For two years in 1964 and into 1966 I was in the Army stationed in Germany. My wife was able to secure a job with military family housing as she was not an American and was fluent in both English and German. Along with the American officer and enlisted man who ran the operation, a number of Germans were employed there and German was commonly spoken. One other girl worked for the Army and there the odd circumstances began. The girl was married to an Austrian who was from Vienna; my wife and I had met in Vienna a few years prior. My wife had been born and raised in Sweden, a Swede. The girl's name was Cindy Schwede, the German word for Swede. Both ladies were born on the same day in 1943: the 31st of October-Halloween. I've experienced a number of other odd coincidences over the years but I think this is as odd as they come. -Dale ENNOR ('59) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Pete BEAULIEU ('62) To: Helen CROSS Kirk ('62) Re: 62LC6th-Lester http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Bea/191028-62LC6th-Lester.jpg Helen: The class photo really is very high resolution. Inexplicable. The photo itself is only a little over 3" by 4". It Xeroxed very poorly for an enlargement that I was going to mail to Maren (I do not have a scanner), but the team at FedEx Office ran the original through an "enhancer" before loading the new image onto my thumb drive. Amazing results for about two dollars. And, yes, in the photo #26 is likely "Charlene Goodenow" (Maren: take note!). To: David DOUGLAS ('62) David: You have to stop relying on others to help you keep track of your high school harem! But since you ask, I have dipped into my memory banks and can offer you this lead. It was during one of our senior year Calculus classes (Calvin Gentle's class) that one of our clan brought a visiting friend to class. You were seated in front of the second row and the day-visitor took an empty seat in the back of the first row. She was introduced as none other than Mary K. POORE. Can't remember whether you jumped onto your desk in euphoria or not (maybe that was a different time, ho, ho, ho). Mary K. was introduced as living in Prosser at the time. Take it from there, Romeo... -Pete BEAULIEU ('62) ~ in Shoreline, WA with the steel-trap memory of trivia, some of which is actually true. ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Terry DAVIS Knox ('65) Re: Inherit the Wind http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Dav/191101-Inherit_Wind.jpg We open tonight and run 3 weekends. To each and every one of Maren's devoted readers, we need help! My beloved great-grandson, Jacob Norton, age 25, suffered a massive brain aneurysm on Sunday afternoon, October 27! He has also had two major strokes!! Any recovery will take months!! The family is asking everyone we know to please pray OR have healing thoughts for Jacob! One critical request at this time is that the brain swelling will go down, and begin the rejuvenation process! A second major need is for him to begin being able to hold his head up! He is a fighter and seems to be trying to help, but the odds are not very good at this time. His wife, Dana, and two sons, Zeke and Braelyn, are having a rough time and could also use encouragement. We would love it if people could often send healing thoughts his way - not just once, but on into the future. We really need a miracle for him! Thanks for reading this - and helping us! -Betty BELL Norton ('51) ~ Richland ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Dave HANTHORN ('63) To: Terry DAVIS Knox ('65) Re: Richland Players My mom , dad, and I were all in the Richland Players' original production of 'Inherit the Wind' back in the early 1960s. I think it is cool that nearly 60 years later the Players are doing it again and that somebody I know is taking part. Dave, you made my day!!! Tere SMYTH Wilson '65', Maren's sister from the old Perkins neighborhood, remembers you well and is coming up to see the show. She'll read today's SandStorm and yelp gladly at the coincidence. You played Howard, the 14 yr-old kid with the fishing pole and rubber worms who opens the show. You also steal the scene from me when you take the witness stand in the second act. (W.C. Fields used to say: "Never work with kids or dogs.") I'll see if I can dig up one of those old programs and take a picture. There's a poster from that production on the wall in the upstairs dressing room, I believe--in what used to be the Stiles family's living room, back when they managed the Uptown and Richland theaters. My best to you, Dave, Re: Inherit The Wind http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Dav/191028-Inherit_Wind.jpg Richland Players What follows here is a brief reminder that our show opened last Friday and will continue the next two weekends, with added shows at 2pm Sunday afternoon I'm never sure if people really understand how local theaters work, generally speaking--how they stay alive. The awkward little crab dance mating rituals they do to catch the eyes of potential theater-goers out there in the local pond. You've seen posters in windows and on walls around, say, Uptown Richland or on the bulletin boards at Fred Meyers. Well, of course you have. Turns out, my special advertising territory for the Players is the Richland Bomber alumni newspaper. Just sort of worked out that way--even though I'm honestly and oddly not very good at it. My problem is I get too excited and enthusiastic sometimes. If I'm in the show, or if I really like the show, I can actually turn people off by wagging my tail too hard. I used to have the same problem on blind dates in college. I was often overwhelmed by my own sense of how important it was to convince my date that I was a thoroughly decent and clever fella. Looking back, I cringe with embarrassment over a couple of those experiences--the look of puzzled sympathy on their faces. Rather than be impressed, they felt sorry for me. Over the years, I've more or less managed to outgrow those behaviors, but this next paragraph might represent a serious relapse: I really like this show. It's really a very good show. And I really want you to come see this show. There. I said it. And remember, if you honestly don't enjoy the show, I'll cover the cost of your ticket. I figure that's the least a gentleman should do on a blind date gone wrong. On December 7, 1941 they left New Caledonia for their destination of Auckland, New Zealand and a couple hours into the flight received a radio message that Pearl Harbor had been bombed. Too dangerous to fly back to the United States the way they came so they had to continue on around the world to get back to the USA. Here is a link to "The History Guy" telling the story. In the 1990s a former colleague (Howard Lovering) invented a second career as a museum consultant, after serving for many years as the first executive director of the Boeing Museum of Flight in Seattle. For a couple million dollars (routed to engineers and such) he had the Spruce Goose disassembled in California and barged north and then up the Willamette River as a display attraction at its final resting place. Earlier in 1970 and as a local government functionary, Lovering saw that I got hired for my first job after leaving the Navy in 1970. I became a gainfully employed minion at the Snohomish County Planning Department during the "Boeing Bust" economy ("Last one out of Seattle, turn the lights out"). He insisted "hire a vet" and my resume prevailed over countless others probably more qualified and I settled in for a lucrative $700/month. Also-now regarding the Pan Am Clipper video-the first president of Pan American Airlines once-upon-a-time owned and lived in a grey, three-story house about a half mile northwest of the University of Washington campus. As a penniless graduate student, years later in 1972, I landed there in one of ten carved-out apartment units (all different), on the second floor and down the hall in back. One room, plus a small closed-in sundeck area with a sagging floor as a narrow and cramped bedroom/ kitchen area. Shared bathroom down the hall. The original heat registers were rusted solid on the inside. No heat except my fire-trap plug- in radiator. I left the milk on the table one winter night and found it frozen the next morning. The first weekend after I moved in, I was out of town and returned to find the door-jam splintered. But I owned nothing of value and missing was only a poorly-hidden $60 bankroll plus a cheap tape deck radio and a portable black and white television. They missed my Canon camera and lenses hidden in the laundry box and chose to leave my Navy OCS commissioning sword (the grip gold plated, and ivory rather than the later white plastic). Housing anywhere in the U-District was hard to find, and this hole-in-the-wall in a decent neighborhood was worth every bit of $80/month. -Pete BEAULIEU ('62) ~ Shoreline, WA about five miles north of the Pan Am three-story residence. It is about the Scopes Monkey Trial. They've outdone themselves with this one. We are so fortunate that this hometown boy has come back to us. As I've gotten older, feelings surface at inopportune times when I'm speaking about men and women who served and those families who lost them. I'm still using Microsoft's Live Essentials Mail 2012, which Microsoft obviously doesn't like. This week I opened my email program to see that I had 930 unread emails since the previous evening. For some reason, Mail 2012 likes to restore emails that I deleted, sometimes several years past. This time (it's happened many times before) the oldest one was 2015. I have a separate folder for members of a writers' critique group I belong to - 9 members in the group. Saturday I had 780 unread emails. Fortunately, it's easy to find them. The great risk hovers over Sandstorm-land that somebody will fill the vacuum with military nostalgia. This time, less than two weeks after the Veteran's Day release of the new "Midway," here it is, one of those drawn out Navy sea stories... Two details in the movie especially caught my eye... First, the fine casting and scripting of Admiral Nimitz, commander in chief of the Pacific fleet. Very capable in real life and a true gentleman (not indicated is the fact that throughout the entire war Nimitz wrote to his wife--every single day.) Now, second, and without giving anything away, there's a technical error in at least one scene. Two planes take off from a carrier while the headwind for airlift was actually too little to support the take-offs. The first plane dips down to the waves but does manage to get airborne. But not the second which drops off the port (left) bow. The pilot of the first plane radios back, "turn to starboard!" Wrong command! -by turning to starboard [right] the ship's hull would slide forward and swing over the ditched plane and the downed pilot-just as it then did in the movie. Also, a second danger of then being sucked into the ships propellers. I mention this split-second detail because of how this exact situation played out on the aircraft carrier USS Hornet in 1969... Yours truly (with one and a half stripes) was the Officer of the Deck when we also lost a plane over the port [left] bow. The four-stripe commanding officer was on the bridge. On the right-side catapult the plane was not hooked up correctly. Instead of breaking free for launch at maximum tension, the connecting device pulled loose early and at an angle and the plane was sent diagonally to the left before dropping mediately out of sight off the port [left] bow. And just as the plane dropped overboard the pilot instinctively ejected, up at a weird angle and out of view, from deck level only 60 feet over the water. As in the movie, we went right full rudder (!), but in this case the error was actually a good thing. The pilot came down post haste in his half-opened chute. Hit the water hard enough to sustain a compressed disk, but was fished out by the helo plane-guard and later checked out for a full recovery. As in the movie the plane was gone under the hull of a fast-moving 40,000 ton ship, and went down in probably 10,000 feet of water. Later, from the launch films it was confirmed that had we slammed the rudder the correct direction (left instead of right) the ship's superstructure would have pivoted directly underneath the descending pilot. Would have gotten impaled some 200 feet above the water and fried to a crisp in the antennae and radar electronics. The maneuver in the book for this one-in-a-million situation would have been correct, but this time wrong. All this in a few seconds. That's near the Defense Language Institute/West Coast Branch at the Presidio of Monterey, where Uncle Sugar's Air Force had me learn my career-initiating Arabic language skills - a very good year, at age 20-21! My class was there for 47 weeks and our teacher from Alexandria, Egypt, introduced us to some colloquial Egyptian as well. However, today the basic Modern Standard Arabic course there is a 63-week assignment, and any dialect training requires another assignment of several months after the basic course or later in the career. Unfortunately, since then, my approach to the 17 mile drive is no longer available. It was on my Honda 250 trail bike up the hill beside the Presidio and across a short dirt path at the top; there are now guard rails along the 17 mile drive roads up there that wouldn't allow me to do that - I checked last time I was out in California some years ago - and all usable entries to the 17 Mile Drive involve gates and fee- collecting booths. If you are a golfer (I'm not, but Dad was) you should also check out Pebble Beach Golf Course, site of a major 2019 tournament; might have been the Masters. I recall seeing one hole that's right beside the 17 Mile Drive where you must loft the ball high enough so that it won't roll off into the ocean when it hits the green. That hole might be one of the photos at: Pebble Beach Golf Course The Lone Cypress is another iconic feature of the 17 Mile Drive, and it's pictured at that same web site - it appears to be growing right out of the stone promontory. It was a sad moment to learn that my friend Ron STULL, Jr ('66-RIP) passed in May this year. A surprisingly calm drive up I-5, then 101 north to Alderbrook took me to Ron's memorial in June. Beautiful weather and black top granted me reflection on our years as buddies. In high school and during summers we played golf, goofed off and had too many laughs. When Ron got mad he laughed. Life was fun to him. We did not stay in touch after I joined the army. In the 1990s I learned through a golf pro friend that Ron was head professional at Sand Point Country Club in Seattle. Within days Ron had me partnered in a pro-am tournament at Pumpkin Ridge near Portland. What a time. Ron's Brother Steve ('69) played practice rounds with us. This was before Steve went on to a successful stint on the European Senior Tour. In the several years that followed, Ron invited me up to Seattle to play the private clubs that he had access to as a PGA professional. I cannot remember them all. I stayed at his home and his wife Katie is a loving treasure. Sitting in a waiting area perusing an old Golf magazine I saw mention of Kyle Stanley, a touring pro. Kyle's home course was Canterwood, a private course near Gig Harbor. I now remember, Ron and I played Canterwood and it was wonderful. I loved to hear Ron talk of his life journey. The most recent time we played was at the Home Course in DuPont. He brought along two of the young pros he was mentoring into the profession. One went on to play on the Asian tour. I am so disappointed Ron and I had not connected in recent years. I arrived at Alderbrook for Ron's memorial early. Parked overlooking the Puget Sound on a sunny day, I dialed my old blues buddy, Errol. I had known this humble Vietnam veteran for over 20 years before I learned he had received 2 bronze stars for heroism under enemy fire. He was a medic, like me. He went to Vietnam, I won the lottery with a Korea assignment. Errol was exposed to Agent Orange and is the poster person for all the horrible after effects. Parkinson's, a unique type of diabetes and more. His disabilities total up to 350%. The VA seems to treat him well. I plan to stay in touch with my buddies. Ron did the Bombers well. Check out this memory of Ron posted on the Washington State Golf Association site. Many of the persons quoted attended and spoke at Ron's memorial. The rooms were overflowing with friends from all over the state. There was food: pizza and chocolate chip cookies, Ron's favorites. Ron, I miss you. You were so generous to me. I'd attempt a rejoinder, since I attended WSU for 3 semesters then completed my degree at UW after four years of US Air Force - maybe another day - but my blower needs attention from professionals so I can finish the leaf- clearing project. I received the replacement part yesterday, but the drive shaft on which it mounts requires a five-sided rod - which, of course, I don't have - to hold it in place while unscrewing the nut. Since I already have too many single-use tools for which I'll never have need again, I'm giving up on this one. Why couldn't they have designed it for a common-sized hex-wrench, of which nearly everyone has multiple sets? That would have made it a ½ hour repair. That almost overcomes my inclination to believe that no one would intentionally design something that the normal user, no matter how handy, could fix with ordinary tools. I considered using pliers to hold the shaft but didn't want to take a chance on damaging the shaft with the teeth. Perhaps I should bring this concern to the attention of Troy-Bilt? As everyone was finishing their dinner, a kindly looking Lady began serving dessert - a slice of cheesecake! Though the slices were small, they were topped with cherry syrup. When the lady came to coach Pete, he half jokingly said, "I don't think anybody would mind if you gave me two slices of cheesecake." "I'm sorry sir, but it's one slice per person", came the reply. Just mildly irritated, the coach wolfed down his cheesecake. He couldn't help but notice that some patrons declined their dessert and it appeared that there were several extra slices of cheesecake. When the lady server again came around, the coach asked, "I wonder if I could have one of those extra slices of cheesecake?" "I'm sorry sir, but it's one slice per person", was again the response. This rebuke hit a nerve and the coach was now really mad! Thoughts raced through his head; Does she know I'm the highest paid public employee in the state! I'm the key speaker and I can't even get an extra dessert! This isn't Boise or Pullman, it's Seattle! He resolved to confront "this peasant woman", but was mindful not to create a scene. As the working-class folks began to clear tables, the coach surmised that the noise level was such that he could speak with his nemesis without causing a stir. When the server lady got within earshot, he leaned over and said, "Do you know who I am?" "I'm sorry sir, but I don't know who you are". "Well ma'am, I'm the guy in charge of the Husky football program", said the coach. After an awkward pause, the server, with hands on hips and looking directly into the coach's eyes said, "Do you know who I am?" I fell down about 4 steps (maybe 5) leaving s-i-l's house after Thanksgiving festivities around 10pm. I can already tell I'm gonna be SO SORE by tomorrow... Wanna get this Sandstorm done, take some aspirin, lie on the heating pad, and sleep... Can't believe I did that... and I was being SO CAREFUL, too... had hold of the railing and everthing... The outside light went out and I had just said "Who turned that light off?" as I was FEELING for the next step down with my foot... (Light is on a motion sensor).. anyway, my foot slipped on the edge of the step down -- there's a landing and a 90° turn for the remainder of the steps down -- and... well... down I went... all the way to the bottom... Stacey and Abby were both behind me and both about had a heart attack. My Mom would have said that I went "ass over tea kettle"... I know I did a roll... legs prolly went everywhere flying through the air... prolly was pretty funny to watch... sure wish daughter, Stacey and g-daughter, Abby hadn't watched it... Now they're really gonna worry... And I said "Well sh*t" (several times) as I kinda rested myself before I tried to get up. Think I landed on my right shoulder... even skinned my right knee thru my jeans!! NOT BADLY... just a little skinned knee. I kept telling Stacey "I'm OK"... I don't think she believed me. -Maren SMYTH ('63 & '64) ~ Gretna, LA ~ 64°F at midnight ******************************************* ******************************************* That's it for today.
