Re: Edna (RIP)
To begin with, thanks to Marilyn "Em" DeVINE ('52), an upper
class person at the time, for those kind words about Edna.
I've had many emails and phone calls since it ran in the
Herald. Actually, I felt remiss in waiting so long to do the
obit... somehow I just seemed to have a problem getting
anything together to sit down and write it... I would start
and then crumble. So our daughter Deb flew down from Oregon,
kicked me in the butt and said we were going to do it that
day. Period. She also picked out the photo, which I'm really
grateful for, because it was only 2/3 years old and really
caught the essence of her and that smile. Edna was a prolific
photographer, and there are hundreds of photos in boxes that
we had to choose from. Now to figure out what to do with her
30 or so photo albums of each of her trips. I had to buy a
couple of bookcases from Ikea to house them when we moved
down here in Murrieta, CA. They were great comfort to her,
and almost every day she would go through one of them with
me... what a treat that was, although I'm sure I didn't
appreciate it at the time.

certain punctuation marks get changed when your entry has
been translated into AS?
[Yes I've noticed! I don't know WHERE
they come from, but sometimes when I
copy/paste, the punctuation marks are
WAY different from what I know you mean.
good example: "...tis the 39^th birthday

Re: The Columbia Queen
When the Columbia Queen was brought up last June in the
Alumni Sandstorm I thought, I have some pictures I took of it
after it was damaged. Well, I run across some prints I made
although have not found the negatives. I think they must have
been taken in 1967 or 1968.
It was very hard to find information about the Columbia
Queen's history, but I did find some. I have an article I
abridged quite a bit (The Cliff Notes version follows).
Vashona was a Mosquito Fleet steamer that was built in 1922
and served for nine years on the Burton-Tacoma run before
being sold to the Kitsap Transportation Company to carry
passengers on the Bremerton-Seattle run. She was sold to the
Gray Line Company in the late 1930s, renamed Sightseer and
began serving as a tour boat. After the Seattle Worlds Fair
in 1962, she was sold to a tour operator in the Tri-Cities
area and was once again renamed, this time as the Columbia
Queen.
Vashona was built to replace the steamer Vashon built in 1905
for the newly formed Vashon Navigation Company. Vashona was
126 feet long and 24 feet wide. The steam engine from the
steamer Vashon was used to power the new vessel. Vashona
served the Quartermaster run from 1922 until May 1931,
Vashona was sold to the Kitsap Transportation Company and
worked the Bremerton and Harper routes into the late 1930s.
Gray Lines Tour Company purchased Vashona, renamed her
Sightseer, and continued as a Seattle tour boat through the
Seattle Worlds Fair in 1962.
Vashona/Sightseer was sold in 1963 to John Houston of
Richland, WA who renamed her Columbia Queen, her third name,
and began running excursions on the Columbia, Snake and
Yakima Rivers from the Tri-Cities. The transition to the
Columbia River did not go smoothly for the former Vashona.
While moving from Puget Sound to the Tri-Cities, she blew a
boiler near Portland and had to be towed to a shipyard for
repairs. Once back on the river and headed to the Tri-Cities,
she blew another boiler plug near Sacajawea State Park and
had to be towed to the Tri-Cities for further repairs. On her
maiden voyage on the Columbia, she ran aground on a sandbar
and was towed off by the Coast Guard. Then, on the evening of
June 13, 1964, as the Columbia Queen left the dock for a
fundraising cruise for senatorial candidate Richard
Christensen, she was caught in strong currents and thrown
broadside against a bridge abutment. Two passengers were
slightly injured, and the boat returned to the dock. But the
damage, a deep gash in the hull, while initially viewed as
minor, proved difficult and expensive to repair. Vashona/
Sightseer/Columbia Queen settled into the mud and sat
derelict for six years before the Corps of Engineers declared
her abandoned and tried to auction her off before deciding to
demolish her in September 1970. The ship's 6-foot bronze
alloy propeller was given to the Tri-Cities Naval Reserve
Unit for display, and the bulldozer operator who did the
final demolition declared, "She's the toughest old lady I
ever saw," a fitting epitaph for the 48-year-old
Vashona/Sightseer/Columbia Queen.
"Columbia, Snake and Yakima Rivers"--???--Why do I doubt
the Yakima River??? Is it because the Yakima River is too
small for her, or because both the highway and the railroad
bridge at the mouth of the Yakima River too low???
If you would like to read the full article it is here:
Click for the full article
Herald and News, Klamath Falls, Oregon, June 3, 1963, page 2.
THROUGH THE LOCKS The S.S. Columbia Queen, a 300-passenger,
110-foot long excursion ship comes through the locks of the
McNary Dam on the Columbia River on its way to Pasco where it
will dock temporarily. When facilities are complete, the ship
will be stationed at Kennewick, Wash. Aside from ferry boats,
the Columbia Queen is the first passenger boat of its size to
sail the Columbia in many years. (I found this online and
sounds like a caption for a picture, but I didn't want to pay
to look at it.)
I also found a newspaper article about the accident in the
Spokane Daily Chronicle I will post as a picture.
http://alumnisandstorm.com/Xtra/Ham/201102_Columbia_Queen.jpg
I also found a photograph of the Columbia Queen with the name
"Sightseer" for sale on ebay. Jim Hamilton ('63) or Frank
Osgard (63wb) might be interested in buying it.
Photo for sale on eBay
A larger photo, suitable for framing, of the Sightseer is
available at Amazon.
Available at Amazon
May 22 1948 there was a five mile steamboat race between the
Sightseer and the Virginia V across the Seattle waterfront;
the Virginia V won by a small margin. The Virginia V is still
operating and is about to celebrate her 100th birthday. It
appears to be very similar in design to the Columbia Queen
but somewhat smaller.

Re: The Virginia V
https://www.virginiav.org/
The Virginia V was the premiere venue for UW student
group-date events back in the '60s, and before and after.
In those days she was berthed northwest of the current South
Lake Union site. The outing involved a late-afternoon passage
through the Ballard Locks into Puget Sound, and then across
to a forested beachfront state park on the west side. Then
back on board, either inside or on deck under the stars, and
back to the Seattle-skyline city lights.
My guess is that the Virginia V never could have made it up
the south fork of the Palouse River to the Missouri Flat
Creek and Paradise Creek in WSU's Pullman. But, on the other
hand, the UW crowd never enjoyed anything quite like the WSU
cow-chip throwing contest. Except for the local Cow Chip
Cookie Factory, and even here the top-of-the-line selection
isn't plate- or discus-sized any more.

Re: Sharon TATE ('61wb-RIP)
Manny MANKOWSKI ('55) and Dennis McGRATH ('63) recalled the
sad memory of Sharon TATE and the Manson family. I read
"Helter Skelter" by Vincent Bugliosi about 40 years ago and
was stunned. Recently the movie "Once Upon A Time In
Hollywood" has the tragedy as part of the plot. Intrigued, I
discovered the more recent book "Chaos: Charles Manson, the
CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties" by Tom O'Neill..
O'Neill convincingly debunks Buliosi's book as self serving
aggrandizement. O'Neill spent 20 years gathering facts for
"Chaos" and does confirm that Dennis McGRATH is right to have
been concerned for his safety. The overwhelming take away
from the book is that so many people/authorities involved in
the investigations remain tight lipped and will not discuss
the events, including those around Surprise Canyon. "Chaos"
helps confirm that truth is stranger than fiction.
Re: The Portland Mavericks
An interesting Bomber related documentary is The Battered
Bastards of Baseball. When Becky WERSEN ('65) and I moved to
the Portland area in 1974 the Portland Mavericks baseball
team was in the news. Jim VAN WYCK ('66 younger than Pete
('64) was part of Bing Russell's management team. Bing
Russell was an accomplished TV actor and father of Kurt
Russell. The Mavericks were the hot ticket and sometimes a
bit like the PGA Champions Tour where we could see fading
baseball stars. The attendance at the Mavericks games was
huge. Jim VAN WYCK must have been a spokesman as I recall his
name in the news regularly.

Re: Do Sled Dogs Get Frostbite?
By Lori E. Gordon, DVM
Veterinary Surgical Care, Inc.
"The short answer is yes, sled dogs do get
frostbite. The details, however, give a
better picture of why, where, when, and how
often this occurs, as well as steps mushers
take to prevent frostbite and treatment
methods once it is diagnosed.
Frostbite is, quite simply, the freezing of a
body tissue. This is a concern when an
unprotected area of the body is exposed to
extremely low temperatures. Not only severe
cold, but wind and moisture play a part.
Wind chill worsens the effect of cold
temperatures, and a moist exposed body part
will be at higher risk. So depending on the
conditions for the race that year, frostbite
may be seen more often or some years not at all.
Dog on the trail at Unalakleet curled up asleep
Sled dogs are acclimated to the cold
environment in which they will run. Even
shorter-haired dogs will grow a thicker coat
that protects them from the chill, which is
why you may see snow on top of a curled-up
sleeping dog - they are so well insulated
that they keep all their body heat in and so
the snow on them does not melt! Parts of
their body most susceptible include tips of
the ears and tail, tips of their toes, and
their genitalia (vulva and nipples for the
girls, prepuce and testicles or the boys).
Both physically and behaviorally 'winterized'
dogs are designed to avoid frostbite. Ears,
tails, prepuce, and vulva are protected by
fur that has thickened for the winter, and
the way they curl up to rest also protects
the mammary chain and testicles. In addition,
mushers provide straw to elevate their sled
dogs off the snow. There are also fur-lined
covers mushers place to further protect these
vulnerable areas. While the dogs are trotting
along the trail, their vascular system is
pumping blood to the farthest reaches of
their body, an additional warming and
protective measure to keep ears and tails
from getting too cold. Their toes are also
protected by the booties worn during the
race.
If a sled dog has frostbite, the musher will
treat by keeping the area clean and covering
it to protect from further injury. Frostbite
lesions are usually minor, and rarely are the
reason for a musher to remove the dog from
the team to be cared for by veterinary staff.
During the past eight years treating sled
dogs, I have seen only a handful of frostbite
cases. But if we do get one, there are
several treatment options, depending on the
specific case. These include drying,
cleaning, and warming up the area - these
dogs may also be brought into a heated
enclosure for the duration of their stay.
Antibiotics and pain relief medications
may also be used to assure a quick and
comfortable recovery.
In summary, yes, frostbite is a concern for
sled dogs during the Iditarod, especially in
extreme cold, wind, and moisture conditions.
It is something dogs naturally and mushers
know to protect against, what to look for and
how to treat if it occurs - which thankfully
is not very often."

I'm TRYING, but WORD does NOT make things easy... OK, I've
clicked my docx file and opened it in WORD. I made one little
change and now I want to PRINT... do you think I can find a
PRINT option? Maybe there's an easy way to do it, but I
couldn't find it. I looked at EVERY menu and found NO print
option anywhere. I even Googled it and Google told me to
click the Print option in the FILE menu, but there was no
PRINT option there. In frustration I finally just gave up
and pressed CTRL P (which works in many other programs)... I
figured what the hey!! AND NOW there was a PRINT option. How
the hell do I get that without CTRL P? Or is that the ONLY
way to print anything in WORD? Like I say, WORD is NOT user
friendly (IMO).

Re: Need a WORD expert
I think (MAYBE) I've figured out the problem -- with a lotta
help from several Bombers! Well, maybe reasons I'm having
problems with WORD:
1. I NEVER run any of my programs on FULL SCREEN unless I'm
FORCED to do so.
2. I increase font size so I can SEE/READ text.
3. I'm a WordPerfect expert.
4. I hate Microsoft, aka Weaselsoft!
So, what was happening to the PRINT option? It was NOT there,
but I didn't know that if I clicked "more..." that's where
Weaselsoft hid the print option... along with some other
stuff.
So, that tells me that Weaselsoft is NOT user friendly to old
people with vision problems.

Re: Old fire department photos

My thanks to Randy BUCHANAN ('57) and Don Sorensen for the
old fire safety photos. My father, Milt Wight, is in photos
#1 and #5. He was recruited into the Richland Fire Department
in 1948 by the incumbent chief Ray Hare. They created a new
position for dad, I think, called Administrative Officer at
the rank of captain. Dad loved the job and in particular fire
safety and prevention programs. He later was a battalion
chief and then fire chief until he retired (early '70s).
After that, he taught fire safety/prevention methods at
various fire departments around the state, under a Washington
State Dept. of Education program.
Thanks for the memories! Dad lived here until his death, and
cared greatly for this community. Me, I wandered for 60-some-
odd years before returning!

The third photo (sacy 9-29-48) is the east side of Lewis and
Clark Elementary. Shown are the original brick school (1939-
73) and the slightly newer "L"-shaped wood addition (the
later 4th, 5th and 6th grades), separated by a brick-encased
mobile fire wall.
[Can't blame Sorenson for that one. Don
labeled it with the date. I decided it looked
like Sacy and renamed it!! HA! At the time I
even wondered if it could be L&C, but ya know,
I'm a Spalding kid. Put a note on that picture.
CLICK TO SEE ADDED NOTE TO PAGE. -Maren]
About the time of the photo, part of the west side of the
new extension was gutted by fire. I entered kindergarten in
September of 1949 and recall, near that time, seeing from the
street (Cullum Ave.) west across the playground, that a fire
and stark blackened hole had consumed part of the white
exterior for one or two classrooms. My better guess is that I
was possibly already in school and that the fire must have
been during summer break after the photo was taken (9-29-
1948), within a year or two. More than a pickup-truck
handpump fire!
Maren: I think two earlier Sandstorm entries touched on this
fire and could add something here?

discussion. -Maren]

Re: Jadwin Fire Houses
I maybe missing something here; but as I recall in 1948
Jadwin began at Williams and ran north to Symons. Goethals
began somewhere in the South End and ran to Swift, fronting
the 700 area. It wasn't until the mid '50s that the two were
joined and then sometime later the names got shuffled to what
they are now. As for the location of the fire house, I'm not
really sure, but I think in that time period it was on
Goethals nearer to Swift and close to the Housing Office
before it was relocated to east side of GWWay at the
intersection with Swift.

Fe: Richland Firehouse
The old Richland Fire Station (1943-1944) was most likely
located on the east side of Jadwin, just about one property
south of Swift. In between was the old library building
(originally, this was the Walt Symon's Ford Agency and Johnny
Gerdes Union Station).
In 1966, before my last year at UW, I had a summer job in
that building while it was still standing. Painted yellow by
that time, it housed the new Ben-Franklin Regional Planning
Commission (BFRPC) now the Ben-Franklin Council of
Governments, the Port of Pasco, and (I think) the Girl Scouts
head office. At BFRPC we were a staff of five, including two
summer interns-I was one, and from WSU, also a five-year
architecture undergrad, was Gary TABASINSKI ('62). The other
three were George Plescher (the pipe-smoking and suspendered
director, a degree in horticulture), Tom Pickerel (later
planning director in Ellensburg for Kittitas County), and
Fran Postma (secretary). During the summer we completed a
"regional parks plan" which, among other things, fantasized
the current seven-mile linear park/river trail along the
Richland waterfront. It's amazing what can be done in five
minutes on an official map with a colored pen.
A small common eating niche was shared with the port staff of
two or three. The port secretary was five or six years older
and had been a cheerleader, maybe in Pasco. I recall her
mentioning the astonishing fact that her mouth had produced
seventeen (!) extra teeth while she was growing up, and that
many of them were still crowded in place when she was a
smiley leader of high school cheers, not at all sensitive
about it. Was still laughing. With only one misplaced tooth I
was more self-conscious. Had it pulled later while underway
in the Navy (and deep-sixed it overboard somewhere between
Singapore and Borneo.)
In the early years the building between the fire house and
Swift had been a large, arched-roof hutment garage, later
vacant and run down. I recall as an early grade-schooler
seeing something like circus posters plastered over the
closed garage doors. This was the Walt Symon's Ford Agency
and Johnny Gerdes Union Station (Gibson photo and text).

As I remember Johnny's 76 Station was on the northeast corner
of Williams and Jadwin (southwest corner of the Uptown
parking lot). The area between Swift and Williams from GWWay
and Stevens was a large vacant lot. Sometime between 1954 and
1958 the roadway between Swift (Goethals end) and Williams
(Jadwin end) was completed. At the Swift end of Goethals was
the library, housing office, and the new city hall. Men's
dorms were on the east side of Goethals extending up Swift.
Not too sure when the city fathers decided to change the
street names, but I believe sometime in the '60s or later
that Goethals was moved west and the old part was added to
Jadwin. As I said, in 1948 Goethals ended at Swift and Jadwin
began at Williams.

I appreciated Don Sorenson's (NAB) postings about Kadlec
Hospital. I had a couple of memorable encounters there. (I
took a few days off to go to Payson, AZ for my wife and I to
get out of the house, so I'm way behind in my emails.) In
1953 I was diagnosed with rheumatic fever and spent two weeks
in Kadlec. The main treatments for the disease back then were
absolute bed rest and penicillin. After a week in the
oversized crib bed in the pediatric ward, I was so bored that
the nurse came in and found me running back and forth from
one end of the bed to the other. I was instructed in the
definition of 'absolute bed rest.' One day my mom brought me
a milk shake when she visited. The nurse made a note in my
medical record that I liked milk shakes, and the next
afternoon the nurse brought me a milk shake just before she
went off her shift. When the next nurse began her shift, she
also brought me a milk shake. Since I was underweight until I
got married in 1966, I needed the extra calories. I had
another bout with the disease in 1955.
Then, in 1958, just before I began ninth grade, I woke up
three mornings in a row with an upset stomach. I missed
breakfast, but by noon I felt okay. The third day mom took me
to the ER, partly to prove to me nothing was wrong, partly to
be checked for appendicitis. My father had appendicitis. His
appendix broke in the ambulance on the way to the hospital,
and the ER doctor told mom she should begin planning his
funeral. Fortunately, he survived. The Kadlec ER doctor
examined me for appendicitis, pressing all over my abdomen:
"Does this hurt?" "No." He finally said I didn't have
appendicitis, but he'd do a white blood cell count just to be
certain. Twenty minutes later he came running back into the
exam room and repeated the whole process. "Are you SURE this
doesn't hurt?" "Yes, I'm sure it doesn't hurt." He said I
didn't have appendicitis, but definitely had an infection
somewhere, and fifteen minutes later I was being wheeled into
the OR for exploratory surgery. Dr. Lih, the surgeon, came to
see me later in the recovery room. I actually did have an
infected appendix. It had grown between my vertebrae and my
stomach, and the ER doctor's abdominal exam was just pressing
against my empty stomach. The appendix was so swollen that
the surgery took twice as long as a normal appendectomy
because he had to be careful not to break it open removing
it. So the ER doctor and Dr. Lih saved my life. I mentioned
to Dr. Lih's daughter, Nora ('62), when I had a date with her
to a football game several years later, that I owed my life
to her father.
I was saddened to read of Myrna BOLIN's passing. She was
class of '63, so I didn't know her in person, but we did
exchange several emails over the years.
And I missed wishing my best male friend, Ed Wood, a happy
birthday a few days ago. I never found as good a friend in my
adult years as Ed. We were members of the Carmichael Science
Club and Amateur Radio Club, and Ed helped me get my general
ham radio license. Hope you had a good day, Ed, and many more
to follow.

I saw your post in the Sandstorm and your name brought back
some fond memories when I lived in Richland many years ago.
I'm assuming you are related to Richard BRODACZYNSKI ('56-RIP),
or as I used to call him "Brodi". We were good friends in
grade school and we used to climb trees bordering the school
yard among other things. I remember going to his house and
having peanut butter sandwiches for lunch. I happen to look
at a picture of the last high school reunion and he was
standing right behind me and I didn't know it and I'm sure he
never would have recognized me. I missed an opportunity to
say hello and sort of reconnect memories. I saw he had passed

Re: 1953 Richland Map - Goethals
http://alumnisandstorm.com/Xtra/Cad/180826-53RichlandMap.jpg
It's easy to see where some confusion comes in on this. I've
posted a map of Richland from the 1953 phone book. There were
some really weird street name changes between then and now.
For example, in 1953, Goethals ran between Casey and Bernard
[starting at Abbott] in South Richland, bending around
Lewis and Clark then angling off to the West a little. Part
of that route is now labeled Jadwin.
[WHY? Does anybody know WHY??? -Maren]
In the 1953 map, Duane ran from the south [Bypass Hwy] to
Lee. Now Duane is Goethals.
[WHY did they do that? What was wrong with
Duane the way it was? -Maren]
That one threw me a little. One time I was looking to verify
the address of a particular individual. I knew which house on
Goethals it was but wanted to see that he lived there in the
mid-1950s. When I found his name in the 1953 phone book, it
showed Duane not Goethals. I began to doubt my memory. But
then I looked at the map in the front of the phone book and
noticed the name change. It was a relief to know I had it
right.
On the 1953 map, Goethals merged with Stevens near Chief Jo.
Currently, Goethals stubs off just before Chief Jo.
There are a number of other changes from the 1953 map.
[in 1953 ALL the north-south streets in the
south end are avenues except for Goethals
and GWWay. Those two streets also are the only
two streets that head north out of the south
end... All the avenues stay in the south end.
And Goethals wasn't in the alpha order of the
avenues: Abert, Armistead, Adkins, Barth,
Bernard, Casey, Craighill, Cullum, Delafield,
Douglas, Duane... and there stuck in the
middle of all those alpha avenues was
Goethals DRIVE between Bernard and Casey. So
why change it and delete Duane completely?
Makes no sense to me. -Maren]

Great to know, I'm glad you saw your mother in one of the
photos. Its what I hope when I submit them. I wonder if any
of those art pieces survived over decades. You never know.
To: David DOUGLAS ('62)
Wow I guess that's why they call it practicing medicine. So
my story about Kadlec, a couple years ago I went to an estate
sale in West Richland the home was part of Kadlec to be
precise the maternity ward. The story I get from those who
were doing the estate tell me they bought that section for 5
bucks and had to pay to move it. Not quite sure if that's
completely true but who am I to say differently. Right next
to the home is another section I believe to be the records
section and more rooms. Since I'm always looking for cool
things to put in my garage I look up and see there are three
original lights with the globes. I bought those for 10
bucks for all, just had to get them down myself. From the
"records" room I removed 5 or 6 of the brass label holders
(can't remember the official name). They cleaned up nice, I
used them as frames to put pictures of my '61 Buick. my
3rd one since High School. Oh my wife's grandmother, Elva
Brinkerhoff worked in Kadlec's nursery in the '50s. The story
goes Elva met a lady who was there after she delivered twin
boys and they were comparing notes on their older children.
Anyway to the point its how Reed Brinkerhoff, ('52) met
Doreen Mathews, the rest is history. Funny how things
intersect. Oh by the by those lights are working in my garage.
To: Pete BEAULIEU ('62)
Yes that's the front of Desert Inn, cept I think they still
called it Transient Quarters. Gary TABASINSKI ('62) I think
his dad worked in the 234-5 Building when they were making
weapons parts.
Wasn't the Library somewhere on that same block as Johnny'S?.
I didn't connect the possibility of that 76 related to the
one on uptown property. Thanks for that info, I'll have to
let the current user of that building.
[The Ford building became the first library. -Maren]
To: Dick WIGHT ('52)
That's cool you found your dad in couple of the pictures. By
the by did he ever tell you a story about a fire that made
one of the fireman sick from the burnt perfume? I'll have to
ask Randy to retell that story. Does anyone remember the '50s
Richland arsonist?, the FBI was involved. And your welcome
its why I do it.

Re: The Eternal Flame
Monday, November 25, 1963 I, as did a lot of other Bombers
I'm sure, watched on live TV Jackie Kennedy light the Eternal
Flame at the grave of John F. Kennedy. I think at the time I
wondered where that idea came from. Only recently did I find
out.
In 1961 President & Mrs Kennedy made a trip to France. Jackie
spoke fluent French and made a huge hit with the French
people, which caused JFK to say, "I am the man who accompanied
Jacqueline Kennedy to Paris," On May 31, 1961 Kennedy visited
the grave of the French Unknown Soldier under the Arc de
Triomphe (Arch of Triumph), where he lit the eternal flame
that is part of their memorial and laid a wreath. The French
eternal flame is lit at 6:30 p.m. every day instead left
burning of 24 hours a day like ours. Jackie Kennedy remembered
and wanted it done at President Kennedy's grave. I understand
there was some resistance but she insisted on it.

Seven years ago a new burner was installed because the old one
was not working properly. It might be technically superior but
it is above the round stone. Some people don't like it and I
think I agree, it looked better if you didn't actually see the
burner itself.

A quick note to let you all know that the Apple Cup was
cancelled yesterday. Apparently the Cougs couldn't field
enough scholarship players.
And for politically correct reasons the game between the
Beavs and Ducks is no longer called "The Civil War". I'm not
too sure about the logic of this one.
[For the record, Bob, I KNEW THAT. -Maren]

"Dr. Seuss" is one of the most mispronounced of all writers'
names. It actually rhymes with 'voice', so it's pronounced
'Zoyce'.

Re: Memories of the original Kadlec Hospital
http://alumnisandstorm.com/Xtra/Soe/201128_Karl_Kadlec.jpg
The recent posts about the original Kadlec Hospital triggered
some memories. I was born in Kadlec in April, 1950. I
obviously have no memory of that event, but six years later I
was diagnosed with legg-Perthes. This is a disorder initiated
by a disruption of blood flow to the head of the femur. If
it's not caught early, the bone dies and stops growing. My
parents noticed I was limping, but being 6 years old, there
was no way I'd admit to anything that would lead to a doctor's
office.
Once the diagnosis was confirmed, I was admitted to Kadlec.
The treatment was 30+ days in bed, with suspended weights
attached to my legs. This was to take the pressure off the hip
joints and give the veins a chance to grow. Other than being
restricted to the bed, it was totally painless. The best part
for me was that I was in the hospital over Christmas, and
spoiled beyond belief by the nurses and staff.
Once released, I was fitted with a leg brace on my right leg
and a corresponding built up shoe on my left foot. After 12
long months, the hip joints were back to normal, and the brace
and shoe were history.
[See that CRIB in the background? I was in
THIRD GRADE and they put me in one of those BABY
CRIBS. I was a big girl and I was so insulted
when they put me in a CRIB!!. -Maren]

This time of year produces some great sunrises and Hanford has
some of the coolest I've seen. When I take the opportunity at
work to watch the sun come up, I'm never disappointed, This
image is exceptional. Take a close look you will see another
"scene" subtly buried in the sun ray soaked clouds. Look
closely... I think what you will see is quite unique. You'll
have to overlook the goofy conex boxes.

Maren, am thinking a lot of us had be in those cribs
I was in one when I was 9 and had my tonsils removed (was at
Our Lady of Lourdes in Pasco)... I hated it and will admit I
cried, when they first put me in there... it scared me to be
closed in like that (maybe that's where my claustrophobia
started???).
[I was 9 and was highly insulted. About the
only anesthetic back then was ether. Starter
fluid either IS or smells like ether. -Maren]

Geez, buddy... don't know how it happened, but I missed
your birthday. First time in a very, very long time, you
know--but then, you were always better at that kind of thing
than the rest of us, anyway.
I hope the friendly spirit and intent of these words
somehow find their way to you, David, and that maybe you have
some equivalent of a smile in response. I hope so. Even call
it a prayer if you like, and I won't hold it against you. We
can settle up later somewhere down the road. I love you, dear
friend. Now and always.

Re: Oregon State - Oregon Civil War
In response to Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) entry
referring to the decision to no longer refer to the Oregon-
Oregon State football game as the Civil War: You point out the
change was driven by political correctness. As a big college
football fan (UW Huskies) I have followed closely PAC - 12,
especially our northwest teams. I actually heard almost
nothing about the change until it happened. The change was
made some time ago. I have been to games in both stadiums and
have many friends who are fans/alums of both. Over the years
I heard and read plenty about the teams, the games and the
rivalry, but NEVER about the origin of "The Civil War" name.
Apparently the game, played 120 times for decades, was known
as "The Oregon Classic". In the 1930s the OSU head coach
used the term civil war and it stuck. Earlier this year both
schools (agreeing parties incl. staff, players, fans) mutually
decided that that title would no longer be used for the annual
game. How much it was driven by political correctness is
always open for interpretation. All we know is that this was
not the result of any lawsuits, loud protests or any other
extreme action, political or otherwise.
I am sure all football fans are aware the annual really big
Oklahoma-Texas game was for many years known as the "Red River
Shootout". The Red River is a boundary between the two states.
Over many years this game was known as the Red River Rivalry,
CLassic, etc. In 2005 the game went from Shootout to Rivalry,
in 2014 it became the Red River Showdown. Guess what? Both
changes were driven by the desires of the corporate sponsors.
Political correctness? Not sure either of those states were
driven by that. However they MIGHT have been driven by the
$MILLIONS of dollars paid to the programs each year.
Many changes of all kinds are labeled as driven by political
correctness. I usually view them evolutionary, driven more by
common sense. So there you are , MUCH more than you needed to
know about any of this.
Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy
Kwanzaa. Happy Hanukkha and so on...

Gotta say that Huskies - Utes game last night (28th) was a
duzzie; almost gave up on the Dawgs after the first half. But
they did storm back in the second half and take the game.
Nearly as exciting as the Beavs win over the Ducks the night
before.

Maren, you mentioned ether as being the anesthetic that was
used when we were kids... it was horrible and made me so
sick. I can still see that mesh covering being put over my
nose/mouth and hear the anesthetist counting as he dripped
that evil concoction onto my face!
When my brother, Tim ('71wb-RIP) had his tonsils out when he
was two years old ('55)... he was given sodium pentathol, no
side effects from it all.
I thought ether was a thing of the past, but, when my
daughters had their tonsils removed (they both were in the
hospital at the same time) in 1975, they were given ether...
same reactions to it as I had! Wonder if it's still used?????
[I don't know, but it needs to be outlawed.
I remember puking at a SIP of water. -Maren]

Re: Hospital bed vs crib
I had my appendix out when I wasn't quite 10 at Kennewick
General Hospital. I don't recall being put in a crib but a
regular bed. It was quite high up, I imagine so the nurses
didn't have to stoop down to do their thing. A couple of
nights later I just happened to wake up from a bad dream about
the time the nurse was making her rounds. She said "Can't you
sleep?" and I told her I'd had a bad dream and was going back
to sleep but she came back with a shot to "help" me fall back
asleep.
