Last time I visited him (just before COVID) he was still in his West Richland home on the Yakima River flood plain. Mounted on the wall was his very own oar (about 9 or 10 feet long) from his rowing days at Stanford. Gaynor and Sheri moved a few months ago to WallaWalla to be with offspring, but still writes his refreshing cowboy poetry. Two small published volumes, plus others adding to the file. To: Dennis HAMMER ('64) NOTRE DAME: Regarding the restoration of Notre Dame de Paris (dating from 1182 A.D.)-In the 19th century (1845-64), an earlier restoration after centuries of neglect and deterioration (and deliberate revolutionary damage in 1789), by architect Viollet-le-Duc, still stuck with the original character and most details. Some of the statuary is new, plus the tower which, however, is still proportioned like the earlier one (that leaned and almost fell in 1792); his gargoyles are new, replacing those fallen through time; and the roof coloring is different. The documentary on the restoration today (following the 2019 fire) is authentic and not yet cheapened by the most recent agenda to "Disneyify" the Medieval interior into a contemporary light show. A disaster and a betrayal by the government's National Commission for Heritage and Architecture (CNPA). https://news.artnet.com/art-world/france-approved- notre-dame-revamp-plan-despite-protest-2047702 [Looks like one must log in to the site in order to read the article. -Maren] Re: ASIAN BUSES: Not quite like your bus in Thailand, but a word must be said about the "jitney" bus in the Philippines-like a Lego-toy pickup truck with an open canopy, all painted in a full variety of wild colors. In 1969 I and three others and the driver bounced along in one of these contraptions from the Subic Bay Naval Base, past the notorious dives of Olongapo City and into the interior, sharing a rutted road with water buffaloes. Finally arrived at a secluded native dwelling on stilts, surrounded by long piles of thousands of different kinds of seashells, all sorted by kind and color. The owner was a traditional diver-no gear except natural lungs, and yet able to stay under for up to five minutes, harvesting shells. Our mission and appointment was to claim a rare and enormous "man-eating" clam shell, each half weighing at least 100 pounds (some of these clams get up to four feet across, weighing 500 pounds). After several pot-hole delays, we arrived with barely ten minutes to spare. The next buyer in line who would have taken the find if we missed the 6:00 p.m. deadline. She arrived minutes later, not in a jitney, nor only one black limousine, but in two! It was Imelda Marcos from Manilla, the wife of President/dictator Marcos. We paid the price and drove off in the junker, leaving her and the entourage a bit upstaged and disappointed. The American flag was removed from the reclaimed Subic Bay Naval Base in 1992. -Pete BEAULIEU ('62) ~ Shoreline, WA ******************************************************** ******************************************************** >>From: Nancy MALLORY Johnson ('64) SENT: 5/23/22 Re: grads In my imagination (apparently) I thought I sent in an entry. Guess not. So here is one. Went (on Friday the 13th of May) to my niece's law school graduation. Wow! Still not sure what season we are in -- 90s for a few days then 60 or so. Plenty of rain. Would like to have some spring -- which we seem to keep skipping. Not ready for hot, humid weather -- yuk. Sure would like to come to the '64 event later this year, but is very unlikely. Maybe my brother, David ('64) will make it. He is not on social media. so he would need snail mail info. Will spend a weekend at my daughter's place to celebrate my grandson's B'day. Sure do enjoy the SS. Thanks Maren for all the work you do on it. -Nancy MALLORY Johnson ('64) ~ in West Tennessee ******************************************************** ******************************************************** END OF SANDSTORM ENTRIES.
