Re: Maren's question to us
Well, dear Maren, a few Sandstorms ago you asked us all "it's
that time people---are you ready for Iditarod news?" Well,
this past few weeks we have all been grieving, in our own way,
over the shock of losing one of our favorite Bombers David
RIVERS ('65-RIP), We have been buried, for more than two
weeks, under hours of political _ _ _ _ (fill in your own
word) and now grieving for the tragic loss of Kobe Bryant,
his daughter, and the other seven beautiful lives in the
helicopter crash plus now they say we have a super virus
already spreading in the U.S.A., from China, that's gonna get
us!!! We've had seven inches of rain in January here in
Portland and it is the wettest January in seven years with
many mud slides closing busy roads here and there!! All I can
say Maren, at this point is "MUSH!!!!!!!!!" Thanks for your
dedication!!!

Re: Richland Varsity Basketball
Bombers hosted the Kennewick Lions Friday, January 31. The
Bomber girls lost 77-53, and the Bomber boys lost 77-63.
The teams traveled to Hermiston Saturday, February 1, where
the Richland boys beat Hermiston 74-53. Bomber girls lost a
close game 38-34. They were ahead until the last few minutes
of the game when two Bomber girls fouled out, and our coach
was ejected from the game. The refs must have had a "bad"
night. The boys are 11-8 overall and 8-7 in district, and the
girls are 8-11 overall and 7-8 in district.
One game remains in league play. On Tuesday, February 4, the
teams will host Pasco.

It's been a long time since the old show originally
aired, but I just found out yesterday that they're bringing
Tour of Duty back on Saturday nights on Heroes & Icons TV,
along with a bunch of other classic war series from back in
the day.
So it's somehow fitting that by dusting off our show
and putting it out there again, H&I TV will contribute towards
getting a real veteran, Marine Sgt. David RIVERS, his memorial
bench along the Riverwalk he loved.

Re: the Riverwalk
Terry DAVIS Knox ('65) mentions the Riverwalk with its
memorial benches, and a soon-to-be new bench for Marine Sgt.
David RIVERS ('65-RIP). So, as an aside here's "the rest of
the story" about the genesis of the Riverwalk.
In the summer of 1965 (!), I found myself with a non-descript
summer job in an office of five, housed in the Old Fire
Station (along with the Girl Scout Office and the office of
the fledgling Port of Benton). The summer job was with the
Ben-Franklin (counties) Regional Planning Commission. Our
names were all unconventional, as noted by the two or three
visitors during the entire summer: BEAULIEU, Gary TABASINSKI
(the second intern, also '62), a slightly older guy Tom
Pickerell (later planning director for Kittitas County,
Ellensburg), the director, a horticulturist and laid-back
pipe-smoker, George Plescher, and the long-suffering
receptionist/secretary, Fran Postma. The original High Five.
Now, "Tabs" and I, both clueless architecture students (WSU and
UW, respectively), were tasked to create ex nihilo a Regional
Parks and Recreation Plan, under new state legislation. Some
state funding would follow. No guidelines. The short story is
we burned a lot of gas doing windshield surveys of parks and
school grounds (we could tell you how many swing sets were to
be found in Prosser, etc.), and then fooled around with some
arithmetic, two typewriters, and a table-top sized map.
Late in the game, and just before quitting time, came the
unconventional idea of grabbing a Pentel Pen and magnifying
the existing Columbia Park many miles upstream. Why not a
splash a green ink all the way from the Pasco-Kennewick Bridge
through the existing park and then clear up the Columbia River
through Richland and nearly up to the 300 Area barricade?
A line in the sand! Dress it up a "Regional Linear Park,"
maybe even with a pedestrian "Promenade!" The first such plan
in the state. Seized upon by others as a model after being
most formally adopted by the Commission pursuant to Robert's
Rules of Order. Presto, the Riverwalk. Invented with a stroke
of a pen and-in the interests of full disclosure-as an
afterthought.
Eventually the saber-rattling U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
(with a Flood Control mindset and pre-emptive authority) saw
the wisdom of it all, and in later years other important folks
even contracted for "the long green line" of trail pavement.
Even in the Atomic City, the pen is mightier than the sword...

Your post mentioned unconventional names. Quite a coincidence,
local Tri-Cities news last night on KNDU Ch 25 showed a
website "How Many of Me" where you can type in your first and
last name and it will show you how many in the U.S. have the
same name as you. There are 56 Dennis Hammers. I have known
for a long time there was another living across the river

Hiya,
Thanks for all your inquiries about how to contribute
to David's bench and plaque.
We're on it.
So here's the deal:
Cecelia BENNETT McCartney has contacted the city. The
benches currently in place are all taken, but the city begins
the installation of the planned new benches sometime in May.
In order to purchase a bench for May, we must fill out the
application and pay the $2,500 fee before April 1st.
Otherwise we go on the list for next year.
However it works out is fine. Either way, we'll get it
done. Only contribute if you want to. The city gave us their
deadline, and I'm just passing it along to you.
Bench donations to:
Cecilia McCartney
Email Maren and she will give you Cecilia's snail mail address.
The Cool Desert Nights https://cooldesertnightstc.com/
party at Cecelia's house Friday afternoon, 6/26/20 in
honor of David begins at 4pm. Everyone is welcome. Please come
on over and say hi. Very informal. A couple people might want
to say a few words on David's behalf, but just gathering will
be enough.

Re: Bill HIGHTOWER ('49-RIP)
I was saddened to read Bill's death a few days ago. I first
met him then summer of '48, when I joined the Richland CAP
cadet squadron. Bill and Willis "Red" WEICHEL ('49-RIP) were
mentors - and lifelong friends. Bill enlisted in the Air Force
right after high school, served in Korea, then returned to
Richland and worked at Hanford. He married Jane ROLLINSON
('52-RIP) (my classmate and fellow CAP cadet). They eventually
relocated to the San Diego area, and in the '70s their
marriage came apart. In 1978 I was in command of a Coast Guard
ship training with Navy in San Diego, and took Bill out on my
ship during a combat training exercise.
Bill moved on to Austin, TX for some years and was in business
for himself there, as I remember. Richland apparently had a
"draw" for him, and he purchased a condo here and renewed a
relationship with Shannon CRAIG ('50) - also a CAP cadet "back
in the day". He and Shannon married some years back. I saw
them a time or two a year or so ago - and meant to see them
more often. The road to hell is paved with unkept good
intentions.
Bill was a person of importance to me in my "Bomber" days.

Re: Names
http://howmanyofme.com/search/
Thanks for your entry about finding people who share your
name!
First a little back story. In 2016 my siblings (David ('61),
Gerald ('65), Judy ('71)) and I, with spouses, drove to
Dickinson, ND to see my parents' homesteads. My mother grew up
south of Dickinson and my father's homestead was north of
Dickinson. The clerk at the motel where we stayed said their
was another "Stein" who had checked in. We met him the next
morning and his name was Gerald Stein and he was from
Richardton, ND. When I said my name was Ray Stein, he said
that a "Volga German" named Ray Stein had settled in
Richardton back in the late 1800s and named his first son Ray.
After that, each first son born to a Ray Stein was also named
Ray Stein. Since Richardton has a population that varies
between 500-600 (and at least 50 of the population are monks
who live at Assumption Abbey), I always wanted to check out
his story. With your app, sure enough, I found a Ray Stein in
Richardton, ND (no relation to me).
By the way, if like me, you want to know what is a "Volga
German", you should read "Hardship to Homeland" co-authored by
Richard Scheuerman who was and may still be the Director of
the Franklin County (WA) Museum.

Re: Bench for David
Hiya,
Thanks for all your inquiries about how to contribute
to David's bench and plaque.

Email Maren and she will give you Cecilia's snail mail address.
The Cool Desert Nights https://cooldesertnightstc.com/
party at Cecelia's house Friday afternoon, 6/26/20 in
honor of David begins at 4pm. Everyone is welcome. Please come
on over and say hi. Very informal. A couple people might want
to say a few words on David's behalf, but just gathering will
be enough.
If you want to watch the parade from her sidewalk, bring
a chair.

I found it to be very interesting about your Volga German
heritage. It does seem as though life gets in the way when it
comes to finding out our ancestors until it's too late to get
the information from our folks and others. You probably do,
but I'll ask you anyway. Do you use Ancestry at all and also
Find-a-Grave site? I think some countries are a lot harder to
find information than others. I feel very lucky that all the
information I needed on both sides of my parents was in
England. Not to say that I had it easy to find the way-back-
when times. Frank's side of the family was a real challenge to
say the least. His early ancestors were from Germany. I did
his DNA and it opened up several cousins, one of whom is
a 3rd cousin. He had information going back to at least 2
generations of ancestors in Germany. It's getting harder to go
back further as some parents are unknown. In those cases, you
hit a wall. Good luck going forward in your search. I find
it's a never ending passion.

"60 more people have been removed from the ship

get passengers the medicine they need then we
must get them off the ship.
Please call your congressman and demand action.
This situation is rapidly deteriorating and not
improving in the slightest.
No fancy article posting today as there's no new
real news on the situation. Currently medications
have still not been provided and this is of great
concern. Without my father's heart medicine
nothing good is going to occur. Despite numerous
calls to the state department, the U.S. Embassy in
Tokyo, and Princess Cruise line no one can give
updates on the status of the medicine. This is
again very alarming as the request for the
medicine was put in five days ago. In this day
and age for the Japanese government to not be
able to provide U.S. citizens with necessary
medication on a boat that they quarantined is
absolutely intolerable. The fact that our
government continues to allow this to occur is
even more intolerable.
Hopefully there will be movement as I have been
assured that my father has been moved to the top
of the list for medication."

What a great idea that everyone whom David wished happy
birthday send $25. As I was writing the check I thought to
myself that it probably ought to be about $500 for as many
times that David said happy birthday. The last time I heard
from David was December 22. Jim HAMILTON ('63) had sent him a
picture of the Christmas party and he'd received my Christmas
card and newsletter. As many do, caught up in the holidays,
sick cat, trying to get out of Seattle for Northern Idaho, I
thought that when I got to Idaho and had a bit of time I'd get
a letter or note off to David. I didn't and am sick that I
didn't before I got the news of his passing. A lesson we all
know too well to never forget to tell someone how much they
mean to you as someday "when you have a bit of time" it might

I'm not sure I would want to bet my life on the accuracy of
the "how many of me" website. I, too, tried the site and
learned - according to their data - that there are 331,081
people in the U.S. with the first name Dale, but 1 or fewer
named Dale Ennor. I know for a fact there is another "Dale
Ennor" living in Iowa as well as a third on the Chatham
Islands [NOT U.S.] 500 miles east of main New Zealand islands.
He, in Iowa, is a single 65 year old male; "she" in New
Zealand is a 53 year old female. Other than "Dale Evans," I
only know of one other female with the first name "Dale" and
she is/was a Bomber from the class of 1960-Dale Johnston.
Oddly, the site indicates there are 3,331,081 people In the
U.S. With 331,081 named "Dale" this represents exactly one
percent of the population. Has anyone notice this same
percentage with their name?

There are 39 Phyllis Coates in the U.S. Two of us live here. I
have never met her but I was aware of her existence.
Several years ago I asked Ted to pick up Cinnabons on
Christmas Eve day at The Mall since he was at a movie near by.
Now, Ted would rather "eat glass" that go in to the mall on
such a busy day, but he knew it would really help me out.
After waiting in a long line he finally made it to the counter
where he was informed that "Phyllis Coates" had already picked
up the order. He told the gal I would never send him to the
mall for something and then go ahead and pick it up. "She did
sir, I waited on her myself. She was wearing a red sweater."
Well this Phyllis does wear red at Christmas time but Ted was
having none of it. He demanded she go look again, and sure
enough there was the other order for a Phyllis Coates.

To: The Class of '60
We have begun planning for our 60 year Class Reunion. It will
be held in conjunction with the Club 40 reunion events on
Friday and Saturday, September 11 and 12, 2020. In addition to
having our own table or tables at the Club 40 events, the
Class of '60 will have a separate gathering on Saturday
afternoon. Please look for upcoming announcements and
information.
We plan to send emails to everyone for whom we have a valid
email address. Alternately, if we only have a US Post Office
address for you, we will send you a post card. If you have
changed your email or postal address since our great 50 year
reunion 10 years ago, please let one of us or someone know how
we can contact you now. And if you know of anyone else who has
changed contact information, please either pass this message
on to them or send us the latest contact information!
If you live in or near the Tri-Cities, we would love to see
you at a planning meeting. Our next one is on Tuesday, March
10.
It will be great to see every one of the 300+ of you at the
reunion!
Thanks,

Worth a re-post -- just in case you hadn't already watched
this, it's one scary ride on the back of a sled. Try to
remember that IF he/she lets go of the handle bar the dogs
will keep going... they won't stop till they get tangled up or
another musher happens to catch them... like the year Lance
Mackey came upon an entire team -- sled and 11 dogs - but
Musher Scott Janssen was nowhere to be seen. Lance hooked
Scott's team to his snow hook... told the lead dog, "Cutie
Pie" to go and she wouldn't move... Lance went up the line
petted each of Scott's dogs and told them "Let's go find
Dad!" and then they moved and led both teams into the Koyuk
checkpoint... where they found Scott. Lance was worried that
the musher was dead and was glad to see he wasn't...

Today, February 16, 2020, 1pm (Las Vegas, NV time - that's

beloved and admired by the many who knew him personally and
by the many who never had the good fortune to have met him

to end a sentence with more than two exclamation marks that

Dear Sandstorm,
My dad, Dave LeCount, class of 1956, passed away 2/12/19 from
COPD. Sorry for the delay in notifying you.
Thank you,
Re: Dave's obit
David Allen LeCount, '56, passed away in Pleasant Hill,
California on February 12, 2019 at the age of 80 from chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease. He was born March 16, 1938 in
Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Dave worked as a procurement manager for Kaiser Engineers for
over 40 years, at projects in Pennsylvania, New Zealand and
Michigan, ultimately moving to Kaiser's home office in Oakland
in 1974.
Dave enjoyed hunting, fishing, water skiing, snow skiing,
snowmobiling, and stock car racing, driving a Capri in New
Zealand as The Flying Yank. He was a good dancer, with a great
sense of humor, tending towards the wry and dry, and widely
considered to be a cool guy, sometimes compared to Tom Selleck
and Clint Eastwood. Dave was cool as a cucumber, even in a
crisis, and his opinion was often one of the first sought and
most valuable. We will miss his kindness, generosity, wit, and
guidance.
Dave will be greatly missed by his loving and heartbroken wife
of 33 years, Fran Bannan LeCount; daughter, Jana LeCount Lowe
and her husband Michael; son, David LeCount; stepson, Travis
Williams and his wife, Carol; grandchildren Allison Lowe,
Lance Williams and Sabrina Williams; sister, Kathy LeCount
Sciamanda ('62) and her husband Eric; sister-in-law, Sandy
LeCount, widow of his brother Bob LeCOUNT ('54-RIP); sister-
in-law Bonnie Allen ('59); brother-in-law Mac Lamb; 9 nieces
and nephews and their children.
He is preceded in death by his father, Robert James LeCount;
mother, Genevieve Issacs LeCount; brother, Robert Jerome
LeCount ('54-RIP); and former wife, Marlene Allen LeCount
(56-RIP).
May he rest in peace.

Re: Donald Stratton one of last USS Arizona survivors, dies
Donald Stratton was one of six men trapped on a platform on a
mast with flames around them. They were saved when unknown
sailor on a ship tied up alongside the Arizona threw them a
line. I have seen this type of thing done before. Normally
when two ships have what is called an underway replenishment
shot lines are used. It is a small light weight braided line
attached to what looks like a rod with a bulb on the end fired
from what looks like a small shotgun. Once I did see a
boatswain's mate do it by hand. He used a line with round knot
(I think they usually have a steel ball inside them) called a
monkey's fist. He stood there swinging it round and round
vertically, then let loose and it flew way up in the air and
come down about 100 feet away on the deck of a destroyer
between the superstructure and the side of the ship. I was
impressed!!!
Back to Pearl Harbor. After a few tries the line landed on
that platform and the sailors tied it off and the six sailors
had to hand over hand across to the other ship, being badly
burned while doing it. It was written about in a book about
Pearl Harbor as the "unknown sailor." It was recently learned
who that sailor was. This video briefly shows our own Gen.
James MATTIS ('68)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMgbFtHo18Y
The other last living sailor rescued from that platform by Joe
George was Lauren Bruner, who died Sept 2019. This video shows
Donald Stratton and Lauren Bruner discussing what happened.

Re: Mardi Gras Time
AND its that time again in New Orleans... people are cRaZy...
I havent done a parade in years. Used to... when I lived
here and my Stacey was a toddler... She takes her kids -- and
any/all of her kids friends -- to a parade. She rents an
apartment for a couple of weeks on (parade route) St. Charles
Avenue (in "uptown" -- not the French Quarter)... gives them
all somewhere to pee and they can have stuff refigerated if
needed... a place to sit down and relax... Currently the son
of Staceys BFF (Conner) and a friend of his are in town
for Mardi Gras from Anchorage. Hes thrilled with 75° plus
weather. The two of them are staying wth me.. So Stacey
dropped Conner off about 3pm to "hold a spot"... people will
come and throw down tarps on the ground of the St. Charles
median... depends how big your tarp is/how much space you
need/how many people might show up.. maybe two tarps wide?
there are usually people there at 6a the morning of a parade
to save "the best" spot... you check the paper (or go onlne)
to find out which krewe (pronounced crew) parade route goes
by your spot... theres a lot of down time... I think they
watched two parades last night. Its a big ol party. They
put up a "tarp tent canopy" and bring lawn chairs and coolers
of beer and soda and whatever somebody wants... FOOD! Lordie
they bring FOOD! They bring the laddars for the little ones...
thats an oridnary ladder that they have added a seat at the
top... sits (attached securily) on the top step of the
laddar... like a carnival ride with a bar aoross the front
(ferris wheel comes to mind) the seat will hold three little
ones... and maybe two pre-teens... so the cute little darlings
up there and people on the floats can see them and they throw
more stuff to the kids... so the adults can hang out under
canopy cover and sit in lawn chairs and just hang...
BORING... then the parade comes... you jump up and down and
catch beads when each float goes by and then you can rest
between floats... Krewe og Bacchus has 31 animated super-
floats this year... there are as many as 75 truck floats --
depending on the parade... they roll alonng and throw stuff
out to the crowd... different stuff from each float.. NOT just
beads n cupie dolls... sometimes rubber footballs.. One parade
(Krewe of Zulu) throws golden coconuts... REAL coconuts
painted gold...
This is all for TWO night parades... Friday, Saturday, Sunday,
Monday and Tuesday there are parades ALL DAY LONG.
https://www.mardigrasneworleans.com/parades/ SCROLL, Baby!!
I could go on... enough for now...
Bomber cheers,

Re: More on USS Arizona BB-39
There are two survivors of the Arizona left. Kept finding
information that named one, or the other yesterday, but
finally think I got it right now. There are two survivors on
the Pearl Harbor attack on the Arizona still living, they are
Lou Conter and Howard "Ken" Potts, both 98. I remember
hearing in 1982 that one of the survivors had his ashes placed
in the Arizona, Lauren Bruner who died last September will
probably be the last interred on the Arizona making it a total
of 44. He said his family and friends graves are scattered
and noticed that after about five years no one comes to visit
them. With his ashes interred in the Arizona people will keep
coming and he will "be happy to see them." He will probably be
the last as Don Stratton who died last Saturday or Sunday said
he wants to be buried with his family in Nebraska. The other
two wish to be buried also.
They have a ceremony on the Arizona Memorial then hand the
urn to a diver who places it in the barbette of turret IV. A
barbette is the big round thing that the gun turret sits on.
The aft two gun turrets were removed and at least one hauled
up a mountain (called Battery Arazona) to be used for defense
in case the Japanese attacked Hawaii. I have seen a picture of
the three gun turret mounted on top of a mountain before the
internet was available and am surprised I can find almost
nothing on this project. Work on at least one of them (which
may have been mounted on a beach) was halted Aug 1945 with the
end of the war.
Before the Arizona Memorial was built I remember seeing
pictures of the flag being flown from a flagpole mounted on
the wreak of the Arizona I think in National Geographic. The
flag pole at the Memorial is welded onto the ships mast and
goes through a hole in the floor, so while it looks like it is
attached to the Memorial, it is actually part of the ship and
no part of the flagpole touches the Arizona Memorial. I knew
this and the first time I visited it (on a free ocean going
cruise provided to me courtesy of the United States Navy) it
was one of the first things I checked out.

We are really lucky to have such great storytellers among the

I want to commend Maren, who really doesn't have enough to do
already *LOL* for her writings about the Iditarod and other
items that she is interested in and knowledgeable about. And
today, in particular, I loved reading all about how her family
observes Mardi Gras.
George and I went to the final day of Mardi Gras one year in
the mid-'70s. He had business in Baton Rouge before and in
Pascagoula, Mississippi, after the final day of parades. We
stayed at a Holiday Inn on the outskirts of town and went down
to the French Quarter on Fat Tuesday, where we fought the
crowds and managed to eat and drink standing up and/or walking
up and down the streets. I have never been surrounded by so
many drunk people in my life!
[I used to do the French Quarter for Mardi
Gras... when I was much younger -- and probably
the last time I did (in the 1970s), I discovered
that (if you aren't VERY careful about where you
are) you can EASILY be totally surrounded by
people and you cannot go any way but the way that
crowd is moving. Even had my butt grabbed on that

No establishment would let anyone use their bathrooms, but I
cleverly flashed our room key from the other Holiday Inn at

Re: Kamiakin Country [you can order it on Amazon.com]
Well, I finally got around to ordering and reading KAMIAKIN
COUNTRY. Washington was a pretty scary place to live in the
frontier days. Bomber author Jo N. MILES ('64) really did
some exhaustive research. 370 (Indians and whites) were
killed between 1855 and 1858 in the Indian wars.
I noticed that one of the deceased was a Lt. Col. Joseph
Miles killed in 1855. Wonder if he was perchance related to
the author?
Chief Kamiakin was the most wanted leader and the most
pursued warrior all during the wars. It is amazing that
he was able to survive relatively unscathed.

In 2013/2014 we spent 15 months in New Orleans while my

original one had been destroyed by Hurricane Katrina). The
weather on Fat Tuesday was 38° and pouring rain. The parades

watched on TV since everything closes down in NOLA on Fat
Tuesday... it's a huge holiday and I was recovering from
recent rotator cuff surgery (performed by the New Orleans
Saints surgeon - I had the surgery after the Seahawks won
the NFC Championship game to go to the Superbowl but before
we beat the Broncos 43 - 8!). We were invited to a "family

Re: new submarine to be named USS Arizona
I'm again' it!!! Well maybe when the Arizona has rusted away
until there is nothing left of it. Considering some armored
parts of are 18 inches thick, even in salt water, it will be
awhile. This to me is very similar to the name of the USS
Constitution being taken away. In 1920 construction began a
new cruiser named the USS Constitution while the name of the
frigate "Old Ironsides" was officially changed to "Old
Constitution." With the Washington Naval Treaty or Naval
Limitations Treaty in February, 1922 that was supposed to
prevent an arms race, construction was stopped and "Old
Ironsides" got her name back.
I also have my doubts about naming an aircraft carrier after
Doris Miller. He was the black sailor aboard the USS West
Virginia who was serving food when the Pearl Harbor attack
started and manned a 50 cal machine gun which he had no
training for. I think more appropriate would be to name
another destroyer after him; one ship, the USS Miller FF1091,
launched in 1972, was named after him. Destroyers and
Destroyer Escorts (now called Fast Frigates or FF) are named
after Navy/Marine Corps heroes, so it seems appropriate to
name another one of these after him. Wikipedia has a good page
describing what he did during the Pearl Harbor attack -- a lot
more than what is shown in the movies.

Re: Elvis and the Arizona Memorial
In one of those radio programs after Elvis Presley died they
said Elvis' first concert after the Army raised the first
money to build the Arizona Memorial. I looked it up a few
months ago and that was not quite true. Fund raising had
stalled and Elvis gave a concert in Hawaii March 25, 1961
with 4,000 attending, all the proceeds going to the memorial
fund. It raised $54,000 and Elvis also made a contribution.
It was his second concert after getting out of the Army.
Publicity from this allowed the rest of the funding to be
raised quickly and the Arizona Memorial was dedicated on
Memorial Day May 30, 1962.

I would go along with not naming another Naval vessel
"Arizona". It would seem that what was once true no longer
holds in the naming of Navy ships. Although they still seem
to name tincans and DEs (FFs) after Navy and Marine heroes
including several admirals. Back in the day battleships were
named for the States; cruisers were named for state capitols
and aircraft carriers ("birdfarms") were named for former
ships of the line and revolutionary war battles. Somewhere in
the midst of WWII, civil war battles were added and later
Midway and Coral Sea (two early spats in WWII) snuck in. The
third carrier of this group was named for FDR, which sort of
started the precedent for naming carrier after famous people.
And with the demise of the battleship, missile submarines
(boomers) were getting named for states.
Now it would appear that "anything goes" and we don't even
need a glimpse of stocking.

Just watched a video of them checking in the food for ONE
musher... took about 4 minutes... each bag gets an address
label showing who gets the shipment at each checkpoint with
the weight of the bag on it then the bag is carried to the
appropriate pallet... there's a line of volunteers ready to
grab a bag and take it to the correct pallet.
Bags are shipped to a hub by commercial planes then by
Iditarod Air Force planes or snowmachines to the small
checkpoints.
Overweight (over 50 pounds) bags are repacked by volunteers.
Estimated 3000 to 3500 bags to all checkpoints for all
mushers.

Re: Check point recycling
Some checkpoints have landfills or it gets flown out with the
trash from several checkpoints. After the teams come through
and they drop their trash bags/drop bags at a determined area,
volunteers will go through them and sort out kibble, meat,
batteries and trash. This gets disposed in a proper manner.
The volunteers are very picky about leaving a clean

Maren, your mention of checkpoints and recycling made
me wonder (apologies if you have covered this and I've
forgotten): Do the dogs have potty stops or do they hold
it from checkpoint to checkpoint? Are there designated
places where they "go"? Seems like that could be a big
cleanup for the volunteers.
[Well now... I know I've seen dogs pee while
they're running in harness.. I also know that not
all mushers stay at a checkpoint... sometimes they
camp on the way into a checkpoint or after they
go thru the checkpoint... quieter for puppies/
musher to sleep/rest... different checkpoints have
different "creature comforts", too. Some checkpoints
have water boiling/waiting for mushers to use to
heat food and/or melt snow... they don't all do
that though. I'll have to ask about poop clean up
after departure. I know the volunteers rake up the
straw and sometimes locals use it for gardening,
but not all checkpoints even have residents let
alone residents who garden. -Maren]

Re: Ship names
It may be FDR himself who altered the naming pattern of
aircraft carriers. When asked by a reporter about the
Doolittle Raid where the B-25 bombers came from he said,
"they came from Shangri-La." The paradise valley hidden in
the Himalayas in the James Hilton book, Ronald Coleman movie
"Lost Horizon." They had actually come from the USS Hornet
CV-8, but because of this statement they named a new carrier
USS Shangri-La CV-38.
A lot of cruisers were named after state capitols, but not
all of them. Los Angeles, Bremerton, Oregon City, Baltimore,
Pittsburgh, Long Beach, Pasadena, Galveston, and Newport News
are a few non-capital cities that have had cruisers named
after them. The USS Olympia originally numbered C-6 is named
after a capitol city, has not been out of the water in
something like 60 years and is in very bad condition. It was
built in the late 1800s a veteran of the Spanish-American War
and the only naval ship in the world of that era still in
existence. They are now trying to raise $20 million to dry-
dock it and fix the "waterline deterioration of the hull." The
Russians had more cruisers than we did, even though they were
smaller than ours, so in 1975 we reclassified our destroyer
lead ships DGL as cruisers, so now we had cruisers named after
Naval/USMC heroes.
Re: Doolittle Trivia
Where did they get the B-25s to use in the Doolittle raid?
They got them from Pendleton, Oregon, saying they were going
to use them for anti-submarine patrol on the East Coast.
Re: Lost Horizon tid-bit
Bell Telephone made a series of science films that they showed
us in grade school and junior high. I really enjoyed watching
them and found at least some of them are on YouTube. I watched
the first one "Our Mr. Sun" yesterday which featured a young
Eddie Albert. He looked a lot younger than he did just nine
years later when "Green Acres" started to air on TV. In the
battle of Tarawa he skippered a landing craft in the first
wave and made several trips; while under fire is credited with
saving (a number of Marines which varies depending on your
source) who were stranded 500 yards offshore and under fire
for which he was awarded the Bronze Star with the "V" for
valor. In typical fashion of "the greatest generation" he
never talked about it until it was included in documentaries
in the '90s. I had known about that for years, but did not
know that before the war he had sailed a boat several times to
the Baja California Peninsula and even joined a circus as a
clown and did a trapeze act. It looked like he was just on
pleasure trips, but he was really working for the U. S.
government gathering information on Nazi and Japanese
activities in that area and took pictures of submarines. "The
history guy" has a video on YouTube about his spying and
combat experience.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZpJJYbf1ms
When I saw the picture of his wife, Margo, and it said she
was in "Lost Horizon" I wondered. I have only seen that movie
twice, the last time about 10 years ago, but I thought she
might be the one that was living in Shangri-La and wanted
Ronald Colman to leave the valley and take her with him.
That did not turn out too well. I was right, she was the one
although the movie was released in 1937 and they did not get
married until shortly after the war.

Re: the USS Arizona (and the USS Golet)
A tale here of random connections awash in an anonymous world...
Unknown to my family for decades was the exact plight of my
uncle, my father's youngest brother (Don), who disappeared in
the Pacific War in 1944. I recall at the age of five pondering
his stone over an empty grave. Family memory is that on
thinking about Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona, etc., he
deliberately chose submarines, reasoning that "if I have
to be working below the water line, I might as well be on a
submarine." He disappeared in a submarine.
As chance would have it, in 1982, when the office culture of
my job site in Seattle was unbearable, I looked into a
possible new track with a former classmate in the Architecture
program at the UW (1962-67). A random chat over burgers
ensued...
Turns out that his father was the random "Mac" McCann who had
been with the Navy during and after the war (COMSUBPAC:
Command of the Submarine fleet in the Pacific), and after the
war had worked with captured Japanese records, on a book
documenting the fates (dates, locations) of lost U.S.
submarines (Blair, Silent Victory).
With a mailing address now in hand, I soon received pages from
the later "Dictionary of American Fighting Ships" (1968/77) on
the last siting of Don's submarine, the USS Golet (SS 361) and
its crew of 82. The exact location of the oil slick, on May
28, 1944, place the boat immediately off the northwest corner
of Honshu Island, where it remains to this today.
As for the family story, the two-year old daughter, Patricia,
never met her father. My mother, a loyal letter writer,
never met the daughter or mother again, now clear across the
country, but wrote to them every year for sixty years. An
isolated Hanford nuclear facility with isolated Richland
"nuclear families" (!), many keeping alive the spark of
long-range family ties.
My overall impression is that boomtown Richland was a unique
lab-rat experiment, and that researchers missed the boat by
not conducting interviews and later oral histories. Are real
communities grown or only invented? The English Edmund Burke
had one view, and the French revolutionary Robespierre had
another until he, too, lost his head.

From the book "A Brief History of the Fjeld-Fields Family"
by Andrew Fjeld (my g-g-grandfather's last child by his 2nd
wife). What the book says about my namesake, Grandma Fields:
"...she became widely known throughout the commniity
for her blunt, plain-spoken, kindly expressions."
and "being in her ninety-third year a the time of
her death ... her mental and bodily vigor continued
to the last. Except for her hearing which became
quite difficult, she was exceptionally well
preserved to the end of her days."
That's my goal!!! Live to be 93..
My g-g-grandmother came to America in 1860 (during the time
of Custer and the Little Big Horn).
4/24/1860
In Norway, her 4th child died August 10th; 5th child died
August 24th; September 6th her 6th child was born. They left
Norway with 4 children when the baby was 7 months old.
The family traveled by ship to New York harbor; by steamer to
Albany, NY, by rail to Niagra Falls, into Canada, to Detroit,
to Chicago, and to Quincy; by river steamer to Hannibal; by
train to St. Joseph. Small Pox took several during this part
of the trip.
7/5/1860:
They left in The Tenth (and last) Handcart Company. The way I
underrstand this is that in the beginning Brigham Young had
wagon trains pulled by horses... money got tight and they
switched to handcarts pulled by oxen... money got tighter and
the last people had no oxen, so they pulled the hand carts by
hand:
http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Smy/200225_HandCart.jpg
My g-g-grandparents, and 4 children ages 14 10, 8, and 7
months pulled their hand cart from Omaha to Salt Lake City, UT
-- over 1,000 miles -- arriving in SLC on 9/24/1860 - 2-1/2
months.
See a 1912 picture of their handcart with my namesake and 4
of her adult children. She's the one in the dark dress. My
g-grandfather is Heber -- on the far right.

Just a question to you out of curiosity: "Heber" does not seem

Enjoyed reading about your namesake... had no idea you were "a
norksy". *grin*. My grandfather came from Norway, was a year
old when his family boarded a ship for Ellis Island... at that
time, his last name was "Dahl", but, for some reason, when his
family landed in NY, they changed their name to "Bue". when my
older grandson was in grade school, he did a report on his
Norwegian heritage... found my grandfather's name, year and
date that he arrived at Ellis Island. My Norwegian grandmother
lived til she was 96, that's my goal, too.
[Family name changed from Fjeld to Fields
after arrival here. People complained that
they didn't know how to pronounce that "j"...
so the change to Fields. -Maren]
Re: Iditarod
Have enjoyed all the information on the race... had no idea
so much was involved. Were you ever part of the volunteers,
or just someone who enjoyed the race?
[volunteer? TOO COLD!! HA! I lived in AK during
the time when 5-time winner Rick Swenson and
Susan Butcher were racing and Susan was winning
the Iditarod - late '80s. Towns had only one
radio station. And on that one station, they had
Iditarod "reports" throughout the day so it was
easy to follow the race. It was a different story
when I moved back to the "lower 48" in 1989...
there was NO Iditarod coverage AT ALL. Of course
I knew when it happened and I'd watch USA TODAY
to find out who won but that was about all the
news there was. When CNN (?) started up with
news 24/7 I would just sort of camp out on that
station till I heard who won. This was WAY before
the days of Iditarod.com. For several years
there was coverage from Cabela's but that
stopped after Iditarod.com started up. I got to
see ALL of Lance Mackey's 4-in-a-row wins (2007,
2008, 2009, and 2010) live on my computer... and
the rest is history. -Maren]

I was aware of a few divorced and/or previously married people
in the '50s, but not many. Mostly it was couples and families
where one or both parties was on a second marriage. Divorced
men could live and work here with or without a second wife.
But divorced women could not live here unless they were
employed. Many/most of the wives and moms in those days were
not employed. So I guess if a couple divorced and the mom was
not employed, she had to leave Richland, or at least move out
of town.
I remember thinking that Richland had a lot of churches
for the number of residents, and it seemed to me that most
families affiliated with or went to church. And, of course,
I don't recall any couples "living together" in those days.
I often think that we had fewer lost or problem kids, partly
because most of us had two parents and went to church. Maybe
that's naïve, but that's how it seemed to me in the good old
days.

I received an interesting(?) voicemail on my house phone,
which I no longer answer since I get so many solicitation
calls (although I do reply if someone leaves an important
message). "... we have received a legal complaint under your
social security number and your driver's license number. We
have received a legal complaint to block your social security
number immediately. So before we go ahead legally blocking
your social security number kindly call us back on the number
that is 240-654-1144. I repeat, 240-654-1144. Thank you, and
have a blessed day." It sounded like a recorded message with
the beginning cut off. The phone number given did match the
caller ID number. It was obviously a scam - how does a company
legally block someone's SS number? If I'd called the number
back (I didn't), I assume that whoever answered would have
asked for my SS number to see if it matched the one being
"blocked." It's a shame how stupid some scammers are. Doesn't
speak well for our educational system.
My wife and I stayed at the MGM hotel in Las Vegas a few
years ago. I still get emails from them. Their guest database
was hacked several months ago and the hackers got names,
addresses, phone numbers and birthdates, although no credit
card or bank information. According to the news, at least some
of the information was posted on a "dark" website. I wonder if
that's how someone got my phone number.

Re: Divorces
I knew two Richland families with kids friends of mine whose
parents divorced. I competed with the younger brother of one,
a year older than me, for the attention of a young lady we
both knew. The other family had a daughter about 5 years
younger than I was. I was home from Whitman College for spring
break and was going back to WallaWalla for an event. The 14-
year-old daughter asked to go with me so I took her. I got
into serious trouble with my dad when the car broke down on
the way home. Five minutes out of WallaWalla the engine quit.
I pulled over and tried to restart it. It started fine. I
raced the engine a couple of times, then pulled back onto
the highway. The engine quit again. We couldn't go back to
WallaWalla - couldn't find anyone to fix the car at 10pm at
night, and I didn't have money for a motel, nor the stupidity
to suggest that possibility to the girl's parents. I
eventually discovered that if I tried to go over 20 miles an
hour the engine would quit, so we drove all the way at 20 mph,
taking over two hours to get back to Richland. I also had to
pull over to the side to let cars going the speed limit pass
me. I kept hoping to see a highway patrol car, but never did.
At Wailua Junction, there was no place open at midnight to
phone from. I thought about stopping in Pasco at a pay phone,
but since we were only minutes from Richland I decided to keep
going. I got the girl home well after midnight. Her parents
were a bit upset. Dad didn't believe me when I told him about
the car, but he took it out the next day (Saturday) and
discovered I was right. Turned out the spring in the fuel pump
had broken. I decided not to take 14-year-old girls anywhere
after that.

Re Pulling Handcarts
My Wife's grandmother was 12 years old and an orphan. She was
adopted by a family passing thru Ohio, (where her parents had
died, leaving her). The Family that adopted her were Mormon
heading to Salt Lake City. She was the new designated puller,
She at the age of 12/13 did most of the pulling by herself
having help only on grades. She was treaded as a slave once
arriving in Wyoming where the family stayed. She was 14 when a
small crew of men came thru to help harvest the wheat. She met
one of them (age 15) and they ran away in the darkness and
fled to Moore, Idaho, having married at the first preacher
they came upon. He charged them their last dime to perform the
marriage. Gramma never became a Mormon but Grampa did and was
sent to Scotland as a missionary, leaving a 17 year old girl
with a baby on the ground and one in oven she was left to earn
a living as best she could while Grampa was gone 2 and 1/2
years. Because she was not herself a Mormon she received no
help from the church and was put upon by members as she put
it. I got to know her in her last years and listened her
storied as often as I could. The family still exists mostly
around Ririe and Rigby, Idaho.

Divorce was very hard for women when we were young, I only
knew 2 women who were divorced... Char Hutchinson + Jill's
mother. Jill came to live on Thayer when I was in 5th grade +
we quickly became best friends. We circulated between Les'
house, Marilyn Swan's ('63), Pam Flemings + Diane Dvorak's
('64) after school. Sleeping outside in the back yard was a
summer treat and I remember even doing that when Pam's family
moved to Pasco... oh, so many fun stories of those days.
Both women led their homes while working full time, never
complaining, and having a loving family atmosphere... No
different than mine, but I remember thinking how strong
they were, how their kids had more responsibility, but that
everything worked like clock work. Jill's mom worked out on
the project as a Secretary + Char worked at the Bon. For
years after we graduated from HS, I kept up w/Leslie via Char
whenever I was home by visiting the Bon + seeing Char, as we
moved through our lives. When my own daughter went through
divorce, I had a much greater appreciation for both of
these wonderful Richland moms, and I knew that "all" would
be alright because I had seen it before while growing up.
Nonetheless, to this day, I have "such respect and awe" at
single moms raising the entire family, often without help,
running a home, taking care of the yard + the car issues,
while working full time. My work load was never as hard as
theirs was... ever!

Re: Divorces... back in the day
I also think that in the days we were young, if there was a
divorce, It was just not talked about. We probably knew
more kids with at least one divorced parent than we thought.
Probably 15 or so years ago I was on the computer looking at
the Washington State Digital Archives and found the marriage
license for my wife's grandfather and where it asked for
previous marriage it said "widowed." I asked my wife if she
knew her grandfather had been married before he married her
grandmother. She said, "No, I wonder if mother knows," and
picked up the phone. Her mother said yes he had been and they
had a son who was quite the artist. She also complained that
with the internet nothing is private anymore. I wondered what
she was complaining about, a lot of people get married again
after their partner passes away, especially if they are young.
A number of years later I get on Ancestry and researched his
first wife whose name I did not even know. Turns out they
had actually divorced, and when she got married again in
California she also put on the paperwork that she was a widow
as well.
[hmmmm... two of my ex husbands are now dead...
does that make me a widow now? HA! -Maren]

While looking for something else in the Sandstorm Archives I
found in your post of Oct 11, 2009:
"The best WWII stories in Carmichael were from
Mr. Clayton's Math Class. Sharon TEMPLEMAN Watts
('55), Mary Lou FOELKER ('55), Pete HOLLICK ('55)
and I especially enjoyed Mr. Clayton's
recollection of when he was on the sinking
aircraft carrier, USS Lexington. Once the sailors
knew the ship was going down, someone hauled up
all of the priceless "ice cream" from the
officers' freezer and they shared it on deck. The
Lexington managed to travel 200 miles before it
finally sank."
When I read about the ice cream I thought to myself, "I heard
that just a day or two ago!!!" It was a WWII era training film
they showed us in boot camp. I looked for it on YouTube from
time to time, and finally someone posted it. It is a half hour
long and probably boring to most so if you want to see the
part about eating the ice cream just start watching at 19:55.
