The 1958 tournament was the one year that my dad and mom, Grover and Margaret Dawson, did not go to State. They were huge supporters of Col-Hi sports and always helped the coaches drive the team to Seattle for the 4-day tourney. In early 1958 we moved to a new house and they were very busy with that, so they skipped going. I went with Judy BOWEN Pies ('60-RIP) and felt terrible that the year we won it all was the one year that my folks did not go. I see on the program that my dad attended the banquet. Don says the program was donated by Lee Edgar's daughter Karen Miles NAB. Correction! Karen EDGAR Miles was in the class of '60. For the ceremonial start in Anchorage, that's all about photo ops and fun for the IditaRiders. The "real" race begins on Sunday from Willow, AK. Starting positions remain the same on Saturday as on Sunday. IditaRiders get to ride in the sled with the musher for the first 11 miles to the Campbell Air Strip. All teams then get to Willow by car for the "real" start of the race. It takes a couple of hours for all teams to get on the trail as they depart in two minute intervals on both Saturday and Sunday. These departure times "even out" after the mandatory 24 hour rest. In other words: The LAST team to depart Willow can depart after resting 24 hours... the second to last team to leave Willow has to wait 24 hours AND TWO MINUTES before departing after their 24 hour rest. It's all very precise and designed so that nobody has an advantage. The first team to depart Willow has to wait 24 hours and [52 teams by 2 minutes] or 24 hours and 104 minutes. See how that "evens out? Position #1 is an honorary position and ONLY goes from Anchorage to the Campbell Air Strip on Saturday. I received a renewal notice several weeks ago and the 13 week rate is $131.30. I have been paying around $105.00 for 13 weeks after complaining. The one year rate is $525.20! I stopped by the paper today and asked for the senior rate, which the lady kind of sarcastically said "There is no senior rate, but I can give you one year at $189.50", which I promptly wrote a check for that amount. She said after one year it would go up to $200.00, which is still a great price compared to $525.00! People who have been paying the priced listed on the renewal notice are getting screwed big time. I do not understand why they just don't offer the $189.50 on the renewal notices. -Jim DAUGHERTY ('70) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Don Sorenson (NAB) To: All Bombers Re: Buzz http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Sor/190302_00Buzz-105c-56.jpg A couple months back an obit for Buzz JOCHEN ('51-RIP) was posted, I had heard of Buzz a couple of years ago. My source told me he worked in the 100 Areas doing research on slug failures. Several years ago I interviewed Lou Turner, Manhattan Project veteran from the MET Lab in Chicago, during that time he told me he used underwater magnifying glasses to determine why slugs failed. These visuals were carried out in the discharge basins but there was a limit to what they could do in them. Other tools were built increase capabilities, like one developed to open the failed slugs, it was quite ingenious. Designing fuel to handle the increased power levels planned for each reactor was, in so many words, imperative. C reactor had a larger discharge basin to hold more fuel and to install more equipment for irradiated fuel experiments. It was in C reactor this Bomber worked. I've attached a photo of C reactors basin. When I found it a couple years ago I sent it to his son who works on site. He forwarded it to his dad. I always wanted to speak to him about that time over the glow from the basin, it never came to pass. Re: Cool Snow Jobs http://alumnisandstorm.com/Xtra/Sor/190302_000.htm Still going with the snow theme with this entry. The photos are of F Reactor from 1954, what you see are efforts to remove a test assembly. Of course its very radioactive hence the need for the crane and rope the several operators were using to guide the assembly onto the truck bed. If I was a betting man the "cooler" end will be pointed at the driver. You know its too bad there wasn't a bigger push to capture worker histories from these early radiation workers. There have been efforts over the years but I'm afraid it started too late, so much information has been lost that provides details on how we worked with items like this. I've had a "few" hot jobs I can say were fun and a few not so much. Certain circles hearing that think its nuts to be involved in this industry. To that I reply, there are hazards to many industrial work places. Ours carries a lot of baggage. -Don L. In the 2013 race, Matt requested a pizza in Unalakleet and a fan sent him a pizza that was waiting at one of the next CheckPoints... Matt's best finish was #13 in 2018. AND he pronounces it Smith anyway. Ramey has been #2 in the past... he could win it all. ~ Pete Kaiser/Bib#9 - Just a feeling about this guy... he's a consistent top ten finisher ~ Anna Berington/Bib #10 - I just like watching the twins. They're so pretty. ~ Kristy Berington/Bib#26 ~ Jessie Royer/Bib #14 - She's a consist ant top 20 finisher. Best finish: #2 in '01 ~ Matt Failor/Bib#17 - See notes about Matt above in text to Marie RUPPERT ('63) ~ Aliy Zirkle/Bib#19 - Aliy is always a crowd favorite... often a big smile on her face... interacts with the crowd and with villagers at all the CheckPoints. Her best finish: #2 in 2014 (behind Dallas Seavey) and 2015 (Behind Mitch Seavey). ~ Nic Petit/Bib #20 - was Rookie of the year in 2011 when he started racing the Iditarod. Best finish: #2 last year. ~ Martin Buser/Bib#21 - First Iditarod was 1980 and He was racing against mushers like Susan Butcher (RIP) and Rick Swenson (the winningest musher with 5 wins). Martin has won 4 races. His last win was 2002 when he set the speed record (8d:22h:46m:02s) that stood for quite a number of years. Martin is one tough dude. In 2005 about 2 weeks before the race started, he cut his finger badly with a table saw. He was in so much pain as the race progressed that he got one of the vets to cut it off for him at one of the CheckPoints AND KEPT ON RACING. He knows how to win. Don't count him out. ~ Jeff King/Bib#23 - Another one who knows how to win with 4 wins under his belt, he'd love to tie Rick Swenson's 5 wins... ~ Joar/Bib #28 - He's Joar (pronounced your) something Norwegian that I can't spell or pronounce. Joar has been a top finisher ever since he started racing the Iditarod in 2013 when he earned Rookie of the Year honors at #7... been in the top ten since the beginning. ~ Victoria Hardwick/Bib #30 - She's a rookie from Bethel, AK and basically I'm watching her just because I have a niece (my brother Tim's ('62) youngest) whose married name is Hardwick. ~ Mitch Seavey/Bib #32 - Mitch has won three ('04, '13, and '17) and you know he'd love to get win #4 and match his son (Dallas), Jeff, Martin, and Lance). ~ Lance Mackey/Bib #44 - the ONLY musher ever to win 4-in-a- row. It was said that a tramp was a man who worked only when he had to, a bum was a man who didn't work at all. But a hobo was a traveling worker, who went wherever he could for work, often hitching rides on freight trains - aka "riding the rails" - to get from one place with potential work to the next. Hobo is a contraction of "hoe boy", as many of these itinerant workers carried their own hoes for doing field work. My own father went down into the coal mines of Colorado at age 13. But for a while in his later teen years, he took a break from those dangerous mines, and rode the rails as a hobo himself. Re: Early Iditarod days I lived in Alaska when we used to get just radio coverage of the race. the morning radio station (there was only one) would give us Iditarod updates... that was in the days when Rick Swenson & Susan Butcher (RIP) kinda traded off who would win the race every year... and they spouted off to reporters, too... who reported every barb that went back and forth between the two at every CheckPoint. Those were the days that started the bumper stickers that read: "ALASKA! Where men are men and women win the Iditarod" Re: Dog Booties Another thing Musher is required to have in the sled 8 booties for each dog. The booties keep the snow from packing into the pads of their feet which causes problems. Basically a bootie is just a sock like affair usually with a velcro strip around the top.. Mushers take all the booties off when they're resting in a CheckPoint and then bootie Up just before leaving the CheckPoint. 4 booties x 14 dogs. That's 56 booties off... and 56 on. I THINK - I'll have to check this - that they are only used once, so they must ship more to each check point, keep up with the used, bring them home, wash and re-use them. Re: Iditarod cost Yesterday I think I said 10 grand... Friend of mine googled it and found that Dallas Seavey said that when he won the race in 2012, he won $50,000 and turned right around ans spent $57,000 to feed his dogs. Dallas said it costs a quarter mill to do the Iditarod right. I just googled and came up with this: "Iditarod Entry Fee in 2019: $4,000 per musher. Travel Costs: $1,500. THEN I don't know what happens to all the bibs, but they aren't worn during the race. And - like magic - they have their bib on again when they cross under the burled arch in Nome... I'll have to ask somebody how they DO that... As another way to make money, mushers sign their bib and they are auctioned off after the race. Mitch Seavey/#32 said about that today "I mean, you might come off your '24' and find yourself saying 'Uh Oh'". You must have a nearly paralyzed fanny from all the computer time! We lived in Indiana 1966-'78. One year (I think it was 1976) George (RIP) had an ongoing engineering project in Baton Rouge and he took me down to Louisiana for Mardi Gras. What a treat to leave 3 little kids at home with a reliable older woman for a week! After a day or two in Baton Rouge, we went to New Orleans, where we spent all day in the French Quarter on Fat Tuesday. We stayed at a Holiday Inn northeast (I think) of the city and took transportation into town. If crowds can experience gridlock, that's what we fought all day, but it was exhilarating! Saw all the sights and the naughty displays up on the balconies and went to Preservation Hall and to see Pete Fountain, among other adventures. Came home with a slew of cheap plastic necklaces thrown from all the floats. {Many years ago, I used dental floss and took all those plastic beads and made a garland for my Christmas tree. Had it for years. Now days those plastic beads aren't strung... they're all in one piece. -Maren] The only real difficulty was bladder management, but I had a marvelous idea. We went to the Holiday inn in the Quarter. We flashed our key cards from the other Holiday Inn at the door (heavily guarded) and got right in. We marched smartly to the elevator and went to the top floor. I figured that there likely was a lounge on the top floor (correct) and that there would be restrooms nearby for all those drinkers (correct again). Soon after, we made our way back down to the lobby and out the door. I felt so smart for having figured out a nifty solution to an urgent problem. We left New Orleans the next day for Pascagoula, Mississippi, and Mobile, Alabama. That was our one and only Mardi Gras, but it was great! [Bladder control can be a real problem if you drink a lot. I remember starting to look for a restroom (sometimes port-a-potty) AS SOON AS I felt the slightest urge. -Maren] -Stephanie DAWSON Janicek ('60) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Helen CROSS Kirk ('62) Love your stats from the Iditarod, Maren; I'd love to see it someday, a wild dream? If I weren't so digitally challenged, I'd send it to the Sandstorm. I've run across a "medical" item, in my daily Science and "Public Affairs" reading, that I think is worth sharing. It's about the truly nasty, painful "Shingles" disease. The virus starts with Chicken pox, (with those who get it that way). It then hangs on dormant in you permanently thereafter, risking re- emergence. Meanwhile Your- and everyone else's- dormant virus is transmissible to Everyone in the environment, with or without the pox history. My Source for this is the bi-weekly magazine Science News Magazine, (to which I'll give a link later.) It states that the virus is carried in 95% of the population. Shingles Re-emergence tends to worse than original experience; and the risk of both that and Original infection rises with age above 50. So we of the 65th Anniversary Club 40 Reunion in September are on the top rung. (And we've surely been through more than one "wide exposure period" along the way.) Before the first Shingles vaccine, "Zostavax," was developed a few decades ago, there was no help. Even today, apparently, there are few if any treatments for the pain. But quite recently a New and apparently much more effective vaccine, "Shingrix," (sp?) has been approved. Unfortunately it's in short supply, nationally. There are long "Wait Lists" everywhere. At all the several health care facilities that I'm aware of, and I'm on them! Reportedly, anyone who has Received the original "Zostavax" should get Two injections of the New vaccine. Back when "Zostafax" was in development, I happened upon a public invitation to join a Trial of it. Knowing I'd had Chickenpox, I joined up. I think it was the Final double-blind Trial prior to FDA Approval. At the Trial's conclusion, I was informed that I'd Got the vaccine. So I'm In for the "Shingrix." (sp) Back to "Science News." The Magazine is well regarded in the "Real Science" Community. On a Par with the best of the Journals of Research Publication. Some Scientists read it to keep abreast of what's coming up outside their own science sphere. It's a Survey of the most interesting research findings from among all of the Sciences. Yet it is "accessible" to non-scientist "lay" folks like me. Also used widely in school and college science classes. If the people are in favor, the issue would have to go to the federal gummint, and we know how they is. So much for that. Now as to shaving daily or not I can see the ladies side of the argument. Why was the 1958 Bomber Basketball State Championship celebration held at Camp Hanford? My memory from the time (as a mere 8th grader, but with a brother as a Junior) is that the event was first scheduled for a site in Kennewick. Only a day or two before the event, the owners of the booked hall discovered that the Brown brother super-heroes were not the right color, and proposed to Bomberville that the event still continue as scheduled, but that the C.W. and Norris stay on the opposite side of the Yakima River. The students, I recall, en masse boycotted the event, and then must have rescheduled for a less Neanderthal location to the north: Camp Hanford. A dog named Joey had been fighting with another dog on the team and jumped it during a break on the way to the Bering Sea checkpoint of Koyuk. Re: Dick WIGHT's ('52) comments on daylight saving time

I most hardily agree. I do feel sorry for those who are so
mal-coordinated that changing a clock or several clocks twice
a year is such a handicap as to put them in mortal danger of
a herniated disc or a sprained wrist. Perhaps they have found
a job opportunity for a Grand son or daughter. That way they
will have employment 2 days a year instead of none. But start
advertising now that your child will be available to change
clocks on those terrible days. Perhaps you can set up a
training session to teach them how to change the hands on old
fashion Dial clocks as well as the modern digital ones. What
an upsurge in employment rates that would create.

Well, has anyone cracked the mystery of where The Genetrics
held their style show as reported by Mr. (NAB) Sorensen?
Figure it has to be someplace where Bingo was held regularly.
About the only places I can think of would be the old Rec
Hall (very doubtful) or some church annex. From the looks of
construction, had to have been done to a CofE plan, modified.

At any rate, here in the Valley, the daffodils are blooming
along the front walk which would mean spring isn't that far
away.

Re: 3/13/19 Maren's Malarkey

Teams are coming into Nome now... and Nome welcomes EVERY ONE
no matter the time of day (or night)... They set off the
siren when there's a musher on Front Street. When they hear
the siren, people come out of the businesses (bars?) along
Front Street to welcome in the newest finisher. There's
somebody there announcing the incoming mushers with a little
bio about him/her and sometimes they mess that part. I just
watched Mitch Seavey come in and they didn't even turn the
mic on for his bio. Race Marshall Mark Nordman appears to be
there to greet EVERY musher. Then there is a check for all
mandatory gear before the announcement of their arrival with
their race time. Also looks like the GPS is turned off as
soon as they arrive in Nome.

Re: Bib

Found out that the bib with the starting position is worn for
the start of the race and then removed. It is put back on at
the Safety CheckPoint.

Re: Only FOUR Iditarods closer

1978: Dick Mackey beat Rick Swenson by 1 second.

1982: Rick Swenson beat Susan Butcher by 4 mins.
1977: Rick Swenson beat Jerry Riley by 5 mins.
2019: Pete Kaiser beat Joar Ulsom by 12 mins 16 secs

Re: Nikolai CheckPoint

It is said that the winner of the Iditarod is "always" among
the first 15 teams to arrive in Nikolai. True again this
year. In fact... all but one of the top ten was among the
first 15 into Nikolai.

Then I'll hold off any more results until they're all off the
trail... hopefully by the time they have the Finisher Banquet

I have recounted many times here how he and I re-met because of a post in our beloved Sandstorm, 33 years after our high school graduation. He passed on 3.5 years ago, and I must admit that I increasingly do not like being a widow. However, it is still St. Patrick's Day, and I am still half Irish. So I will not let the day go uncelebrated, at least in my quiet way. Like many of you, I will be cooking up corned beef and cabbage, with great leftovers for several days. Re: Iditarod Going back quite a few years now, I remember when I started reading Maren's posts about this truly incredible race. At first I thought I had very little interest, but as the years have gone on, I have found myself following each post, day by day. What an extraordinary relationship between humans and dogs! And what unbelievable accomplishments these teams achieve together! Thank you, Maren, for bringing my awareness to its present level, and piquing my interest in the Iditarod. I look forward to your recounting of the daily events every year now! Re: Moving in to Richland Beginning the first week of April, I will be gradually moving from West Richland back into Richland. (Over the course of about 6 weeks). This is a very happy move for me! When I was born, the baby of the family, we lived on the corner of Cullum and Fitch the left-hand side of a B house. Across Fitch to the south was another B house, and the next house down was an E house. That a house was owned by the Biggerstaff family. Dick Biggerstaff ('58) eventually became our paperboy, and in 1964 married my sister, Sally ('60). (By then we had moved 5 houses north, still on Cullum , to an F house. What year was it that the government started letting citizens buy houses? 1956 or 1957? Whenever it was, that's when we moved). That E house has been occupied by my (extended) family since it was originally built - 1944. First, Dick's family moved in there, having originally come from Nebraska for his Dad to go to work at Hanford as a carpenter. His father died in 1970, & his mother lived there until 1993, when she had to move into long term care. At that time, Dick & Sally moved back to Richland from the Midwest, & bought the house. They lived there until moving to Goldendale in 2003, & two of their sons (my nephews) took turns living there in the ensuing years. Recently their youngest son migrated to Goldendale to help them out on their farm place .... and the question arose, "what do we do with the old family home "? None of us wanted to see it leave the family. We all have so many MANY memories centering around that place there - my first being at age 2, when Sally took me there to see the bunnies Dick was raising in the back yard. Now ... what's all this have to do with me? Well, the house in West Richland to which I moved in mid-2018 (from my farm in Idaho) has turned out to have issues beyond those I want to tackle - e. g. discovered it needs rewiring! Scary!!! Simultaneously, the non-profit organization for which I relocated to establish a psychiatric line of service has found itself to be underfunded. As a consequence, the decision was made to close that psychiatric practice. So my job ends effective April 1st. And the insurance and remediation issues at the farm (ongoing for 2 years, now) are still not settled. So I can't sell it yet, and thus cannot buy another place here. But - I HAVE DOGS! A huge part of my life. So where to live? Here's the best part :-) Dick and Sally were hoping to keep the house on Cullum, and had begun work on converting the basement into a (HUGE) one bedroom daylight apartment, while refurbishing the upstairs. They needed to rent out at least the top half. But they didn't want to just rent it out to "just anyone". And they needed someone to live upstairs, while they finished the downstairs - someone who would possibly be willing to move to the downstairs, should they decide to move back to Richland (and into the upstairs) at a later date. So ... guess who gets to move back to the old neighborhood? ME!!! (And my dogs, of course). This is so exciting to me - a total blessing! I get to move back to where I started out in life .... right across from Lewis & Clark Elementary School. My little grandchildren will get to experience the same play areas with which I grew up. The memories - it's just wonderful to contemplate all of the joys awaiting me there. Re: Organizing Super timely for me is my discovery of the Maria Kondo method of decluttering, letting go of what I really don't need/want, and organizing. I can't imagine a better time to do this than when I am moving to my new home. (In addition, the remainder of my stored stuff from the farm will be arriving here in early summer. That's a LOT to go through!). The new place might be rather empty in the beginning. But the things that will be there will be only things that "spark joy", as Maria Kondo espouses. I am REALLY, REALLY, REALLY looking forward to the calm that comes with being surrounded by less stuff - and all of that stuff being organized and tidy. Re: Future job I am in the midst of interviews and negotiations for working 100% from home, doing remote Telepsychiatry. This is definitely the wave of the future (actually the present), which allows many more people to get psychiatric help (often from the comfort and privacy of their own homes). I am very excited about this opportunity, and would appreciate your prayers and good thoughts toward this all coming together. (I DEFINITELY don't want to have to relocate from my home town again - but I do need to continue to work). Thanks for reading! -Lynn-Marie HATCHER Peashka ('68) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Don Sorenson (NAB) Re: HAPO http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Sor/190318_00.htm To: All Bombers When I hired on with Rockwell in 1977 one of the first of many suggestions I received was to get an account with HAPO. A few days later I was waiting in line to do just that. I looked around and noticed how many folks were wearing their badges, mostly Q clearances and a few red badges. When it was my turn I told the woman I worked at Hanford and was interested in getting an account, she seemed disengaged so I mentioned where I worked again thinking she didn't hear me. I don't know what I was expecting, really. Expectations and realities at 21, sometimes my learning curve is a bit steep. Anyway I located a few early photos of HAPO from '54 of customers and board members. Oh one last thing, I happened to run across a 1956 HAPO calender two years ago, the people who were selling it thought it was one from the credit union however it wasn't, it was one you would find in one of the many offices in Hanford. The cool thing, for me anyway, it was a 1956, my birth year. In great shape, looked like it was hot off the presses in the 712 Building. Well enough droning on. -Don L. My senior year I was president of Col-Hi's Quill and Scroll Society (national writing/journalism organization). Toward the end of each school year the Society would publish student works in a magazine titled Sandscript. In prior years it had been mimeographed. I decided I wanted it commercially printed like the Sandstorm, so we could include pictures as well as stories and poems. I went around to every printer until I found one we could afford, provided I typed the articles. In order to justify the right column the printer loaned me an Executive electric typewriter that had two space bars, one two units long, the other three units. I marked a line on the paper where the right margin was to be, typed a line using the three unit space key and then measured how many spaces I needed to add (press the 2-unit bar twice instead of the 3- unit bar) or subtract (replacing enough 3-unit spaces with 2- unit spaces) to make the margin even, then type the adjusted line next to it. He photographed the adjusted pages onto metal lithograph plates, which allowed adding pictures as well. It turned out so nice that he asked me to type other jobs for him that summer. In the fall I began Whitman College with a work grant - in the Student Union Building snack bar standing up six hours a day, which my legs couldn't take, for sixty cents an hour. (Schools could pay less than minimum wage to students.) I'd taken the postal exam to be a substitute carrier, so I went to the post office to see if I could get a part-time job. Unfortunately, the manager told me the test was only good where I took it - Richland. He asked me what skills I had, and when I said typing he gave me the address of a printing company in Walla Walla. I went there, and the first question the owner asked me was, "Do you know how to justify right margins with an Executive typewriter?" "Of course, doesn't everyone?" I got the job, at $1.25 an hour minimum wage. I worked there after classes all four years while I was in college, getting a small increase each year. My roommate my sophomore and junior years was angry - he worked standing up scrubbing pots and pans in the hot cafeteria kitchen for 60 cents an hour while I worked sitting down in an air conditioned office at an electric typewriter for minimum wage or better. My senior year, when I was getting ready to be married after graduation I also worked in the clerical pool office in my off hours during the mornings. I ended up typing all of President Perry's correspondence from a Dictaphone belt, as I could do them without making a rough draft first. As final exams drew closer I told the clerical manager I'd have to quit my job there to have more time to study. She raised my salary 10 cents above the print shop. I told the print shop owner I needed to quit to have more time to study, and he gave me a ten-cent raise too, so I ended up keeping both jobs. I still managed to graduate. I barely had enough for my airfare to Hawaii for the wedding, plus a room at the newest Waikiki hotel for our wedding night. I told my fiancée I didn't know how we were going to get back to the mainland after the wedding. She said her sister was giving us our airplane tickets and her aunt was giving us a 3-day honeymoon on Kauai. Most of her family's friends and relatives gave us money for wedding gifts since they knew we were going to the mainland to live. We started married life with a small fortune (for me). My fiancée and I had our first argument just before the wedding. I said after the reception we were going to our hotel. She said no, we were going to her parents' house to open wedding presents. I put my foot down and told her no, I wasn't going to open presents first. Anyway, by the time we finished opening presents we got to the hotel after midnight. We arrived at the airport in the morning for the trip to Kauai just in time to watch our plane take off. Aloha Airlines was very laid back and put us on the next flight - with a tour group composed of senior citizens. We looked somewhat out of place. At the Lihue airport we couldn't find our luggage. It turned out the tour group was staying at the Pali Palms and we were staying at the Kauai Surf. All the luggage on the plane was put on a truck and taken to the Pali Palms. The airline said they'd get our luggage and deliver it to the Kaui Surf. We checked into the hotel and went up to our room. We took one look at it, went back to the front desk, and told the desk clerk that two single beds would not do. They gave us another room. Later there was a knock on the door and the bell boy came in without waiting for a response. He dropped the luggage, apologized, and left hurriedly without waiting for a tip. -David DOUGLAS ('62) ~ Mesa, AZ where the temperature went from the sixties to the eighties overnight. Re: Cataract Surgery I had my eyes done maybe 6 weeks apart in Kennewick at the Pacific Cataract and Laser Institute in 1995 or 96. The PCLI was founded in 1985 in Chehalis by Doctor Robert Ford and others. It now has 17 locations in 6 states. Dr. Ford used to fly in every week to meet with patients who came by the busload from all over southwest Washington. I think I may have been one of the last patients actually treated by Dr. Ford himself in Kennewick. He is Seventh Day Adventist, and he asked if he could say a brief prayer before he started. I said "Please do!" I could not have been more pleased with the whole process. Re: Side note I had berated my husband George (RIP) for choosing a paint color with yellow in it for all the walls in our fairly new house. I wanted white walls. Well, the minute I returned home after the bandage was removed from my first cataract surgery, I had to apologize profusely to George. I've had one eye done, and have no trepidation regarding the other whenever it's needed - it was essentially a routine procedure as much as 15 years ago or more. While it requires precision and appropriate attention to post-op care, modern equipment makes it relatively simple with little to no chance of errors. Re: Jim MEFFORD's ('54) hip replacement surgery It sounds like you may have already had the surgery or will within a day or so, otherwise I would have advised you ask your surgeon for the rehab therapy exercises (modified as necessary for the pain and capability limitations prior to the replacement) to do beforehand. I did that for about three months prior to my second hip replacement, and it really helped the recovery process - at 6 weeks after, I was about two weeks ahead of where I had been after the first one. And, to go along with all the Alumni SS entries I've just seen, really focus on the rehab therapies, which I learned from watching my mother's dedicated recoveries after her replacement surgeries: One knee, one hip and one shoulder over maybe 15-20 years. She should have had the other shoulder replaced as well, but at 85+ she was no longer a candidate for any serious orthopedic surgery. -Earl BENNETT ('63) ~ from seasonably chilly and seriously rainy Central Virginia (delaying construction of an enclosed garden my wife has requested). ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Mary Ann VOSSE Hirst ('63) To: Chuck WITTEBORT ('61) Re: Old Pictures http://douglascountygensoc.org/photos002.html Thank you for sending in those old photographs. Haven't had an Alaska Native win since John Baker won in 2011... I remember when Baker won, too... he broke the speed record that Martin Buser set in 2002!! and there was a Native American tribe there beating on the drums for Baker, too!! Nome has an air raid siren that goes off WHENEVER there is a musher on Front Street... They had a web cam at the finish line. I kept my computer on till the race was over and all of a sudden (I could be in another room and hear it), I could hear the siren... and then some announcer would say "We have a musher on Front Street!"... people put their coats on and pour out of businesses (bars? prolly?) on Front street at all hours of the day and night... they scream and yell and clap for whatever musher is coming in... the announcer then gives us a "bio" of the musher(s) coming in... and when they get close enough... and when Lance Mackey came in, last year's Rookie of the Year 5 seconds behind him -- they were both on Front Street at the same time... and the announcer said "Please welcome to Nome TWO mushers on Main Street, the Amazing Lance Mackey in 26th position and last year's Rookie of the Year, Jessie Holmes in 27th position."... and this goes on for DAYS... Pete arrived on Wednesday, 3/13 and the last team arrived Sunday, 3/17. Nic Petit could have won this year, BUT... he was just out of Shaktoolik - hours ahead of Pete and Joar - about 150 miles from Nome... one of his dogs, Joey, had an argument with another dog and bit... Nic YELLED at Joey... and that just doesn't happen.. Nic said "They all heard me, too... and after that, they just wouldn't go." Nic had been running pretty much first place the whole race and he sat there when both Pete Kaiser and Joar passed him. SOOOO Nic scratched and it wasn't long before along came Wade Marrs with a broken sled that he had pieced together. Nic loaned Wade his sled so Wade could finish the race. Now - and here's the cool part - Nic won the "Fastest from Safety to Nome" award in '16, '17, and '18, so Wade made up his mind that Nic's SLED needed to win that award... and he did!! -Maren SMYTH ('63 & '64) ~ Gretna, LA ~ 66° at midnight ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: David RIVERS ('65) Re: HAPPY BIRTHDAY I know it ain't what it used to be but I am trying to get back to it... Unless you are directly involved with crane operations they're not required. Mirrors were a common tool, handy for looking into "hot" areas to keep exposure to a minimum. The Oakley reference is on point, great comparison. If you don't mind I'd like to use that in future presentations. I am sitting here with a piece of varnished hardwood floor (maybe 3" x 12") in a metal wrapped frame and an engraved plate on the front that says "Daddy Dawald Gym Floor"... Larry told me a long Larry-type story about this piece that, of course went in one side and out the other after the story kept getting bogged down with details . . Can anybody tell me what the significance of this memento might be? WHO was Daddy Dawald? [Daddy Dawald (RIP) was the basketball coach at Col-Hi for many years. Here's a picture of him with Gene CONLEY ('48-RIP): http://www.richlandbombers.com/classes/1940s/1948.html. Dawald coached our first Basketball State Championship Team in '58. Here he is with that championship team: http://www.richlandbombers.com/classes/1950s/1958.html Here's a LONG article about Dawald in the Herald. Others can tell you more about Daddy Dawald. Also, there have been THREE gyms at Col-Hi. http://www.richlandbombers.com/RHS-ThruTheYears.html 1st gym built in 1943. 2nd gym built in 1948 1st ('43) gym became the girls' gym. 2nd ('48) "new" gym was the boys' gym. 3rd ('64) "new" gym was named Dawald Gym. 1st ('43) gym was torn down when the 3rd ('64) was built and pieces of the 1st ('43) gym floor were sold but I never got my piece!! HA! 3rd ('64) Dawald Gym is now the boys' gym and 2nd ('48) is the girls' gym. -Maren] Floor torn up from (which??) school, and possibly installed ?? Knights of Columbus Hall?? Can anybody tell me about it?? If anybody has spontaneous mushy memories I could send a photo to where photos get sent (I am new to the Sandstorm. But ya forgot that the second ('48) gym was dismantled sometime in the early 2000s. This may have been the source of the MATTINGLY ('60-RIP) piece of floor came from. When the original Col-Hi gym was dismantled, portions of it were made into mechanical pencil shells. I am not too sure if those came from the floor as that gym was pretty much wood all around; floor, walls, bleachers and ceiling. Yes, a new gym was built in the place of the '48 gym. Where the original ('44) gym stood is the courtyard between the cafeteria and the gym complex. [The 3rd ('64) gym was not built "in place of" the 2nd ('48) gym... it was built next to it... and was built long before the '48 gym was ever demolished. 2nd ('48) gym was there for R2K -- that's where the alumni basketball game was played. Sure was HOT. -Maren] -Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) ~ Mount Angel, OR where the elementary, middle and high schools have gyms of their own. Not braggin', just sayin'. ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Earl BENNETT (Gold Medal Class of '63) Re: Gym Floors: Somewhere I, too, have a piece of the old Girls' Gym floor that were sold as a fund-raising effort, and a second one I bought went to a girl I had dated in Grandview (we reconnected by email a few years ago, and I believe she told me a year or so ago that she still has it - or at least that she still remembers it). I don't recall precisely what the proceeds were used for (possibly band or orchestra instruments?) I haven't framed mine yet, but I am closer to getting my workshop properly set up to make that happen, since my wife wants an enclosed garden and I'm building one from a kit we purchased from Gardens to Gro. Yesterday I learned that Dad's old radial arm saw can't be repaired because parts are no longer available - he made a complete set of white oak kitchen cabinets for Mom with it, I believe in the '60s (see photo [no photo. -Maren]). Our parents were amazing, not just hobbyists but producing essentially professional results outside their areas of career expertise (Mom - legal secretary but also community activist who helped get the YMCA built; Dad - amateur astronomer who built his own telescope, and cabinetry grade carpenter). Warmest Christian regards, ecb3 - from early spring weather in central Virginia: Second consecutive day of sunny mid-70s where we are starting summer vacation planning. -Earl BENNETT ('63) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Rosann BENEDICT ('63) Re: About Art Dawald (RIP) I think the "Daddy Dawald" moniker came more from Dawald's classroom than from coaching basketball. That's not based on much except a sense that some of the classroom antics inspired the nickname. One of the clearest memories I have of Dawald's Government class was his way of addressing female students. Instead of calling on a student by her first name, it was "Lady ALBERTOWICZ" or "Lady BENEDICT." I vaguely recall that male students were addressed as "brother" as in "Brother BARTRAM" or "Brother CLAYPOOL." I may be wrong on the guys; the gals were definitely "Lady." And we were seated alphabetically for his class. Another of Dawald's specialties was walking around the classroom with a lilt in his steps while we taking a test or absorbed in some desk activity he'd assigned. He made sure no one was misbehaving, talking, or cheating. Perhaps that's where the "Daddy" nickname came from. By 1963, the nickname was widely known and used. Maybe someone from earlier classes might recall when the nickname began and why. Dawald was a superb coach, but he was a good teacher, too. I still remember some of his government teaching. His goal was to make the critters he taught into good citizens, with understanding of how a democratic republic (and state and local) government works, and our responsibilities to it. Today there is a serious lack of civics education, and I think we are the poorer for it. As a former teacher, I look back in admiration to Art Dawald for a job well done. -Rosann BENEDICT ('63) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Brad WEAR ('71) Re: Stuff Mixed emotions, Texas Tech beat Gonzaga.
