Phil Raekes was indeed our proud and loving patriarch, and his loss is a profound one for our family. He was a self-made man, our dad. He endured struggles, but was full of grit and determined to make a life for himself. He was so witty! He taught us right from wrong and the importance of family. We love and miss him beyond words. While the grief is deep, we land on immense gratitude. We were truly blessed to have Phil and Mary Raekes as our loving parents for as long as we did. ❤️ ❤️ Thank you for all of the love and support! Grief has no rules, and we appreciate that so many of your hearts see ours. Our parents had a long and meaningful life, but life is still way too short, so make it matter and love each other! -- Cheers, -Richard ROBERTS ('49) ~ "Life isn't about how to survive the storm, but how to dance in the rain" 805-202-8047 ******************************************************** ******************************************************** >>From: Rex HUNT ('53) 2/9/24: Re: Addendum 1, Volume 2 Well of course Dr. Duh had been given a list of my pills and potions that I take beforehand. B - U - T no one bothered to read that list! So when I repeated that list to Nurse Hatchet, She immediately began verbally to beat me about the head and shoulders. Now I had been told just 7 days prior to continue my med regimen. Only they forgot that among my meds I had recently been prescribed Eliquis, a harmlessly sounding med. Except you never never never take just before, during nor for like 2 weeks after a heart procedure. I was then shoved back into my assigned broom closet and told to put my pants on and go home. Only By now my son was off running errands for me. Of course it is raining and My son was now a half a cart from finishing shopping at Costco. I had given him my cell phone to hold till I was returned to my recovery room. The hospital staff is unhappy at me for taking up a needed bed for those who had or were having surgery that day. SOOOooooo some time in the future I get to do this all again. Reminds me of school times during WWII and air raid practice, where they use to scare us kids to death, only to laugh and say Hey! can't you take a joke! From Lovely Downtown Hanford Ca. where my son is loading up to return home and doing a lot of mumbling under his breath. Hanford, a place where if you don't make a mistake, then you are doing it wrong! Rex Hunt (53wb) 12/31/23: That is the consensus of my other 3 doctors and the emergency room at the hospital. Alas, there doesn't seem to be a cardiologist in office between Dec. 20 and January 4th! sO PLEASE DON'T HAVE A HEART ATTACK TILL JAN. 5TH Some things are looking up. Wait--- when you are lying on your back, everything is looking up. But I did get a phone call from my "In home caretaker". She plans to come to work on January 3rd. Have not seen her since Dec 23rd. Claims to be sick. People have told me, that I am sick my whole life! May the year 2024, see all your desires be worth striving for and all your dreams be in color! 1/17: So Doctor Fumblethumbs tells me I am in need of another open heart surgery: minor detail! He doesn't think I would survive! Not sure if he was referring to my condition, or his ability! Oh forgot to wish my canine friends a merry holiday. So to all you dogs, Fleas Navidad! Rex Hunt: (53wb) I have found a way to help me to eat less, especially at my evening meal. Seems a great way to have a diet. Eat a Hamburger 30 minutes before dinner time. From lovely downtown Hanford, ca. ( Where, if ugly were a virtue, we would rate most righteous.) home of the visually unpleasant and partially bald. 1/15: So a whole lot of noise and not much was done. Doctor Stumblethumbs did some minor repair to my pacemaker. It will have to be changed out in near future. I think they did not replace it now, is so I can pay for another 15 day vacation to Hawaii for doc and family. They are still going to try to mend a broken Heart, some time in the future. But at the same time, they say it is too late, that my aortic valve is calcified enough to prevent a successful job. So again, I can pay for a trip to Bali, Rex in lovely Downtown Hanford Ca. where a date can be had with a can of dog food and a high pitched whistle. 1/10/24 So I am home again after getting the alarm on my pacemaker reset, but found they will have to physically move my "Vena Cava" vein as my cancer is encroaching. This before the Claw tried to repair my Aortic valve. Which 3 docs now tell me is of utmost importance. Whether for my benefit or to pay for a trip to the Bahamas. I am never sure. But from the price tag he plans on taking a plane of 21 year olds beauties with him. And he just returned from 22 days in Hawaii. must be damn nice to be a cardiologist at 36 years old. My pacemaker will need to be replaced with in 3 months as there are some "frayed" wiring. I don't know how they can see that. But I was hooked to a computer for two days so maybe it just made a decision. to do something rather than do nothing. Nothing does not pay very well. Looking forward to next issue already. catch you on the flip flop Rex Okay.. here it is 8 PM I was released from hospital at 6:45; Hell of a time cut folks loose. To cold for me outside, nothing worth having to eat. The found the cause for my pacemaker to beep. Seems one of the LEADS is frayed and loose. They did a bandaid type cure for now. But I will need to get it replaced hopefully within 3 months. also the surgery they tried a year ago that put me in Bakersfield, still needs to be done. Only more so. as the rim of the heart valve is starting to "Calcify. I am now 90% house bound. My heart is not pumping enough blood to spread the oxygen fast enough to keep me from gasping like a fish on the dock. Walking to my kitchen leaves me breathless. My full time caretaker is trying to cut her hours so she can babysit her granddaughter afternoons. She is 5 and her mom works. I need someone to take me down to the creek and beat me on a rock. Screw it I am ordering Chinese. Hungry enough to gnaw thru a raw acorn squash. laying here looking at the ceiling, I realized; Women have more fun lying on their back! Just a random thought! So trill next time, this is Jack the all american boy coming to you from station waco or is that wacko home of the mexican tostato and watered down cerveza! -Rex HUNT ('53wb) ~ Hanford, CA ******************************************************** ******************************************************** >>From: Jimmie MEFFORD ('54) Re: Jeanette DUNCAN Mefford ('54-RIP) Jeanette passed away on i/5/2024. Leslie died on January 17th of this year; she suffered for many years from a number of ailments, many of which we suspected were related to her exposure, in 1949, during the Green Run. I would like to see if I could find her in any of the early school class pictures on the Bombers web site but, unfortunately, her name does not appear on any of them and I really have no idea which school she would have attended. Can anyone out there help me with this? Our last home in Richland was on Jadwin Drive, literally just around the corner from Chief Joseph HS, and a year or two before moving there we were living at 1315 Cottonwood Drive. Do you have any idea which elementary school(s) she would have attended when living at either of these addresses? I doubt that anyone reading this would remember her from so long ago but, if you do, please feel free to drop me a message! Thank you for any help you might be able to provide. -Fred AMES ('60, if we had remained)) ******************************************************** ******************************************************** >>From: Ed WOOD ('62) Re: Never too old to make a difference As some of you may recall, our son Brian (33) was killed by drug-impaired drivers (yes, plural - two at the wheel of one vehicle) in 2010. That launched my retirement career as an activist to combat the scourge of drug- impaired driving. Every time I "retire" from this activity, a new thought occurs to me and I reinsert myself into the campaign. My latest manuscript was published by a highly-respected peer-review journal Jan 4, 2024. I'm hoping this will make an impact and will dissuade states from adopting the scientifically-invalid 5 ng/mL per se limit for marijuana's THC as Washington, Montana and Illinois have done. I don't expect very few to read this, but those who do might make a difference. My wife Janice (NAB) fell down the stairs at home and broke her back last September. She was graced with the addition of two rods and 14 screws in her spine as a result of this misadventure. It turns out this is a very serious surgery with a 6-12 month recovery time. She's getting through it painfully, but as a result we've been delayed in going to our Tucson winter hideout until later this week. We're both looking forward to it. -Ed WOOD ('62) ~ Littleton, CO ******************************************************** ******************************************************** >>From: Phyllis CUNNINGHAM Coates ('64) Re: Richland Rollarena 70th Anniversary Celebration Sunday, February 18th, the Richland Rollarena will be having an open house from 1-9 pm.
