Read your new book "The Rail Queen." I bought it on Amazon's
kindle site as soon as you said it was available.
An excellent story. Stayed up until 2:30 a.m. one night
reading. Needless to say, I enjoyed it immensely. Hurry and
write another book.

ANGEL TRILOGY:
1.Angel of the Gold Rush
2.Angel's Daughter
3.Legacy of Angels

4. Light On A Distant Hill

Re: Grandson
My grandson, Cameron JENKINS ('16), is attending the
University of Jamestown in Jamestown ,North Dakota. When
I spoke with him yesterday (1/29) he told me it was -20º
outside and all classes had been cancelled for that day. He
has his truck plugged in (block heater) and wasn't going
anywhere so he won't try to start it until it warms up. The
cafeteria is open for a time so the kids can get food, but
they are advised to stay in the dorms. This morning (1/30)
when I checked it was -32º and classes were again cancelled.
It is supposed to start warming up tomorrow, so hopefully he
can get back into his schedule.
It was cold here in Richland yesterday, but at 36º for a high
temp it seems like a heat wave to Cameron.
On another note, my granddaughter, Sydney JENKINS ('19),
has signed a letter of intent to attend Baker University in
Baldwin City, Kansas next fall. She will play volleyball as
an athletic freshman and academic junior due to her AA from
CBC. She will study exercise science and nutrition.
It will be hard to have both of my grandkids so far away,
but they both have to spread their wings. I miss watching
Cameron play baseball and now I'll miss seeing Sydney play
volleyball. Thank goodness both schools stream the games so I
can keep up with them. It's not the same as being there, but
I'll take what I can. At least Cameron will play summer ball
with the Highline Bears out of Seattle (White Center) again
this year so we will be able to go to many of the games.
Bomber cheers!

Seeing Shirley COLLINGS Haskins' ('66) post about the 40th
anniversary of the 1979 Bomber basketball team's state
championship brought back good memories.
I attended the semi-final game against Garfield, the odds-on
favorite to win the championship. Garfield ran a full-court
press all game long, every game that year, and with their
quickness and talent had demolished opponents during the
regular season: teams had difficulty even getting the ball
over the half court line as Garfield shuttled in fresh
players, each one as good as the one he replaced. I'd seem
them play a couple of times, and wasn't confident about
Richland's chances. Arriving a little late, just before the
game started, I grabbed a seat on the Garfield side so I
wouldn't miss the tip-off. Garfield began the game with their
usual press, but something unusual happened to them; a Bomber
would inbound the ball, and with two, three, four quick
passes and a minimum of dribbling the ball would go in the
hoop. This happened over and over. I stayed on the Garfield
side, enjoying the gasps and grumbling surrounding me: my
favorite moment came when a black man sitting just behind me,
seeing what was happening to his team, said to another guy
beside him, in awe, "Damn, these guys are good!". And they
were. Richland, of course, went on to win the game and beat
Pasco the next night for the championship, but that game
seemed anti-climactic; I believe it was the fourth time
Pasco lost to the Bombers that year. I was twelve in '58 [for
Bombers first state championship title], and never saw the
[Championship] '72 team play, but it's hard to believe that
either was better than the '79 group. Those guys remain the
best HS basketball team I've ever seen...

All of the effort that went into determining the best Bomber
basketball team of all time could have been redirected to a
more useful purpose if they would only have dropped a dime
and called Roger FISHBACK ('62). Lord knows he's seen more
games than anyone else, probably only missing a handful over
the last fifty years and no doubt could tell you the score of
those.
With all the changes in training, year round programs and
everyone getting taller, we probably haven't seen the "Best".
The '58 team had some pretty amazing two and three sport
athletes. If the two teams were to play, I'd put my money on
the '79ers as the '57-'58 players are all in their late
70s.
There was some conversation earlier in the month about Johnny
"Tarzan" Weissmuller, who won gold at the '28 Olympics in the
100 free. His time would be several seconds shy of a Girl's
High School Record today

Hello, Alumni Sandstormers
First, Chuck WITTEBORT's ('61wb) memories of the 1300 block
of McPherson sure ring true for me. We got our first TV set
in time for the World Series in 1953 (if my memory is
correct). My dad, also Joe, was a big baseball fan, and he
took some time off from work in the 300 Area to watch
baseball on TV. He loved it, even with the grainy 13 inch
black-and-white screen.
Chuck's family (at 1315 McPherson) and mine (at 1319) were
great friends, and my dad and mom Chris spent time with
Chuck's parents. Chuck and I and other kids in the
neighborhood defended our snow forts, built in the setback
from McPherson in mid-block. Kids from the CROSS family, the
Dreher family, and the MILLER family, all of nearly the same
age, joined Chuck and Alvin NALL in winter play, summer bike
rides, and chasing the mosquito spray jeep. How did we
survive childhood, breathing DDT and oil smoke? Across the
street were the LATTIN family, the HASKINS family, and a
young guy who fell out of a tree and broke his arm. His name
escapes me.
Very nice to have the memories emerge. Thanks, Chuck, and
warmest and best wishes.
One more quick item, and that's to acknowledge belatedly the
January 27 birthday of old friend (should it read 'long-
time' friend, and we can just skip the age business?) Mary
Lou WATKINS Rehbeck, class of 1963. She shares that sacred
date with Wolfgang Mozart, although he was a bit older.
The days are slowly getting longer. We've had a mild January
in Olympia, and I managed to ride on the New Year's bike club
event, and got out several other times as well. Mary and I
are on our way to Bend for some XC skiing on Sunday. We'll be
gone 11 days, and miss one Italian language class, but the
teacher gave us some "compiti" (homework). We're working to
improve our very rudimentary skills for another trip this
spring and summer.
Greetings to all.

I, too, was shocked to read of the Larry's passing! We lived
across the street from each other on Benham when I was in the
8th grade. He, actually was out of the house when we moved

They were 6 months old at the time. Larry would pop in

many plans for their future.

You lived very close to my family at 1306 Symons. Your talk
of defending your snowball fort reminded me of an incident
of defending our Christmas tree fort. The kids in the
neighborhood to include Glen ROSE ('58), Sonny and Woody
MORGAN, and probably the TADLOCK's built a really nice fort
in our back yard. And, as I remember, our back yard was
fenced. Well, I was "home alone" and a number of boys (Seemed
like 10 or 20) raided our fort! I heard them and went running
out. They slung a tree and hit me in the head with the trunk.
Fortunately our neighbor, Mrs. Shook, saw it happen and ran
out and got me. She then called my father at work and he came
home and took me to the hospital. I had a concussion. I never
did know for sure who the boys were but was told they were
from the 1300 block on the west side of Thayer. Not one of
them offered me help, they ran off!!

I too have a vague recollection of a theater in North
Richland.
My theater story was around 1946, when my little sister stood
in a very long line. By the time we got to the box office,
the cost of a ticket had increased beyond what I had money
for. I noticed the sign that stated, "Babies in arms are
free." I picked up my four-year-old sister and paid for my
ticket. The box office attendant just smiled. She could have
turned us away.

stack of Bibles that he cannot remember ever crashing your
Christmas tree fort and hitting you in the head, causing
a concussion! I know him pretty well after 56+ years of
marriage, and I have to say he doesn't seem like the type
who would do such a thing. Although... boys will be boys.
We could blame it on the Blankenships next door or the
Greenhalls in Perry Court. Probably should begin an FBI
investigation. Sad, very sad.
Re: Larry MATTINGLY ('60-RIP)
I feel that I have known Larry forever. It was a shock to
open the Sandstorm the other day and see that he passed. He,
Howard KIRZ ('60-R.I.P.) and I were in charge of the picnic
for our 50 year class reunion in the park. Larry very happily
volunteered to put together a fireworks show over the
Columbia River. Howard was frying hamburgers for everyone,
Janet FORBY ('60-R.I.P.) brought wine from her son's
vineyard, and we all sat on the bank of the Columbia and
watched Larry's show. It was beautiful. He really made it
extra special for us.
Just five years ago, Larry and Jackie, visited us when we
lived in Port Ludlow, WA. It was a pleasure to meet Jackie.
We spent most of the day talking and talking about old times.

Great, snow in February. Cars been parked all day, snow built
up on your windshield and no sweep to remove it. Its still
snowing as I go home the wipers are on keeping the snow off
and ice is building up on the sides. Familiar story to anyone
in winter driving conditions. Get home its still coming down
and gathering depth on the glass. Now this might be news to
probably no one but, I had a thought. The inside of the car
is warm and will melt snow as it lands on the glass. Making a
lot of work the next morning. So I decided to scrape the
glass a few hours after getting home. With any luck I'll just
have to sweep it off. But all bets are off if it warms up
then freezes. I'll wait on the email snowballs thrown
tomorrow from those who already knew this trick.

One nice thing from way back when, was that my '50 Chevy had
a hand choke and a hand throttle. The latter was useful as
an early form of cruise control. Fairly easy to start on
cold mornings, then set the throttle and turn on the heater/
defroster to full. After breakfast and another cup of coffee,
the car windows would be clear of frost and/or snow. Even
the hood would be snowless. And it wasn't far from the house
to a plowed street.
Of course if the snow was really deep, I could always trudge
to the bus stop and ride to the area bus lot. As the song

Re: Tarzan/Weissmulller again
I just found out that in the last Tarzan book he is in the
Royal Air Force in WWII. I thought that might be interesting
to read so I found full text for the book "Tarzan and 'The
Foreign Legion' " on the Protect Gutenberg Australia website
and started reading it. About 3/4 through it now. It does not
refer to the French Foreign Legion, he is actually an RAF
Colonel flying as an observer on an American B-24 Liberator
doing reconnaissance over Sumatra. They get shot down by the
Japanese and he has to use his "jungle smarts" to help the
survivors and rescue a Dutch girl. In chapter VII Tarzan, to
save the Dutch girl, jumps from a tree onto a tiger's back
and kills it with his knife. Then the pilot suddenly says,
"John Clayton, Lord Greystoke-Tarzan of the Apes."
Another one says. "Is dat Johnny Weissmuller?" I just thought
it was interesting that Edgar Rice Burroughs put the name of
actor Johnny Weissmuller into one of his Tarzan books; and he
was still alive to know of it.
Re: Searchlights
Used in war to spot aircraft. After the war as a form of
advertising to promote a movie premiere (20th Century Fox has
them on their logo) promote a grand opening, big sale, a
carnival, etc. The US ones were 60 inches in diameter with
a parabolic mirror and a carbon arc light putting out a
tremendous amount of light, something like 8,000,000 lumens,
and you could see for something like 30 miles depending on
the weather. They also had to have a big generator, usually
on a separate trailer. As a kid I have a vague memory of
being very close to one and was fascinated by it, but never
was able to be close to one again. My dad was not one to
chase down a searchlight, if he did would probably not do it
again; already did that once. So when I started driving at
the first opportunity, maybe at the Benton-Franklin County
Fair I did chase down one. Boy was I disappointed! All they
had was a little box with four little tubes with lights that
moved around. Never again chased down another searchlight.
Those WWII searchlights are very rare nowadays and the little
multi-beam ones they use today are not near as powerful. I
did find this video of "Gunny" R. Lee Ermey-RIP, from his
"Mail Call" show explaining them. What I thought most
interesting was they way they were remotely controlled and
could focus in on something that was spotted.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swZUC1PZKJI
He mentions the "Battle of Los Angles" in February 1942 when
they thought they were under attack by the Japanese. This
incident is what the movie "1941" loosely was based on. I do
know a lot of things in that movie are based on other real
things that happened, although not at that time, or in the
same way, or in the same place. It is known that Gen.
Stilwell did go to see the movie "Dumbo," Zoot Suit riots did
happen, someone on the East coast did have a gun mounted in
his yard, and a Japanese submarine commander fired a few
rounds at an oil refinery where he fell and thought he had
been embarrassed before the war.
Re: Larry MATTINGLY ('60-RIP)
I too was shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of
Larry. Seems sudden, from his posts it didn't seem as though
he had any health issues other than falling on the ice in an
earthquake after shock, and seemed to be planning things to
do in the future. Didn't know him personally, but we did
communicate by email on three or four subjects over the
years. He will be sorely missed.
I still miss Stan HOSACK ('64-RIP), the first Bomber from the
class of 1964 to pass away. He was in his second year at CBC,
as was a number of other Bombers including myself.

To: All Bombers
To All Bombers,
I saw Randy BUCHANAN's ('57) birthday in Monday's Sandstorm
edition and thought I'd pass this story along
Last Friday, his wife, Karen Moore Buchanan ('75) arranged a
surprise party for him. One interesting part of the story is
Karen had won a trip and a ride in a red Ferrari 360 Modena.
She used the sports car for an extended ride and a cover
story. Excess speed was reported but no witness came forward
to verify so a verdict of not guilty was handed down. Many of
the attendees were former 234-5Z and 222-S coworkers, Larry
"Mort" Shinker, Bill "L A" White and his wife Jan, Burt
Schilling, Wayne "Wheenie" Louck and his wife, to name a few.
Folks I haven't seen in years and it seemed everyone picked
up right where they left off. A back story to this starts
with the band "The Fire Sides" playing at the Town Crier in
February 1981 where Karen and Randy met! I tell you that
story to tell you this: the band playing at last Friday's
party was none other than "The Fire Sides". A bit of a
sentimental journey for them both when Karen took him from
the family table for a dance to what seemed to me their
favorite song. All very sweet. Happy 80th to my old shift
supervisor nearly 40 years ago.
Karen won the Ferrari trip on an on-line auction by IMPACT!
Compassion Center Tri-Cities. Karen enjoys supporting as it
is a faith based community resource. Attached is a photo of
the birthday boy from 1967 working at an open faced hood
preparing to open a glass ampule containing Plutonium
Nitrate. The photo was for the Hanford News as part of a
story about the Plutonium buy back program of the A.E.C. By
the color of the solution it looks to be something less than
200 gram per liter.

Re: Search Lights!
In 1947 I was living in Richmond, CA where a carnival went
into winter shut down. But they actually kept games and rides
up during all the time as many service men were just getting
back, and were using the carnival as a date site. I as a
little kid hung around running errands for free rides and
petty cash. They had a WWII search light that was turned on
each night. No Problem. Then one night I was left to watch it
as the carnie went off to eat or chase a girl whatever. It
had an automatic setting, No sooner had he left and I changed
to setting to manual. I was mostly using the light to scan
the nearby hills but an unfortunate Goodyear Blimp passed
over head and I turned the spot on them. After a few minutes
3 police cars came roaring up and taking dead aim on me. Till
they saw I was just a dumb kid. The Blimp had notified the
authorities and I was apprehended. Did any of you know it is
illegal to blind a pilot using spot lights? I was hauled to
the police station and threatened with many, many consequences.
Then I was let go with dire warning to never do that again.
Meanwhile the carnie was so involved with his girl :) he
never knew anything happened.
Ah memories!

and Jeff King,3-time winner Mitch Seavey, plus last year's
winner Norwegian Joar Whatever Norsky name. There at least 4

Missing from the line up again this year is 4 time winner
Dallas Seavey who is traveling to Norway with his 16-dog team
again for their long distance race.
Re: New This Year
Maximum number of dogs to start with is 14 -- used to be 16.
Re: Operation Straw
21 days before the start of the race it's "Operation
Straw"... Organized Volunteers move the straw that is needed
for each check point and for each team. It's the DOGS that
are important in the Iditarod and the straw is for the DOGS
to sleep on. The Iditarod Volunteer Air Force delivers the
straw so that it is where it needs to be well before the
start of the race.
Re: Trail Breakers
The Iditarod Trail Breakers are already starting to do what
they do... preparing their machines for the massive job
ahead. Recently, the crew made a quick run up to Puntilla
Lake.to pickup the 2 trail groomers, lay in a good trail, and
break some of the trail. The trail report is... Lots of snow

Re: Northwest weather
Awoke Saturday morning to hear the Washington State governor
had declared a weather related state-wide emergency, The
newscast also noted that our local [Montana] Whitefish
Mountain ski resort would not open today due to the weather,
something I can't recall happening over the thirty years
we've lived here, even in 1990 when we recorded a minus-35°
reading. I guess the minus-53° wind chill was the
difference.
Knowing how dangerous Seattle driving can be just on wet
days, I feel for those who will or must venture out in such
conditions. I also mused on the dumb luck some of us can
occasionally count on. Thursday we picked up a new (much
heavier) camper on a new dully F350 in Happy Valley, Oregon,
just south of Portland. We left Happy Valley under fairly
clear skies, windless conditions, and a balmy 41°. By the
time we hit I-84 into the Columbia Gorge there were white
caps on the river and the temperature had dropped into the
high teens. Still, the road was bare and dry and we figured
we could out run the storm we didn't expect until late
Friday, by which time we would be home.
Calling ahead for a room in Ritzville we continued through
light snow but with clear roads. When I let the dogs out at
6am on Friday it was snowing and, fearing the worst, we
forewent the house breakfast to hit the road. The road was
considerably worse that the previous day but 40 to 50 MPH
seemed acceptable to make it to Montana where we KNEW the
storm could not have arrived and we would be safe.
Going down the hill into Spokane there was nothing but red
brake lights ahead and the road was filled with people headed
for work. Halfway through Spokane we noted what appeared to
be a non-injury accident in the westbound lanes which had
stopped traffic in all three lanes. The traffic was backed
up for miles... I quit counting at "six" as I was more
interested in the low fuel light telling me it was time. I
could have filled up a few miles before Spokane but the price
was $3.35 for diesel and I needed about 30 gallons. I had
recalled a sub-three dollar price in Coeur D'Alene earlier in
the week and was gambling we could make. However, if we were
stopped for any time due to an accident in our lane we would
be in serious trouble. Oh, to save a few bucks.
We did make it to the east side of Coeur D'Alene were I found
diesel for $2.63 a gallon! 72-cents less per gallon? Go
figure. Entering Montana we found the storm was keeping up
with us the driving conditions were fairly perilous. Even the
long haul truckers were keeping a slow pace. A pickup pulling
a long RV trailer heading west was jack knifed across both
lanes stopping traffic on that side and we were, again
thankful we were going the right direction. Arriving home we
found our "plower" had already cleared our quarter-mile
drive.
We were lucky in every regard and hope others are too. Take
a moment to be thankful for those things that do go right in
your lives.

Re: Where are you?
I don't know where you are, but it could be right in
Richland. I am in Kennewick. Friday my wife and I went out
and bought little over $200 of food and cat food; you sure
don't get much for $200 these days. Then it snowed for
about 48 hours constantly. My problem was with drifts, maybe
because the wind was blowing form the N instead of the usual
SE. I had snow built up against the back door so you open it
and there is a wall of snow there, then a drift next to it
that measured 2 1/2 feet high. Had a heck of a time opening
the front screen door enough to squeeze out of it to start
shoveling.
http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Ham/190212_00.htm
I could not have opened the gate by the back door
because there was an even bigger drift built up against it.
So I almost literally got snowed in. There are two drifts on
each side of the cement pond that look to be 3 foot high. I
could have gone out the farthest back sliding door but would
still be stuck in the back yard. Just as I was finishing up
the mail lady came by and brought one piece of junk mail.
After that I opened the front screen door many times to try
to move the snow back so I could do it all over the next day.
Sunday I start shoveling snow again. and noticed right off
there are layers in the show. A layer of white snow, then a
layer of dirty snow, then another layer of white snow. Size
varies, if it was in an area of no drifts it might be one
inch of clean snow near the sidewalk, then an inch of dirty
snow, then two inches of clean snow. Where it drifted it
could be 8 or 9 inches of clean snow on top and then 3 or 4

Hanford had arial surveillance shortly after construction
started. I believe it ceased sometime before 1966. Last year
a friend of mine, Don Rokkann, loaned me his father's 1952

Iditaroe 47
16 days (and counting) before the start of the race.
"Operation Straw"was completed in one day so all the straw is
at each check point waiting for mushers to spread it on the
ground for their dogs to rest on. Operation Straw moved (by
Volunteer Iditarod Air Force planes) one bale of hay per team
per check point PLUS extra at each check point for any dogs
dropped from the race. Something like 23 check points and 53
mushers (this year) and that's a LOTTA hay!!
ALL dogs have to be micro chipped and each has a vet check
(including an EKG) before the race.
Re: Lance Mackey
The only person ever to win the Iditarod four years IN A ROW.
Lance has been absent for several years, but this year he's
back. I'll be watching him for sure.
Re: Dallas Seavey
Dallas was the youngest ever to START the Iditarod in 2005.
He was the youngest winner in 2012. His dad, Mitch, was the
oldest the following year. Dallas won in '14 '15, and '16. In
2017, he took 2nd (behind Mitch). After that 2017 race when
all dogs are tested 6 hours after the end of the race,
Dallas' dogs were found to have the pain medication tramadol.
The Iditarod Trail Committee (ITC) chose not to reveal his
name and only said "a top ten winner". Of course everyone
knew it was Dallas' dogs. Dallas had to complete his own
investigation because the ITC didn't. What his investigation
PROVED was something he knew -- that at the time his dogs
were tested, they could tell by the amount of Tramadol still
in their systems that it could not have been administerd by
Dallas. The ITC chose NOT to reveal that and clear Dallas'
name. Dallas withdrew from the 2018 race.
OK, in the very FIRST place, after 10 days on the trail with
very little sleep, 6 hours after the end of the Iditarod,
EVERY musher is SLEEPING! Their dogs are all taken care of by
volunteers at the Dog Lot in Nome till the musher is ready
to take them "home" (wherever that is). The ITC has now
increased security at all dog lots in every check point.
In 2018 Dallas took his team to Norway to race in their long
distance race - Finnmarksløpet (pronounced Finnmark, I THINK.
The ITC finally cleared Dallas of any/all responsibility -
the day AFTER he could have signed up for this year's
Iditarod... Iditarod's loss. He is Norway boound again this
year... Quite a process, too. More health stuff before the
race -- some for the race and some for the airlines -- all
have to be done a certain number of days before flying.
Dallas and one of his dog handlers moved 16 dogs... Each of
them took 4 dogs at a time - max number for the airlines -
to Norway... then flew back to AK to get 4 more. the 2nd
batch of 8 were delayed due to Seattle weather!! Imagine
that!
Iditarod starts 1st Saturday in March which is March 2, 2019.
Stay tuned...

Re: Memories
My parents moved out west from Missouri just after WWII
and I was about 8 months old. The move was made in a 1937
Chevrolet coup which I still remember a little. Bought a
1946 Chevy sedan probably in 1951 because my sister was
born in 1950 and they needed more room. So I don't have
much stuff that is old. Not too many photos even. They did
have some stuff shipped later like an old green wringer
washing machine. It had heavy enameled corrugated sides on
a round tub. I have seen a number of old washing machines
in museums, but never one even close to that one. In
Missouri it had a gasoline motor because the farm did not
have electricity. It was changed to an electric motor after
we moved West.
They bought an automatic machine in I think 1955 and it was
used for 43 years with my dad fixing it many times. Mom said
he had come back from Sears shortly before he died and said,
"Well, he can't get parts for it any more." It had what was
called a "Suds Saver." You could do a load of clothes and
pump the wash water into a deep sink and save your soap for
the next load. When I told my wife about it years ago she
said, "E-e-e-e-u, wash your clothes in dirty water!" All
these years no one seems to have heard of that feature and
have about the same reaction, but my parents used that
feature a lot. When I moved mom from WallaWalla back to
Tri-Cities she had someone she knew get some people together
to haul it, an old stove, and a non-working freezer out and
I later talked to one of them who said he had never seen a
washing machine before that had two outlets. Dad took the
agitator and wringer out of the old green machine and used it
as a tub to hold the soapy water. When we moved to Richland
it was left, probably not enough room in the two bedroom
prefab. Then when we moved to a "B" house it had double deep
sinks in the basement, and a single one in their WallaWalla
house when they retired.

When I was growing up we had a wringer washing machine and
two sinks for rinsing in our prefab kitchen. We always
started with scalding hot water and washed the white things
first, then colored and work clothes last. Many times we
would fill the washer more then once depending on what the
water looked like. Then of course we would hang our clothes
out in the sun and they always smelled ever so good. The
washers and dryers we have now are easier but I don't think
the clothes are any cleaner.

Well, we got ice then more snow overnight 2/13. It just won't
quit! Schools are cancelled again and my dentist appointment
has been cancelled as the office is closed.
Yesterday we had a break with sunshine and Lance ('60) and
I cleared some more of our driveway and made a path on the
sidewalks - but this AM it's time to start doing it all over
again. We have a berm down the middle so that two vehicles
can park. No room to park on the street (Snyder) as the
plow has put up a blockade - except where we cut it down to
allow Lance to get out with the truck (thank goodness for 4
wheel drive!). We are wondering where to put all of the snow
as we are running out of room. Our garage door has been out
of commission and was fixed yesterday, but my car will stay
inside until the weather breaks.
My daughter called to remind us to make sure our outside
HVAC unit is free from snow and ice. If the intakes get
blocked it will shut down the unit and might be expensive
to fix or replace. Our is okay as it is somewhat protected,
but we moved snow from around the base just to be safe.
I had to make a trek to the shed in our back yard to get
some shovels and it was harder than shoveling! I was
"wading" thru snow that was over my knees and that was in
the lower spots - it was hard work! Now the shovels are in
the garage where they will spend the rest of the winter!
Happy Valentine's Day to everyone. Stay safe and warm!

Iditarod 47
15 days to go
52 mushers - one withdrew: "personal health reasons"
Re: Musher Drop Bag Day
Pallets, labeled by checkpoint
Drop Bags arrive already labeled for musher and check point
and contain what dogs and humans need at each checkpoint.
Bags are unloaded and placed on a scale one at a time. A
volunteer calls out the checkpoint name and weight of the bag
for recording. Another volunteer lifts the bag and hauls it
to the correct checkpoint pallet. Yet another volunteer wraps
a full pallet to keep bags from sliding out and the pallet is
loaded to go to its next destination. Volunteer pilots of the
Iditarod Air Force will be taking supplies from Willow to
check points up to Rohn.
All kinds of things are sent ahead to check points.. Stuff as
simple as a good supply of lip balm to even a different
(lighter) sled for the latter part of the race. Some send
different sled runners. Many have plastic runners that slide
onto the sled runners -- with different kinds of plastic for
different snow conditions.
And to change sleds? Send new sled ahead to checkpoint...
then all mandatory equipment MUST fit into the new sled...
see picture of all that stuff from last year's race..
Meredith Maples in McGrath in 2018.
Re: Mandatory gear is listed in Rule 16
~Proper cold weather sleeping bag weighing a minimum of 5#
~Ax, head to weigh a minimum of 1-3/4 lbs., handle to be at
least 22" long.
~One operational pair of snowshoes with bindings, each
snowshoe to be at least 252 square inches..
~Any promotional material provided by the ITC.
~8 booties for each dog in the sled or in use.
~One operational cooker and pot capable of boiling at
least 3 gallons of water at one time.
~Vet notebook to be presented to the vet at each checkpoint.
~An adequate amount of fuel to bring 3 gallons of water to
a boil.
~Functional non-chafing harness for each dog in team and
a functional neckline.
When leaving a checkpoint adequate emergency dog food must be
on the sled. (This will be carried in addition to what you
carry for routine feeding and snacking.)
Re: Teacher on the Trail
There's a different "Teacher on the Trail" every year..
He/she has a classroom "back home" and the kids watch the
race on the internet. What an incredible teaching
opportunity!! Kids can learn how to plan for those drop bags
-- how much food to send ahead to which check point...
planned by # of calories each dog needs per mile... and the
distance between check points is calculated... are we getting
this complicated mathematical learning tool??
There's an entire section on the Iditarod.com website for the
Teacher on the Trail with links and projects and even
homework. If you are a teacher check it out.
Re: Starting position
The drawing for starting position is held at the musher's
banquet in Anchorage (I think) the Thursday before the race
begins.. which would make it 2/28 this year. 52 numbers are
placed in the "drawing Muckluck". Each musher draws a number
from there.
Stay tuned...

Re: Walla-Walla Gas show
Interesting, I had forgotten about my entry to the Sandstorm
yesterday, I had sent it to Maren months ago and told her
to use it to prevent a Sandstorm--NOT issue. When I saw it I
thought it had already been published. What is interesting
to me is the subject was about washing machines. I have been
going through my and my mother's stuff lately to see what
to save and what to get rid of. This morning I came across a
newspaper clipping my parents kept. Actually I had known of
it. It was from I assume the "WallaWalla Union-Bulletin."
"NATURAL GAS HEATING AND APPLIANCE SHOW!" "Yes, $1400 worth
of prizes will be given away during this wonderful show.
Don't miss it! You may win a basket brimful of fine
groceries... you may win a new gas range and water heater...
you're certain to enjoy every minute of the show!" The show
was put on by Cascade Natural Gas Fri, Sat, Sun, June 22, 23,
24, at the Walla-Walla Armory. I checked the calendar on the
internet and that has to be 1956. I remember, just barely,
going to that show. My parents went because they were
installing natural gas lines in Athena, OR where we lived at
the time. First prize is listed as: "A $345.00 gleaming-new
gas range and a $131.50 gas automatic water heater!" Wonder
what that is in today's money." Well, my parents won 1st
prize!!!!
OK, the rest of the story. For some reason the project to
bring natural gas to Athena was stopped and we never did
use those appliances. May 20, 1957, a category 5 Tornado went
through the Kansas City, MO suburb of Ruskin Heights, MO.
Actually it was one of a series of 57 tornados from May 19
thru 21. The worst one Ruskin Heights; 59 were killed by
the tornados, 44 of them in the Ruskin Heights tornado.
My father's younger brother and family had their house
completely demolished except for the floor and basement. My
dad decided to send him the stove. The water heater came in
a crate around it, but the stove did not so he built a crate
around it. He did not send him the water heater because he
thought his brother's was in the basement so he wouldn't need
it, however the water heater had been destroyed because it
was in the garage. Three years later we moved that water
heater to a farm house in Milton-Freewater, OR three miles
out of town. It was kept in the screened in back porch along
with the washing machine and the old green suds saving tub
made from the old washing machine I mentioned in yesterday's
post. Wind didn't blow through because the screens had some
sort of clear plastic coating. The cat however liked to made
his bed on top of that water heater. Three years later we
moved to 802 Stanton in Richland. Again we had to move that
water heater and it took up the storage place by the front
porch of the prefab. Three months later we moved to a "B"
house on McPherson and again had to move that stupid water
heater. The owner of the "B" house happened to have a
daughter and son-in-law who were building a house and my dad
finally found a buyer for that water heater.

rate of $149.00 for the river view and $129.00 for the sunset
view.
We are doing our best to reach our classmates with
information about the reunion. We are trying not to use

When we were in our ranch house on Olympia St. we were the
original family to occupy 2309, and my folks stayed there til
Spring, 1999 after my dad had died and my brother sold their
house.
Anyway, My first memories of our laundry room there are of
our wringer washer and using one of our 2 laundry sinks to
save water or suds? To be reused when mom used that machine.
We moved into that house in the spring of 1949, and I'm not
sure how long we had that washer; by '55(+_) I remember we
had a new washer and a dryer!!
I don't remember the make or model or color. But I do
remember the water being saved for another use.
One time I looked in that tub expecting water, and my
brother, Roy CROSS ('65) had filled the tub with water and it
was full of skinned lizards (red colored); think he called
them water dogs.

were not in the 2 bedroom ones, or maybe they had been taken
out and replaced with cabinets, or, we only lived there
3 months so I just might not remember. We always hung our
laundry on a clothes line, even in the winter when they would
freeze and get stiff. At one time they bought a fold up
wooden clothes rack for drying inside and one part on the
side broke right away. Dad made a replacement out of some
hardwood and it was the best part on that rack. When we moved
to the "B" house we had a clothes line in the basement. They
did not buy a dryer until after dad retired in 1977 and it
was a used one, maybe even from the late '50s.
Re: Free Stuff
If anyone has use for an old dryer that was still working
when I moved it, or have children, or grandchildren who need
one. It is located at the Richland Airport Mini-Storage. It
is a bit dirty now and when first started will probably smell
the burning dust on the dryer element, but that should go
away. Don't know how long it will last but you can't beat the
price. It will go to the first one to email me. I don't have
a pickup so you will have to come up with your own means of
transport and you don't need to get it until after the snow
goes. The way things go around here we could easily have a
Chinook, melt this snow all at once and then have flooding.
OK, after some thought, I decided that I also have two
refrigerators and a freezer to give away. When I went out to
storage I would plug them in for awhile so they wouldn't be
just sitting there. One refrigerator is on the small side and
will fit perfectly in the space of a "B" house with original
cabinets, which is why I bought that one. When it was
delivered they shifted the hinges over so it opens from the
right side. It can be shifted back. It is almond color. I
would give preference on that one not just who emails me
first but to someone with a "B" house or limited space.
Sorry, I don't want to drive to Richland and measure it right
now. That one was not used too many years and should give
good service. Next, the freezer is I think GE, rather small
sized white upright. The last one was my mom's and I had to
change the hinges on it so it also opens from the right
side. I didn't do the best job and the freezer door droops a
little, someone who knows what he is doing could adjust that,
maybe even I could. Someone might want to move them back to
the other side anyway. Also it has a drain under the freezer
part into a plastic hose running out the back to a pan where
it is supposed to evaporate. Guy who did maintenance at the
apartment house said it was either hose plugged or the "cold
control." The refrigerator in her apartment was pathetically
small so we moved it to place where washing machine would be
and brought hers up to use in the kitchen. Also after we got
her moved into assisted living we were not able to get it
cleaned out and food spoiled so it would have to be sprayed
down with bleach and cleaned. I just haven't been able to go
out there and spend the time to take care of that one, but it
was keeping things cold.

Fortunate, fortunate Dennis to have lived in Athena, Oregon.
If you have never been to this magical place, put it on your
radar. Not far from Milton-Freewater, an easy drive from the
Tri-Cities, Athena is like the legendary enchanted village of
Brigadoon in Scotland. Appearing only for a day every 100
years, it is timeless. In Athena, Scottish games are always
held on the weekend after the 4th of July. So put July 12-14
on your calendar this year. It is like stepping back in time;
and it is lovely. It's making me cry, right now, to think of
it.

We celebrated our 50th anniversary last week! We got married
in one of the worst snow storms the state had ever seen. The
bride and groom almost didn't make it to the wedding. The
best man was stuck in Cheney. I forget what travails the maid
of honor faced.
We made it into town at 3am, rehearsed at noon and married at
7. Our honeymoon in Spokane was impossible and we spent the
night in the new Red Lion in Pasco (which was not too bad).
So, then, the Washington Post ran an article a couple days
ago saying that this current snow event was the worst in 50
years...
It seems that storm decided to help us celebrate our golden.

Lots of posts triggered memories for me this last week. When
I stayed at my grandparents on the corner of Hunt and Symons,
I helped do wash in their "B" house basement with a wringer.
I was always warned to not get my fingers too close to the
rollers. It fascinated me and was fun to do the laundry. In
the middle of my grandparents basement was the coal furnace
and we would open the door and put a wire basket in to pop
popcorn. In our "F" house on Judson, I remember a concrete
double sink in the basement that the Bendix washer drained
into. The hose had a permanent hook in it so it didn't pop
out of the sink while draining. My dad took and developed
pictures and he would put trays on boards he laid over the
sinks. The coal furnace memories remind me of "Home Alone."
It seemed huge in the middle of the basement with tentacles
reaching upward in different directions to the wood vents
upstairs. My dad would board up the tiny room each time a
coal delivery was made. The boards were slipped into grooves
up to almost the top of the bin. We weren't allowed to put
coal in the furnace. There was a coal shovel for that and
mornings were spent in front of the kitchen stove with the
oven door open until the coal furnace warmed the house.

I found it interesting how many names mentioned in the tome,
I recognized as street names in Richland. Thayer, Abbott,

included and since General Goethals first and middle names
were George Washington, could he have made the list twice?
I've always heard that many of the original street names were
Army Corps of Engineer guys. Is there anywhere a list of who
the streets were named after? I'm pretty certain that Tinkle

Gaillard was pronounced "Gey-ard"

Re: Brigadoon ... er ... I mean Athena, OR
Yes, I remembered you emailed me after a previous post where
I mentioned I used to live in Athena. I looked it up, that
was five years and two weeks ago. I missed the last two, now
yearly class reunions , (we'll skip two long stories that
belong here) and had also planned to visit a lady I know
while living there. She is 98 years old and still living in
the same little house, so I decided if I wanted to see her
again maybe I should hurry up made a special trip to see her.
She said that no one in her family wanted anything when she
dies except for a table which was really nice, round a good
size but too big nice pedestal, probably oak--and everyone
wanted that. She said it had belonged to the town's doctor
before Dr. Alderman. I don't remember a doctor before Dr.
Alderman and think I started at least first grade with his
son. Just out of the blue she asked me if I was going to move
back to Athena. I told her I sure would like to, but my wife
just wouldn't hear of it.
My wife has never lived there, but she has ties to Athena
too. Her mother was born there, and her grandmother was born
there, the first of the family born after they moved west in
1876. She has talked about her great uncle who ran the movie
theater. He lived in an apartment upstairs in the movie
theater and she talks about getting to see movies for free
when visiting. In 2004 I got an email inviting me to the 40
year reunion. Don't know how they got my email address. As
their classes were so small they have their reunions three
graduating years at a time. That year they tried to find
everyone who had been a part those three classes, '63, '64,
and, '65 from kindergarten through graduation and they found
most of them. Again I was invited to the 50 year reunion.
This one started out in the front yard with a big circle of
everyone who were supposed to bring their lawn chairs. It was
the front yard of a friend who lived not quite a block away
when we were growing up. He inherited and restored his
uncle's large farm house and his yard is as big as a golf
course. He added a three car garage with lots of space
between the doors using the same architecture and clapboard
siding. It is connected to the house by a breezeway which he
says is "a breezeway in the Summer and a blow-hole in the
Winter." The original garage, built for a 1915 Buick, he
uses for his riding John Deere mower. We lost I think ten
classmates from those three years between the reunions so it
was decided we would have a reunion every year because some
of would probably not be here for the 60 year. The reunions
start Friday afternoon, the day before the parade and
Scottish games. After the parade they set up an area in the
park where the Scottish encampments are for the classmates
to visit.
I noticed you have a Celtic name. Do you wear the Clan
McLaughlin tartan when you go to the Scottish Games?
Brigadoon was just on TCM two or three days ago. I didn't
watch it again, but I did watch a few minutes of it.

Re: Snow on Easter Sunday
Weird, couple weeks ago I mentioned the book "Tarzan and the
'Foreign Legion.'" I found and started reading it online and
a day or two later my daughter wanted to go out to storage
and bring in some books to go through. She opened a box of
paperbacks which were packed in there so you could read the
back binding. Of all those books in there she chose to read
the tittle, "Tarzan and 'The Foreign Legion."
I said, "What?!?!?! I just started reading that online." I
didn't even remember anything about owning that book, I knew
I owned about the first six or so books in the series, but
don't think I purposely jumped forward and buy the last book
in the series. Seems like stuff like that has happened to me
several times lately. Maybe I had better start talking about
money.
In yesterday's post right at the end I complained about
stores already having Easter stuff on the shelves when there
was snow on the ground, then, early morning today I find some
old photos of me in the snow on Easter Day 1948 at Tollgate,
OR. Lot of snow there. Easter in 1948 was March 28. (I looked
it up) The 1948 flood started May 30, 1948 and flooded,
Richland, Kennewick, and Pasco on May 31, 1948. The flood
was caused by: "Heavy winter snowfall, a cooler than average
spring, and heavy rainfall combined with warm temperatures in
late May combine to send raging torrents of water down the
Columbia."

Since everyone's been writing about the cold northwest winter
I thought I'd recall an especially warm one. I worked my way
through Whitman College in WallaWalla as a typist for a
printing company. The printer asked if I'd stay a few days
during Christmas break, as this was a busy time for the
company. Many people liked to mail out Christmas or New
Year's letters to family and friends. When I was ready to go
home a couple of days before Christmas an unusual Chinook
wind blew through, melting all the snow around WallaWalla.
Every road out of town was under water, so no bus to
Richland. Fortunately, I had a student pass for the airline
that let me fly half price. The ticket from WallaWalla to
Pasco was actually cheaper than the bus ticket would have
been. The plane barely took off before it landed again at
the Pasco airport. [In SE Alaska, the term "puddle jumbers"
was used a lot. -Maren]
I got the student pass when I flew from WallaWalla to
Seattle to attend the annual meeting of the Washington
Education Association as the representative of the college's
Student National Education Association. It was my first plane
ride, so I was most excited. On the return trip I knew what
to expect. We'd take off from Boeing Field, next to the Puget
Sound, climb to altitude and turn east to go over the Cascade
mountains. Well, we did take off. But we didn't climb to
altitude. We continued flying right over the rooftops of the
houses and buildings along the Puget Sound shore. Then the
pilot came running out of the cabin to the back of the plane.
I was sitting in the front, so I couldn't tell what he was
looking at. He ran back up to the cockpit. He did this two
more times. We were still flying just above rooftops. Then
the plane turned west out over Puget Sound. I was sure we
were going to ditch. The flight attendant came on the PA
system and said we had a mechanical problem and were
returning to Boeing Field.
I couldn't tell what had happened, but people in the back of
the plane could see the problem. The plane was an F27 prop-
jet, with the cabin below the wings. Wheels in the wings were
retracted into the wheel-wells on take off, but the covers
over the wheel-well on one side began to close before the
wheels were retracted. The pilot tried two more times to
lower and retract the wheels, and they ended up battering the
doors to pieces. We landed okay and were later put on another
plane to Pasco, and then taken by van to WallaWalla. I think
the drive from Pasco to WallaWalla took about as long as the
flight from Seattle to Pasco.

To help you understand who he was to me & my family - Harlan

But in truth, Harlan & I were more like deeply bonded
siblings - like twins with personalities very different from
one another. We were so very, very close - & loved (still
love) each other very, very much. It is very difficult for
"outsiders" to understand the relationship, or the life-
changing depth of the loss & grief I (& my family) have

Thomas was a huge part of Harlan's end-of-life care. So was
Brad PETERSON ('67) - my sons' father - who was good friends
with Harlan. And my sons were devastated by his death. In
fact, my whole extended family - we all miss him so deeply.

Re: sister Grace
It is with deep sorrow and regret to inform all that my
older sister Grace passed away. She had been suffering from
diabetes for years and lost her sight, which was devastating
to her as she loved to read. She was such a joy, growing up
together, had a beautiful singing voice, and was loved by
all who knew her. She leaves behind many relatives including
grandchildren and great grandchildren. I believe she is in a
better place and finally at peace. Till we're together again,
Love, Frank.

Re: Foot Ointment for the dogs
Something else I did not know about.
Volunteers heat and mix: 5 parts of zinc oxide to 1 part
triamcinolone acetonide cream (I have a prescription for this
that I use for skin rashes) mixed with mineral oil. Then they
use a special funnel to put the mix in tubes and crimp the
tube ends. Then it's bagged up and sent to the CheckPoints.
http://alumnisandstorm.com/Xtra/Idit/26-Ointment-00.htm
Dr. Stu Nelson, Iditarod's chief veterinarian said the
ointment is used to protect the dogs' paws. If a dog has a
small nick in a pad, the ointment covers and fills it to
prevent it from growing. It's kinda like hand lotion for
humans. Some mushers use their own blend, but this is
available to all if its needed..
Stay tuned...

Re: Basketball - by Jeff Morrow former Herald sports editor
"Mid-Columbia prep basketball teams learn who
they will face at state regionals"| Tri-City
Herald 2/20/19
"Thirteen boys and girls basketball teams from
the Mid-Columbia Region remain alive in the
postseason, and all of them will be playing in
the state regionals either Friday or Saturday.
The Washington Interscholastic Activities
Association released its final RPI rankings,
pairings and locations on Tuesday after the final
district tournament games were completed on
Monday.
Here's the situation for each of this area's
teams: Class 4A boys: The Richland boys dropped
from No. 4 to No. 5 in the final RPI, which means
the Bombers hit the road on Friday night against
No. 4 Mt Si. That game is set for a 6 p.m. tipoff
at Issaquah High School. If Richland wins, the
Bombers advance to next week's state tournament
in the Tacoma Dome and play on Thursday. If they
lose, the Bombers will play a loser-out game next
Wednesday in the Tacoma Dome.
The Chiawana boys are ranked 14th in the
tournament and will play No. 11 Puyallup at 6
p.m. Friday at Auburn Mountainview High School.
This is a loser-out game. A Chiawana win means
playing in the Tacoma Dome next Wednesday.
Class 4A girls: The Chiawana girls finish the RPI
rankings at No. 12, and the Riverhawks will play
No. 13 Camas in a loser-out game at noon at
Richland High on Saturday. Chiawana must win to
advance to the Tacoma Dome next Wednesday.
The Sunnyside girls are ranked ninth, and the
Grizzlies will play No. 16 Newport of Bellevue at
noon on Saturday at Davis High School in Yakima.
A Sunnyside win would advance the Grizzlies to a
Wednesday game in Tacoma. A loss would end the
Grizzlies' season.
Class 3A girls: The Kamiakin girls finished
ranked No. 4 and thus earned a game close to
home. The Braves will play No. 5 Peninsula at 6
p.m. Saturday at Richland High. Kamiakin will
advance to Tacoma no matter what happens.
Class 2A girls: The Grandview girls, CWAC
district champions, earned the No. 12 seed and
will play No. 13 Black Hills at 2 p.m. Saturday
at Davis High School. It's a loser-out game, so
the Greyhounds must win to advance to play next
Wednesday in the Yakima Valley SunDome.
Class 1A boys: No. 8 Connell has to play No. 1
Lynden Christian at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount
Vernon High School. Win or lose, the Eagles will
play next week in Yakima.
No. 9 Royal gets a game close to home, playing
No. 16 Cascade Christian at 8 p.m. Friday night
at Ellensburg High School. That is a loser-out
contest.
Class 1A girls: The No. 15 Connell girls will
travel to play No. 10 Freeman in a loser-out game
at West Valley High School in Spokane. Tipoff is
8 p.m. Friday. The Eagles must win to advance to
Yakima next week.
Class 2B girls: Tri-Cities Prep is ranked No. 2
in the RPI, and the Jaguars will play No. 7
Auburn Adventist Academy at 8 p.m. Saturday at
Richland High. The Jaguars will play next week in
the Spokane Arena, win or lose.
No. 16 Mabton has to travel to Eastmont High
School, where the Vikings will play No. 9
Brewster in a loser-out game at 8 p.m. Saturday.
1B boys: Top-ranked Sunnyside Christian will take
on No. 8 Naselle at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ellensburg
High School. SSC will still advance to Spokane
whether it wins or loses.
1B girls: No. 6 Sunnyside Christian will play No.
3 Almira-Coulee/Hartline at 6 p.m. Friday at
Cheney High School. SSC will advance to next
week's state tournament in Spokane win or lose."
GOOD LUCK BOMBERS!

Re: Tri-City Herald
Over the past few months (years maybe) there have been a lot
of entries concerning the decline of our local paper, the
Tri-City Herald. I discovered something today I thought might
be of interest to others, especially if you are close to
renewing or canceling your home delivery of the paper.
Last November, I went into the front office of the Herald
and renewed my subscription for another year. I really don't
recall off hand what they quoted me price wise for a year,
but I told them no, that was way out of line, and I couldn't
afford it being on Social Security. After some brief
conversation, the lady said she could renew at a special
rate. The year prior, I had negotiated over the phone with
them and got the "bargain price" of somewhere around $350,
which I felt was totally out of line, but I do enjoy my
morning paper and coffee.
The lady told me she could renew my subscription for $189.99.
Of course I jumped right on that price thinking "Wow, I
really am getting a deal." At least a couple people had
written in the Alumni Sandstorm saying if you went in the
office you could get this price. I walked out of there
pleased that I had got such a deal from the previous year.
This morning I had a thought about renewing and couldn't
remember when I had done so, because I knew it wasn't too
long after my wife, Marsha GOSLIN Brehm ('65-RIP) had passed
away in October. So, I looked online for my account at the
Herald and there was something wrong and it wouldn't let me
access my account information. I called and asked how long my
current yearly renewal was good for, etc. and they told me
what I needed to know, but while I was on the phone I was
looking at their website and it said you could get a year of
the paper plus digital access for $129.99. A difference of
$60.00. I asked about that and she told me they couldn't
refund or extend my subscription and went on to tell me how
much I was saving under the posted amount for the paper.
After talking to her, I looked and sure enough, on page 2
they still have the listed price for a year at $25.00 per
week, which figures out to a whopping $1,300.00 a year!! What
a deal for a paper that is 11 pages some days! So if you're
getting close to renewal time, go online and check it out
and save yourself a lot of money.

Re: Sign Of The Time
http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Dav/190223_Vegas_Snow.jpg
David sent me a picture today, and in just a minute or two
here I'm going to send it to you. The picture is intended to
show me the couple inches of snow around the pool area of his
Las Vegas home--which is really a pretty big deal for anybody
accustomed to the 115 degree heat they get in the summertime
over there--but I got distracted by something I noticed in
the picture of his backyard, just along the far edge of his
pool, and I'm going to ask you to take a moment or two here
and get distracted with me.
Please zoom in. See the snow?
Now zoom in on the old wooden RailRoad Crossing sign sticking
up in his backyard,
about halfway between the lip of the pool and the white wall.
See it?
Good. Now hold on that. [lightened & circled in red. -Maren]
We've reached the point in our story where it's time for the
Flashback...
FLASHBACK: weird music and squiggly lines across your
screen...
It is about 15 years ago, and Rivers, Simpson and I, (all
'65'), are standing along the cracked sidewalk of Santa Fe
Ave in old downtown Los Angeles, staring up at a hundred
year-old wooden RailRoad-Crossing sign that's been standing
there since the late 1800s, guarding the intersection of 4th
and Santa Fe, just before you go up over the 4th St. Bridge.
As we stand there looking up at this beautiful old sign, 10
feet tall, the railroad tracks have already been pulled up
and paved over about 60 years ago. And/which means this
RailRoad Crossing sign is now a defunct relic and has no
practical value whatsoever to the City Of Los Angeles.
I'm telling you this because we are about to steal it, or
try to steal it, and I don't want you getting any wrong ideas
about our moral characters as we stand there in the gathering
twilight of an L.A. summer eve.
Simpson (RIP) is standing a little apart from Rivers and me
and holding a rusted, medium-sized carpenter's saw at his
side. And he is pissed. He's pissed because David and I have
tricked him into flying down from Seattle this afternoon
under the pretense of going with us to some party or other up
in the Hills, and he has only just now realized that there is
no party and we really only wanted some help sawing down this
old railroad sign.
So after a minute or two of telling us what he thinks of our
invitation, and our friendship, he drops the saw down onto
the pavement and walks off across 4th Street to my loft to
wait for us to come take him to dinner. After all, we owe
him.
Well, the saw wouldn't even put a nick in that thick, ancient
railroad sign. Not a chance. A stupid idea in the first
place. Simpson flew home to Seattle the next day and David
drove back to Vegas. And Life went on.
A month later, as I was jogging along Santa Fe Ave, I saw
that RailRoad Crossing sign laying on its side there, half
in the street and half up on the sidewalk. Somebody had
evidently run up over the curb with their car or truck and
knocked the sign over on its side.
Just snapped it off.
And there it was.
I paid two of the street people from the neighborhood $20 to
drag it across 4th Street, over to behind my loft. I called
David, and two weeks later he came over with his truck and
hauled it home.
Until this afternoon, when he sent me the picture of the snow
around the pool in his backyard, I'd never actually SEEN what
he'd done with the sign.
Nice job, David. A little shorter, but nice. And I like the
way you touched up the paint.
Ol' Simpson sure did get pissed that day, didn't he?
Please get well, David. Please. I love you and I need you. I
know of some more old stuff I'd like to get.

Heard some pulsating noise and checked the outside unit of my
heat pump. The bottom 3/4 was just covered with snow and ice
some of it five or six inches thick and I don't know how long
it has been like that. Only thing I could think to do was use
a window scraper for the snow and a heat gun for the ice. It
was a nice sunny day in the Tri-Cities today, but no sun
shinning on that side of the house. I got the snow off as
best I can and am running cord for the heat gun, then what
to my eyes should appear, but crocuses blooming in the snow.
They are next to the sidewalk running in front of the house
where I shoveled even more snow. Little after noon when the
shadow of the house covered them they closed up.
Worked for a long time on that heat pump unit but there are
still places that have thick ice on it. I am sure I will be
doing more tomorrow, but it is working now and not making
that noise.

Re: Tri-City Herald
A couple days ago I sent an entry concerning the local
newspaper we have here in the Tri-Cities. I received emails
from a couple Bombers about the yearly rates of the Tri City
Herald. I indicated how I discovered online that you can get
a yearly rate of $129.99. I just cringe at the thought two
years ago I paid over $350 for the year and that was a
negotiated price rate I got over the phone. This year I went
into their office and managed to get a rate of $189 for the
year and now I see it's possible to get a rate of $129.99.
Google it and check out their "special rates". If you look on
page two of the daily paper, they list their rate as $25.00
per week and with 52 weeks in the year, that's $1,300. They
have so many rates it's amazing to me that they are still in
business. With the paper printed in Yakima and trucked to the
Tri-Cities, I have a great carrier who has it on my door step
each morning before 6:00. Patti McLAUGHLIN ('65) mentioned
tipping, and I do the same as she does. I tip my carrier
directly instead of through the paper.
Re: Ray BELL ('60_RIP)
Yesterday morning I went to the Memorial Service for Ray Bell
and although I got there about 10 minutes before it started
the number of people there was over whelming. I think most of
Richland was there and it was a wonderful tribute to a really
super, great guy!! It was standing room only, but that didn't
matter as the service was really great! Ray knew a lot of
people and from the number of people there it was very
obvious that many people thought the world of Ray. He will

"In 4A boys, the Richland Bombers lost to Mt. Si
60-54 on Saturday at Issaquah High School.
However, the Bombers still have a chance at
winning the state title. They'll play Mount
Rainier at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday in a loser-out
game in the Tacoma Dome. Richland did a good job
defensively, shutting down Mt. Si's top two
scorers, Jabe Mullins and Tyler Patterson. But
Brett Williams stepped up for the Wildcats,
scoring a game-high 16 points."

To: All Bombers
Snow is falling once again in the Mid Columbia and after
digging around I've found some of a storm from January 16th
1954. Perhaps some of you shoveled the winter white fallout
to make enough to go to a movie and a bite at By's Burgers
afterwards.

Maren, what an adorable photo of a lady being "attacked " by

Re: Snow in Richland
I was talking to my brother Roy CROSS ('65) today, and we
were agreeing we don't ever remember the Tri-Cities having
had snow that lasted this long.
Re: Snow - January 16, 1954
I was only 10... the photos Don Sorenson (NAB) sent of snow
in '54, so no doubt enjoyed having the snow.
I do remember sledding on Carmichael hill one year with Carol
RICE Forister ('62-rIP), Cathy WOOD Stevens ('62), and
Grenada McCOY ('62). I WAS HAVING SO MUCH FUN I managed to
catch my hip on one of the few trees on the hill, and
couldn't walk afterwards, so a kind gentlemen offered to
drive me home. (We weren't suppose to accept rides from
strangers, so [my friends] memorized his license plate
numbers. One of our dads wasn't due to pick us up for at
least another hour.) The nice gentleman (who also had
children there who he left sledding) delivered me to my
folks, and as I remember it, I couldn't really walk for 3
days, so I missed a few days of school. Think that might have
been in '58 or '59, as by '60 I was working part time at
Densow's, and Carol was working part time at JJ Newberry's,
so we wouldn't have had time to go sledding.
I also remember we had a lot of snow in '64 when Carol RICE
married David Humphrey and there was so much snow my dad was
driving me, because I wasn't used to driving in much snow.
As always, fun memories of growing up in Richland.
I've heard rumors of a reunion the 6, 7, and 8 of this
September, but not sure what it's a reunion of?
[That would be the Club40 reunion which happens
every year the first week end after Labor Day.
Many classes have their 5 or 10 year reunion in
conjunction with Club40, but - sadly - not class
of '64 this time around. Dates are already set
for September 13 & 14. Go figure. -Maren]

Re: Now to some more important matters
Today we celebrate the anniversary of nuptials of a pair of
Bombers. I rode the bus from North Richland to Col-Hi with
one, and have actually had lunch with both of them. They
still seem to want to be together. So, hats off to Carol
TYNER ('52) and Dick ROBERTS ('49) on this special day.
There is also a Bomber Babe having a birthday today. I won't
tell you which one it is, as that would be telling a lady's
age which is sort of impolite. To say that I went to school
with her is not stretching the truth; nor would be the fact
that we graduated together. That we knew each other in school
might be an over statement of fact. I think I knew who she
was, but I doubt the reverse. Be that as it may, we do share
one thing, we both happen to be past presidents of Club 40.
A very deep flourish of the ol' propeller beanie and a
"Happy Birthday!" to Marilynn WORKING ('54). We will probably
converse via e-mail prior to the party scheduled for this
coming September. We certainly will talk then.

It has been a long time since I have voiced any comments in
the Sandstorm, but I am a daily reader.
Today is Thursday February 28 and I would like all of you to
root for Eastlake that is playing at 5:30 in the Tacoma Dome.
My granddaughter is the basketball coach and they are the
team that beat Woodinville twice this year, even tho they
were rated 8th in State and Woodinville 1st. Last year she
was named "Coach of the Year" so this wasn't any fluke. They
are good. My grandson was here for a business trip last night
and he said if Eastlake gets to the final playoff they will
come up from Vancouver and take me to the Tacoma Dome to
watch the game. So please root for Eastlake tonight - thanks.

There is snow in the Valley. Depending on where one is, the
depths vary from an inch or so to a foot and maybe better. It
is deeper south of Salem than north.
Be that as it may, there is one of the younger Bomber Babes
of my acquaintance celebrating a birthday today. Kinda hard
to tell if it is her 21st or 22nd; but I'm sure she is old
enough to go to places where adult beverages are served, if
she wanted to.
A flourish of the ol' propeller beanie and a "Happy
Birthday!" to Lola HEIDLEBAUGH ('60). And if I spelled her
name wrong, I'm sure Maren will correct me. [You did... and
I did. -Maren]

I got a call from a classmate who tried to book a room for
our reunion online. She said she was unable to get a reunion
rate. I called the hotel and I was told you need to talk to
the event planner, Cassie, to get that rate. Also, if you
want to stay longer than the two day reunion (at that rate)
you will need to ask her about it. The rates are pretty
reasonable, especially for Columbia Point.

The Richland Bomber boys beat the Mt. Rainier Rams on
Wednesday at the Tacoma Dome. The score at the end of the
first quarter was 15-8, 34-14 at the end of the half, 62-27
at the end of the third quarter and 81-51 final.
The Richland Bomber team will play Federal Way at 12:15pm on
Thursday at the Tacoma Dome in the quarter finals.
Congratulations on a well-played game, Bombers!!
