Re: Central Washington
Being a graduate of Central Washington, I am going about 3
hours north this Saturday to see them play SW Baptist in
Bolivar, Missouri. I follow them on the net, each week their
athletic director (Dr. Dennis Francois) writes a summary of
their weekly activity. It is a very informative, well written
summary of Central's sports activity. I look forward to
meeting him. The game may not be very close, Central is
ranked and SW Baptist has not won a game all year. Just a
touch of years past in memories for me, I may be the oldest
guy in the stadium.

Re: My piles of Unread magazines and journals
HEY Again, all you Club 40 classmates - and anyone you know
who's "non-Club 40" but might be interested- Family or
Friends?
I was Serious! I'm giving away my un-read back issues of
some good periodicals. I'll send some of them to you. Yeah
it "smarts" a bit. But I have the new issues coming in and I
now finally accept the fact that will not catch up and read
those past issues. Too much going on, for my 82 year old
capability. Here are Titles of some of them: Issues in
Science and Technology (which I cited previously); Scientific
American; Discover (which is equally good); Science News,
a bi-weekly, from The Society for Science and the Public,
which sponsors several elite National and International
Competitions of Jr High and HS science students' projects.
And of which I donate annual subscriptions to the science
departments of two local high Schools; The New Republic, the
Progressive Public Affairs and Culture journal (which dates
back to the WW I years); and the Two-Standard-for-Every-
Household - Smithsonian, and National Geographic. I have
varying numbers of back '18 Issues, and a few '17.
My Best to all my fellow "Our Unique Growing-Up Community
Experience RHS mates. Give me a buzz.

Did the "Great Pumpkin" come to your house and bring lots of
gifts? Or was it those mean kids in the neighborhood that
t.p.ed the tree in the front yard? Well, that's all over for
another year.
And now for the moment we've been waiting for. Yeah, the
mention of yet another Bomber birthday. Now this one, I did
go to school with. I presume he graduated. As he was behind
me in the line, I really don't know. He alleges to have gone
to Central following graduation, but, I can claim having been
in the UofW library too (only because it was raining).
A tip of the ol' propeller beanie and a "Happy Birthday!" to
Jim "Tank" MEFFORD ('54). That's what GRIFFIN ('54) called
him back then. Just be sure you take Jeanette ('54) some
where other than Carl's Jr. for dinner tonight.

Re: High School USA
While working on a car most of the day, I listened to a lotta
music on '50s on 5... it dawned on me that during my teen
years about half the songs were about some guy or babe
worrying that his or her sweetie was gonna dump them...
Think about it "Silhouettes" by the Rays, "Teenager in Love"
by Dion and "What A Surprise" by Johnny Maestro and the
Crests... Now I know I'm rather shallow... some would say
worse than shallow... but in Jr and High School... the one
thing of which there was never a shortage (assuming you
didn't go to an all boy or all girl school) was guys and
dolls! I mean come on kids. All day long during the school
week, one was surrounded by eligible potential sweeties and
on weekends there was the Uptown, Zip's, Hi-Spot mixers
and on and on... As Terry DAVIS Knox ('65) mentioned to me
today... the only time anyone wanted to skip school was on
nice days... all the other time we wanted to be where the
action was... High School USA! And today we have two Bomber-
babes celebrating... HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Judy WILLOX ('61) and

Al Yencopal's choice for me was the Army.
My buddies were Mark MERRILL ('68) and Ronnie CAMPBELL ('70).
They actually Volunteered... we were all 2 Year "Regular

teach us how to fire and clean weapons as our Life skills.
Vietnam Recon Infantry for me. Utmost respect for you guys

Jackie and I are visiting my 92 year old aunt in Louisville
KY. She is the last of the 6 Wheatley sisters. A finer family
group of women would be hard to find. They raised their
children well to be successful in life. They lived long and
supported each other. Their mother met an early tragic death
when her dress caught fire while cooking. My mother was the
oldest and took over. TB was rampant in those days and one
sister died from it and our mother survived a 4 year battle
with it and later had twins, Mike and Mark. Mike and Mark are
on Maui with their wives at this writing.
Aunt Mary married George Myers who lived at 208 Casey across
the ally from our house at 206. In studying family histories
we find 2 frequent tragedies. Death from cooking at fireplaces
and old wood stoves, and blindness caused by splashed lye into
children's eyes while making soap.
My wife Jackie is an accomplished Genealogist. She would rate
high on an experts scale.
We are digging through the Kentucky State Archives for what
may be her last massive genealogy project. The Mattingly Book.
She, and at times with me, has been on this part time for
years. She is tenacious in digging up information. She has
made several trips to the east coast by herself and more with
me. I am going through State and County books and Historical
Society times and files marking any Mattingly info. She
selects or rejects what may be useful. I have copied countless
old photos. She has us back in a direct line to the UK in the
1500s. The first Mattingly landed with Lord Baltimore in what
is now Maryland and migrated west following Daniel Boone
through the Cumberland Gap ending up in western KY. So what we
are finding now are the small bits and pieces that make her
final results incredible. We have walked through countless
cemeteries and made rubbings of grave markers in a dozen
states. This kind of project bounces between fun and
exhaustion. She has done a number of these 1/2 inch thick
books. I suspect this may be her last. I have doubts she would
do another. Her own family book is not finished. They are an
incredible amount of work, time and travel. The cost is
horrendous. Along with investigation expense printing alone
can be over $100 per book. Her results are first class, full
color, bound books. For one of her projects we traveled to
Rome Italy and got into the High Security Library where they
have ancient books and writings going back a thousand years.
Getting in takes a couple of hours the first time. Detailed
applications requiring hours to verify and then 2 stages of
security and a short lecture. You sit in a booth in front of a
monitor camera with white gloves and they bring the book/paper
to you. No pens, pencils or cameras allowed. We did get a
couple of pictures with an I phone. The book of that day was
on some theorem in mathematics and was written in the early
1500s. The author/mathematician was an ancient relative of one
of our best friends. Jackie did books for both the man and his
wife's families. I may have covered some of this before and so
this is enough.
The highlight of our day was finding a large, spotlessly
clean, Chinese Buffet that had huge selections of great food
and charged only $7.69 each for dinner! It is on the hiway
going into Lexington from Louisville. The cost in Tacoma would
be $14 to $17 each. In Anchorage the cost is $24 each w/senior
discount for the same fare. We will eat there again this
Saturday PM.
I spotted a bright yellow Bomber tee shirt at the Nashville
airport. We were leaving for a rental car and he was on the
other side of the security line. I resisted calling out "Hey
Bomber!" to get his attention. :)

Re: Tri-City Herald Subscription Follow-Up
After negotiating a lower rate for my annual subscription
rate on the phone in October ($306.50) I was discussing the
experience with Dick CARTMELL ('73). He mentioned I should go
to the Tri-City Herald office in downtown Kennewick for a
more favorable rate. I believe that was the suggestion from
a Sandstrom entry a couple of months back as well when the
newspaper was a topic for a few days. I stopped by on Friday
and without any negotiating the person at the front desk gave
me a rate of $189.50. When I asked why there were different
rates she only said that their office had more flexibility in
pricing. It was evident this was not the first time she had
been asked this question. My father-in-law's published renewal
rate was over $400 at one time. What a crazy system to charge
different customers different prices for the same service. I'm
not even sure if it is legal. In the end it's Bombers helping
Bombers save money.

Re: Herald Subscriptions
Our subscription rate for the Herald that we just renewed
last month is $166. Can anybody beat that?
You do have to go to the Kennewick office or just contact
them on the phone like I did to get a good rate. I originally
called the California 800 number and got no empathy and was
quoted a huge subscription rate.
Since Movie Pass is horrible now and probably going out of
business, I found a way to beat the system. I get into the
theater by getting a free Movie Pass ticket to one of their
crappy "allowable" movies then I go to another movie at the
theater with a similar time. Really easy, especially if you
are retired and can go to matinees. I talked to the staff at
the theater and they don't even care if you do that. They are
fed up with Movie Pass also. In fact, they thought it was a
great scheme.

Re: Memories at the Museum
On a trip to the Oregon coast we visited a museum and they
had, I think it is called a cultivator. It had a big wheel
in front and two handles in the back, with some little blades
behind the wheel. Makes working your garden easier I guess. We
didn't have one, the old man just told me to grab a hoe and
get to work. I remember seeing them, lot of people we knew had
them, I think more people had gardens back then. They also had
a display of a family having a picnic at the beach with their
'50s station wagon and on the picnic table was a thermos jug.
It had a pour spout on the top and was metal finished in green
hammer-tone paint. Ours was brown and the spout was near the
bottom, but I remember people who had that exact same jug. On
the way out I told the lady working there about them and said,
"When I go to museums and see things that I remember being in
regular use..."
Right now, at the Kennewick Library, the one on 1620 S. Union
Street in the entry between the doors in a glass display case
they have a display from the East Benton County Museum. I
remember almost all of them!!! They have a copy of "Escort"
c.1971 published monthly was a guide to Tri-City entertainment
and Services. I don't remember that. A Church's grape juice
bottle. I worked two summers for Welch's grape juice, one day
we would make Churche's and the next day Welch's, same bottle,
same juice, just different label and higher price for Welch's.
S&H Green Stamp book. A fountain pen that uses the ink
cartridge, I remember when they came out about 1957 or so and
also remember the older ones you filled from a bottle of ink
using a little lever on the side of the pen. They had 45
records and CDs, a small cassette player, and recorder for
mini cassettes. I guess this means my car is also obsolete, it
plays radio or cassette, or CD, but no USB port. A very old
typewriter. I have two manual typewriters and an electronic
one I bought for my daughter for school work. It could only
store a few documents and was really hard to make corrections
as you had to watch the display on a little screen and go
forward, if you missed the correction you could not go
backwards, so you had to finish making corrections going
forward, then go back and start again. Once she finished
quite late and I told her to go to sleep and I would make the
corrections for her. I never got done and she had to turn it
in with some of the corrections not being made. So much easier
and faster with a computer. I don't know what to do with those
typewriters, I need the space more, so guess will have to take
them to the scrap yard, I know Goodwill will not take them.
They have a wireless phone, I still have two of them in my
house. A Black & White video camera. I remember about 1971
looking at that kind or setup in the Navy Exchange, but did
not look much at the camera, just at the reel to reel video
tape recorder and the TV it was playing on. I can go them
one better than that, I still have an old plastic wind-up 8mm
movie camera I bought at Pasco Goodwill for 50 cents. It used
a reel of film with sprocket holes on each side so you shot
one side, then flipped it to get the other side exposed. When
they developed it they split the reel. I didn't know if it
would work or not so I only bought one reel to shoot at the
1968 Atomic Cup. Since you had to flip the film reel you
really need to keep track of how many times you used it or you
would get double exposure film-don't ask me how I know this!!!
They also display an old rotary dial phone; heck, I remember
phones that didn't have a dial at all, you picked up the
receiver and the operator said, "Number Please!"
I have an old outside TV antenna maybe I could donate-very
good condition, only used it about a year. I'm sure those TV
waves hitting it did not wear it out too much.

-Dennis HAMMER ('64) ~ It always bugged me that they changed

My life was spent as the "older" brother... or as some would
say "first born" I'm sure there are all kinda studies out

I was off and on a good and bad brother... early pretty
good... Mom always said when I got "cool" I stopped being a
good brother... I did give him a ride to A&W one time. We were
very close when in college and then that was lost... I did
fly him and put him up for R2K... but the rest is just one of
those "famblie stories" many famblies have... I do know that
Mom and Dad always like Terry DAVIS Knox ('65) best so not

WOW! Classmate and fellow/former Davison street neighbor,
Peter TURPING ('70) could go work for Scott Boros negotiating
MLB players' contracts!
A near 40% reduction in Tri-City Herald rate! Pete and I have
been pals since we Francos moved into 1909 Davison just prior
to kindergarten (Jefferson) back in 1957. As a personal favor
I am sure he will not mind renegotiating some charges I have
with King County (property taxes), Puget Sound Energy,
Republic whatever (our garbage company), Efinity, Sprint and
the Federal Communications Commission (radio station license).
A 40% reduction in all those would put me in tall cotton (no,

When you finish those I will have a few more for you.
Always good to keep busy after retirement!

Re: Recovery for Rose Journey
I received the following request for help from someone
representing themselves a Richland Bomber Alumni. The request
was sent to my personal e-mail. On the surface it would seem
to deserve my support. That said when I went to the GoFundMe
site and plugged in (Rose's Recovery Journey) I can't find any
mention of this fund. In addition the initial request never
mentioned a name of the sender nor the last name of Rose.
Question is does anyone know who made the request?

Re: TV antennas
I was paying DISH $10 a month for four local channels. I
happened to have two outdoor antennas I'd never used, so I
told DISH I wanted to cancel my local channels. They offered
me a free over-the-air tuner (I was complaining about several
problems I was having with DISH and threatened to go to
DirectTV), which displays the same information as other DISH
channels on the program guide. I hooked up my two outdoor
antennas on the roof, one pointed to Tucson and one to Phoenix
transmitters on South Mountain, and I get over 70 channels for
free instead of four for $10/month.
One summer we had northern lights visible in Richland for
several nights. We only had UHF TV stations at the time, but
I happened to tune to a VHF channel and received a station -
from North Dakota. I watched all day, and channels faded in
and out from all over the eastern US and Canada during the
sunspot activity.
Getting network news in Hawaii was something of an adventure
before the advent of satellites. Stations would fly in the
network news from California, which would air anytime between
10PM and 3AM, depending on which plane the reels were on. When
the first ground station was built on Oahu (with a giant dish
antenna) for telephone transmissions, local stations began
receiving the top network news item via satellite - ComSat had
to notify Hawaiian Telephone in advance, because it took 600
phone circuits to transmit one TV signal. Of course, with more
satellites we began getting the entire national news programs.
Re: Drive-in fast foods
During the summer my family often went to drive-in movies on
Fridays. We'd always stop at A&W for hamburgers and root beer.
I loved the 'daddy,' 'mommy' and 'baby' burgers and root beer
mugs. The mugs were kept in the freezer and came with a frost
of root beer on the rims. Burgers were a real treat to me back
then. The only times I got to eat burgers every day was when
we were on vacations. We always looked for restaurants with
"café" in the name.

Re: NOTHING to do with Bombers -- maybe Richland
This came from a Bomber back in 2016 and I just re-read and
thought I'd share with alla you old Bombers:
Re: A Retiree's Last Trip To Costco
Yesterday I was at Costco buying a large bag of Purina dog
chow for my loyal pet, Necco, the Wonder Dog, which weighs 191
lbs. I was in the check-out line when a woman behind me asked
if I had a dog.
What did she think I had an elephant?
So because I'm retired and have little to do, on impulse I
told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the
Purina Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn't, because
I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 50
pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes
coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms.
I told her that it was essentially a Perfect Diet and that the
way that it works is, to load your jacket pockets with Purina
Nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry.
The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I
was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that
practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my
story.)
Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care, because
the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stopped to pee on a
fire hydrant and a car hit me.
I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack
he was laughing so hard.
Costco won't let me shop there anymore. Better watch what you
ask retired people. They have all the time in the world to
think of crazy things to say. Forward this (especially) to all
your retired friends.. it will be their laugh for the day.

Well, it's all over with for a while. Quite possibly there
are those turning purple with rage because of the result. But,
remember this, the winners are usually the best candidates
money can buy.
But enough of that fol-de-rol. Let's focus on the task at
hand, which is remembering the birthdays of an older Bomber
Babe and a younger Bomber. Sort of remember her from school;
she kept denying that she was related to her brother ('52) who
seemed to have fallen in with "evil companions". He, I met as
a result of Club 40. Or perhaps it was at a Bomber Lunch
somewhere.
A tip of the ol' propeller beanie and a "Happy Birthday!" to
Marilyn "Em" DeVINE ('52) and Dan HAGGARD ('57) on this day of
some importance to them. They are nice people and I hope there

Re: TV antennas
When we moved from a "B" house in Richland to an apartment in
Kennewick we were not allowed to put up antennas, could have
either a satellite dish or cable. I bought a double bow tie
indoor antenna and used for TVs and VCR rabbit ears adding
thin copper wire running around the ceiling, sometimes with
aluminum foil added. Even brought in my small outdoor antenna
and set it up in storage area or in the kitchen which did not
even work as well. You could go to the edge of the parking lot
and see the antennas on the hill, but the hill we were on and
the apartment buildings blocked the signal. When they started
changing to HD broadcasting I got no reception. I remembered
my dad had tried to make an antenna from a design in Popular
Mechanics, but it didn't work for him. I got on the internet
and found lots of plans for antennas. Making TV antennas
almost became a hobby. The first one was sort of bow tie
antenna with four sets of whiskers and got very good
reception. Eventually I made four antennas, I turned that
first one into one with two sets of bow ties side by side,
another one with four sets of whiskers but 12 inches long
instead of 9. A gray-hoverman one was really simple and only
has two elements starting straight out an zig-zaging down then
straight. Really easy to make and I did it with what was left
over of the 100 feet of rather stiff wire I bought that was
made for holding up suspended ceilings. Then I made a little
fractal antenna using very thin copper wire. That worked quite
well but did not always get the signal in that location. Works
great in this location in my daughter's room, but don't think
she ever uses it. I just made them with wood frames so would
have to use something else like plastic pipe for outdoor use
and there are several other designs I would like to try if I
ever do it again.
The point is; all of the antennas that I built work better
than the store bought one.

As I recall, the A&W Burger family consisted of a Papa, Mama,
Baby and Teen Burgers. The Teen was near the size of a Papa,
but had bacon on it. I think that about the same time,
Denny's announced a "British" burger which had cheese and
two strips of bacon. The bacon formed what might have been
an interpretation of a St. Andrews cross.
And speaking of burgers, today we celebrate the birthday of a
Bomber Babe whom I went to school with. Didn't notice her much
until I started hanging out at the broadcast trailer at the
back of By's parking lot. She was the red-head keeping things
moving inside By's. She's been sort of a mover and shaker (pun
intended) most of her life.

rocking always full of cars and youngsters having a great time
dancing and enjoying each other every once on in a while a
good fight was going on across the street in the field but
By's was the place to be... then Tastee Freeze came along and
that was another hang out for the youth those were the good

every Friday night as we just lived a few houses away on

Re: Safety and the Dark
It was past dusk, Hanford was creating more than average
traffic on Jadwin. We were a couple of blocks from Chief Jo
when we saw red reflections striking stationary surfaces.
Approaching the source there were emergency response vehicles
taking up the intersection by the school, there was one
personal car in that mix. Folks were viewing the scene and
others walking hurriedly to that spot of asphalt. It got me to
thinking.
While driving in the dark it is very apparent to me only a few
pedestrians are prepared to walk at that time. Dark clothes
& not walking on the sidewalk and perhaps coupled with the
attitude: it's okay nothing will happen to me. Hey, I did and
thought that way back in the day. Grown up and with our 1st
child things changed, more than my safety at stake. Prepare
by wearing reflective or at least light colored clothes. That
should extend to outerwear. Walk with a flashlight on the
traffic side of your body. Stay on the sidewalk and no
earbuds, you need to hear as well as see your situation. This
is what I'm telling my grandchildren. I'm not foolish enough
to think a talk will prevent all harm but what I say could
make a difference.
More on the description, it was Tuesday eve, two children were
struck, one is in Spokane with head trauma. I cannot imagine
that pain, nor do I want to.

I'm a day or two late wishing a happy birthday to my best male
high school friend, Ed WOOD ('62). We met in seventh grade at
Carmichael. We belonged to the science club and the school's
amateur radio club. I don't recall the club's call sign, but
mine was K7HSG, or "King of Seven High School Girls," as
Aubrey Clayton, the club adviser, called me. (Actually, three
was the most I ever had at one time.) Ed introduced me to
Mexican music. I was always envious of him for one thing - he
had a cute little sister ('66). I always wanted one, but got
three brothers instead.
I started dating in seventh grade, but I think it took Ed a
bit longer. When he did discover girls we occasionally double-
dated, once to a drive-in movie and at least a couple of times
to out-of-town sports events. He always had the same date,
I usually had different ones. I lost track of him after
graduation. I missed him for many years, but he eventually
caught up with me. Ed was always my best male friend; I never
found anyone to replace him. So thanks, Ed, for an enduring
friendship. I hope your day was special.

Re: Safety and the Dark
Just two nights ago (three when you read this) I was driving
home in the dark on a street that had two lanes and a turn
lane. I was coming down a hill and in the oncoming lane, so
this would be two lanes to the left I thought I saw a bit of
a dark shadow, and there were two people just across on the
sidewalk on my right, one being a child. I slowed down to
a stop and put my brights on and sure enough young man all
dressed in black (maybe it was Johnny Cash) was there in the
middle of the oncoming lane. I let him cross to join what was
probably wife and child, but I could barely see him. They were
not in a cross walk, but it is a fair distance either way to a
crosswalk. Got me to thinking the coat I usually wear is long
black leather, and my other coats are also dark. Maybe I
should think about getting something like a trench coat, long
and tan.
The next night I went out and made two stops. Started the car
up to come home and something didn't look right, the right
headlight was on a car parked in front of me, but the left one
went largely into empty space. I got out and checked and sure
enough, left headlight was out. I'm sure it was working the
night before as I think I can tell right away if one is out
and I park in front of a wall so if one is out it is quite
obvious. Not wanting to pay part store prices (they sure want
a lot for even little bitty regular old bulbs these days) and
not wanting to wait for Amazon to deliver, I fixed it with a
bulb from another car that is not being used. So now I have
two old bulbs; I can convert to LED bulbs, the lower priced
ones, at Amazon for about the same price as part store lights,
or just get regular halogen bulbs much cheaper at Amazon. Has
anyone had experience with converting headlights using halogen
bulbs to LED?
I once had a Cadillac El Dorado that had a fiber-optic light
monitor system. Fiber-optic cables ran from the lights to a
lens, Just above the rear window you could see in your rear
view mirror two little spots, if they were red, your tail
lights were on and working, if you stepped on the brake, they
got brighter, and if you put the signal on they blinked. Same
thing up front on each fender with three little lenses, high
beam, low beam and front signal. That way you could always
monitor your important outside lights. I really liked that,
wish they still put it on cars.

(11th month, 11th day, 11th hour when WWI ended)
$$ on a soldier's grave:
A coin left on a headstone lets the deceased soldier's family
know that somebody stopped by to pay their respects. Leaving a
penny means you visited. A nickel means you and the deceased
soldier trained at boot camp together. If you served with the
soldier, you leave a dime. A quarter is very significant
because it means that you were there when that soldier died.

I recently enjoyed a week in Hawaii with eldest daughter, Keri
Hubbard (lives in Alaska and keeps a Westfalia in Kona) and
when I returned, I had 93 messages in my inbox! Almost that
many notifications on Facebook. It is taking me a while to get
to all the Sandstorms. (Partly because I so unfortunately/
stupidly switched from DISH to Spectrum about 2 or 3 months
ago and I'm still having problems with that company. NOT worth
whatever money I may be saving!) Anyway, thank you to "AKA" ('54)
and David ('65) for the happy birthday wishes. And thank you
to Judy PEARSON Parker ('54) for the pictures of kids at the
Hi-Spot!! Nice memories from those years.

was still getting tomatoes a few days ago and all of a
sudden we have freezing nights. Lucky for me, high winds

I would have wished the Marines a Happy Birthday yesterday;
but, to paraphrase Douglas MacArthur: "The Marines have too
many birthdays."
However, they also fall under the category of Veterans whose
service we are honoring today. Back in my youth this was known
as Armistice Day, celebrating the end of Part I of a World
War. Part II ended in August of 1945. Since there are no
remaining veterans of that conflict our lovely congress
decided to change the name to Veteran's Day. Which probably
means the banks and the Post Office will be closed on the
morrow.
So much for the trivia. On this date in history Jerry BOYD
('52) and Patsy McGREGOR ('54) done went and got hitched.
According the latest rumors, they're still workin' at it.
Good going, guys.
And then, there are the birthdays of one Bomber Babe and
three Bombers. Somehow I was in school with all of them at
the same time. We didn't all graduate at the same time, but
that doesn't really count amongst Bombers, now does it?
A deep flourish of the ol' propeller beanie and a "Happy
Birthday!" to Bev COATES ('52). And a tip of that same beanie
and a "Happy Birthday!" to Jack SINDERSON ('53), Bob JOHNSON
('54) and Ted NETH ('55). May the deity of birthdays shine
his/her countenance upon on this day.

recent frosty nights have reduced the number of leaves

feared they'd croak and my insurance would get hit again... I
went through this a few years back with the hot water line...

Re: Veterans Day
My dad was in the Marines. He served twice, once in the 30s
as an embassy guard in Peking (now Beijing), China. He was an
amateur photographer and took lots of pictures, preserved in
albums that I looked at several times. Some of the black-and-
white pictures of China were hand-painted by Chinese artists.
I never dreamed I'd get to see some of the places he
photographed myself during my year teaching at Tianjin
University. Dad was drafted when WWII began - his discharge
papers had been lost in a fire. He had his copy of his
discharge, but he enlisted and served in the South Pacific
at Iwo Jima. The closest I came to being in the military was
being born on Parris Island, South Carolina, while Dad was in
the Marines. According to my mom, I owe my existence to the
IRS. Dad was away at a school for gun repairmen when April 15
was getting close. Mom sent him a letter saying not to worry -
she had done the taxes in his absence. Dad was worried she
didn't know how to do them, so he got a weekend pass to go
home to check her work. (She had done them correctly.) Anyway,
nine months later he got another tax deduction.
Re: G-mail
G-mail will no longer allow Microsoft Windows Live Mail 2012
to access my account. Google considers Mail 2012 to be an
"unprotected" app. I prefer to download my emails rather than
going to the Google website to read them. Farwell, gmail.
Re: TV antennas
DISH gave me a rectangular antenna stuck on the wall to go
with my OTA tuner. I wasn't sure at the time which wall to put
it on so I made a simple dipole antenna with #12 electrical
wire stapled to a stick and attached to a cable transformer.
I could turn the stick around while I watched the TV for the
direction I got the best picture. Lo-and-behold, the stick
antenna got more stations than the antenna DISH gave me. In
fact, it got more channels than the commercial antennas I put
up on the roof.
Thanks, Maren, for all your work publishing a daily
newsletter. I've never deleted an Alumni Sandstorm. After a
couple of months I move them to a storage folder (yes, I know
you archive them as well) in case I want to look up something
I recall.

at 11am, in his 1973 novel "Breakfast of Champions":
"It was during that minute in nineteen hundred
and eighteen, that millions upon millions of
human beings stopped butchering one another. I
have talked to old men who were on battlefields
during that minute. They have told me in one way
or another that the sudden silence was the Voice
of God. So we still have among us some men who
can remember when God spoke clearly to mankind."

Re: Web Based Email users (gmail)
I spent most of an hour on the phone with Kevin at NetAtlantic
(NA) this morning (11/12). NA is the outfit that actually
sends the Sandstorm to you every day -- or their SOFTWARE
sends it... but only AFTER I give it to them to send.
More than one or two gmail users have emailed me lately that
they didn't get their Sandstorm for more than one day. I've
simply told them to check their SPAM folder and the reports I
get back say BINGO! There they were... all of them. Today I
found out that we need to do more than just find them.
Think it's called deliverability. When there are several days
of SSs in your SPAM folder AND THEY ARE LEFT THERE it triggers
the Lyris software to mark the mail as SPAM AND to unsubscribe
you from the Alumni Sandstorm e-group.. It's kind of a vicious
circle. We need to go in there, open each SS that's in the
SPAM folder and mark it as NOT SPAM. If we don't do this, then
the Lyris software adds another email address - the software
looks at all gmail readers on our list and automatically
creates filters based on what we all do individually. Did I
explain that well? We are all kinda responsible to each other
for how we treat the incoming Sandstorm if it goes into the
SPAM folder.
If you accidently click that the SS is SPAM, that triggers the
Lyris software to UNSUBSCRIBE your email address. So, from now
on when one shows up as unsubscribed by the software, you
will get an email from me asking if you still want to stay on
the list. Respond YES and I'll get you back on the list.
And I contributed to everyone's gmail problem cuz there were
three SSs in my SPAM folder before I went looking for them. I
knew they were missing, but I had another copy, so I didn't
worry about it too much... and by leaving THREE in the SPAM
folder that triggered the software to think it really is SPAM
and dumped the SS in others' SPAM folders. If I had only
known...
Not sure where all this is going, but the whole gmail web
email is... well, another one of those things that got fixed
when it wasn't broken... so now it's -- IN MY OPINION -- all
messed up... junked up... windows in little windows and stuff
to click that was never there before and I don't like it...
oh, and the tiny TINY letters that I can;t read unless I
enlarge my screen. PITA... Going back to cheerful.com at least
they still forward everything like I want them to... like
gmail USED to do...

WARNING PASS ON TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW
DON'T PUSH 90# on your telephone - THIS IS BEING REQUESTED BY
IMPOSTERS WHO CLAIM THEY WORK FOR THE TELEPHONE COMPANY!
I dialed '0' to check this out and the operator confirmed that
this was correct. Please pass it on..
(l also checked out snopes.com and truthorfiction.com. &
checked with Verizon they also said it was true, so do not
dial 90# for anyone!!!!!)
BACKGROUND I received a telephone call last evening from an
individual identifying himself as an AT&T Service Technician
(could also be Telus) who was conducting a test on the
telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test I should
touch nine (9), zero (0), the pound sign (#), and then hang
up. Luckily, I was suspicious and refused.
Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by
pushing 90#, you give the requesting individual full access to
your telephone line, which enables them to place long distance
calls billed to your home phone number.
I was further informed that this scam has been originating
from many local jails/prisons. DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE...

Some of you may remember the 1983 bombing of a Marine barracks
in Beirut, killing 241 Marines.
Richland's own Sec of Defense ('68) was a Captain in the
Marines at the time. During one of our email exchanges I asked
where he was on "The Day". I thought perhaps he was in Beirut,
on site.
Seems not. He was assigned to the Pentagon at the time. He
told me it was the worst duty he'd ever had to do... go and
tell the parents of those Marines what happened to their son
or daughter.
I mention this because there's a picture making rounds on the

I'm always suspicious when someone says "I checked this on

business phones with a PBX system that uses 9 to access an

Happy birthday to Mickey Mouse (NAB). Steamboat Willie staring
Mickey Mouse was first shown November 18, 1928.
I had been telling people for years we made a trip to
California and I saw Disneyland a year after it opened. After
my mother died I brought her photos to my place. A year or two
ago was looking at what was written on the backs of some of
them and found out it was really only a month. Can't find it
now but I believe I still have the ticket for riding the
"Mark Twain" riverboat. They left you a pretty big chunk of
the ticket, about 2 1/2 inches by 5 inches and I think it
is in a small photo album I put together for a Cub Scouts project.

As for the leaves on the walnut tree, they are holding at 32%.
More to the point; on this date there was a wedding and a
birthday. The events did not occur to the same person. They
were separate and a few years apart.
So one person I thesped with married a fellow classmate.
That's the way of life. Let me know congratulate Treasure
ELDER ('54) and Gene BARFUSS ('53) on this momentous
occasion. Perhaps, if the fire situation subsists, they
might venture north next year as The Class of '54 will be
celebrating the 65th year since graduation.
As for the birthday boy, hey, I used to ride the bus with him
in from North Richland just so we could go to school. Now, a
tip of the ol' propeller beanie and a "Happy Birthday!" to

Re: Flying Car
In the 1950s there were all kinds of articles about the
flying cars they were developing and we soon would be
driving... er... flying. Now I have been wondering for
years... I don't see it parked in front of my house! Where is
my flying car?!?!?!?
Well now, I have a photo of the cover of the July, 1957
Popular Mechanics magazine I saved on my computer it looks
like in 2008. I remembered that issue because my dad had a
subscription. It also contains an article on the 1957
Oldsmobile and I used to have one, a convertible that I took
to car shows. I've seen that photo many times over those ten
years and just today I guess I saw it with new eyes because I
noticed something. It sure looks like those quadcopter drones
you see all the time these days!!! Maybe those guys back in
1957 knew what they were doing after all. Now they just need
to make them big enough for people to fly in them. Getting
self-driving cars now, wonder if my flying car will be self-
flying.

Re: Apple Cup Week
A WSU Graduate was headed west on I-90 to a MENSA Members
Meeting in Marysville. Coincidentally, a uw grad was going
from Seattle to a Coffee Consumption Convention in Coeur D'
Alene.
On an icy road, the cars collided near Cle Elum. When the
crushed cars came to rest, they were out of traffic and on
the side of the road. Amazingly, both drivers emerged from
their vehicles unscathed. They stood facing each other, one
wearing jeans and a Crimson and Gray hoodie and the other
dressed in slacks and a yellow and purple cardigan sweater.
Realizing how fortunate they were to survive the accident,
they ran to each other and embraced. Nobody said anything
about the Apple Cup or I-1631 or fire suppression or nerds
vs. herds or... None of those differences seemed to
matter.
The bear hug lasted longer than normal with the husky weeping
uncontrollably and the burly Coug patting his little friend's
back. As the u-dub partisan dried his tears, the Cougar Alum
discovered that his bottle of Walla Walla Washington Wine had
come through the crash intact. He offered the beverage to mr.
husky. As the Seattle-ite sipped some of Eastern Washington's
finest, his taste buds exploded. One sip led to another and
another and another, till finally he tipped the container
straight up and guzzled almost the whole bottle.
Now a little tipsy, the husky sat on the guard rail and
nudged his new Pullman buddy,
"Here finish what's left to celebrate our new friendship".
"Nah" said the smiling Coug, "I think I'll wait till after
the Cops get here".

adventures abroad), I entirely share your college football
view point. That said, now 48 years situated over here on
the gloomy side, with UW off-sprin, I have to be somewhat
accommodating about it. Actually, I have even met and become

Hadda nice chat with Jim FELDER ('67) today... unfortunately
he called my old office and of course they don't give out
personal numbers but did send me an email... korse, I've
grown so disgusted with AOL that I essentially just go
through and remove the junk and respond (late) to friendly
emails... I called him as he was leaving Vegas and heading
back up to the peninsula... We shared my experience in Forks
on the 4th of July one year... was just tooling through the
area and stopped at a place in Forks to eat... not sure what
time 4th of July Parades start there, but once started that
little two laner is shut down with the parade... had the same
experience in a couple of towns in Montana inna past as well.
Does the heart good! Actually marched on one of them when I
was still a Member of Oath Keepers before they went off the
rails... "Reach, teach and inspire" was our credo... trying
to inform Military, Peace Officers, and first responders of
the meaning of the prohibitions of the Bill of Rights...
nothing outlandish, though Bill O'Reilly once said we were
pretty radical for believing the words mean what they say...
anyway, our fearless leader decided he wanted to be some kind
of commando or something... before that, he had always taken
my advise... but kinda like reporting white color crime to
the DA... "who cares about tame stuff" Teaching fell by the
way-side and marching became the order of the day... all
charter members have left and only "yes-men" are left. Gee
I'm sorry... hope this isn't political... just why I left...
anyway, good to talk to Jim about old friends like Kenny

Marine and a cute Bomber-babe in my sights... HAPPY BIRTHDAY,

Not much Husky-coug chatter here so I thought I would add
to the perplexing story (wine, hugging, crying?) from the
legendary Ray STEIN ('64).
In 1983 the legendary (not as legendary as Ray, he never
set foot in Pullman) coach Bear Bryant died. His wife of 48
years, Mary was extremely distraught. Her friends tried to
help her get on with her life but to no avail. She shocked
all those who knew her by announcing that after living in
Tuscaloosea for over 60 years she was moving out of town.
When she stated she needed to be as far away from major
college football as she could get Bama fans everywhere were
shocked to hear she was moving to Pullman.
I must add that although I am pulling for the Huskies, I
have no real nervousness about the outcome of the Apple Cup.
This is because I am a proud alum of the ONLY college
football program in Washington to actually win a national
championship. Eastern. And they are in it again.
I really think the Cougs should win, if they are ever going
to. Once every six games sounds about right.
Everyone have fun, be safe!

I trust there were no tryptophan overdoses amongst the
audience. And no one was killed or maimed during the early
morning hours of the "Black" Friday rush.
That is not the point of this missive. The main object is
to acknowledge that today is the anniversary of two fellow

married. And, please, no speculation as to why for they are
adjusting quite nicely.
Therefore, a "Happy Anniversary!" goes out to Jeanette DUNCAN

Re: Happy Birthday to a True Bomber
Over a weekend of gratefulness (and a difficult Apple Cup for
WSU Cougars), I am very grateful for the 60-year friendship
of my fellow Richland Bomber, WSU Cougar, jazz-lover, and
all-around good guy, Gary TURNER. I wish Gary a very Happy
Birthday! Enjoy some Columbia Valley wine and a slice of
Cougar Gold cheese! I toast you on your birthday from
(surprisingly cool) southern California!

fighting with the people who are supposed to patch the holes

Ya know, in my last missive I didn't mention ticket prices.
They are $10 a head ($8 for children, students and seniors).
Tickets are available at Runaway Art & Craft Studio at 311
Commercial SE, Salem (503) 881-6270 and at Books-N-Time, 210
N. Water, Suite B, Silverton (503) 874 4311. The Brush Creek
Playhouse is located at 11535 Silverton Road at the corner of
Brush Creek Road. If you think it looks like an old school
house, you would be correct. And, by the way, tickets may be
available at the door 30 minutes prior to the curtain.
Now, for the really important business. There are two Bombers
of my acquaintance; one I graduated with and the other who
just seemed to have crashed a party or two here and there.
One is a good fellow and the other the jury is still out on.
So, a tip of the ol' propeller beanie and a "Happy Birthday!"
to classmate Gene STEPHENS ('54), and the other guy, David
RIVERS ('65). The only way David would get to sit at the big
kids' table would be to crash the class of '70's party. He'd
have to sit with the chaperones.

Re: How 'bout them apples?
I've gotta second question, too. But first, on game-day Friday
I was headed west on SR 26 when I stopped at the SR 395
interchange rest stop. Bumped into two others eastbound and
headed together for Pullman, one in a red jacket and a Coug
hat, and the other in a purple sweatshirt and a Dawg hat. To
the second I said "at least you've got the right hat on (!),
but who's your sidekick?" Response: "We're really close and
agree on everything---except the Apple Cup."
Said I: "Looks like WSU has this one in the bag, but not if
we close down the passing game and then just chew up the
clock on the ground." Says the purple-hat guy with a glimmer
of hope: "Hey, I like you." The red hat guy fades out of the
picture somewhere.
So, my question: "wutza wazzu?"

Happy Holidays to all! My granddaughter and I went to Portland
Moda Center on Sat night and saw the Trans Siberian Orchestra
and it was amazing! The video screen and the pyro displays
along with the orchestra and singers were the best I've ever
seen. A friend of mine had invited me and then he had surgery
and wasn't able to go, so he gave me the tickets. I didn't
really know who they were, but I did recognize some of the
music. They were a rock band from the '90s and had played
their debut 20 years ago in Portland. The show had a Christmas
story theme and it was the best concert I've ever seen. If you
ever get a chance I would definitely recommend going to see
them!!
Now that we survived Black Friday and the early morning sock
sale at Fred Meyers, we can prepare for Christmas. Going to
see Oakridge Boys Christmas Concert at Chinook Winds next
weekend and looking forward to seeing them again.
My daughter, her boyfriend, my granddaughter, and grandson are
heading to Veracruz, Mexico today to visit his family and get
my grandson baptized, and I stayed home taking care of the cat
and the house. I will enjoy the "quiet time" while they are
gone.
Enjoy the Rest of the Year,

Re: David RIVERS' ('65) birthday
What can be said about this Bomber that hasn't already been
said? Yes... he's a Ring Tailed Tooter... yes... a Jr.
Gyrene... yes... he's Nevertowed... but those aren't our names
for him. We know him as part of our quite intellectual online
discussion group... which maintains only the highest standards
in subject matter... we know him as the supporter of all
RHS class reunions, especially ours... we know him as an
intelligent and unbiased commentator on today's political
scene (just kidding on unbiased, but he is intelligent!)...
we know him as a good sport at house parties, not complaining
about sleeping in an icy basement or on a very uncomfortable
hide-a-bed or wearing a Bomber Onesie or sitting up late to
watch Terry's latest flick... but most of all we know him as
our friend... whom we could call and he would be there anytime
and anywhere. Have a wonderful Birthday David RIVERS ('65)...
here's hopes that all plumbing, painting, hot rod problems
are non issues for at least a day! Go Celebrate!

Re: Gmail
I am so very frustrated right now with gmail that I could
chew nails. It USED to be easy to get around... Now they've
fixed it when it wasn't broken.
To all those who are having trouble with the Sandstorm going
to your SPAM folder. Go to your SPAM folder. Click on EACH
Sandstorm individually and click the NOT SPAM button.
THEN you need to do something that I can't figure out how to
tell you to do. You need to add sandstorm@richlandbombers.com
to your "white" list... or your OK list... or whatever it is
in gmail. I can't even find the address book. Maybe somebody
can tell everybody how to do that!!!
And here's another thought: NetAtlantic tells me that even if
the Sandstorm goes in your SPAM folder the software considers
it delivered. If I knew how to contact gmail, I'd contact
them and tell them that the Alumni Sandstorm is NOT SPA and
they need to STOP putting it in my SPAM folder. If anybody
figures out now to contact gmail, please let me know and I'll
pass it along. The EVERYBODY can write to gmail about this.
Re: Additional note from Kevin at NetAtlantic.
"I would recommend letting people know that if
they forward [The Sandstorm} to friends, to add a
note that if they click unsubscribe they will
only unsubscribe the person whom is forwarding
the message as they aren't subscribed to the list.'

Re: A Birthday in Lost Wages, Nevada
Today's Bomber Birthday goes out to a Bomber outpost in Lost
Wages, NV. Manned by a Marine of many talents and well stocked
with Bomber memorabilia, along with Rock & Roll memorabilia
and an endless supply of exclamation points. If they had a
Rock & Roll trivia contest, my money would be on him.
Just recently watched an old Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis movie
"Hollywood or Bust" from 1956. I had seen it in the theater
when it was new and again in the early '70s on TV. When they
arrived at Lost Wages, it sure was obvious how much that
place has changed since that movie was made; but then so has
Richland.
Hope those plumbers you hired least knew their stuff beyond
the basics of plumbing: "Pipe are round, water flows downhill,
and payday is on Friday." Hope they also used pipe where the
i.d. (inside diameter) is smaller than the o.d. (outside
diameter), because if they didn't, you will having the stuff
flowing around the outside of the pipe.
Happy Birthday to our Sandstorm Barrister, David RIVERS ('65).

Re: Tri-City Herald
A while back someone wrote in and related a story about the
Herald and getting a lower rate by going to their office in
Kennewick. After last year's fiasco and paying over $300, I
thought I would give it a shot.
This morning (11/27) I went to the office as my due date for
renewing the paper was fast approaching! I told the ladies in
the front office I wanted to renew my subscription to the
paper for the upcoming year. Last year, I negotiated them down
to something like $369 (can't remember what the initial bill
was), and I thought I had saved quite bit. Their posted price
in the paper for daily delivery and online is $25 per week.
That's $1,300 per year, if you multiply it out. I went to the
office and they said it would be $369 to renew for the year.
I told them I really couldn't afford paying that much as my
wife, Marsha GOSLIN Brehm ('65-RIP), had just passed away
last month and my monthly income was cut in half. She said how
sorry she was to hear about my wife and then said she could
renew it for $189.50! I said that I could handle that and
walked out saving almost $200 by driving to their office.
I thought I would pass this along to everyone mainly because
when you have a local "paper" that is 12 pages on Monday and
Tuesdays, it's certainly not worth $369 much less their quoted
$1,300 that is listed in the paper. I'm hoping others can save
some $$ by going to their office, too, especially this time of
the year.
Happy Holidays everyone!

It was with some considerable discomfort that this morning I
read about Brother RIVERS' ('65) tummy issue. Not sure if I
was more concerned that he was suffering from the malady or
that he wanted to discuss it in an open forum. Might not be
food poisoning at all, might only be that he had rediscovered
his secret stash of Halloween candy and hid the evidence. Kids
will do that, you know.
In that it has lasted longer than my romance with a certain
unnamed blonde ingenue from the GMC63, quite maybe he should
source some of the cure all from my "yute", Wool Wax creme. It
came in a green jar about the same size as a Circle K Big Gulp
and worked wonders on chapped lips, of which I always seem to
have about four. A couple of my Lewis & Clark class pictures
had me looking like a "Housewives of Orange County", wanna be.
I think it would also take the bluing off of a .22 and work
wonders on an old carburetor.
They still make that stuff at Kadlec?
