Crikies... .two (2) issues with nothing but "Maren's Malarkey".
You can do better than that, people. I know, I know, you're
all following the adage "if you can't say something nice... "
Don't really have anything to say, but thot I should get
this in as today is a holiday and I not sure that e-mail is
delivered. Especially if you subscribe to one of the weird
ones.
Have a nice hol, every one. For those of you who are on the

Re: Stufff
I've been remiss, it was opening day for dove in Texas today.
I've been distracted a little lately. Turns out several of
our alumni are battling cancer again. One significant '65er
and two of us '71 grads.
The other '71er I was fortunate to go from kindergarten
through WSU with!!! Go Cougs!!!!
I recently (two weeks ago) had a 10 hour cancer surgery that
was supposed to be a minor pre-cancer surgery. Turns out
it was full blown cancer in (of all places) my lower lip.
Luckily I had an oncologist who was a plastic surgeon as
well. Two fingers wide surgery later I'm 99% sure they got
it all.
I'm still kissable according to my significant other!!! Go
figure!!! Like James Brown sang, hey, kiss myself!!!! Huh!!
Seriously, I'm 99% sure they got it all. I'll have a final,
final on Tuesday!!! Not too worried. Like I said, never say
die
Going dove hunting tomorrow!!!!!

Re: '62's Birthday Party
I've decided to attend the '62 birthday party this month
rather than the club 40 annual meeting. I'm not sure my
health will hold up for the 60 year reunion, so this may be
my last time to see my fellow classmates. If my health is up
to it I may try to make next year's club 40 meeting.

I'll have my quadruple heart bypass surgery on Sept. 19. The
surgeon said it should help restore my energy. Being tired
all the time is my biggest problem right now.

Boy, are the days dwindling. Next Friday the annual Club 40
Meeting starts. Looked at the guest list and it seems there
will be at least 30 members of The Class of '54 in attendance
at some time or other. And Marilynn ('54) said there will be
at least 50 for the Big Lunch. Not sure if that's classmates
or a total including spouses and/or significant others.
Got a younger Bomber to acknowledge on his birthday. Knew him
from back then, and have spoken to him now and again at Club
40 Meetings.
So, a "Happy Birthday!" to Richard JOHNSON ("55). Just hope
he has learned his lesson and doesn't try to drink Canada

Happy Birthday late to Linda LESTER ('62) [on 9/2]... hope to
see you at our joint 75th birthday party on the 13th of this
month.
To: David DOUGLAS ('62)
Glad that you have decided to attend our birthday party.
Prayers for your heart surgery on Sept. 19th.
You may remember my cousin, Bob CROSS (also '62) had this
surgery done a few months ago and he is doing well, although
sadly he didn't feel ready to travel to our joint birthday
party, even if I drove him. (in fact if you change your
mind, Bob, we could bring you to the Tri-Cities on the 12th
when we see you, and I'd drive you back the next day after
the Atomic Frontier Day parade at 10am). You could discuss it
at your scheduled doctor appointments if you feel up to it!!
But I think lack of energy was Bob's complaint before his
surgery, and he says he's able to do more every day doing the
exercises they suggest following surgery.
I am looking forward to my trip home (to the Tri-Cities, I
leave tomorrow; will stay with my brother Roy ('65), and get
to see his kids including his grandson, and I will venture
over the mountains to visit some WSU (non Bomber) friends we
have known for years, and also I will get to see Carole
JOHNSTON Berg ('62) who will not be able to attend our 75th
bash, as she is scheduled to start teaching that next Monday.
She is thinking of retiring after this year, or at least I
would hope she would demand more of a part time schedule.
I'm also looking forward to attending the Atomic Frontier
Days parade. I still love parades and go to them when I can
find one!!
Bomber Cheers from SE Indiana where thankfully we had a lot
of rain this past week, turned our parched lawns green again.
Prayers for those in the Bahamas where that hurricane got
stuck. And prayers, it burns itself out far away from US
shore. We have several anxious friends in Florida wondering
what it will do, including Wayne MYERS and Lyndy WHEELER
Myers (both '62). Hope you make our birthday party!!

I sometimes wonder about you readers. We had an "almost"
nothing but enlightening entry yesterday. And we didn't have
to put up with Maren's Malarkey. So why don't some of you
take up the slack and send in a story or two. They can be
like the Junior Gyrene's ('65) tales of the past albeit
extended in what happened.
On the other hand you can join with me in celebrating the
birthday of Bomber whom I knew and is a fellow classmate. If
he is out and about, you can't miss him as he is a rather
tall dude. Doesn't seem to have changed much since

>>From: Terry DAVIS Knox ('65)
I'd somehow survived the nuclear holocaust, but was badly
burned and the doctors didn't think I was going to make it.
They had me laid out on a mattress pad inside a glass capsule
that was warm and quiet and actually pretty cozy. My wife and
daughter were in similar capsules across the room somewhere,
and the doctors, followed by the camera, were supposed to
pass by my capsule, look down at me through the glass lying
there, then move along to the capsules containing my wife and
daughter, where they'd stand at designated spots alongside
the capsules and carry on their scripted conversation about
what to do with our bodies once we died. Or something like
that. Since I didn't have any lines in the scene, I hadn't
bothered to read the rewrites when I'd gotten to my hotel
room the night before. It had been very late and id been very
sleepy, and I was STILL very sleepy the next morning, lying
there in that glass capsule pretending to be a man who was
going to die a few pages later in the episode. Very sleepy
and very cozy.
All I was supposed to do was lie there very still with my
eyes half open, and when I felt the shadows of the two
doctors and the cameraman pass across my capsule, followed
by the sound man holding his boom mike out over the doctors'
heads, I was supposed loll my bandaged head towards them and
open my eyes wide as though frightened and in pain.
So...
"ROLL SOUND! CAMERA... ACTION!"
Here they came, pausing for a moment beside my capsule to
consult their clipboards as I lolled my head and opened wide
my eyes in pain, then the doctors, cameraman and boom man
moved on past my line of sight and began filming the
conversation over beside my wife and daughter's capsules.
So far so good. I'd timed my head loll just right, so that
they didn't have to cut camera and start all over again
because of me---which would have cost them about 40 extra
minutes of expensive studio time and would have irritated the
high strung director, whose main priority was to finish the
part of the scene involving the two doctors talking beside my
wife's capsule before lunch. Time is money.
Now that I was off-camera, all I had to do was lie there in
my cozy capsule for the rest of the scene---about 5 minutes.
Or maybe a little longer. In my warm little bed ...
"MR KNOX! ... MR KNOX!"
Someone was rapping sharply on the glass of my capsule. It
was the sound guy with his boom mike tilted downward and one
of his earphones askew, pulled away from his ear. He was
pissed.
"You're snoring, Mr. Knox. We picked it up on our mike. We
gotta reset and go again from the top."
I guess I'd gotten too comfortable three pages before I was
supposed to die.

Next weekend Richland is sponsoring Atomic Frontier Day to
celebrate the 75th anniversary of B Reactor's start up. A
parade, recreation of Hanford's mess halls, historical
displays in the community center... a number of booths are
planned in Howard Amon. In addition children of DAY'S PAY
will be in attendance. On that note they will be presenting
information on their fathers' experiences. The first
presentation will be at WSU's auditorium on Thursday, 12th,
afternoon the second will be in the Richland Library on
Friday the 13th Photos of the period will be on display the
13th. We have a few surprises in store for them, I believe
you will enjoy watching that experience.
Photos were taken at Debach Airbase. Day's Pay crew flew

Day's Pay. Funny thing is on the co-pilot's side of the plane
is called Missouri Mule. There is more to that story, to know
more about it you'll have to attend one or the other event.

Well, I trust everyone survived the weekend. Sorry to have
missed the Big Lunch on Saturday, but there was something
about the chicken dinner Friday at the Club 40 Annual Meeting
that didn't quite agree with my wife's stomach. She was able,
however, on the Saturday morning to eat a cinnamon roll at
the Spudnut place. I like to think it helped her recovery.
There is a pair of "older" Bombers celebrating the
anniversary of their nuptials today. When they did the deed,
if brought together two separate septs of their clan. Let the
pipes be played in their honor.
A "Happy Anniversary!" to Stan and Dorothy (both '53) on this
occasion. Hope you have many more.

Where did the junior high age students (7th, 8th, and 9th) go
to school before the junior highs were built? 1949/Carmichael
and 1951/Chief Joseph? We arrived in 1945 and I need to know
where my oldest brother and sister went to school. They would
have been about 12 & 13 at that time.
{OK, John Ball, Spalding, Jason Lee, and Christ
the King are out of the picture since they all
opened AFTER 1945. Grade schools that have 8th
grade class pictures online are only Lewis & Clark
and Sacy. Don't have 7th or 8th grade pictures

Actually, Carmichael opened for its first full year,
splitting with the high school its class of freshman... for
instance, brother Tom ('53-RIP) and I and Hal GIBSON ('53)
went to Carmichael, but Jack SINDERSON ('53) went to the high
school for his 9th grade... since we graduated in '53, that
would have been '49/'50... Chief Jo opened later than '49...
it's pretty obvious when looking at all of us today, that
SINDERSON ('53) got the short straw... just saying.

Re: Class of 1954 member
Some hard news to report, but need your help... our friend
and classmate David KOEPPEN('54), is MISSING!!
David came to Club 40 this past weekend. Was here both Friday
and Saturday and was at our 65 year class reunion luncheon on
Saturday afternoon. David flies his own plane and did so this
weekend to Richland. He did not return home on Sunday. His
family filed a "missing person" on Tuesday. The Richland
police called me Tuesday night near midnight asking if I knew
of anyone at the reunion who might have talked to David about
his flying and plans.
This is where I need your help!!! Did any of you classmates
talk to David this weekend, or have any recollection of
discussing which airport he parks his plane at. None of the
airport have a record of him flying in or out of their
airport. He stayed at the Red Lion and they can find out when
he checked out but not knowing where he rented a car from. IF
ANY OF YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS OR WOULD REMEMBER A CONVERSATION
THIS YEAR OR LAST WITH DAVID ABOUT HIS PLANE AND WHERE HE
FLIES INTO, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I WILL CONTACT THE RICHLAND
POLICE DEPARTMENT.
The FAA on Wednesday (9/11/19) was sending out search planes
to follow the route to Fruitland, Idaho where David lives!!!
Praying they will find him with his plane, alive and he
simply is in an area with no phone signal. And... that he is
okay!!
Thank you for your help!!!!

Regret to report a very sad outcome of my Sandstorm entry
from yesterday!!!
I received a phone call today (9/12/19) from Fruitland
Electric, David's company, in Fruitland, Idaho, informing me
that his plane has been found and Dave was found deceased!!!
Plane was found in the mountains southeast of La Grande,
Oregon about noon. It has been recovered and taken to a town
nearby so they can investigate what might have happened.
Dave's daughter, Lisa was informed. His wife is deceased.
David's 83rd birthday would have been today, September 13th!!
I ask that if anyone has recent pictures taken at the Club 40
celebration this past weekend, please give me a copy, so I
can send to his daughter. His company has asked that a '54
class group picture be sent to them... which I will do.

Re: Celluloid Lies
We broke out of the treeline and ran out into the clearing
and headed towards our chopper. It was about 70 yards away
and waiting for us out there in the high grass with its
blades already moving, ready to lift off. By the time we were
halfway across the clearing, the VC came spilling out of the
treeline after us, firing their weapons.
There were 6 of us, and I was in the lead, huffing and
puffing. I was quite a bit older and fatter and slower than
the other guys, but I was in the lead because the script said
I was in the lead, and if any of those young fools tried to
run up past me towards the camera that was mounted alongside
the door gunner there in the waiting chopper, I'd smash them
in their knees with the butt of my M-16---and they all knew I
would, because I'd done it before. An unwritten law there in
that particular little Hollywood jungle was that you never
get between me and the camera. There are few things more
dangerous on a movie set than an old actor pretending to be
young.
So here we come running across the clearing towards the
camera. From over our approaching heads, back towards the
treeline, you can see the VC gaining on us. At the side door
of the chopper, I step aside and let my guys scramble onto
the chopper. Then I step out into the middle of the camera
frame and turn facing the VC charging fast towards me across
clearing.
Just me Just me Just me,
kind of thing.
I raise my rifle and fire a quick burst of three shots, and
two of the VC fall dead.
Then I fire again and shoot the stunt man, Grant Iwada, in
the chest. Grant was a scholarship gymnast at UCLA and now
makes a very comfortable living getting killed in movies and
on TV. When I shoot him in the chest today, he does a kind of
back flip and lands on his side, dead, with one arm flung out
over his head. For a moment there, lumbering onboard the
chopper, I think I notice something out of place about
Iwata's outflung arm---a glitter of something---But the
chopper is lifting off. And up. And away.
The trees below grow much smaller, etc.
Whew! I'm still huffing and puffing. That was quite a scene.
One long, single-camera master shot with no cut-ins, no
edits. Actually a hellofa shot, by TV standards. We are all
very pleased, and no one more pleased than I, who was, after
all and more or less, the hero.
"Aww SH*T!" shouts Becker, one of my guys. "Sh*t." He has the
walkie talkie and is communicating with the director back at
base camp.
"What?" I yell over the loud thwak of the chopper blades.
"We gotta go back and shoot it again," Becker shouts.
The chopper begins its decent.
"Why?" I rasp at him.
"I don't know," he shouts back. "Something about one of the
stunt men wearing a gold Rolex."

Re: Tell them now
I echo the thoughts of Pat UPSON Tervooren ('49) in the
9/15/19 Sandstorm. Tell people NOW of their value in your
heart & your life!
I am absolutely amazed at the fact that I'll be joining most
of my class at age 69 next month - some are already 70.
My class ('68) was square in the middle of the "don't trust
anyone over the age of 30" rhetoric. For reasons that are too
obvious to require explanation, I now chuckle over that
concept.
Last night I was thinking random thoughts. It crossed my mind
that a near-universal epitaph could be "Wow! That sure went
by in a hurry!"
Anyway, I'm going to make it my personal mission to email,
write, text, message, online post, tweet, call, or in person
share the love & thanks with everyone still on this earthly
plane who has positively touched my life. Open appreciation
seems like a very worthwhile hobby! You might want to
consider joining me.

Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) always speaks of
uncontrollable fire and smoke damage when a class mates

Well recently I was at a birthday celebration for a wonderful
lady who had just turned 105 (RIP) on lighting all 105
candles made with a cheap wax the smoke billowed up like the
glory hole well igniting. We were at the best restaurant in
town. The alarms went off everyone had to evacuate according
to restaurant procedure. The fire department came. No fire
just candle smoke.. was hilarious watching the firemen ignore
us as to cause of the alarm and went full dress with air
tanks and all in to the now smoke free restaurant. Riremen
looking all around for a fire to extinguish and none existed.
Talk about Irate, But it sure capped an evening of fun for

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who planned and executed
the '62 birthday party. I decided to come to it as I wasn't
sure my health would allow me to go to the next reunion.
Seeing friends I've known since kindergarten was amazing,
wrinkles and all. I wouldn't have missed it for anything.
[Glad you made it back safely and thanks for the
lunch on your last day in Richland. -Maren]

Re: 75th Groupie Birthday Party
Not much on these pages, yet, regarding the late great 75th
Birthday Party in Richland by members of the class of '62...
So, here's one cut at all the festivities. It was gratifying
to note, for example, that the class of '64 thought to
decorate our main event with their own concurrent 55 year
Class Reunion. Also, hats off to Richland as a whole for
scheduling a parade down Jadwin Ave., again surely as part
of our 75th Birthday Party.
There was also some cheap talk, too, that the real event for
the City was the 75th anniversary of the firing-up of the
B-Reactor (September 1944), but this seems a bit fanciful.
But, then there was the parade which was ticketed as a
restart of the annual Atomic Frontier Days Parade which
began back in 1948. Now, this gave me pause, since I remember
well the first parade...
I recall at the age of four being planted on the front-row
curb to take in all the excitement. One of the most memorable
displays back then was a couple of yellow Piper Cub double-
seat airplanes. There they were, right there in the middle of
River City, rolling along down the pavement with wings that
reached clear across nearly from one curb to the other. And
with an important-looking man at either end with hands up on
the wingtips and eyeballs scanning and clearing the curbs for
anyone who might be endangered by such a daring parade
"float."
This weekend, or course, no one was to be outdone by any past
parade. Shorter, and no six-shooter cowpokes on horses, but
good enough. Off to the side the latest-version hook-and-
ladder truck extended the ladder skyward into the clouds
directly over the Jadwin Ave. centerline-suspended from which
was Old Glory about the size of a "Col-Hi" (not Richland
High!) gym floor. Then, beneath the Stars and Stripes comes
the parade including a nostalgic fire truck near the front,
all polished and with a ye-olde chrome-plated siren mounted
on the left fender.
Several marching groups, some with majorette flags twirling
here and there in unison. A band. A long line of non-gloss
green military vehicles including a half-track on rubber
treads. Miss Richland in one car and in another a real-live
and white-haired Rosie-the-Riveter, a convertible no less.
So, Richland put a face on the town-history thingy, and this
continued at Amon Park... For the unread, some narrative
stuff from a microphone under segmented ellipsoid stage
covering, faced by rows of filled folding chairs. Local
politicos plus two or three we-think-you're-wonderful
recorded messages from absentee national politicians.
But, then, the highlight for yours truly-other than meeting
lots of friends throughout-was the flyover down the River by
three obsolete fighter jets together with a centerpiece B-25
Bomber. Not a B-29, but a reminder of the thirty or so B-25s
led by Jimmy Doolittle when his daring group launched from
the aircraft carrier USS Hornet in 1942 (bombers on a one-way
mission from off a short aircraft carrier flight deck, in
rough seas!)... Making the rounds in Lewis & Clark Elementary
School during my fifth grade (1954-55) was the book "Thirty
Seconds Over Tokyo." So, here was a low-flying B-25, as from
the namesake ship for the successor aircraft carrier that I
served on in 1967-'70.
But, back on the ground and the earlier parade. I noticed
some four-year old tykes taking it all in just as I did at
the first such parade. I found myself contemplating the time-
warp of seventy-one years. The twinkling of an eye. And, as
for the whole broad history thingy, during the flyover I was
joined at the water's edge on the swing chair by a random
geezer and his wife -new to the area from Wyoming only six
years before. But, already well-read on Richland history
(including three books on the Manhattan Project) and well-
seasoned by a recent B-Reactor tour.
Spanning the generations, here was a whole new set of folks
at the Amon Park Fair. Great little chat on the swing as the
planes went by overhead. No personal tie to the original
Atomic Frontier Days, but still an unbroken connection. The
wife mentioned something about the need to teach more history
in schools-it might restore "some respect," she said.

Re: Class of '64 - 55 year reunion
The 55-year reunion for the Class of '64 was splendid! My
wife, Sherrie, and I think it might be the best ever. Maybe
it's because so many years have passed, and yet we're still
sharing that common bond that is Richland. Jamie WORLEY's
('64) talk was superb, and right on the money. We "come
together not for the class but for the town". Because if it
was not for the town, maybe none of this would be happening.
And that's what people in other towns will never understand.
A town that was Norman Rockwell's America, a town with
virtually no crime, a town where you didn't need to lock your
door when you weren't home, a town where mothers could send
their children off to play with the only admonition, "be home
for supper". But most importantly, a town where the stability
and longevity of employment led to so many of us going to
school together from kindergarten through high school
graduation. As Jamie said, she comes to be with "people I've
known all my life". So good and yet so rare. I think the more
years that pass between us, the more we treasure these life-
long acquaintances and friendships, the more valuable they
are to our emotional well-being. For me, these reunions have
been anchor points through the long years, stringing together
our vastly different life experiences, yet uniting us in that
common unbreakable bond that is Richland. I pity those who
don't have this to treasure. We are so incredibly grateful to
the reunion committee for a memorable weekend. The effect
will last for months.
And I'm personally grateful to all those who bought my books.
I was overwhelmed.
Take care, old friends; we want to see you all next time.
Until then. . . .

There are two Bomber Babes having natal celebrations today.
I had hoped that one or more would have showed up for the
celebration of being "out" for 65 years or the Big Lunch. One
lives in "Ol' Virginny" and the other lives in Cal. Hey, if
Bob JOHNSON ('54) can drive out here from NYC, what's your
excuse?
A deep flourish of the ol' propeller beanie and a "Happy

Re: Curt DONAHUE ('53)
Curt has been a fairly regular contributor to our Sandstorm.
He has been widowed twice in the past approximately 10 years,
but his faith has remained strong.
On Thursday, 9/19, he suffered a stroke which left him not
knowing "basic things" - which I interpret to mean where he
was, what happened, etc. He also has significant impairment
to mobility on his right side.
He is hospitalized in Kennewick at Trios. The eventual plan
is to transfer him to a facility that can provide the
physical therapy and occupational therapy that he will need.
I know that Curt has offered up many prayers on behalf of
Sandstorm members, and their friends and family. I think it
is our turn to pray for him. If you are not a praying person,
please consider sending good and positive energies his
direction.
None of his kids or grandkids live locally. His sister is my
life-long friend, Marcia DONAHUE Topping ('68), who now lives
with her son's family in Renton, but is presently visiting a
friend in Texas. I believe the closest blood relative he has
locally is a niece plus her husband, who have some serious
medical issues of their own and are unable to be out and
about to help Curt. His second wife's son seems to be taking
point on things.
If/when I learn more, I will report back here. (I am getting
my information 3rd hand, so I don't know any more so far than
what I have written here).

Re: Federal Benefits for Vets, Dependents & Survivors
https://www.va.gov/opa/publications/benefits_book.asp
"This is [your Vets Info friend] again wanting to
share a few things with you. Recently my aunt age
88 called to ask me some questions about home
care for her, as an elderly spouse, of a Disabled
deceased Vietnam Veteran. Good Question. She has
been receiving her husband's disability income,
but after researching this for her, I found in
this booklet Federal Benefits for Veterans,
Dependents and Survivors 2018 edition, that she
may be eligible for additional income for Home
Care. Interesting is that she could be eligible
for monetary income for home care if her husband
was a veteran prior to 2001. However, if he had
been a veteran since 2001, she would be entitled
to a Home Care person.
Why am I sharing this information with you?
Purpose is to get you veterans to obtain this
free booklet from Veterans Administration for
yourself or to share with other veterans. So many
benefits defined in this 68 page booklet. Yes,
you can review these benefits on line by going to
VA.Gov. However, there are many veterans who live
up in the hills, out in the Plains, where there
is no Internet, etc. You get the idea. Many are
home bound and unable to get on Internet. Also
Amazon sells this booklet for $6.00 .
Note: As a veteran you are entitled to some
benefits, However, think about your Spouse or
Dependents, they may also be entitled. Did you
know if you are disabled vet, your children can
receive free college tuition? Remember the old
song "It's In The Book", well here's the book."

I appreciate that we are all concerned for him. But as I
said in my initial post, I don't have any other information.
I'm not an "insider" in this situation.
Curt's sister, Marcia ("68), posted it to her Facebook.
She lives in Renton, but is in Texas, visiting).
Their cousin (I think I mistakenly said "niece" in my first
post) forwarded to me a text she had received as a forward
from HER sister. It originated with Curt's stepson, who I
don't know at all.
I posted in the Sandstorm, because I knew there were people
who would want to know & want to be praying for him. But I
really don't have any direct way to contact the stepson. And
I don't know Curt's mailing address.
One Bomber read my post, and went to see Curt today (Sunday).
He emailed me that Curt would appreciate phone calls and
visits. So you might want to try calling him at Trios
Hospital in Kennewick.
It's great that Bombers are so supportive of and caring

Curt will be doing his post-stroke rehab at Lourdes in Pasco

Re: 2020 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race
http://www.iditarod.com/ - Official Iditarod Site
163 days till the official start on Saturday, March 7, 2020!
Only thing "new" is that 5 more mushers have signed up since
the initial sign up in June... one rookie and 4 veterans..
Total of 45 teams.
?THE LAST GREAT RACE ON EARTH®?
You can?t compare it to any other competitive event in the
world! A race covering 1000 miles of the roughest, most
beautiful terrain Mother Nature has to offer. She throws
jagged mountain ranges, frozen river, dense forest, desolate
tundra and miles of windswept coast at the mushers and their
dog teams. Add to that temperatures far below zero, winds
that can cause a complete loss of visibility, the hazards of
overflow, long hours of darkness and treacherous climbs and
side hills, and you have the Iditarod. A race extraordinaire,
a race only possible in Alaska.
From Anchorage, in south central Alaska, to Nome on the
western Bering Sea coast.
It has been called the ?Last Great Race on Earth®? and it has
won worldwide acclaim and interest. American film crews as
well as film crews from around the world have covered the
event. Journalists from outdoor magazines, adventure
magazines, newspapers and wire services flock to Anchorage
and Nome to record the excitement. It?s not just a sled dog
race, it?s a race in which unique men and woman compete.
Mushers enter from all walks of life. Fishermen, lawyers,
doctors, miners, artists, natives, Canadians, Swiss, French
and others. Men and women each with their own story, each
with their own reasons for going the distance. Hundreds of
volunteers, men and women, students and village residents all
help to organize and stage the event. They man headquarters
at Wasilla, Anchorage, and Nome. They fly volunteers,
veterinarians, dog food and supplies. They act as checkers,
coordinators, and family supporters of each musher.
Bomber cheers,

Re: Football!
Maren! if its possible for you to obtain the information
regarding Boise St. football games, could you include it in
the game line up you do weekly? Here in the outback of hell
that information seems to elude the local fish wrapper. I do
so enjoy watching the play. (especially on that Smurf Turf.)
[OK... tomorrow Boise State has a Bye. -Maren]
Re: One Hit Wonder
As to Jim "Pitts" ARMSTRONG's ('63) selection of "Mission
Bells" by Donnie Brooks, I fine it more than amazing that it
ever made it out of the production booth. A tune more than
beaten to death with all its only slightly renovated melody.
Of course that was a time when music took a hiatus for that
inane semi rock rhythm. and worse of all sung by such an
anemic voice. NO ELVIS there.

the stone fruits are plentiful and oh so delicious.

Hey Jim ARMSTRONG ('63), my one hit wonder pick is Los Bravos
a Spanish beat group: Black Is Black (#4 on hit parade).
Although the Standells (from L.A.) had 3 charting 45s, I have
to mention their ode to Boston: Dirty Water (#11). We are in
Boston vacationing and have Red Sox vs Orioles box seats
Friday evening.

Hi Bombers!
It's been a long time since I wrote in, and yet I read Alumni
Sandstorm every day without fail. What I love most are the
personal stories that people share. Thanks for your
contributions, friends!
I retired from World Food Programme (WFP), a UN agency, for
nearly a year and a half. It was mandatory retirement, a
little earlier then I would have preferred to stop work. I
returned home to Kampala, Uganda after serving three-and-a-
half years in Khartoum, Sudan. I'm a counsellor, so I both
started a private practice and joined an international group
practice with former UN colleagues. Then I got a phone call
from UNHCR, a sister agency to WFP, asking whether I could
"help out" for six months. As most of the UN counsellors know
each other, that was no surprise. What was surprising was
that I said "Yes"! They wanted me to cover their Asia and the
Pacific Region, which meant moving to Bangkok, Thailand for
six months. Then the six months become eight, then 11, then
14, and now it appears that I'll wrap up and return to
Kampala early next year for "re-retirement".
I'm sharing this because I know that quite a number of my old
classmates are now in process of entering retirement for the
first time. I'm thoroughly delighted to see many of them
following their dreams! At least three couples have bought
motor homes and toured the U.S. Others have done cruises to
Alaska. Two others have taken European tours. Some have
bought nice new homes nearer to their grandchildren. And I'm
proud of them all!
The work in Asia has taken me to places I never thought I
would see--Malaysia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Iran,
Pakistan, etc. I've also slipped in some long weekends to
places like The Philippines, Vietnam, and Cambodia. In our
Richland childhood, my brother ('69) had an annual
subscription to National Geographic waiting for him each year
under the Christmas tree, and so each month we had a window
on the world to many exotic places. There have been many
highlights to these past 16 months, but I have to admit that
watching the sun rise at Ankor Wat actually brought tears
to my eyes. It's far more beautiful than even National
Geographic could depict, despite the hoards of tourists!
Two weeks ago I spent my 65th birthday flying into a country
I never expected to see, Iraq. There's something about
visiting a place and meeting the people that is simply
unforgettable. The first ten days I was in Iraqi Kurdistan
and met colleagues who are Kurds, Shia'a, Sunni, Yazidi, and
Chaldeans. All lovely people who want to live their lives in
peace. I've often wondered where the rogues of the world
live, because I only find good and hospitable people wherever
I go!
Today I'll wrap up a training in Baghdad, then tonight I'll
fly home to Bangkok with a suitcase full of dirty clothes and
a mind filled with amazing memories. The world will seem a
little nearer and dearer and far more wonderful because of
these two weeks meeting many good people in Iraq.
Bomber cheers,
-Vicki OWENS ('72) ~ Baghdad, Bangkok, Kampala

This last Wednesday, Serena Kendall, the current Richland
High School Cheer Team coach shared information with me
regarding the upcoming RHS Cheer Alumni night at the
Homecoming game on October 4, 2019. She then sent me an email
with an enclosed "flyer" with some information about the
Alumni event and a person to contact. As I understand, they
want former RHS Cheer team members to be present and included
in the evening event. If you are interested I encourage you
to contact the person shown on the flyer to learn more and/or
register.

Happy one day late birthday to the highest ranked elected

Benton County Prosecutor, Andy MILLER ('71) on 09/27. I would
make a gratuitous reference here to Hamilton Burger, but I
think Andy wins all of his cases... maybe he is the Perry
Mason of DAs.

Re: Day's Pay - Seymour Deutsch
To: All Bombers
Friday the 13th [9/13/19] the Richland Library 5 children
who's fathers were crew mates on Day's Pay. Stories were told
about their dads' missions over Europe. The evening was an
intimate affair. Folks in attendance were taken by those
shared stories. One of the bright spots was Ginger Sather who
donated a days pay 75 years ago. Her insights, stories of
Hanford and quips kept us all very entertained! I told the
crowd I would send anyone who wanted a copy of Allan Cohen's
diary.
