Saturday, the 17th at 2:30pm NEW HOME ADDRESS: Maren Smyth 144 Briant Street Gretna, LA 70056 ******************************************************** >>From: Marilyn "Em" DeVINE ('52) SENT: 5/1/23 Greetings to all you Richland Bombers out there! Summer finally got here. Of all days, Saturday was 90 and with no time to get acclimated, my son, Wes Rawlings, was up on my roof for MANY hours repairing it! Yikes. He did take a break for lunch but it was a long hot day for him. I am so grateful! The estimate to replace the roof was an astonishing $30,000!! I am enjoying my yard work. Getting rid of the "snake grass" is impossible. Any ideas??? It is even more tenacious than the Dandelions. My companion, Terry SHEGRUD ('56) is doing ok but will have some kind of surgery on his left eye. The macula (if that's what it is called) has a black spot on the upper part. Dr. will move it a ways so Terry's vision will be better. Meanwhile, he got glasses today and that will help a lot, I'm sure. I have to admit I've been nagging at him to get glasses for well over a year. I hope all of you are doing well, physically, mentally, spiritually and financially. Best Bomber regards, -Marilyn "Em" DeVINE ('52) ~ in lovely Richland, WA, where it cooled down as soon as Wes got the roof finished and the flowers and trees are blooming nicely ******************************************************** ******************************************************** >>From: Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) SENT: 5/29/23 For 5/29: Hats off, three cheers and a "Happy Birthday!" to Larry HARROLD ('56). Think he deserves it. SENT: 5/20/23 For 5/20: Gonnies! Is it time to do it again. If the Bomber Calendar is correct, this is the day we wish Allen AVERY ('54) a "Happy Birthday!" As Jean-Luc would say: "Make it so." SENT: 5/17/23 For 5/17: If you should happen to see him; please take a moment to wish Garth WHEELER ("54) a "Happy Birthday!" Do be careful and don't startle him when you do. Silverton, OR, where this Saturday (20th) is "Pet Day" complete with a parade. -Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) ~ Silverton, OR ******************************************************** ******************************************************** >>From: John BROWNE ('61) Hi, Maren: Class of '61 has experienced another transition. Our webmaster & techno-wizard Jim YOUNT passed away, in Sequim, last weekend. During the conversations we had in these last few years I learned that the town of Yountville in Sonoma County(?) California was named for an ancestor? & that one of his great-great uncles was the first Park manager of Yellowstone. (I had found a picture of that dude, taken on a ridge in the Rockies at the turn of a century, and Jim identified him for me.) I guess that he was fed up with the "brain fog" that accompanied his medications, & so he quit- cold turkey- a few weeks earlier? & according to another classmate, he was delighted that his brain was AWAKE again. (He had hoped for ONE MORE DAY with a clear mind.. & got 19 of them!) Okay! sun's out, so it's back to the garden for me. ^..^ -John BROWNE ('61) ~ on Vashon Island Peace... the affordable alternative ******************************************************** ******************************************************** >>From: Pete BEAULIEU ('62) SENT: 4/21/23 To: Rex HUNT ('53) Re: Glimpses of "Our Town" Richland A kind thank you to elder statesman Rex HUNT, '53, and his artful, hunter- gatherer petroglyph testimonial from shortly after the last Ice Age!? But, about different KINDS of "artists," there's this from American painter Robert Henri (d. 1929): "the artist is alive in any person, whatever his kind of work may be [?.] He does not have to be a painter or sculptor to be an artist. He can work in any medium. He simply has to find the gain in the work itself, not outside it. "I have met masters now and again, some in studios, others anywhere, working on a railroad, running a boat, playing a game, selling things. Masters of such as they had. They are wonderful people to meet. Have you never felt yourself "in the presence" when with a carpenter or a gardener? When they are the right kind, they do not say "I am only a carpenter or a gardener, therefore not much can be expected of me." They say or they seem to say, "I am a Carpenter!" These are masters, what more could anyone be!? ("The Art Spirit," 1923/1960). Here are my few sketches, of Richland, itself. Maybe not the alabaster-city- on-a-hill, but it's still "Our Town." YE OLDE TREE: From before 1944 and north of the central fire station on GWWay until at least 1976, this sentinel of the former years. A reminder of the bucolic daze before pavement and plutonium. Survivor of droughts and sandstorms, but not the stump chipper; now beneath the patio of Homewood Suites. The FEDERAL BUILDING: A June 2020 visit just before the rainstorm. Here's where I dropped my antique hunting knife used for sharpening pencils, right there in the south yard of the police station. Probably raised some eyebrows. COL HI: the original (1912) held down the southwest corner of old Lewis & Clark Elementary School (1938, dedicated in 1939). Today, west of Ellensburg, take a side trip off of I-90 to see a L & C duplicate brick and white wooden trim school in time-vault Thorp (population 109). A village as proud of its historic FLOUR MILL (1885) as boom-town Richland is of our B- Reactor (1944). The original Col Hi was abandoned in 1943. During K through 6, L & C kiddos walked past it every day wondering what neat stuff might be found if we ever broke in for a look-see. The replacement began to come down during the Class of '62 senior year. JIM HOUSE MEMORIAL. https://www.tri-cityherald.com/sports/high-school/prep- basketball/article204042249.html [must have a PAID account to see this] One summer (1965?) yours truly ('62) was Shanghai-ed to fill out two full teams for a summer pickup game. As a non-entity, I found myself leaning against the House ('63-RIP) to his great amusement. But, was teamed up with the (a one- time appearance?) legendary Norris BROWN ('57). Both "artists" on the same floor, at the same time! HIGH SCHOOL DESIGN: Before Hanford K-12/High School was built, a UW architecture conceptual ground plan, by yours truly, at a close-in location (now the north end Safeway shopping center). The complex is integrated around a balanced Liberal Arts/STEM Info Center (both). And the left-over spaces between the buildings are pumped up as equal parts of an overall composition: more "symphonic" (?architecture is frozen music,? Goethe). And so, more of a student-community and sense of "place" in our big-sky flatlands. The RICHLAND THEATER: In 1951 the Technicolor (!) movie "King Solomon?s Mines" came to town. The family Friday-night theater outing was blocked by an overflow crowd (they still come!). Had to wait a full week to ogle all those stampedes and the head-swingin' and jumpin' war dance (art!) of those 7-foot Zulus. Today they're stars in the NBA (another art!), and at the Theater the crowds (all "artists"!) still come. Back to OL' MAN RIVER: The not-quite-art DAWSON dock (Stephanie '60, Jeff '62, Gaynor '65) pulled to high ground during flood stage (the summer of 1964). Downstream on the horizon, the Horse Heaven Hills where mustangs still roam free. http://alumnisandstorm.com/Xtra/Bea/0.htm -Pete BEAULIEU ('62) ~ Shoreline, WA where the single-family property tax goin' through the roof alongside the assessed value of upstart apartments and condos. ******************************************************** ******************************************************** >>From: Tim SMYTH ('62) NOTE FROM THE EDITOR. I am curious about what some other ranch house denizens might recall on this subject. There was a ladder built in to the wall with an incredibly heavy and unsecured trap door above it to gain access. It was full of old tvs Christmas stuff and so on and I used to sneak up there to hang out maybe smoke a cigarette sneak a beer. Illumination was a bare light bulb which always seemed to have some dripped sap from the rafters melting on it giving out a great scent. On one occasion I lost control of that door and it brained me on the way down the ladder. Haven't been the same since. -Marc LEACH ('63) ******************************************************** ******************************************************** >>From: Nancy MALLORY Johnson ('64) SENT: 5/31/23 Summer is here. We've had temps on up there (plus humidity) and lately some really nice days. Just spent some time with my daughter and family and my son. We had a great visit! Had some meals, went to church -- even had a picnic. Also had my grandson's B'day -- #14. Don't get to spend time with all of us together very often. My brother, David ('64), is settling in to his new apartment. Karen ('71), our sister has been helping him with this move. I think he is mostly healed from the broken hip. Hope everyone is set to enjoy summer -Nancy MALLORY Johnson ('64) ~ in West Tennessee ******************************************************** ******************************************************** >>From: Patti McLAUGHLIN ('65) SENT: 6/9/23 Re: Hacked PLEASE would you put in a Sandstorm that I do not use Facebook. I cannot get onto Facebook because I do not remember my password from 35 years ago; so I cannot get my name off of it. I hate everything about Facebook. And I am NOT posting all these weird notices that purport to be from me. I am not selling puppies; I am not looking for a ride anywhere (I am the designated driver for everyone I know). Did I give you (I think I did) my new email? patricia.cleavenger1@gmail.com (don't miss the number 1) THANK YOU! -Patti McLAUGHLIN ('65) ******************************************************** ******************************************************** >>From: Betti AVANT ('69) Re: All Bomber lunch Until further notice I've decided to cancel the All Bomber lunches. There was a lot of interest in restarting them so the first one was set up for January, 2023. There were 3 of us there and I thought hey it's a start. The last 3 months I've been the only 1 in attendance. I found out the nice lady waiting on me is the co-owner of the diner and actually spoke to her husband today as well. If you are interested please let me know at least a few days prior to the next one (if we have one) so I can make arrangements for the table(s) we will need. It is set for the 2nd Saturday of the month at noon at Lil' Moon Diner (formerly JD Diner) on VanGiesen in WestRichland. It's hard talking about Bomber memories and days gone by with oneself. -Betti AVANT ('69) ~ Richland ******************************************************** ******************************************************** >>From: Don Sorenson (NAB) SENT: 4/1/23 Re: http://alumnisandstorm.com/Xtra/Sor/230614-tag_00.htm To: All Bombers One of my guilty pleasures is going to estate / yard sales looking for various items to use and the occasional Hanford related item. Last week I was reviewing photos of a sale in Benton City and noticed a blank H E W property tag. Now I've seen hundreds and hundreds of tags with numbers engraved but never seen a blank one, however it wasn't completely blank. On the opposite side the name Carolyn Jo Noake address 303 Cullen. Who might this be and how did she come to have her name scribed into it. Did an admirer scribe or did she work in the inventory department?? Wonder wonder. See attached. -Don L.
