Always been confused why so many denizens of Richland had 2 names! (Trisha Pritikin, Anna May WANN, Bob Carlson, etc), I had enough just to keep up with one name. Had a few friends who acquired a new name due to Legal or Illegal reasons! just don't see this Hanford folks in such need. The location of the bus lot in North Richland was right next to all the Old Barracks where I relocated to as soon as I turned 18. The trailer house was just too small with mom, dad, and me living there. As I recall the buses were numbered and you were assigned a bus when you started working behind the fence. As each bus went to its own location, getting on the wrong bus even by accident you can get your nose under a rock! You sure didn't want to ride to White Bluffs if you worked in 200 West. But I did not care for work out there, so I relocated to Sodom & Gomorra (LA [I wonder if he means L.A.? -Maren]) to see what the real world was like. It's not worth the trouble so stay where you are. -Rex HUNT ('53wb) ~ from lovely downtown Hanford, CA where over night it turned so cold, you could be like the monkeys in Zamboanga. (forgive me Hogey Carmichael) in joke for us old timers. ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) Re: Hanford busses As I recall; within the city of Richland the gummint operated busses that either went to the Main Bus Lot or the 300 Area. Both of these cost somewhere between 5 and 10 cents per ride. They may have gone as far afield as West ("by god") Richland, but I have no knowledge of that. From the Main Bus Lot, the buses ran to the individual areas (except, perhaps, the 300) and were free to ride so long as you had the proper credentials. You could also drive to the Mail Bus Lot (plenty of free parking but sometimes a long walk to and from the terminal). The whole shebang, plus motor pool was located on the west side of Stevens Drive just north of the By-Pass junction. The other alternative was you could drive to work to any of the areas. You might get your car inspected coming or going. I did drive to 2-West on those Fridays that I went to Seattle for the weekend. Out the north gate and be sure to observe the speed limit whilst driving through Moxie City. There was an inter-city bus that ran between North Richland and Pasco. This bus, for whatever reason did not go into downtown Kennewick. That house was right in front of the Main Bus Lot for the areas. We kids used to play out there. My dad taught me to drive his '36 pickup truck in that bus lot. It was located right between Chief Jo and Jason Lee. We lived in a Pre Cut. Playing hide & seek in the Bus Lot was a lot of fun. But even my dad had to walk a couple of blocks to catch his bus to the areas. My mom worked for Hanford (GE) at the bottom of the hill from the high school (past the swimming pool). But, of course, there were what seemed like hundreds of cars in that Bus Lot. -Shirley SHERWOOD Milani ('62) Sent from my iPhone ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Leoma COLES ('63) Re: Happy New Year Wishing all my Bomber friends a very Happy New Year! So hard to believe another year has gone by and my grandaughter will be graduating from High School in June... I have 2 grandsons, one in California and he's 14 and super soccer player!! My other grandson is 4 and quite a character. I live with the teenage girl and 4 year brother, my daughter and her boyfriend. It keeps me busy and I love being part of their busy lives. I hope to get back to Richland in the fall of 2020, especially if there is some sort of get-together for us old folks... While in grade school, my dad caught the bus on the corner of Fitch and Douglass. I also lived on the corner, but a small distance from the intersection. Curt DONAHUE's ('53) side yard ran down a small hill to the intersection. (he lived on Fitch) and my front yard was right next to his yard on Douglass. My cat, Smokey, waited for my dad each day when he was on day shift and walked him home. Like I said, we lived right there. Funny how he knew it was time for the bus. He didn't do that on the other 2 shifts that I'm aware of. After moving up to Cedar, next door to the Beardsleys in 7th grade, I don't know where he caught the bus. I just never paid any attention from then on. A side note: Smokey, my cat, walked me to school in the early year of Lewis and Clark. He didn't walk me all the way, but a good distance. I want to say "Happy New Year" to all Bombers everywhere. This being the last day of 2019, I'm thinking of all the new chances that we have for a new beginning. Also, a new decade. Funny, I've not ever thought about the decades before. -Carol CONVERSE Maurer (Magic Class of '64) ~ Kennewick ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Susie DILL Atlee ('64) Re: Happy New Year Everyone HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone in Bomber Nation and all FOBs (Friends of Bombers). I don't know about any bus lot..... My dad met the Hanford bus at the end of our block, the corner of Longfitt and Sanford Ave. It picked him up there every morning and dropped him off every evening. He would walk in the door to our house at exactly 5:00 pm every night. We were to be in our seat at the dinner table when he walked in the door. He would come in, set his lunch pail on the counter, wash up and sit down to the dinner my mom had prepared. Once in awhile, we were allowed walk the half block to Longfitt and meet him at the bus. -Shari NAPORA Bennett ('67) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Betti AVANT ('69) Re: bus lot The main bus lot for the Hanford buses was on Stevens, just north of the stores building. My late father just had to walk around the corner to catch the bus. Until about the mid '60s he rode the bus. When we needed a second vehicle as mom was also working but in town we got another car. In Dec. of '65 he was driving with others in a carpool when he got rear ended on Stevens, so much for our Christmas trip to Centralia to visit relatives. I did the B-reactor tour in August as part of my 50 year class of '69 reunion and prayed they had better buses now since they had no air conditioning. The only ones I recall were cream-colored with a burgundy colored trim. -Betti AVANT ('69) ~ Richland ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Jim DAUGHERTY ('70) Re: Hanford Buses My Dad rode the bus to work. We lived at 1505 Cottonwood since I was about 4 years old till I joined the Navy after graduation (1970). We would try and meet Dad when he got off of the bus, but we never knew what stop he was getting off. He had two choices, the corner of Birch and Cottonwood or the corner of Birch and Torbett. We would usually be on our bikes and would find him before he got home. We usually stayed close to home after he got home, as dinner would soon be ready. The buses would go all over Richland and then return empty to the bus lot on the bypass highway. We lived on the shelter belt side of Cottonwood and when I was in my late 30s, after getting out of the Navy and moving back to Richland, I told my Dad that me and my friends used to throw rocks at the empty buses. Not sure if we ever hit one. I thought he was going to get up out of his chair and swat me! So much for telling Dad what I did as a kid. Not sure when, but my dad jumped the fence at N Reactor and went to work for Washington Public Supply System (WPPSS) and then he could no longer ride the bus. All the guys on the shift would carpool. Sometimes Dad would drive by himself as most of the guys he worked with were much younger and he didn't like their music. They would tone down the music and Dad would carpool again! -Jim DAUGHERTY ('70) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Gary TURNER ('71) Re: Busses http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Tur/200101_bus.jpg My dad worked in the 300 area and car pooled to work every day... different carpools for different shifts. The entrance to the 300 area was just before the barricade so it was the only area available to private cars. I remember the huge bus lot and adjacent parking lot out on Stevens next to JA Jones, as well as the familiar burgundy and tan buses on many neighborhood streets. The Reach Museum has one of the old buses on display outside the main building... Re: Hanford bus memories We lived at 1320 Stevens drive and my dad would catch the bus at one end of the block. My brothers Terry ('54, '55, '56) and Allen, Jr. ('60) would meet the bus when dad got off and he would share a slice of home made bread with Karo syrup on it from his lunch bucket. My dad was able to walk out our back door (708 Van Giesen), across a large vacant lot to get to the bus lot to get on the proper bus. When we moved to the country in 1950 (before West Richland was created) he had to carpool to the same lot. There were no buses. I do not know when they moved to bus lot out past the By-Pass. When he started having trouble with his back he started driving to work over Twin Bridges and through the Yakima barricade and it was quicker than having to wait at the bus lot. I think he was at the N reactor by then. His back was better but he missed his half hour nap each way. For years when my folks would travel anytime he would get on a tour bus he would immediately fall asleep. He had so many years of going it on the cream and burgundy buses. -Margaret EHRIG Dunn ('61) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Bill SCOTT ('64) Re: Busses I grew up one house from the corner of Jadwin and Symons. Dad rode the bus to work at Hanford, and we were fortunate to have a bus stop directly across the street. And coming home, the bus let him off directly in front of our house on our side of the street. Never was quite sure whether there actually was a bus stop there or the driver let him off in front of his house as a favor. Dad would always come down the bus steps to the ground with a big smile and a rolled-up newspaper in his hand as we waited in the front yard for him during the summer. Never once did I see him with a lunch box, so I don't know how he handled that one. As I've no doubt written before, Mom and Dad had fixed up our white house to look like a New England- style cottage, replacing the gummint windows in front with a cross-hatched small-pane window. At Christmas, we would always drive up into the hills around Spokane and obtain some pine branches which Dad wired onto a hula hoop, making a very large wreath with a bow at the bottom, which was placed on the outside of the house with a spotlight shining on it, to present a cheery holiday scene to the men standing across the street stamping their feet in the snow. I have no memory of ever seeing the bus lot on the Bypass Highway, but then I didn't get out much, being very much a homebody. There were large stretches of neighborhoods in Richland I was never in, notably the pre-fabs. Speaking of which, two writers have recently mentioned growing up in a "pre-cut" house. I've never heard that term. Were those pre- fabs by another name, or something different? [Check out the "Houses That Hanford Built" page: http://hanford.houses.tripod.com/ The pre-cuts were letters "U" (2 bdrm) and "V" (3 bdrm). NOT the same as pre fabs. -Maren] Does anyone remember the bus service lot kitty-corner across the street from the Chief Jo tennis courts? For many years when I was growing up the remnants were there, long concrete- lined trenches in the earth partially open to the sky. I assumed those were trenches the buses would drive over for oil to be changed or for other underside service operations. If anyone knows more about these, please enlighten me. -Bill SCOTT ('64) ~ from rainy, chilly Rockaway Beach, Oregon, where we suffered through a 27-hour power outage the week before Christmas. ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Terry DAVIS Knox ('65) Hey! We made the news! Friend of mine from Houston just called. Said he was watching NBC Nightly News and saw something about piles of tumbleweeds blocking off HWY 240 for 3 or 4 hours. Had to use snowplows and workers with day-glow vests and gloves and city- issued pitchforks to clear off our old By-Pass for traffic. But the fix is only temporary, because the tumbleweeds will be back and because the tumbleweeds never went away in the first place. I thought they had, but they hadn't. In 6th grade at Jason Lee I sat over by the row of classroom windows that looked out across the vast playfield separating the school grounds from the seemingly never-ending stretch of sand and sagebrush and rocks and more sagebrush between the town and the Hanford plant. I was a just-okay student, so I spent a lot of time looking out the window. And watching an occasional tumbleweed come rambling across the field. They always seemed a little like stray animals out there, moving past in that way they did--faster than a walk, but slow enough that a 6th grade boy could usually run and catch one if he tried. (The big ones, anyway; the small ones, maybe not). But then much of the land got filled in with houses out there, and roads and sidewalks and a church and another school, and I remember telling somebody at our 50 year reunion that you didn't see many tumbleweeds around anymore. Until last night, that is. And today they're even talking about us in Houston. http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Da/200103_Tumblewees.jpg TDK '65' -Terry DAVIS Knox ('65) Sent from my Samsung SmartPhone ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Pam EHINGER (Blue Ribbon Class of '67) Re: Hanford Bus Lot I don't remember a bus lot on Stevens. Re: Tumbleweeds Our snowy, wet spring loosened and uprooted tumbleweeds (Russian thistles) that piled up and blocked Highway 240 for 10 hours on New Year's Eve. Wind gusted up to 50 mph. Those tumbleweeds, stopped by wire fences, buried four cars! Then I remembered a collection of tumbleweeds I helped spray pink to set the scene for "November Magic," a dance at Col-Hi (now Richland High School again). That was the only time I recall "Russian thistles" playing nice. My family lived on the 400 block of Thayer Drive. I recall, as a youngster, getting off a city bus at the wrong corner (flat- roofed prefabs looked alike in a sandstorm) and having my bare legs whipped by sand as I leaned into the wind. I found out the next day that the Watts' prefab roof had blown off! Our little part of the planet offers its own dramas. Re: aaccidentsz 'n' such I learned recently that both Rex HUNT ('53wb) and his wife are battling cancer, and I pray for success in extending their lives. Rex's story about receiving unnecessary free boxes of food was an eye-opener. Nursing care right now could be more useful than boxes of food. Accidents, like our dear Maren's tumble downstairs, also cause problems. Thirty years ago my friend was framing the second floor of his new garage. He stepped on a piece of wood that shifted, and he landed astraddle a 2 x 10. His wife found him on the couch. For three months after his ER visit, he carried a bag strapped to his leg and a tube punched through stomach into bladder. Finally his crushed urethra was reconstructed. He summarized, "Great way to improve your tolerance for pain." It wasn't painful to send my annual $24 to Maren's, Inc.! Dad was in Hanford Patrol and rode the bus to work so Mom would have a car with four kids at home. Dad was in uniform of course, complete with his weapon. The bus dropped him at the corner of Birch and Sacramento. As soon as I heard the bus, I ran into the back bedroom and shut the door. I stayed there until I heard the living room closet door shut which let me know that Dad had taken his gun off and put it on the top shelf of the closet. Then I would come out and give him a big hug. I hated guns then and still do! Re: The new year I want to wish our Bomber family a happy and blessed 2020. I had told you how my dad used to teach me to drive in the bus lot. He even let me drive a friend's mom and two of their kids to Montana to pick up their dad when I was 15. My dad was one in a million (to me anyway). He was a Battalion Chief for the Fire Department at Hanford. You all probably don't remember or didn't know, but my dad (and mom) had worked at Hanford for many years. I graduated in 1962 and my dad suffered a fatal heart attack in August, 1964 after bowling with his cronies at the newer bowling alley one night. I'm told he died instantly. Our family was devastated. I was living in Seattle at the time and I told my mom I would move back home. She was in such a state of shock I don't think she realized what I had proposed. I put in my application with G.E. and was told it could be up to six months before I got an answer. After two or three months my mom convinced me to move back to Seattle and go on with my life. I did as she said and moved back, married in 1966 and moved to Livermore, CA. where my (1st) husband had been transferred. I had my daughter in 1968 and stayed home with her until I applied for work at Lawrence Radiation Laboratory. I knew nothing about it other than it was walking distance from my house. I had been told it would take three months or more to get a security clearance so was real surprised when they called me fairly soon and said I had a security clearance that had been issued in early 1965. Turns out Richland had hired me but I had already moved away. I don't recall being notified in any way that I had gotten a job in Richland. Anyway I ended up working 27 years at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory when I retired as a Principal Resource Analyst). Some of you may know that LLNL was was run by the University of California with funding from AEC, then ERDA, and finally DOE. My badge read 6060XX HA, where most every other employee had a CA at the end of their employee number. I always considered myself very fortunate to work at a similar facility as Hanford and still feel that my dad would have been really proud that I worked there and what a coincident that it was for a very similar purpose. I retired the end of 1999 and moved to Oregon with my second husband whom I married in 1977. -Shirley SHERWOOD Milani ('62) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Tom HEMPHILL ('62) Re: Tumbleweeds I'm pretty sure that everyone that grew up in Richland has great stories about tumbleweeds. Well, I recall a trip to Portland in 1965 between Christmas and New Years. It was cold and windy, what a surprise. Diane BROWN ('64) and I made the trip and encountered a "ton" of tumbleweeds, so we started singing the western song "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" and the more beer we drank the better we got. By the time we got past The Dalles we were world class singers. Then we had to pull off the highway to discharge some filtered beer and got stuck in the snow. My old '50 Plymouth (we called it the beater) was not really an off-road vehicle and the tires were pathetic at best. But, tired and cold and not too sober, we made it to Portland anyway. It only took eight hours. What an adventure and fond memories. I still like that song. -Tommy HEMPHILL ('62) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Pam EHINGER (Blue Ribbon Class of '67) Re: Bus Lot Ok I found out from my Dad, Max Ehinger, that the Hanford Bus Lot went from Thayer to Stevens! I remember November 1st, 1977, my 2nd day, wandering around trying to find the bus going to 222-S. I ask the only person I know, in the crowd of people going to their busses, Dennis McCain which one to take. Good thing he was on the same bus because I still had no idea of where to get off. After the 25 minute ride and getting our badges checked by Patrol prior to going through the 200 West main gate, then traveling less than two miles Dennis pointed to the building and said there it is. He worked as a shift manager in 234-5 and his stop was a couple more after mine. The next day I was to report to PUREX and begin my 6 weeks of training as a Chemical Technologist, but that's not the interesting part of this story. 3 weeks later heading home on the PUREX bus we're pulling into the bus lane, after coming to a stop no one is getting off. Curious until I looked out the window to the parking lot (the bus lane was next to the lot) and I see all these police cars and a man with a hunting rifle on the hood of his car! The original bus lot was right behind Chief Joe middle school. Busses had routes, Cottonwood, Thayer, Wright, Comstock and a few others. I don't know if there were express shuttles or not back then but each lane had a designation as to which area it was going to. 100 Areas were singular it was either B, D or F in the beginning. 200 Areas had a bit more variety, B Plant, T Plant 273, 272, 241 maybe one or two more destinations in each 200 Area. The 200 North buildings probably had bus service too. There was also 300 Area buses and one out to minor construction in the old Hanford Camp. Bus service was a split shift affair out to the areas while busses still ran around town (that's old news to many Bombers). Sometime in the early '50s when the A E C decided the original lot had become into such a rat trap (temporary construction you know) a new facility was built further out of town. See attached photos. Before I went to work at the button plant, spring of 1954, I worked for the Bureau of Reclamation out of Kennewick. During the winter of '53, tromping thru the hills between Kennewick and McNary dam the little valleys between every two hill would fill with Tumble weeds and the snow sat on top and made it impassable. did not take me long to figure out how to set a fire in the brush at the base of the valley and with the snow acting as a chimney it would draw the flames very rapidly up the draw and the snow would then be laying on the ground as the fire would race too fast to melt much. But at least we could then walk up the draw doing our survey thing... wound up scorching a coyote butt several times as they would burrow in these draws as the snow covered tumble weed created a great protected place. It hasn't been as bad as a couple of years ago but I have one corner on my property that is a pretty good collection spot. I have two big garbage bags ready to go right now. It is amazing how tumbleweeds can be stomped down and how many you can get in a big garbage bag. The real big ones I take to the park at Badger Mountain for the city to deal with. Concerning both, a recollection and a proposed story line. First, I recall a surreal image out the dining room window (also at the west end of town) from 1955 or so. An abrupt desert blast blanked out Badger Mountain before darkening the mid-afternoon sun. Even nearby houses ("A" and "B" and pre- cuts) were obscured by the dust of an airborne desert, now looking like brown cardboard cutouts. Vertical Lombardy poplars across the field were pinned down nearly ninety degrees in a horizontal direction, dancing up and down weirdly without breaking off... Then, west to east, airborne a few feet above Benham Street, a garbage can went sailing by and held my eye. A full block farther east, one corner of the can finally touched down to the road only to be kicked back up several feet above the pavement. The projectile disappeared out of sight without hitting any parked cars and without hitting the ground again. So, to Michael WAGGONER ('60), perhaps the movie plot shows the prairie fire wiping out Richland (like a nuclear blast?), to be finally stopped only at the River's edge? (In the sound track the melody and lyrics of Woodie Guthrie's "Roll on Columbia" [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2sH6CcsTafw]). And across the River, beautiful and orphaned Pasco then rises up, uncontested, to become the alabaster city on a hill that political utopians sometimes write about. Even grander than Kennewick! And, to Peter TURPING ('70), your compacted and garbage-bagged tumbleweeds become a national ecological symbol, because-just as clearing-out and controlled forest burns reduce catastrophic forest fires as at Yellowstone a few decades back-such clearings-out of tumbleweed snags on the prairie prevent range fires. But then, maybe a few class-action attorneys get in the game, and your bags are ruled illegal and removed from store shelves (not biodegradable!). So, back to WAGGONER's ('60) range fire scenario... -Pete BEAULIEU ('62) ******************************************* ******************************************* That's it for today. Last week we had gusts of 50 mph for a very long time. Since then I don't think we topped 40 mph but it's still pretty bad. It's nearly impossible to hold open the front door or car door. And it's difficult to get a good night's sleep. Several times in years past, our house lost shingles and roofing pretty bad. A glass and metal table blew over on the deck and scattered broken glass all over. Strange items blew from the neighbors' houses and yards to ours. Last week a porta-potty blew over that the landscapers were using in our yard. UCK! And, of course, it always blows the night before early morning garbage pick-up, so you have to secure the can and wait a week to put it out. One day we even went out the 300 area along the fence line along the river and gathered all the weeds that had collected on the fence. As a one-time architecture student, let me begin by quoting a former and less-than-eloquent national president, with this: "Let me say this about that... " I say one time, the only building I ever worked on was a duck blind in the Yakima River flood plain with Steph's brother, Jeff DAWSON ('62). Many paths were disrupted in the late '60s. As for Jefferson School, while the final exterior color livens things a bit, the multistory and small-window design reminds me a bit of a WallaWalla-type prison blockhouse. The only thing lacking is a high border fence topped with razor wire. And, the identical design shows up, cookie-cutter style, at the new Lewis & Clark Elementary School as well (where I actually matriculated K-6, before moving north in 1956), and maybe elsewhere in the blueprint-layout of boomtown Richland. Every over-designed neighborhood centered on a grade school, and all the grade schools originally centered predictably on a single high school. (Not to mention the monotony of alphabet houses, all originally in bland pastels, the only wartime colors available.) But our town grew size-wise and even personality-wise, and just as the Downtown was matched by an Uptown in 1949 (Dawson- Richards: the "first store to open its door!"), so too, at the north end there's been for decades the accomplished and rightfully-proud Hanford High School-with an earlier and better design than the now-replicated elementary school version, but a design for which I have a modest observation... Built as a K-12 in 1972, and then transitioned into a high school in the mid-'80s, the physical ground plan could have been tweaked just a bit to arrive at a missed balance and harmony between the same classroom wings-and a set of interlocked, more generous and semi-enclosed exterior courtyards. A Yin and Yang sort of thing creating a greater overall composition and sense of place. Wings and courtyards, both--such was my two-quarter project proposal in 1967-'68 as a fifth-year student for an anticipated new high school in Richland. This was my final year at the University of Washington College of Architecture and Urban Planning. Otherwise, mine was not a great design, much too conventional, but it was salvaged by this overall concept. My selected site with athletic fields was also different, and less foresighted, taking up most of the tract bounded by George Washington Way and Jadwin, and south from McMurray.) The gym, of course, was colossally out of scale, a near replica of the double-deck Col-High gym with its multiple courts and a flexible seating option for 6,000. (My "jury" defense for this feature took some fancy talking.) Back now to Jefferson Elementary. As a sign of the times, and as a defense for the design we see today, we might suspect that the multistory approach is dictated by cost and a priority for student security. The number of public entrances is minimized, and there might even be a fire door to seal off the upper floors during possible lock-down. So, while the outside form is off-putting, in my opinion, it might be that the interior design is a prize winner. Haven't been inside, and as un-escorted outsiders I/we might never even get a hall pass (which places all of us in very good company--along with any mention of God). -Pete BEAULIEU ('62) ~ Shoreline, WA immediately north of the Soviet of Seattle. ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Dwight CAREY ('68) Re: Tumbleweeds I don't know if anyone has suggested solutions to our Tumbleweed problem, But I have one ........ You'd have to do the research, I don't recall who, where, or when. I have another idea for their use, however, and it may help the anti-dam crowd who want to free the Snake and Columbia Rivers from their bondage. The idea came to me when recalling camping trips along the Yakima with our scout troop in the early '50s. On one occasion we camped at the old prisoner-of-war site between Richland and Benton City. None of the buildings remained; however, there were a number of the concrete lined basements still in existence. Every one of the chock full of tumble weeds. Well, on one occasion we endured a weekend when it was cold and, tiring of the usual sports - like putting a raw egg in another's back pocket then slapping him on the fanny - one of the scouts decided to see how one of the basements would respond to a wooden match. Wow! The heat and light generated was a sight to behold. I think "Torch" disappeared and hid by the river until things died down, including the fly-over by a Civil Air Patrol plane. Anyway, I think given the inexhaustible supply of fuel and existing furnace facilities, an enterprising society could satisfy heat and/or electricity needs for a multi-state area. There. You said it was awarded by the "Republic of South Vietnam." Are you referring to the Yellow one with three red stripes or the one that is green and white stripes? The yellow one was issued by the US govt you had to be there something like six days, fired one round, or been shot at, or something like that. The the green and white one was from The Republic of South Vietnam and you had to be there six months. You might talk to a (service officer?) with the American Legion or the VFW. I saw a bus parked at Uptown one day that had something like American Legion and veterans benefits on it. I went in to talk about something else and I mentioned to him they had sent me a certificate saying I was awarded a Good Conduct Medal but they never sent the actual medal. He pulled down a form and sent it in and I got one. If you don't want to go through that go to Amazon.com and type in "Vietnam Service Medal" (yellow w/red stripes) and "Vietnam Campaign Metal" for the green and white. Be sure you order the full size one/s and not miniature and some look a little phony to me, I think they are a poor reproduction. If you are looking for the Vietnam Campaign medal you can't get that one through the government because it was not issued by the US govt. and the South Vietnam govt does not exist anymore. Some twenty years ago I had shingles that placed itself behind my right ear and traveled up the side of my head to the top. Fortunately it did not go into the eye, which can really be a BAD occurrence. I also was fortunate that although it was extremely painful, and I didn't get much sleep, it was gone two months later. When the newer vaccine for shingles came out a couple of years or so ago my doctor said that there was always the 50/50 chance that I COULD get shingles again - he strongly advised me to get the newer two-dose vaccine because although there also was a 50/50 chance you could get it again - even with the vaccine given - they were finding out that shingles would be worse without the vaccine. It is correct that it is a two-dose vaccine and, at that time two years ago, the medical insurance would not cover it and it was quite expensive although worth it. This might have changed. But it would be advisable to get more than one doctor's opinion if it would lessen a worse case scenario without it. I know we all have a story... a reason he was our friend and I would like to share a couple with you. There was a gathering of several Bombers at a funeral of a Bomber spouse, David being one of those present. We were all sitting around after the service on a beautiful deck in the northwest talking about our friends... and the name Ray STEIN ('64) came up. My daughter and son-in-law were there, and she innocently asked "Who is Ray Stein?". There was dead silence and threatening movement to throw her over the deck... that's when David swooped in and in a fatherly, lawyerly and instructive voice educated her about Ray. (Cut her some slack... she's a California kid and she has met Jim HOUSE ('63) who was at our home for a '63 Bomber birthday party). David loved all things Bomber and didn't mind "helping" others along. David attended several house parties either at Ellen WEIHERMILLER Anderson's ('63) home or at mine. He was always given the worst bed... either in a freezing basement with Jiminy Cricket or on a horrible pull out sofa with dogs trying to invade... he never complained and was always the best and least grumpy houseguest! He even stayed awake with me to watch a Terence Knox movie about a giant lizard... while the sissies went to bed! He was part of an email group that discussed everything there is possible to discuss... from gossip to politics to deep philosophical issues... we have & will miss him as he always added something wonderful... or something irritating... but he was part of our "Five". http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Wat/171020-Group_of_Five.jpg He loved my Hoquiam Grizzly husband, he loved my daughters and son-in-law and he loved me. Are y'all ready? Somebody asked... if a dog is dropped, are they replaced with another dog? No... if a dog is dropped for whatever reason (injury, sickness, dog fight, dog in heat) the musher continues the race with the dogs he/she has left. For many years, they began the race with 16 dogs. Maybe last year or the year before, that changed to 14 maximum. The musher MUST have five (5) dogs IN HARNESS at the finish line in order to qualify has having completed the race. Re: Volunteers Making Dog Collar Tags http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Idit/170215_Dog_Tags.jpg Pictures from the 2012 race... I'm GUESSING they use a different color each year? Dogs are marked in two ways, by the microchip identification system and by collar tags. Upon establishing the starting position of each musher (happens Thursday Night before the race), they are given a packet of items at the pre-race banquet that includes their handlers' armbands, truck passes to get into the chute area and the all-important dog tags. Each tag has the bib number of the musher and a letter of the alphabet. The musher puts the tags on the dogs prior to the start in Anchorage on Saturday. At the start, he/she will turn in a list showing the dog that corresponds with each tag number. For example: 'Chopper 20-D'. The returned dog coordination office at the Millennium Hotel has a copy of this list and if for any reason they cannot get a scan on a dog, they can use the tag. When a musher leaves a dog at a checkpoint, he/she fills out a form on that dog and the checker scans the dog for the microchip and checks the collar tag. This information is noted on the 'returned dog paperwork' which will remain with the dog as it is moved back to Anchorage. The dog collar and microchip is rechecked each time the dog is moved along his/her trip to Anchorage. Once in Anchorage, the information is checked by the crew that will transport the dogs to the Eagle River Correctional Institute where a group of inmates care for them until the mushers' handlers arrive to take them home. I saw a news report that after 7 years of mild winters, AK is experiencing really cold temps. Have you picked this up & discussions of how this might effect the race to return to "normal" below zero temps along much of the route? [To answer your question: No, I hadn't heard that. You can go to Iditarod.com... and click on "Race Center" and in a sub menu there you will see "Iditarod Weather Center"... Barbara died on January 26, 2020. Mom was born in Old Hickory, Tennessee and gave birth to four children, Lynne Bossert Kelley, Robin Bossert Yamin (RIP), Randy Bossert, and Wendy Bossert Golick. She is survived by Lynne, Randy, and Wendy, and four grandchildren, Ryan Kelley, Ashlyn Kelley, Kian Yamin, and Natalie Golick. Robin died at the age of 37 from cancer. Many of you know that Mom struggled with cancer beginning in the 1960s. Her first diagnoses of cancer was long before we understood that toxic exposures in our environment would be a possible link to why, at such a young age, Mom suffered with this illness. Again in 1981, she heard those words "You have cancer". But even then, and as challenging as this diagnosis was for Mom, she never stopped fighting her disease. Rather than take her doctors words to heart regarding her prognosis, she chose instead to focus on living. She looked forward to a long and bright future, one in which she would enjoy many, many more years with some of you, and of course, her beloved family. In the 1990s, once again, Mom had to hear those words, "You have cancer". As luck would have it for her, this diagnosis was made due to an injury from Boogie Boarding in Hawaii. An early diagnosis this time was helpful in beating the odds. She went on to thrive in spite of her illness. By 2010, after owning 2 small businesses, seeing her grandchildren be born and enjoying the things Grandmas love about having grandchildren, once again those words were spoken from a doctor, "You have cancer". Even then, and as challenging as this diagnosis would prove to be, her immediate response was, "It's ok, I've got this". And, despite the prognosis from her doctors all along the way, she proved them all wrong. When Mom died, she did not die from her cancer, she died of antibiotic induced kidney failure. Mom loved reading the Sandstorm and keeping informed about her friends. She still enjoyed going to lunch every day and ending at Starbuck's with a small coffee, heavy cream, and a cookie. Up until a few years ago, Mom was walking with Buster Brown, her chocolate lab, about 5 miles per day. As this became more challenging, she bought a recumbent bicycle and rode often. Mom recently moved into a new house that was built to accommodate her changing needs. Every morning, her lovely chocolate Labrador and her golden retriever would run into her new bedroom and greet her, stealing a Walker's shortbread cookie from her night table. She was able to look out her window and celebrate the joy of nature in her new landscape with Sutter's Jay birds enjoying their breakfast from her bird feeder. She was savvy with her iPhone, iPad, and MacBook. She loved to look up things of interest using her web browser, she often "face-time" spoke with Lynne and Wendy, and let's be clear that shopping on-line was appreciated. Every evening, she enjoyed Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. Often, we took her with us to a movie theater and out for dinner. She truly just loved being active and "doing things". The Oregon Coast was an additional pleasure she celebrated as often as possible. An occasional stop at a Casino made her happy. The one armed bandit was often her friend, or so she said. Mom loved to travel. She was able to enjoy many travels to fun places. It's not clear if she had a favorite spot but, her instructions were for her surviving children to take her remains to Hawaii and scatter her in the sea where she would know that she will never be cold. Mom disliked cold weather. She loved the bright sunny days of her youth in the Tri-Cities but probably would have been happier without so much wind and sand. We are devastated to loose her now. But, we are thankful that we had such a loving and wonderful Mom for so many years despite the odds. For me personally, she gave me so many gifts, some of which are easy to not recognize because they just become a part of who I became. One of my most treasured gifts from Mom is the gift of swimming. Mom ensured that each of her children learned to swim and for me that included several years on the Kennewick Swim Team. At 59 years old now, I still workout almost daily in a pool. Thank you Mom for affording me this opportunity to have a life long love of the water. Your sacrifices to your family are noted and appreciated. In loving memory of my Mom and my friend. http://alumnisandstorm.com/Obits/pics20/RIP55CrowderBarbara19.jpg -Randy Bossert ******************************************* ******************************************* That's it for the month.
