There are, on the Bomber calendar, at least two birthdays
worthy of note. So, let's have a great big "Happy Birthday!"
to Ann ENGEL ('63) and Alumni Sandstorm.
(an addition): For Don Sorensen (NAB):

Think the railroad bridge over the Yakima River was built
before the 1948 flood. The old highway bridge (the truss
bridge) can be seen in the background. The flood wiped out
both highway bridges and left the railroad bridge intact. The
flood may have scoured out some of the railroad fill on either
side.

Re: Ranch Houses
The architect's floor plan for ranch houses actually said
there was a COAL BIN off the utility room. If memory serves,
there was even a removable "hatch" where Housing would dump
the coal in. We never used the coal furnace, but former
residents obviously did because it was really dirty with coal
dust. I cleaned it out and it became my little personal space.
We used electric space heaters. Speaking of ELECTRIC SPACE
HEATERS: That's how pre-fans were heated. That's my story and
I'm sticking to it.

Re: Pre-fab heating
In the 3 bedroom version there were, I believe, six electric
heaters. One was a two-burner mounted in the bathroom wall.
There was one semi-portable two burner units in the two
smaller bedrooms. The "master" bedroom, the living room and
dinning room each had a semi-portable three burner unit. By
semi-portable, they could be un-plugged from the wall socket
and plugged into any other proper wall socket, and they could
be positioned within the limits of the electrical cord. To the
best of my recollection, there was no heater in the kitchen;
guess the stove was to take care of that. Surprisingly, they
would keep the house fairly warm on even the coldest day.

Re: Riverland Classification Yard
http://alumnisandstorm.com/Xtra/Sor/210802_00.htm
To: All Bombers
I used to think B Reactor, 37.2 miles, was the furthest point
Hanford busses delivered workers. Apparently I was wrong,
Riverland Round House and Classification yard 42.8, takes the
prize. There was only day shift 7:48 to 4:18 it consisted of 1
foreman, 7 diesel electric locomotive mechanics and 1 service
man. Patrol was there 27/7 and the couriers where when they
had cargo to shepherd.
All maintenance and decontamination of locomotives was carried
out and provided water for steam engines. When steam locos
were phased out I have no idea I would guess sometime before
1950.
Other information, utilization of train crews 47% Power (coal
deliveries), 37% Production (reactors) Separations (T & B
Plant), 6% Community (?), 5% Purchasing & Stores and 5% Design
& Construction. These numbers are from Oct '49 to Feb '50.
This workforce averaged 1800 cars a month, without them and
others working in harmony Hanford would flounder.

mostly Milwaukee (CMStP&P) in the beginning. The two diesels

>>From: Maren SMYTH ('63 & '64)
This will NOT be daily -- at least not at first...
My big brother, Tim ('62) told me I needed to put this in
the EMAIL Sandstorm, so here it is:
Friday - 7/30/21 - feeling like sh*t n little fever (like
maybe 99°).
Wednesday - 3:06 A.M. on August 4, 2021. I was tryig to work
on the Sandstorm for August 4th... I became so confused, and
didn't know what to do next. I fell out of my chair while
working on the Sandstorm. When I fell I passed out, and hit my
head. I layed there, on the floor for a while with lights
flashing. I finally sat up on the floor, but couldn't find my
new phone.
Still Wedesday - At 4:27 A.M. I texted my daughter, Stacey,
that I was going to call 911 after I texted her. I was so
confused I never actually called 911. I decided that I was
going to try to drag myself over to sit up on a 1 foot high
stool, which I did. I figured out how to get from there into
my bed.
My dauhter to the rescue! When she came in my house I was in
bed by then. We decided that we would call my primary care
doctor and see what they wanted us to do. We went to see the
Physicians' Assistant. She asked if we wanted to go to the ER,
and my daughter asked "What would they do there that y'all
won't do here?" They took blood and a urine sample, X-rays, CAT
Scan, etc. It wasn't a stroke.
Still Wednesday - They had me go get a COVID test - which was
positive.
Thursday 8/12/21 - I got an infusion and a shot at home.
Friday 8/13/21 - Stacey took me to the E.R. as I wasn't
responding well to questions. My brain just was not working
well, I was admitted to the hospital - still very confused,
fluid in my lungs, and not getting enough oxygen to my brain.
Wednesday - 8/18/21 - After 5 days I came home on oxygen and
could think a bit better.
Thursday - 8/19/21 - Another trip to the E.R. - Stacey said I
wasn't responding well... This trip was NOT fun. Their test
for blood/oxygen in my blood that was VERY painful.. took
two nurses 5 times to get it right!! They admitted me again
but sent me home a few days later (without oxygen).
Now I'm home and feeling much better and more like myself than
I have in quite a while.

Alumni Sandstorm - RIPs ~ 09/19/21
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So, when I fell on 8/4/21, I hit my right tye. I think it's
still damaged because when I wear the contact in my right eye
for more than a few hours, it HURTS when I take it out. Trying
to get an appointment to have it looked at. The eye doc's next
"regular" apppointment is in October. Waiting on them to call
and see if I can get in to see him earlier.
IN THE MEANTIME, I'm limiting myself to just a few hours
wearing time and trying to get too much done in that short
time!
I'm working on the RIPs first. Was hoping to get all those
that came in while I was offline into this one issue, but
there are just too many, so I'm just doing them as I do them
and calling it good.
*Cross your fingers* and hope I'm doi8ng this right!!
I really do need to slow down a bit. I'm 76 years old now.
2. Bomber Birthdays and Anniversaries, check the All_Bombers
3. I'm gonna start with the "Old Stuff" that built up while I
Some interesting facts about The Octopus' Garden. The owner,
Gus Sato, is a Richland native and was almost a Bomber (he
started High School, as a Freshman, the first year Hanford
High School opened). He opened his first store in the Uptown
in 1976 and moved to his present location (1327 Geo. Wash.
Way, the old A&Z Specialties store) about 10 years later.
While selling greeting cards from small publishers and fun
gift items to locals has long been his main stock in trade,
Gus has been a long time supporter of the National Park (MAPR)
and BRMA. Other MAPR/BRMA items that he carries are T Shirts,
caps, magnets, and several Hanford related books.
supposed to arrive sometime "between October 5 and October
Now, as to the 1700 e-mails that Maren won't be able to get
to; some of them may have been mine wishing various and sundry
members of The Class of '54 and a few others felicitations on
birthdays and anniversaries. I may have also tooted a horn for
the Homer Davenport Family Festival in nearby Silverton and
Oktoberfest here in Mount Angel. Both came off fairly well
even though non-masked individuals were seen walking about. I
may have been one of them, but corn-dogs are hard to eat
through a mask.
[for 10/5/21]
Just an ordinary sort of entry from me today. There are a
couple of fellow classmates that are having birthdays today.
With that in mind, "Happy Birthday!" to Jan Bondurant and
Regina Williams (Both '54).
There's not much other news, except that we are expecting the
fall monsoon season to start any time, and that the leaves are
changing colors and beginning to fall.
Re: August in Richland
This posting is not two months late, but now ten months early!
For those who have not purchased a copy of Paul Beardsley's
reissued "The Long Road to Self-Government-1943-68," here's a
short-list of stuff, highly varied and sometimes shortened or
annotated, for August:
1945: Aug. 6: An atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan
at 9:15 a.m. The announcement was made by President Harry
Truman. The bomb was made at Oak Ridge, TN and Los Alamos, NM.
(note: From other sources, the Truman announcement
came sixteen hours after the event; the
destruction was so total-communications were so
decimated-that the rest of Japan did not know the
magnitude of what had happened until Truman's
announcement.)
Aug. 9: Second atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan. Bomb
was made at Hanford and Los Alamos. This ended World War II
with Japan on August 14, 1945.
(note: From other sources, the bomb components
arrived at Tinian two days early, such that the
scheduled leaflet warning arrived at Nagasaki one
day late. . . It had been estimated that the
fatalities would be 20,000, not the unexpected
80,000 when residents remained above ground. In
his biography, the popular historian David
McCullough ("Truman," 1992) remarks that Truman
himself did not know of the closely-spaced second
bomb (Nagasaki) until after it had already been
dropped.)
1946: Aug. 1: President Harry Truman signed the Atomic Energy
Act of 1946, which set up a 5-man Atomic Energy Commission who
were David E. Lilienthal, William W. Waymack, Lewis I.
Strauss, Dr. Robert F. Bacher and Sumner T. Pike.
1947: August 7: A suit was filed by the State Department of
the Division of Municipal Corporations for the dis-
incorporation of the old town of Richland. . . .
Aug. 16: Work started to smooth out the rough spots on the
mile-long dike which was built to save the village during the
June flood. . . .
1948: August 30: The 1948-49 school year began with 5,500
students and 224 teachers.
1949: Aug. 1: Increase in rents was announced by AEC designed
to reflect three factors: closer conformity to surrounding
rents, adjustment of rent among various house types and
differences due to desirability of location. Tenants will
assume (!) minor maintenance such as fuses, faucet washers,
broken windows, etc.
Aug. 11-14: The 2nd Annual Atomic Frontier Days was held. . .
(the 1st was in Sept. 1948; the 3rd August 1950, etc.}
1951: Aug. The report of the Scurry Panel (a group of experts
in housing and city management retained by the AEC in the fall
of 1950) recommended disposal (sale) and incorporation of both
Richland and Oak Ridge.
1952: Aug. 2: Said the Wall Street Journal: "Richland, like
Great Britain, is finding that it's a lot easier to dive into
socialism, that to wriggle free from it. Plans are underway,
however, to turn Richland into an ordinary city. The next
session of Congress is expected to finally free Richland from
the federal apron strings. But meanwhile, the first steps are
kicking up an awful furor. . . most everyone agrees that seven
years of government ownership and control have created a SNAFU
that won't be easily untangled. The whole thing is shaping up
as a $100,000,000 headache for United States planners and
taxpayers."
1955: Aug 1: City Council outlined transition program (issues:
coordination, minimize loss of key employees, decide class of
incorporation, mortgage funds, schedules, negotiation with
AEC, ordinances and regulations, study of transitional
problems, study of facility transfer, public relations)
Aug. 4: Public Law #221 passed by Congress (... ) provid(ing)
five years (until August 4, 1960) for Richland and Oak Ridge
to become incorporated (... .)
1957: Aug. 11: School enrollment was 7,168 (... .)(see 1948)
1958: Aug. 9: Census enumeration started, to be used as basis
for revenue distribution. Official Census Count-22,789.
1959: Aug. 1: Library transferred to the city.
1964: Aug. 3: Annexation of Island View and Richland Y
proposed.
1965: Aug. 1: Federal Building was completed and AEC and their
contractors were to start occupying offices.
1966: Aug. 1: W.E. Johnson appointed commissioner, U.S. Atomic
Energy Commission.
Re: Yakima River Railroad Bridge
Martha Berry Parker ("Tales of Richland, White Bluffs &
Hanford 1805-1943," Ye Galleon Press, 1987) reports: "The
bridge on Highway 240 south of Richland is located at the same
site as this one was in 1910 [photo and caption, p. 158]. The
Yakima's ice jams kept taking the wooden ones like this one
out. New bridges were built in 1905, '06, '07, '10, '17, and
'20."
Photos of the existing steel railroad bridge, already well in
place during the 1948 and 1949 floods, appear on page 18 on
Paul Beardsley's "The Long Road to Self-Government" (1968). In
1948 "(a) )65-foot section of the wooden highway bridge had to
be removed due to an ice jam."
Re: Ye olde Richland history Sept./Oct.
Just a few highlights from Beardsley's "Long Road to Self-
Government" (1968):
1943: Oct. 13, Benton County Chapter of the Red Cross
organized and moved to the tract house at 510 Barth.
1944: Sept. 26, the first "pile or reactor" began operation in
the 100-B Area. (Closed Feb. 15, 1968.)
1945: Sept. 5, the first Richland Day Celebration; later
Atomic Frontier Days.
Sept. 28, Richland Office of Price Administration (Ration
Board) closed, and Richland residents had to go to Kennewick
for their ration stamps.
Oct. 20, Major General Leslie Groves, etc. were in Richland to
present the Army/Navy "E" Award (for excellence).
1947: Priority given to the construction of barracks and a
trailer camp in North Richland which would have a population
of 16,000.
1948: Sept. 20, Planting of 1,500 trees began in the shelter
belt west of Duane St. (now Goethals).
1949: Oct. 7, Richland dial telephone service began.
1952: Sept. 1, Electric meters installed eliminating the flat-
rate charge for electric service.
1953: General Electric announced the proposal to build a Dual-
Purpose Reactor at Hanford.
1954: Community Council asked the AEC to contract for a study
and survey of the future needs of a municipal corporation
(departments, personnel, equipment, pension implications,
accounting).
1955: Federal Housing Authority (FHA) began individual
property appraisals.
1958: Sept. 17, Freeholders completed new "City Charter" for a
council-manager form of government.
October: A total of 11,106 babies had been delivered at Kadlec
Hospital since it opened in June 1944 (an average of two per
day).
1964: Sept. 8, Special election as a result of referendum
petitions protesting sale of alcohol in neighborhood business
districts.
1965: Sept. 24, Richland Post Office relocated into the
Federal Building.
1967: Sept. 4, Atlantic-Richfield Hanford Co. awarded contract
to take over Isochem Inc. (chemical separations). Also planned
to build a convention center, a meat packing plant, cattle
feed lot, and organize a risk capital investment company.
Oct. 27, Battelle Northwest Technical Research Complex
dedicated.
Pete BEAULIEU ('62), Shoreline, WA.
As for the 1945 Army/Navy "E" Award, above, may we presume
that, upon her recent return to her duty station, the loyal
Sandstorm Readership hereby awards Maren Smyth the coveted
2021 ALUMNI "E" AWARD for excellence in all things great and
small, whose "performance reflects great credit upon herself
and is in keeping with the highest tradition of United States
high school Webpage Commanders" (somewhat as the expression
goes).
THANKS, Pete!
I'm pretty much back to normal after my bout with the china
virus. However, my favorite son-in-law didn't make it back. He
died on the 11th and I've been staying available for whatever
my daughter needs since then. The funeral/burial was yesterday
(the 15th). This is so difficult.
I decided that Maren should have an actual "E" to either stick
on her computer or some other place around her work station.
I wanted to find a white letter, but had to settle for a black
letter with a white background. I mailed it along with my
check for next year's subscription' which I usually send in
December. That way I can send two things for one stamp. Maybe
we should start hoarding "forever" stamps. You can bet the
price of postage is going up, too.
Re: National Pumpkin Seed Day - 1st Wednesday in October
https://www.nationaldaystoday.com/national-pumpkin-seed-day/
The Health benefits from Pumpkin Seeds are much more than you
probably realized!
Studies show that the antioxidants in pumpkin seeds also
increase nitric oxide levels in your body. This molecule works
to keep your blood vessels smooth, flexible, and healthy,
improving blood flow and reducing the risk of heart and
circulation problems.
BETTER SLEEP
Snacking on pumpkin seeds before bed may help you get a better
night's rest. Pumpkin seeds are a natural source of
tryptophan, an amino acid that promotes sleep. The zinc,
copper, and selenium in pumpkin seeds can also affect sleep
duration and quality. Finally, studies show that magnesium can
help reduce stress and anxiety, contributors to insomnia.
NUTRITION
Pumpkin seeds are rich in vitamins and minerals like manganese
and vitamin K, both of which are important in helping wounds
heal. They also contain zinc, a mineral that helps the immune
system fight bacteria and viruses.
Pumpkin seeds are also an excellent source of:
Phosphorus
Magnesium
Iron
Potassium
Copper
NUTRIENTS PER SERVING
A quarter-cup serving of dried pumpkin seed kernels contains:
Calories: 180
Protein: 10 grams
Fat: 16 grams
Carbohydrates: 3 grams
Fiber: 2 grams
Sugar: 0 grams
PORTION SIZES
Because pumpkin seeds are high in calories, limit your
portions to the recommended serving size of about one-quarter
cup. The seeds' high fiber content can help regulate your
blood sugar and make you feel fuller, however, lowering the
urge to overeat.
HOW TO USE PUMPKIN SEEDS
You can find pumpkin seeds with or without their shells at
grocery stores or scoop them straight from a whole pumpkin. If
buying a prepackaged product, look out for added ingredients
like salt that reduce the seeds' nutritional value.
Pumpkin seeds make a great snack on their own, and they're
easy to add to many meals and recipes.
Great ways to get pumpkin seeds' small-but-mighty health boost
in your diet include:
Add them to smoothies
Mix them into granola, yogurt, or cereal
Use them to add some extra crunch to a salad
Garnish any meal, like soups, chicken dishes, or pastas
Blend them with other ingredients in a dip like hummus,
pesto, or guacamole
Bake them into cookies and breads
Toast or roast them in any spice or seasoning for a
healthy snack
Re: A whole lot of noise, signifying nothing!
MY HOSPITAL TIME!
I recently spoke of my heart procedure and that I was safely
home. -----WRONG----!!!
After 24 hours at home from my last event, I began to notice
a very obvious truth. I felt measurably worse. So weak I could
not stand with out help. My caretaker had taken me to a Lab,
for blood work and on the way home, even that took a turn for
the worse. I had Rose (my caretaker) drop me off at the
emergency room at the local Medical facility/Barn door repair
and replacement co, Where after some hours I was taken back to
a room and stripped of all my raiment.
My vitals were taken ie: blood pressure (almost non
existent) Temp, oxygen saturation etc. Stuck in a former mop
closet, given a sheet the size of a diaper placed on a gurney
lumpier than Aunt Maud's country possum gravy. And told they
would be right with me. About 8:30 PM a cute little nurse came
in and she wanted to check the pulses in my legs. She didn't
look 16. But seemed non plused at me being dressed Ala
Commando neath that large napkin I had for a cover. At 10:30
an older nurse came in and said I was being transported. Well
the obvious questions came to mind. None of which she could
answer! Including why, when, where and on what doctor's
determination. Seeing as I had yet to be seen by a doctor. At
11:30 I was given two Tylenol and a melatonin followed by a
"narco" at 12 midnight. I quickly dosed off and enter slumber
land. Only to wake up in extreme agony at 1:30 AM with a back
spasm to end back spazims. I have no call button that I can
reach. I am stuck in the back end of an overcrowded over busy
small town hospital. So I did what I had to do. I struggled to
the end of that bed (which had rails big enough to make it a
cage) and managed to get my feet to the floor at the end of
the bed. Than's when I noticed that a hep-lock in my right
elbow was attached to an IV and non-rolling tree stand. There
I was half on and half off the bed, in a worse position that
had I just suffered the back spasm. Also no modest sheet to
cover me. There I was when not one but 3 nursers including the
16 year old came. She in particular thought I was rehearsing a
scene for a porno film.
After being beaten violently about the head and shoulders
verbally I was given a plastic air mattress (a treasure to be
sure) Back to sleep. 3:30AM the light suddenly comes on and
there stands what to me looked like a demented Danny Devito
with the shiniest bald head and white, wiry, twisted hair
standing straight up. Saying to me in a scratchy voive, "DO
YOU HAVE A DNR". I in my foggy and semi drug induced state
could not follow the conversation to well. So my natural reply
was HUH? IN which he misunderstanding my retort, asked in the
most sincere way, "Are you ready to die". MY sharpness of
mind suddenly came into play and I volleyed with "That was not
my plan that morning when I left home!" Well think about it he
replied. Meanwhile we are sending you to Memorial in --- WAIT
FOR IT --- WAIT FOR IT --- Bakersfield. My sharpness
overwhelmed him then, when I calmly asked if they had a
veterans' cemetery there. His answer "I don't know". Being
thus stumped he left the room. At which time I came to the
conclusion I was just dreaming and snuggled under my dinner
napkin and went back to sleep.
At 10:30 am sharp, I was awakened from my stupor and placed
on a lumpier gurney at which I balked. One of the attendants
quickly solved the problem. He lifted the air mattress, and
stole away.
It was a new Mercedes ambulance and I was impressed, till we
actually rode in the thing. Rattled like my first car. A 39
Dodge. Riding so elevated in the back it rocked and rolled
like a mal functioning washing machine. I was sea sick after
the 90 minute ride to my new home. Why we by passed such
places as Mercy a mega structure of a hospital well known for
its capabilities or the equally well know HEART HOSPITAL near
by, I may never know. But Hello Bakersfield.
I was whipped out in a flash rushed to the 5th floor and
quickly hid in an out-of-the-way room. Where I languished in
comfort for for about 2 minutes then I was inundated with 3
student nursers in RED jumpers where they practiced checking
blood pressure and temperature skills for several minutes.
Then came the first string varsity. Where I was probed in
places not meant to be probed. Enough blood was drawn to
supply the blood bank for a week. I am still naked from my
Hanford adventure. At which time one of the students noticed
and suggested I be supplied with a vestment. I was modestly
covered from the front. My posterior was left in the breeze &
was to remain so for the duration. I was left alone to fend
for myself
My phone was low on charge and I had not taken my charger
with me to the lab the day before so I was sans power to
rejuvenate it. So knowing thus, I dialed my Daughter in L.A.
and left a very brief message telling her I was in Memorial in
Bakersfield. Quickly hanging up to save power. I also turned
my phone off. Apparently I was wrong. As my Daughter was put
off by this knowledge and wondered why I was in Bakersfield.
So she immediately called Memorial Hospital only to find out
they had never heard of me. Now to the family I was lost. As
it turned out for whatever reason it had been decided to send
me to ADVENTIST HOSPITAL in Bakersfield. The ambulance in
route had been notified by radio to make that change while
still on Highway 99 with out notifying me in the back of the
bus.
For the next 3 days I am left to my own devices, seeing an
occasional doctor doing his residency requirements of seeing
patients. Asking me questions checking my blood pressure and
leaving with no information toward me. Bout midnight on the
3rd day I was awakened by a very tall, very black Nigerian man
who proclaimed he was a doctor and was there to help me. He
then smiled and his teeth was so white they intensified the
light into a spot light. He then proceeded to tell me why the
Dodgers collapsed like a cheap accordion and lost to Atlanta.
Unfortunately, he seemed much more knowledgeable about the
English game "Cricket" and Badmiton and added them to the mix
of his baseball lore. He then leaves me as gently as he came,
never to be seen again?????.
Next day early morning the blood drawing ceremony begins
again. I am informed to stop taking my medications till
further notice. Well seeing as all my medicines are back home
I can comply with that request.
Meanwhile I am trapped in my cage of a bed and going to the
bathroom is a lesson in logistics. So I am abandoned to a hand
held plastic urinal Now for several days I have lain with my
knees and head slightly elevated and my butt in a slight
depression. In the middle of the night I forget such mundane
things. I have since learned the two most important tenets of
a master plumber. Pee flows downhill and payday is on Friday.
The nurse said I was "not to receive any food by mouth" Which
immediately brought to mind the question of Who was going to
feed me WERE?
It had been almost 4 days since I had food. I was of course
hooked up to IVs supplying me what I thought was Ringers
Lactate. As you old timers may recall was the elixir of life
On the very redundant TV show "Emergency"! But now I was being
served with what they referred to as a cup of BROTH! Now I
have had Broth before. That was not Broth. Perhaps it was an
abbreviation for the word Brothel.
By the way, who ever it is that hones the rim of plastic
urinals has a way of sharpening the the jagged edge to a fine
degree. Once I sneezed during a urination. Darn near
circumcised myself
I Was told that I had internal bleeding/Apparently my
Cardiologist, Dr. Edward Scissorhands had snipped me a bit
close. So I was getting an Endoscopy in the mornings to find
the damage.
So it was done. No damage found. I was then informed that the
following day I was getting the OTHER endo-scopy. I was so
glad they had performed the first one in that order in case
they used the same device.
That afternoon I was brought a "Gallon" jug of a substance
called "GO-lytely" other than being nasty looking it gagged me
at each swallow. I was able to down about a quart before my
stomach refused to consume any more. So they gave me two tiny
orange pills instead. About 5 in the morning I awoke needed
immediate assistance to get out of of my cage bed and I needed
it NOW!
Picture if you will Mt. Vesuvius, exploding and burying
several near by coastal cities. Leaving me to ponder "Can
they surgically reattach my butt and will they find enough
remnants with which to do so!
That was when Mauna Loa erupted. It's lava flow intensely
sufficent to aid in enlarging the Big Island. All this left me
so drained I was just barely dangling from the "Cinch Bars"!
With considerable help and my newly obtained butt sling, I
made it back to bed. Where I was greeted by the night nurse
with a cold bottle of something called "Citrona"! Artificially
citrus flavored over sweetened clear liquid. Was almost
pleasant after the mis-named "GO-Lightly" I was informed I
needed to consume all 10 ouncess in the next hour. As I had
been assigned an appointment for a surgery Suite at 8 AM. At
the appointed time Julio showed up with a lumpy gurney and
loaded me up, and wheeled me to the elevators and zip there I
was parked in a what I call the star chamber due to its make
up. It is an enlarged juncture of 4 hall ways with several
surgical suites angling off. I am parked right across from the
nurses' station where several nurses are doing their paper
work. I am just laying there in semi comfort when the
Yellowstone basin earthquake alarm sounded. Lacking mobility,
I hastily summoned the nurse. She responds quickly with a bed
pan. There is vast rumblings from the neither world and OLE
Faithful erupts. Followed by its tendency to gurgle and burble
for several minutes. UT OH! NURSE, NURSE! What Now? Was her
expression. Till she was able to eye the brim full bed pan.
She, like the seasoned pro she was, quickly swapped bed pans.
Telling Jorge the orderly to take this out back some where and
bury it. She then told me I had all of 6 minutes till my TEE
time!
Before she could step away and close the vanity curtain,
several of the sulfurous ponds of Yellowstone over ran their
boundary. Nurse then stepped to her desk and over the in-house
phone, gave away my surgery time to the next candidate and
his doctor.
Brought back to the previous parking space, Nurse proceeded
to hose me down and pretty me up for my new appointed time
some 40 minutes hence. But in keeping with her girl scout
training of always be prepared she slaps bed pan 4 in place,
slams the vanity curtain and said she will will be back.
Left to my own devices and nothing else to do I soil bed pan
4. Nurse Nurse! With a pathetic cry of OMG what now, she pops
back behind curtain number 3. Have you ever noticed how
difficult it is to hide a snarl of discuss behind a plastered
smile, Nurse had that to a science. I was quickly shined and
polished just in time for the Proctologist, Dr. Strangelove to
appear. A very unhappy camper as due to the delay I had
created, he missed his TEE time. Now in hopes of catching up
with the guys at the 19th hole and Daiquiri and beer nuts, he
was expediting my procedure. An ex lumberjacks turned surgical
orderlies quickly twisted me in a pretzel shape and my back
may never be the same. I was gassed and left to the
peculiarities of Dr. Strangelove.
7 minutes tops, and he was done. Quickly leaving the room
with out even kissing me, nor a casual wave of next time we
will go to lunch afterward.
I swear, as I was wheeled out and down the hall a small
oriental nurse was heard to say "oh look-- 4 pan man!
Back in my room, Nurse Ratchet informed me, they had found
nothing not normally there. Perhaps after several days they
could do it again to double check.
Now its been almost 70 years since I was in the Navy, but my
power of recall came into play and with it I was later
informed, a stream of expletives not heard among humans since
we migrated from trees.
I was later told I damaged the ears of a student nurse down
the hall so badly she could no longer wear earrings.
I also found out, all though it was none of my doings that I
was in Bakersfield, it was my responsibility to return to
Hanford. It was during the largest rainstorm in several years
for California and surpassed the 25 year flood plain in
Bakersfield. The nurse's union did not care they just wanted
me gone.
It took till 6 pm to make arrangements for a medical
transport company to accept my Insurance, I was shoved into
the back of a transport van sitting in a wheel chair. Lifting
well above the center of gravity on a well used and shot
shocks of a ancient Ford van driven by Raymondo Ramaries who
had spent his youth driving a Tijuana Taxi. Singing mariachi
at the top of his voice along with his Spanish language Radio
we pin balled our way up Highway 99 thru a raging Rainstorm.
arriving just in time for the rain to cease.
I survived the Hospital once more.
PS it was decided that I was taking too many meds. Which I had
expressed some 9 days before.
Maren, hope your armed chair is comfy. Had one once upon a
And, on another subject: here's a "Happy Birthday!" wish for
I certainly hope the Rex Davis party in Pullman went well. If,
for no other reason, the celebrant is one of the truly good
Re: Grover'swhereabouts!
Well I retired this March on the urging of my youngest
daughter; who requested we join her family back east. So I
threw in the towel (reluctantly) we sold our home and got rid
of 30 years of accumulated STUFF and took a 34 day trip to our
new home in Virginia. We zigzagged across 19 states visiting
with our other 7 children and grand kids and great grand kids.
We also stopped in Montana to see Ken HEMINGER (WB '56) and in
Denver to visit Joe Polson ('53). We passed through the north
west corner old Louisiana to complete my 49th state visited.
To add to the story my daughter sold her home in Bedford, VA
so we are all homeless!!
I'm gonna buy some pumpkin seeds as recommended by my young
Re: Getting Older (When did that happen?)!
There's a joke about how, as we get older, we need to maintain
a positive attitude. It goes like this:
"When I fell down the stairs last week, instead of getting mad
at myself, I thought, 'Wow! That's the fastest I've traveled
in years!' "
Over the last few years, I've found that my right knee has
been moving closer to requesting a replacement. Not to be
outdone, my left hip started, gradually, to announce it's
intent to retire as well.
The argument got a bit heated, and in Mid-May 2021, there was
a showdown. Going up the stairs in our "S" house, the right
knee gave way and the left hip said "Not my job." I came down
the stairs on my back-head first, colliding with the wall at
the bottom. The scalp wound was quite happy to provide plenty
of blood and the ER at Kadlec patched me up.
Neither of the joints claimed full responsibility. But the
bickering was giving me a headache-a really bad headache.
I returned to the ER for some help. "Sure, we've got just the
thing," they said. I was out cold for most of the helicopter
ride to Harborview MC in Seattle and through the surgery to
relieve the subdural hematoma and even some of the recovery
time at Harborview.
They patched me up with a piece of my skull they cut out for
access (glued in with some "bovine" substance and a metal
plate with screws).
"Bovine"-somebody said they'd always known I was a bit bull-
headed. But I'll need to pay attention now. What if I get a
screw loose?
Things had settled down on that front quite nicely. But the
Joint Wars hadn't.
So, we scheduled the hip replacement for the end of June.
Canceled due to COVID [China virus] issues at Kadlec.
A July date looked good.
Canceled due to COVID [China virus] issues at Kadlec.
An August date was suggested.
Canceled due to COVID [China virus] issues at Kadlec.
September?
Not available due to COVID [China virus] issues at Kadlec.
October?
Done!
Afterward, the surgeon said the joint was really bad.
"What does that mean?" says I.
Says he, "Well, there was no cartilage in the joint and there
were so many bone spurs, it looked like cauliflower."
Says I, "Oh. That's why it hurt so much."
I'm 11 days into recovery and it is certainly better. There is
residual surgical pain but I can actually put weight on that
joint. They say I can recommence driving in the next week or
so.
Having to use a walker since the brain surgery has been a
lesson in humility. I've been one of those people who open
doors for those coming behind me. (Men, women, children,
cats...) But while I can fairly easily maneuver the walker
through doorways, I'm the one who is now being served, people
even getting out of their car for that purpose alone.
The first couple of days following my trip to Harborview,
anybody's "Can I help" was met with, "Thanks, but I think I've
got it." But I sensed some disappointment in their responses
and realized that I was depriving people of the feeling of
having helped somebody in need. So very selfish on my part,
arrogant even.
So, if by some odd happenstance, any Alumni Sandstorm reader
was one of those who received a refusal, I apologise and I'll
ask God to give you the full reward you would have received
but for my selfishness.
Such is part of the saga of Calendar Year 2021 for the Cadd
household. Another major part is that our granddaughter
Jasmine is now living with us full time. I won't go into any
detail but, if you are the praying type, please pray for my
continued recovery, our wisdom with regard to Jasmine (she's a
great kid), and our income.
All in all, it's been a very good year.
Sending out "Happy Birthday!" wishes to John BRUNTLETT ('54)
Certainly hope that Maren gets better soon; and that her power
is restored quickly.
In the meantime, I'd like to take this moment to wish Carl
VOLMER ('54) a "Happy Birthday!" Too bad Club 40's Annual
Meeting and Chowder Fest was cancelled, or I might have been
able to see him.
Based on the latest news from Maren, not too sure when this
will be published; but on this date those two crazy MacDONALD
Kids: Dorothy and Stan (both '53) got married. "Happy
Anniversary!"
Bob (Mike Clowes) Carlson '54 - at Mount Angel, OR, where
Oktoberfest begins on the 17th.
Re: 9/14 Sandstorm Entry
Once publication gets back on track; the first one may be
quite long. None-the-less, I will take up some space by
wishing Norma MYRICK ('54) a "Happy Birthday!"
Bob (Mike Clowes) Carlson '54 - at Mount Angel, OR, where
Oktoberfest begins this Friday. It may be wet.
Re: 9/15 Sandstorm Entry
Time for another birthday message: "Happy Birthday!" to Bill
and Forrest (R.I.P) (GOODENOW) Terry (both '54).
Bob (Mike Clowes) Carlson '54 - at Mount Angel, OR, where you
had best bring an umbrella if you are planning on attending
Oktoberfest this weekend (Sept. 17 - 19).
Re: 9/17 Sandstorm Entry
I would be deeply amiss and, quite possibly, suffer the rath
of "Fire Hair"('54) if I didn't wish Larry BELT ('57) a "Happy
Birthday!"
My civic duty is done.
Hard to fathom that he's that old. Seems like just yesterday
he got is Learner's permit. Understand Jeanette ('54) took him
out Trick or Treating yesterday and got him home before dark.
Just want to wish you a "Happy Birthday!" Jim.
there are still plenty of leaves on the old walnut tree.
Re: 11/2 Sandstorm Entry
Here we are at the 2th of November, just in time for Norma
her a "Happy Birthday!" because she is now old enough to
Bob writes: "Here we are on All Hallows (Saints) Day; the
pumpkins are smashed, out-houses have been tipped and many
things have been T.P.ed. ..." (on Nov. 1).
Regarding out-houses, I recommend to all the WSU Cougar pack
the roadside display along SR-26 eastbound on the way to
Pullman. Thereat, on the right side of the road, is the
shrinking and still proud hamlet of Washtucna (pop. 195), and
its town-history museum display behind a protective chain link
fence. So many visitors trying to get in!
The three relics are, FIRST, on the left a small bunch of ye
olde farm equipment; SECOND, and dead center the original
sheriff's office and jail ("188?" and barred window, even!)
which both together measure maybe seven or eight feet square;
and THIRD, an original and untipped-over outhouse with
crescent-moon window in the door.
The only other item possibly worthy of note is to be found in
a small clump of scraggy and dead trees a few steps closer to
the highway. Lacking an explanatory, museum-class panel are
the remains of a Great Blue Herron-which in Native American
lore is the symbol of self-reliance and determination. In the
scorching sun it must have sought shelter and water,
unsuccessfully.
Heading east from the Tri-Cities I once took the alternative
route passing first through the also-shrinking town of
Kahlotus (pop. 190). The fishing lake of the 1950s had long
since dried up. Likewise, the town. My impression of main
street is that it belonged in some kind of science fiction
flick, like the discovery in the desert of those five WWII
Flight-19 torpedo planes lost in the Bermuda Triangle in 1945
(lead-in to "Strange Encounters of the Third Kind"). In
Kahlotus activity was in such a fossilized state that no one
had even bothered to smash the windows in the long-deserted
store fronts. But a more recent and probably inhabited trailer
park at the south end.
A weird experience, that, fitting in well with remains of the
Great Missoula Floods of 20- to 40,000 years ago which are
especially visible in the surrounding Scablands (see NOVA:
"Mystery of the Megaflood"). This eastern Washington landscape
was the stand-in backdrop for the movie "Always," as also was
the Ephrata airport (cast as Flatrock, Colorado).
-Pete BEAULIEU ('62) ~ Shoreline, WA where the recent lockdown
sometimes was showtime, but liking better the big sky
country east of the Cascades and far from the madding
crowd.
I'm over here in Algona, Iowa, shooting a WWII movie
about the German P0W camp that was here during the war.
True story.
About 10,000 prisoners went through this camp between
1944 and 1946.
The camp is still here as a museum.
The prisoners ended up saving the local economy by
harvesting the crops in the absence of American farm laborers,
who were off fighting the war.
As a tribute to the townspeople, who had treated them
very well--even paying wages for their labor--the prisoners
erected a shrine that still stands today.
The movie is titled "SILENT NIGHT IN ALGONA."
And I'm the sheriff. 🙂
spotted 10 MSC preposition ships offshore. There are only 17
total in three locations (Diego Garcia, the Mediterranean and
Saipan).These ships carry enough equipment, supplies and
ammunition to support a Marine Air-Ground Task Force for 30
days. Check out the little speck in the water above the
prominent iron wood tree. That's a semi-submerged U.S. WWII
I guess the play you were working on got lost in this [china
The movie sounds interesting; we visited the remains of a WW11
PoW camp on the Canadian side of Lake Superior. They were well
treated by the local community too, and they were involved in
the local economy too. I forget what percent of them decided
to remain in Canada at the end of the war. Hope to see the
Don't know how long you'll be there in Iowa; in my brief
been friends, close friends, all our lives. I'm not
comfortable yet saying "were friends," but that's why I'm
writing.
We're all losing more and more friends these days, and
of course each of those friends is special to us. What made
Charlie special to me and to our little gang of neighborhood
boys was the cheerful, passive charm he had about him. He
never asked to come along, but we never went anywhere without
first looking around to see if Charlie wanted to come. We were
drawn to him like that. There are children, I've since
learned, who are just like that--who through no deliberate
effort of their own, or even being aware of it, somehow become
everybody's favorite. The chosen one.
"Can Charlie come out and play?"
Remember how we used to say that?
I said that--we all said that--to Charlie's mom a
thousand times, growing up. He never came to our doors, we
always went to his. He had that gift.
"Can Charlie come out and play?"
Charlie Nevins. Never Charles. But sometimes Charles-A,
if his mom was calling him.
The A was for Audie, after the war hero/actor Audie
Murphy. But no hostile child's hand ever touched the brow of
our Charlie.
Years and years later, when be wrote me two letters from
Vietnam, from his bunk on a Navy Swift Boat, he signed them
"Charles-A".
But at our 35th reunion he was "Charlie" to everybody
again.
I got hold of him over in Beaverton a couple years ago,
and I'm glad I did.
Safe journey to you, old friend. We chose you and you
didn't disappoint. Not Ever.
This was a great week for my husband and I - we got our
success!
Yes! It was a great week for our family. I only wish my 44
they don't have any underlying health issues. I know of
quite a few Bomber alumni who have had the vaccine and
booster as well.
By golly! Today is Bruce SCHOENROCK's ('54) birthday. I think
I will wish him a "Happy Birthday!" and hope that he really
enjoys it.
Think it was mighty nice of Jim MEFFORD ('54) to send Maren
funds for a seat belt for her new chair. Hope the fund is
sufficient to include shoulder harness and floatation devices.
To conclude today's merriment let's all wish Treasure Elder
to the National Enquirer they are still married, which is good
news indeed.
We sure enjoyed his visit. Most of it was over Dinner and
Re: for 11/20 Sandstorm entry
I have always been a proud alum of Richland Bombers but today
I am bursting with pride. My almost 16 year old grandson, Zeke
GLENN ('25), just made the Bomber Freshman Basketball team
after tryouts ended yesterday. I probably only went to 10-15
games the whole time I was in Col Hi back in the early '60s-
sports wasn't my jam back then. Our son attended Richland but
didn't play organized sports so was never a Bomber athelete
but always a proud Bomber. Along comes this handsome 6'2"
young man who lives and breathes basketball and was so happy
to make the team. Phil NEILL ('66) and Jim CASTLEBERRY ('58)
are still coaching I understand, so know he will learn a lot
of good basketball technique and skills in the coming months
and years. Hubby and I have our golden old age free passes to
the games in our wallets and have loaded the schedule onto our
phones so we don't miss a thing. Maybe I'll see one or two of
you faithful Bomber supporters at the games this year. If you
see me, be sure to say hello! Go Bombers!
Just want to remind everyone in Class of '62, our 60th reunion
is scheduled for September 9, 10, 11, 2022. The committee has
been meeting and we will be sending out details in February
regarding costs, hotels info and plans for the weekend. We
have tried to reeach everyone we have addresses, emails or
phone numbers for. If you haven't heard from us, email me at
vkngblumom@aol.com and we will get you some info. You might
want to check your spam folder for a mailing we sent out
around September 20-25. We need as much current contact info
as you can provide-addresses, emails, phone... please!
Sitting here on a drippy grey and chilly morning in Richland.
Looks like a hot chocolate and oatmeal kind of day I'm
thinking. The cold air yesterday brought down the final leaves
on our big October Glory maple that was a gorgeous red beauty
the last couple of weeks. It's time to fire up the sewing
machine and get busy on Christmas jammies for the kiddos.
Might be a good day to go get my flu shot too. We got our
China virus boosters so hope folks are mindful of the
increased risks being indoors more and wear masks. Sure don't
want China Virus but don't want the flu either!!
Like most of the faithful readers of the Sandstorm, it's great
to have Maren back at the computer, sharing our stories and
keeping us connected. You are an angel Ms. Maren!! So glad
your recovery is coming along. Just keep control of that chair
and don't tip over... 🙂
Hoping all out in Bomberland have a wonderful Thanksgiving and
and joyous Christmas season. Wishing you peace.
Re: for 11/19 Sandstorm
Glad to have the Sandstorm back this morning [11/18/21]. Thank
you, Maren!
Yesterday (11/17/2021) was my granddaughter, Sydney JENKINS
('19), 21st birthday! She's working as an intern for Driveline
(a baseball training facility) in Kent, WA. She has just been
offered a position as a trainer at the Toronto Blue Jays
training facility in Florida. She'll head that way in January.
It was also the day that I had a pain blocking device inserted
in my back on a trial basis to help control my back pain.
I'll wear it until the 23rd when it will be removed and a
determination will be made to see if I am a candidate for a
permanent device to be implanted. In the meantime, I'm
limited on what I can do, but I have to try to be as mobile as
possible while adhering to the restrictions on movement. Right
now I hurt from all of the prodding the doctor did while
inserting the probes along my spinal cord, but it is no worse
that what I have been experiencing for some time now. I hope
this works, but I won't know for a few days.
Because of my procedure, her parents and I were unable to
celebrate with Sydney yesterday, but she had been home over
the weekend and we had her birthday dinner and cake then.
We had our first frost of the season yesterday and it looks a
bit frosty again this morning. My cat is trying to decide how
far off the back steps to venture into the yard. I'm going to
sit and drink my tea. Have a great day everyone!
Re: for 12/12 Sandstorm: Reindeer History
If you have never heard this story about Rudolph the Red Nose
reindeer please read and share with others. If you have read
this before, get yourself in the spirit of a child's Christmas
and enjoy.
As the holiday season of 1938 came to Chicago, Bob
May wasn't feeling much comfort or joy. A 34-year-
old ad writer for Montgomery Ward, May was
exhausted and nearly broke. His wife, Evelyn, was
bedridden, on the losing end of a two-year battle
with cancer. This left Bob to look after their
four-year old-daughter, Barbara.
One night, Barbara asked her father, "Why isn't my
mommy like everybody else's mommy?" As he
struggled to answer his daughter's question, Bob
remembered the pain of his own childhood. A small,
sickly boy, he was constantly picked on and called
names. But he wanted to give his daughter hope,
and show her that being different was nothing to
be ashamed of. More than that, he wanted her to
know that he loved her and would always take care
of her. So he began to spin a tale about a
reindeer with a bright red nose who found a
special place on Santa's team. Barbara loved the
story so much that she made her father tell it
every night before bedtime. As he did, it grew
more elaborate. Because he couldn't afford to buy
his daughter a gift for Christmas, Bob decided to
turn the story into a homemade picture book.
In early December, Bob's wife died. Though he was
heartbroken, he kept working on the book for his
daughter. A few days before Christmas, he
reluctantly attended a company party at Montgomery
Ward. His co-workers encouraged him to share the
story he'd written. After he read it, there was a
standing ovation. Everyone wanted copies of their
own. Montgomery Ward bought the rights to the book
from their debt-ridden employee. Over the next six
years, at Christmas, they gave away six million
copies of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer to
shoppers. Every major publishing house in the
country was making offers to obtain the book. In
an incredible display of good will, the head of
the department store returned all rights to Bob
May. Four years later, Rudolph had made him into a
millionaire. Now remarried with a growing family,
May felt blessed by his good fortune. But there
was more to come. His brother-in-law, a successful
songwriter named Johnny Marks, set the uplifting
story to music. The song was pitched to artists
from Bing Crosby on down. They all passed.
Finally, Marks approached Gene Autry. The cowboy
star had scored a holiday hit with "Here Comes
Santa Claus" a few years before. Like the others,
Autry wasn't impressed with the song about the
misfit reindeer. Marks begged him to give it a
second listen. Autry played it for his wife, Ina.
She was so touched by the line "They wouldn't let
poor Rudolph play in any reindeer games" that she
insisted her husband record the tune.
Within a few years, it had become the second best-
selling Christmas song ever, right behind "White
Christmas." Since then, Rudolph has come to life
in TV specials, cartoons, movies, toys, games,
coloring books, greeting cards and even a Ringling
Bros. circus act. The little red-nosed reindeer
dreamed up by Bob May and immortalized in song by
Johnny Marks has come to symbolize Christmas as
much as Santa Claus, evergreen trees and presents.
As the last line of the song says, "He'll go down
in history."
He'll go down in history
Re: That Time Again
It's that time again. Time to write an entry. I so enjoy
reading SS, but don't write much -- guess we all got used to
expecting everyone else to write entries..
Here in Westeern TN we continue to have all seasons -- often in
the same day. Temps in the 70s in December might feel good,
but it is a bad thing as has been demonstrated recently. Cold
air and warm moist air do not like each other.
My son and I plan to travel to my daughter's condo after
Christmas. She is off (a teacher) that week and my son managed
to get that week off also. Of course before that he will work 8
days -- 7 on afternoon and evening shift (including Christmas
eve and day). Almost had to change our plans as I got a jury
summons. Managed to get that put off til spring.
My church put on a live nativity last night -- didn't go (don't
like night driving), but saw pics. Was supposed to be Saturday
also, but that was rained out. One family has all the animals
we need.
I talk to my sister in Kennewick often. She is retiring soon.
Talk to my brother, David ('64), now and then.
Thanks Maren for your time and effort putting SS in our
inboxes. Hope to see one there soon.
Re: How Does Santa Do It?
(This sounds like something the Beauleau "boys" would have
worked our one rainy day the U-dub.)
There are two billion children in the world, but since Santa
doesn't service the Muslim, Hindu, Jewish, and Buddhist
children, that reduces the workload to fifteen percent of the
total. At an average census rate of 3.5 children per household,
that's 91.8 million homes. Santa has thirty-one hours of
Christmas to work with, thanks to the different time zones and
the rotation of the earth, assuming he travels east to west.
This works out to 822.6 visits per second. This is to say that
for each Christian household with good children, Santa has
1/1000th of a second to park, hop out of the sleigh, jump down
the chimney, fill the stockings, distribute the remaining
presents under the tree, eat whatever snacks have been left,
get back up the chimney, get back into the sleigh and move on
to the next house. This means that Santa's sleigh must be
moving at 650 miles per second, 3,000 times the speed of sound.
The payload on the sleigh adds another interesting element.
Assuming that each child gets nothing more than a medium-sized
lego set (2 pounds), the sleigh is carrying 321,300 tons, not
counting Santa, who is invariably described as overweight. Even
granting that "flying reindeer" could pull ten times their
normal amount, Santa would need 214,000 reindeer. This
increases the payload to 353,430 tons. 353,000 tons traveling
at 650 miles per second creates enormous air resistance. This
will heat the reindeer up in the same fashion as spacecrafts
re-entering the earth's atmosphere. The lead pair of reindeer
will absorb 14.3 quintillion joules of energy per second each.
In short, they will burst into flame almost instantaneously,
exposing the reindeer behind them, and create deafening sonic
booms in their wake. Santa, meanwhile, will be subjected to
centrifugal forces 15,500.06 times greater than gravity. A 250-
pound Santa would be pinned to the back of his sleigh by
4,314,015 pounds of force.
Notwithstanding these difficulties, Santa delivers all his
gaily wrapped presents every year making children happy.
I was so happy to see the 12/21 issue of the Sandstorm. So many
touching articles, especially Rex HUNT's ('53) about being able
to participate in his Masonic Lodge and have them accept his
program so well.
Also, Linda REINING's ('64) article about the Rudolph the Red
Nose Reindeer brought tears to my eyes. I had heard it before,
but it is a true Christmas feel good story.
Re: 1957 Spalding Evacuation
And Don' Sorenson's (NAB) photos of the '57 evacuation of
Spalding (I keep spelling it without a "u" and autocheck puts
it in. [I took the U out for ya Helen!! -Maren] I have fond
memories of Spalding and looked for someone I knew, when I
realized I was in Jr. High by then. But I was looking for me or
Barry STEVENS or Ricky HILL ('62), or Carlton Cadwell('62).
Memories of long ago. Which reminds me, no, I haven't heard of
Pearl DROTTS ('64) in a long time.
I missed the Sandstorm that said Maren needs 5 articles to
better, Maren.
Re: 1957 Spalding Evacuation
Thanks Don Sorenson (NAB) for the pics of the Spalding
Evacuation of 1957. I remember that event and I think that I
am in one of the photos. The pic with kids lined up for the bus
and the second from the left resembles me (I was tall for my
age; Mona STACK ('69) was the tallest in our class). The
teacher shepherding the kids onto the bus looks like Mrs.
Saunders, my first grade teacher.
I don't recall if it was part of this evacuation event or
separately but when I was in 1st grade at Spalding we did take
a bus trip up Rattlesnake Mt. We got to view the Nike missile
site and missiles that were located on Rattlesnake at the time.
Why take a bunch of kids to a secure missile base, I don't know
but we thought it was awesome.
[I remember doing that as well. -Maren]
cold nasty wet stuff. Now crushed ice I appreciate in my vodka
We are all settled in our retirement home (a 700 sq foot
wife has been wanting to down size for a long time!! That makes
us available to assist with two of our grand kids and yard (1.7
Re: "How does Santa do it?" (12-24-21)
Dale unpacks in fine detail the mathematics of Santa's
logistical problem, and even suggests that the calculation
"sounds like something the Beaulieu boys would have worked out
one rainy day [at] the U-Dub."
Beyond my depth, but thanks for the flattery (although it was
brothers John ('62) and Tom ('59) who excelled in the
sciences). Readers, please note that we and the Ennors lived on
opposite ends of the block on the south end of Douglass Street,
both in "H" houses. Mr. Ennor was even the scoutmaster for the
neighborhood patrol of Troop #38. I mention this adjacency
because Dale, in his fascinating essay, overlooks a different
kind of proof altogether, something less digital and more
anecdotal or even analogical (!)&
On the Christmas Eve of probably 1950, it snowed. The
logistical problems of Santa, especially with all those narrow
Richland chimneys, already lingered in the minds of we First
Graders (the elder Dale in Fourth!). In the morning, the
concrete evidence was clear and well noticed by all the littler
kids at the south end of the block. Running across all the
lawns was a clear path cut by the two runners of a sled! A
sled! The fat man's sled had left its tracks and he, his
footprints! Problem solved (but likely the early morning paper
boy). Dale, check the front lawn!
It was not until the Christmas of 1952 that the logistics
problem became most imposing and now unavoidable. Twin brother
John and I reasoned, however, that we could defer any
conclusions until after Christmas morning, that is until after
the loot was well in hand.
I recall how, before the Christmas break, my third-grade
teacher in Lewis & Clark Elementary, Mrs. Lester (three Col-Hi
daughters) carefully asked first for the hands of those who
awaited Santa, and then for the hands of those who did not. The
class was evenly split. And my hand went up half way on the
first question, and also half way on the second. Mrs. Lester
burst into laughter, but I stood my carefully ambiguous ground
for the reason given.
With decades of reflection now behind me, I conclude that-given
the choice between a random universe and its opposite-there
really is generosity at the source of all things, rather
not... rather than statistics and Quantum Mechanics alone. And, in
addition to the 3rd-century St. Nicolas who left his real
footprints it what is now Islamic Turkey, this too:
"Yes,
Virginia, there is a Santa Claus."
I attended Spalding for a very short period of time. Don't
remember if I got to partake of the drills there. I did at
Lewis and Clark, though.
School had already started a few days (or more) by the time we
moved to the address on Winslow. I was supposed to be in
Kindergarten. My mom dropped me off and I went to the office.
The person there told me what room to go to.
I walked down that long hallway by myself feeling really alone.
I remember standing in the doorway wondering what I was
supposed to do. I guess the teacher handled it well enough.
My memory stops at that point of looking into the class and
seeing all those students looking at me. They were already in
their seats in the middle of some sort of lesson.
It was a terrible feeling.
We moved again in December to the Adams address and I finished
KIndergarten at Lewis and Clark.
I don't recall boarding a bus to evacuate but that certainly
could have happened. I do remember there were evacuation routes
set up but don't think I ever took them. I do remember that we
occasionally went out into the main hall at Spalding and laid
on the floor against the wall with our hands over our necks.
That would surely have kept us safe!!!!
I want to take a minute to remember our middle sister Janice
"Beardsley, Moe" Detrick's heavenly 76th birthday on Wednesday,
December 29th. She always hated that her birthday was so close
to Christmas. She said Mom just took one of her Christmas
presents from under the tree and put birthday wrapping paper on
it. I'm sure Mom wouldn't do that but we didn't try to disabuse
Janice of that thought. Sure do miss that crazy, funny, loving
and infuriating sister.
Looking forward to joining with our classmates of Class of '62
