Re: desperately searching for a resource
I've been looking everywhere for this and I can't find it
anywhere. I know it exists, because I've seen evidence of it.
I've looked high, low, behind the couch, under my desk. I've
gone to the shopping mall, the drug store, church. I've asked
most of my acquaintances and even strangers on the street.
No one has a clue. I know it exists because there's good
evidence that Maren has some in her possession. I'm talking
about the extra 4-5 hours that must be available in a 24-hour
day. I really need it!
Cheers

Been meaning to write in for some time to the Sandstorm, but
it is one of those things you keep putting off.
Anyway when everyone was talking about driving lessons, it
brought back good memories. I was taught by one of the
Richland police force also. The things you remember are hands
at 2 and 10 o'clock. That way you can make a turn very
quickly. It always made me conscious of gal friends of mine
who had both hands at the bottom of the wheel.
He also took me on the hill behind the Thunderbird (now Red
Lion to teach me how to stop on a hill and start without
sliding backwards. That really came in handy when we moved to
Seattle. Was still driving a clutch then. He also taught me
parallel parking which in turn I took my daughter and her
best friend (and 2 saw horses) down to Redmond library
parking lot and taught them parallel parking.
I love to drive, so does my daughter. We both find it very
relaxing, that's why I can drive to Richland and back in one
day with no problems. But then I do want to brag a little as
I am one of the people who transports a lot of the Emblem
Club gals around the state and one day I had a couple in the
back seat and the man told me I was a very good driver. That
made my day to have a man compliment me on my driving.
Also we are getting ready to put out the Spring edition of
the Dust Storm, so get your Club 40 dues in so you get a
copy, It has the menus and prices for the annual meeting.
There will be a form for paying dues and another form for
making reservations for the annual meeting.
Several classes are planning on reunions that week-end and
as Phil RAEKES ('49) reminded me earlier in the year this is
going to be class of 1949's 70th year. I sure hope we see a
lot of you this year.

I hope you all are not fatigued from the activities of
yesterday. After all, making the paper flower baskets and
putting in the flowers can be exhausting. To say nothing of
going around the neighborhood and hanging the baskets on
front door knobs. Or is that done anymore? Guess that must
have come from a quieter and gentler time.
On top of all the above, today we celebrate the natal days of
a Bomber Babe and a Bomber, both of whom I graduated with.
Like I have said before, the only confirmation of that is
from the graduation program as they both sat toward the rear.
A deep flourish of the ol' propeller beanie for Joan PHILLIPS
('54) and a tip of that same headpiece to Jack NICHOLS ('54)
with a "Happy Birthday!" to both. I'm somewhat certain that I
will see Joan at the "big" lunch come this September, but not
too sure about Jack. It would be nice if they could both be
there.

Re: Steering wheel hand position
Times have changed, they no longer recommend the 10 and 2
o'clock hand positions. This is because of the air bags.
Most driving instructors, the AAA, and NTSB (National
Transportation Safety Board) now are recommending 9 and 3
o'clock. That air bag is like a bomb and deploys the bag at
something like 200 miles per hour, you don't want your arms
to be thrown back at your face/body. This seems to be a
compromise because when I first learned about this they
recommend 8 and 4 but studies have shown while this is safer
for air bag deployment, it lessens your ability to control
the car. (I was uncomfortable with it, but not sure if I
even owned a car with an air bag at the time.) It is also
recommended you do not wrap your thumb around the wheel but
cup your hands on the wheel and rest your thumbs on top the
wheel. Also when making turns that you don't turn hand over
hand--this causes your arms to be crossed over the air bag.
You are supposed to move the wheel with one hand while it
slides through the other, then switch which hand is turning
and which lets the wheel slide. (I don't think I will ever
get used to doing that.)
My car has the steering wheel "spokes" at the 9 and 3
position so if I rest my hands on the spokes I am probably at
9:30 and 2:30. I have changed positions over the years just
naturally, no deliberate effort and now I generally use 7 or
8 and 12, probably the absolutely worst if air bag deploys.
I am driving along and think about this and change to hands
just above the spokes, but soon I am back where it naturally
feels best for me right now. I was just thinking maybe I
should tie a rag or something around the "high noon" position
and when I feel it go back to a safer position.

analog clock these days? How do you teach them 9:00

Re: Robert Franco, MD (RIP)
Dear Maren,
A good friend and I have been in Europe since April 8. We've
been all over starting in Amsterdam, Brussels and France,
before heading to London tomorrow for our last week. We had
lots of things to do and see however two were very important.
The first was seeing The Ardennes and a tour of the Battle of
the Bulge. We did that on a private 14 hour tour and saw
things I will never forget. The second was to go to St. Mere
Englise where Dr. Franco parachuted into Normandy on D-Day. I
will say with no reservations that Dr. Franco was one of my
heroes. He was so kind to me when he put me back together
after a terrible horse accident when I was 13. There were
other kindnesses - letting me interview him for an eighth
grade project, etc., long before I ever knew he was in WWII.
Kidney stones too! Yikes.
This morning we went to the 82nd Airborne Museum in St. Mere.
Imagine sitting in the theater and suddenly right before you
speaking was Robert "Doc" Franco. I nearly fell out of my
chair. I watched the film three times just to make sure it
was really him and to be able to get a picture.
http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Wor/190503-FrancoMD.jpg
To the FRANCO kids - I will never forget your father. It was
a privilege to know him and for one very brief moment to be
in his sphere. (I'm sure Mike ('70) can tell us more, however
I don't think D-Day was Dr. Franco's first major jump. Mike?
Will you tell us more?).

Dear Bombers
My Dad, Max Ehinger, Jr. and my brother-in-law, Ron Broze,
went on the Honor Flight to Washington, DC. Dad is 92 years
old, he is a WWII Vet. Ron is 72 years old, he is a Vietnam
Vet.
It was a fast & furious trip! They left Monday, 4/29/19, the
Plane left at around 7-8 AM. They got there around 4pm. Then
went to the motel. They got settled into their motel room,
had dinner, and then went to bed! Very long day for them.
Tuesday up at 0600. Had breakfast, then off to The Tomb of
the Unknown Soldier Changing of the Guard & the Changing of
the Flowers. They were on a bus that took them to all or most
of the Monuments. Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, WWII,
Korean, Vietnam Wall, Arlington Cemetery, Kenndy's Eternal
Flame monument. They were bused to the different sites, then
they WALKED! They had Fantastic time, but were very tired.
There was a delay, the plane was supposed to arrive at 6pm,
but didn't get in to Spokane until 9pm!
There were at least a 1,000 people waiting for them! This
surprised the vets as they had no idea that this was going
to happen! We shook hands & thanked them for their service!
I choked up when I shook a Vietnam's Vet's hand & thanked
him for his service.
This should have happened when they came home from the
Vietnam War! Not the hateful things people did to them! All
I know is this was one of the best things we do for All our
vets! Welcome Home Soldiers!! GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!

Re: airbags and hand positions
Have a family member who had to have plastic surgery from
the airbag deploying and her hands flying up into her face,
breaking her nose and her jaw---she had her hands at "10 and
2". My Kia Soul has "nubs" inside the steering wheel at "10
and 2" and I also have "bars" on the steering wheel at the "9
and 3" positions, but I keep my hands at the bottom of the
steering wheel, around the "7 and 5" positions, with my
thumbs on top of the steering wheel---I find that's a lot
more comfortable, especially since I have arthritis in
both shoulders, so holding my hands/arms at the "10 and 2"
positions put too much strain on my shoulders. As for
turning, I use just my right hand---am sure that's not the
safest, but it "works" for me and I have been able to keep
control of the car, so, till something drastic happens, I
will probably continue to do so.
Re: kids reading analog clocks---I don't even think that is
taught in schools, anymore. Sad that so many can only "tell
time" IF they use a digital clock/watch. We have definitely
"dumbed down" following generations.

Re: Dad (Dr. Robert Franco (RIP))
Much thanks to Jamie WORLEY ('64) for her note concerning our
dad and his role in WWII. There is a lot of information out
there regarding the 82nd Airborne 505th that Dad served in.
Dad made all four major jumps during the war: Sicily, Salerno
(Italy), Normandy and Holland. Not many made all four. I
remember him telling me that the first jump, Sicily was the
"worst" of the four. That was the jump that the troopers
ended up scattered all over the island. It was actually the
first combat paratrooper operation and limited navigation
ability and other challenges resulted in scattered landings.
I have also visited those sites and encourage all who travel
to Europe to take a little time to visit those areas our
parents' generation fought during WWII. To actually see those
sites made things quite amazing for me. Incredible people
accomplished incredible things during that time.
Thanks again Jamie, for your thoughts.

Re: Jim "Pitts" Armstrong ('63) Music
Several months ago our youngest granddaughter (who turns 8
in November), asked if we would come to her school's music
program scheduled for last evening. She attends a Montessori
school here in Mesa, AZ.
As a grandparent you automatically say yes regardless of what
the program consists of. Our granddaughter did tip us off
that they had been rehearsing old music for months.
We were totally blown away. With the girls in poodle skirts,
the boys in blue jeans and slicked back hair, they performed
a song and dance "Rock Around The Clock" routine that was
fabulous. Their songs included, Mr. Sandman, Splish Splash,
La Bamba, and Yakety Yak.
After thanking the audience for coming, they did an encore of
"Rock Around the Clock", at which time all the grandparents,
followed by the parents, stood up, clapped and sang along.
It reaffirms that our generation of music is timeless, and
after the months of practice, these kids will be singing our
songs for years.

Re: falling!
At 84, I don't have sure footing, though I had never fallen.
Well that changed this morning.
As I arose from my bed this am, I tripped and fell with a
crash. Some how I was able to get up. I stood there a moment
a bit dazed. as I made my way to the bathroom, I was startled
to find blood running down my cheek. I took my usual shower
and rinsed the blood away. I could tell it was not a
worrisome injury. But as I stepped from the shower my left
leg ceased working. Trying to get dried and dressed turned
into a major ordeal. I had to give up and change to some very
loose walking shorts I sat down to catch my breath and found
that I could not stand. The stiffness and pain in my left leg
was overwhelming. My left wrist was swelling like crazy. My
right shoulder was hurting and making it most awkward to use
my right arm.
I have an electric tilt chair so using a 4 wheel walker
made it to there. Several hours later I had to tinkle. One
problem. I was now too sore to get up. Scrambling like ants
on a watermelon, I eventually stood. But found that my
walking speed was in the same zone as the Tim Conway
character from the Carol Burnett show. Now it is 11:30pm and
I need to go to bed. Damn I know tonight will be a 3 time
tinkle alert night. Growing old isn't for sissies.

"Maybe someone has already mentioned this, but remember "The
Isle of Phyve" (spelling??) -- Randy Fullmer, Tom Peashka (I
think) and .... who else? And what was the name of the band
in which Keith Gosney ('66??) played? Also, the band Larry
Horne ('68) played in?? How much did those bands get paid for
playing at our proms, etc., in the late '60s -- anybody know?"
Nine months later, on May 7, 2001, Thomas Peashka was having
trouble sleeping. So he logged in and did a number of idle
web searches, including one for "Isle of Phyve" - indeed that
was "his" band. As a search result, he came across my
Sandstorm post, and sent me a nice e-mail - at 3:37 a.m.
We began emailing back and forth, and then talking on the
phone for long hours that summer. I was already in the middle
of planning a move to Spokane, which is where he happened to
live. So we met for the first time since graduation in 1968,
on August 18, 2001. We became friends, attended church
together, and eventually love grew between us. We were
married on March 17, 2004.
Thomas died August 12, 2015.
But every year from 2001 to 2015, we celebrated May 7th -
3:37 a.m. - as our "brought together" anniversary."

I have been searching all sorts of records (basically old

conclusion on. Just sort of looking for a tie in with regards
to a Bomber I knew from back then. Seems he is having a
birthday today. The only thing I have come across is the
group photo on the top of page 67 in the '52 Columbian. We
happen to be standing next to each other in the back row,
along with a few other "usual suspects."

Re: Back to the neighborhood
Getting close to my move date ... thinking about this story,
and decided to re-share it in detail. I'm also wondering how
many of you have moved back to your family home or childhood
neighborhood.
Like many of you, I was born at Kadlec. 5-7 days later (as
things were done back then) my parents brought me home to the
south (left) side of a B-house across from the then-standing
old American Legion building (which was on the south west end
of Lewis and Clark school grounds).
When I was 5, my folks bought an F house, just 6 doors north
on our same block. I started first grade living directly
across from the cafeteria of Lewis and Clark. (Always knew
when it was chili and cinnamon roll day early in the morning!
Yummy aromas!)
We lived there all the way through to the autumn after my
graduation.
Then my Mom died. Daddy and I moved immediately to a 2-
bedroom prefab. He just couldn't stand the big old F house
without Momma in it. I lived in the prefab with him for about
a year before launching out into the world.
Now rewind to when I was 2 - whole family in the B house
still. Our paperboy lived in an E house south of us, with
just another B-house in between our home and his. My sister,
Sally HATCHER Biggerstaff ('60), was 11. She took me down to
visit at his house, because he had pet bunnies in hutches in
the backyard.
Fast forward 5 years from then - whole family living in the
F house. Sally was 16, and had starting dating our by-then-
former-paperboy (and eventual husband), Richard BIGGERSTAFF
('58) - who was and always has been like a big brother to me.
(He was, in fact, the first person to openly discuss with my
17 year old self, that my mother was probably going to die of
her then-mysterious illness, in an effort to help me prepare
for that). At about the same time our folks bought our F
house, his parents bought their E house.
Almost immediately Dick's father, who was a master craftsman
and carpenter, with Dick's help undertook the expansion and
remodeling of the main floor and remodeling of the basement.
Mr. B went back to their family farm in Nebraska several
times, bringing loads of black walnut back to Richland with
him. He used much of it in lining the closets, putting in
built in bookshelves and custom kitchen cabinets, etc. Then
he sided the entire house in black walnut.
Dick's parents stayed in that house until both had died, at
which time Dick and Sally bought out his siblings' interests
in the property, and moved in - in 1993. They have owned it
since then, with one or another of their sons living in it
casually, off and on in for the past 15 years, after Dick and
Sally moved to Goldendale.
Now fast forward to today, 68.5 years from when I was born at
the beginning of this story. I'm packing (Ugh!), and Dick has
been working like crazy for the past several months, bringing
the house back up to snuff - as it's about to become a true
family home again!
Next Tuesday I'll start sleeping there, and will spend the
remainder of May settling in there, and cleaning out the West
Richland fixer upper house to which I moved a year ago from
my Idaho farm.
My guest room will also be my grandkids' sleepover room. And
I look forward to hosting many happy family gatherings there
- and old and new friend gatherings as well.
So - the house has been in our family since the government
first sold it. And as of next week, I will have come full
circle back to my childhood neighborhood, living just 3 doors
south of my first home, and looking out my front window again
onto Lewis and Clark's south west playground.
This makes me happy.

Now, as for today's birthday person of note; well, there

Re: Queen of Outer Space
Yesterday I watched the movie "Queen of Outer Space" with
Zsa Zsa Gabor, which is generally regarded as a bad movie.
Sometimes I like watching bad movies because they can be very
entertaining. Some of the things they put in them are so dumb
a third grader would ask the film makers, "What were you
thinking?" This movie wasn't all that bad, but it wasn't all
that good either.
I also like to watch old movies with futuristic stuff either
like Q makes for James Bond, or movies set it the future, but
now we have passed that date in real-time. A lot of those
things we now have, but they are done in a much different
way. The 1958 movie "Queen of Outer Space" is about
astronauts crash landing on the planet Venus, a planet
occupied by beautiful women; never mind that the temperature
on Venus is hot enough to melt lead. However, they amazingly
got one thing right, perfect in fact. They have a modern flat
screen TV with the same, or close to, the aspect ration of
modern TVs, and a remote control to boot. I did not delete
the movie, thinking I might take two pictures of this TV for
a Sandstorm entry, but then I thought someone else must have
seen the thing. I went googling and found a site including
two photos showing the TV, you can click on the pictures to
make them bigger, only real difference is; theirs is made of
gold while ours are made of plastic. Saves me from taking the
photos, editing them, and Maren posting them, just a link.

Thank you for your entry yesterday. I especially liked the P-51
part. When my husband flew jets in the Navy, I always wanted
to go for a flight. (He later flew 747s for Pan Am, so I did
get to go up with him in a jet, just a giant one.) Anyway,
when I was turning 50, I had just finished cancer treatments.
He tried to surprise me with a jet flight, to no avail.
Instead he knew a fellow who had a P-51. We flew to
California supposedly to visit sister Judie ('63), and we
walked up to a P-51, decorated with balloons, etc. The pilot
asked if I got air sick, etc. as Gary told him to go ahead and
do acrobatics, as I would want a "Real" ride. For one hour, we
did loops, rolls, strafing runs on buildings, etc. It was one
of the best experiences of my life.

I'm sad to report that my sister, Karen LACY Roberts ('78)
passed away this morning, May 15, at home in Olympia.
She had been diagnosed with breast cancer 10 years ago and
then almost five years ago with metastasis to her lungs, bone
and brain. She enrolled herself in hospice this past January
and was able to be at home until the end due to the loving
care of her husband Doug (NAB) and her 14 year old daughter
Jadan.
Karen spent her life helping others. With a degree in Social
Work from WSU and a teaching certificate from Seattle
University, she volunteered and worked at many social
agencies in California and in Washington. She taught ESL
classes at Tacoma House before becoming a full-time mom and
school volunteer. While in the Bay area, early in the AIDS
epidemic, she was one of the few who volunteered to take
hot meals to patients when many would not go near these
individuals. She will be missed by the many she has touched.

Here we are, beyond the halfway point of the month of May;
and a bunch of the Girls of '54 are whooping it up at the
Richland Applebee's. Just go easy on the ribs.
On top of that, it is the birthday of a fellow classmate.
Think I might have had a class or two with him over the
years. Certainly know who he is, and definitely hope he can
make it to the Big Lunch come this September 7th
A tip of the ol' propeller beanie and a "Happy Birthday!" to
Garth WHEELER ('54), who may or may not have been friends
with Wayne MOSS ('54). I doubt, however, that if it were so,
they put on a cable TV show from a basement.

Interesting, and I just might have my facts straight for

who first sent a team to the World Series in 1980 and then
again in 1982 when they defeated Taiwan for all the marbles

D_5067-Football - October 1944
As to picture of football players, I remember Jerry BLANEY
('49-RIP) very well. 8th grade and on through high school. He
lived just on the corner over a block from the McClearys and a
couple houses down from me. He did come back one year for A
Club 40 reunion. He was still good looking then too!..
As to #17, there is no way they could be related. They don't
even look like relatives. #17 is much bulkier, large nose and
rough facial features.
I pulled out high school year book and an old photo album of
mine and had a good bunch of memories.
Jean WILLIAMSON ('49), Doris PALMER ('49-RIP), Bev KELLER ('49)
Petra ODMAN ('49-RIP), Julia GILES ('49-RIP) ... lots of
pictures of us in the park. And you look at how many of them
we are all hugging and hanging on to each other. Boy is this
day and age we would all be charged for sexual harassment!!
(ha!) That long ago, we were just good friends hanging out
together and no worries in the world!
Re: Now back to driving cars
My steering wheel has bumps on it. (or curves) the top of
the bump is at 2 and 10, the bottom of the bump is at 3 and
9. I've tried putting hands on both places and driving for
over 60 years with my hands at 2 and 10 I find it very
uncomfortable to move the hands lower. I wonder if part of
it is my height, and the seat arrangement. I keep trying to
go to 3 and 9 and it just does not feel comfortable. (so
let's pray I don't get into an accident where the air bags
come out and hit me!.)

To: Our Col-Hi Marines alumni
Maren, I was sent the following attachment and tribute from a
very special Marine friend. He never lets me forget that the
Corp represents a very special band of brothers who are linked
by a unique history. While this tribute belongs to all Marine
men and women. I want to personally thank all Marines who are
alumni from Columbia (aka Richland High School). Thank you for
your service.
Re: Return to Makin Island
A true story about 19 marines killed in the Gilbert islands in
1942 (defending against the Japanese). They had to retreat, so
asked the islanders to please bury them so the Japs can't find
them. Years later, they checked and found a man who had been a
teenager then and remembered where they were buried. They sent
a C130 and an honor guard over there and found all 19 had been
buried with their helmets on, their rifles in their hands, in
perfect condition. The islanders had really done a wonderful
job. As they were loading the bodies, a voice from out of
nowhere started singing The Marine Hymn" ... gave everyone
goose bumps. Turns out, the voice was from a man who spoke no
English but remembered a song the Marines taught him when they

Re: Bomber Softball
The girls ended their season with a 26-1 record. After
playing three games on Saturday (losing only to Lake Stevens
6-3) they tied with the Redmond Mustangs for 3rd place. The
game between Richland and Redmond was not played due to the
late game, so the two teams decided to share the 3rd place
State 4A WIAA Softball Title. Not a small feat by any means!
Jackson defeated Lake Stevens 16-2 to take 1st place, with
Lake Stevens taking 2nd place.
Congratulations Lady Bombers!!!

formerly part of the parking lot for the Federal

Re: 2019 Memorial Day
Happy ... wait a minute. That is not exactly the word I am
looking for. Maybe, may you have a reverent Memorial Day
weekend.
There has never been a president that did not kill our
children and/or our loved ones, So, be careful with your
speak. Myself, I might not have been in Vietnam long, but I
remember too well the screams and horror of that place as
an eighteen year old PFC 0311 in the Marine Corps. That is
basically a Rifleman looking for people to kill. I only speak
for myself. There are too many Bombers who have witnessed
worse. And they are my heroes, and they hate that word because
we are still alive, trust me.
I can only say in witnessing what I can recall from surviving
five weeks of the screams, amputations and gangrene of Fort
Drake, Japan (it was razed after the war - govt did not want
to talk about this place) - look that one up - and the other
ten months in Bremerton Navy Hospital - I was beyond so lucky
to have a thirty six year old orthopedic surgeon wanting to
put me back together.
The Veterans Administration kept calling the Bremerton Navy
Hospital asking about me. Dr. Amber would keep telling them
I was in post op and could not be moved. I would at times be
called into his office to discuss my dilemma. A PFC talking to
a Commander in the Navy, a surgeon. He told me one time I had
enough shrapnel in my body to make a dash board for a '57
Chevy. A joke, of course. (see photo).
I have never talked to a shrink about any of this. So, those
of you that the 100% PTSD and the service dog, God Bless
you. But, I just want to make it in no uncertain terms before
I go away that -- 1.) I could have gone to Canada and years
later been pardoned so I could come back into America, no
questions asked, 2.) gone to prison for five years - not like
my hero Mohammed Ali, of course - "I have no issues with the
Vietnamese people." - Nor did I and 3.) Be drafted into the
Army.
I graduated high school on June 11, 1967. On my birthday, June
24, 1967, I joined the Marine Corps.
To more than half my generation I want to tell you for the
record to go **** yourself. And may your children and
grandchildren ask you - what did you do during those years
grandpa? Because the next war I am going to sit at home like
you did and watch your children and grandchildren ... like
you did me.
By the way, I am a great grandfather of a five month old.
Happy Memorial Day

Re: Time to pay!
I'm getting ready to pay my annual subscription fee to the
Sandstorm. I'm doing this as a post here, as a little reminder
to others.
Also I'm asking Maren to repost her mailing address, confirm
if it's the same as in the past, & confirm the annual cost.
[Nothing has changed. Still $24/year and I've been
posting my snail mail address in the first issue of
every month. -Maren]
Also asking Maren if she still wants checks only, or does
she accept PayPal or Zelle?
[NOT PayPal. When I opened my PayPal account,
it was FREE... when they started charging a per-
centage for every transaction, I closed my account.
I had ONE request for Zelle and it was WAY more
trouble that it was worth to me. MOST banks do
offer a free service where they will send an actual
check for you... My bank calls it "ePay"... and I
RARELY write an actual check these days. People can
try ePay. Otherwise, the old standby: a check. -Maren]
The Sandstorm is probably the best bargain in our lives!
Thank you, Maren!

After recovering from the events of yesterday; I guess I
better send in more than "something."
Well, here it goes. There is a Bomber birthday to celebrate
today that may be worthy of note. I have before alluded to the
fact that he was one of the powers that pushed the Scholarship
fund to fruition. He wasn't one of the starters... that honor
belongs to Dick McCOY ('45-'46-'02-RIP)
A tip of the ol' propeller beanie and a "Happy Birthday!" to

put a candle or two on your birthday cake.

Thank you for posting about the Makin Island story and sharing
the video URL. I found the video haunting and reassuring all
at the same time. I loved the island voices singing and the
fact that all 19 marines were recovered. The dignity and
respect with which they were buried says a lot about the
people of Makin Island. I thank the Marines for their
sacrifice, the islanders for their honor and the group (CILHI)
that returned the Marines to home soil. R.I.P.

Re; What war does to people
I echo David RIVERS' ('65) thanks to Rick MADDY ('67) for
Rick's honest, raw, and powerful statement (5/26) about the
truth of life during and (especially) after war for a person
who has been there. And I think David is right - "the real
problem is... we can never get back the only thing we truly
want. Our Lives".
I don't speak to this from direct experience, but from what I
have seen up close and personal in the lives of family and
friends - and what I have seen in the lives of many, many
patients in my psychiatric practice through the years. And I
DO know personally that there is a different but very real and
very difficult impact on those who care about those who have
served in wars.
The venue and parameters of the battle change, but the battle
continues for so many people.
I pay respect, and I carry sorrow for the unspeakable costs
and pain.

Sorry, no war stories today from this correspondent.
I have something more important to divulge. Today is the
birthday of a Bomber Babe of my acquaintance. As a matter
of fact, I believe we both graduated at the same approximate
time. Now, as to whether or not she was an influencing factor
in my signing up for an art class at Carmichael is still open
for even more conjecture.
A deep flourish of the ol' propeller beanie and a "Happy

Re: Not all military casualties are combat related
While serving in Europe I had two Helicopters go out from
under me. One lost a tail rotor at 500 feet coming out of
Bamburg, Germany. We survived but the impact still caused
enough damage that my spine finally gave out and after two
surgeries I can no longer walk.
The second was a main rotor hit the ground and a piece of the
rotor went through the fuel tank and the fire melted the
bubble cockpit before I could get out. I was covered in melted
plastic. My flight suit and helmet saved me.
In addition, while flying helicopter ambulance I saw things I
can never forget like a 2 year old boy run over by a deuce and
a half or a tank commander cut in half by two tanks.
I am almost 81 years old and these things still haunt me.
