Re: Moron UNREPS
One category of entry in the ship's deck log (maintained on
the bridge) is any highly unusual meteorological or biological
event. On this note, underway replenishments sometimes stir
up FLYING FISH between the receiving and delivering ship,
typically 75 to 100 feet apart, steaming at typically 17
knots. Flying fish, up to 18 inches long, with (almost as
long) wing-like fins forward, and a flick of the tail from
time to time aft in the water.
http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Bea/201001_Flying_Fish.jpg
The unsung WORLD RECORD was set by a flying fish in 1969
alongside and keeping pace with the carrier USS Hornet. It
stayed airborne for a clocked and exact 45 seconds and,
therefore, was duly recorded. My candidate, sometime during
the 1968-70 period, fell far short after only 23 second when
it suddenly took a 90-degree turn to starboard, leaving only a
grease spot on the hull of the adjacent replenishment ship.
Deck logs for commissioned U.S. Navy ships are maintained in
such repositories as the Naval History and Heritage Command,
Archives Branch, Washington Navy Yard, D.C., but now are being
SCANNED for eventual public access. . .
It then will be possible to contest the erroneous claim,
published in Wikipedia, which reads as follows: "In May 2008,
a Japanese television crew (NHK) filmed a flying fish (dubbed
'Icarfish') off the coast of Yakushima Island, Japan. The fish
spent 45 seconds in flight. The previous record was 42
seconds." The world record was actually set on an American
Navy ship in 1968, and only tied in 2008.

Regarding Jack GARDINER's ('61) post regarding Columbia Little
League teams in the early years of Richland youth baseball:
The Columbia Oil team that you and your brother Chuck ('63-RIP)
played with in the early '50s became the Densow Drug Team in
approximately 1956 or 1957 and Densow Drug still sponsors a
youth baseball team to this day (Densow's Medical) in the
Greater Richland Little League (which resulted from a merger
of the Columbia and American leagues).
Ralph McMahan is claimed to be the guy who brought Little
League to Richland in 1950. He was affiliated with the N and H
Flying A's (Tommy's Midgets) team in the Richland National
League. [See picture of McMahan here:

Re: USCG never leaves the states.
USCG vessels fought all over the world in WWII. The one USCG
member to be awarded the Medal of Honor died at Guadalcanal.
We had small boats on some rivers in Vietnam.
Currently, our Port Security mission has the responsibility to
protect ports wherever there is a US presence worldwide.
A significant amount of time in the drug interdiction mission
is spent in international waters with some patrols lasting
months.
One of the most dramatic drug-busting examples is the USCG
overhauling a drug-runner submarine (not really submersible
from what I heard) where the boarding officer is standing on
the vessel banging on the hatch while waves and wake are
threatening to pitch him off.

Re: Tricker-Treatin in Richland in the Fifties
Wuz there ever even such a place as Richland in the fifties? I
mean, wuzn't it all just some big dream-world, fantasy-land,
Oz, or Wonderland? Wuz there really a place where a kid could
go ANYWHERE as soon as the morning chores were done, and only
hadda be back ta within shoutin distance of home by
dinnertime? And then as soon as the dishes wuz washed and
dried, could take off again after dinner and stay out until
well after the street lights came on? How about a place where
alla the kids would run or ride their bikes behind the DDT
mosquito sprayer trucks, and the only concern wuz that they
might get hit by a car in the fog? And where everybody glowed
inna dark on acountta alla nuclear reactors practically in
everybody's back yard? Well, a course that last one really WUZ
a myth (the glowin part, not the reactor part, which wuz real
enough). But it musta been a real place, cause I know so many
folks with similar memories as mine. We can't all be the same
kinda crazy, can we?
Anyway, I mean what kind of a place wuz it that alla parents
would let their kids go out tricker-treatin without ANY adult
soopervision of any kind whatsoever? Now I suppose until you
were five or so, one a your parents would take you out while
the other stayed home ta hand out candy, but by the time you
wuz six or seven, they would be sendin you out with your big
sister or your big brother.
Now when I went with my big brother (who wuz just about the
coolest guy inna whole world ta my way a thinkin) we would
dutifully go ta three or four houses on our block, then he
would tell me "I'm gonna go meet up with my buddies and we're
gonna be movin pretty fast, so you can just meet up with your
friend across the street there and you and he can go
together." Well, I wuz sure disappointed about not gettin ta
go with the big kids, but I was at least pretty proud that my
big brother (unlike my parents) fully recognized that I WUZ
old enough and big enough ta be out tricker-treatin on my own.
When I went with my sister we would make it to only two or
three houses before she would have met up with a few of her
girl friends, and it would be ME that would say something like
"I don't wanta go tricker-treatin with a bunch a GIRLS". And
they would all say "FINE!" practically all together, and that
would be that. I would be off with my buddies never givin
another thought ta the stoopid girls.
Another magical thing about Richland in the fifties wuz there
musta been some kinda telepathy or sumpthin, cause even
without cell phones or nothin like that, as soon as one kid
went ta a house where they were handin out real FULL SIZE
candy bars (the ones that cost a whole nickel!), it wuz only a
matter of minutes before every kid in the neighborhood knew
about it and wuz makin a bee-line for that house before they
might run outta them candy bars.
I was never much scared of the Halloween stuff that was sposed
ta scare a kid. Ghosts never seemed real ta me cause they wore
those stoopid sheets with the stoopid eye holes in them. I
mean, why wouldn't ghosts just wear regular clothes? Or better
yet, why wouldn't they just go invisible so they could REALLY
scare the crap outta people like they were sposed ta? And that
Casper guy was SUCH a wuss!
And witches? They were nothin but a buncha ugly old women that
liked cats and wore stoopid lookin pointy hats. And flyin on a
broom? Come ON. Those brooms had no wings or a motor. How in
hell were they ever gonna fly. The only witch that I was ever
even a teensy bit scared of wuz the one in Wizard of Oz, and
that's only cause I was REALLY young when I first saw it, and
she was GREEN, and she talked in that really scary mean voice
and was always tryin' ta be mean ta Dorothy, so a guy had
every right to be a TINY LITTLE BIT scared a her.
The only real fear at Halloween was the rumors that there wuz
big kids out there stealin candy from the little kids, but
those musta just been rumors, cause I never ever knew a kid
that had their candy stolen, or even knew of another kid that
had their candy stolen. Now havin it stolen at home by your
big sister is a whole nother thing!
But I gotta admit that there was ONE house in Richland that
made me shiver and shake one Halloween night. It was the best
setup I have ever seen, either before or ever after. I still
don't know zactly how they did it, but they rigged up the
front door somehow ta sorta automatically open when you
knocked on it, and it gave out a real eerie screech as it
swung open. Then you saw a dark empty room, lit only by a
single candle, with no furniture or rugs or nuthin, except
there were a few very real lookin cobwebs hangin around in the
corners (not the cheesy lookin fake ones you see everywhere
these days). There wuz some kinda weird record playin low in
the background with this really strange music and all these
spooky soundin bumps and bangs, yells and screams, moans and
groans. It wuz REALLY creepy soundin. And then, there, sittin
across room on the stairs goin ta the upper floor, wuz this
ghost. Now I don't quite know how ta splain this, but this
ghost wuz WAY more than just a guy with a sheet over his head.
I can't describe just what it wuz about it, but somehow it wuz
the scariest ghost costume I have ever seen.
So you are standin there frozen in the open door with the hair
on the back of your neck standin up, and you suddenly realize
it wuz freezin cold in this room (WAY colder than it wuz
outside). Just then this disembodied voice (surely the voice
of the dead) says real low and scary "COME HERE". Now the one
thing that a kid fears more than fear itself is being called a
wuss or a fraidy-cat, so you somehow manage to stumble
woodenly across the floor and approach the apparition sitting
before you. "Put out your hand" commands that evil
otherworldly voice, and somehow just the sound of that voice
forces you ta do it. Before you know it, the ghost has
suddenly grabbed your wrist with a deathly cold, dry, rough
skinned hand, and then with its other hand slaps a nice big
fresh orange into your outstretched hand.
As the ghost releases you from its grip, you mutter an inane
"thank you" and spin around and run out the door with the
ghost's evil laughter ringing in your ears. "Damn", you think.
"I went through all that and I didn't even get a full size
candy bar!"
Course we all felt sorry for the dorks whose parents made them
"tricker-treat for you-nee-seff". Those poor suckers never got
any candy at all, just some pennies and nickels and dimes, and
THEY DIDN"T EVEN GET TO KEEP THE MONEY!! What a rip-off. Why
even bother goin tricker-treatin?
By the time you were nine or ten, you could fill up a grocery
bag nearly fulla candy in a good year. Then it was time to get
home ta check out your haul. Mom always gave my brother and
sister and me a couple of cookie sheets for this operation.
You would dump out all your candy onta one sheet, then one by
one sort it all out onta the other sheet. All the five cent
candy bars over here (it wuz a VERY good year if ya got more
than two or three), all the loose candy (candy-korns, jelly
beans, life-savers, other hard candy, etc.) in a pile over
there. Then the various kinds of wrapped penny-candy sorted
carefully by type. Then the oranges and apples in their place
(you usually ended up giving those to mom anyway). There were
always some cookies and other homemade goodies that got their
own spot on the cookie sheet.
While all the sortin wuz goin on it was time ta start the
tradin. Every kid had their dislikes (for me it was licorice,
Sniker's Bars, and Almond Joy bars) and every kid had their
favorites (for me it wuz Hersey bars, Milky Way Bars, and
Peppermint Pattys). You could almost always find a kid whose
favorites and dislikes lined up just the opposite of yours so
you could make a trade. If it wasn't your brother or sister
(but ya hadda be careful tradin with your sister, she wuz
always tryin to cheat ya) then it would be one a your buddies
at school the next day. "Hey, I'll give ya this here Snickers
bar for that Milky Way. Okay, okay, I'll throw in this piece a
bubble gum with it. We got a deal or what?"
So ya had all da candy you could handle for about a week, and
then one day ya realized, that ol cookie tray was startin' to
look pretty bare, just a coupla pieces of penny candy, a dried
up candy korn, a stick a gum, and maybe a crumbly cookie or
two. So it was time to CUT BACK!! Just one piece a candy after
lunch, and maybe two, no, only one, after dinner, then one
before bed. Yeah, that's it. That'll stretch it out. But no,
within a day or so, you knew it was gonna all be gone any
minute, and ya hadda face the fact that it was gonna be a
whole year before you was gonna have a chance to be candy rich
once again.

Let us remember that the US Air Force was born of the U S
Army, so it follows that the Space Force be born from the Air
Force. Onward and upward. Question is what are the limits?
US Navy moves below the surface and submarine service is
contained as part of the Navy. Hardly seems fair. Is the
Space Force going to be responsible for democracy on the
moon? Mars? The entire planetary system? The Kuiper Belt? The
Oort Cloud? Don't even get me started on black holes. I fore
see a massive recruiting program. In the words of S. R.

Next, accolades to Dave HANTHORN ('63) for recapturing the
fun it was to grow up in Richland in the '50s. I remember
my biggest worry if our walking the streets on a hot summer
night with a girlfriend, was that the police would take us
home to our parents because we were out On the street too
late.
I go down to my son's neighborhood to help pass out candy and
see all the costumes. My 3 year old granddaughter will be a
witch and her 2 year old brother will be a super hero of some
sort. All the neighbors are on the streets; it's really fun
to be there and take it all in.
Prayers for all who have been infected with this virus.
Happy Fall I am waiting results from my 3rd COVID test (the

up, was so important. Richland in the '50s was a good place

Mr. HANTHORN - Your Halloween tales have stimulated memory
of an account of mischief carried out by some surprising
delinquents (or maybe not so surprising). I refer to Bob
MOLLERUS, John GOGGIN and myself (all Class of '54). Talk
about just desserts! Our innocent minds concocted an
innocent-like smearing of a screened front porch of a home up
on Dawson leading to the top of the dike with over-ripe
tomatoes drawn from our gunny sack and heaved for best effect
in unison at a screened door. One of us (I don't remember
who) broke ranks and threw before the others. The resident,
having been a teenager once a long time ago, anticipated our
arrival and jumped out of the adjacent bushes bearing a long
barreled weapon of some kind, shouting "All right you little
bastards! Take this!"
I ran as fast as I could for shelter in the orchard at the
bottom of the rise where I knew there was a fox hole that
someone had dug for just such an emergency. MOLLERUS passed
me like I was standing still. I never saw anyone run like
that. He passed me with that funny gate of his - legs kind of
swinging out to the side in a way you'd think would have
thrown him to the ground. GOGGIN disappeared into the night.
I was sure I heard the armed pursuer breathing down our necks
when I leaped into the fox hole. It was filled with
tumbleweeds and underneath them, the careless remains of some
squatter too lazy to empty his/her bowels indoors. Could
being peppered with buckshot have been more humiliating? I
doubt it. I managed somehow to avoid having to explain the
damage to my clothing to my parents, but I don't recall just
how. Or maybe they knew and recalled their own teen years,
choosing silence over chastisement. I heard plenty of doozies
about their generation in our family. Ah - the great
outdoors...

Re: Space Force
Your comment regarding the Space Force is brilliant in
quoting S. R. Hadden, "Why build one, when you can build
two at twice the price?
It was the high cost of trying to duplicate President
Reagan's earlier Star Wars proposal (Strategic Defense
Initiative, SDI) that helped in 1991 to finally bring down
the Soviet Union as an historical basket case-economically,
but also theoretically, philosophically, morally and
civilization-ally. (Economic warfare instead of, say, nuclear
or chemical warfare!)
Therefore, as for your range of options for the galactic
reach of the Space Force, I vote for Black Holes. These most
explain the disappearing, long-range consequences of our own
astronomical national debt ($27 Trillion and counting, or
over $84,000 for every living man woman and child within our
borders, unless successfully kicked down the road to future
generations!)
Also, again regarding Hadden's "twice the price," and now
recalling another adage-"measure twice and cut once," another
Bomber (who mercifully shall remain nameless) recently
reported to me of his backyard carpentry: "I've cut twice
and it's still too short!"

Re: Halloween memories
I didn't attend grade school in Richland, I lived in Athena,
OR at the time, but all the memories I am reading sound just
like living in Athena at the time. It must have been like
that in a lot of towns.
Re: It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown
Maybe I should not admit this, but I once actually waited to
see the Great Pumpkin. I was attending WSU in 1967 and near
the front door of the Holland library someone had placed a
sign probably about 2 ft high by 8 ft wide, which read
something like, This location October 30 at 5:00 p.m. the
Great Pumpkin will arrive. I noticed the sign which I think
was up for a few days but had forgotten all about it. I just
happened to be coming out of the library at the right time
and there was a whole lot of people standing around. I
wondered what all those people where standing around for,
then I remembered the Great Pumpkin sign, so I waited with
them. He didn't show up so everybody left. The next day in a
class I was sitting across form a girl I told about it saying
he didn't show up. She said, "He never does." I thought she
must know something I don't know, but instead of asking, I
acted on the idea it is better to keep your mouth shut and
look like a fool than to open it and remove all doubt, I said
nothing. There was an article about it in the WSU Evergreen
daily newspaper. I knew of the Peanuts comic strip and had
seen one Charlie Brown episode on TV, in black & white, but
did not see the Great Pumpkin special until a year later.
Re: Covid-19 Halloween Robot
The son of a real good friend of mine from the '70s and part
of the '80s I reestablished contact with after his father
passed away has some robots he built in his front yard in
Portland, OR. He asked If I remembered one when I visited him
6 or 7 years ago saying it was originally built as a costume
when they lived in Kennewick. He set it up on a pallet and
said the neighborhood kids liked it. He decorates it for
holidays with things like bunny ears, a helmet and flag,
hearts, whatever fits the holiday. I got an email a few
days ago saying he is building another robot that would
automatically dispense candy. Said he thinks he has got most
of the bugs worked out, then has to decorate it. I will be
anxiously awaiting for him to post pictures on his smugmug
page.

I am so relieved; I just got the results of my COVID test
after I learned my friend in Memphis did get it. We were with
them Sept. 20-24, and I learned she had it Oct. 1, got tested
Oct. 2 and just got my results: negative. I am so glad I can

Re: Space Force
Your point is well taken about the efficiencies of
consolidation. On the other hand, the opposite argument
supports the federalist structure of the United States
government, with fifty states not consolidated into the
central government.
And, in the military the consolidated Department of Defense
is still divided into three (or four) separate branches-Army,
Air Force and Navy/Marines. A good thing, too, that the Coast
Guard is under the separate Department of Homeland Security,
since drug interdiction is prohibited from the other branches
by the Posse Comitatis Act of 1878/1956/1981 restricting use
of the armed forces in domestic matters. Likewise, the exempt
state-level Army and Air National Guard(s). I read at
Wikipedia-source of all esoteric factoids large and
small-that the Space Force, while within the Air Force, is
similarly exempt from the Act only because of its particular
mission.
So, yes, to consolidation for efficiency and coordination,
and yes again to differentiation, for the same reasons.

Halloween and deja'-vu all over again!
The esteemed Mr. HANTHORN ('63) gave a pretty accurate
description of early Richland Halloween. I tricked and
treated both South (Barth St.) and Northern (Jadwin) sides of
town. We always went to houses that we knew gave out the best
goodies. Some of the sadistic little ..... put dog poop in
paper bags on front steps, lit them on fire and rang the
doorbell. [Did you REALLY do that Frank? Nobody had doorbells
in Richland. -Maren} The alarmed residents stomped on the
flaming bags to put them out and splattered chocolate-looking
soft doggy-do everywhere. In junior high, we just roamed,
goofed off and ate candy. By high school, our "candy" became
beer and cruisin'. I notice Dave is starting to write in a
colloquial form of Riverese (our late, beloved David ('65). I
find myself doin' the same theng at timz. I spell too well to
make it a permanent habit (barring typos), though.
Now rural Cajun Louisiana is a different animal. The first 5
years were pretty normal with mostly kids and parents going
from house to house. We'd walk over to a neighbor's driveway
and backyard and drink beer and eat barbeque and boiled
seafood. People set up haunted houses and put up Halloween
decorations in their front yards. But after Katrina, some
areas started absorbing shady people from out of the area as
well as scam home-repair workers and companies. In other
areas, people were scared to let their kids trick or treat,
so hundreds of them migrated from their dangerous areas to
our nice, upper-middle class, safe area. We had to put chairs
on our front porch to hand out candy. Our streets were filled
like Mardi Gras, mixed with 4 wheelers and trucks pulling
flatbed trailers loaded with 20 or more people. We couldn't
get in or out of our driveways. After a few years of that
craziness and handing $100 or more in candy each year, we
just stopped. Even after you turned your lights out, some
would ring your doorbell up to about 10 pm. Of course, kids
and adults walked around drinking beer, as well. No more!!
Maren, just noticed in Jimbeaux's kindergarten picture from
L&C in 1950-51...#20, sitting 2nd from left is yours truly.

healed perfectly! He is going to do the 2nd surgery on Oct.
28 to repair and fuse my last 3 lower lumbar discs. Risks,
like the neck, are death, total paralysis, quadriplegic, etc.
Amazing, at 75, with Covid-19 and such risks, I don't even
care! He usually waits 12 weeks but said I'm so well-healed,
he's doing my surgery after 9 weeks!! No, I'm not crazy. If a
5 hour surgery will possibly fix me permanently, I'll take
the risk.

Re: Bike Rodeo
http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Sor/201006_00.htm
Don Sorenson's (NAB)'s pictures of the bicycle rodeo from
yesterday brought to mind my going to a bicycle rodeo back
in the early 1970s (1972-'74 most likely). I think they had
dispensed with the decorations on the bikes by that point. I
remember the course being set up in a parking lot - probably
at either the Big Pool (George Prout) or at Richland High, as
it had to have been close enough from my house for me to
bicycle there (my range away from home was self-limited when
I was younger, especially with a single-speed bike that
didn't go up the hill from either uptown or downtown to my
house at 1114 Marshall Avenue). It could have also been down
the hill from the high school at the parking lot for the
baseball fields. Chime in if you know which parking lot this
was done in or used to be done in.
I do remember that they had a white figure eight bordered
with white lines painted on the parking lot, that you had to
negotiate without touching the borders, something like a foot
wide path that you had to stay on. It may have even been
the same course that was used for getting a motorcycle
endorsement on one's driver's license. Anybody else remember
something like this? Then there were probably also the cones
that you had to weave through, and then demonstrate proper
braking before the stop line - you had to drive straight
through parallel lines and then stop right at the end.
As I get older these memories are really fading fast. I think
this was about the same age that myself and the other kids in
my neighborhood discovered the playing card in the bicycle
spokes, using an old playing card and one of mom's wooden
spring-loaded clothes pins to hold the card on the wheel
fork. I remember "spare" playing cards being in short supply,
and we would trade candy or pocket change with the other kids
to get a non-bent-up card which made the loudest noise.
It was good to be a kid, focusing on such important things as
finding a clean playing card (or which kind of candy to buy
at the Pennywise drugstore with our five or ten cents that we
got for returning the glass 7-Up bottles to the Thriftway
grocery store for mom), while seeing Walter Cronkite on the
evening news talk about what was happening in Phnom Penh and
other hard-to-pronounce places, and having absolutely no idea
or concept of what was really taking place in the world. Or
even knowing what our parents really did out at Hanford,
busily cranking out enriched uranium for the nuclear arsenal,
and starting to fill up the "new" double-walled tanks out at
the tank farms.
While on the topic of Hanford, has anybody done the satellite
photo tour of the site lately? I worked on the site from 1990
to 1993 and did electrical site assessments at many of the
reactor sites so we walked through most of the buildings (it
was amazing to see tags on equipment that had been turned off
20 years prior that had literally just been sitting there
with no maintenance or attention - very scary when it came to
vintage circuit breakers, still energized, that relied upon
hardened and cracked rubber diaphragms for timing of when to
trip, but I digress).
So many of the original buildings are gone that most of it is
unrecognizable. Even the 200 areas are so different now that
I don't recognize anything. The 300 area looks like a class 5
hurricane hit it and blew everything away. I guess that's
progress, but still in a way it saddens me because we
probably could have repurposed some of those facilities for
commercial use.
What is really special for me is that many of the same
activities and environment in Richland from the 1940s through
the 1960s that have been discussed on this forum so much
carried on well into the 1970s, and that I got to experience
as well. Thinking of my two kids now and their growing-up
years, well lately they just sit on the computer doing
"school" during the day and playing games the rest of the
time also on the computer. We have to force them to do other
things or to even go outside. That is a problem that we never
had while I was growing up in Richland. We had to go out and
invent our own games and fun to occupy the long summer days,
weeks, and months, and I will always treasure those years.

Re: Coast Guard Billets
Speaking about the Coast Guard being global - my then future
son-in-law joined the Coast Guard out of high school. He went
to Alameda, CA for training. Lucky to be there since my
daughter was in college at the San Francisco College of
Design and Merchandizing. His first assignment was on the ice
breaker 'Polar Star' and they headed for Antarctica with
several scientists on board to do studies for a few months.
He had some awesome pictures of the killer whales grabbing
the seals from the ice floes and shore. He traveled all over
the world and always had scientists on board on that boat. I
remember one time when they were at the north pole, his job
was to go ahead of the scientists with a pole probing the ice
so they didn't fall in a thin place while they did their
tests. The crew was also responsible for stopping the polar
bears from climbing up the mooring ropes to get on the ship.
When he was assigned to the Coast Guard Station state side he
began on the Pacific Coast at Ft. Bragg, CA. Their billets
were 3 years long and then moved to another station They
moved up the coast - Florence, OR, Tillamook, OR, and
Ilwacao, WA. He was assigned to the life boat school at
Ilwaco the first 3 years, then to Napa, CA for some training
for another year in anticipation of him becoming the
Commander of the Ilwaco Coast Guard station. All very
exciting for me because I had great places to vacation. They
spent a total of 7 years in Ilwaco then were transferred to
Tom's River, NJ where he was commander of the station.
Another great place to visit -we could take the boat up to
the statue of Liberty, etc. so the traininees could get some
experience. His final assignment was Juneau, AK. Another
fabulous place to vacation. One thing I did not realize was a
huge part of the Coast Guard was drug enforcement.
When he retired he went to work for "Sarah" as he puts it -
working for the State of Alaska doing what he did while in
the Coast Guard.
Then a buddy convinced him to transfer to NOAA. He got to do
the "Ice Road Trucker" bit, etc. researching the feasibility
of putting a station in Prudhoe Bay, AK. He was most happy
"driving the boat" no matter where he was. After a year NOAA
transferred them to Seattle and he again drives the boat for
the scientists to do their studies in Washington waters. A
favorite job is piloting the inflatable while the scientists
tag the Orcas or take data from them.

proclaimed that he had found India. Later he changed his mind
and said that he had discovered and New World. Not really too
sure when St. Brendan landed on the American continent, but
it was a few years before Leif "The Lucky" stumbled ashore in
either Labrador or Nova Scotia. At any rate, due to a poor
immigration policy, the North American continent was over
whelmed by persons of the European persuasion. This does,
however, give bankers an excuse to take the day off.

Back on March 5th of this year we had an estimate for some
remodeling work in our bathrooms; enlarging the master
shower, replacing counter tops and lights, etc. We are also
having ceiling lights placed in all of the rooms in the
house. We signed the contract shortly after and then COVID
hit - so we have waited until now for work to start. On
Monday (10/12) the demolition of the existing shower will
start so we have spent the weekend clearing out everything
that needs to find a home while the construction goes
forward. This involves plumbers, electricians, carpenters and
painters and it all has to be coordinated so we can still
live here while the work goes on. It also means I won't be
hauling out all of my Halloween decorations. I decided to go
with some fall items that are easy for me to get to and that
way I don't have to change decorations again until I get
out the Christmas stuff. We have most of the items that I
purchased for the work that's being done piled in front of
the storage area where I keep holiday decorations. I know -
my daughter says I have way too much junk - but I have 50
plus years of memories in those boxes so they stay!
Fall has finally arrived here in Richland and it seems like a
tree in the backyard decided to shed its leaves practically
overnight! Yesterday we could see green grass, but this
morning (after rain and wind) the lawn is covered in yellow
leaves. I'd say that about half of the tree is naked. I guess
our 80º days have come to an end and football weather is
back.

I think the steepness of the slope depends on one's
perspective. If one is an adult, standing upright, the
slope might seem something more than the beginners slope.
If one is a teen-ager, flat on his/her posterior, then
the slope may appear steeper than the advanced slope.
It's all in how you look at it.
Now, for the important part of this; the time has come to
wish Jerry PURKHISER ('54) a "Happy Birthday!". Consider

I've seen this post a couple of times this week and am struck
by the thought that some of us take a lot of years to figure
life out and some seem to know much earlier.
#6 about perfection over peace... I've chosen peace every
time. Someone else can take care of making life "perfect".
For many years I have subscribed to #9... walk away from
people who don't value me as I am. What you see is what you
get... so thankful hubby thought I was enough all those years
ago. It's too much work trying to please everyone and my life
overall has been pretty darn good. That doesn't mean if the
Publisher Clearing House van pulls up in front of my house
today, I'll refuse the money which could improve our life in
lots of ways. I'm contented in my life - not stupid!
Re: Losing our fur babies
Bill (NAB) and I had to make the decision to have our sweet
Shiloh put to sleep after 18 years a few days ago. That is
perhaps one of the toughest things to do and I sympathize
with any of you who walked that path. I keep looking for her
everywhere as she was most often in my way and underfoot,
especially if I was in the kitchen. It's incredible how those
sweet critters worm their way into our hearts and leave a big
hole when they are gone. Bomber tears.
Re: Big Wind
We had some pretty good winds in the Tri-Cities the past
week. I heard 100 mph somewhere in Eastern Washington. We had
gusts of 50+ and blowing dust really bad in places in the
Tri. I guess we shouldn't complain too much. I see another
storm is winding up and headed towards the Gulf coast. How
much more can y'all stand, Maren?!?
[I keep "talking" to those "disturbances".
I usually tell them to "Go on up to the
north Atlantic and leave us alone." -Maren]
It's beautiful here this morning, a little breezy, 60° headed
to mid 70s, leaves starting to turn orangey, yellow and red.

blow out sprinklers, I saw mid to low 30s in the forecast for

Re: Random Act Of Kindness?
Day before yesterday my wife, Ruth, and I were having brunch
at Sterling's Restaurant here in Richland (a local favorite -
arguably best breakfasts in town.) As we finished our meal,
our server, Carmen, told us that a lady had paid our check.
Carmen claimed not to have seen the lady, and said she had
been notified by a manager. I recall that we had looked
around at everyone nearby and saw no familiar faces, so we
have no idea who "treated" us.
We can only surmise that it was a "random act of kindness"
occurrence. Since 2020 has been a truly unsettling and
stressful year, I must say that this happening was an
"attitude changer".

I am so sad that my friend Billie passed away on October 13

Billie and her husband Ted NETH ('55) are the perfect example
of a loving, creative partnership. Billie proudly displayed
Ted's art work on her walls. I wish I had pictures,
especially of the gorgeous large rhythmic metal works.
Billie and Ted were dedicated Richland Bombers who drove me

Billie was concerned about my failing night vision.
For several years we celebrated Taco Tuesday at the West
Richland Golf Club. Billie created a calendar, "Taco Tuesday
Christmas Belles 2020," which she presented to the nine
ladies who attended her Christmas party. Ted had created a
life-size Santa Claus. He photographed each of us on the

Re: Kamiakin Country: Washington Territory in Turmoil 1855-1858
I just finished Jo MILES' ('64) scholarly 2016 work,
"Kamiakin Country: Washington Territory in Turmoil 1855-1858"
and I must give credit where it's due. The book covers its
subject matter in exhaustive detail. The sheer amount of
research that went into producing it is beyond impressive.
Fiction writers like myself have it easy in comparison. We
have a saying, "If there isn't a historical incident on
record to build your story around, make something up." Jo
didn't have that luxury. There are no doubt plenty of people
around who know something about parts of the various
incidents he covered, so he has to get it right or suffer a
blow to his reputation. I'm daunted by the vast amount of
materials he researched. And, having done that, he then had
to sift the meaningful from the mundane. It requires a
scholarly discipline I don't have. A very disciplined work
that can serve as a reference tool for future explorers of
the era. Great job, Jo. I'm impressed.

A truly uplifting story Re: having your breakfast payed by a
person or persons unknown! And his willingness to pay it
forward.
It has stirred me to quit squeezing my wallet. Since my wife
passed (9/09/20) I have taken to eating breakfast at a small
but outstanding restaurant. I happen to be sitting in a small
booth behind two older ladies. I happen to over hear one say
to the other, that she often relied on her son who sent her a
check every month to help her make ends meet. She was deeply
concerned as to what the Covid-19 muck-up would do to that as
he was in lock down and was not working for the time being.
The other lady then said she was also concerned for like
reasons.
Well no way could I sustain either one, much less both. But
I damn sure could afford to pay for their breakfast. So I
did. I have no idea how it may have struck the ladies, but I
have had a lightness of spirit all day. Something I have so
urgently needed!
So I thank you, Dick, for the gentle kick in the butt to
loosen my wallet! and easing my personal burdens!

Re: Paying it Forward
How are things going with "paying it forward"? Let's all
spread the simple breakfast-check thing like a sort of
controlled nuclear reaction, but what about the picture on
the big screen? Kicking the can down the road-the unreal and
blank-check national debt comes to mind. Now some 21 Trillion
dollars, equally striped in both blue and red. (Again, that's
$84,000 per customer alive today, all headed downstream onto
the heads of future generations.)
From our alma mater Sophomore English classes, we surely
recall Ralph Waldo Emerson who said it best about paying it
forward: "We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we
borrow it from our children." Some credit this wisdom to the
20th-century Mahatma Gandhi, but he had studied the early
19th-century Emerson and was only quoting this American
writer.
Likewise, in his famous campaign of civil disobedience
against the colonial British occupation of India. Gandhi's
idea ("satyagraha") again was crystalized from Emerson and
his famous essay "Civil Disobedience" of which we student
rebels also diligently imbibed in the hallowed halls of
Col-Hi in eastern Washington.
I might have skimmed over a few lines in Emerson, but today
looking at Seattle and Portland, I don't recall reading
anything about looting ye olde shoppe keepers on main street,
or torching police horses or cars-or the cancel-culture's
toppling of statues of dudes named Thomas Jefferson or
Abraham Lincoln or Junipero Serra. Statues, like the
breakfast check, on the big screen, are just another simple
way of paying "it" (historical memory and our real national
indebtedness) forward.

Yeah, I did miss National Sisters Day back in early August,
but today we need to acknowledge the birthdays of a couple of
Bomber Bests. There are always sisters in the headlines,
being recognized for their deeds and misdeeds.
We used to enjoy the Lennon Sisters on Saturday nights, when
we were grounded and had to miss Hi-Spot and watch TV with
our parents. Sitting in the living room, eating pop corn,
just like a real family. They were always resplendent in
complimentary pastels and their four part harmony was just,
wunnerful, wunnerful.
Bette Davis and Joan Crawford weren't the poster children for
sisters in "What ever happened to Baby Jane". Baby Jane
should have been given a time out, but then who would have
looked after "Blanche".
Venus and Serena can still tear it up on the rare occasion
when they're both healthy.
There's that train wreck known as the Kardashians, I guess
they're related, but that really doesn't have anything to do
with their stories.
There was Sister Mary Stigmata, "The Penguin" in the Blues
Brothers. The mere thought of whom makes me flinch.
Then there are the Birthday girls, Connie Mac and Lucy
FOSTER. Supposedly the odds of two siblings having the same
birthday is 500,000 to 1. Regardless, there could have been
some serious cost savings, as long as they could agree on the
flavor of the cake and icing.
Happy Birthday and here's to many more.

The Tuatara starts at $1.9 million. The first production run

qualify for a record title, the car must be a production

Yesterday my husband, Lance ('60), had carpal tunnel surgery
on his right wrist. Today he is doing well and has had no
pain since the nerve block wore off last night. Now he needs
to keep it elevated for the next few days and can't use it
for the next two weeks. Golfing is out of the picture for a
while, but he will be able to drive after the two weeks are
passed. He is already becoming bored with the inactivity and
it's only been one day..
Our bathroom remodel is coming along and is looking good. We
had ceiling lights put up in all of the rooms and it has made
a world of difference! So glad I added that to the contract.
Saturday is supposed to be cold and ugly here. Sounds like a
great day to be inside to watch my [Ohio] Buckeyes host the
Cornhuskers. So glad the Big 10 is back!

Re: Don't Be A Victim
I'm sharing this with all you Bombers for the safety of your
female family members, especially the young ones who are
always on their phones.
After watching on security tapes of abductions,
the Nat'l security put out these results on
how not to be a victim.
This is a condensed version.
When leaving a store, mall, home, etc. or
just going to your parked car, do the
following things:
1. Leave your cell phone in your purse or
pocket. By looking at your phone, you've
just become prey. You're not paying
attention to your surroundings.
2. If you see someone watching you, go
back into the store and get an employee
to escort you to your car or go back
into your apt.
3. Don't go directly to your car.
Walk past it, turn around and see if
someone is following or waiting ahead.
4. If all clear, walk around your car,
looking in the windows. Look under the
dash on the passenger side, the floorboards,
or for a person hiding in the back.
5. Look around before opening the door.
This is your most VULNERABLE time. A
person can rush you from behind and
incapacitate you.

Ernie de la BRETONNE's (?60) wife dropped off this old
cookbook today and I took a trip down memory lane. I?m
guessing it?s mid '50s era, about 50 pages and I recognized
a few names. I scanned a few pages on my phone. Some of the
names you might recognize are Edith Burks, Mrs. William
Armstrong, Mrs. H.W. Persons, Alice Thoreson, Mrs. G.R.
McKinney, Mrs. C.F. Setbacken, Mrs. G. C. Oberg. There was
another cookbook - a souvenir copy for the 40 year reunion of
the White Bluffs-Hanford Pioneer Association - The Everyday
Cookbook arranged by the Ladies Aid Society of the First

weekend Waterfront Blues Fest. In the clubs we boogied to
Canned Heat, Roy Buchanan, Dickie Betts, Lonnie Mack,
Stevie Ray Vaughn, Smoking Joe Kubek, Jimmy Thackery, Joey
DeFrancesco, the awesome Jimmy Smith and many, many more. At
the Portland Colosseum you treated me to Simon & Garfunkel &
the Everly Brothers, at the Portland Civic Center we saw "The
Million Dollar Quartet". We haunted used record shops in
Seattle. We spent a long weekend eating prime rib all over
Seattle. For lunch we had fried mushrooms and burgers at Kid

forget Herman & the Hermits at the Centralia Fair! Thank you

Re: OLD Waist Gunner
On another front the last member of Day's Pay crew Edwin
Stewart, waist gunner, passed away October 10th. He was given
a full military honors funeral. The flag was given to his son
Edwin, Jr. Ed Sr. was the baby of the crew and was watched
over by his "older" crew members. Like the other crews they
were close as one would imagine given the trials they endured
thru 35 missions. In the '80s nearly all the crew reunited
for a few days at Charlie Purcell's, ball turret gunner, home
in North Carolina. According to those in attendance they
picked up where they left off decades earlier. Attached is a
photo of Ed behind his 50 Cal.

The photo must have been taken on the ground or at low
altitude, so we can see what he looked like. Imagine what it
was like in combat, flying over 200 mile per hour, 4 or 5
miles up, where the air temperature was well below zero,
between two open windows, having to defend your plane and
your buddies against enemy fighters. He would have had to be
wrapped up like a mummy to survive the wind and temperature,
for many hours, and fight like that.

Re: Sharon TATE ('61wb-RIP) and Manson family.
In response to post from Manny MANKOWSKI ('55).
I remember Sharon and her family very well. Her parents,
Major Tate and Doris, were friends with my mom and dad, Col.
McGrath and Betty. Major Tate and my dad were officers at
Camp Hanford in the late '50s and early '60s. Years ago I
was employed with the Bureau of Land management (BLM) and had
some contact with the Manson family in the Death Valley area.
Specifically in Surprise Canyon (located just below the ghost
town of Panimint City). This area, known as Chris Witch
springs, is located one canyon to the North of the canyon
where the Barker Ranch is located. The Hippies and the Manson
family used to frequent the pools of water created by the
natural springs. I feel fortunate that I wasn't buried with
so many others reputedly buried around the Barker Ranch. You
just never know who you are going to meet out in the "wilds"
of Death Valley.

>>From: Jim HAMILTON ('63)
It was about this time, fifty years ago today, that I punched
my ticket and became a participant in "that most recent
unpleasantry in Indochina". The forever young and always
lovely Miss Nancy ('65) and I had spent the weekend with Bob ('63)
and Karen Mathis and we all had dinner on Saturday evening
with Rob ('63) and Jamie Hills('64) at the Ye Olde Spaghetti
Factory. A pretty heavy duty evening for me, as not knowing
what laid ahead I didn't and was hoping it wouldn't be the
last supper.
Come game day, I caught a hop from McChord to Travis on some
General's jet and checked in about six hours early. I've
always been an "early arriver", but six hours, that was a
first. Having spent years with Pook ('63-RIP), I was used
to thirty minutes late being twenty minutes early. As our
departure time approached, I found myself with more and more
people I knew from Vietnamese language school. When our
flight came up on the board, I thought, "what in the Hell
is a Seaboard World Airlines ". I found out the hard way.
Emirates or Singapore First Class it wasn't. I've said many
times, "it was the only aircraft I've ever flown where every
seat was a middle seat". Swore I'd never "Seaboard" again,
until 49 years ago today when it was my ride back to the
world. Then, trust me, it was worthy of a mention and five
stars in Travel & Leisure or Conde Nast.
To all my brothers and sisters, "Welcome Home" and David, I
miss you every single day.

OK... so I had 5 teeth pulled Tuesday and it was rough. I
won't lie... I questioned my sanity as she was pulling so
many... I opted for Nitrus oxide -- which insurance didn't
pay for -- and about in the middle somewhere I asked the doc
"Hey, why don't you kick the nitrus up to 10 and just put me
OUT for the rest of this?"
The IDEA was that they put the new lower denture in right
away and it's supposed to help with the swelling. Well, that
was a bitch and I'm not sure it helped with the swelling at
all. I could not swallow AT ALL without pain. Was told to
leave it in for 24 hours, take it out and rinse with salt
water and put it back in... Well I couldn't get it back in
without horrible pain so I said to heck with it and left it
out so I could at least eat some mashed potatoes and
scrambled eggs. Adjustment appointment tomorrow (Friday)...
We'll see if they can get it in without pain...
So I felt much better last night (was that Wednesday?) and
as I was working on the Sandstorm for the 29th, the power
started to flicker. Hurricane Zeta took out my power for 24
hours. So I just rested and slept and ate...
Not much damage here -- actually more than from Hurricane
Katrina back in '05... Zeta took out most of the old, rotten
fence and when it fell that knocked over my garbage can...
and there was one pecan tree in the orchard that was
uprooted. That's it. And it only blew for about an hour...
it was FAST...
My daughter and her family... and her cousin and his family
showed up to get the fence out for trash pick up... son-in-
law took a chain saw to the uprooted pecan tree and all the
kids drug all the branches out for trash pick up...
Bomber cheers,

You certainly deserve a day or two off for all you do to keep
the Sandstorm up and going!!!! Rest up and take care.

it's getting rather cool out. But, taking advantage of
the warm up (Indian Summer?) for the next few days
before it gets cold again to put my garden to bed for
the winter.

I am saddened to see several Bomber deaths in recent
Sandstorms. The Obit for Edna Wiley McKeown was in the Oct
30th Tri-City Herald. Wow, what a wonderful life she lived! I
knew Jim ('53) in High School and commend him for 1. giving
Edna the freedom to do all that traveling and 2. caring for
her so wonderfully in her final years. A story of true love!
Re: My Old Piano
Although the Piano is still here, the carpet was taken the
day we got all of it up and out to the sidewalk! Monday
evening, Mr. Dickerson, Piano Tuner,
will come and make an offer. I was so in hopes the woman who
wanted it for herself and her daughters, would be able to
find a mover to take it to her home.

hope all of you are staying well and doing okay in

Re: Snaggle Tooth
Dear Maren,
I feel for you. Nothing fun about getting teeth pulled. In
other words, the teeth have come to the end of usefulness...
and cannot be saved.
Backing up a bit. When I first came into the Veterans
Administration on Jan. 31, 1969 as a wounded veteran with the
loss of use of both hands, I received a bit more compensation
(like $360 a month-) than the toilet cleaner, of which I
figured was going to be my first job at Hanford. BUT, I had
no dental insurance.
I wrote a letter to my Congressman, still have that letter...
Warren Magnuson. Didn't they name a bridge after him in WA
state I can jump off- I asked him how I was supposed to get
dental insurance for myself and family when after I paid for
it I needed rent money.
Senator Magnuson sent my letter to the VA... biting the hand
that fed me... and a letter to me stating there was no such
thing as dental insurance for 100% disabled veterans (1971-)
as of that period of history. DUH. Exactly. AND why I am
writing to YOU. Do I look like just another pretty face- I
voted. Straight ticket. Have no idea what they stood for...
but. At least he wasn't bald.
Ten years later after learning to never write to your
senator, the Veterans Administration (Congress-) gave me
(law-) my dental, but not my family. Only me. For those
taxpayers who pay for my dental today... trust me, you pay
for it, but it cost me the loss of use of both my hands. Do
not forget that... or the misery. I have lived a life that
has yet ended and you all helped me. I will give those who
deserve kudos... you know who you are... I could have ended
my life long ago... on that bridge, but God told me to stick
around and harass those taxpayers who were against the
veterans who fought the Vietnam War and still believe I
should have taken the five years in the pen and/or Canada...
and be a burr under certain saddles. Prayer IS interesting.
Marines. Marines are fun. You ever hear of a Marine (I
always capitalize that word, Corpsman too) being told to go
somewhere and you are the parent or grandparent- Marines go
hunting people. And we become the hunted. Period. Never
forget that.
For those of you from my generation... God Bless your
children and grandchildren for your indiscretions. I will
not comment further on American history.
So, Maren, I now have dental at the VA. They cannot save a
tooth. Therefore it needs extraction. Dec. 14. The VA has
given me two months of pain meds. I would sell those meds on
the street, nevertheless I do not need the taxpayers money
nor five years in the pen and/or Canada which is now off
limits. Now, this is the kicker. The VA called me and asked
if I needed a temporary tooth after my extraction (the tooth
just right of my two front teeth... lateral incisor, I
think). I told them I wanted no temp because my mother was
born in the Missouri Ozarks in '27 and I can deal with that
finger-pointing, sand kicked in my face, hodad harassment in
Orange County, California.
And, to end this, I have requested a gold tooth replacement
because I have always wanted to be a pirate on Oct, 31.
Just think about those replacement teeth and the GM
production line, Maren. Trust me.

Happy Birthday on haunt day, Phil. From 8th grade to high
school to the so-called "Buddy System" in the USMC -- Happy
Birthday and God Bless. All my love, my brother.
