The OSU Beavers done good at the CWS (College World Series).
Had the Razorbacks right where they wanted them all the way.
The second game was better than the other two with a more
nail biting tone.
And, I note on the old Bomber calendar that there is a Bomber
celebrating a birthday today. To me he is one of the younger
fellows. To all of us he is know as a grand story teller and
whom we haven't from much lately. Trust all is well and he
hasn't fallen into one of those Burbank mud puddles.
A tip of the ol' propeller beanie and a "Happy Birthday!" to
George "Pappy" SWAN ('59). If you can, have a cool one.

Re: Grant RICHARDSON ('01) ~ Tri-Cith Herald
A STATE BASEBALL TITLE IS THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON
GIVING
By Annie Fowler
Richland, WA
"Good new travels fast, and to some pretty remote
camping sites.
Richland baseball coach Grant RICHARDSON ('01) was
at Sun Lakes on Thursday when he heard the news
that he was named the Coach of the Year for the
USA Today American Family Insurance All-USA
Washington Baseball Team.
'I didn't even know that existed,' RICHARDSON
('01) said. 'Josh Jelinik (Richland assistant
football coach) texted me a screen shot of it.'
RICHARDSON ('01) , who coached the Bombers to the
4A state title in May, was just as happy for his
outfielder, Josh MENDOZA ('18), who was named to
the first team, along with Tri-Cities Prep
sophomore Logan Mercado.
'That is awesome. I'm pumped for Josh,' RICHARDSON
('01) said. 'He was a four-year starter for me. He
did some unbelievable things. That is a neat honor
for him.'
Richland (18-10) beat Skyview 5-2 for the state
title.
'People can look at our record all they want, but
if they look at our last six games, we did some
special things,' RICHARDSON ('01) said. 'We
finished 11-1 in our last 12 games, and outscored
opponents 46-5 in our last six. Holy smokes, the
boys played good baseball.'
RICHARDSON ('01) won a state title with Richland
as a player in 1999, then was an assistant at
Kamiakin in 2012 when the Braves won the 3A title.
Now, he has one as a head coach.
'This is the gift that keeps on giving,' he said.
'There were a lot of good things we got to
experience together. We went to Safeco Field and
were honor by the Mariners. We were honored by the
Dust Devils. If I could coach that group of kids
for the next 20 years, it would be the best 20
years of my life. This award is because of their
hard work.'
MENDOZA ('18), who announced earlier this week he
would play football at Eastern Oregon University,
was a first-team all-Mid-Columbia Conference
outfielder, and an all-state selection.
He hit .465 and struck out just four times during
the season. Of his 40 hits, 30 were singles, along
with nine doubles and one home run. He drove in 27
runs and scored 22 times. There is no stat line
for amazing sliding catches - and there were
plenty.
'I was caught by surprise,' MENDOZA ('18) said.
'It's a great honor. It's a big deal for me and
coach Grant. What we accomplished was huge. No
matter what award I get, we did a good job putting
Bomber baseball back on the map.'
Mercado, who led the Jaguars (25-2) to the 2B
state title, was the EWAC Player of the Year and
the 2B all-state Player of the Year.
On the mound, Mercado was 10-1 with 123 strikeouts
and a 1.67 ERA. In 95 plate appearances, he struck
out just three times. He hit .441 with nine
doubles, five triples, two home runs, 33 RBIs and
19 stolen bases.
The All-USA Player of the Year was Selah junior
Carter Young, the state's Gatorade Player of the
Year. Young hit .412 with four home runs and 47
runs scored for the Vikings (20-3), who lost in
the second round of the 2A state tournament."

Re: Friends and friends a friends who become friends
Wow, today is the BD of one of the first neighbors I can
actually remember as well as a guy who married the girl I
drooled over at noon dancing but never had the nerve to ask
to dance... Had I done so, I know her first words to me in my
whole life would have been "WHO ARE YOU!?" and I woulda been
crushed and never come outa my shell again... Oh wait...
those were the first words she spoke to me in my whole
life... I guess I survived... So as I recall, we moved a ton
a times over my life... First, we lived with another family
on Stevens across from Jo Marie ROBERTS ('65) and Lyman
POWELL ('65)... that one I don't recall... then we moved to
Pullen where I met the B-day Bomber... after that we moved to
1309 Haines next to the REED/LIBKY family... at that point
we had lived (by ourselves) in a ranch and an "F" house...
guess my pop liked ranch houses because we then moved to 1301
Acacia on the dividing line between Chief Jo and Carmichael
across from Spalding... then for reasons I have disclosed
many times before, we headed back to another "F" house at
Stevens and VanGiesen... now, though my father made me
believe it was totally my fault we made the move, I am
thinking that was about the time houses went on sale in
Richland and as I am now older than 11 or 12 when he told me
I was the worst thing that ever happened to his family... I
have a strong suspicion he wanted to buy that "F" house alla
time... in any event it sure made my next few years magic
living across from "the Park" and "the Parkers" ('60, '63-RIP
& '65)... man... that morning lecture aside... it just don't
get much better than that for a soon to be young teen... but
back to current reality... HAPPY BIRTHDAY, John DALE ('63)
and Van WATKINS (NAB)... that doesn't sound right for some
reason??????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, I would propose to the governing board of Club 40 that
they amend the name of their scholarship to include that of
Dick McCOY ('45, '46, and '02 R.I.P.) as the lead name. Not
only was he a Founding Father of the club; he was also

For the above reasons, I recommend you do it sooner rather
than later.

no one admits it at this time. But there was a bunch of
Bombers taking lunch on Gage Street. Hope they had a good
time.
All of the above is mere icing on the cake. There is a Bomber
Babe having a birthday today. She won't say which one, but if
there are more than 24 candles on the cake someone will hear
about it. I think we graduated at the same time, as she was
several rows back, I can't be too sure.

A special birthday to our special sisters, Jackie and Judie.
Why so special? Judie is fighting a rare cancer and winning!!
Jackie and Judie have that strong, unusual connection that
identical twins share, so this has been especially difficult
for Jackie too. The bond they share is truly amazing. Have a
wonderful day you two, and know that you are much loved.

Re: The Flash
Now today was a fine how do ya do... dang... got up...
took car into dealer to have one of the killer air bags
replaced... had the other one done a year ago... why can't
they just recall both sides at one time. It was finished
rather quickly and I went over and picked it up... and then
filled up with gas... now when I pulled out, I should have
noticed an older lady (not sure if she's older than I but
time had not been kind to her in any event) behind me
changing lanes to make it to a light a split second before
anyone else... unfortunately, I only gave her a brief
glance... as I approached the on ramp she was really getting
aggressive... as I entered the ramp she tried to swing around
me where there was no room while blowing her horn and waiving
her hand in the windshield... before I could do anything she
went around me (in the gravel?)... and then WHAM, slammed her
car into mine, dang... off she took... as we got onto the
freeway she slowed and I thought she was going to pull off
the road... I slowed and pulled onto the shoulder... at that
point she took off like a shot... luckily I got her plate
number... I drove to Metro to make the report and as told
that I had to go to Highway Patrol... which was further in
the wrong direction than I had been earlier... I went home,
reported the accident and confirmed that I needed to traverse
Vegas yet again to make the report. Once finished I headed
home again, having accomplished none of the stuff I really
wanted to do... I can now say I've seen road rage up close
and personal... now... lemme seg way into something else...
had I been a tad faster in my thinking I might have avoided
my trials of this morning... speaking of fast, I watched a
movie last night where several super heroes got together to
fight battles as Super Man was dead (but only for a little
while)... I think one of them was flash (he had a little
lighting bolt on his little suit)... anyway he was fast as
could be... now I can't say he was fast as the flash, but I
can say this guy blew the doors... arms? off competitors on
the track... fast was an understatement... So HAPPY BIRTHDAY,
Billy "Bill' RULON ('64) on your special day, June 10, 2018!!

A sad announcement: my older sister passed away on March 12,
2018, in Florida. Gretta GRENINGER Moore went to Chief Jo but
not Columbia High.
She attended St. Paul's School in Walla Walla. She was a
graduate of the class of '55. Gretta also attended Whitman.

Re: Riding Academy
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at the Riding Academy.
I was part of a class taught by Lee Linderoff and it was
wonderful. I was thrown from a horse on a fast gallop and
landed on my back. I was probably about 10 years old and
never told my parents. In my 20s I was diagnosed with a
herniated disc and the doctor said it was probably from
that fall. But it hasn't bothered me lately and I'm just
about 70 now.
What a great place that was and in addition to the class,
I rode on my own in that desert for many years.

I see the Tooter ('65) has learnt a life lesson: Don't get in
the way of people who are in a hurry; they will try to put
dents in your car. Some have even been known to shoot at
other drivers. It are a scary world out there.
On a happier note, there is a Bomber from my era celebrating

it's his birthday to do with it however.

Re: Corvairs and Canadian Mercs
Talk about a long friendship... this Bomber was the son of
my Pop's bestest friend... they were about as close as
anyone I have ever seen... Once we broke down way out in the
boondocks... I mean way way... his pop climbed in the car
and drove up towing us back with a rope or a chain... now
that's buddies... We spend hours and hours together... he
vividly recalls going with us to Pow Wows and one thing he
particularly recalled, was a braided whip that hung from the
radio of my dad's car... according to this kid, my dad was
deadly but never missed his target... Inna old days I am
pretty sure we bought most of our furniture from his Dad...
we also used one of his company trucks for about every move
we ever made... I went to work for his Dad while at Col-Hi
and for some reason thought we got the day off after
gradgeashun wrong! Today, if you are looking for that lovely
fluffy red chair or other piece of fine decor, you can find
this kid where one would always find his father... in the
kinda office at Richland Bell Furniture... As I have already
told a good deal about him... thankfully I don't have to
comment on his taste in old cars... wheeeeeeeew! HAPPY

This is one of those Bomber-babes that if I didn't know I

now I don't think she's really a cowgirl but she gives that

fun to be around... when Terry DAVIS Knox ('65) was doing his

consider for their retirement. Richland, Washington was the
2nd city they listed. They put heavy emphasis on all the
recreation opportunities the river offers.
I would love to retire in Richland if my grandkids would
relocate also. I sort of like just being able to drop in on

Now that we have once again thwarted Friday the 13th, we can
get on to other things. Like, fer instances, there is a
Bomber Babe whom I know is celebrating her birthday today.
All in all, I would say she is holding out very well at a
young 26 years. This may be possible because of a Spudnut
diet which doesn't work for me. I know the Junior Gyrene
('65) has a tendency to dote on them.

subject. That's right. Sort of a universal acknowledgement
of a dual Bomber Babe birthday. Well, these two came as an
entry. The only time I remember seeing them was when their

longer allowed?)... Oh no... no no no how could I... but a
quick glance at my cheat sheet lemme know she was just
getting in there to let us know about one of our b-day
Bomber-babes health issues (I don't care for the word
issues... it got over used... don't like disrespect as a verb
either... but where was I?... now I would have been sorely
upset with myself had I missed an HB to two of the coolest
twins I've ever known... They say the Bobbseys were pretty
spiffy, but nothing compared to our babes... I'm certainly
hoping both can make it in September... I have decided not
to order milk at any time. If I don't order it I can't spill
it... a few years back as Lamont ('63) was wading in the

threw half a bottle of water on David SIMPSON ('63) and

completely dry and seemed to have forgotten... wheeeeeeeew...

It has been an arduous month, but my 2 roommates and I (we
jokingly call ourselves "The New Golden Girls") are settled
into our new home on Satus St. in the newer South Richland.
The house is roomier than the "little one" and has some very
nice features as well as lacking some of the nicer features of
the other one. I'm not happy with the appliances I bought from
Fred's Appliances but its not the store's fault. For instance,
who ever heard of a new dryer not having the "wrinkle guard"
choice? And maybe I'm just spoiled, but I like a microwave
that beeps off and on until the door is opened. This one beeps
5 rapidly and then there is nothing to indicate that something
is in there that needs attention. But, I'm very happy with the
used side-by-side frig/freezer I got from Garrison's. My first
time ever to have ice and water in the door! Oddly enough, the
house has only one outside faucet and it is in the front yard.
There are a couple of dry areas in the large back yard. I
brought one hose over from the other house before I realized
there is only 1 faucet. I'll bring 2 more over and hope they
will reach the back. I was surprised to find an apple tree!
The apples have worms but a friend suggested cutting the bad
parts out and making applesauce with the rest. The lawn is
lovely and, for the most part, nicely landscaped. Last
Saturday, Juan, my "yard man" (I'm thinking I should call him
my Gardener) took out 2 of the shrubs I didn't want, trimmed
the back hedge and replaced a faulty sprinkler head. We will
do more trimming of shrubs next week. Next month, I'll get the
roof put on over my deck! Then I can bring the upholstered
deck furniture over. I still have some boxes to unpack but
they are low on the priorities list. Actually, I still have
stuff over at the other house. (No hurry because my youngest
daughter is buying it and renting it to her youngest daughter
and 2 grandchildren. They moved in before I moved out!) I used
Three Brothers Moving and was pleased with their work and
their price.
I'm kind of dog-sitting and although she is very nice in most
ways, we can't keep her out of the kitchen and her feet and
mouth off the counters. We put the trash can in the laundry
room at night so she can't get into it. She is said to have
gone to obedience training but either the owner was too busy
or too tired to enforce what was learned. She is terrified of
my cat so we keep them separated because the dog goes crazy
with barking and yelping when they see each other. They take
turns with either Harley being locked outside or Tessa is
locked in my bedroom. Not an ideal arrangement.
So, anyway, any of you are so inclined, come over for a visit.
Call first (same number) to be sure I'm home.
Bomber regards to each and all,

Maren asked in a previous edition if I would relate to the
plethora of names. Are you really hurting that much for
"news"? Why not suggest readers look in the Alumni Sandstorm
archives?
Truth be told, only the last name has been changed between the
time I entered third grade until the time I enlisted in the
Army. The people at the recruiting station said I would have
to use the name on my birth certificate as there was no legal
adoption of the name during that period.
This is all unimportant. What is important is that a Bomber
Babe is having a birthday today. Oh, right, there may be more
than one having a birthday today. Well, this one I went to
school with and I know that we graduated at the same time. I
saw her, she was in the line ahead of me. However, I don't
think that she was "lookin' back at me."
A tip of the ol' propeller beanie and a "Happy Birthday!"

It sounds like Em ('52) is having fun. She now has a gardener.
So, I'm wondering when does she get a pool-boy?????????
All very interesting, but not to the point. Yep, another
Bomber Babe is celebrating a birthday today. It is too bad
that she recently moved so far east that she will not be able
to attend this Friday's lunch at the Richland Applebee's.
Maybe there is one close by to where she is now living. Don't
know how she would be able to communicate with Marilynn ('54)
and the gang directly.
A deep flourish of the ol' propeller beanie and a "Happy

Re: Maybe not "the greatest" but damn close
My admiration for number 32, HOUSE, Jim, Captain, USMC, 1 ea.
is no secret... to hear that his "Court of Dreams" is becoming
a reality made me very proud. It is not always that we can
give back to our community or that we choose to do so. I am
also proud of the members of our little famblie who have
served our town in its governance... As far as I am concerned,
that was probably the last thing on my mind during my 19 years
residence (OK 1.5 of them were lived in a Boarding House in
East Pasco, but then I wasn't quite as aware of jurisdictional
lines except for police offences with which I was mildly
familiar.) But I am just about as happy as I can be that Jim
will be able to see his dream come true. I know that Ray STEIN
(#10, '64) will do his very best to get his life-long friend
to the ribbon cutting... I hope that the same will be true of
the '63 reunion, although I know it is a great deal to
expect... But Jim is not the only one who has my admiration...
The group of Bombers within my current circle of friendship
and beyond reflect what is good about America and our town in
particular. Now the last time I vividly recall seeing today's
B-day Bomber, was at the dedication of Pook's ('63) bench.
I visit those benches every time I am home and I just enjoy
sitting and remembering in the early morning hours or just
before turning in for the night. Thank all of you for being
who you are and for making my life just a little bit better
as I trudge the road of happy destiny and HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Rod

>>From: David DOUGLAS ('62)
I hate to see Maren having to do double duty as both editor
and contributor to the Alumni Sandstorm, so here's my modest
submission.
Monday, July 9, kicked off Arizona's monsoon season. The
temperature while I was driving home from my morning writer's
group meeting was 102. I ate lunch and took a nap. I was
awakened about 3pm by World War III. I looked out the back
window to see who was attacking us. The flowerbeds were white.
At first I thought it was snow, although generally speaking
snow is fairly quiet. Then I noticed marble-sized hail
bouncing off the patio. Also, the wind was terrific - it blew
off one of the trellises I had erected to provide some privacy
for our swimming pool. When the storm finally passed I went
outside to see what else might have been damaged. The other
side of our back wall is a community park/rain catch basin.
The large tree beside the wall was gone, with only a few bare
branches sticking up. I climbed up on a bench seat to look
over the wall and discovered the tree was still there, it had
just fallen over. What I thought were branches were actually
roots. Trees all over the neighborhood had been uprooted. The
HOA has a landscape company that takes care of the foliage.
They cut off the branches of the tree behind our house a
couple of days ago, and took the roots away yesterday.
Actually, I won't miss it too much. Most of the afternoon it
shaded the sensor for our solar pool heater, which would turn
it off. I had to run the heater in test mode until it was warm
enough by 2pm to heat the pool to a comfortable temperature.
Our next door neighbor was out looking at his roof. Several
houses in the neighborhood had considerable roof damage, so I
decided I better check mine. The edge of the front roof had
some of the concrete tiles out of place, and pieces of one
tile were laying on the ground. I called our homeowner's
insurance and filed a claim; I figured I'd better get my
request in early as it would take a while for an adjuster to
get to us. I wasn't feeling well, so I waited until Tuesday to
get out my 11-foot ladder to look at the damage up close. It
actually was minimal. Seven of the heavy tiles had been
flipped upside down. Five were intact, so I put them back,
although I couldn't replace the nails intended to hold them
because they were covered up by the next higher row of tiles.
l replaced two broken tiles, since I had lots of extras taken
off the roof when our solar system was installed. I drilled
holes in the tiles and screwed them down. One triangular-
shaped piece had fallen off and broke; I have to find someone
who can cut a new triangle from a full tile. I called and
cancelled the insurance claim.
The only other loss was one of our two roof-mounted TV
antennas; the one pointed toward Tucson was fine, but the
South Mountain Phoenix antenna was scattered all over the back
yard. I salvaged the dipole and a couple of reflectors and
hooked it up to the TV in the guest bedroom, which I watch as
my wife only watches Netflix Asian movies.
Okay, none of this is earth-shattering news (although the hail
on the roof was ear-shattering), but maybe Maren can save it
for another "NOT" Sandstorm instead of having to write
something herself. Thanks, Maren.

So Maren doesn't have to send out "NOT" issues.
Just a word of warning about some disturbing robo phone calls
I've been getting.
I never answer my land line if I don't recognize the caller
or number shown on the handset. I figure if someone needs to
speak with me they will leave a message and I'll call back. I
have signed up on the do not call list and renew it often. Now
I'm getting threatening messages about not returning a call
to a number to fix a problem with my social security number.
I also am getting the same regarding my charge cards, banks,
and Medicare information. The voice sounds the same on each of
these calls. I'm aware that these type of calls are scams and
I want to make it clear that no one should regard these calls
as legitimate. None of these entities will call you. They will
send a letter by regular or certified mail!
My sister-in-laws's mother answered one of these calls and
provided all of her information to them. Now the family is
dealing with that aftermath.
PLEASE be aware that this is happening and DO NOT respond to
these calls.

Re: Celebration of Life for Dick McCOY ('45-RIP)
What a wonderful large friendly family that Dick left behind.
Irl FRENCH ('51) and I were the only ones from Club 40, but
the whole family knew about Club 40 and what fun we have as
well as our scholarships. Several of us tried to talk Ida to
come over this September. Even one of the relatives said they
would drive her over. We will keep trying to make that happen.
I must say we learned a lot about Dick and the family loved to
share his mis-deeds. Won't print them here but Irl and I can
tell you about them when we meet in September. Dick was also
a very busy volunteer throughout the area, in all kind of
organizations. Very much loved and admired man.
One thing we didn't know was that Dick was an avid painter and
they had quite a few of his paintings on display. I wish I'd
had my camera so I could take pictures of them to put in our
Dust Storm (hey, that's an idea I can write about Dick and his
growing up antics in the Dust Storm) There is a water tower
someplace with "OK by Dick" painted on it, as one of the
examples.
Also while driving to Stanwood I was thinking about David
RIVERS ('65) and his "old white haired women driver" and I
started getting paranoid as driving North on I-5 cars would
whiz past me and get a great distance ahead and I would be
driving all the lanes by myself and then another batch would
come by and drive past me. I got to thinking I'm not that bad
of a driver but figured they had heard from David to look out
for old white haired lady drivers. But after talking to Irl
he said they were doing the same to him. We were obeying the
speed limit and these fast cars weren't. At least that
explanation made me feel better.
Well I have more to say but I wanted to praise Dick's family
for a wonderful memorial for him, and I'll write again.

So, on that note, let us move on to more important issues. You
know what I mean. That's right, yet another Bomber birthday of
someone I know. It is said that we graduated at the same time.
I wouldn't know. You see, we were lined up according to Mr.

line to sit with someone. So, if we did graduate together, he
was in the line behind me. Did I hear his name announced,

Wow having been gone a month the yard grass has gone to seed.
Well at least the auto watering system worked in the flower
beds and planters on the porch. Shucks... the cucumbers
failed. For as long as I can remember I have had several
plants every year supplying all I could eat. I make several
kinds of salad all using cukes. The last couple of years I
find myself eating more salads and less other stuff. And it
has worked. I am now more then 50 lbs. lighter. Only 46 lbs
to go to get to 199. At the price and quality of beef in the
stores I am glad to enjoy a good pork chop or small pork
steak and lots of salad with my own custom dressing.
Chuck LOLLIS ('74) and I have our Dutch Harbor. AK crew
trained and competent and liking what they are doing. Setting
up a large complex display under unusual conditions and in
the midst of the Bering Sea weather can be a real challenge.
But having a trained crew who like what they are doing makes
a huge difference. This last display went smooth and looked
good in the sky.
Chuck took us all out to dinner at the hotel. With all-you-
can-eat king crab, it is easy to get stuffed. The guys were
well pleased and looking forward to NYE. And the crew we have
now make it easier to look forward to going out there.
I have a wedding show to do and so will miss the annual Club40

He said he was calling wanting a donation for the Police Guild

hard job they have!!! He said stay on the line and his manager
would come on to get more information. When someone did, he
wanted a credit card number!! They used to send an envelope
with a return envelope for my check. Being suspicious I said
sorry but I won't give you my credit card number and hung up.
It's too bad if they were legitimate but couldn't take the
chance.
I also stopped giving to people with signs asking for money.
I saw a man with a cardboard sign in the Safeway parking lot
and 15 minutes later putting the sign down next to the door

I drove up to Richland to visit with one of my "bestest"
friends---Nester WISE ('63) and I have known each other for
over 60 years---grew up almost next door to each other and
since we are only five hours apart now, we planned a get-
together at his house---this was the second time we've gotten
together, since my moving from CA to Idaho---decided it was
time to "do this" again---we were supposed to have been joined
by another "childhood/bestest" friend, Carol WILEY Wooley
('63), but health problems kept her from being able to make
the drive down from the Seattle area---this getting older sure
isn't great for the "over 70 crowd"---we all three have health
problems that have kept us from getting together as often as
we'd like---"getting older sure ain't for sissies"---but, as
long as we can, we will make the effort to see each other as
much as we can. Another get together is planned, and we are
keeping fingers crossed that Carol's health will improve
enough, that she will be able to join in the "funstivities"
(yes, I KNOW that isn't a word, but just seemed like combining
fun and festivities was the only way to describe the time we
had... .*grin*). To "top off the visit" my daughters even went to

Re: Scamming the elderly.
My father was a prime target for the scam artists. When I
lived with him for six months after he turned 80, I found out
how vulnerable he really was. It started when I discovered the
"CONGRATULATIONS!! You've won the Irish Lottery." I casually
asked when he'd visited Ireland. To my certain knowledge he'd
never been east of Chicago in 40 years. He was only slightly
embarrassed until I pressed him... "How many of these letters
do you have?" "Er... um... I dunno." Nonsense, he knew exactly
how many letters promising free money he'd received. There
were 14... he'd won everything from the Irish Lottery to a
very official looking letter from the Socail {sic} Security
Administration telling him he'd been underpaid since he
started drawing and Soc Security would pay him every dime
they'd forget to include.. All he had to do was call them.
(he didn't, but it was on his Things To Do When Bored list)
He'd get at least three "checks" a month. Always a man of
honor (and greed) he took every one of them to the bank, only
to have the cutest teller in the place (he'd wait) tell him it
was worthless and explain again how the scam worked.
He did answer one. A "Christian" Nigerian Prince offered him
$10 million dollars. All he had to do was give them his bank
account number and each month Thousands of Dollars would find
their way into his account. To verify they were working with
someone serious, they required a $2500 "surety check" which
would be held and "never cashed" and returned with their first
deposit. That's when I got there and stopped any transfer of
any money, or numbers. Still, he'd arranged for the "managers
of the fund" to meet at his house and collect the $2500... in
cash now... they'd changed that aspect due to a new change in
"International Banking Regulations". My plan was to have these
gentlemen meet at his house, along with the local police.
Needless to say, the Prince's representatives didn't show up.
He always wondered why he kept getting this stuff... and
several more. He could never quite understand that his name
was on a list of "Live Ones!" and such lists were commonly
sold and shared around the world.
Steamboat's gone now, He'd be the perfect sucker for one of
the two most recent scams. Most who use the computer recognize
the scam that "locks" your computer... and only "a certified
Micro Soft engineer" can fix the problem. When you call, you
get India... and the real clue here is that as a form of
payment, they want $500....in iTune cards.
One of the more recent is the IRS scam. You'll get a call on
your land line telling you a warrant has been issued for your
immediate arrest for cheating on your tax returns. In fact,
the police are on their way to haul you to tax court and
then to prison for at least 5 years. My advice is to hang up
immediately. If you're savvy enough to lead them on and waste
their time (they're paid commission, time on phone, amount
scammed... this is a Multi Million dollar business so there

Re: OK
I am going to weigh in with a somewhat adult post.
I own and operate a radio station in Lakewood (south Tacoma),
KLAY 1180. Yes, we stream. I even do a weekly local two hour
show Fridays 8-10:00 am. I try to keep it local or at least
topics of local community interest. Over the last few years I
have had a number of guests join me to talk about all sorts of
scams. All I can say is the variety and frequency is growing.
The scams are everywhere. I have had guests join the show
talking of IRS, Microsoft, local utilities, almost any sort of
bill paying, it is endless related scams. The real origin of
all this is bad / fraudulent charity solicitation. Leveraging
our charitable mindset around the holidays Christmas season
and giving really gave birth to all this, even prior to the
internet growth.
Of course the internet and robo calling [using computerized
autodialer - robot like] has enabled the current explosion.
As irritating as those calls are they are even more convincing
to some of us.
Easy simple advice I have heard (and most of us have) is
simply: Do not EVER respond. I have had local / regional law
enforcement people, utilities, state officials, IRS, bank card
folks ALL tell us the same thing:
They and their agencies will NEVER EVER simply call you on
the phone demanding payment. NEVER! Even if you get an e-mail
that appears credible, verify it, follow up with a call. My
wife claims it is better to answer the phone then immediately
hang up. She feels not answering will result in repeat calls.
I am not sure about that.
Just tell everyone you know... just don't respond. I know,
Bombers are WAY too sharp to fall for this!

I had a similar experience driving up Hwy 101 along the
Oregon/Washington Coast about three years ago. I wanted to go
slow and see all of the beautiful scenery. It was almost
impossible. I was going the speed limit and people were passing
me and lining up behind me. It was so busy and not enjoyable. I
don't plan to do it again. I have been that route several times
over the years and do not remember it being anything like that
trip.
I had an experience recently just going out of our little town
heading north. There were several cars which is unusual. I was
going the speed limit and a car roared past me and came
extremely close to hitting an oncoming car head on. The oncoming
car had to go off the road to avoid being hit. I sped up and got
a picture, but could not catch up enough to get a clear picture
of the license plate, so wish I had!! I have had two warning
tickets on county roads around this area so I set my cruise
control now and I always get passed, even on the freeway!! I am
sure everyone is cussing "the little old lady".
You should have seen me driving a motor home a few years ago for
the first time. We chose to go from Utah to Arkansas, and in
Colorado didn't want to go on the freeway. I think it was
Highway 50 that we were on. Wanted to see "everything". BIG
MISTAKE. Did I say I am terrified of heights and my husband
cannot drive. Never been that scared!!! Got home eventually, and
put the motor home up for sale!
Hope I didn't bore you but highways are more of a challenge when
you become "a little old lady"!!

Simple rules to live by: Don't answer the phone if you don't
know who the caller is and don't give to persons begging in the
street. There is a tale about street begging in Sherlock Holmes.
Guy lost his job, took to begging and made more money than he
did working. The fly in the ointment was that his wife saw him
above a seedy and suspicious pub and called Sherlock to find
him as he had disappeared when she entered the building. My
philosophy on this matter is: "Beat it ya bum, I' woiking dis
side oda street."
All very colorful, I'm sure; but not as colorful as two Bomber

Re: Plastic Straws
Where did this come from all at once? First I heard they
(McDonald's?) were going to test paper straws. They don't need
to test paper straws, just ask us old geezers, used to be they
were all made of paper. I would say they "suck," but the truth
is they DON'T suck. If you are drinking lemonade, ice tea, or a
pop, and do so quickly enough, they might be OK, but drinking a
milk shake, they get soggy and collapse, So if you are drinking
a milk shake or a malt you can figure on using at least three
straws. Cities, states, McDonald's Starbucks, et. al. have
already, or are going to ban them. Even talking about using a
new type of lid that doesn't need a straw. Great! Now they want
me to drink out of a sippy cup! I've see they have come up with
glass straws, a fold-able metal straw (comes with a cleaning
kit, but I wonder how well that gets the joints.) Make them of
bamboo, but I wonder. Bamboo would have to be sterilized, and I
think that would be hard to do unless you irradiated them. That
would put a lot of people off!!! Most people don't seem to know
that if you sterilize something by radiation it does not make it
radioactive.

speed limit. After we got out of Seattle heading East, if you
were not going at least 70 you got run over. I think I was doing
75 when I looked out my window and saw State Patrol guy pass me
right on by. We made a good number of trips to Seattle in those
days and it was always the same.

idea why I thought something like that like a bolt out of the

Re: Helping Homeless People/Beggars
When I lived & worked in downtown Seattle I had two
opportunities that really opened my eyes to the difference
between homeless people and beggars.
A group of us from work had gone to lunch and passed a man
begging on the street corner. We took up a collection and bought
him a meal. On our way back to work we tried to give him the
meal. He ended up screaming and cussing at us that he didn't
want the meal - he just wanted money to buy alcohol.
The second opportunity came when my husband and I had gone
shopping at a local grocery store on lower Queen Anne and there
was a beggar at the door. We bought him a meal that consisted of
a couple hoagie sandwiches, chips & a drink. When we left the
store, we told him we wouldn't give him money but that we'd
bought him a meal. He was very grateful and told us all he was
trying to do was get money to buy some food. He immediately
started eating. That was a homeless person and he was grateful
that we'd thought to help him.
I've read many articles that recommend you keep gallon baggies
in your car filled with the following essentials to hand out
to the homeless (if you're so inclined). Here are some of the
recommended items: bottle of water, socks, toothbrush,
toothpaste, trail mix, Ibuprofen, Kleenex. For around $30, you
can go to the Dollar Store and make 6 bags. Other articles
suggest baggies filled with fruit and healthy snacks. If a
person is truly homeless, they will really appreciate whatever
you give them.

It's not "white haired" ladies driving along at 55 on the 101
(where legal to do so); it's the idiots in big, hulking RVs
doing 30 that get my goat. Especially when they won't pull over
to let fast traffic pass; which is, by the way, a state law in
Oregon. Our tax dollars even pay for the highway department to
make, pave, and sign slow vehicle turnouts.
However, that rule is not really enforced as it should. There
have been one or two minions of the law getting into deep doo-
doo for pulling over a tourist blocking the road. Apparently
it is not fair to take tourist dollars in the form of traffic
fines. Bilking them at souvenir stands is perfectly good
business.

Re: My Underwater World
Circa 1967, shortly after joining a small dive club in Camas, WA,
I began hearing stories of how to catch giant North Pacific
Octopus. I was excited to see an octopus, but I was a bit scared
as well. I didn't really know what to expect. I had visions of
this huge aggressive creature with eight long tentacles,
wrapping me up and squeezing me to death.
Finally, after a few dives in Puget Sound I saw my first live
octopus underwater. He/she was inside of a 3-foot long, 8-inch
pipe and I didn't know how to get him/her out, and perhaps I
wasn't sure if I wanted him/her out. I hauled the pipe, octopus
and all, up the slope and to the beach. Once out of the water,
the octopus exited the pipe and I had my first catch. For the
record, octopus are legal to catch and good to eat. However, a
few years later, after an extremely close encounter with a very
large male octopus, I made the decision to never again remove
one from their natural habitat. I'll save that story for last.
I've never thought of a clam being very smart, but octopus are
related to clams and octopus are very smart. In captivity each
octopus has their own personality and they can identify certain
people, especially the ones who feed them. When my good friend
Tom Henderson was 16 years old, he captured a small octopus and
brought it home to keep in his 200-gallon aquarium. Tom would go
diving every weekend and bring home a few buckets of live crab
to feed his pet. One day I was visiting Tom and he told me to
open the door of his room and stand there to see how his pet
would respond. I opened the door and the octopus began to come
out from behind a rock, but when he spotted me, he slid back
behind the rock to hide. Then Tom walked into the room and the
octopus shot to the glass to greet him, and to get fed.
I was diving with a group in Hawaii and a lady diver speared a
small octopus with a small pole spear. The octopus began moving
up the spear and reach out for her arm. She panicked and dropped
the spear. I was close, so I grabbed the spear then griped the
octopus and slid it off the spear, then put it inside of a bag.
It was a small species, perhaps only eight or 10 pounds. It
wrapped his tentacles around my bare arm and I ended up with
several rows of hickies that would be cool to show at the bar
later to enhance my sea stories. But they went away before I
could begin my story-telling that afternoon.
On a Sunday afternoon at Hood Canal (an inlet on the west side
of Puget Sound), after two days of training new divers and
getting them qualified to receive their diving certification,
one of my staff, a female, asked me if I could show her an
octopus. I told her to not say anything about our mission. I had
a special reef that nobody went to because it was a long swim,
and I did not want anyone to know about it. This out-of-the-way
reef was my favorite place for underwater photography where I
could always find lots of octopus and many other critters as
well.
We quietly swam away from the rest of the divers and made our
way to the top of the reef. We descended to a depth of 60 feet
and swam along a rock wall. There was a long, deep diagonal
crevasse along the wall. I shined my dive light inside of the
crevasse and spotted two small octopus. I backed off and
motioned to my dive buddy to come down and take a close look.
As she was watching the two, small octopus, I swam a little
further and encountered a very large octopus that was halfway
out of the crevasse. I swam in close and began petting my new
friend on the head (mantle) and stroking his tentacles. I had
learned that on the male octopus, one tentacle will not have
suction cups near the end. As I petted the big guy, I was able
to move all of his large tentacles out of the hole and set him
gently on a rock. After a few minutes, I gave hand signals to my
dive buddy that we needed to find some crab to feed our friend.
We left, swam around gathering a few crab and then returned. My
friend was still on the rock where I had left him, and we were
able to feed him a nice snack.
As my friend was enjoying his snack, I moved in close with my
face mask just an inch or so from his eyes. I watched him open
and close his eyes as I stroked his mantle. After a few precious
moments, he stretched out a large tentacle and gently patted me
on the head. I had tears in my eyes and was sad that I was
running low on air and had to leave. That's my extremely close
encounter with a very large male octopus.
I am very blessed to have such good friends in my underwater
world.

Re: Ch ch ch changes
One of the things that makes Richland great is the unity of
memory... not that we have "group think" but that so many of
our memories are shared by others... whenever I have a member
of this Richland family to celebrate I go back to 2nd grade and
move forward... Oh sure I got memories before 2nd grade but we
really start noticing stuff around then... before that I had a
much smaller world, which extended from 1309 Haines across GWWay
on Saturdays to the Spudnut for my Folks... and on a couple of
occasions walking trips with my dog, Pepper, to the park via the
dike... BUT, I always enjoy the more Senior Bombers and Bomber
babes memories which occurred before some of my focal points even
existed... the Dike for one... The Uptown was such a huge memory
and gathering place for so many of us upstarts, but then again,
it wasn't always there for the guys to drive one direction and
the Babes to walk the other... Just as today, the Rose Bowl
isn't there to greet visitors to our fair town, many of the old
Parking spots are gone forever... ah, but we all have a thread
of hometownishness regardless of when we occupied the turf. For
me it was Zip's but for others it was other burger places...
for me, crossing the "new" bridge (no not the newest one) meant
there was a good chance my Pop would stop and I'd get an ice
cream cone... Going to the Purina store to pick of 50 cents
worth of pellets fer my rabbit... and on and on... for me, we
seldom went to the Downtown except at Christmas or if my mom
wanted something from there... For years I thought I had
imagined the upstairs in Thrifty Drug... it looks so short! But
it was there that a bunch of us were checking out Santa and as
Butch MANTHEI ('65) stuck his face in Officer Stout's face...
Santa woke and Butch jumped yelling "Santa's a Cop!" Santa then
looked at me and said "It never rains but it pours Rivers!"

Re: RVs on U.S. 101
Gotta speak up in defense after the "rants" about RVs on
Highway 101. I admit that some RVers are a "pain in the neck",
but I truly think they are a minority overall. I've been
dragging trailers all over the U.S. and Canada since 1981 or
so, and have "done" U.S. 101 perhaps 25 times - maybe more -
from Washington's Olympic Peninsula all the way to southern
California and vice versa I've always tried to be thoughtful
and courteous, and find ways to not impede traffic etc. - but
I've endured frequent impatient, discourteous and DANGEROUS
behavior on the part of other folks - in cars, pickups, log
trucks, commercial vehicles, 18 wheelers. Even when I am at or
above the posted speed limit there are drivers out there who
still exhibit hostility. It is also apparent to me that the
highways are a whole lot less friendly place to be in recent
years, compared to 15-20 years ago, with increasing numbers of
self-centered, belligerent, impatient, overtly demonstrative
and often inattentive drivers. Another symptom of problems in
our society???? From my point of view, I and my RV have every
bit of right and privilege to use the public roads and byways
as anyone else, even in my long-bed 4-door diesel 3500 pickup
truck and 38' 5th wheel (combined gross weight somewhere
around 13 tons, I guess.) I pays my taxes, got my rights,
methinks!!!!

I worked five years for the AZ Office of Child Care Licensing,
part of the Dept. of Health, which was located near the state
capitol. Because our child care center and group home
inspectors sometimes had to go into poor neighborhoods, every
year the Capitol Police gave a presentation on personal
safety. We were always told not to give to panhandlers - most
were alcoholics or drug addicts. I seldom had anything to
give anyway, but if I had a dollar I'd give it to someone who
asked. Even if they didn't use it for something good, at least
I wanted the person to know someone cared about him/her. Often
the person would respond, "God bless you." I didn't know how
sincere the person was, but the words reminded me that God has
blessed me throughout my life. One example:
My wife and I were renting a small bungalow in Kaneohe,
Hawaii, when our son was born in 1970. My life insurance agent
told me if I was thinking of buying a house I should do it
soon, as interest rates were going up. Buying a house had
never crossed my mind. My wife wasn't working to take care of
our baby, something almost unheard of where the high cost of
living frequently requires two incomes. I decided we should
look anyway, just to get experience for the time we might be
financially able to buy. All the houses were going for $40,000
or more, but I saw an open house ad for $33,000. We went to
look at it. The grass in the yard was waist high. The front
and back porches were rotted from the Kaneohe rain. An agent
was showing another couple around and asking all kinds of
financial questions.
The agent who showed us around asked what I did - I taught
public school, and the pay wasn't great - and what my wife did
- she stayed at home. That was the last question he asked, so
I figured he wrote us off as not financially qualified. But he
did ask if we wanted to make an offer. I didn't know how, so
he suggested I offer $32,000. He called the next day to say
the seller accepted our offer. We needed 20% down. I borrowed
$4000 on my life insurance policy, got a $1000 loan from my
dad, and my wife's parents gave us a $1000. Ten years later
we sold the house for $137,000 and bought a better house for
$172,000. We sold it 15 years later for $650,000 when we
decided to move to Arizona. I had to split the money into
three bank accounts because the FDiC only insures up to
$250,000. We bought a new car, the first my wife ever got in
45 years of marriage, paid cash for our Mesa house, and got
all new furniture. After 30 years, I paid off the $4000 life
insurance loan! The rest is in an investment account.
That's only part of the blessings I've received over the
years. It's such a small thing to give a dollar to someone
unfortunate, but to hear "God bless you" and remember again
that He has is worth it.

I loved your entry today about the octopus. I watched the
amazing video, also.
When my kids were small we were stationed in Bremerton and
would often drive down to Pt. Defiance aquarium. One day an
attendant told us we could go upstairs and look down into the
tank.
Up there were several small open aquariums where animals were
confined for various reasons. One time an octopus was crawling
on the inside of the enclosure slightly above the water line.
My daughter was fascinated and stayed mesmerized watching it.
Suddenly, it oozed up over the side and made it to the floor
in front of us. It moved about as interested in us as we were
in it. The kids were as fascinated as it appeared to be also.
As an attendant came into the area it hastily crawled up and
back into its tank, rather like a baby getting caught climbing
out of its crib.
We always had to check out the upstairs tanks whenever we
visited, but never experienced that again.

Hi Maren,
I see that "contributors" have stepped up quite a bit, since
the "Mike Clowes" missive exhorting us all speak up. Since I
promised that I would, here's the best I can come up with, in
my accident prone condition.
I took a flying, full backside dive onto the concrete garage
floor 3 days ago. Me and the floor covered with blood; never
seen so much. EMTs to the ER. CT Scan: just a mild concussion.
But, with big gash on back side of head where it hit. Closed
up with a dozen staples (Ouch, Ouch, Ouch... .) Home at 3am to
be cleaned up.
So the back story: Our Cat, Jessie, is INDOOR ONLY, but
constantly determined to get out. So then I'm out in the
garage, with its' exterior door open. I finish doing whatever
there, and I head to the side door back into the House. When I
crack open said door, Jessie- waiting like a coiled spring
inside - breaks out like a bullet and out into the great
beyond. My instant mental reaction in the first microsecond of
the breakout: "OMG I'll be blamed for this!!!" Thus I launch
myself in a vain dive to stop her.
Result as above. (Merry has since confirmed: "Yes, it's your
fault.") Anyhow, Merry followed me to the ER, leaving the
garage door up a foot or so, just in case the cat was smart
enough to remember where she gets fed. (When arrive back from
the ER, there's Jessie waiting for us to let her back in.) So,
just another "hit" to my already almost zero physical balance.
Which I'll take in stride. I'm confident I'll be over the
concussion effects by September. We're all signed up to come
over for the Club 40 annual, and we'll be there; me on my
walker, maneuvering table to table, trying to recognize
anybody. (So, BIG lettering on you name tags, OK? Lost Memory
is part of the problem; but I also finally gained enough
"self-knowledge" in late adulthood to see that I was a pretty
self-absorbed kid back then; and I thus plead for a "break"
trying to remember.) [happy face] I look forward to seeing y'all.
And THANKS, Maren!

Guess the moral of the tale is don't give 'til it hurts, but
donate to some group who may or may not spend most of your
money on doing good instead of on themselves. And, if you are
driving the 101 through Oregon, have consideration for others
on the road. You never know who may be packing a gun.
On a more joyous note; there are two Bombers celebrating a

I make up kits to hand out; they cost me about $10, as I get
most from the Dollar Tree. Some comes from trial sizes at Wal-

Lotion, Razors, Shampoo/Conditioner, Tooth Brush/Tooth Paste.
Instead of giving money, I give the bags. If they are really

cost me around $10. Not a huge loss.

Now if my dear departed Mother was to author this post, she
would add an m and a Y to this Bomber's first name... that's
how she always spoke of him and she spoke of him often as well
as his sis ('55-RIP) who just happened to be my first baby-

little young, but I am proud to say I have one of his very
early miniature Richland Bombs sitting behind me on a shelf...
with it is much other Bomber memorabilia, including a hat
Peter Joe CARROLL ('65) gave me years ago, another hat Steve
HAGGARD ('65) gave me this summer, Bottled water from Y2K and
a little blonde furry guy that a Bomber-babe from '63 does not
allow me to mention on pain of being thrown into the Columbia
River during the dead of winter... I mean this lovely lady
goes absolutely bananas at the mention of this cute, soft,
warm furry, little creature... now I guess it's not really
blonde, but it is furry and snugly... very snugly... She even
has one of her own which she leaves at her best friend's house
in Olympia... one would think she would want me to speak of it
often... but nooooooooo... I am forbidden... so, since I
cannot say the word Beaver, unless I am speaking of Carl BEYER

Re: houses
Wish I could say we shared David DOUGLAS' ('62) good fortune
with houses. I'm pleased to hear he and his family did so
well, and things went their way. But in real estate, timing
is everything. We did have a small amount of good fortune with
our first home purchase. Back in the late '80s we bought a
nice condo in Arroyo Grande, California. We kept it three
years, then sold it for a tidy profit of $43,000. We thought
we were in tall clover. But in the subsequent months after
our move back to Washington, I couldn't find a job that paid
enough to qualify for a mortgage, and the money got eaten up
by living expenses and the IRS taking the rest in penalty
because we hadn't re-invested it in a new home. Back to square
one. Back in California in 2000, around 2003 we bought an 1100
square foot cracker box beside the freeway for $389,000. Never
should have been given the loan in the first place, but no
lender or real estate agent had the guts to tell us. It was
way too big of a loan, which soon became evident. At the time,
I was passionate about having an address that didn't have an
apartment number after it. Well, two years into the mortgage,
payment on the first became due. The mortgage was going to
take my entire pay check. Desperate to avoid that, we re-
financed to the tune of $410,000. There went our equity.
Again, never should have been given a loan, but we were part
of the Bank of America-Capital Mortgage loan scandal. Our
original plan had been to sell the house for a big profit at
retirement and move back to the Northwest. The ink was barely
dry on the re-fi when the housing market collapsed, and we
found ourselves over $200,000 underwater. We did a short sale,
licked our wounds again, and moved back to Washington for a
while. But for some reason I still don't understand, I didn't
use my VA loan to purchase that disaster, and so today as we
hunt for a house once more, I still have it. Funny how things
seem connected over the years.

Re: Sandstorm entries
Now we all make an occasional mistake in either writing or
conversation (Look at Mr. GOP, David RIVERS ('65) for a prime
example!) but I have to correct you, Sir, about your post
(7/30 Sandstorm) saying it was posted by "Mike CLOWES ('54)"
concerning the number of contributors to the Sandstorm! I
know I'm may be infringing a bit into Bomber territory, but we
(Marsha GOSLIN Brehm ('65) and I) do live in Richland now - or
as I refer to it "West Kennewick" - and I did attend John
Ball Elementary for three years!
When there seemed to be several days that it was almost a NOT
issue saved only by Maren's post indicating how many days are
left to the start of the 2019 Iditarod and who was signed up
to mush through the snow of Alaska I couldn't help but give
everyone a little reason to write.
I posted the fact that we were not getting very many entries
because both Marsha ('65) and myself have enjoyed reading the
daily issue of the Sandstorm with our morning coffee since we
got our first computer in August of 1998!! When we get to
the point an "old Lion" has to remind Bombers to send in
contributions to our very unique online newspaper, it is not
good. As I said before, being summer probably is a factor
in the low volume of contributors, but it only takes a few
minutes to write about your accident falling in the garage and
your cat, Jessie's, escapades. I wanted to point out to all
Bomber (young & older) we need the Sandstorm to be a viable
daily addition to our morning coffee! Also, we all need to
thank Maren for her hard work in keeping this going for the
past nearly 20 years! Incredible!!! While I'm mentioning
Maren, don't forget everyone, to send her your yearly payment
or dues so we can have our Sandstorm each day. If you need the
snail mail address, email me and I'll send it to you.
Thanks everyone and Alan, Marsha ('65) and I hope you're
feeling better and Jessie is safe and sound at home with you
and Merry.

Hi Maren,
This last month I had the opportunity to spend a bit of time
in my place in Northern Idaho. One of my good friends, Diane,
came with me. She is a fan of all things from Bomber Land. As
we were out on Lake Pend Oreille, I complimented her on her
Bomber tee shirt and Bomber hat. To which she replied, "who
drew this logo? I just love it." I realized I had no clue who
drew the R with the mushroom cloud. Who did?
[Maybe somebody will own up to it. I THINK it was drawn
by somebody from class of '65, but I wouldn't bet any
money on that cuz I could be wrong... especially since
I don't know WHO. Can't tell you when the R/mushroom
cloud became our registered trademark either, but
somebody knows. -Maren]
Diane grew up in Pacific Grove, CA, graduated in '67, and was
a cheerleader for the PG Breakers. She has said that the cheer
"We are the Breakers, the mighty mighty Breakers," did not in
any way have the impact of "We are the Bombers, the mighty
mighty Bomers." Of course, they did not have teams like we did
either. She said no one ever wanted to know who they were.

memories flood in every time I read one of these names... the
other day, I was doing some work on a car and at the end of
the day I was totally exhausted... it got me thinking of
summers in Richland, when we were still young enough not to
have "full time" jobs. Talk about care-free. Well over 100
degrees and we'd be out doors from sun up till the street
lights went on. Heat was no problem and I don't recall much
air conditioning any where... now there may have been in the
stores but I sure don't recall it. After I left Richland I
thought Air Conditioning was the bane of the world... all I
did was freeze and sneeze... but inna olden dayz it was no
problem... the Rivers, the flume, the Swimming pools (big and
little), no pool? No problem always the good ol sprinkler...
I have no idea the last time I saw kids running through
sprinklers... knocking on stranger's doors after a long day
"across the tracks" and asking for a glass of water... these
days, there would be no room for real crimamals in the jails
as all our parents would be locked up for child abuse...
spankings, all day without adult supervision (though for
some of us, as Jimmy HEIDLEBAUGH ('65) always says adult
supervision is a license for trouble!)... Our lives are tied
together by just the greatest town known to man... HAPPY
BIRTHDAY, Marilyn STEWART ('62), Tommy HEMPHILL ('62),
Jim OTT ('64), and Mike JENNINGS ('64-RIP) on your special 1
day, July 31, 2018!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Thanks, Maren
I'm pretty sure I do need to send in my subscription dues, but
don't have the address where I should send it. Gary BREHM ('64
Lion) reminded me to do so in his post today. So, when you
have a minute, please can you resend your address to me?
And a big thank you for continuing to do this, even when you
were on vacation! WOW.
Take care,
-Diane MURPHY ('65)

Re: Check out that charity
You can easily check out the validity of a charity online at
Charity Navigator.
https://www.charitynavigator.org/
I only donate to those with 3 or 4 stars. There ARE beneficial
organizations, such as Richland's own SIGN headed by Dr.
Zirkle https://signfracturecare.org/
[Wonder if Dr. Zirkle is related to Aliy Zirkle -- of
Iditarod fame. She could win this year... has placed
2nd more than once. -Maren]
