FROM THE EDITOR; OK. here's the latest deal... It's my contacts now... I put
them in and it takes about 2 to 3 hours before everything is all hazy...
When everything turns hazy, that includes the computer screen and that's
when I get frustrated and turn the computer off... I went to the eye doc and
he said it was dry eye and told me what to get for it. Hmmmm...so far his
suggestion doesn't take care of the hazy so I'm back to 2 or 3 hours of non
hazy view of the world.

Maren,

Oh, so good to receive a Sandstorm. Still having health issues at 91, but am
able to get out of the house a little. Went to watch USC and UCLA women's
tennis teams at WSU indoor courts. Both teams are ranked in the top ten. Are
you still accepting money for the publication of the Sandstorm? If so, let
me know and the check will be in the mail.:)

Hope you are fully recovered from your bout with china virus.

Goodness, this has been an interesting month or so. But let me start with a
few days ago: I was delighted to see the bulb plants coming up. Not sure
which ones they are but I know they'll be lovely when they get around to
blooming. More delighting is the fact that Daffodils are almost ready to
bloom in the back yard where they get no sun whatsoever. Interesting to me.
Yesterday I planted some flower seeds for attracting bees and butterflies.
I'm late doing them but maybe they'll do well when they are ready to go
outside.

Last week my "lawn man" dug up the sod outside the fence on the east side of
my property. My "gardener" and I are using some of it to fill in spots where
my dog killed the grass with her pee. (I've had dogs all my life, large and
small, male and female and I have never had this problem before.) I am
presently buying Australian rocks that are supposed to modify her pee
through her drinking water. Not sure it's working but I hope it is. Will
know in a few weeks or so, maybe.

Wasn't that a great game: Gonzaga won in the last five minutes! Very
exciting.

About a month ago my niece Kathi, who has lived with me for about 3 years,
had a third stroke and returned from Physical Therapy last week, is in worse
condition than after her first two. Using a walker and wheelchair, she needs
a bit more help than I planned on. She is doing her best and is supposed to
have more therapy at Kadlec, but I haven't seen a schedule. I'm glad she is
signed up with Dial a Ride. Such a blessing for us. I can get the walker in
my car, but not the wheelchair.

I still play Bridge 3 half-days a week and Pinochle 3 half-days a week,
hosting a group for 2 tables of 5-handed each Thursday. I figure it is good
for my brain. I've noticed increased problems with my short term memory. I
take Prevagen for it. I don't think it is the "magic" medicine we hoped it
would be. I confided in my daughter Janet, and she told me "I have your
back!" One thing she showed me is the clock on my phone that I can set as a
reminder of what I'm doing. Burned a grilled cheese sandwich to a crisp the
other day because I didn't think I needed it for that but turned my
attention away for a minute.

The quote for doing a whole new roof was $30,000. Thankfully, my son Wes
will replace the shingles lost in several wind storms over the past few
years.

Life is GOOD.

Best regards to all. Stay safe out there,

Re: We need to thank Maren a lot more for the things we don't see!

Well I had a small cancer (smaller than a dime) from my left cheek.
Something that has been an annoyance for many years. (I spent way too many
years in the sun as a Land Surveyor) it was a small as a pencil eraser for
most of 25 years. Could not get a doctors concern to focus on it. Once they
started cutting out the tiny cancer, they followed the trail till I will now
have a 6 inch scar zigzagging (the mark of Zorro) from my left eye to below
the bottom of my left ear.

A real Pirate look. (Har me maties) gives my face character!

Stopped at Burger King for coffee this am. There were two blonde ladies in
line ahead of me! sort of resembled each other. one turned and I caught her
eye and I said Pardon me ma'am, but are you two ladies sisters? She sort of
giggled and said Oh No we aren't even Catholic!

Attached is something I came up with to help my great grand daughter (8th
grade) filling a school assignment.

     Love! by Rex Hunt

Love is such a nebulous Thing! Like a wisp of
smoke, you can see it from time to time but you
can never tie it down. It is not in any form a
solid or even a gas. A grand hallucination seen
     thru a kaleidoscope!

But you can feel it, at least from time to time.
Then it can slip away as if you were holding smoke
in your hand. It can be like the sweet melody of a
Meadow Lark, or lightening striking a can of
     gasoline.

A kiss from your 2 year old daughter, or a fist
from Mike Tyson or anywhere between! It can steal
into your heart on gossamer wings or the boots of
a storm trooper! Sometimes you don't even notice
that is has gripped your heart till something
shatters it like fine crystal against a concrete
     wall.

Love is obedience, it is rebellion. Love is
individualistic, Love is universal, love is all
encompassing, or narrow as a fine needle. There
are times you can feel love all around, times you
cannot feel it if it were a sledge hammer.

Don't ever believe any one who claims to know
what love is. Love is beyond knowledge. It is only
in feeling love that you can experience love. Then
you cannot explain what you are feeling. Love is
as open as the air yet as closed as a miser's
     wallet.

Love is debilitating, love is invigorating.
Unrequited love is as sour as bile, returned love
as sweet as nectar. Lost love can be crushing, new
love as light as a feather, Love is gracious,
tender, forgiving. But it can also be a prison
from which there is no escape. It can last
     forever, or fleeting as lightening.

There is no capturing it. It comes to you
willingly but only if you accept it as it is.

Re: Alma Mater "...of Columbia, fair Columbia"

Probably a year ago our Esteemed Editor, Maren the Great, took an interest
in some of my sketches. As a hobby, I used to reduce them down to note-card
size and gave sets away. Some parts of the civilized world still use stamps
instead of texting. Roundabout, someone from faraway sent to Sandstorm an
annual subscription wrapped inside such a card... So, the Question: Might I
post a few sketches of Richland?

But, what can one do with a totally flat military-era town populated with
scenic alphabet houses? And is it even possible to supplement Don Sorenson's
(NAB) vast photo contributions?

So, digging back, here at least are a few of the shoreline of our alma mater
Columbia River--as things still appeared back in the early 1960s. That is,
before the Corps of Engineers took a long look at the shoreline ecology and
saw that these pristine stompin' grounds were really only a cluttered
floodway. Bulldozers, not ducks! Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn and even Injun Joe
would have cried a flood over what's become of our own Ol' Man River. what's
become of our own Ol' Man River, cousin to he olde Mississippi of Paul
Robeson fame in "Riverboat" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eh9WayN7R-s

But, of those idyllic days, mostly, here are six views as captured by one
Bomber fortunate enough to spend a lot of free time bonding with the muddy
banks.

1. Wildlife near the now Leslie Groves Park boat launch.
2. The "fishing hole," between Park and Snyder streets
3. Flooded pasture, now tennis courts near the water treatment plant
4. Water's edge near the tennis courts, during autumn low flow
5. Today, the Queen of the West at Amon Park (Hannibal Missouri!)
6. Intake to the water treatment plant--a prized tourist destination!

Re: Spudnuts

I'm glad that the Spudnut Shop will continue. During junior high (late
1950's), I delivered the Spokesman Review to subscribers south of Uptown.
EARLY in the morning six days per week I rode my bike beyond the Spudnut
Shop to deliver to my few, widely-scattered customers. Riding home after my
deliveries were complete, I rewarded myself by splurging 25 cents of my
newly-earned wealth on a cup of hot chocolate and two cake donuts with
chocolate frosting. Spudnuts and EARLY paper deliveries are essential
Hometown memories.

Ed WOOD ('62) posted about his c. 1992 "Compaq luggable computer I used back
in the dark ages." That's about right, if the "dark ages" were in the early
1990's, then when we went to grade school it was the Jurassic age, or was it
the Cretaceous age? Anyway, we used to have to dodge dinosaurs going to and
from school. March 11 my daughter and I went to Pendleton and back and I saw
a surviving Brontosaurus. The photo is not too great, position and light and
shadows were wrong and we were limited by the angles where we could take a
photo. I think he might be related to the Jolly Green Giant. You will notice
that he has concrete around his feet. I am guessing that some Stegosaurus
got mad at him and put out a hit on him so the T-Rex mob fitted him for some
cement shoes and were going to throw him into the Le Brea Tar Pit, but he
got away.

Re: All Bomber Lunch

Where are all my friends who begged us to start the All Bomber Lunches
again? We have had 3 including March since Jan of 2023 and the turnout has
been most disappointing. Jan there were 2 others besides me and the last 2
including March I have been by myself. I know why 1 of the regulars hasn't
been attending and she hopes to next month but everyone else who was coming
prior to china virus in 2020 I have no clue if something has happened to
them or not. Please come to our next one, the 2nd Saturday in April at noon
at Lil' Moon Diner.

And as I work on this issue, it's 4/8 -- lunch RIGHT NOW!! -Maren
