Re: Looking for: Coral SAND ('61)
Does anyone know where Coral SAND ('61) might be? A few of us
are coming to Richland and one of our group would like to see
or find out where she may be. If you know her or can look in
class of '61, please let me know so I can see if she wants to
see us. I sent a note to Maren to see if she knows. My friend

Re: "Court of Dreams" Dedication: Saturday, Sept. 8th at 4PM
My wife and I get the privilege of transporting the guest of
honor, Jim HOUSE ('63) to the festivities. I can now say our
Breakfast Group includes the guy who paid for the Courts below
RHS and the guy who paid for the Horse Sculptures above the
Columbia River near Vantage. Good company, considering our
menu choice is usually an Egg McMuffin and a Sr. coffee ($4.35
with tax). Also, I'm anxious to see C.W. BROWN ('58) shoot the
first baskets. I always heard that he could dunk a basketball
and I'm wondering if he will dunk or just shoot regular shots.
At the end of speeches, two of the courts will be open for
shooting. My Senior Basketball buddy Dennis NALDER ('65) and I
will be open to a pickup game. He will be the white-haired guy
knocking down 3-pointers, and I will be the gray-haired guy
with the Chief Jo Warriors T-shirt (my tribute to Toivo
Piippo). If the courts aren't too crowded, I only have two
conditions: I refuse to play against anyone who is under the
age of 70 and I refuse to play against anyone who is named
Phil NEILL ('66). Actually, instead of a pickup game, let's
just shoot some hoops!

The episode airs in September, according to local
radio stations.
Stacy Lee Riley from 98.3 The Key and Raleigh
from Hot 97.5 will appear on the Jamie Foxx-

Shazam, the application that identifies music.
Raleigh's radio show is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Riley
is on the air for her morning show with Rik
Mikals. She also serves as a DJ on Tri-Cities New
Country 1027 KORD from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Re: Brad WEAR ('71)
Wow...Memories
I can still remember the dove season that we used to sharpen
up our shooting accuracy for the annual fall pastime. The
best results we had was walking the railroad behind Bager
Mtn. It is probably all houses and farms now. The only
problem with doves was the size, you had to get the limit of
ten to have enough to make a meal for two.
While I enjoyed duck and goose hunting most, I was not above
going after pheasant, quail and the elusive chukar.
My shotgun is a Remington 870 pump with 32 inch full choke
barrel. It held a close pattern a good range. I had to use
number 8 shot for upland birds and let them get out a bit or
all I got from the tight pattern was a puff of feathers and
shredded bird.
But it was incredible for waterfowl with size 5 shot for
ducks and 2's for geese. We hunted ducks in the McNary game
range area from a blind. Both Chuck McELROY ('60) and I did
exceptionally well on ducks and geese and in mid day managed
to get a fair number of pheasant. I also hunted pheasant with
my Dad. Corn fields and canyons in the "Rosa" areas.
I can say without bragging that I was an above average hunter
and always brought home birds to clean. We had freezer full
of birds. Mom always soaked the pheasants over night in
dilute milk, and fried them like chicken. I can still
remember my oldest daughter, Debby ,asking if we could have
turkey for Thanksgiving and Christmas like normal people?
I always fixed roast goose. The girls liked it ok but I
switched to turkey for one or the other.
Vince FITZPATRICK ('57) and I hunted deer in the blues and
over near Goldendale, WA. We always got at least one and
would share the meat. I shot an elk one year but found I did
not care for the taste. So I stuck with deer. One year they
had a special moose hunt in a small area North of Calgary in
Canada. 3 of us drew tags at $50 each. We all got a moose
and I put over 700 pounds of meat in the freezers. I had the
butcher shop process most of it into sausage and mooseburger.
My girls liked the sausage best of all. It was very tasty.
But, at my age and with my well worn knees I have not hunted
for years. Especially with my metal knee rough country
walking is not much fun. But I do enjoy shooting my 357 Sig
pistol. I was able to buy the exact same gun all members of
the Secret Service carry. I have put over 2500 rounds through
it. I just installed a new barrel. I am a member of
Washington Arms Collectors and am able to get a big discount
on 500 round cases of full metal jacket. When I am carrying
it I load the same hollow points that Law Enforcement uses. I
have 15 magazines for it and the night before I go to the
range I pre-load them all and it saves time in reloading.
In anticipation of questions... yes I know several agents of
the Secret Service in both the training and bomb squad
divisions. I have more then once spent a week at the 500
acre training center near Beltsville, MD. My time is part
classroom lecture and part field demos. I did a car for them
a few years back. It was nasty and scary. They also use a
couple of other instructor types I have recommended. The
Service has nearly 3000 members and the training division
has a tough job keeping them all sharp and up to date.
Note.... for any duck hunters I still have about 20 high
quality duck decoys in excellent condition. Mixed hens and
drakes, Mallards. They are the plasti-duck type that float
well in choppy water. Most have weights with strings still on
them. I won't give them away but would sell them at a very
fair price. I would throw in a high quality duck call. Drop
me a line and I will send my phone number if you are
interested.
This last year the Bomber teams turned in a great year. It
was a pleasure watching them on TV and listening to some
games on the radio.
Here's wishing them well for the coming year.

It's good to hear from you.
I sincerely did not mean to disparage the WSU part of you by
rooting for the Huskies the other day. I just wasn't aware
that WSU was truly fielding a team this year.
On a related note I still maintain that you could have been a
fairly decent athlete if you had taken the time to let me

have you. HA!

As to whether C.W. Brown, at 5'9" could dunk the ball, try
this....
Once upon a time the local Phillips 76ers with both Browns on
board took on the traveling Harlem Stars (farm club to the
Harlem Globetrotters). This was in the old Col-Hi gym, and I
think in 1962 or so. Jumping at the opening tip-off was C.W.
(!!!) alongside what was then a very tall Star, standing
6'8"..
Comical to see them standing there together, the tallest and
the shortest two players on the floor. Up goes the ball...
and C.W. launched himself as if from a trampoline -- and got
the tip! Stunned silence from the chatty Stars as one of the
76ers finished off with a lay-in. Thus, a great game was
underway.
Norris did his magic as well. I still see him coming down
left of the basket and near the end-line with a nasty rebound
and firing the ball baseball-style and full court --- or so
it was made to look. Every player on both teams sprinted down
court to keep up with the ball.. but then there was Norris
still under the original basket, with a big grin... then
dribble, dribble, as saunter toward the center stripe totally
alone and unmolested. By invitation he later joined the Stars
on tour, but the constantly chatty style was not his own, and
my recollection is that he went his own way after a year.
And, oh yeah, Go Huskies! [and GEAUX TIGERS!]

Re: Going back ... in my mind
To: Mi Amigo, Bradley WEAR ('71), other hunters and
outdoors enthusiasts
Like you, I celebrated the coming of my favorite season of
the year ... hunting. I don't get out much anymore with
looking after the love of my life, Ms Jeanne. But, yesterday
(Sept 1), I fixed her a breakfast that she could have at her
leisure, and I took the day off for a run to the Tucannon
River. Getting an early start, I drove well up Panjab Creek
to look for Ruffed grouse at my longtime "honeyhole," only to
find it choked with a large group of campers. Only then, did
I recall that it was a Saturday and Labor Day weekend, to
boot. As an old retired fart, where like the Marine Corps,
every day is a holiday and every meal is a picnic (or should
be ... theoretically), I had not anticipated having to share
my beloved longtime stomping grounds with a population of
modern milenials. OK, "S**t Happens!"
I went to another spot and trudged gun in hand stumbling thru
fallen trees overgrown with thick, tall grass that was never
there, yesteryear. A couple of hours later, cooling my sweaty
old carcass in my folding chair as I dined with a sandwich
and a cup of coffee (seasoned with a wee bit of bourbon) from
the tailgate of Rowdy Ricky II, my 1990 Ford Ranger that has
aged about as well, as me, I relaxed in the cool mountain air
wafting up the canyon and reflected.
"Things have really changed in the 70 or so years that I have
been prowling this canyon, from vehicle miring mudbogs to
today's paved roads, from really rough it camping to concrete
picnic tables, mobile tin teepees and pit toilets. But then
as I tipped my sweaty cap back and helped myself to a final
snort of bourbon, I admitted to myself, so have I changed."
Next, I drove to the gun range to shoot my pistol, only to
find that it was closed due to fire danger. Now, let me get
this straight, it's ok to fire a gun, hunting, but unsafe to
shoot at a target... ok...
Well, running out of viable options, what's an old retired
fish biologist supposed to do at a time like this? I know ...
I'll go fishing.
Well, the last time they had stocked the ponds was June 2nd.
Hmmmm, wonder if there are any finny creatures still lurking
in those waters now? So, I rigged my fly rod and began my
impersonation of Isaac Walton ... until my reel broke. Crap!
What sort of a day is this? A day like all days in the life
and times of Pappy Swan that may alter but not necessarily
illuminate his times...
But, I had one more trick in my book of solving foibles. I
rigged my trail rod/spinning reel with a fly on a 12 foot
leader cast out and reeled it so slowly that I dozed off
snoring, twice But, that did the trick and I took two nice
fat hold over trout, enough for my breakfast this morning
since my wife doesn't care for trout.
Homeward bound, driving into the setting sun, I "mumbled in
my mind." Maybe, it's true, we can never really go home ...
again. Change is imminent, things change, places change,
others change, we change, and obviously, the world changes.
Perhaps the best we can really hope for is a revisitation in
our minds of how it was, back then.

HE WAS A COACHING LEGEND IN THE TRI-CITIES. HE'LL
BE MISSED BY MANY.
By Annie Fowler
September 01, 2018 12:48 PM
Richland, WA
"Among some of Leon RICE'S ('82) prized
possessions is a collection of bar coasters from
a former Richland watering hole. On the back are
plays drawn up by former Richland High School
basketball coach Frank Teverbaugh.
Now the head coach of the Boise State basketball
team, RICE (, 82) has yet to implement any of
those plays. But he fondly remembers Teverbaugh
taking the time to educate him on the game.
'I wish I had them all,' said RICE, a 1982
Richland graduate. 'The great part was how he
delivered it. We would go to the Gaslight and if
I bought a few beers, he would talk basketball
with me all night. Pints were $1.25 back then,
but it would cost me more than $5.'
Teverbaugh, 85, died Tuesday. He leaves behind a
legacy that will not soon be forgotten.
Teverbaugh story.jpg
A Richland reunion in November 2016, saw Dick
CARTMELL ('73), left, officiate a game between
Leon RICE 'S ('82) (second from left) Boise State
team and Northwest Christian, where RICE 'S ('82)
son Brock played. Second from the right is former
Richland basketball coach Frank Teverbaugh.
Courtesy of Leon RICE.
'We coached freshman football together for 17
years,' said former Richland baseball coach Ben
JACOBS ('69). 'He coached the defense and I
coached the offense. We had some great teams.
Frank taught me a lot about coaching, being
around athletes and getting the best out of them.
He was the real deal.
'He was the best X, s and O, s guy I have ever been
around.'
A LEGEND IN THE MAKING
Before he became an icon at Richland, Teverbaugh
put Reardan High School on the map, winning two
Class B state basketball titles and two more in
football.
Teverbaugh, s basketball program was 165-29 in
eight years, including a 57-game winning streak
through two undefeated seasons and state titles
in 1966-67.
Teverbaugh arrived in Richland in 1970, taking
over a successful basketball program from the
popular and successful Art Dawald, whose name
adorns the school, s gym.
In his time with the Bombers, Teverbaugh posted a
155-23 record with a state title in 1972. That
championship team went 23-2.
Among some of Teverbaugh, s top players was a 6-
foot-4 post player named Roger SONDERLAND ('77).
'I played for him for three years,' said
SONDERLAND ('77), who won more than 400 games in
30-plus seasons coaching at River View High
School.
'We took second in 1977. That was his final game
for the Bombers. He was old school. He would get
on you - especially me.'
'Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of
Frank Teverbaugh, a member of the Boise State
Athletics Hall of Fame who passed away earlier
this week., #BleedBlue pic.twitter.com/QUNJo9KZU3
- Boise State Broncos August 31, 2018
Over 15 years between Reardan and Richland,
Teverbaugh posted a 320-52 record. He still has
the highest winning percentage in Washington high
school basketball at 86 percent.
After Richland, Teverbaugh coached at Columbia
Basin College, leading the Hawks to an NWAC title
in 1981.
Teverbaugh is the only coach in the state, s
history to have won titles at three different
levels: Class B, Class 3A and college (NWAC).
IT STARTS WITH THE FRESHMEN
One year, Teverbaugh and JACOBS ('69) took a team
that had won one game the year before at
Carmichael Middle School, and turned them into a
powerhouse.
'Back in the old Big Nine, there were no
patsies,' JACOBS ('69) said. 'Even at the
freshman level. Everything had a reason in
practice - that transcends to the game. Richland,
for the most part, you get good talent.'
Teverbaugh and JACOBS ('69) put together a
perfect season in 1978. They went undefeated and
outscored opponents 195-0.
'Frank could flat out coach,' JACOBS ('69) said.
RICE (, 82) was on that 1978 freshman team. In a
game against Walla Walla, JACOBS ('69) sent him
onto the field and told him to run the ball. RICE
(, 82) unleashed a long touchdown pass instead. As
you can imagine, he got an earful on the
sidelines from his coach.
'We were only up 38-0,' RICE (, 82) chuckled. 'I
didn't believe the lead was safe. I read the
blitz and a threw a long pass.'
By the time RICE (, 82) was ready for varsity
basketball, Teverbaugh was gone. He instead
played for Phil NEILL ('66).
LIFE LESSONS
RICE (, 82) kept his friendship with Teverbaugh
through the years. He would show up at Gonzaga,
where RICE (, 82) was an assistant for Mark Few,
and again at Boise State.
'I just loved him and I learned so much from
him,' RICE (, 82) said. 'When I was at Gonzaga, he
sat and watched film with me for an entire day.
When Frank said something, I listened. He can
coach any sport.
'He is one of the best coaches I have been
around.'
In 2016, Teverbaugh showed up at Boise State to
watch a game between the Broncos and Northwest
Christian, where RICE 'S ('82) son Brock played.
The Richland connection was strengthened with
Dick CARTMELL ('73) officiating the game. BSU won
91-76.
'That was the last time I saw Frank,' RICE said.
'He leaves such a legacy with Bomber basketball.
I never got to play for him, but I took so much
away from his mentorship. I always valued his
opinion.'
SONDERLAND ('77) last saw Teverbaugh in February
when they went to watch Richland play Davis in a
state playoff game. It was an 86-61 win by the
Bombers.
'He loved sports,' SONDERLAND ('77) said. 'He
meant a lot to the Richland community.'
THE EARLY YEARS
After graduating from Mountain Home High School
in Idaho, Teverbaugh went to Boise Junior College
(now Boise State). He was a rare four-sport
athlete in college, lettering in football,
basketball, baseball and track from 1951-53.
In 1952, Teverbaugh caught three touchdown passes
in a football game against Weber State. He also
was a forward on the basketball team and played
in the outfield for the baseball team.
He went to the University of Idaho in 1954 to
play football. He caught the only touchdown in a
10-0 upset win over Washington State. It was the
first time the Vandals had beaten the Cougars in
29 years. Hall of Famer Jerry Kramer was a
freshman on the 1954 team.
Teverbaugh was inducted into the Boise State Hall
of Fame in 1988. The Central Washington Sports
Hall of Fame came calling in 2005.
He also is in the Washington Interscholastic
Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame
(1992), and the Richland High School Hall of
Fame."

RICHLAND NATIVE HOPES TO COMPETE AGAINST WORLD'S
BEST. IT'S ALL ROUTINE FOR HIM.
By Rachel Fradette

Richland, WA
"Nate HIGGINS ('04) makes his way through Kia Ora
Fitness without missing a beat.
Moving from one exercise machine to the next, he
starts pumping out reps with a 65-pound dumbbell
in each hand. And then, well, a lot more.
He greets others at the gym - friends - who show
up after him. But once he starts lifting, he
doesn't take a break until he's done, not even
for an interview.
This is his routine, six days a week, and
consistency is everything. For someone who plans
to compete in the Paralympic Trials yet again, it
has to be.
'It's a huge honor,' HIGGINS ('04) said. 'I'm
really looking forward to going back.'
Nate Higgins Paralympic tri
Richland's Nate HIGGINS ('04) is trying to
qualify for the Paralympic Games. Watch a video
at: tricityherald.com/video
Bob Brawdy Tri-City Herald
Those who know him best are confident he'll make
it.
'I have no doubt whatever he sets his mind to,
he'll get there,' said Jennifer Tonkyn, a swim
instructor at Columbia Basin Racquet Club.
And there's four-time Olympic gold-medal swimmer
John Naber: 'I can't imagine that he'll be denied
a spot on this team. He does not expect it to
come easily.'
HIGGINS ('04), who was paralyzed in an accident
on a painting job in 2004, made his first trip to
the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs,
Colo., in 2011. He had hoped to qualifying for
the 2012 Games in London as a swimmer, but he
didn't have his best performance.
Seven years of hard work and rehabilitation -
plus competing in a new event, the shot put -
have the 33-year-old Richland native taking aim
at the 2020 Games in Tokyo.
HIGGINS ('04) said that with making his second
trip to the trials, he will know a lot more of
what to expect.
'I said, 'I'll keep hitting the weights and see
how this goes,' he said.
HIGGINS ('04) said he has had to overcome several
health and mental challenges this year, relying
on the support of his parents and his self-
determination to meet the challenges.
'You're going to continue to get into the gym,'
he said. 'No matter how depressed you are, how
(crappy) you feel, you're going to get in there.'
Nate Higgins trial workout
Paralympian hopeful Nate HIGGINS ('04) recently
works out as part of his preparation for
traveling to the Olympic Training Center in
Colorado Springs. It's the second time for him
attempting to make the team. The first time was
for swimming and this time is for the shot put
event.
Bob Brawdy Tri-City Herald
That mentality is something HIGGINS ('04) is
known for, just ask his coaches.
'I'll never forget the day we got him in the
water,' Tonkyn said. 'I never could challenge him
enough.'
They first met in 2005, right after HIGGINS'
('04) Higgins' fall. Tonkyn said he was searching
for something then, and he eventually found it.
He credits her with helping him make it to the
trials; she says he's a coach's dream.
Tonkyn said one way to describe how amazing
HIGGINS ('04) is: He completed the Alcatraz swim
not once, but twice. The 1 1/2-mile swim in the
San Francisco bay is notorious for rough and cold
water.
Somehow, HIGGINS ('04) finds a way to succeed. He
says it's because he doesn't want regrets.
'What's the risk if I don't do this,' HIGGINS
('04) said. 'There are no 'what ifs.'
HIGGINS ('04) was awarded a "Swim with Mike"
scholarship for athletes with physical
challenges. The scholarship paid for his Master
of Business Administration at the University of
Southern California. HIGGINS ('04) raved about
how USC made him want to be "the best."
Now, he sits on the scholarship's board. HIGGINS
('04) has been raising money for years to pay
back his scholarship.
'We put him on the board because he sets an
example,' said Ron Orr, associate athletic
director at USC and Swim With Mike executive
director.
These days, HIGGINS ('04) mentors the next 'Swim
with Mike' generation. But the organization also
gave him a chance to meet one of his greatest
mentors in Naber.
Naber and HIGGINS ('04) frequently worked out
together at USC. The pair still talk once every
couple months.
Naber said now he's less of HIGGINS' ('04) mentor
and more of a cheerleader because of his growth.
'It seems like everything he tries, it's pretty
likely he'll be successful,' Naber said. 'I'm
pretty confident he'll make it to Tokyo.'
HIGGINS ('04) heads to the U.S. Paralympics
Development Camp in Colorado Springs at the end
of the month. He's ready to go for it.
'I can't guarantee I'll make the team in 2020,'
HIGGINS ('04) said. 'I can't guarantee that I'll
win a gold medal. What I can tell you is that I
plan on being more consistent than anybody else.'

Re: Hunting
I love hunting, and I know Pappy does too. He's a great
hunting partner, along with Tom MATTIS ('66). We've hunted
elk, deer, ducks, geese, pheasant, quail, chukar, turkey, and
grouse together many times. They're someone I trust to be in
the field with anytime. One of my favorite hunts with Pappy
was a muzzle loader elk hunt around Bumping Lake. I think it
involved a gallon of Makers Mark, and a gallon of Knob Creek
over a very short period of time. Of course there's the time
we took Maggie, Bela, and Kate hunting too. Relax, they were
our dogs, all RIP now unfortunately. All in all, some of my
best memories are hunting trips with Pappy, Tom MATTIS ('66),
Larry CROUCH ('71), Robin FRENCH ('71), Rick Morrell ('71),
John Mosley ('71). Bickelton, Tucannon, Bumping Lake, Badger
Canyon, Stevens Cty. all carry life long memories.
The opener for dove in Texas was a disappointment for me.
Only three for six shots. I did however win a raffle drawing
for a shotgun that I subsequently gave to twin 14 year old
girl hunters so they did not have to share a shotgun. The
ironic thing was that evening I had three dove fly into my
sliding glass door and commit dovicide. Go figure.

The days seem to be dwindling down. This week end Club 40
has its annual meeting and a good time will be had by all.
Next weekend marks another Oktoberfest celebration here in
Mount Angel (or Engelberg if you prefer the German).
Not only all of that, but there is also a Bomber birthday
to celebrate today. I would even go so far as to presume he
graduated from the hallowed halls of dear old Col-Hi at the
same time I did. I think his name appears in the list of
graduates provided to attendees of the celebration, but it
also shows up in the class will and also in the prophecy (two
separate articles that appeared in the Sandstorm that was
published at the end of the school year).
So, a tip of the ol' propeller beanie and a "Happy Birthday!"
to fellow classmate Carl VOLMER ('54). Keeping it cool is a
good rule.

is the Dedication of the Basketball "Court of Dreams" that our
Classmate Jim HOUSE paid $50,000 to renovate below the High
School.
Everyone is welcome to join in the fun! Saturday the 8th at 4pm
Lots of Bombers from every class will be in attendance,
including the City of Richland's ProTem Mayor Terry CHRISTENSEN

CW BROWN (58), a member of the Basketball Team who won State in
1958 will be the 1st person to shoot a Basket at the "Court of
Dreams". Some of his teammates will be there also.
Some of you might not know that Jim HOUSE is battling
parkinson's disease. He will be speaking, and will be
accompanied to the mike by Ellen WEIHERMILLER Anderson (Cheer
Queen from the Class of '63) and Kippy BRINKMAN Scott (Cheer
Queen from the Class of '62, and a former Miss Tri-Cities and
Miss Seattle and also Miss Washington in 1965).
After the Ceremony the Richland Team 2018/2019, (Boys and
Girls) will play a team pick up game on one court, and the
other court is open to everyone. Bring your basketballs and
join in the fun.
There is a softball tournament going on Saturday, so you may
want to park in the bomber bowl parking lot, or the baseball/
football lot and walk to the dedication.. I doubt if you can
park in the area behind the old Tastee Freeze.

Re: Noah BAKKER ('18)
HERE'S YOUR CHANCE TO HELP OUT AN INJURED
RICHLAND TEEN. AND GET A CLEAN CAR.
By Rachel Fradette
September 07, 2018 12:51 PM
Richland, WA
"Two rods and 10 screws.
That's what a Richland teen needed to have
implanted in his back to secure his spine after a
car crash left him with severe injuries.
Now a local car wash is pitching in to help with
the Richland High grad's mounting medical bills.
Noah BAKKER ('18) still has no feeling below his
chest after the Aug. 16 wreck. He spent a week in
intensive care and is working hard in physical
therapy every day, according a Facebook post on
his recovery page.
The medical expenses are growing, so his family
set up a GoFundMe page to help with his recovery.
They have raised just over half of their $25,000
goal.
Bush Car Wash, where BAKKER has worked for more
than a year, is hosting a fundraiser at all Tri-
Cities and Walla Walla locations.
For every wash, $1 goes to the Bakker family. The
fundraiser started at 7 a.m. and lasts until
closing at 8:30 p.m.
Richland car wash manager Ashlynn Maki said
BAKKER's co-workers have been in touch with him
and they are thinking about him.
'We all get along,' Maki said. 'He always smiled
and had a great attitude at work.'
BAKKER is at the St. Luke's Rehabilitation
Institute in Spokane, where he will stay for at
least six weeks throughout recovery, according to
the GoFundMe page.
He graduated from Richland High School in June.
He plans to come home to Richland and attend
Columbia Basin College in January."
Prayers for a full recovery, Noah!

It was nice to see young Mr. HOUSE ('63) surrounded by his
"entourage". Even the plaque was sorta nice, but where was
the R Cloud? Thanks, Shirley (66) for the pics.
On this date, in history, those two crazy MacDonald ('53)

Re: Reunion and b-days
So much for my wi-fi skills
Well, as I said, on my little trip to Richland, I had every
intention of using my little "pad" thing to do my Sandstorm
posts... as it turns out, I couldn't even manage to get on
wi-fi at the hotel... Mary Lou ('63) tried to make me feel
better by saying it was not easy at the DI... now alla you
who got on, know she was just being her kind sweet self...
but I will also say that the Gold Medal Reunion and Court of
Dreams celebration were so very cram packed with adventure
and fun it would be hard to spend more than an hour or so
trying to accomplish such a task... I want to relate each and
every minute but just know I will create more confusion than
I will give information... first afternoon in, I hooked up
with John CAMPBELL ('63) and he gave me a very cool glow-in-
the-dark Bomb key chain... it dies glow! Then met with Ellen
WEIHERMILLER ('63), Doug HAWKINS ('62) and Mary Lou WATKINS
('63) who were trying to hook up with Myra WEIHERMILLER
('67), which prevented our group dinner to be as rounded
out... But Jimmie ADAIR ('67), Cecilia BENNETT ('65) and I
did meet up with Tere SMYTH ('65) and Terry DAVIS Knox ('65)
for a fabulous dinner at "Andy's North"... dang that was
good!... I went to sleep that night just a tad full!
Next morning Spuddies, as usual with a good crowd... Sally
SHEERAN ('58) and sister Katie SHEERAN ('61) was in rare form
and the Spuddies went quickly... now I had plans on getting a
good nap, but decided to check out a little store for a new
Bomber shirt... As I drove down Lee, I saw Lyman POWELL ('65)
and met him, Carl BEYER ('65), Annie PASEKA ('65), Connie
DAME ('65) and Laura PARKER ('65) at the Farmer's market
after getting directions from Peter Jo CARROLL ('65) to a
little shop where I though we were gonna meet... On the way
we checked out DeeAnna CRITTENDEN's ('65) books... Laura
suggested a little BBQ place at which Connie declined to
order... I got a slab of brisket onna piece of paper with a
cold bun (at extra cost)... We agreed it was just about the
worst meal for any of us in many years... don't think either
Laura nor Annie finished theirs... I also bought the most
tasteless pork rinds in the world... dang... ate a couple and
then tossed them... so much for that outing! Soon it was time
for "Tacos in the courtyard" and sign in... wow... what a
turn out... friendly faces everywhere... Finally able to put
people with face book, like Tom DAILEY ('63), Don WINSTON
('63) and Duane LEE ('63)... at some point Woody WODEHOUSE
('62/'63) and I hooked up... hadn't seen each other since R2K
and not before that since the night (during my Sr. year) his
mom kicked us outa the house (him "for good" or at least till
he returned from Vietnam)... we didn't lose sight of each
other for pretty much the rest of the reunion... Jim "Pitts"
ARMSTRONG ('63) brought his two lovely daughters and Nancy
WICK ('65) couldn't resist with changing diapers stories...
well OK not that bad... I met a guy I didn't recognize at
first... I think he said his name was Steve DENLER ('64)...
yeah pretty sure that was it... old neighbor time... what
fun! Lamont DEJONG ('63) would later snag a #7 Jersey, the
Number Steve wore back inna day... as you can tell... my
chronology is getting off... because I had spent quality time
with Lamont and Carolyn ROE ('63) much earlier... I'd run
into some kid who kept repeating the words "1002 Van Giesen"
in my ear... reminded me a great deal of Scott DENLER
('67)... that was at the dedication of the Court of Dreams...
what a great event... whole town it seemed turned out! Oh
this is not an easy task and I will leave out so many events
and so very many names... Rod PETERSON ('63)... see... see...
I was witness to at least two miracles during the weekend.
While eating tacos I turned and there was Rosalie LANSING
('63) chomping away... now the last time I spoke to her she
was just out of a coma and I couldn't understand a word she
said... since then my calls have gone to voice mail and I've
been fearing the worst... .but there she was... just like she
was after her last recovery... she has recovered at the very
least... three times from certain death... I leapt from my
chair... we hugged and cried and hugged and cried some
more... she is DRIVING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The other would be
that Jim HOUSE ('63) was able to make the dedication of the
Court of Dreams and crack wonderful jokes...
The entire event was just great... Carol SLEDGE ('63) and
Linda BELLISTON ('63) made sure everyone got their packets...
It was great to run into Frosty BERG ('63), Greg BOYD ('63)
and Don BRACKENBUSH ('63)... Joe CASTLEBERRY ('63) looks just
the same (nudge nudge, wink wink)... It was the first time I
had seen Joe FORD ('63) out of spandex in many years, but
Tony SHARPE ('63)) did bring the '55 to every event...
HAMILTON's Saturday night talk was just as he has always
instructed me they should be... short and funny enough to
make you almost pee yer pants... Reed GAILBRAITH ('63)
refrained from machining anything during the reunion and Rob
HILLS ('63) won a bottle of wine that must have been a huge
prize... Chuck MEYER ('63) actually brought his Jr. Hi
girlfriend, Jeanie WALSH ('63)... I flew to Richland with
Mike SMAHLIK('63) and we didn't speak till we got to the
hotel... neither of us has changed on bit... I got to spend
a buncha time with Dave SIMPSON ('63) and he "out-catted" me
with stories of his Bob-cats! Donni CLARK ('63) kept telling
me I didn't know her so I'm wondering if I should not mention
her birthday any more? Nah... Ann ENGEL and her husband Tony
(NAB) hadda ball catching up and I wore Freddie SCHAFER's
('63-RIP) 20th reunion t-shirt to taco night... Connie FOSTER
('63) let it slip that she is gonna have knee surgery... but
it might be a secret... shhhhhhhhhhhhhh... One afternoon,
Dave HANTHORN ('63) and I visited the Benches (Dick PLOWS
('63-RIP; Pook SMITH ('63-RIP and Steve SIMPSON ('65-RIP)...
Gary LECLAIR ('63) and John PERKINS ('63) have to be the most
unchanged of any kid at the reunion! Well, Micki LUND ('63)
comes in pretty darned close... Perry MOORE ('63) is a close
runner-up... During the photo shoot by class Saturday nite I
only could think of Sue NUSSBAUM to send Rosalie to get a
Jason Lee pic... Did I mention long lost hoodlum buddies,
Gary ZWEIFEL ('63) and Terry DAVIS Knox ('65) managed to find
each other and sneak out one night to roam the old
neighborhood? I don't make this stuff up ya know! Did I also
mention that Lamont was so adamant about seeing that DENLER
get # 7 that he actually had to convince Lloyd West to trade
for #44? During the auction there were two very cool BOMBER
football helmets available... now why Gary SCOFIELD ('63)
needs such an item is beyond me... oh well... I think John
PERKINS may have sold the other one the black market... just
sayin'... One thing I drooled over was the Desert Inn trash
can Kathy RATHVON ('63) snagged... I tried to touch it and
she snapped like a veloseraptor (sp)... Patty KEENEY ('63)
actually let me hold the beautiful runner she won...
On the celebration of Jim HOUSE's Court of dreams... it was
great... beforehand Ray STEIN ('64) Denny NALDER ('65) and
others got Jim to lunch at Bob's and we hadda nice time...
I was able to have a nice talk with Jerry FREE ('62) about
Randy ('61-RIP) and other topics... managed to wave to John
SONDERLAND ('62) as well... Did I mention Rex DAVIS ('49) was
there... Terry CHRISTENSEN ('61) thunk he was the oldest inna
crowd... wrong! We managed to keep Kippy Lou BRINKMAN ('62)
there on time... though Doug almost totaled Ellen's car onna
way... Jim got to take a little down time before the
festivities and then Ray rushed him off... Poor Roy BALLARD
('63) gotta boo boo out at White Bluffs... he will recover, I
am told. Gary WEBB ('63) was holding the b-ball I gave Jim
for the first shot, but lost track of it when he handed it to
the Divine Ms. HOFF who did not let it outta her sight... Ray
managed to borrow one from a Hoff/Webb grandson so all went
well... Oh my what a grand time we had!
OK I know it is obvious that i have mentioned more guys than
Bomber-babes... I am running outa paper and there are still
so many tales to tell... someone with a much better memory
than mine is going to have to take over this story... but I
hadda wonderful time with my Big Kid friends at the Gold
Medal Class Reunion!

Re: Tracy Thomas, Kennewick HS ('87)
"SHE FELL IN LOVE WITH THEATER AT KENNEWICK HIGH.
NOW SHE'S A PRODUCER WITH A WIDELY RELEASED
MOVIE.
By Sara Schilling
September 09, 2018 02:04 PM
Kennewick, WA--Tracy Thomas found a home in the
drama department at Kennewick High.
The 1987 grad was part of every production during
her time at the school, even playing the lead in
"Oklahoma!" her senior year.
That experience stoked her love of performing -
and helped set her on a path to a successful
career in TV and movies. She's co-producer of a
new widely released film, "God Bless the Broken
Road," which opened Friday.
It's playing locally at AMC Classic Kennewick 12
and the Fairchild Cinemas - Pasco.
"It's been a wild ride," Thomas said of her
career.
The producer, who still has family in the Tri-
Cities and visited to celebrate the opening of
her new film, earned a fine arts degree from
Southern Oregon University. She worked in
wardrobe at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in
Ashland for several years, and even did a stint
in the costume shop at a circus in Japan.
Eventually, she settled into TV and film,
starting as a production assistant and working
her way up.
For "God Bless the Broken Road," she traveled to
Michigan to work on the shoot.
The film was directed by Harold Cronk, who also
helmed the popular "God's Not Dead" and its
sequel.
Like those movies, "God Bless the Broken Road" is
faith-based.
It centers on Amber, a young mother who struggles
after her soldier-husband is killed in
Afghanistan.
The film stars Lindsay Pulsipher as Amber, with
Makenzie Moss as her daughter, Kim Delaney as her
mother-in-law and Andrew W. Walker as a race car
driver who moves into town. Jordin Sparks play
Amber's close friend.
Thomas now splits her time between Los Angeles
and Woodland, Wash.
Her mother, Alta Thomas, lives in the Tri-Cities,
along with her sisters, Christi Thomas and Lisa
Julson, and their families.
Her father, Bill, died last year.
She's excited for her family and hometown to see
"God Bless the Broken Road."
"It's very gratifying to be able to bring a film
home that I'm proud of - that my nieces and
nephews and family can all go see," Thomas said.
"It's wonderful to be able to provide (something
like that)."
A portion of proceeds from the film will go to
the nonprofit Disabled American Veterans. A
"Bless a Vet" campaign also is under way to
provide veterans and service members with a movie
ticket and dinner gift card. To learn more or
donate, go to blessavet.com."

Out of great tragedy, comes great triumph.
If you have not seen "Boat Lift" you have missed one of the
only redeeming events from 9/11. Over 500,000 people were
evacuated from lower Manhattan in 9 hours by unnamed heroes.
More than those evacuated from Dunkirk. It's truly an
emotional show to watch. Spontaneous and a true tribute
to American ingenuity.
I think it's a utube or Netflix only show. Watch it.

Nice video of the festivities at the new basketball courts.
Can't remember if there was a ceremony for the opening of

Anyway, there is a Bomber birthday today. Knew him from back

Been meaning to get this into the Sandstorm for awhile. Two
months ago I was going home on GWWay and noticed the Red
Feather home was torn down and the ground leveled. Over the
years organizations like the Girl Scouts used it, for those
of you who don't know. To my understanding it belonged to
Martha and Homer Moulthrop. Homer kept a large portion of
his Chicago / Oak Ridge / Hanford memorabilia in one of the
rooms, along with his entire of collection of tape recordings
of Richland's City Council meetings. Interesting story about
those. As time goes by another Richland landmark goes by the
wayside.

Maren asked me why they call it "Oktoberfest" and not
"Septemberfest?" I said, off handedly that it was an old
world thingy. I know that it is supposed to commemorate the
harvesting of the hops (needed for "das bier"). It may have
started before someone changed the calendar to what it is
today, and that it was then Oktober. Well, that's my story
and Im going to stick with it for the moment.
Be that as it may, today is also the birthday of a "Bomber
Babe" whom I know. She was, back then, a cheerleader. I saw
her in 1999, at a Bomber football game. She was acting as an
honorary cheerleader. Not only that, she was wearing her
uniform (cheerleading) and was still able to do the splits.
I'm lucky if I can get my foot up high enough (sitting) to
trim my toe nails.

You alone have inspired a new generation of basketball
players at Richland High School. What an event it was last
Saturday, September 8, 2018, at the Court of Dreams during
your dedication. Our generation and the future generations
at Richland High (Our Col-Hi) by your speech and the ribbon
cutting ceremony -- were emotionally inspired. The event
brought tears of joy to all of our hearts. You shone with
dignity and grace throughout the day, Jim HOUSE. I'm grateful
to have been a part of this inspiring event.
Thank you for making it happen.
The uniqueness of being raised in Richland, a government town
during the Cold War brought a special INDESCRIBABLE BOND to

memories will live on through the years to come at the

I have been on the road in my van for five weeks now. Left

eaten a bit by chiggers in Iowa at the Maddy farmhouse with
its roof finally collapsing (my cousin owns the land) and
Missouri. Ticks in Tryon, NC. And have yet seen firebugs.
Very unusual. I have spent five days in Fredericksburg, VA
waiting to see what happens with the hurricane. This is my
fourth visit to this awesome town. By far one of the most
interesting in America. Today - yesterday - I am headed

through them all on past trips and really sad to miss them -
it is a long drive, trust me, to get here.
On to Savannah, Orlando and then probably northwest because I
HATE that mile post 998 in Texas, and then choose the routes
to home in a couple more weeks.
Put $7000 in your pocket and take off in your van. I sleep in
WalMart parking lots, dive No Tells, sometimes between the
hotels in their parking lots, a KOA at times, and really nice
hotels on the beach and, of course, in my 2011 Toyota Sienna
which has and I call a five star mattress in a one star hotel
- and when I get around $500 in my pocket, I head home.
Happy travels.

Well, it's quiet in Mount Angel, Oktoberfest went out
slightly damp. And the clean-up should be over soon. After 50
some years of practice, they've almost gotten it down to a
science or something.
On the other hand, there is a birthday of one of the younger
Bombers I know. Rumor has it that he is somewhat of a
"biker". Not to sure what he rides, it could possibly be a
Schwinn. What makes him sort of stand out is that he married
a fellow classmate. That lets him sit at the big kids table

Re: Different Subject
This afternoon I had a great conversation with Rich BAKER
('58) about his work at Hanford and career in reactors in
country and abroad. Fascinating, Rich also helped solved a
mystery about a photograph. One question came up during the
conversation about a criticality between 100-D and 100-H.
There have been two recorded radiation events at Hanford.
One at 234-5Z on Saturday April 6, 1962 the other a few years
earlier in what I'll call the P11 building (fact is I can't
remember at this moment). Plutonium Nitrate was used in
those studies. During one of the tests Plutonium solution
was ejected out into the room contaminating it. Clean up
crews wiped up the liquid with cloth then drummed it up. A
high school chemistry student can guess what happened next.
Well, attached are photos of the building and the
experimental setup.

Re: Jim & the team
Hi Maren,
Jim HOUSE ('63) asked if I could post this picture in the
Sandstorm. Each player on the Bomber Girls' team came over
and personally thanked Jim for his donation. A nice gesture
that meant a lot to Jim.
http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Ste/180918-Girls_Team.jpg
This also gives me a chance to thank some key Richland people
who made the Courts possible. Our contact person with
Richland Parks & Rec. was Phil Pinard. I still remember
the chilly afternoon when Jerry FREE ('62) (the Boeing
construction Guru), Jim, and I first met with Mr. Pinard and
Jim explained his donation and said he wanted the Courts to
be "first class". Mr. Free made some notes and Mr. Pinard
made it all happen - from leveraging Jim's donation to every
detail Jim requested (even the green and gold striping). Who
knew that concrete needed to cure for 28 days? Well, Pinard
and Free both knew!
I also want to thank Phil NEILL ('66) and Earl Streufert,
Richland Basketball Coaches. Phil was my go-to guy in
Richland and took any and all requests as I relayed them from
Jim. Earl not only spoke at the Dedication, but made sure
members of the Boys' and Girls' teams showed up for the first
pickup games. The Boys' team played "skins and shirts" just
like pickup games from a bygone era. I knew Phil and Earl
were great coaches, but I really appreciated their
willingness to help.
Linda BELLISTON Boehning ('63), busy with the '63 Class
Reunion, took time to publicize the Dedication Ceremony. She
also parlayed a connection in City Hall to get our programs
printed. And Jim QUALHEIM ('71), surprised us all with a
rendition of the Bomber fight song at just the right time!
Thanks also to QUALHEIM for the banner that thanked Jim!
When Pinard told us that the City of Richland got complaints
of teens leaving their car lights on to illuminate other
basketball courts in the city, I knew that with high tech
lighting and the location away from neighborhoods, this Court
was indeed "first class"! The Dedication was informal, but
well attended by Jim's classmates and other Bombers (from
CASTLEBERRY ('58) to KELLERMAN ('79) and from Maryland
(BREWER ('65) to Utah (DENLER ('64), too many to name).

Re: Marsha GOSLIN BREHM ('65) Update
As most of you will probably remember, last January,
Marsha had brain surgery for Glioblastoma, which is a
very aggressive cancer, and there is no cure. Normal life
expectancy without treatment is three to four months. Marsha
went through six weeks of radiation and chemo treatment and
has also recently been on oral chemo treatment at home.
On the 10th of this month, she had a reaction to some
medication when I took her to Kadlec Medical Center for an
infusion of platelets because her blood work showed both her
white blood count and platelet count were extremely low. She
also received two units of whole blood because of her red
blood count was low too. During the platelet infusion she had
a reaction to the medication she had received. I had given
her some pain meds prior to the infusion and then the nurses
at the hospital gave her some other meds when they prepared
her for the infusion. She had a reaction to the two and
really went downhill fast! I got the nurses, who called some
kind of code and before I knew it there were several nurses,
a doctor, and a Tech setting up a heart monitor and they gave
her a dose of Narcan to bring her out of it. At that point
the doctor that had been called to her infusion room had her
transferred immediately to ER and they put her in a room
and got immediate attention from one of the ER doctors and
nurses. She was in the ER for about five hours before she
was transferred to a room for observation.
After spending a day on the observation floor, the doctor
she had in the hospital (Kadlec now has staff doctors or
Hospitalists) had her transferred to the seventh floor which
is an acute floor and she was there for five days. On Monday,
the 17th, I got to the hospital about 8:30 and was informed
they had a bed available and she was being transferred over
to Kennewick and admitted to Hospice House. This is now
Wednesday, the 19th as I write this for the Thursday
Sandstorm. Marsha's condition is rather precarious at this
point and there is a chance she may be able to go home at
some point with 24 hour nursing care. This is necessary
because she is pretty much bed-ridden and my back and neck
have reached their limits after nine plus months of caring
for her needs. Before going to the hospital she was to the
point of being in a wheelchair and needing assistance for
everything. This came about two weeks before the hospital
stay when she had a fall in the shower.
She is in the Hospice program and doing better than she was
doing for awhile in the hospital. She may rally and at some
point it would be possible to go home with Hospice care and
24 hour nursing care. To this point I have been her only
caregiver for over nine months and this old man is starting
to run out of gas! I will do my best to keep all who know her
and are regular Sandstorm readers up to date.
At this time Marsha has asked for no visitors. She sleeps a
lot and needs the rest. I will let everyone know when she
can (and wants) visitors. Please respect her wishes. She
will, however, accept all the prayers you may want to pass
along. Her brain cancer is not curable and normal life
expectancy with treatment is a year to 18 months. Marsha is
getting close to 10 months since the surgery.

I want to thank Don Sorenson (NAB) for his contributions to
our Alumni Sandstorm. I especially liked the map of Richland
he included several days ago. I can only remember looking at
a Richland map once when I was in Col-Hi. My first date of
the school year my sophomore year was with Nora LIH ('62),
who had come to Col-Hi from Chief Joseph while I had gone to
Carmichael. Her address was on Harris, a street I had never
heard of. I found it on the map in the northeast corner of
Richland, as far from my house on Birch near Duportail as you
could get and still be in Richland. When I found her house I
became nervous. Compared to the ranch house I lived in, hers
was a mansion. It had a circular driveway going up to the
front door, but I missed the door because I didn't recognize
it. It was a double door, each one about four times the size
of the front door of my house.
Once she was in the car I learned her dad was one of the two
surgeons in town. I realized I had a connection with her. Her
dad saved my life in 1958, just before I started ninth grade.
I'd had a mild upset stomach three days in a row, so my mom
finally took me to the ER, I think partly to show me there
was nothing wrong with me. The ER doctor palpated my abdomen
and couldn't elicit any pain. He said I didn't have
appendicitis, but he ordered a white blood cell count anyway.
About twenty minutes later he came rushing back to repeat
the exam, pressing deep into my abdomen. "Are you sure this
doesn't hurt?" "Yes, I'm sure it doesn't hurt." He told my
mom I didn't have appendicitis, but something was definitely
wrong as my white cell count was extremely high. Twenty
minutes later I was being wheeled into the operating room for
exploratory surgery by Dr. Lih.
It turned out I did have appendicitis. Pressing my abdomen
didn't hurt because the appendix had grown behind my stomach
next to my spine. A normally fifteen-minute operation took
forty-five minutes because the appendix was about to burst.
Nora was a delightful date, but being from a middle-class
family I was so intimidated by a rich (to me) girl that I
never asked her for another one.

Re: Marsha GOSLIN Brehm ('65) Update
Marsha's condition at Hospice House remains pretty much the
same. She has however, developed sort of a rattle and cough.
This morning shortly after our daughter, Kristin and I got
here, she was complaining of pain in the neck and lower head
area. We had a nurse come in and for the fist time since she
got here on Monday, she asked for pain medication. They gave
her a pain med tablet, but she didn't want to take the whole
15 mg of Morphine, so we settled on her taking 7.5 mg. Marsha
has always been one of the type of people who is extremely
against taking anything stronger than Tylenol for pain. While
taking care of her at home the only pain med I could get her
to take was a Tylenol #3. She would on a rare occasion take
a Hydrocodone pill, but that was very rare. After taking the
morphine this morning she slept for several hours and right
now says she isn't in any pain that she would want medication.
Those of you who are familiar the Hospice program know that
when you are under their care it is normally termed "comfort
care", meaning no regular meals and liquids only. Medications
are normally kept to pain and sleep meds as needed. Marsha
has done real well, not taking anything for sleep and today
was the first day she asked for something for her pain.
Depending on how she does in the upcoming days, there is a
possibility she may be discharged from here and can go home
with Hospice providing all the things she would need there
i.e. a hospital bed, food table, etc. They come in prior to
your discharge and set everything up, so when you arrive home
(most likely by ambulance), everything is ready for you, but
that is yet to be seen. The Hospice Doctor sees her daily on
his rounds, and that is his call.
Before I wrap this up, as her husband, I want to thank all of
you who have sent well wishes and prayers to Marsha in her
fight against this horrible disease. Glioblastoma is such an
aggressive and unforgiving cancer that it's very rare that
anyone is able to beat it. Somewhere in the neighborhood of
5% or less. Having cancer myself just last summer (2017), I
couldn't in my wildest dreams imagine Marsha would have this
happen six months or so after I went through treatment. I had
(or have) prostate cancer which is nothing compared to what
she is going through. She is drinking a little water and
apple juice but really hasn't eaten anything since she
arrived here on Monday morning.
Once again, thank you for your support and prayerts. I will
do my best to let you know how she is doing and let you know
when she feels she might be up to visitors. She sleeps a good
portion of the day.

Re: This could get a little long
Those who are not fans may wish to scroll down... I have two
things I must say in the beginning: First, I wish Marsha
GOSLIN ('65) and Lion, Gary God's blessings. God doesn't
need my permission, he is there now and always, but I stand
with him. Second: It is more than well known that I can be a
total jerk. The '63 Reunion was no exception. At Jim's ('63 #
32) dedication, April SNOEBERGER ('65) was trying to have a
nice conversation with Ellen WEIHERMILLER ('63), as luck
would have it I was next to E and, as E, ML ('63) and I can
get a little silly with each other, I very rudely butted
in... very rudely. It bothered me from the moment I did it
and I am just now apologizing from my heart (yes I do have
one).
Now, did I mention that Kurt JOHNSON looks almost like his
Sr. Pic to this day? Well he does. There was a time, I wanted
to think I looked like mine as well. Those days are way long
gone. If I had a nickel for every person who couldn't place
me the other weekend... well I'd have a pocket full. Shock
was what registered... (damn poor guy sure didn't age well)..
Terry DAVIS Knox ('65) hexed me during that weekend. He said
my cataract lenses could go cloudy. After the Reunion, I
jumped on a plane which would allow me to visit 5 states in
a few days. One of those labors of love... Wife, Kathy is
trying to do all 50 states. Me If I have a reason to go,
fine... otherwise... no big whoop. Landed in Rhode Island
(gotta make sure I can have a gun in my luggage and some
states are a bit strange.) Now Rhode Island may be small, but
it is very busy. I've never been a yuppy so Newport didn't do
anything for me (Sorry ML)... but by golly I was gonna see
it all. I dug Plymouth Rock, but the "Cape" was just a lotta
sand (maybe in the summer of '42 I'da thought differently)...
However, the next day some Boogie boarder was killed by a
shark where we had been. (Same thing happened in some other
place last year when a lady got et by a gator right where
we'd been). I was very disappointed in Boston... I know it's
been well over 200 years but dang... that's where our Country
was started... fake three cornered hats at the Federal sites
were... welll uhhh... nevermind... USS Constitution was
cool, but I couldn't get near it cuz I was carryin'... There
were big signs touting Mass. Gun laws... in various places
around Boston... just a comment that's all...
Actually drove to the edges of Connecticut, New Hampshire
and Vermont and found a small Boarder town in each to foot
the bill (airports don't count). Saw some one lane covered
bridges and drove over one... The food everywhere was
very good except in one little town called Putnum... yuppy
sandwiches in a very very cool town... The food everywhere
EXCEPT Rhode Island was wayy over priced... but still good.
The food in Rhode Island was "home cookin'" like mom never
made... lots of it and delicious... and about 1/4 of every
other state in price...
Great time, great food... standing on the Ocean, waiting to
head for the airport, my left eye went "Beezer"... a great
word Brian JOHNSON ('65) used to use. It was as though
someone took black paint and painted a wavy, thick line on my
eye... within seconds it dissipated and broke into thousands
of little perfect circles kind of like the birds taking off
in the movie of the same name (Birds not Beezer). Vacations
are wonderful, till it's time to hit the airport, play the
renta car game and smile purdy for the TSA folks... when I
checked my "firearm" the man whispered "a hand gun?" I nodded
(our little secret)... he didn't wanna see it as they do in
places like Montana, Arizona and parts of Colorado... we need
to invent something to just whisk us home in seconds...
someone work on that...
When I got home, the garage door spring had broken... when I
got up to wait for the guy, I called the Doc who did my eye
surgery and was told to get in NOW! Cars were in the garage,
but the '40 had been sitting in the rain. Cleaned the
windshield and zoomed of for the Doc (thanks Terry!). After
a very very thorough exam, Doc said retina was fine... just
a "floater" (the size of Cleveland) that would clear up by
itself. Whew... avoid talking to Terry about cataract
surgery...
So... now to the third point of this post... I gotta good
buddy who didn't make the reunion, but his wife keeps us all
posted on their wonderful trips ('63)... gotta nuther Buddy
who spends a great deal of time honoring Purple Heart Vets...

Hawthorne said. 'I wanted to tell everybody.'
She and Stacy Lee both are popular Tri-City radio
personalities, with Hawthorne on Hot 97.5 and
Stacy Lee on 98.3 The Key and 102.7 KORD.
They competed on 'Beat Shazam' against two other
sets of DJs from around the country.
Jamie Foxx is the host; his daughter Corinne
Foxx, an actress, model and writer, also appears.
On the show, two-person teams compete to
correctly name classic and current popular songs
across multiple genres. The team with the most
money heading into the final round faces off
against the song identification app Shazam.
On Tuesday's episode, Hawthorne and Stacy Lee
were the last pair standing.
They held their own against Shazam in the intense
final round, with Hawthorne correctly naming the
Bette Midler song 'The Rose' to double their
earnings and walk away with $256,000. If she'd
missed, they'd have left with a quarter of that
amount.
'It was the most stress I've ever been under in
one situation,' Hawthorne said of the moments
leading up to that final question.
But she had a childhood friend who used to play
'The Rose' frequently on the piano, so Hawthorne
immediately recognized it.
She sent the friend a message after the episode
aired, saying thanks.
Hawthorne will use her share of the winnings to
pay off bills, help family and travel.
Stacy Lee has similar plans, including taking her
husband on a Caribbean cruise.
Like Hawthorne, she had fun flying to L.A.,
filming the show, meeting Jamie and Corrine Foxx
and going up against Shazam.
It was a thrilling experience.
'It was wonderful,' she said. 'We had such a good
time."

Re: Summer of '42
I saw that movie while in he Navy, as did seems like everyone
else. The story is of Hermie looking back from 1971? to the
summer of 1942. Another sailor told me that in the book
throughout the whole story wherever Hermie goes he is always
getting pooped on by a seagull. At the end of the book he
arrives, goes all around the town and no one remembers him,
so he gets back in his car, heads out of town, and a seagull
dive bombs his windshield.
I bought a copy of the book and started by reading the last
two or three pages and he was right. Never did get around to
reading the whole book, but I still have it boxed up
somewhere. Checked out ebay and you can buy a used one for as
little as $3.00 but some company has a new "unread" one for
$73.75. I don't know if they will ever get that much for it,
but I have one, same edition, that is 99% unread and I would
gladly part with that one for a paltry $50.00.

Re: Marsha GOSLIN Brehm ('65) Update
This is Marsha's fifth day in Hospice House and there have
been some changes in her. She sleeps a lot, but she was doing
that at home too, before she went to the hospital and now
here at Hospice House. At home she was sleeping 20 plus hours
a day and I would get her up for meals and then she would
want to return to bed.
Probably the biggest change occurred this morning when she
began hallucinating. She asked what that thing was under the
TV. We told her it was the box and power supply for the
television. She said she thought it was a "Honu", which is
Hawaiian for a Sea Turtle. Then she asked the nurse if they
could clean up her room and get rid of all the liquor bottles
sitting around. She told them that neither of us drank and it
bothered her to have such a mess of bottles around the room .
We repositioned a few things like her water cup and apple
juice and she was happy.
The Hospice doctor was in this morning also, and she told him
she wanted to go home with Gary (me) and he said they were
working on that. He did check her out and the nurses had
informed him they thought she had Thrush in her mouth. Sure
enough, she does and they are going to treat it. She just had
it and was treated by her Oncologist about a month or so ago.
While the doctor was here, so was Tim Ledbetter, the head
Chaplain here at Hospice House and also on staff at Kadlec.
She had requested to see him and he was kind enough to take a
half hour out of his busy schedule the stop in to see her.
We've known Tim for years and he performed the services for
both Marsha's parents, Bill and Vivian Goslin. The last, her
Dad's 10 years ago, but he remembered both of us and it was a
pleasure to see him again. I'm pretty sure when Marsha's day
comes he will be there to do her service.
Our daughter, Kris, from Seattle has been has been here with
me for the past several days. Her employer, Seattle City
Light, has been gracious enough to grant her a month of paid
leave so she could come to be with not only her mom, but give
me support which has really made all the difference in the
world to both of us.
Thank you all, for all the letters and notes you have sent.
She has received emails and texts of encouragement from Col
High/RHS classmates and even many who graduated in the '50s
and those who graduated in later years. I thank you all so
much and I want you to know I have read each and every one of
them to Marsha. It means so much to her and of course to me
and I thank you all.

Re: Alphabet houses
The other day(s), I spent a bit of time driving around in
small towns on the other coast... something struck me right
between the ol eyeballs... no not the Terry DAVIS Knox ('65)
eye curse... but the similarity to driving around in Richland...
all of a sudden I was driving along rows and rows of alphabet
houses... "A" houses, single and duplex, "B" houses, single and
duplex, "F" houses, precuts and those houses between the
private drive and the dike just south of Haines where Cecilia

pretty shocking to say the least... Rhode Island was full of
them... now it was a mystery to me but I am sure our resident

On this last day of summer, 2018, it rained a bit here and
there and not necessarily in the same spot. Not to fear,
friends, the readers of the weather entrails say that by the
end of the week; it should be dry with temps in the mid
eighties.
I note on the Bomber calendar that there is a birthday of one
of the younger Bombers. I've never met the young man, but
we have conversed electronically. Found out that he is a
graduate of EWCE and could be listed as a "Savage" had not
the forces of political correctness decreed they should be
know as the "Fighting Eagles". The jury is still out on which
is more offended.

Re: Marsha GOSLIN Brehm ('65) Update
Day number six for Marsha at Hospice House and she is not
doing as well has she has been the previous five days she's
been here. The weekend doctor was just in on his rounds and
noted a couple things that I had mentioned to the regular
Hospice doc. Marsha is anti-medication, especially with
anything that contains Opioids and even though she may need
them, she is still quite reluctant when it comes letting the
nurses give them to her. They said this morning she had a
dose of morphine during the night and she did take some after
our daughter and I got here this morning. Since then, she's
been sleeping most of the time. Doctor did notice she has
Thrush which they noted yesterday. I got the impression they
were going to medicate for that, but haven't so far. She had
it about a month ago and her Oncologist gave her a
prescription for it and it cleared up.
It's quite an experience going through this type of journey
with a loved one, not only theirs, but also the long days you
spend at the Hospice House with your wife, husband, mother,
father or whomever it may be that is here. The days are long
and I for one have eaten more cookies and snacks this week
than I normally do in a year.
A nurse just came in and applied a Fentanyl patch on Marsha's
arm. That way she will be more comfortable and they won't
need to give her short acting pain meds. She has been
sleeping since shortly after she had the dose of morphine
this morning, about four hours ago. She slept a lot when she
was still at home, too, but the Oncologist told me that was
most likely the oral chemo she was on then. Since coming to
Hospice House they have taken her off all her daily
medications like blood pressure, Nexium, etc. She gets only
comfort meds.
Once again, I want thank all who have sent emails and texts,
plus Facebook messages to Marsha and myself. The response has
been overwhelming to say the least! Up until today I have
read all of them to her, but she's been sleeping so much
today I haven't had the chance to do it. Just know it means a
lot to her and several of them have brought tears to my eyes!
Especially those that include me in the message. Who would
ever think, a Kennewick guy and a sweet Richland girl
could be so happy and compatible. She has said many times,
especially when we had our 25th anniversary, June 8th, that
she wished we could have another 25. My response to her: "you
hung out at the wrong Zip's!!!"
From a KHS Lion to all Bombers: Please help keep this
wonderful forum you have going. Send your dues to Maren for
all the hard work she puts in to get this sent to all of you
365 days a year. I hate it when I look at my phone or laptop
over my coffee in the morning and the Alumni Sandstorm says
NOT on it!!!

Re: That was the week that was
I have no clue why I remember that show so well... but on
this date, I always think this is the day that is... Two very
close friends used to celebrate together when they could...
didn't really happen often but it lingers as a great memory
in my mind... Now the one guy was my age (just thought of
something said at the '63 reunion about age... maybe I'll
remember it later)... he may have been nearly a year younger
as many of us had to wait till we got our draft cards to
start kinneygarden... not sure... he was a kid who never
grew up in many ways... Terry DAVIS Knox ('65) and I always
thought of him as the guy who never stopped seeing all the
colors of the big box of crayons, while many of our colors
began to fade to gray... On the other hand he saw Terry
and me as having never progressed mentally or in any other
way beyond 7th grade... we were more... uhhhhhhhh... ok
immature... like the time I had been stalking the last full
sized Railroad sign in all of L.A. Now Terry and I tried
many times to nab it, but it never quite worked out...
over several weeks just before success... I had sprayed
penetrating oil on the huge bolts at the bottom... but we
decided we needed an extra hand to make sure we didn't damage
the sign as it dropped... We called this guy in Seattle and
said we'd take him to a nice dinner and then to Venice Beach
if he flew down... after wining and dining, we grabbed a rope
and headed for the scene... sure he was confused but it was
Davis and me... normal stuff... when he saw why he was in
L.A. he yelled something about we would never grow up and
were still doing the same stuff we did in Jr Hi... well
geeez... of course we were... I finally got the sign but
that's another story... Now the big kid... was one I always
admired as a lowly Soph... that admiration hasn't dampened...
what a guy... at the '63 reunions, he does the wrap up... he
is very strict on the length and the content... short and
memory jogging... great memory jogging... the kind where we
can all laugh at ourselves for shared silliness... So how
many girls did go out with Pasco guys anyway? The third
fellow is one I haven't seen since school I'm sorry to say.

Re: Marsha GOSLIN Brehm ('65) Update
Marsha seems much more alert and is awake more today then she
has been in previous days here at Hospice House. Yesterday
they applied a Fentanyl patch to her arm rather than relying
on short acting morphine to keep her comfortable. It seems to
be working and she even asked to watch the Seahawks game on
TV. Only problem is she then fell asleep.
Our son-in-law, Mason and grandson, PJ (Palmer) made the
drive over from Seattle to see her yesterday afternoon. They
spent the night and are going back over to the west side this
afternoon. Our daughter, Kristin, will stay and help me with
whatever, but most important be here for support and spend
some time with her mom.
Marsha has developed a very bad cough with congestion the
past few days. I'm not sure exactly what that means, but it's
sounds terrible. They are getting ready give her something
for the cough, so hopefully it will help.
I'm not sure what I would do without the wonderful care
Hospice House provides to patients like Marsha. I took care
of her myself at home for nine and a half months and it had
become a real difficult situation at times. The last two or
three weeks see was in a wheelchair and unable to do anything
for herself. I was "on duty" pretty much 24/7. If she needed
the bathroom at 3:00am it meant get her out of bed, into the
wheelchair, into the bathroom and onto the toilet. When done,
it was the reverse. Then you get back into bed and try to go
back to sleep. Having Hospice House in the Tri-Cities is a
wonderful asset if you have a family member who is in need
of constant care.
Again today, thank you all who have sent Marsha well wishes
in her battle with this terrible brain cancer. At this point,
it means almost daily changes in your loved one and believe
me, it is very difficult to watch. I would do anything to rid
her of this aggressive, incurable disease.

Re: Marsha GOSLIN Brehm ('65) Update
Marsha is having a pretty good day today, but the staff here
at Hospice House have started giving her additional pain
medication prior to repositioning her (to prevent bedsores)
or changing bedding, etc. We have started week #3 without her
eating any solid food and drinking very little liquid, so if
this continues, her prognosis is not good. She keeps saying
she wants to go home, but this is impossible without around
the clock nursing care. We are in the process of trying
obtain that through Hanford Employees Resource Center and at
this time we are just waiting for verification from Hanford
as to her 30 years of employment there. Actually, her best
place to be is here at Hospice House, where they give
absolute tremendous care to the patients.
Marsha has been asking to see our cats, Koa and Mac. Seven
year old litter mates we adopted from POPP a little over
three years ago. Koa resembles a Siamese mix and Mac looks
like a Snowshoe and they are male litter mates. Hmmm,
different fathers maybe? Anyway, the past several days Marsha
has made the comment that she really misses them and would
really like to see them again. We use a mobile pet grooming
service about once a month and with all that has been going
on with Marsha, I'm a couple weeks late getting them groomed
and nails done. I just found out that pets are allowed to be
here, so I've made arrangements for the pet service to come
tomorrow and get them all groomed. I will then load them up
in their carriers and being them to see her as a surprise!
I'm hoping it'll make her day.
It's a little hard to judge her condition, but when you look
at the overall picture, you are able to note things that tell
you where this is all going. She has really pretty good long
term memory, but short term, is almost non existent and she
is talking quite a bit of "gibberish" the past couple of days
that makes no sense at all. She has started asking to see
certain people to come visit, where before she has asked me
to write that no visitors at this time is what she wanted.
So, I guess if you are so inclined and would like to see her,
it would be fine to do so as long as they are on the brief
side. She does tire easily. Having the nurses come and remake
the bed for her tires her out and she usually will sleep
afterward.
As before, ever since she's been here at Hospice House, well
wishes keep pouring in and it's just incredible how many
people know and remember her from her school days. I read as
many of the notes as possible to her, but she does tend to
sleep a lot and I can't always read them when they come in by
email, text, and Facebook. Also, you may have noticed in my
post yesterday, because I started my school education at
John Ball Grade School in North Richland, and do post on the
Sandstorm (mostly about my incredible wife) Maren has granted
me "Honorary Bomber" status!
Not much else for today. Thank you again for all the notes
and prayers. Please know, they a greatly appreciated!

"WIND SNAPS LIMBS AND WIRES, KILLING ONE AND

Richland, WA --- "Wind wreaked havoc at two
festivals in the Tri-Cities on Saturday, killing
a woman and sending at least two others to the
hospital and hurting several others.
Steady 18-mph wind and gusts of up to 25 mph
knocked down a tree limb at the Ye Merrie
Greenwood Renaissance Faire and toppled a
concrete post at the annual Christ the King
Sausage Fest.
In Columbia Park, Stephanie L. Judd, 37, of
Benton City, was sitting on a bench with her son
when the branch came down on them at about 2:40
p.m., said Chief Deputy Coroner Roy McLean.
The branch hit and killed her.
Her husband was also at the event.
Three to five people were underneath the branch
when it came down, and another 20 to 30 people
were in the area, Officer Keith Noble said. She
was the only one hurt by the branch.
Several witnesses described hearing a large crack
before the branch fell. Noble said people
attending the event did race in to help after it
fell.
No events were scheduled for the area.

An opportunity to hear some world war two history of the
DAY'S PAY.
On September 28th at the East Auditorium from 6-8PM, Mr.
Wyatt Wineinger, the son of the pilot of the Day's Pay
bomber, will be giving a talk about the history of the
Day's Pay bomber and it's missions and crew. The Day's Pay
was a B-17 bomber purchased by employees of the Hanford
Engineer Works in 1944 who were encouraged to "give a day's
pay and send a bomber on its way" to the European theater.
The plane was purchased with these individual donations, had
a short ceremony here at the Hanford Construction Camp (about
10 miles north of our campus near the town of Hanford), and
then flew over 60 missions in Europe before being excessed
and scrapped at the end of the war. More historical
information on the Day's Pay can be found at
http://www.historylink.org/File/7491
The Hanford History Project is helping a local historian*
Don Sorenson, plan events commemorating this history. Mr.
Wineinger will be visiting us for several days from his home
in Holcomb, KS and this Presentation/Q&A will also feature
artifacts and archival material from the Day's Pay and some
of the crew reunions. This talk is open to students, staff,
faculty, and the general public. Please tell your students
and consider attending what is sure to be an interesting talk
and discussion!
Wyatt will also be at the Richland Library Friday afternoon
beginning at 2:30 going to 4:30. It will be an excellent
opportunity to learn more about the B-17 your parents or
grandparents purchased for the war effort.

Re: Marsha GOSLIN Brehm ('65) Update
Today has been a different day for us and Marsha at Hospice.
She has been saying things that really don't make sense, plus
at times hallucinating. One of the things she has been asking
for, besides going home, is to see our two cats, Mac and Koa.
So, today I arranged for the Mobile Pet Groomers to meet me
at the house at 11:30 for a grooming and nails. That went
well and I then loaded them in their carriers and drove back
to the Hospice House with the two of them and brought them in
for the big surprise. Walked in and Marsha was sound asleep!
We tried and tried to wake to make her so she could see The
Boys! Nope, she wouldn't wake up, so I had to load them back
up and take them home.
While I was out from Hospice taking care of the cats, I was
able to get a couple errands taken care of which has been
hard to do lately. When I retuned to Hospice House I found
Marsha still sleeping. She was somewhat agitated this morning
so they gave her some Ativan. Then before I left to get the
cats she was starting to hurt and it wasn't quite time to
change her patch, so she got a dose of break through pain
medication (morphine) and I suppose that might have something
to do with her sleeping most of the day.
While I was gone taking care of the cats, etc. the house
doctor made his rounds and apparently, depending on Marsha's
condition tomorrow her time here which is fully covered by
Medicare may be ending. This all depends on the doctors
assement of her condition and if she is still declining or
has kind of reached a plateau which may mean she may or may
not have to leave Hospice House. If she is allowed to stay
and there aren't any desperate need for beds, we would be
switched to a pay basis. If she has to be discharged to home,
Hospice would supply free of charge, all the things that
would be needed. Hospital bed, meal tray, etc. They come in
and set everything up in your home, BUT, the 24 hour nursing
care needed would be our responsibility! So, we wait until
tomorrow (Wednesday) to see what happens as far as Marsha's
stay here. Being here does give us somewhat of a break in the
evenings for a couple hours, as we spend the entire day here
with Marsha.
We are still waiting for word from the "Energy Employees
Occupational Illness Compensation Program" which is close to
being decided in Seattle. Apparently, the only thing holding
things up is verification from Hanford of 30 years of
service. It could come through almost any time. I will
hopefully be able to write some good news that she will be
allowed to stay here at Hospice.
Thanks to all for your generous notes and kind words. I will
let you all know of her condition and status tomorrow.

A footnote to Jim "Pitts" ARMSTRONG ('63) and his
"So Groovy: One-Hit Wonders Of The 1960s"
In late September of 2000 I had been backpacking in the
Sawtooths with my Number One dog and had come back out to
resupply for a second excursion. Catching a local Boise
radio station which was advertizing a pending concert by the
Tokens, and had one of the members talking about the group
and their history, I made the following note of one of his
stories:
(NOTE: heard an interesting interview with a member of the
"Tokens," the group who recorded "The Lion Sleeps Tonight"
in the 1960s. They were to perform at the "oldies" radio
station's 10th anniversary in Boise that weekend. The story
told was that the "Lion" was the number two side of a record
with "Tina," a Portuguese song, as the number one side. A
disk jockey in Falmouth, Massachusetts, had begun playing the
flip side and was receiving considerable demand for the song.
He called RCA, the producer of the record, asking for 10,000
copies! Initially, RCA didn't admit knowing about the song,
but finally found they had produced it. They looked up
Falmouth on a map and, noting it had a population of less
than 5,000, thought the request was a hoax. They ultimately
agreed to forward 10,000 copies and, within a short time the
record had sold more copies than Elvis had done with any of
his records in such a short period.)

I am surprised that the "Day's Pay" people are not making a
pilgrimage to the mural. It does pay homage to both the
workers who paid for it and the crews (2 I think) who flew
it. But, to be clear, it has nothing to do with the "Bombers."
Be that as it may, there is a Bomber Babe celebrating a
milestone in her life on this day. I jokingly assume that she
graduated, but she would have been behind me in the line to
get the old sheepskin. For you younger folk, that's what they
used to call diplomas way back then. Would want to waste
paper on such an item, and sheepskin was cheaper.
Therefore a flourish of the ol' propeller beanie and a "Happy

occasion of her 24th or may be the 25th. Which ever. This
does not mean that certain people in certain adult watering

Things have changed very little for Marsha in the past 24
hours or so. Yesterday, she slept and we were here almost all
day and hardly got to talk to her at all. This morning when
we arrived she was almost the same. The doctor made his
rounds and the fact she hasn't eaten in about three weeks
and is drinking almost no liquids, he thinks her kidneys
will be shutting down soon. After that, we all know what the
progression will be, but don't know how long it will take. So
very sad to see such a beautiful person like this, and not be
able to do anything to help her. It doesn't seem fair!
Doctor is keeping her on the same status so Medicare will
pick up the tab. If they sent her home we checked into full
time, 24 hour nursing and at approximately $25.00 per hour,
it would be about $600 per day. She gets such quality care
here at Hospice House, there's no way I want to move her. She
seems comfortable and they have her on medications that are
keeping her out of pain. The doctor did say today, that he
thought it was more the cancer and not the medication that
was keeping her in the condition she is in right now.
So, we wait! As long as she's kept comfortable, I'm glad
she's here. It is the best place for her. Thank you again for
your notes and support, I can't believe how many of you we've
heard from. Please know each one is greatly appreciated!

When we arrived at Hospice House this morning, Marsha seemed
a little more alert and would respond and talk to us. The
nurses said she had a good night but, the doctor thought
she was still declining when he made his report. She fell
asleep shortly after the doctor made his rounds and has been
sleeping most of the day. They were just in and medicated her
before giving her a bed bath. They do this as it is painful
for her to be moved for baths or even changing her bed
sheets. This is the wonderful thing about having your loved
one in Hospice, they don't worry about giving additional
medication if needed. Marsha was just saying her neck was
still hurting and the nurse went to get more meds.
We don't know how long this will take, but we come to Hospice
every morning and the last three days and except for a brief
period this morning, she has been pretty much sleeping all
day. We watch and wait, not knowing what to expect. She's
loved by many and has been my wife for over 25 years now. It
is very hard to watch. On one hand you don't want to lose
them, but then you don't want them to lay in bed hurting
either. Once again I truly love Hospice and all their
dedicated people.
They just gave Marsha a little more morphine as she is still
hurting and they are going to give her the bed bath shortly.
It's time for us to leave the nurses to their work. Maybe
Maren will include the entry I sent yesterday, unless it was
lost in cyber space!!

Re: Marsha GOSLIN Brehm ('65) Update
When you are watching a loved one go through a terrible
disease process like Marsha is with brain cancer, each day
seems to be different, sometimes there are changes within
the time you spend with them. Yesterday I wrote that the day
seemed pretty much as it was the day before. When we got
here this morning, she seemed about the same and now at 2pm
Pacific she just went through a period that left daughter
Kristin as well as myself in tears. One more time I am
so grateful to Hospice and the nurses here, it's really
incredible in the care they give. Kristin told the nurse
she was complaining of pain and seemed agitated and they
immediately gave her Morphine for the break through pain and
Ativan for the agitation she is having. She was asking us how
do we get out of this jungle and who are all these people in
the room. So the human brain is hard to understand sometimes
but having glioblastoma, I have done quite a bit of reading
about it and know that there will most likely be many of
these changes and periods of change as she goes through this
period. Having her here and having them able to have a bed
for her when needed was a miracle in itself. There is no way
I could give her this quality of care at home, even with
nursing help. They are so well trained and have seen it all,
so they know how to take care of any situation that may
arise.
The doctor's visit went well today and he noted the decline
Marsha is experiencing. He upped her pain patch to the next
dosage and that will most likely make the break through pain
periods less. Along these lines, Marsha is now starting to
have a pretty difficult time swallowing, even water through
a straw. This brings about the fear if given too much, she
may asperate it and then you have real problems. So, on that
note, we have gone to ice chips and the foam like suckers
they have that are dipped in water and then used to wet the
mouth. Like I said earlier, they know all the ways to take
care of the patient, where having your loved one at home
would be very difficult. So we wait and pray that Marsha is
as comfortable and this difficult journey will be over soon.
It is so very hard to watch your loved one like this...

Re: Marsha GOSLIN Brehm ('65) Update
Marsha is slowly declining, and needing more pain medication
to keep her comfortable. We arrived at Hospice House this
morning (Saturday) and she was awake for awhile and able to
talk, but difficult to understand and hear. Her daughter,
Kristin, thought of something that might please her mom. We
brought several Brother Iz CDs that we have bought over the
years when we've been in Hawaii. We played them for her
and she smiled and I know she enjoyed them. She has always
considered Hawaii her second home and we both enjoyed going
there usually twice a year. After listening to the music, she
was having some pain, so the nurse gave her some additional
medicine besides her patch and she fell asleep in about 15
minutes.
We're waiting for two of her grandsons from Seattle, Mitch
and PJ to arrive so they can see their grandma. Hopefully,
she will wake up for them and be able to have a little
conversation. Kris's husband is driving them over and they
will return to Seattle tomorrow as they have work and school
on Monday.
Tomorrow (Sunday) will be two weeks here and the doctors say
once a person quits consuming water the kidneys will fail and
then the other organs. Marsha has had very little water and
it has become difficult for her to swallow. Her medication
is given with applesauce or mixed with a liquid and put in a
syringe and then given in the cheek where it can be absorbed
quickly in membranes and under the tongue. It's like taking
medicine sublingual. Either method seems to work, but I think
the liquid from the syringe might be a little faster acting,
if done right.
We are still receiving messages from people from all class
years at Col Hi/Richland and we thank you very much. We enjoy
reading them and if Marsha is awake I try to read them to
her. I really not sure how much she is able to understand,
but I try. A funny thing happened yesterday with her. Out of
the blue, she asked me "where does Tere SMYTH ('65) live?" I
have no idea why, but I did go to the Facebook page of our
friends and showed her a picture of Tere. One taken at her
reunion, and Marsha smiled and said "yes, that's Tere." Thank
you once again for all your well wishes and messages, I will
be here again tomorrow unless God has different plans in mind!

On July 23rd 1944 DAY'S PAY was christened, at Hanford's

she christened the nose of the plane however photographic

was returning from a mission over Germany, it had been a
rough go for both plane and crew as three engines had failed
due to enemy action. At the time they were over France
when Arlys told the navigator to get ready to bail out. The
Channel wasn't far away and he knew the water temp didn't
lend to survival. The navigator asked if he was going to bail
also. Arlys replied no I'm flying it back to base. Well Hell
if you're going we're staying with you. Plane and crew made
it back on one engine, number 4. It wasn't until today, his
son learned it had been christened by Mrs. Harris. Arlys
Duane Wineinger, DAY'S PAY pilot, said later "I had to get
the Hanford employee's plane back". By the way, it landed
with only 25 gallons of fuel left.
This was just one of the many stories of the man who flew her
and the original crew that served our country so gallantly
tonight at WSU Tri Cities. For those of you who might be
interested at 1 p.m. the official turnover of artifacts from
DAY'S PAY will take place at WSU's Hanford History Project 1
at 2892 Pauling Avenue in Richland. In addition there will be
a surprise reveal for Wyatt and Laura Wineinger, son and
daughter-in-law of Arlys following the turnover.
