I will call them if you call from your end too. [I called Friday. Still not "fixed". -Maren] Sounds like it is pretty hot down there in Gretna, LA. Talked to my associates in Lake Charles, LA and he said "...damn, Bill, It's so hot here you could cook boudin on the sidewalk..." Yum. -Bill BERLIN ('56) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Deedee WILLOX Loiseau ('64) Re: Larry MATTINGLY's (60) entry of June 29 My husband and I have both had what we thought was whooping cough. Armand had it over 10 weeks, and I've had it over 6 weeks. We went through 3 series of antibiotics, and I am currently on the 4th (and still coughing!). Interestingly, I have had a cough since I had my heart attack in January, and so had Armand. What Larry MATTINGLY ('60) opened our eyes to is that our 'whooping cough' is probably a reaction to blood pressure medicine. They put me on Lisinopril after my heart attack. Armand is on a different medicine, but he appears to have the same reaction. It seems like the longer you are on it, the more you react. What really irritates me is that I have NEVER had high blood pressure. I was on a low dose of generic Lopressor as a migraine preventative (it really works - no migraines when I am on this medicine), not for high blood pressure. They added Lisinopril and doubled the Lopressor. Is there a doctor in the house? Re: New Great Grandma On a happier note, my granddaughter just had her baby, so I have another great-grandchild. However I have not seen him in person, as we need to get the whooping cough (Pertussis) vaccine. There is an epidemic of it in Washington State. -Deedee WILLOX Loiseau ('64) ~ Burbank, WA where I have coughed so hard, I've pulled muscles I never knew I had. **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: David RIVERS ('65) Re: Dang time goes fast It seems like just yesterday I was watching the rain in Richland and here I am in the heat in Vegas already... I must say, that the weather has been nice... I drove a Roadster today... but I'm already way homesick... From his post and slide show, I gotta say John CAMPBELL ('63) was much more observant than I last weekend... he saw lots of people that I always look for but missed... I must say tho it wasn't all that bad being stuck in the house in the rain with the Divine Ms. HOFF ('64), Linda BELLISTON Boehning ('63), Ellen WEIHERMILLER ('63) and Cecilia BENNETT ('65) (each also divine of course)... I haven't seen Jo (Mills) MILES ('64) pictures yet so I'll hafta see if he can really take pictures of cars... and no sneaking in John's pix... He and Terry WERNER ('65) musta planned for the rain because they showed up in a Jeep... not a hot red one like Cecelia's either... speaking of time flying... I was listening to Norm N. Nite this afternoon and he was playing songs from '61... he always does an hour of "remember when" and plays songs from one year... I was rocking and reliving my yute, when he said "That song was number such and so 51 years ago today." I thought I'd faint... then I realized the class of '61 had their 50th reunion last summer and '62 will be having theirs in August... yipes... I expect good reports from Kippy ('62) and Doug HAWKINS ('62), particularly on how well Ellen ('63) behaves herself and whether she talks them in to getting tattoos at the all night tattoo parlor... wuz kinda hoping Kippy would wear her Song Leader outfit, but as I recall she passed the skirt and sweater down and only kept the goo gaas that went on it... maybe Connie DAME ('65) will model her Majorette uniform... yowsie... it is worth it kids! Well it seems like only yesterday that these three kids were having their special days and here they are again! He would also like someone to take a look at and possibly do some repair to the cinder block foundation. Thanks in advance for any help. -Pattie CRIGLER Cole ('59) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Mary Ann VOSSE Hirst ('63) Re: Lisinopril I have to add my own feelings and experiences with this drug. Aside from my own very personal experience of the side effects of this drug when mixed with other medications, a former neighbor of mine broke out in a head to toe extremely itchy rash - he ended up in emergency, and a dermatologist who happened to be at the hospital took one look at him and said "Lisinopril?" When he said yes, she said that she didn't know why that medication is still on the market. Other side effects experienced by people range from anxiety, agitation and excessive worrying to sore muscles. The cough is just one side effect. -Mary Ann VOSSE Hirst ('63) ~ back from sunny Kauai to cloudy Lacey, WA **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Carol CONVERSE Maurer (Magic Class of '64) Re: Lisinopril The last stints that hubby, Frank had put in they added Lisinopril. Not for high blood pressure per say, but to keep the blood vessels opened up or something like that. He has had this bad cough for ages now. I thought he would have gotten over it when he quit smoking, but not so. NOW I know why. I looked it up and 'tiredness' was another side effect. He seems to be tired a lot and I'm thinking it's from the medicine. I think he should get off of the medication for the time being to see if the cough is due to that. He doesn't have high blood pressure at all. Never has. -Carol CONVERSE Maurer (Magic Class of '64) ~ Eureka, CA We've had a half decent summer so far. **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: David RIVERS ('65) Re: Bomber babes Don'tcha just bet everybody would love to be Bombers... specially those ones that married Bomber-babes and then call us a cult... I'll show you cult buddy boy... Getting to be just a might hot here in Vegas and I'd just love to be back in Richland with my buds... got a message on Facebook from one of our '65er Bomber- babes asking for a phone number of one of the gang for her Brother-in-law... did he ask for my number? Noooooooooooo! But who did they go to for the number? Yup! No matter what Jimbeaux ('63) thinks I don't know "everybody"! That's ok... I hate talking on the phone anyway... I'm always in trouble with the Donut Delinquents because I never turn on my phone... I figger it's to call out... but I guess some people feel otherwise... I know a couple of those guys have told me they NEVER turn theirs off... gads... I'm sorry but it just ain't my style... I don't have a Smart phone and I don't have an iPad... I have a dumb phone that plays "Don't worry Baby" for Richland kids, "God only Knows" for my daughter (we used to sing "God only knows what I'd be without shoes... ") and Charlie Daniel's "In America" for everyone else... that's the extent of my phone's thinking ability... and remember... Machete don't text... but that's not why I'm here today... Boy, it sure did for me. At the beginning of my sophomore year I met Judy BOWEN Pies ('60) in P.E. class and we became fast friends. Judy was the stepdaughter of Wally Bowen (RIP), the manager of the Desert Inn. She and her mom Mary (RIP) and Wally lived in the hotel. The parents had a sort of one-room suite and Judy had a connecting room like a studio apartment. I thought it was so glamorous to live in a hotel. They took all of their meals in the coffee shop and/or dining room, or they ordered room service. We had a lot of sleepovers and it was so strange-- you had to be dressed to go down for any food and drink; no midnight snacks in your jammies. We also swam in the pool a lot. I seem to remember Ralph BENOLIEL ('59) as a lifeguard some of the time. Judy lives in Redmond, OR, near her children. Her husband Bill Pies passed away about five years ago. -Stephanie DAWSON Janicek ('60) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Donni CLARK Dunphy ('63) Re: America Hi Dear Bombers.... When we were in chorus with Mr. Stell we sang a song........ maybe you remember "My Own America"..... It went like this, "My Own America, beloved land of liberty, hear in my heart there'll always be, a song of love for you. From sun kissed mountain tops, I see the fragrant plains below......... I watch your mighty rivers flow........ through my America. Where Freedom is the watchword....... where Justice is for all......... where men would rather........ rather die...... then let old Glory fall"............. and so it went. I am looking at those sun-kissed mountain tops and watching the Columbia River flow outside of my window. My heart is so full and grateful that I was raised in this land. This is not a perfect land and we have our problems...... but I think we have been so privileged and blessed to have all that we have and the ability to be able to reach out to others around the world. I am so thankful that most of us have cherished memories of our childhood and the freedoms we hold dear. God bless you all, Bomber friends, on this our country's Birthday. I was fortunate to have been able to hang with Gary over the years and we got along so well. He was a fun guy and always up for doing something new or interesting or both. He had cool hair too. It did not surprise me that he went into weather forecasting for the military as I think that might have been something that really interested him on a daily basis. For what it is worth, I call Fleet Weather over at CFB (Canadian Forces Base) Esquimalt (Victoria, BC area) and get their forecasts as they have all the "toys" to really get the weather right, and a long way out too. I can see Gary doing that for the Air Force. I wish I had known that he was as close to me in north Seattle because I would have tried to hook up with him. Maybe because I enjoyed the Matrix movies so much and I want this one to be as good but I'm not having much luck... maybe it's too much for my little pea brain... at the same time I'm laying off the coffee (yes cold, ML ('63), Ellen ('63) and Cecilia ('65))... I found it made my stomach ache and made me feel like I was anxious in my chest tho I wasn't actually feeling any anxiety in fact... if that makes any sense... I miss the taste of the coffee but that's about it... I drink it VERY strong and cold all day from morning to night... thought it didn't keep me from sleeping but I think I'm finding I was wrong about that too... doubt if I will try decaffeinated as I'm not sure I could make it strong enough to enjoy the taste... I'm sure this is very instructive and entertaining so I think I'll just get back to that kid I've admired so much over the years and say: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Billy RULON ('64) on your special day, July 10, 2012!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -David RIVERS ('65) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Rick VALENTINE ('68) Re: Spokane Bomber Lunch Hi Spokane Area Bombers... Just a note about the status of Spokane Bomber Lunches. Northern Quest Casino has closed the Woodlands restaurant and expanded it's buffet. Sunday brunch at the buffet is $13.95 and the regulars have suggested finding a new place to hold the lunches. So we need to do 2 things.... 1. Next Sunday July 15th we will meet at Perkins Downtown Spokane, at 12 E. Olive, the corner of Trent and Division. We will meet at 11:30 for coffee and order Lunch around 12:00 noon... We will just have see how this goes... (please RSVP for this lunch only) 2. I have been using the lunch mailing list that came from Jan BOLLINGER Persons ('60-RIP) several years ago. We need to update that list... So If you know a Bomber in Spokane (or the Spokane area) who is not on the list let me know and I will add them. If you are on the mailing list and would like to be removed let me know and I will do so. Several people have complained about the lunches being held on Sunday, Should we change the day of the week or keep it on Sunday? Is there enough interest in continuing the lunches to keep them going? Or should we just cancel them altogether? Anyone out there have a burning need to be the lunch organizer? I would be more than happy to share! Last.. anyone have a good idea of where we can move the lunches to? Many complaints that Northern Quest was too far to travel! Remember that Sunday is one of the busiest days at restaurants, so a place like Perkins may not be a good choice! Your assignment is to provide feedback... I am leaving here sometime today [7/13] (by noon, I hope) - moving from Vancouver, WA to Richland. I have a daughter, 2 granddaughters and their spouses, and 3 great grandkids, plus my sister (LaRee CONNER Pratt ('50), and her 2 daughters and their kids. I have another granddaughter who lives in Yakima area. She has 2 babies. I'm leaving here where I have a daughter and son, and my daughter's son and 2 granddaughters. I must have moved 20 times (have never counted) before - with us and the 6 kids. This is the hardest move, ever. Doug ('52-RIP) isn't with me to help and lend muscles and a strong shoulder to lean on. I have Uma, my Dauschund, who loves to cuddle, and bark. She's been a support to me since Doug passed on, followed by my oldest daughter, Sharon, 8 months later. My daughter's widower has been very supportive, as has their daughter, who just got engaged. She has a brother, and he has a son, who will be four this winter. I will miss them terribly. We still haven't sold our 65 acres and our home in Goldendale, WA. Therefore - I'm renting - and praying hard that someone will come and appreciate the night sky, and all the wildlife, and the view of the Klickitat Valley. I'm anxious to get to Richland, and start getting reacquainted with Church Friends, and with my High School Friends. I have an unimaginable amount of Family History to enter into Ancestry.com. There will never be a time that I don't have some of that to be done. Seems like kids of today are born knowing how to connect online, and call up information. As a latecomer to computers, I know enough to get myself in big trouble, and my son Todd has bailed me out often enough. I have grandkids there that I can depend on. When I get an email address and get hooked up there, and get my stuff unpacked, I will let you know the new email address. My daughter, Susan, will be here shortly to disconnect my computers and pack my car. The U-Haul will leave here tomorrow [7/14]. I'm excited about our '52 Class reunion. I've always loved attending those. Those hard-working people who see to planning, and carrying out the celebrations don't get enough credit. Thanks, Ladies!!! My grandson will be coming back from Brazil the end of this month, where he has been for two years on a Mission. The other grandson is going to come in on leave from the Army. He's stationed in Texas. We'll be having a family party in Lynnwood when they get here. So much going on. Luv, Me -Betty CONNER Sansom ('52) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: David RIVERS ('65) Re: I love you Steve SIMPSON ('65) I'm writing this today so that I don't have to feel rushed when things start going further south than they already have. I want to include as much as comes to mind and won't push send until I feel I have it right... it will be long and disjointed for that reason and maybe not of much interest, in part, to some... that's why we have "scroll". I met Steve SIMPSON ('65) in the 6th grade. I only know that because that's when I went to Jason Lee... I don't remember meeting him, I just remember him being there alla time. Most of the time, if Steve was there, you knew Terry DAVIS Knox ('65) would be near. I remember him with his huge toothy grin... I mean toothy... At our 40th Reunion Steve and MURPHY ('65) were voted the kids who hadn't changed a bit (I'm sure you were runner up Cecilia ('65)). I remember the day Steve was working on a balsa wood plane and he made a cut with his trusty exacto knife using his leg to hold the wing of the plane... no need to explain further... he still has a large scar and got in trouble for ruining his new pants. Steve was the only other kid I know that Davis relished in tormenting. Terry would explain to me when we were in our 50s why he took such joy in "keeping me in my place" but I never knew why he did it with Steve. One thing, if there is a one thing, I have admired about Steve all these years is that he always saw "all the colors". I said that to Terry one day when Terry and I were going to pick up a car Erin's Grandfather had given them. He agreed. No matter how old we got, Steve never saw gray. The one thing that always made me feel deeply ashamed was a night a bunch of us were riding in Cappy HAINES ('63 RIP) baby blue '61 Ford Convertible (OK now kids... this is how I remember it... if Cappy never owned such a car don't confuse me with the facts, my mind's made up) and jumping off the back to see if we could run fast enough not to fall... I fell... badly and to avoid ruining the seats with blood and because I didn't feel so hot, I asked to be returned to my car at Zip's so I could maybe go home and lick my wounds... Steve was there as I got out of the car with his big toothy grin and I punched him in the stomach... years later, when I told him how sorry I was, he was totally gracious... And, to top things off... When, during R2K, my secret love since 7th grade, Mary Lou WATKINS ('63) demanded to know: "Who are you!?", Steve came to my rescue by saying: 'That's David Rivers, everybody knows David" Course it didn't keep me from peeing my pants... . I also have a vivid memory of the two of us going on a hay ride with some girls for a birthday party. I was with one cousin and he the other... Steve says he never went out with that girl (and would darn well remember if he did, but I did go with the other girl) and has no memory of the ride... See Jimbeaux ('63) sometimes we just don't know. When I bought my daughter, Sarah, a cute little VW convertible, it was Steve who picked it up and stored it for us till we could fly up to Seattle to pick it up One time Terry and I were trying to figure out how to pull down a very large Rail Road sign I had been stalking for years. The last one in the old turn table yard in L.A. that was original. I had been putting penetrating oil on the bolts for months and it was ready to be gently extracted. We took a rope over one morning and decided we would ruin it if it fell too hard. We needed another warm body. We called Steve and said he should fly down for dinner and then we'd all go to Muscle Beach. Steve bit and we went and had a wonderful dinner. Then we went to T's and got the rope. I gave Erin a credit card in case we ended up in the slammer. When we got to the sign, Steve wanted no part of our little 6th grade antics. Dunno if we went to Venice the next day or not. AS some of you know, the '65ers (fka Sorry 7) get together every year. It started at a reunion, when we wanted to take a picture of all the '65ers who were born at Kadlek. Naturally, kinda like the plan Number 32 ('63) and I of taking pix of all the Bomber Marines, we forgot till everyone had headed out. So a few of us piled in the back of Ricky WARFORD's ('65) pick-up and headed over. Jack KEENEY ('65) joined us so there were 7, five of which were born in Richland. (the best laid plans and all that)... Then Ricky said 5 year reunions were too long and we needed to meet every year, which we do. Tony HARRAH ('65) said we hadda get a bottle of wine and the last man standing gotta drink it. We laughed because we both thought of it about the same time. Can't fo the life of me remember what book, story or movie that thought came from. Maybe I should ask Tony. The others in the picture were Steve, Jimmy HEIDLEBAUGH ('65) and DAVIS. We all got copies of the picture which I framed and we all autographed them for each other. The "Sorry 7" was never meant to suggest we 7 were the best pals... just the ones who showed up for the picture. This year Steve changed the name of the gathering officially to the "Annual Bomber Gathering" We want anybody and everybody to show up! Our get together has changed over the years. We used to meet on Friday at 25 Margaritas or whatever it is called these days... I loved it because there were always tons of kids from other classes there... turns out some of the guys don't like the food and Steve always wanted to watch the CDN's parade. As luck would have it... the lovely Ms. BENNETT ('65) happened to buy a home which was right on GWWay near the uptown and it made the perfect spot to watch the cars. Our Saturday night parties were usually at Carl "Beaver" BEYER's and Sunday mornings we'd go to Brian JOHNSON's ('65) for breakfast. One particular Saturday night party was held at Lyman POWELL's ('65)... no clue why, but we decided to have a Toga Party and in between reruns of "Tour of Duty" I think we watched Animal House. This was Steve and Ruth's first public sleep over. Well you can just imagine... We met Ruth as Steve and she were pulling into the parking lot of the Hampton. Terry jumped out and mooned them. So the first glimpse of Terry Ruth ever got was Terry's hairy... uh you get the picture... T and I couldn't wait for Ruth and Steve to leave the hotel so we could give the a more formal welcome... Terry got the room key by charming some young thing at the desk and we set to work. Short sheets, shaving cream on the toilet seat, open all windows and screens and leave the lights on, unscrew the bathroom light and licked the key so it needed to be re keyed... All night long T and I played "Mission Impossible" Humming the theme very loudly... Steve even joined us... When they got to the room, Ruth needed the potty badly... the key didn't work... when Steve finally returned with new keys she knew something was amiss when the light wouldn't turn on... we were busted... When Steve was first diagnosed with the big c... or rather several big c's, we knew it wouldn't be long... as his health began to depart, we held his "Oh Sh...t Don't die before your party-party" at Tony HARRAH's up North... it was grand... Brian is convinced we haven't been invited back because of Brian's fire building skills... Tony says it isn't so. It was a huge gathering and we were able to do a "Sorry 7" remake... as well as several not so sorry Bomber-babe shots... Steve's new name during the last couple of years was "Simps" Gary CROW ('65) gave him that. Steve loved it. Steve and Jimbeaugh share the same birth date. So on his birthday after his "going away party" Steve had us all over for a joint Party. We let him know that if he continued to get better, there was still only one going away party per customer... Over the years, Steve and many of the guys, have come down to vegas for car show. They each get one of my cars and off we go. Steve has hadda ball. This January, Steve insisted that the Saturday Party be at his place. Given the state of his health last year and as we had talked over the months, I had my doubts. When June came, however, He looked better than I'd seen him in a long time. We walked for several hours on Thursday at the DQ and on Friday he and Ruth were at Ceci's with bells on. The rain made it so we had to stay in the house and he told us all it was the best seat he'd ever had for the car parade. It gave Steve time to talk to some kids he didn't often get to see. He spent a great deal of the evening telling Ellen WEIHERMILLER ('63) all about himself. One of his stories I overheard was one of Number 10 ('64) mentioning something to Steve about Steve... Steve was elated... "Ray STEIN knows who I am!" he exclaimed... see what i mean about still seeing alla colors? We were able to hold the Saturday night Party at Steve and Ruth's. The place was packed and Steve was a total social butterfly. A couple of us had commented to each other on how the desire to have the party may very well have given Steve the strength he needed to hang on. Steve was admitted to Kadlek on Thursday with brain swelling. The steroids worked well enough that he didn't have to go straight to Hospice. Steve is spending some time at home with his very special wife, Ruth. We are all indebted to Ruth and some of us have some minor understanding of what she has been going through. No Bombers are celebrating a birthday today! Don't you find that unusual? I know I do. The ol' propeller beanie is available for the celebration of birthdays and anniversaries of those I knew from days of yore, and so sits quietly on the shelf until the time comes. But to have sit through a drought is almost unthinkable. Come on, people, I know Bombers can arise to the call! Let someone step forth and proclaim the 18th of July as their natal day. Maybe, just maybe, they will get a tip of the ol' propeller beanie, or RIVERS will make mention of them. Naturally, the town was big enough to have several grade schools and I was fortunate enough to go to three during my early years. I am sure that the moving and first day of school proved to be "traumatic" to some extent. But for we boyz, ya kinda take it in stride. Besides, you usually knew somebody at the new school. And we only had Col-Hi, so everybody was in the same boat on that move and you just acted like you were too danged cool for school and breezed through that change as well. Also, you were moving in on the new beachhead with a ton of your buds to watch your back. Plus you were either driving or about to drive and all the new Bomber-babes, mixers, Hi-Spot and other sock hop type events to make school kind of the side-show to some of us... (yes I know... young, dumb and ... )... But... there was one event that for some of us created real problems. The post I referred to earlier, was one from Jack GARDINER ('61), recalling those of us who lived at or near the dividing line for Junior high. Spalding was one of those schools (actually, I'm not sure I know of any other schools with the same problem though I assume there might have been one or two more [Sacy was the other one...]), where half the kids would go to Chief Jo and the other half to... hmmm... oh shoot, I should recall the name of the school... started with a C I think... Carmichael, that's it... so anyway, Jack's post years ago always comes to mind when I think of the buds who were simply whisked away to never never land when we all entered Junior Hi. The birthday boy, was one of those whisked to Carmichael, which of course will always be remembered for its "hill" if nothing more... He went on to become quite a well respected Superintendent of Schools in various parts of our state and a construction worker of some repute as we learned this year at CDNs... He and Mills ('64) have been kicking around together these last few years and it's always great to see them show up... I recall during our 25 year reunion, I hit town a few dayz early to scope out all the old houses. When Tony HARRAH ('65) arrived, he and I drove around to recall where our old haunts had been. We made it a point to go to this guy's house and knock on the door. When his dad appeared, we said in unison: "Can Terry come out and play?" It was VERY funny at the time... hadda be there, I guess... so I sure hope my old (its ok to call guys old, ML ('63)) pal has a wonderful day on his special day, so HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Terry WERNER ('65) on July 20, 2012!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -David RIVERS ('65) ******************************************* ******************************************* That's it for today. Inscho, 55, saw an AARP Bulletin story last November about compensation available to veterans who had developed any of 21 cancers after witnessing atmospheric nuclear tests in the 1950s. Her dad, Charles Kenneth Storm, had battled lymphoma and colon and thyroid cancers before he died in 2007 at age 78. In January, Inscho filed a claim for her father with the U.S. Justice Department agency that administers the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA). Then you lag to see the shooting order. A player shoots from outside the circle and "wins" whatever they knock out of the circle. We all sought the bragging rights with the largest collection by size and style. I suspect you will get a lot of responses. I don't think any of my Grand kids have a clue. [All the GUYS who responded sent me to the same website: http://www.landofmarbles.com/marbles-play.html -Maren] -Steve CARSON (Championship Class of '58) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: David RIVERS ('65) Re: What every Bomber needs Had a cool experience at breakfast with the delinquents this morning... the place we eat always has TVs on but never any sound so as you are eating every now and then you might glance at the screen... I did that this morning just in time to see Fat Man rolled out of the hanger... my excitement was noticeable and all the guys turned to see what got me going... Of course they are well versed in Bomber lore as they've hadda put up with me for years and HEIDLEBAUGH ('65) during his years in Vegas... a fairly new guy asked where I was from and somebody at the table launched into the Tale of Three Secret Cities... he did a very good job I might add... they've seen my Bomber Key Chain with fat man on it and they've seen Fat Man and little Boy ear rings on my daughter... but there's one thing they might not have seen... I know I have one... I have a very early one... one of the proto-types... I know Mary Lou WATKINS ('63) has one and she's even let me hold it... so I'm wondering if you have one? Ya see ya might not know that one of our Alums was, for a while, a Bomb maker... he made swell bombs and they didn't go in your underwear or in your shoe... well I guess they could but they were not meant for that... well if you haven't guessed, I wanna wish Tom HUGHES ('56) a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY on his special day, July 29, 2012!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -David RIVERS ('65) ******************************************* ******************************************* That's it for today. I was on the fence as to whether to go all that distance from North Carolina, but that pushed me off. I got myself a reservation at brother Burt PIERARD's ('59) place as well as a plane ticket, and my check is in the mail to the class reunion point person, Luana IVERS Portch ('52). I look forward to seeing many of you there and hope my post encourages other undecideds to act accordingly. -Dick PIERARD ('52) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Lorin St.JOHN ('55) Re: Marbles Speaking of the old game of marbles which is not played by the youngsters any more: I have not seen a good game of marbles since I was in high school. My brother Keith St. John ('60) was pretty good at it when he was a kid. He won the Tri-City competition in the spring of 1954 (when he was 11) and finished 2nd in the all valley district tournament in Prosser. His picture was in the May 8, 1954 edition of the Yakima Herald. http://AlumniSandstorm.com/htm2012/Xtra/StJ/120730-MrblChamp.jpg Keith suffered a minor stroke this past June. He seems to be recovering quite well. -Lorin St.JOHN (Col-Hi 1955) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Peg SHEERAN Finch ('63) Re: Tickles me.. I think it's fun to remember playing marbles, pick-up sticks, jacks, etc. Now the warnings are everywhere... the kids will choke on the marbles and jacks, and the pick-up sticks will certainly put your eye out. (at least). I'm sooooo ready for Winter **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: David RIVERS ('65) Re: The organizer That time again... we gotta '65er who is always there for us at five year reunion time. Now I know Ms. HOFF ('64) is a Bomber- babe of action for all of us... If there's something to be done we count on her for way too much... in our class we gotta un- sung hero who always takes up the slack for those of us who either live too far away or just can't seem to find the time to help out. He's one a my ol' Spalding buds who was sent to never never land when we were all shipped off to the big schools to be semi-big kids in 7th grade... I'll always remember (tho I seem to be the only one) when he and Nina JONES ('65) would set up a library at his house and we could all check out books... I guess all kids do things similar... like doing plays and stuff, but that's the one I remember... so HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Gregor HANSON ('65) on his special day, July 30, 2012!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -David RIVERS ('65) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Valarie Peery Re: Bomberopoly The Richland High School Instrumental Music Boosters are having a Bomberoply Open House on Wednesday 8/8/12 at 6:30pm at the Richland Public Library. I never realized your birthdays were on the same day all these years. I just read "Going Rogue" by Sarah Palin and it was really fun to read a book that mentioned people like the Sheerans, and places, like Richland that I actually know. I hope to see a lot of fellow classmates from the best class of l962 at our 50 year reunion in August... I have my reservation in at the Red Lion, formerly Hanford House, formerly Desert Inn, I've never stayed there before... will be fun... my Japanese friend, Kazuko will not be with me this time, she has chosen to go to the Grand Canyon over our 50 year reunion, imagine... I am just glad I will be able to do both, seeing my grandson in Nevada both times, of course... Greetings from this hot spot in the midwest, but at least we have had some rain, so we will have a corn crop around here!! -Helen CROSS Kirk ('62) ~ Grandview, IN near the Ohio River, not the Columbia, but it will have to do... **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Gary BEHYMER ('64) Re: Columbian Yearbooks I just noticed that there are 2 Columbian yearbooks listed on eBay.com right now. I just got a note from Rex DAVIS ('49) letting me know he received an invitation to the event so he doesn't have to crash. I'm also getting a '62 shirt from my Pal, John ADKINS ('62)... Memo to Mary Lou WATKINS ('63) and Ellen WEIHERMILLER ('63) remember to invite Rex next year... Memo to Ms. HOFF ('64) invite Rex in 2014... Memo to Gregor HANSON ('65) remember to invite Rex to ours in 2015 (If I can get him invited to every reunion I will soon surpass his "crashing record"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)... It's funny, yesterday I was thinking of all the conversations I've had with Bombers about remember (insert subject) only to find that the event took place after grageashun night of the Class of '66. George KELLY ('64) and I were home on leave and we left the morning after the '66 grageashun. I never returned home for 19 years. No clue why... can't imagine missing even a year any more... so, many of those things I don't remember... but by the same token, as my Richland memories ended at age 19 I remember them vividly. When I first started coming home I was surprised that all the guys and Bomber-babes knew so many older and younger kids and some even called parents by their first names... (I didn't know parents had first names)... so it has taken me a little while to meet people I hadn't known when I was growing up (that's a laugh... growing up)... a good example is the Birthday boy... I am pretty sure that I first met him at Freddie SCHAFER's ('63-RIP) memorial a few years back (Rex was there too)... he was there with a good pal of mine, his lil' brother Mick ('66). Since then I've read him in the Sandstorm and he is now another Bomber-bud. He'll be going to the reunion, I'm sure, as he doesn't seem to miss much of anything Bomber and even hosts lunches. So here's a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Tom HEMPHILL ('62) on his special day, July 31 2012!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -David RIVERS ('65) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Mick HEMPHILL ('66) Re: Happy Birthday, Brudder July 31, 1944. A date I can't forget. It happens to be the birth date of my big brother, Tom HEMPHILL ('62). The main reason I can't forget the date is because when we were much younger he would reminded me every year about his time that it was my responsibility to find an appropriate gift for him. This year will be no exception, as my wife and I made a special trip to Spokane and Trader Joe's just to purchase a bottle of the finest merlot made by Charles Shaw (fondly known as two-buck Chucks). We will share it on your next visit back home.
