue/Mercer Island -- turns out
their daughter married into the family of my son's best friend.
Once again, what a small world! And,

As usual, you are correct and I have to concede to my older
friend. How the heck Merilee morphed to Melanie is beyond me
(but maybe she has a brand new key?? :)). The other mistake I
think I may have made was confusing you with Rich CRIGLER ('70)
as the lothario in question. Now I understand that it should be
pretty difficult to confuse a world class tennis player with a
guy who runs around with a stick he uses to propel himself with
but I seem to recall that you were more the Harvard/JFK type of
guy and Crigler was at home in Moses Lake with the Turnabouts.
At any rate, I wish I could crash your reunion. Class of '70 had
all those awesome Honky Tonk Women. Please make sure to collect
any debts I owe from Lance "watch this" WILLIS ('70) or the
infamous "stockboy" -- Little Billy WEDBERG ('70). I understand
that Les Schwab's most famous retiree is now keeping the aisles
of Fred Meyer safe for all. I also understand that "Little" is
an appropriate description of Bill these days. I think he has
dropped close to 70 pounds this year. Good job, Bill!!
By the way, Mike, we went to see Eric Clapton last night and he
did the acoustic version of "Layla" -- told the story of how he
wrote it for Patty Boyd when she was still with George Harrison
but then some guy from Eastern Washington State College named
Franco stole her from him and he got all messed up with drugs
and ended up writing one of his biggest hits, "Cocaine". You may
want to work on the details of that one before the reunion. I
now ALSO understand that J-Lo has been spotted in the Seattle
area on numerous occasions -- in disguise but always wearing a
Boeing baseball cap .... The legend grows.
And finally, my calendar shows that today, July 5th is Danny
WALKER's ('71) birthday. I launched more than one successful
duck hunt up river from the Walker dock with Danny, Dave
McCOLLUGH ('71), and Steve DAUENHAUER ('??) -- now THERE are
some stories!!! Anyway, hope you have a great birthday, Danny!!!

The teacher in the picture is Mrs. Donna Foust Burroughs; the
student she is handing a comic book to is Katy RIGGINS ('60). I
do not know who the other girl behind Katy is. Other '60's
graduates and I are in the room.
About four years ago I found my fourth grade teacher Mrs. Foust
still living right across the street from Spalding in the same
house. Still as pretty as she was and a very skilled dresser.
Always a smile. When she answered the door she knew who I was
quickly and flew into my arms for a hug. I think we were her
first class when she taught at Spalding. When she had to move to
another school she said that she cried to her brother because she
had to drive a mile to teach at another school. Maren SMYTH
('63 & '64), Jan BOLLINGER ('60), and I paid for and got her to
Club-40.

She loved every moment of it. She saw numerous students she
hadn't seen for years. I think she turns 84 this year (going on
20 years young). She keeps busy helping the elderly and visiting
her daughters.
I am still in contact with her. She was my greatest teacher
through the years. I think she has a key to the fountain of
youth.

loud with all the fireworks that families were setting
off Sunday night. From ground fireworks to aerial it was
lots of fun sitting on my front porch. The fireworks were
all around me. Everyone was making it safe except the
cars going down the street speeding. They got yelled at
to slow down. The wee ones were very loud with their
excitement as each firework went off. Adults also. My dog
Gunny lay on the grass on his leash and would bark at the
excitement every once in a while. He lay very still and
when it was time to go in did not want to. He has been
sleeping all day. Jesse the cat did very well by hiding
in the bedroom. Still not the same fireworks as yours,
Larry MATTINGLY ('60).

Larry,
I was surprised to see you lived on Judson St. in Richland. I am
Jim SMITH's ('58) sister, and lived on the other side of the
Barrs. I suppose you knew that. My brother was here in
Missouri, where I live, for a graduation party for two of my
grandkids. I asked him if he knew who lived on the corner and he
said, "I think it was the Mattinglys." I can remember riding my
red tricycle down to your house a couple of times. It seemed to
me there were a couple of other kids riding theirs as well. We
all had a great time together. It seemed not long after that I
rode down there and you had moved. I have always wondered who
you were, and I believe those kids were you and your siblings. I
can remember losing my new friends, and all these years wondered
who they were. I don't know how long you lived there, or who all
the other neighbors were at that time, but I will say Bill
COMPTON ('64) lived across the street from the Barrs. Then
there were Richard ('60) and Susy ('64) SUTCH, and the Heilings
next to them.

Re: Meeting A Bomber
I have just arrived back in Anchorage from doing the 4th of July
display at Dutch Harbor. Internet at the hotel was spotty at best
to receive mail but transmission was next to impossible. I had
designed the large display and it went very well with 100% fired.
My crew there are city officials and they are as good as I have
ever had.
Residents and fishery folks that saw the display at 11:59 PM on
the 4th said it was great and they would see me back for the New
Years Eve display. Seems weird to shoot in the daylight. But the
folks watching from across the bay have a dark green mountain
behind the fireworks, and it was cloudy and so they showed up
OK.
"Bombers are everywhere" .... On the plane from Seattle to
Anchorage the young man setting next to me was Joe Carnevali RHS
Class of '08. He is attending Seattle Pacific University and
during summer break was on the way up to spend some time with
his girl friend who is from Alaska. Nice young man.
I will spend a few days up here meeting with clients and some
prospects.
Back to the normal grind on the 12th.

Next time in the Tri Cities I will drop a literature package by
the West Richland City Hall. Thanks for the tip.

Over the years I have met your brother Jim ('58) on 3-4
occasions. We played together off and on as I remember. But I had
completely forgotten he had a sister. But I do now remember you
and your tricycle on the brand new concrete walks we had. I
remember the Barrs and several other kids whose names I have long
forgotten. I can't remember exactly how long we lived there at
1613 Judson but I think it was a bit less then 2 years. I loved
the house and the neighborhood, but my mother hated it. (I never
knew why.) So we moved back to a "B" at 310 Benham. They bought
that house in 1957 for $5600-5700. We sold it years later for
$120K as I remember. Mom's friends and family (my brothers and
her sister and a cousin) had all moved to Seattle area so she did
too. I noticed a couple months ago when I drove by it, that the
owners have installed stucco siding and changed the front
porches. Seems like as I drive through town many owners have
fixed up the old alphabet houses at least somewhat, but some
sadly have let them go downhill.
Any alums see the Pasco 5th of July fireworks? This was our first
year doing them and the notice was a bit short in advance, so
Rich, our Spokane area manager, had to put it together a bit on
short notice. I am interested in any opinions.

I also was fortunate enough to have Mrs. Foust as my 4th grade
teacher. I remember her poise and seemingly effortless charm
still. I'd love to see her again. Did she show your class the
photos from her marriage to her first husband? They were riding
in a little cart, drawn by a horse I think and I think it was in
Wisconsin or Minnesota.

have finally seen two of my dad -- the first two pictures in

picture, and the man on the right in the second picture. John M.
Fox: father to Gregor FOX ('58) and Betsy FOX Vance ('63).
I also recognize Clyde Bergdahl and Fred Mollerus in the first
picture and, possibly, Larry German. I see 'Director' signs on
the table in front of each person. Does anyone know what they
were Directors of? My dad was working for General Electric as a
metallurgical engineer in Schenectady, NY, where he knew W.E.
Johnson who was his connection to coming out to Richland in
1949. We always watched GE Theatre, I think, on Sunday nights
with Ronald Reagan; a family event.
Thanks, Don, for these pictures; it was really fun to see
pictures of my dad that I've never seen. Also saw WE Johnson in
one of these pictures; and Mr. Travis (can't remember his first
name) who, I think, was the head of AEC.

Tri-Cities. I have been here about a year. I moved back to help
take care of my parents. I graduated from Columbia High (I will
never get use to calling it Richland High) in '73. I work for

I made every excuse not to go to school. Now I am back in
school, on purpose, sharing with students why they need to stay
in school. I just wanted to know how many of you are still

Howdy Folks. John W. Randall again. I'm fixin' to head on up the
road around the bend in the river, but I just wanted to drop you
a final note about my visit. I'm not exactly sure how the
Centennial folks got me here, but it was shore 'nuff a fun
filled few weeks. We wrapped things up Sunday afternoon at the
annual 4th of July picnic. Not exactly the way I remember it
(they even added a Band Concert) but still a fun time. I eased
on out 'bout the time some 100 people or so were gathering to do
something over at the Amon Park Arch, apparently they fixed it
up or somethin'. You know, that's something that really galls
me. We all know Howard and his Daddy bought up all the land
around here and built an Irrigation system. Howard platted and
filed a Township Plat and then had his cute little contest to
name the place. Later, his Daddy donated the land for a City
Park (in Howard's name - heck Howard had moved to Seattle by
that time). Everybody thinks that the Arch was put up for Howard
but notice that his name wasn't on it, just the Amon Family.
Anyhow, I'm driftin' here, Howard gets all the credit for
forming the town, but if you think 'bout it, there was only one
person who drove the Incorporation that made us a REAL town, all
legal like, and that was ME! Howard got all the congrats and
what did I get? One stinkin' sentence in the History books
mentioning my election as the first Mayor. Well, I don't want to
leave on a sour note. I really did have a terrific time.
I understand that Burt still has some of the Souvenir Programs
left if you would like them for reference (send $2 & your snail

It was wonderful seeing flags in many yards during the 4th. After
serving in the Army I have a different view of patriotism. Our
country gives you the freedoms that other countries do not have,
but we, as Americans need to keep that freedom sacred and value
its true meaning. I see people burning the flag and not standing
when the National Anthem is heard. While these are things that
our freedom allows Americans to do and not do, we need to rethink
our actions and remember that it is our flag that allows us to
do these things in the first place. Americans, please rethink
what should be correct actions when we see the flag or hear the
National Anthem. Our country is not perfect but it is a lot
better than what happens in other countries. And while, maybe, we
aren't happy about what is happening in the government, we should
not blame that on the flag. Our flag has been there, flying,
during times of horror, disappointment, as well as triumph. It it
there to remind us that it will be there to back us up during the
bad times and fly gallantly during times that are just short of
miracles. The flag gives us hope, determination, peace and
comfort, and reminds us of those that have gone before us and
gave their lives for this flag. So please stand during the
National Anthem and stand when the flag parades in front of you.
And those of you that choose to burn the flag, please go away.

Camry with a Bomber alumni license plate frame parked next to my

Re: "Northwest Passage: The Great Columbia River".
Thanks for the info on Wm. Dietrich's "Northwest Passage: The
Great Columbia River". I arrived in Richland in Aug. '44 (a wee
little one) from Lowell, MA. This book was a wonderful memory
of my geographic history growing up. My family traveled all over
the Northwest expecting to only stay a few years. Obviously, we
stayed. I was aware of changes as they occurred but didn't have
the political and historical background to be aware of the
impacts these changes made on so many people's lives. We traveled
to all the dam ground-breaking and dedication ceremonies but I
was pretty young. I remember that the only day my parents ever
took us out of school was for the McNary Dam dedication where
Dwight Eisenhower appeared in his 'bubble car'. The next day
the Marcus Whitman music teacher made each of us who were absent
write a song about the dam. I think his name was Mr. Dunn (?). He
was also my piano teacher and Sunday School teacher.
Then later, I was living in Seattle when the Belloni (1969) and
Boldt (1974) decisions acknowledged the Native Americans' fishing
rights. At this time I was having babies, working and raising a
family and not paying much attention to changes brought about by
the courts.
I moved back to the Tri-Cities in 1992. I felt immediately
welcomed by the geographical surrounding here. A few years ago
my husband and I attended a week-end down in Pendleton when the
Tamastslikt Museum held a film week-end of historical movies and
I particularly remember the one that covered the years of David
Sohappy's activities in support of Indian fishing rights, his
arrest and imprisonment for illegal fishing.
I have, over the years, been a reader of all things 'Lewis &
Clark'. In 2005, my sister, Miriam ('60), and I drove the route
of the Expedition from St. Louis to Astoria making the historical
exploration of the headwaters and the mouth of the Columbia River
as fascinating as the other parts of the book.
The book also filled in some of the details from the 'secret'
years at Hanford.
Sorry to be so long-winded. It was exciting to read the details
of the changes that took place during my years of living in
Washington. Every chapter had details that filled in information
that had effected my life. The Columbia River is such a rich and
meaningful presence in my life. I recommend this book to past and
present Richland folks.
Next, I think I'll try a couple of his fiction books that you
mentioned.

Met with the radiologist... got a clear report from him...
won't see him, anymore, unless cancer returns. Met with cancer
doctor... CAT scan was clear... lymph nodes clear, lungs and
chest clear... no signs of cancer. Will meet with the "ENT" for
a scope... will have scopes and/or scans every 3-4 months for the
next two years (can hardly wait for those... NOT). If nothing
shows, then they will consider me cancer-free! WOOHOO!!!!!! Still
have the mouth sores... radiation burns on my tongue... claim
they should be all gone by Christmas... am keeping fingers
crossed cause I want to be able to eat all the goodies this
Christmas! *grin* Hair has started to grow... little by little...
still have more on the top of my head and the sides than in
the back, but it is "getting there". I'm still only able to eat
"soft" foods, which is getting so blasted boring, but on the
plus side, I have managed to lose AND keep off over 60# so
some "good" did come out of this horrible experience! Now, the
"trick" is NOT to gain it back, once I can eat, again. *grin*
I am almost where I was when I graduated high school... haven't
been "that little" in years and years, so feels pretty darn good.

Re: parade grand marshall
Seeing the post about Giggles got me thinking about last week.
Tumwater has a big to-do every 4th of July including a parade
and capped off by a fireworks show. The grand marshall for this
year's parade was none other than J.P. Patches the clown from our
days growing up, from the Seattle area. We'd visit some friends
of my parents or go to the zoo in Seattle quite often and always
watched his show on TV while there or in the western half of the
state. I guess he's in his 80s and still full of life.

Has any amongst you had any experience with those services which
given a SSAN will in turn give you the most recent address of the
individual? I'm trying to locate some old Army friends, who were
once young Army friends. No so old that one's service number
wasn't their SSAN. Me I had five different numbers. This had
nothing to do with multiple personalities, just rule changes,
kinda like NASCAR if you receive my drift. But I digress, of
course I usually do.

It's also time for Brother Leo, Ellen and Mary Margaret to rent
us a hall for the GMC63MCCS Christmas gala to be held again in
Olympia for the twenty somethingth time. This year we'll all
muster on Saturday, December 11th. In keeping with tradition
the males in attendance are encouraged to again bring lots and
lots of beads for the "you know what thing". As per the by-laws,
an amnesty has been declared so that no Pep Club demerits will
be assigned to participants. Now that Rob WILSON ('63) has re-
entered the fold, we've got some muscle should the long arms of
Lyda and Mrs. Burns come our way. Not too sure if there is a
Statute of Limitations for besmirching the character of those
ingénue who laced up their blindingly white sneakers every

I echo your birthday greetings to The Big Swede, Glenn EKLUND
('71), and hope retirement is treating him well. Glenn has been
one of my best friends since our Marcus Whitman days and has
always been one of the good guys. What he was not, however, was
that trombonist sitting between Brad SIMONIS ('71) and Randy
DREHER ('71) in the Carmichael band. That, my memory-impaired
friend, was none other than Dennis STREGE ('71), a fine trombone
player whose career was tragically cut short when his arm could
no longer reach the end of the slide... clearly lacking the good
judgment of us short, stubby guys who chose to use our short
stubby fingers on trumpet valves! Glenn, by the way, was in the
band as a tower of strength on the licorice stick but, until now,
has probably never been mistaken for Dennis STREGE!

Re: Doobies Update
A follow-up to my close yesterday.
We went out to see Chicago in concert last night. The Doobie
Brothers opened for them. Much to my surprise - most of the
original Doobies were present. Remember, Michael McDonald was
not an original Doobie. They were FANTASTIC!!! I would highly
recommend them!!!
Chicago was okay but not as good as I thought they would be. We
went based on seeing them on Chris Isaak and the Private Sessions
shows. Good but not great - not as tight as they used to be and a
bit off at times...
BTW - I never did see or smell any real doobies... Even in the
parking lot.

Re: Kevin Costner
I am heavily involved in a new desalination and waste water
purification technology and we are having the manufacturing down
in Louisiana, so when I was down there last I had the opportunity
to meet Kevin Costner. He has developed, for $23 million and 15
years, a centrifuge system for separating oil from water in
fairly large quantities, about 200 gallons of oil over day per
machine. He is a pleasant guy to talk to but in his presentation
you would think that he invented the centrifuge... not. His
centrifuge is a bit different in its design for oily water
separation but I can't see $23 million in developmental costs
going into it, nor 15 years in development. It is a lot like what
has happened to our equipment, but not the same technology, in
that designs or equipment that has been developed in the past but
were not very useful at the time have now come of age with the
advent of newer materials and demand. That is certainly true with
our technology that was developed in Alaska in the late 1970s and
early 1980s as a gold dredge but has evolved over the years into
something that can desalinate a lot of seawater or clean up
millions of gallons of waste water. Kevin does not buy that and
believes that his machine was developed for this purpose only,
though he has a hard time explaining why it took 15 years to do
it. Ah well, life is too short for these kinds of semantics.
Re: Harrison Ford
It must be movie star week for Bomber Bill as I was down at
Boeing Field last week for a private jet show and who should be
in the pilot's Ready Room but Mr. Harrison Ford. He had just
flown in from Southern California and was changing from his jet
to his Twin Otter to fly up to British Columbia and go fishing.
He does this every year and this is the second year that he has
come in for the show. Nice guy and has lots of hours of flying
time. The conversation was not Hollywood but more of the usual
pilot chatter (pilot (pile it) here and pilot (pile it) there)
kind of thing, if you get my drift. Who just bought a new
aircraft and who just lost theirs to the economy... that kind of
stuff. By the way, the private jet business is picking up again
with sales much better than last year but there are still a lot
of foreclosed aircraft on the market and some super deals.

The temps down there have been 114-117F for some time running.
We just bought a three-bedroom condo in Rancho Mirage but with
the natural A/C of the Pacific Northwest, this little abode is
going to be a "Snow Bird" destination. A short sale deal we just
could not pass up and just a little inflation hedge too.

Obituary from the Pasco Herald, July 8, 1943
Word has been received of the death of Major Norbett W.
Timmerman at a prisoner of war camp at Osaka, Japan.
His death occurred on June 11 as a result of pneumonia,
according to information received from the War
Department. He entered service in the Infantry in
November, 1940 and was on duty in the Philippine Islands
when they fell to the Japanese, and last December was
reported a prisoner of war.
Major Timmerman was educated at the Richland schools
and his parents were early pioneer residents of that
district. He is survived by his wife and son Alan, of
Portland, Oregon, and by his sisters Edna Robertson ('15),
Christal Timmerman and Blanche Timmerman, and his
brothers Walter Timmerman ('14) and Emil Timmerman.
Norbett Timmerman was a 1923 graduate of Richland High
School.

Re: Central California Luncheon
Our sincere thanks to Richard "Dick" ROBERTS ('49) and Carol
TYNER Roberts ('52) for organizing and hosting the Central
Califoirnia Lunceon. We had a fun time visiting in the Roberts'
home and then off to lunch at Cafe Vostro here in Grover Beach,
CA. Although Donna and I had never met the Roberts and the other
attendees, none seemed like strangers. Our connection with
Richland made it as though old friends were gathering for a short
visit. It was a great time to share our Bomber stories and
growing up a Bomber. Now we have more new friends!

Re: My GENELEX story
I want to share my story with everyone. My prayer is that this
helps others. I tell everyone about Genelex. Maybe Genelex will
help pharmacies & drug companies better understand what is
happening with medications and food interaction. DNA testing has
come so far that in the future it may tell us everything we need
to know about ourselves and health (medications, food, vitamins,
etc.)

Thanks to Mary JUDD Hinz ('60) who put an entry in the Sandstorm
to let everyone know I was in the hospital. Thanks for the many
prayers and well wishes. I tried to answer them all but couldn't
sit at the computer for long at that time. Right out of the
hospital. All so fun and loving, and caring.
Thanks to Lorin St. JOHN ('55) and his wife Phyllis. I had been
in the hospital for 8 days and my oxygen level wouldn't come up.
They did a prayer circle, my oxygen level came up, I stabilized,
and went home the next day.
Thanks to Glen ROSE ('58) and his wife Carol who have been the
greatest help... Carol has followed along every step... She
drives me for doctor appointments and talks with me about what
has happened at the doctors.
Also a great thank you to my friend Janet FORBY Padgett ('60) who
has been the greatest support and helped me get to the hospital
(my 2nd time) in May.
Re: First trip to Kadlec
Saturday, April 24th: My western Washington daughter, Katrina had
been here for a couple of days, but had gone home because we
thought I was better.
Monday, April 26th: My other western Washington daughter, Kim,
called and discovered I had an appointment with the doctor. She
drove here so she could take me. The doctor sent me by ambulance
to Kadlec because my oxygen level was 50%.
Diagnosis: viral pneumonia due to medication (methotrexate) for
my rheumatoid arthritis.
I am usually fairly quiet about my health. but I want to say here
that I have been a lot of pain with my back for many years caused
by about four rear end accidents. Aleve and Tylenol were the only
medications and I did lots of walking when I could.
I was in the hospital for nine days... doctors decided my problem
was the methotrexate I was taking for the Rheumatoid Arthritis,
but pneumonia needed to be cleared before anything else could
happen.

A few years back I had a blood sample sent to Genelex, They set
up a family DNA data base. Genelex does individual DNAs and
checks for comparability with all prescriptions and foods as
well... all compatible with your own body/DNA.
Kim talks with Genelex and does the computer part and I tell
Kim the medication and the foods I eat and vitamins & minerals I
take. I talked to Janine at Genelex. Genelex is a great help to
explain everything so forth. It took about two weeks to get the
swab test for new medications, etc. to them and the DNA to be
done.
Genelex is Medicare approved... It is $690 an individual...
depends on what insurance pays if that price is the same or not.
Re: Turmeric Problem for me
Turmeric is an Indian spice for pain. Turmeric came highly
recommended but Genelex determined that it was not right with my
medications. India is known to have the least Alzheimer's Disease
in the world.., it is thought to be due to turmeric. NOTE: Yellow
mustard has turmeric in it. (I checked mine.. it's there. -Maren]
My experience at Kadlec was very positive..
My daughter, Katrina and I were talking about my will, etc.
One of the first things Katrina said was "I know. Email the
Sandstorm". My children all know how much I love Richland
Bombers. It took me 43 years to get back to Richland and I have a
lot of living to do. All of this has made me stop and think about
aging and what I want taken care of.
I have read from others such as George SWAN ('59) their thoughts
about aging and felt I was not aging and wouldn't. The Rheumatoid
Arthritis has made me stop and think. This disease usually comes
on earlier in life and is in the DNA. I have spoken to family and
cannot find any history so far. The Mayo clinic website is a
great help to study diseases of any kind.
Re: 2nd Hospital visit
Thursday May 20th: I awoke in excruciating pain in my knees...
Janet FORBY Padgett ('60) happened to call and discovered that
I was in immediate need... she came over, called my daughters,
and the ambulance for me...
Disappointingly, I missed R2K+10... enjoyed reading and seeing
the pictures about it. Thanks to any Bomber who works on
gatherings that bring us altogether.

High School Coaches Hall of Fame
Toivo Piippo (RIP), former Chief Jo Warriors basketball coach,
will be inducted into the HS Coaches Hall of Fame this Thursday,
July 22nd at the Hixson Student Union Bldg on the campus of
Whitworth University in Spokane. Social hour is from 5PM to 6PM
with dinner and speeches to follow. Like most of these events the
cost is rather pricey ($30 at the door).
You might wonder why the High School Coaches HOF when Coach
Piippo was a Jr. High coach. He is being inducted under a new
category this year called "Assistant Coaches". Piippo is one of
two in the first class of inductees for this category.

A small but enthusiastic group gathered on Sunday for lunch.
Temperatures in the mid 80s and summertime adventures seem to

Greetings to all.
After about 3 months of feeling absolute euphoric joy with
daughter Sandra's progress against the metastasized colon
cancer... reports were that she had just 1 growing tumor (down
from 4) and she was able to teach the last 6 weeks of school (!)
which was a wonderful "gift" for her... 3 weeks ago she was
started on a 5FU chemical regimen via pump, then doctors were
planning surgery for the one... a new report, which she got from
the surgeon just Friday, revealed 4 "live" tumors. The one in her
liver, which had not changed in months and which they believed
was "dead", ate up the radio-active injection so fast, they
couldn't believe it. Thankfully, other vital organs seem to be
clear.
Long story short, she has been accepted into a trial treatment in
Spokane. For now the plan is, they will see how that goes, then
do surgery and take out everything they can find. This plan may
buy her a few more years. This is a devastating blow after we
believed she was doing so well.
I fly to Alaska this afternoon (yesterday by the time you read
this) and thought I'd be there 6 or 7 weeks and caravan out with
friends. With this new terrible situation, I will likely not stay
that long. Sandra has every intention of going up to see family
and friends when she can work it in with her treatment schedule.
She wants SO MUCH to live long enough for her granddaughter to
remember her!!!!! My mother died when Sandra was 3-1/2 and she
isn't sure if she actually remembers her or if the "memories" are
fragments from stories and photos. She also wants very much to
teach this fall.
Prayers and positive thoughts are always welcomed.

Indian cuisine. It seems like everything has it's yin and yang.

Memory to our 9th Grade Coach, teacher and friend ...1951 Chief
Joseph Jr. High
The attached U of Oregon Archives in 1938-39 NCAA Championship
Team Picture had one "unidentified" player and it appears one
"misidentified" player. I believe the 4th player from the left in
the top row is Toivo Piippo.

He has the classic Piippo features and unforgettable, "knowing
smile". I remember the 1951 opening of Chief Joseph Jr. High
School in Richland when coach joined the new faculty. That same
expression and slight grin came when he would tape our ankles
after a sprain… remarking, "You know how to stop this from
happening to your -ankles?... You gotta keep these ankles outta
the joints!" Coach had nearly every 9th grade boy try out for
the team in that first season at Chief Jo. He gave us all a fair
chance to play.
In 1951, Coach Piippo never talked about his U of O "Tall Firs"
team or his B-25 missions in WWII. He was modest, with a great
sense of humor, the patience of the biblical "Jobe", and a master
of individual basketball techniques, not usually acquired by
coaches at Jr. High School, high school or college level. One
valuable technique he taught us was to be unafraid to push,
shove, or throw our own teammate out of the way when a tight
screen was set on us (sometimes our teammate would be pressing
the screener and blocked us fighting our way around the screen).
"They'll never call a foul on you for shoving your own team mate
out of the way." It was a most valuable technique for players
with coaches who didn't want players "switching" during a screen.
Coach Piippo was way ahead of his time.
He, like our 1955 high school coach, Art Dawald, taught and
choreographed individual techniques in slow motion so that
everyone had a chance to learn them well and make them automatic
responses.
I'll never forget his patience with 9th grade boys trying to
survive at a time when hormones clashed with adolescent acne as
frantic "transferred" students readjusted to one more school
move. We adapted once again to being separated from half their
classmates at the opening of a new school; and settled in,
amidst the dust of newly plowed and planted lawn, faculty and
curriculum.
Lots of quick decisions and choices for the student body
members... "The student body chose Chief Joseph Warriors"
(mascot later "sanitized" into a falcon or other raptor); chose
school colors Blue and Gold. Establishing a band, orchestra,
cheerleaders, and class officers. It was good to attend and
study in another million dollar plus facility (criticized by some
congressional delegations as extravagant) although being away
from half of our 8th grade pals at Carmichael Jr. High was the
only negative... but we rejoined them in 1952 at RHS for three
of the best years of our lives in one of America's best towns to
"grow up in".
Coach Piippo accompanied a cadre of outstanding faculty and
principal, Robert Chisholm (later Supt. of Schools). Our year was
packed with adjustments, homework and the new "National School
Assembly" Programs. No better time for a great man to enter his
championship career as one of our greatest coaches, friends and
educators.
Recalling Toivo Piippo as a teacher and coach puts a smile on
my face and creates a good feeling as I remember being in his
classes and on his basketball court. His family, former students
and basketball players will get the same satisfaction and
pleasure in remembering Coach Piippo when they think about the
years, friends, faculty and events at Chief Joseph Jr. High. He
was a real-life Richland legend. I'm proud to have known him and
called him "Coach".

Re: Celebrate Jim Fleming's Life!
I know that you will all agree with me that Jimmy (Jim, his big
boy name) FLEMING ('65-RIP) was a huge part of the '65ers' and
'66ers' lives... he was, of course, far more than that. He was a
shining star in this world of ours and tho I wasn't privileged to
see him often when I did see him I was filled with the friendship
of years. As we all did with Pook ('63-RIP) & Shelley ('63-RIP),
we all had Fleming stories... maybe not quite in the same
category, but great stories all the same. Though I'll be heading
out for a few weeks in some of the hinterlands of Canada, a
memorial will be held for Jim On Sunday, August 8, 2010 at the
Sons of Norway Hall, 6710 N Country Homes Blvd., Spokane from
2pm to 4pm. I am sending an announcement with pix to the
Sandstorm as well to make sure you all get it.

The one thing I remember from Mr. Piippo's class was that he
mentioned that Finland, his home country, was the only nation to
have fully repaid it's World War II debt in total. I thought that
was pretty significant and it must have impressed me as I still

Jim FLEMING was one of my favorite people in the world.
Jim, Wayne LUKENS ('65-RIP) and I were in on the infamous BREW
MASTER saga.

his own beer rather than hang out and have Dumes GAINES ('61-RIP)
buy it for us! Of course the rest is history with the semi

Best wishes go out today to one of my best friends growing up.
Today, Saturday July 24th is on my calendar as Bill AYOTTE's (71)
birthday. Bill and I went through Christ the King together and
became best of friends in high school. Bill spent some time
working with Val down at the Spudnut shop before moving over to
help put at the Pancake House and beginning his career in the
hospitality industry. There are many "adventures" I could share
but I mainly remember Billy stepping up as the "man of the house"
after losing his Dad in 1970. Bill did a pretty good job of
looking after his Mom and siblings.
He now owns the Creekside Restaurant on the north side of
Seaside, OR on the west side of 101. Can't miss it and he makes
Broasted Chicken that is out of this world. If you are in the
area, drop in and see him. Also, remind him that his 40th class
reunion is next year and that he really ought to try and make at
least one of them.

Just looked at the Club 40 web page list of attendees for the
upcoming Club 40 Annual Meeting. No activity since the 12th of
this month. Figured there should be more what with the really big
whoop-de-do's for those classes having major reunions this year.
With the registrations now in hand, the meeting could be held in
the lobby.
Remember, this year the Club is saying no to walk ups. You have
to be registered in order to get (or is it eat?). And there is
a deadline for registrations coming soon (the latter part of

Reason for the delay in entries is partly my fault. Some of the
registrations are going directly to Richland and then have to be
snail mailed over to me in Bothell. Rather than putting into the
computer I have been playing with my grandkids. This was the
week-end of "Grandma's Annual Golf Tournament". Filled up 3 tee-
times. My son came over from Idaho to join us since his sons were
working and couldn't make it. Went to my Grandson's in Duvall for
a BBQ afterwards and the last guest just left a few minutes ago
(Sunday afternoon).
Burt PIERARD '(59) can't update the page until "Grandma" here
gets the info into him. Should be sending a new entry later this
evening after I read my 52 e-mails that came in today. Also have
to pick up yesterday's mail and see if there are any new entries.
Will start the process of name tags sometime this week as I leave
for Nashville the week of the annual meeting in September and
won't get to see any of you lovely people this year. Will be
thinking of you though, I promise.

Hey, Class of 1960,
Let's make sure we ALL are at the 50th Reunion Sept 10-12 at the
Red Lion! It promises to be a great reunion, especially if we are
all there. Registration deadline is August 25th and is coming up
fast. The reunion committee is working hard to put everything in
place for a fabulous weekend. We also have just found out that
our class foreign exchange student, Ayla OZAR Unal, is flying in
from Turkey to be at the reunion. She lived with Linda SEATON our
senior year. Linda is coordinating the trip with Ayla to make
sure all goes well with her getting to Richland. What a treat to
see her again and she is so excited to see all of us again after
50 years!
I have been in contact with many classmates this past month and
am so happy so many of you are going to be there. Please get your
registration forms in soon so others know YOU are coming when
they see the attendee list on the Bomber website. Also everyone
needs to send in the info for the Class Booklet whether you are
coming or not. Many are making huge efforts to come from afar.
Even a classmate from Jefferson School, Lynn Wolte, who moved
away before going to Chief Jo, is coming from Charlotte, NC. She
figures this is the only time she will see all those still very
familiar friends from Jefferson School. She remembers everyone!
Please email or call any classmates you know so that we are all
connecting with each other. We all need some encouragement to get
there, some need more encouragement than others. It is surprising
how one email can help someone decide to make the trip. Those of
you who live in the Tri Cities, no excuse for you guys, be there!
It makes no sense to miss it.... When else will some of us ever
see each other again since we are scattered all over the country?
No sense to wait for the 60th Reunion! This is the perfect time
to show up and be there and see what 50 years has done to our
skinny little bodies of yesterday. Thankfully we are at the stage
of our lives where we can laugh and say, who cares?! Be there!

hour care facility this week. It has been a long and difficult
process, and sadly, legally it is not over yet... but I want to

Nevada to visit more family and friends, including my grandson,

Caitlyn Elizabeth Eroh, 21 inches, 7lbs 6 oz.
Mother Jessie and daughter doing just fine. Jessie's sister
Adina is there to help for a few days. Adina and husband Brian
and 3 children live in Buffalo. Jessie is the youngest daughter
of my oldest daughter Debbie (RIP).
When Jessie graduated from the Culinary Academy she married
Aaron Eroh. They had been best friends since the second grade.
Both attended the same private christian schools all the way
through high school. They live in the Phoenix area.
This makes 6 great-grand-children for me. Can't wait to get down
there and hold her.

Senate Confirmation Hearings today. American troops are in good
hands with Jim at the helm in Iraq and Afghanistan. Let's hope
that there is a speedy end to the conflict, under the close and

Brad, thanks for the phone call, to let me know that the hearing
was finally being televised on C-SPN-1. I had checked for it all
day, but figured that I missed it, or it might have been on C-
SPN-3, which I do not get. As I watched, I was in awe of Jim's
knowledge, conduct, and command presence, demonstrated in front
of the Senate Committee. And, I am most confident that he will be
confirmed soon!
It is still somewhat difficult, despite the fact that I am about
nine years older than Jim, for me to accept the reality that I, a
mere Sergeant of Marines many years ago (make that last century),
nowadays, on special occasions, have a beer and conversation with
this USMC Four Star General, who always insists that I call him,
"Jim!," rather than, "Sir!"
All who are Marines, will recognize how contrary to Marine Corps
History and Tradition, such an act is for even a former enlisted
Marine (who always appropriately ... addressed any officer as
"Sir!" or Ma'am!"). As a Marine, and a Richland Bomber, I
consider myself most fortunate to be a friend and associate of
this Marine, who was already, but is now more than ever, destined
to be a genuine historical figure among Bombers, Marines, and all
Americans.
We local Marines had "somewhat selfishly" hoped to see Jim,
"our friend," become the Commandant of Marines. But, he always
maintained that he preferred to remain in the "combat arena"
where he could be a part of "fighting the good and worthwhile
fight." He had actually talked of finally retiring from our
beloved Marine Corps (after, I believe about 36 years of
service), coming home to live in this area, and joining some of
we "local Marines" in our cherished annual hunting exploits. But,
apparently bigger responsibilities and tasks awaited him. When
confirmed as CENTCOM, he is on his way to accomplishing even
bigger things for our nation and the international community.
SEMPER FI, GENERAL! And, GO BOMBERS!

Ahhh, gee. I'm just glad to have 2 healthy, happy adult sons.
Would be fun to have plain old ordinary grandchildren some day
(not the ones where 'my Chief Jo kid can eat more By's Burgers
French fries than your Carmichael kid')- can't even imagine GREAT
grandchildren! But congratulations to you to be the head of
such a clan. I bet it feels great. Maybe the Scots (my heritage)
were too busy fighting and pillaging to produce many offspring
and I got that gene!
