Re: Sandstorm!

It warms the cockles (what the hell are cockles?) of my heart to see the
Sandstorm more frequent than once a month. I know it is not because of my
diatribe, but it gladdens me to think it was so. So again we can reminisce
on gasoline being 28.9 cents a gallon and wages .75 an hour, if you could
get a job!

So! fly you junior birdmen, the ones with wings of tin, to insure you
receive your wings, be sure to send your box tops in!

The horizon is tomorrow, always there, but you never reach it!

-Rex HUNT ('53wb) ~ from beautiful Hanford, CA (only slightly uglier than
Old Handford Washington) Where the Cotton grows and pistachios
Reigns, the sun, always shining and it never rains. The men are lazy
the ladies questionable, to get a date , bring a can of dog food and
a high pitched whistle. Oh I have been banished (AGAIN) from
Facebook for 45 days! I have trouble speaking gibberish, so its
difficult to comply to their standards.

Here?s a ?twofer?:

7/14: Let?s wish fellow grad and classmate, Shirley STREGE (?54) a ?Happy
Birthday!?

7/15: Don?t forget the COLE twins Jackie and Judie (BOTH ?63) are having a
birthday.

SENT: 7/19/22

Lest I forget; today is Skippy?s (?54 R.I.P.) birthday.

I noticed in an issue a while back that someone lamented on the demise of
the Alumni Sandstorm. That ain?t true; it has just slowed down a bit. Now
if Maren were receiving 4 to 6 entries per day it would be back on a daily
basis. Apparently people got other things to do than write in.

SENT: 7/22/22

Gonna add another bit which, hopefully, will add to the overall entry
numbers. But only if you keep those cards and letters commn? in

So, it?s a ?Happy Birthday!? to fellow classmate Bill MURRY (?54). Way to
go!

Re: Class of '62 60 Year Reunion

We have emailed, snail mailed and/or called everyone on our roster in the
last three months and we haven't had the response we had hoped for. The
reunion for Class of '62 will be September 9-11, 2022 at the Riverfront
Holiday Inn (Formerly Red Lion, Hanford House, and Desert Inn) The cutoff
date for registrations is August 15 so we can firm up the numbers with the
hotel. We are currently at about 60 registered and are hoping for at least
100.

Information about cost $80 per person for Friday and Saturday and other
details including costs, special activities and hotels in the area are
listed on the '62 reunion page at:

	http://richlandbombers.1962.tripod.com/62in22.html

Our entertainment on Saturday night will be nationally known and Richland
raised (class of '74) comedian Brad UPTON.

If you have questions or need to have the flyer sent to you via email or
snail mail, please let me know. Hope we see you in September!!

To: Tim SMYTH (?62)

Re: Memory Lane

Of my entry on July 10, Tim SMYTH ('62) says "amen" and cites the trashing
of mascots as "just another example of woke culture." My GAWD, a prayer
posted on the censored internet, combined with a countercultural "woke"-up
call!

About my reference to Christmas murals on school bulletin boards, I made
the same report a few years back, and I recall mentioning a large scene
painted by yours truly, in the eighth grade (1957-8), to completely fill
the huge window above the main entrance to Chief Jo on Wilson Street
(Memory Lane!). It wasn't Michelangelo, but it was big. Consisted of five
vertical and parallel panels, each a little over three feet wide. Painted
on tough "oatmeal paper" and then coated with linseed oil, dried, to
render the masterpiece translucent like a stained-glass window. The
composition measured 16 feet x 16 feet (256 square feet). Twenty of these
would have covered the entire Sistine Ceiling with room to spare.

One Sandstorm reader then asked if I had a photo of the window display,
but I did not. But I have since found a snapshot and, such as it is, will
supply the link (below). The rest of the story was that less than one day
after the work had been hung, it came down.

What? It seems a citizen complained?the futuristic Atomic City: a half
century ahead of today?s woke and cancel culture!

After all, if we dismantle value-neutrality in public schools, who knows
what damage might follow? First, grade inflation, then term papers
downloaded from the internet, then drag queens in kindergarten classrooms,
and then who-knows what other unspeakable and tragic classroom
disruptions? In later years some cerebral misfits might even question
whether wall-to-wall STEM is the answer to all of their questions.

Can?t have any of that! Better to nip this old-fashioned values-thingy in
the bud. A real ?woke? up call. I don?t remember much resentment when the
blank window was met with my blank stare, although I might have wondered a
bit about the marionettes in the front office. I do remember being
prepared earlier for this learning curve? My sixth-grade teacher, the
widowed Mrs. Lester (World War II), always began each class day in Lewis &
Clark Elementary with all of us standing by our desks to recite together
(togetherness!) the Lord?s Prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance, probably
in that order. ?We?re doing this so if ?they? ever drag me away, down the
hall, you?ll know the reason why!?

As ?sailor-man? Steve McQueen said of his small-town mother, to missionary
teacher Candice Bergen in the movie ?Sand Pebbles:? ??a great dame.?

-Pete BEAULIEU ('62) ~ Shoreline, WA, recalling a glass wall less than
	 half full.
