Re: COVID causes changes to 2021 race
Bib numbers already assigned by random computer instead of a
drawing at the cancelled traditional Mushers' Banquet the
Thursday night before the start.
There is no Saturday Ceremonial Start in Anchorage this year.
Sunday, 3/7/21 - 1:30 (AK Time)) Start from Deshka Landing
Race route is weird. It follows the traditional odd-year
"southern route" to Iditarod, AK (halfway). Then the race
route goes about 10 miles SE to abandoned gold mine town of
Flat, AK (not a check point) -- called the Gold Trail Loup --
and comes back to Iditarod. Then teams do the reverse trail
back to Deshka Landing.
There are still three mandatory layovers.
24 hour layover must be taken before going to Flat, AK. 8
hour layover between Rohn (going) and Rohn (coming back) 8
hour layover in Skwentna (67 miles to finish at Deshka
Landing). This is the layover normally taken at White
Mountain (55 miles from Nome finish)

To: All Bombers
1952 additional housing projects in Richland. The need, a
number of new production buildings were completed to increase
plutonium production several fold. Upgrades to the 313
building to provide more slugs for C, H and DR Reactors that
came online. REDOX canyon building to handle the additional
irradiated fuel and recover the Uranium to be reused. This
would allow less waste sent to tank farms where additional
tanks were constructed. The crown jewel was 234-5Z, the
final plutonium stop. State of the art process designed to
significantly reduce plutonium exposure to the worker and
the environment. Also under construction K Reactors, a new
facility,2101-M, for graphite machining for those piles.
Ground clearing for PUREX, one of my old haunts, was also
underway. Heady times for Hanford playing an important Cold
War role.

Re: 1950 Version of an E-Mail
Most Sandstorm entries come from people who graduated in the
1950s and 1960s--these graduates were all shaped by the
1950s--a time when Americans basked in the confidence that
they had won the great war. The American industrial giant
switched to consumer goods, the technical prowess that
produced the winning machines produced the greatest increases
in wealth, health, and prosperity in the history of the
world. Some would argue that the 1950s were the best years
ever, the best of their lives.
This link (https://memorywebs.org/1950s_email.htm) flashes
back to the fifties with a poem and pictures recalling those
days that we now enjoy filtering through our Green & Gold
tinted glasses. Nostalgia, reminisces, regrets over lost
innocence.

While we're talking about this location, does anyone else
remember the little merry-go-round behind Tastee Freeze? I
don't know if it ran more than one summer. I think Mr.
Brinkerhoff (of bluebird fame) ran it. I can distinctly
remember riding it, and I was not of school age, yet.
[I remember it too well. There was
also an "airplane"... there must have
been 4 or 5 "planes" each hanging from
a cable... Once seated in the "plane" they
would start spinning the "planes" around
and around in a circle. They stopped the
ride so I could get out and puke. I think
I was only 5 or 6 years old. This is SORTA
what I remember... not sure about the wheels.

Re: Col. Matthias article

To: Patti McLAUGHLIN ('65)
Interesting question why isn't there something recognizable
for Colonel Matthias? As many Bombers know in 2013 a bust of
Franklin T. was installed on library property at the corner
of Swift and Northgate with much fanfare and a speech by his
son Michael recalling his dad's ability to catch fish in the
most unlikely of places. Karen Miles put in a lot of effort
to accomplish that. She felt strongly something had to be
done to recognize his tremendous effort. So much behind that
story let me tell you. Around the time of Hanford's 50th
I tried to get the Federal Building named after him, I
contacted a number of former Manhattan Project workers,
community leaders, a Congressman and a Senator I couldn't get
traction to move forward. So forward to this century, with
what I've learned about him talking to his son over the past
few years he was not a fan of recognition. He just wanted
to do his job the best way he knew how and get others to go
above their talents. So while it's my humble opinion doing
more than what has already been accomplished, Franklin would
find it unnecessary. Besides, all Bombers have to do is look
around the community then further north they'll see something
bigger than anything else that can be done in his name.

The first picture is also looking north. Farthest to the
north, and across the Columbia River, is the unmistakable
downstream edge of the White Bluffs formation. Helping to
orient this photo, I propose, is the extreme lower left edge
where I think we see a "Q" house. Might the northbound S-
shaped roadway be Jadwin, then, heading toward what is now
the junction with SR-240 northbound across the Reservation to
the Vernita bridge?
["Q" house is on the SW corner of the
Jadwin/Wilson intersection, right? - Maren]
The Second picture, looking north, is the southwest corner of
Richland, between the north-bound By-Pass Highway on the west
and north-bound Thayer Drive to the east. The bordering and
hook-shaped east-west road in the near ground is Duportail.
Marcus Whitman Elementary School is in the upper-right
quadrant. In the far background center is the Richland
Airport.

about the 1500 block of Thayer in the
upper/right corner of the picture. -Maren]

The first one, of the apartments construction is on Jadwin.
Across the street to the left, just out of the picture would
be Chief Joe.
{Is this "the stilts" apartments? -Maren]
The second one is southwest Richland. The curving road from
the bottom, going left and up is Cottonwood; the winding road
from the right going toward the top is Wright and the road
curving around the top of the new construction is Duportail
which hooked up to Cottonwood. Marcus Whitman is toward the
upper right and just out of the picture to its right is
Carmichael.
[So these are gonna be the Bauer Day houses? -Maren]

Yes, I remember those rides by Tastee Freez (and, I think the
spelling is without an "e" on Freeze). Weren't they across
the street from Tastee Freez, or were there rides later on?
I remember taking my girlfriend in junior high there and
riding some of those twirling tea cups. As we were spinning
around and around, I farted. Then every time the ride stopped
to let riders off, the aroma rose up in the teacup. I stayed
red for a month. Beth never said a word.

Re: Bill SCOTT's ('64) novel
'Reach for the Sky' by James Scott gave me everything I
appreciate in a novel of historical fiction, including new
information, many-faceted characters, and an intricate plot.
Learning new information without feeling bogged down was a
pleasure. The author described the complex and fascinating
history of aviation. I now give the utmost respect to the
checklist a pilot and co-pilot must complete in order to fly
safely. I know more about the types of planes needed to carry
mail, freight, troops and bombs. Being a "barnstormer" is
more than a colorful expression. In this story I saw it as a
life-and-death event.
James Scott's main characters are fascinating. Shannon
Donnelly is another of Scott's women who overcome great odds
to achieve success. She makes many mistakes but tends to hurt
only the people who make others their victims rather than
causing grief to the "good guys" and the innocent ones. Her
two love interests are told in no uncertain terms that her
main love is flying, and they will always be second. How this
conviction works out is held until the end of the book.
Racial inequality is as hurtful today as it was in World War
II, the time period of Scott's novel. Shannon Donnelly's best
friend, a black girl, is the top pilot in her class, but she
is discriminated against by nearly everyone. Those who treat
her as an equal, including Shannon's adopted family, are
elevated characters.
I give 'Reach for the Sky' five stars, and I hope you will
enjoy it as much as I have.

Going to the movies and listening to music
...chatted with a former neighbor the other day...Connie
LOFT ('59). It was one of those bitter sweet chats with
someone you haven't been in contact with for many years...62
or so. We had remembered our Moms putting out fresh laundry
to dry...and then standing by the back fence to chat and
drink coffee. She (Connie) was the baby of their family...or
so I think. Both Connie's Dad (Jim) & Mom (Mrs) didn't like
to burn coal because of the oil film that would develop on
the house walls. They instead burned wood. Each Spring,
during 'flooding' season, on the Columbia, Jim would spend
weeks gathering driftwood...and then spend the rest of the
year sawing it up with a crosscut saw...It became a hobby for
him and great exercise....Back to the phone call...I had
specifically called Connie to find out the name of one of The
Big Sky Singers from the University Montana....she had dated
him...namely David STILES ('59-RIP). Aside from seeing every
movie that had been played at the Uptown Theater she was able
to listen to him sing. The Big Sky Singers recorded one
record album on the DOT label. This is my favorite song off
that record...'The Ballad of Sidney Kleenex"...Enjoy!

to accomplish the task at hand. Machine shops, Uranium fuel
fabrication, laboratories (222-S), Patrol, mail couriers,
payroll services, master craftsmen, power operators (keeping
the steam & water going) and special projects for other
sites. 222-S laboratory is still in operation patrol is
lurking around the corner doing their best, craftsmen and
craftswomen are smaller in numbers with even less room to

Re: Put a Tiger in Your Tank
Remember the old Esso (now Exxon) commercial "Put a tiger in
your tank!" shown on TV quite often in 1964. It was my first
quarter at CBC and someone asked me to drive him to a drug
store in Pasco to buy notebooks or some sort of school
supplies. Not sure but it may have been Benny REPPOND ('64).
We got into the car and backing out I started laughing. The
car to the right of me had a tiger tail sticking out of the
gas tank. When we got to the drug store they had a display
table, I guess at least three by three feet and in the form
of a basket just full of tiger tails. I had to buy one!!! The
tiger tail was held in place by the closed gas tank door but
there was a ribbon that you could tie some place inside to
prevent loss. When I parked the car I would open the gas tank
door and push it inside to keep someone from stealing it.
Later on when I had the '57 Olds convertible I thought the
car would be the right age for the tiger tail. I sometimes
used it at car shows. The Oldsmobile had a hidden gas tank
door which was a chrome plated piece between the tail light
and backup light you pulled up to get to the tank. Some other
car guys suggested people might not know what it was supposed
to be, but if I put it on the license plate they would know
because in those days a lot of cars had the gas tank filler
behind the license plate. I never did that but the first time
I used it was in a parade and I put it in the proper place. The
next day someone I knew, not a car collector, said he saw it
and knew exactly what it was. I decided a wire held it
better, or was easier to tie to the gas fill tube so I tied
the ribbon to a wire, but the ribbon was getting kinda
ragged. Then one day at cruise night Ruff's drive in on
Clearwater in Kennewick I found it laying on the fender. I
guess someone opened the gas door to get a look at the whole
tiger and it finally broke. Never did fix it although it
would be easy to do. I ran across it the other day and while
I have no pictures of it in the Olds, I went out and put it
on my current regular car. In the 1980s they were making them
again, but I did not like them because they were two or three
times as long as mine and they were straight, while my
original is curved.

They're off! The race is on!!!
They departed Seshka Landing (near Willow, AK) every two
minutes like normal. First stop is Skwentna (instead of
Yentna).
47 teams... I'm watching 10. If anybody wants me to watch a
team, let me know..
GPS observations.
Richie Diel (Bib #6) was in the lead for several miles but is
currently resting... and Ryan Redington (Bib #20) has passed
him and is in the lead out of Skwentna... and resting
I watched first #4 Kristy Berington stop to rest and soon #13
Anna Berington, caught up with her twin and both teams are
resting... So they're now traveling together again.
Nic Petit (Bib #10) is moving up slowly and is in 2nd place
Ramey Smyth (Bib #9) is out of Skwentna.
IN the checkpoint now are both Martin Buser (Bib #34) and
Dallas Seveey (Bib #23)
GPS doesn't quite seem to be operating right... suspect all
kinks will get ironed out soon...
Official Current Race Standings indicate there are 17 teams
that are in to Skwentna and 4 of those have departed Skwentna.
OUT OF SKWENTNA N - 40 miles to FINGER LAKE N
1. Ryan Redington/Bib#20
2. Nic Petit/Bib#10
3. Ramey Smyth/Bib#9
4. Matt Hall/Bib#17

Re: 2021 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race

Pretty fast race so far...
All teams seem to be moving along well. Great weather. No
snow. Colder at night the way the dogs like it. Sun shining
during the day. MANY teams rest during the day and let the
sun shine down and warm up those muscles.
46 teams remain -- one scratched...
Teams depart the start at two minute intervals. The
difference between first and last to depart is made up at the
end of each mandatory 24 hour lay over. Last team to leave
takes exactly 24 hours... 2nd to last team departing takes 24
hours PLUS TWO MINUTES lay over... and so on... and so on...
first team to depart takes 24 hours PLUS 47 x two minutes
layover.
After the mandatory 24 hour layover is when we'll REALLY get
a better idea of whivh team is leading.

While Maren and others are freezing their buns off in Alaska,
[FYI, I'm NOT in Alaska... I'm in New Orleans...
and NOT freezing anything off... -Maren]
my wife and I yesterday visited a tourist site here in
Saipan. Kalabera Cave (photo attached) is a 100 foot downward
spiraling cave that can only be explored with rappelling
gear. So many of the old tourist sites have their history in
WWII, but Kalabera has a chronology that predates the war.
The area near Kalabera was a sugarcane plantation during
Japanese pre-war years. It is referenced in Spanish period
documents wherein the last battle between the Chamorro of
Saipan and the Spanish administration took place. Ferdinand
Magellan landed in 1521. An ethnographic reference was noted
about the site during the German period (1899-1914) when then
Administrator George Fritz visited the cave and recorded some
of the images. It was later visited, during the early
Japanese occupation, by Haruji Matsue, who later became known
as the Sugar King of NKK (Nan'yo Komatsu Kaisha Development
Company). At about the same time, it was visited by Hans
Hornbostel, who collected artifacts for the Bishop Museum in
Honolulu.
20 years ago, a manager of mine created an association of
cave explorers to preserve and collect artifacts for the
office of Historic Preservation here on Saipan.
http://alumnisandstorm.com/Xtra/Pie/210309_Kalabera_Cave.jpg
The next photo shows replicas of ancient Chamorro dwellings.
The "latte stones" were stone braces for the construction of
houses made of logs and ropes made from trees native to the
islands.
http://alumnisandstorm.com/Xtra/Pie/210309_Chamorro.jpg
We went to join my wife's brother, Frank Aldan, and another
two friends, Norman Tenorio and Mariano Taitano for a feast
at Kalabera Cave. The three gentlemen "adopted" the Kalabera
Cave tourist site to keep it clean and accessible for
tourists and islanders under a tourism beautification
campaign.
There's not a lot of difference between us and them when it
comes to the pride of our home birthplaces.

Well, I went over the top the other day with my political

No dis. Maren ('64) has kept me out of trouble too many
times to count in the AS - *checks in the mail, Maren (cash,

Now, getting back to my original edited and deleted post
(revised, seriously revised), March 6, 2021. I love the Bee
Gee's. My wife hated them. So goes marriages. Occasionally
our baby girl would awake in the middle of the night crying.
Yes, one of those.
All miserable day long the wife had been taking care of our
baby daughter and me ...hey, married, disabled Vietnam Vet
...and now just one of the kids. Feed me. Nevertheless,
pretending I was not totally useless, I would get up in the
very late of night/morning. Go get the light of my life out
of her torture chamber, A.K.A. the crib. And we would remove
to the living room rocking chair.
I would drop the needle on the vinyl in the quiet of the
night with the Bee Gees and the baby and I would rock to the
rhythm we are supposed to use during CPR, or is that the
Chamber Brothers ...and Heather would fade away.
On March 6, 2021 she turned 51. The same day former U.S.
Representative TN David Stern "Davy" Crockett and other
notables of our history died at the Alamo.
The Mexican soldier, Pena, stated the captured Crockett died
stoically and without statement.
I just needed to say a belated, Remember The Alamo. And a
Happy Birthday to the kid.
Re: Other matters
I have been stuck in my apartment now for one year; March 16,
2020. All the while being incarcerated for a year in a three
room prison, not including the head, where I try not to cut
my throat with a safety razor while shaving, cooking my own
meals, avoiding any contact with my iRobot Roomba that I have
renamed Linda after my former housekeeper whose starving
these days somewhere about five miles southeast of my apt
while my new Linda 2 (Roomba) learns the small square footage
of my one bedroom abode
I finally had a melt down. Can you tell? PTSD which I
severely suffer with but have never admitted to the Veterans
Administration out of fear ...no shrinks ...no meds ...the
Feds taking away my assault weapons with the 30 round
magazines which only hold four rounds because there isn't any
ammo. Anyone know where I can buy ammo in CA? I deer hunt.
Curd ('67) found me an apt in Richland. Seriously. A few days
ago. A really really nice apt. The new ones off GW Way and
Lee. State of the art. I put my $600 down on a first floor,
one bedroom, overlooking the pool and was just beginning to
get that sewed up... finally going to escape the misery of
Huntington Beach, CA. And this morning Fred 'Dinky' "Dink'
Morse ('63) ...I have known Fred since I was 11 years old and
have never called him Dink. His wisdom shines at times, even
after suffering a couple concussions off Carmichael Hill
episodes in his youth, visions way beyond my own of what I am
thinking or what I should actually be pursuing.
Fred sends me a prophetic text. "What are you going to do,
come here and stare at the Columbia River?"
I called this morning (yesterday) and said to the rental
agency 'no can do'. I am again a prisoner of HB. Sad day.

Years ago I inherited a number of photos from Homer Moulthrop
before he passed. Homer was very involved in coming up with
new ways to protect workers from Plutonium contamination.
These photos are from PUREX in a section called L Cell where
Plutonium was loaded out then shipped to other Hanford
buildings and other A E C sites. I worked in the PUREX Lab
from May of '83 to May '86. In 1986 Chernobyl happened,
increased pressure from anti nuclear groups proclaiming N
Reactors graphite core was just as dangerous. We marched on
for another year or so upgrading N to no avail. It was shut
down permenately. Admiral Watkins declared we are awash in
Plutonium. Those 4 or so years, in my estimation, was the
"highest" Hanford would be. While I only speak for myself I
loved the job. I still do but its not quite the same. Anyway
enjoy the photos.

Re: Closest Finish - 1978 Race.
For 800 miles, Dick Mackey (Bib #13) and Rick Swenson (Bib #
16) rarely lost sight of each other. With a few others, they
jockeyed for position along the length of Alaska. At the end,
they found themselves out in front of everyone else and
proceeded to stage the most spectacular finish the race has
ever seen.
"By the time the two men reached the streets of Nome, they
were virtually running side by side," Daily News reporter
Doug O'Harra wrote. "One hundred yards out, they were even.
By the time they entered the 50-yard chute, Mackey had a
slight edge. Both men were running.
"Then Mackey's dogs trotted under the burled arch, the finish
line." The dogs tangled. "His sled stopped just short of the
finish line. Mackey collapsed.
"Swenson ... kept going and dragged his sled under the finish
line. Though his leaders crossed second, Swenson himself
crossed under the arch ahead of Mackey.
"Bedlam erupted."
The decision about who won the 1978 Iditarod is debated today
whenever race fans gather. But the rules and race officials
said it was the lead dog's nose, not the musher's behind,
that determined the winner. They awarded Mackey the victory
by one second.

The video of Columbia camp brought back many memories for me.
My brother-in-law was a guard out at Columbia camp and my
sister and my nephew lived in one of the prefabs. If you look
at the pictures they lived in I think the third prefab from
the far end you can see a dark row of buildings... those were
car garages. The Soccer field he mentioned we used to go
there and play and the guards would be out there with fire
hoses watering the lawn and would shoot us with the fire
hoses and roll us along the grass it was a blast. One thing
he didn't mention was the fact that there was a large
raspberry field to the left of the prefabs and one day my
nephew and I decided we would try and eat the raspberries
needless to say I have never eaten a raspberry since. Also
we were not allowed to go near the river but we would sneak
there once in a while. I spent summers there as my mother was
working and my sister took care of me. I was 6 & 7 those two
summers.

Lou Turner Manhattan Project worker from the Chicago Met Lab
prior to coming to Hanford. Lou was a radiation safety
officer in Chicago exactly which building he never said but
one story he related to me. Paraphrasing him "I remember
someone going past me with a glass flask sending the needle
on my meter swing pretty fast. I told him do you know how hot
that is? He replied ya I know but at least I'm not being shot
at!". Interesting take, but appropriate for the time I
believe. What's interesting is I heard a very similar
statement from Milt Rasmussen who also worked in Chicago. One
of Milt's best experiences were long discussions with Enrico
Fermi who he found to be very down to earth. Is it possible
Milt was the one responding to Lou? Anyway back to Lou, he
worked in the 100 Areas for the first few years and studied
fuel anomalies in the basins. Given the slugs extremely
radioactive nature outside the box thinking for inspection
tools were key to understanding effects of pile activity.
Attached are photos a tool designed to use under many feet of
water and a KEPR interview with Lou about what looks like a
Life magazine article.
As the reactors power levels rose those early examination
efforts were woefully inadequate so the 327 Building was
built specifically to increase knowledge of fuel failures
with more "intimate" inspection.

Most teams have taken their mandatory 24 hour rest. MANY have
taken their mandatory 8 hour rest.
Commentators say that right now the team to beat is 4 time
winner Dallas Seavey... Rick Swenson (with 5 wins) has been
called "the winningest musher" since 1991. It looks like
Dallas will match Rick's record.

Re: Birthday
Today, the 14th of March, is my wife Edna's birthday. She
would have been 85, and she has been gone now for 9 months.
March brings a lot of birthdays to my mind... my Dad, on the
7th, would have been 113. Still he had quite a life and lived
to 101. Brother Tom would be 87 on the 24th, but he has been
gone for 7 years, which is very hard to believe. Son Steve's
special day will be the 19th, and he is enjoying life at 59,
and along with his siblings, keeping me on the straight and
narrow. Still, because of Edna it is a tough month.
I know life has a start and an end date, one happy and the
other, not so much, and that end date moves us into something
and somewhere else, at least Edna really believed that to be
true. I'm not so sure that is a fact, but even if that is
true, the loss here is still very profound.
It's better!! But not great... The Kids and Grandkids drop by
some, and we cook, talk, walk, do some things together, and
that does help a lot. They miss her too, and sometimes I
forget that, but basically I'm by myself most of the time.
So, life goes on and it is better... but not great, yet. I
cry some... I miss the companionship, the ease of being
around her, the conversations... the travel, the dinners
together, someone to discuss the day with... the hugs, the
holding hands. the kisses, the love.
I do not miss the indignities she had to go through the last
year, most of them reducing me to tears... not her though. I
promised her I would always care for her, but in the end, I
couldn't do that. We moved her into a care facility, where,
after 5 days, she passed.
So, I have promised myself I will continue to get better and
continue to embrace each day in a positive way, and to spend
more time embracing those who are near and dear to me.
Please dear God, let me, at least, keep this promise.

Re: Rebecca Armstrong Fugate
The days are getting longer. The sun is shining and there is
a deep loss in the homes of Bombers. Saturday night Rebecca
Armstrong Fugate, the daughter of Linda WERSEN Hoffman ('66)
and Jim 'Pitt's ARMSTRONG ('63) died in Chehalis, WA. Rebecca
was 46 years old and had suffered from scleroderma for the
past 5 years. Scleroderma is a disease with no cure. She has
3 brothers and twin sister Maggee. Maggee is a registered
nurse and coordinated Rebecca's care.
Rebecca is niece to Larry WERSEN ('63), Kathy WERSEN Alder
('64-RIP) and namesake Becky WERSEN Fletcher ('65). Rebecca
was a rock, posting Facebook videos from her hospital beds
sharing her journey. The videos were candid and so important
to her friends and family as we could mostly not visit her
in person. Rebecca had not eaten regular food in 5 years,
obtaining her nutrition through TPN (tube feeding directly
into her stomach). This year she was placed on kidney
dialysis. Up to the end she drove herself to the dialysis
appointments, requiring assistance to climb the few steps
into the clinic.
Becky and I celebrated our 50th anniversary in 2016 and
Rebecca could not attend. She and the family were in the
Tri-Cities for a softball tournament. The morning of the
celebration Rebecca sent us a long loving tribute via text.
The party was at our church and we were blessed at the
evening Mass, with family in attendance. We were so moved by
the text message that we shared it with our priest. At the
Mass he put aside his prepared homily and read Rebecca's
message to the congregation. We were so honored and doubly
blessed.
Jason and Rebecca have been married for 25 years. She and
Jason's children are dedicated athletes. Gavin is a headline
grabbing star junior quarterback at W.F. West High in
Chehalis. Ava starred in softball and is attending Colorado
Mesa University on an athletic scholarship.
The days are getting longer. The crocuses have bloomed gold
on green awash in Bomber tears. The sun is shining.
If you wish to reach out to Linda or Jim, please e-mail me
and I will forward contact information to you.

Re: 2015 Highlight
Lance Mackey arrived with two dog teams at Koyuk checkpoint
on 19 March during Iditarod 2015. The team in front is Scott
Janssen's team, which Lance found bundled up together on the
ice ... where Scott had had to leave them when he was rescued
by snow machine in critical condition. He and his dogs were
buried huddled together underneath snow drifts, after
surviving a fierce ground blizzard and brutal cold condtions.
Locals from the village were on their way to fetch the team
when Lance found them, searched desperately for Scott but
couldn't find him and so attached the Janssen team to the
front of his own team using a snow hook, and brought them to
shelter in Koyuk.
This was an epic moment in the 2015 race. Lance had a tough
2015 race himself and by doing this showed that he is a hero
with absolute love for his own dogs and such concern for
other mushers' teams too.

Re: today
Barring any unforseen circumstances, Dallas Seavey will win
the 2021 Iditarod. That will tie Rich Swenson's record of 5
wins set in 1991.
We should have a winner by 2am or 3am (Alaska Daylight Time).
The live camera is already set and I'm ready to watch...
Dallas is currently moving at 8.5 mph... in 2nd place is
Aaron Burmeister travelling at 6 mph... in 3rd plae is
Brent Sass moving at 6.7 mph. Those positions are unlikely to
change. After third place, it's kind of a toss up. LOTS of
teams trying to finish in the money (Top 20).

Years ago my dad, Leo Pierce, shared a hunting trip story he
and Russ Thorson went on together up into British Columbia
for mountain goats.
When they arrived at their cabin they found it infested with
hungry mice. He said they put their heads together and
invented this ingenious mouse-killing machine. An old
galvanized bucket was it's beginning, wire wrapped around the
bucket's handle, peanut butter for bait, and a ladder to
climb up on. The mice hopped up on the pop can to eat the
treat, making the can spin, and into a watery grave they
went. They both awoke in the morning, and congratulated one
another on their achievement!
Last night I found an ad on Amazon.com for the exact thing
dad and Russ invented, sixty-one years earlier!

My understanding is that the Washington State legislature

prefer PDT over Pacific Standard Time. If the US Congress

Re: Time changes
As my oft confused memory would have it; some time in the
distant past the congers decided we (the nation) should have
a "Uniform Time Act" which established "Daylight" time. There
was a loop hole which allowed individual states to remain on
Standard time, which Arizona did. There was also a provision
which allowed the individual states to remain on "Daylight"
time, provided adjacent states did the same. This proviso
would require the blessing of the congers. Now Washington,
Oregon and Confusion (Calif.) have passed such legislation,
but have yet to hear from the high and mighty in D.C.
Re: As and addendum
There are some scallywags in the congers claiming to put up
legislation doing away with standard time. I think these same
scallywags have been doing this before and never getting any
where with the idea.

Returning from Reno today, after a fun, relaxed time with my
son, Chip. We drove up and back together for my mother-in-
law's funeral in Brewster, Washington.
I am not saying my mother-in-law's funeral was fun, but it
was relaxed and positive, and after seeing her alone and
unable to communicate for 8 years, we were happy to have her
resting peacefully.
And I should add I did get a brief visit with my brother,
Roy CROSS ('65) in Kennewick who for some reason I don't
understand does not read the Sandstorm.
We had beautiful days to drive both ways, and I love the
scenery in the west. Then Saturday I drove to Placerville, CA
to visit long-time friends (NBs), and the sky was brilliant
blue, the snow-covered Sierra and Mamouth mountains were out
in all their splendor, truly a sight for sore eyes.
I am sorry for Jim McKEOWN's ('53) loss of spouse, and Ed
WOOD's ('62) loss of his son. My sympathies extend to
everyone who has lost someone near and dear to them. But I
will also add we are blessed to have happy memories of being

GREAT PICTURES OF IDITAROD RACERS! The best collection of
photos of Iditarod dogs and mushers I've ever seen. To me,
the Race was more fun to watch when it lasted longer. Having
lived in Anchorage and that area, I've seen lots of starts
and, via TV, lots of "parts" of the Race. Amazing fortitude
by both people and dogs.
I've been sick (not COVID-19) for 2 weeks. Seems like longer.
Started out as a cold but developed into Laryngitis, ear
infections and congested lung. Sounds like COVID but we got
tested and they said they'd call us if it was COVID and we
haven't got a call so I'm trusting we are okay that way. I
have one more antibiotic pill to take this afternoon. I don't
feel that close to being all well. Terry SHEGRUD ('55, '56
and '57) has been taking Belle for walks every day and doing
the cooking. We took Kay to get her shot at TCCM but they
wouldn't do ours because of me being sick. They said to come
back when I'm well. They are doing the Jannsan (by Johnson
and Johnson), the one-shot vaccine.
[Maybe don't get that shot! -Maren]

With this daylight saving time adding another hour of

I have read with growing enthusiasm the number of people (
supposedly well learned folks) that the COVID is a myth. I
hope that number increases. What a neat way to thin the herd,
and save on vaccinations.
It would also raised the IQ of the USA by 3.6 points. now to

damage caused by COVID-(the non existing kind) 19. forcing me
to upgrade to a minimal 5 liters of oxygen, from a here-to-

perform.
I do have one major truck load of thanks to Covid. I have

To: Bob LeCLAIR ('65)
I so appreciate all of the postings about the Iditarod every
year. I am constantly amazed at the amount of planning,
scheduling, and WORK that is required before the mushers even
get to the race start. They have to be quartermasters,
veterinarians, dog psychologists, weather experts, race
strategists, and so much more. And I cannot even imagine
how much they have to carry on the sled during the race. I
suspect that those few days of the year that they are NOT
engaging in any of the above are spent in total exhaustion
and brain freeze, maybe even boring! Thanks to Maren and Bob
LeClair and others who bring the race to Bomber Nation back
here in little old Richland and around the world.

Re: Iditarod question
With the Iditarod over for another year, you'll soon be in
the throes of withdrawal! You've introduced a whole lot of
us to a sport we otherwise may have never known. Thank you!
Looking at the Atlantic photos (thanks, Bob LeCLAIR ('65)!),
I suddenly realized that I've always assumed that all of the
dog teams were likely huskies. Now I see what appear to be
some other breeds sprinkled in? I'm referring to photo 5
(Mille Porsild's team) and photo 22 (Joar Leifseth Ulsom's
team). What can you tell us about that?
[MOST of the dogs have been bred and
are not an AKC registered breed but are
called Alaska Huskies. MOST have longer
legs than regular Huskies. There's one
guy who races Siberian Huskies. There
was even a team of standard poodles ONE
year! They don't HAVE to be Alaskan
Huskies. Many mushers have their own
kennel and breeding program. Dallas
Seavey's "North" (his main leader this
year) is the son of two dogs that were
both in one of Dallas's previous
championship teams. They breed champions
and then raise and train them. -Maren]
Maren, I thought you might like these, too. I sure did!

Re: The very late 3/17 & 3/18 Sandstorms - the official story
After I finally THOUGHT I sent the 3/17 Sandstorm -- which
wasn't till around 2pm on 3/17 -- I had some potatoes from
the small batch of corned beef & cabbage that I had started
in the LITTLE slow cooker around 2am... Put the rest of the
corned beef in the big slow cooker with carrots... Took a nap
(I hadn't slept all night)... when I woke up, I was cold and
could feel the A/C... went to the kitchen to see if the
carrots were cooked and realized when I opened the fridge
that I had NO LIGHTS -- so A/C, but no lights. It was 6pm by
then and I texted my daughter that I had A/C but no lights.
She suggested the breaker so I contacted the landlord to find
out where the breaker box was. Landlord called... breaker box
was outside... I kept him on the phone while I went outside
to check... Bobby, my good neighbor across the street came
over and asked if I was an electrician now... No? Well, he
had the same problem: A/C but no lights. Turns out there were
4 houses (mine and three directly across the street) all with
A/C and no lights. They had all called the power company
while I was napping -- TWICE -- and a truck was SUPPOSED to
be here "in 20 minutes"... getting dark by the time the power
company arrived.
All this time neither slow cooker was working... and I had
completely forgotten about the 3/17 Sandstorm... Finally got
lights about 8:30pm... took another nap and got up around
10:30pm to start working on this 3/18 Sandstorm... didn't
give the 3/17 Sandstorm another thought till I checked the
email from "AKA" who said the 3/17 Sandstorm was on the
website, but NOT in his inbox... so the 3/17 Sandstorm
wasn't sent until 12:48am on 3/18!!!!!
That's my story and I'm sticking to it...

Re: Home thoughts from abroad
Been ruminating your recent thoughts of moving to that new
Richland apartment complex, and how you had put money down,
but then were discouraged by one Fred MORSE ('63) who sent
you a "prophetic text": "What are you going to do, come here
and stare at the Columbia River?"
Am REMINDED of American poet Robert Frost who famously wrote
that "one can do worse than be a swinger of birches" (meaning
a fleeting return to a carefree youth). One can also do worse
than stare at the Columbia River. Like Steve McQueen said of
his mother to Candice Bergen (in the great flick, The Sand
Pebbles, 1966): "she didn't count for much in that town, but
a Great Dame." Same, maybe, for the Columbia River-as a kind
of "great dame" to come home to. The Col-Hi alma mater that
no one notices any more.
our alma mater
Now, NOT EVERY DAY on the River can be a red-letter day, but
I do recall one day when my own mother-a daily bird-watcher
on the river trail ("the Bird Lady") until the ripe age of
94- reported that she had spotted a red flamingo [!] out on
the nearest island. Sure enough, about that time "the news"
reported that a flamingo had escaped an aviary in Portland.
Must have followed the ducks north.
And, not seen in the earlier years, farther out by boat, are
the Great White Egrets and pelicans. Used to be only
seagulls. And, in the River, when the 300 Area was still in
operation, at least two alligators escaped; one was snagged
on a fishing line near the Ringold hatchery and the other
captured downstream at the "Y". During my graduation summer I
ran into a sturgeon fisherman on Bateman Island. Had his pole
clamped to the grill of his truck, waiting for a sited
12'footer to take a bite.
These are rarities and things are more routine now, but just
last summer during a short visit back to God's Country, I was
checking out AMON PARK. Trees are bigger. Nice paved trail
there. "Plop, plop!" What's this landing at my feet? Why,
it's half of an eviscerated seagull. Looking up, barely over
my head, I see not one but two bald eagles ripping into
what's left of a morning snack. I could almost feel the draft
as one left the branches and winged its way upstream. The
other hogged the rest of the scraps.
The point being, again, that to "stare at the Columbia
River" is NOT all that bad, once we get into the details and
maybe even the calming flow of the seasons. Especially in
Autumn. And now with the sternwheelers visiting, one might
even go historical and imagine the echoes of "mark twain" in
the air. One can do worse... .
As for other things to do, maybe readers of SS can send in a
raft of ideas. Besides the Spudnut Shop, WHAT ELSE-LARGE AND
SMALL--IS GOIN' ON IN TOWN, that Rick and others need to hear
about??? Where's the list?

Daylight saving time does not give us more daylight. It only
means that the morning looses an hour of light and moves it
to the evening. So while it may seem like we have more
daylight, we actually don't.
This year I'm having trouble adjusting to the change. For the
past five years I have been in Arizona visiting my brother,
John ('67), in March. (We are in the Pacific time zone and
John is in the Mountain time zone.) They stay on standard
time, so I don't notice the change because I loose that hour
when I arrive. Since I'm essentially on vacation time doesn't
matter and when I arrive back here the clocks are on my time.
Because of COVID I had to stay put and I'm getting really
tired of it!

Re: my two cents worth on daylight saving time
Whatever the reasons were for adopting daylight saving time
(more useable daylight or energy savings), I think most folks
like the longer daylight evenings afforded by it,
particularly in the northern states.
Current initiatives by several states would have us stay on
DST permanently. Suits me! If all the western states do it,
then we have Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, California
AND Arizona on the same time with no semi-annual clock
changes. My son in Phoenix says he believes most Arizonans
would like that as well. They would then, year around, be on
the same time as Nevada and California.

"What are you going to do, come here and stare at the
Columbia River?"
I cannot argue your sentiments, Pete. BTW, I always enjoy
your gifted posts. I will tell you I try to not write too
much entry because most of us that read the AS ...how can I
put this ...we are an older crowd and I try not to bore
anyone this early in the morning out of fear I might make
someone fall asleep reading my post, fall out of their chair
and break a hip.
Fred MORSE ('63) and I talk a lot on the horn. I will expand
on his words of wisdom. Fred was just telling me I live in
Huntington Beach, CA. ...Let me back up. I left Richland for
the last time in 1979. I would be coming back to a city that
is absolutely nothing like the one I left. We all could see
the boundary line in those days between each city,
particularly east Pasco.
Fred says... why would I come back to Richland during the
Covid 19? I live in Huntington Beach, CA where it is warm sun
in the middle of Winter and three seasons out of four I have
to watch girls (17 & U)... for only a couple seconds, and
women (18+) for only a couple minutes ...walk by my apt.
wearing knock off Chinese high top Chuck Taylor's in a
bikini. Why come now? No taverns/bars. No nothing. We also
have to wear a mask in the Tri-Cities. Nothing going on. Etc.
Etc. Why not wait? We are looking at one, probably two years
before anything looks normal again, if ever.
This was just one of the often foggy conversations Fred and I
have in-between the pool rack stories, tequila shots and ...I
cannot recall. "Fast Freddy"
Furthermore, I love the Mighty Columbia River. In eighth
grade I went to a party on the dock of (KNOX '69). I did not
know how to swim. My mother said no more dock parties. She
was afraid I would get tossed off the dock during our
youthful horse-play. I went to Mr. Chitty's pool in the
summer between 8th and 9th grade and learned how to swim. A
late bloomer ...in just about everything.
I also love the Yakima and Snake rivers. My granddaughter
and great grandson live in Lewiston, ID. I also love the
Clearwater River out of Lewiston; Lolo Pass and into
Missoula. MT, which I have traveled to and from Huntington
Beach visiting my granddaughter. I have traveled the United
States extensively for eighteen years doing my genealogy
project. Missouri Ozarks (Mom born there in 1927) where it is
at times nothing but a GPS arrow on a green field display.
And a good idea to have a name when you stop for directions
from a farmer out in the middle of nowhere. I kid you not.
Some favorites - grandfather Maddy's farm (Lucas Co., IA). My
father, grandfather, G, GG, GGG all buried within 20 miles of
each other. I was born same area in Knoxville, IA. Yakima (my
sister Sheila '66 b. in Yakima) where Mom's family came to in
'37 (apples). Ava, Douglas Co., MO (mother born there '27).
Fordland, Webster Co., MO (1847). Beatrice (Be At Triss), NE
(1857). Manchester, Coffee Co. TN (1815). Portland, ME
(lobster). Boston Harbor. Myrtle Beach, SC. Tybee Island, GA.
St Augustine, FL. Orlando, FL. Rawlins, LA. The Alamo. So
many many places and living in my van for 4-8 weeks. Wal-Mart
parking lots. Cheap hotels to watch the news; get squared
away. Leave the Winnebago at home.
And someday I will come to the Tri Cities. Need to be near
my family. My burial plot is in Yakima where my mother is
buried. I bought the plot about eight years ago. I was with
my granddaughter. She picked the urn for my ashes. She will
never forget that someday. She was 17.
To: Anita FRAVALA Griffin ('73)
I cannot argue your sentiments either, Anita.
Spudnuts!! Don't tease me. Several years ago I had Jim
ADAIR's ('66-'67) wife, Kathie MOORE Adair ('69), Fed-Ex me a
dozen. Had to nuke 'em -Hanford style. Certainly not the same
as 'being there', but NO COMPLAINT!! Could not believe she
did that and have never forgotten it. I cannot wait for
another day in 'The Shop' with three glazed and coffee
w/cream.
I will tell you about SoCal. In Sept. 1999 I left WA state (I
was 50) and moved to Kihei, Maui. I was there until Dec. 12,
2001. 9/11 moved me off the island. Came into Seattle during
a rainstorm (duh) and the last time I was on anything that
flew. I grabbed my down-for-the-count son and we moved to HB,
CA. Been here 19 years April 17. Son went back to Seattle ten
years ago.
I live two blocks from the ocean and four blocks from the HB
Pier. I have been divorced now for 25 years (I know, anything
under 100, write it out!!). I can live anywhere in the free
world. Taxpayers pay my bills. I imagine that is also you. I
chose living in HB. A real hoot. Nothing but bars, the young,
surfing, bars, bikinis, bars ...you get the idea.
Nothing in CA affects my daily life. Politics. Taxes.
Nothing. If I could not afford it, I would not be here. As a
matter of fact, that large one bedroom apt. in Richland was
going to cost me the exact same price as I pay here in HB,
($1850). Blood money from the Vietnam war. The
Californication, the freaks and geeks, the nuts and fruits
...my favorite is avocado, trying to not offend anyone here
...the Alphabet people. The steers. Nothing has anything to
do with my lifestyle no matter where I live. As a 71 year old
seriously disabled Vietnam war veteran, you can only imagine
what I do not give a grunt about.
I can only say I am here for the weather and I am on American
soil. Give me a few days. I change my mind constantly. I
shall return.

There is a Spudnut Shop in Oxnard, CA and one in Ventura, CA
---have been to both, when we still lived in Bakersfield----
will admit they don't taste as good as the ones at the
Spudnut in Richland, but they are "Spudnuts", so can't go
wrong. *grin* not sure how far a drive that would be for you,
from Huntington Beach, but it was ONLY two hours for us, from
Bakersfield. My youngest daughter is a "beach nut" even
though she lives in Bakersfield, so any chance she gets to
"head to the beach", she's more than ready and willing---she
usually makes the "trek" to Oxnard, once a year and would
always bring me home a dozen "Spuddies"---always made sure to
bring lots of maple bars, as those are my favorites. Now that
I am in Idaho, I am five hours from the Spudnut Shop, in
Richland---always make it a stop, whenever I venture up to
the Tri-Cities---still have family there, so usually make
that trip, once a year.
By the way, I enjoy reading your entries even though, at
times, I end up shedding a tear or two, reading what you've

Re: Daylight saving time
I am in favor of doing away with daylight saving time
completely. It serves little or no purpose and causes some
issues for many people. In the past year we have held more
Zoom meetings and teleconferences with people in Asia, South
America, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. It's common for
someone to miss a meeting because they don't calculate the
time zone changes. Let's just get back to real time so I
don't have to change the clocks. I'm old and keep forgetting.

Re: Fast cars
OK, Dick PIERCE ('67) got it started talking about his 1959
black Chevy Impala with the 348 cubic inch V-8 engine. There
were a couple of juvenile crimes back in those days growing
up in Richland, and those were - reckless driving (comparing
speeds), and minor in possession (Oly in bottles at $1.09 per
six pack). Typically, the offenses happened together.
A fun-filled Friday night consisted of driving to the state
highway by Horn Rapids and watching the upper-classmen close
off the road to public traffic - yes, they turned cars around
and sent them back to where they came from. Then, the drags
began, until the state troopers showed up and sent the crowd
fleeing in all directions.
My personal joy toy was a black 1956 Mercury with a 292 cubic
inch V-8 bored to 301 with a four barrel carburetor, racing
cam-shaft, and lake pipes with removable caps. I recall that
the Chevy 283s and 348s seemed to be a bit quicker. Does
anyone remember the guy who drove the Corvette with the 427
that pretty much smoked everyone else at the drags?

there, or was it only for the boys? -Maren]

Re: '56 Mercury; and Horn Rapids drag races, and...
http://alumnisandstorm.com/Xtra/Mil/210323_56_Merc.jpg
Can't say that I recall the '56 Mercury shown by Jo MILES
('64), but from his front yard I do recognize the shared
neighborhood. Across from the car on Howell is the home of
Jim SPENCER ('62-RIP), and directly behind the car on Hodges
Court is the "R" house (covered patio visible in back) where
I lived beginning in June 1956.
Now, as for Horn Rapids, to some locals this is possibly the
center of the known universe, so please forgive the following
verbosity. . .
FIRST, local cultural events other than the very exciting
irrigation diversion dam itself (c. 1908) and the more
contemporary drag racing, up until the 1960s, at least, in
the springtime one could always see a seasonal collection of
teepees and fishing platforms of the YAKAMA NATION, more real
than any living history museum.
SECOND, at the very same time, right across the highway, was
one of the launch sites for the futuristic RICHLAND ROCKET
SOCIETY, Co-Hi's student answer in '58 or '59 to Sputnik.
(This observation bunker in the hillside immediately north of
the baseball fields today.) The society was started by a
cluster of physics-smart upper classmen (Tom BEAULIEU ('59),
Alan WAGGONER ('60), and several others). But, as a tagalong,
I do recall one later launch engineered by, I think, David
HENRY ('62-RIP). By this time the solid-fuel rockets were
two or three feet long, ignited electrically, and were well-
known nationally. (The society's written constitution was
published as a model for later rocket societies.) The rocket
accelerated straight up-much faster than the Horn Rapids drag
racers!-but then pivoted 180 degrees to bury its nose into
the desert hardpan. No mystery why the observation bunker
roof was constructed of railroad ties.
THIRD, Jo MILES ('62) mentions the POLICE-the state patrol.
To the remotely related question-"have you ever spent a night
in jail?"-I must confess an ambivalent answer. . . . From
Horn Rapids, during one spring break four of us hiked west
to Prosser, on the north side of the Yakima River (me, John
BEAULIEU ('62), Gaynor DAWSON ('65), Lee MICHELS ('62). Our
great Stand-by-Me Adventure of 1961! We crashed at a Prosser
bowling alley. Behind the burger counter was the daughter of
Sheriff Pete Peterson who was summoned, complete with badge
and side arm, to inspect the four drifters. With his approval
we bivouacked in the city park. The local police (a one-horse
town) was informed. A teeth-chattering night. A frost layer
on our sleeping bags. Unblinking and uncaring stars stared
down as a forlorn hound down some distant alley yapped and
yapped at the full moon. Finally, 3:00 a.m. and still no
sleep. Hiking at night sounded good, with the plan to sleep
after sunrise.
FOURTH, just then, along comes the patrol car, with an offer
to be housed in a heated hole-in-the-wall jail: "I'll lock
the cell in the open position; don't touch anything on my
desk (there was a desk underneath that mess), and if you
leave before I get back at 8:00 a.m., lock the front door
behind you." In those days the single Prosser jail cell
measured 7' by 7', featured two chained pallets that flipped
down from opposite walls, and was painted silver all over to
cover the mold. "The Law" bolted out the door, and snagged
his holster on the doorknob. Yanked free; and it was observed
"someday that guy is going to SHOOT himself in the butt."
Which he did! A month later the local story showed up in the
Tri-City Herald.
So, as for the centrality of Horn Rapids in the known
universe, in addition to the scenic prisoners' fruit picker
camp and then drag racing, there's also Indian fishing from
"time immemorial," modern rockets toward space and back to
earth, the point of debarkation for a journey out West on
foot and ending in a half a "night in jail," and timely news
about a shooting when the overpriced local rag still reported
local events.

Rapids Monument of some sort.

Re: Drag Races
I remember going to 'the drags' on some Friday and Saturday
nights. It seems that we went to Columbia Park on Friday
nights and Horn Rapids road on Saturday nights, but I could
be mistaken. The races in Columbia park usually didn't go
beyond a couple of races before the cops arrived to break up
the fun. I always wanted to ride in one of the cars for a
race, but was never allowed to because it was deemed 'too
dangerous'. The Horn Rapids races usually attracted the 'big
gun racers' with some really cool cars. Many girls were in
attendance at both sites, so it wasn't just for boys.
Thanks for the memories, Jo.

John CHOATE ('64) and we didn't date in

Nice Merc. Looks strong and probably weighed as much as my
'59 Impala. The 283 & 327 were strong, while my 348 was a
truck engine. At least that's what the Ford guys said. As far
as the tomfoolery goes at the drag strip, and that's a good
start, I was looking more for those little pranks we used to
do in the days of youth that really should have gotten us in
trouble.
What the hell. They say age gets rid of most of our fears, so
here goes.
About 8-10 of us (no names) spent the majority of our Sundays
during the winter months in high school visiting our old
elementary schools we attended to play basketball. Sacajawea,
Jason Lee, Marcus Whitman, Lewis & Clark, Jefferson, where
else did we visit to play bball? We liked the elementary
schools because they all had hardwood floors with 9 foot
basketball rims. We were all in high school, so most of us
could dunk on a 9 ft. rim. It was like the NBA. We'd play for
hours.
I have to tell the truth. We never broke a window, or a door,
or anything to get inside those winter days until one fateful
Sunday. The worst we ever did is go into the teachers'
lounges and get into the freezer and eat Creamsicles while
laughing at the absurdity of it all. We just played ball.
And ate Creamsicles. Until that one Sunday at Jason Lee. We
looked everywhere for a door ajar, or an unfastened window.
Nothing. I forget who did it, but someone broke an overhead
window in the gym. That little act led to the oldest of us
bringing in a Yamaha and racing up and down the hallways
before hitting the lounge.
I remember feeling bad about that, but you know what they
say; partners in crime. I recall there had been a janitor on
duty that day, and that is how Richland's finest caught us as
we were playing away. Only one of us (R.B.) was 18, so he got
hauled down to talk with Stout and Thomas, while us 17 year
olds skated.
Every time I see a Creamsicle I smile.

Re: I was late because . . .
Last September several of us sent in stories about some of the
crazy, stupid, funny, and/or amusing things that had happened
to us in the work force or the military. I come across another
one looking at my old stuff. I kept a lot of those "home-made"
jokes that workers made, xerox, and pass around. Got to where
I had enough of them that I put them in a three-ring binder.
Someone had this little form to fill out that I thought was
hilarious. It was very well made and actually look like it was
printed, not copied, on a heavier than usual blue paper. You
were supposed to fill out the reason why you were late for
work. I made a copy of it, then I found out it was NOT a joke.
At least it was not intended to be a joke. Another employee
who had been working there a lot longer, I believe it was Bob
CAMPBELL ('51-RIP) but can't be sure, said the company had
them printed up, made into little pads and passed them out to
the employees. They were serious about wanting them to be
used!!! However, everybody laughed at them and made fun of them
so in very short order they came around and collected them.
Someone had the foresight to keep at least one of them.
By the time I started work there the company had been bought by
Automation Industries, and their name was put on the drawings,
but everyone still referred to the company and Vitro
Engineering. Because of the dashed line on the side I was able
to measure and determine it was about 4 1/4 wide by 5 1/4 tall.
It seems to me like it was a medium shade of blue and I tried
to photoshop that color onto it, but it just didn't look good,
so I left it the xeroxed color.

last drove by his parents' "B" house on Thayer and my parents'
Ranch house on Chestnut both looked terrible. My question: If
one was to buy either of those houses, remove them to the
ground, and rebuild, would he/she have to rebuild the same
style, or be free to build something completely different as
long as it fit the lot- Thanks.

Maren,
After nearly 50 years of traveling and living on the Coast
(Seattle, Edmonds, California) I decided to return to Richland
to live. I purchased a ranch house halfway between the one on
Wright Street and the K house behind Densow Drugs where I grew
up from 1948 until I left for the US Navy in January of 1958.
A good bit of work left to do on the "new" ranch house, but it
will be fine. It certainly is not the Richland that I left all
those years ago, but enough remains to make me feel at home,
although Thomas Wolfe was correct in many ways. The Richland I
left no longer exists.
In any event, I am glad to be back. After about 18 months I am
comfortable in my choice to leave LaLa land on the coast. Lots
of US Flags wave here, including one on my house. Still a few
of the '58s around and am meeting new good people all the
time.
I will send more when I finish the house.

Re: Alphabet houses
You question whether possible replacements to the alphabet
houses would have to look the same has a simple answer, but
inspires some wild imaginings...
Short answer: NO.
Some of the new neighborhoods have restrictive covenants, but
the rest of the town is not limited by either restrictive
covenants or deed restrictions, except those limitations
contained in the typical zoning code.
Long answer: WHAT IF...
But what if, say, some enterprising attorneys and interest
groups lobbied to have all of Richland declared and limited
under history preservation statutes or even as an Historic
Monument? Maybe by simple annexation to the existing Hanford
Reach National Monument (now covering the Hanford Nuclear
Reservation and the northern and eastern banks of the
Columbia)?
Or, worse yet, what if the designation of "alphabet houses" is
ever declared a "hate crime" on the grounds that alphabets
other than our Latin or Roman alphabet were not considered-say
Urdu, or Hindi, or maybe Arabic and Native American sign
language or even Chinook Jargon?
Within these multiple alphabets every house might then lobby
further to become its own unique type (like the logical end
game of identity politics!): According to Wikipedia, the
Atlantic-Congo language group includes 1,432 languages; the
Austronesian 1,275 languages, the Indo-European 588 languages,
and the Sino-Tibetan 494 languages, etc. Almost enough for each
and every house in Richland!
THEN... all of any replacements to the alphabet houses would have
to follow the original and quicky building standards of 1942
(Connie's question), when it was assumed that Richland would
simply disappear after three or four years. But then along came
the Cold War and neighborhood permanence. When the 1945
Richland High School was replaced in 1962 it was found that
some of the flooring was supported by nothing more than
vertical lengths of left-over 2' x 4's. A tough standard to meet.

All very good arguments for not being able to build what you
want on your own lot. But, what about those people who made
"A" and "B" houses into single dwellings?
And, don't forget that those 1944/45 2"x4" s were actually
2"x4" not 1-3/4"x3 3/4". Just sayin'

house is made of actual dimensional lumber and not what
is sold today.

Re: Memory exercise:
Long ago there was a young man who fabricated an adapter to
convert the conventional three speed column shift to linkage
that was a floor shift. If I am correct the shift pattern was:
pull upward and forward to reverse, up and back for first, drop
down and forward second, down and back for third. The name of
the inventor/fabricator flowed into the term "so and so
shifter" and it was cool sounding. And it has become one of
those empty spots some where between my ears and I would
appreciate filling it with something. I call it cobweb
dementia. One of those things that was meant to be forgotten
but forgot to forget, complicated process that to this day has
no acronym.

springtime progressing a little ahead of usual I think.

Re: Alphabet Houses building restrictions
I believe there are restrictions on renovations in a small
area that has been entered into a national historical
registry. I don't know what would happen if one burned down.
