Re: Old buddy Ken HEMINGER's ('56) remarks.

It was the Kennewick Social Club up in the highlands spring of 1954:
if my faulty memory is working. I went several times because I met two
very cute Kennewick girls there (I know Kennewick girls!!) But they were
willing to dance with me!! Names were LaVelle Parratt, and Karen Minton.
I ended up marrying one of them and still stay in touch with both. I got
to visit with Ken in Montana on my way to my new life back east. I am all
settled now in Laurinburg, North Carolina and up to me knees in that cold
white stuff and low temperatures: I wasn't expecting that part.

-Grover SHEGRUD ('56), Not really used to retirement yet but working at it!!

Last September when I learned that the class of '56 was going to have a 65
year reunion after all. I quickly sent in my club 40 dues and a check for
dinner both Friday and Saturday. I wasn't fond of the hotel where it was
to be held so I called the Hampton Inn for reservations. The price they
quoted me for a river front room seemed high. The hotel agreed to reduce
it by fifty dollars per night if I agreed that it couldn't be cancelled. I
agreed and immediately called my friend and classmate Paul WEBSTER with
the good news. I told him how to get the reduced rate which he did. The
next day I called my brother Jim ('54) and said I would see him at club
40. He said "No you won't. It was canceled yesterday over some dispute
with the hotel." So I called Paul and told him that the reunion would be
much smaller than we thought. Paul and I got together Friday and met Jim
and his wife Jeanette, also class of 54, for dinner in Kennewick. Paul
hadn't been to Richland for years so Saturday morning we went sightseeing.
We saw the WSU campus and Hanford High. Then we drove through all the
businesses in Old North Richland and the areas as far as we could go. We
then got lost seeing all the development and vineyards in West Richland.
Then for the highlight of the reunion we met Lois and Larry HAROLD at
Anthony's for a wonderful visit over lunch and then to their house to
continue reliving old times. All in all I had a great time and I think the
same can be said for Paul and Lois and Larry. I hope next time more of the
class can join us.

Re: Kennewick Banquet Hall

I remember when Col-Hi back in the '60s, CW Brown and Norris Brown were
Tolo Kings. Everyone went to the banquet hall for the Tolo dance. They
would not admit CW and Norris because they were black. The entire class
turned around and left!

Re: High Spot and Kennewick Social Club

To: Ken HEMINGER ('56)

I never knew where Hi-Spot was and never went, nor did the gals I hung out
with, as far as I know. We had pizza sleepovers on the weekends. I used to
think it was in Kennewick, but I know now I was confused by the other one
(see below).

I think that Kennewick Social Club was the name of the more formal event
in Kennewick. Never went there either and don't know where it was. Maybe
the Country Club above the golf course?

Maren, welcome back to the Land of the Still Living! So glad to know that
you are getting better. My brothers and I are fine (Jeff DAWSON '62 and
Gaynor DAWSON '65).

P.S. Isn't it weird to turn 80? I used to tell my kids jokingly
that I was old. Since my recent birthday, it ain't so funny any
more. These days it's a badge of honor of sorts.

Re: Cheese Zombies

I don't remember Cheese Zombies in Richland. It was a toasted cheese
sandwich but my kids had what food service in Spokane and Ephrata called
a Zombie and it was a piece of bread with broiled bubbled cheese. If you
google Richland SD Cheese Zombie, Grandview and Yakima recipes show. Utube
has an original recipe according to them and they originated in CA.

Very cold but very sunny in Ephrata, WA where I'm dog sitting for my son
and wife while they travel to Mexico for 2 weeks. Sun and blue sky make it
seem warmer. Pretty tired of the snow I have in East Wenatchee. Haven't
seen my yard for almost 2 months without snow. It took 3 days with help
from 2 neighbors to dig out my driveway after a Jan 6 snowstorm and
getting 2 feet. Plenty of food in freezer but I started counting toilet
paper squares. Positive that spring is coming when I see sunset times and
minutes added each day.
