UPDAtE FROM MAREN: I honestly did not realiize how my vision had gone so
far downhill. Pehaps because the decline was so slow? ANYWAY, my cataract
surgeon lasered the cloudiness off the cataract lens that he installed in
2019 and now my vision is back to 20/20. It's a whole new world again. Now
that I can SEE the computer screen, it's pleasant to sit at the computer
again.
I'm a Firefox (browser) and Thunderbird (email) user and now that I
can SEE, I've realized that they "updated" both of those programs. Now I
can't seem to get into the address book. Why do they DO that? Just to make
things difficult for us all.

Hello Bombers! I was happy and somewhat surprised to find a Sandstorm in my
Laptop a week or so ago. Sorry to read about your vision problems, Maren,
and sorry it is taking so long to get it taken care of.

Bomber news from this house: Grover SHEGRUD ('56) and his wife, Martha,
arrived last week on their way to move back to the Northwest after about 3
1/2 years in North Carolina. (So glad they were away in time to miss the
latest hurricane!) We got to visit with them and their grandson 2 summers
ago when we were in Maryland visiting one of my grandsons and his family.
Among other things, we went to the Smithsonian Flight Museum. Fun time.

This afternoon I have an appointment with a Joe Webb at Tri City
Orthopedics. I'm thinking he probably is a grandson of fellow 1952
classmate, Joe WEBB.

We've had some hot, hot weather this summer and as I recall, August is the
hottest month of the year, but this August is unbelievably cool. High Temp
today and thru most of the week, in the 70s. For the first time in many
months, this morning, I walked with Terry SHEGRUD (about '54 or '55) and the
dogs. (We took the "short walk" in deference to my hips) and it was very
pleasant. I've never been much of a farmer but this year I have tomatoes,
green beans, peppers and some kind of squash that look like cantaloupe. I
should know for sure in a week or so. I have help in the yard this year,
besides the guy who mows. Terrie and Linda do lots of weeding. I do some,
but even the 3 of us can't keep up with the darn things. Next week I'll
start having help with the house work too. Terry and I will likely go to the
BenFranklin Fair and Rodeo this afternoon!

Best Bomber regards to each and all,
-Marilyn "Em" DeVINE ('52) ~ in Richland, south of the Yakima River.

Re: From the Waist Down

One of my favorite gifts was a Brownie Box Camera. Born in 1935 to frugal
parents, I was told to choose my shots carefully. What a thrill it was to
see what developed.

My parents also encouraged me to write. I liked to make rhymes. Here is one
I wrote in 2011.

FROM THE WAIST DOWN
By Norma Boswell,

I['ve snapped many photos since I was pre-teen,
from killdeer on ground nest to Frontier Days queen.
My Brownie Box cam'ra shot roses and more,
saved many fine senses and started my store.
Zoo['s lithe polar bear, wrinkled elephant nose,
monkeys swinging on vines; I recorded each pose.
Those animals, easy. Most people, no trial.
But there was one subject I couldn['t make smile.
My prim Witter grandma just set her lips straight,
and said, "Get it over." I pled her to wait.
Then Mom brushed Gram['s hair. Her coil was too tight.
White shiny hair glistened. The light was just right.
I wanted a close-up, but spoke like a clown.
"Grandma, I will shoot you - - just from the waist down."
She knew I['d misspoken, an artless beguile,
responded with humor, and I caught her smile.

Love to all,
-Norma LOESCHER Boswell ('53) ~ Richland

Thanks to Maren and Joe CAMPBELL ('67)!

So happy to see our beloved Sandstorm is alive again!

I promise to do my part in keeping it active with entries!

June, 2024 was anniversary of our 70th year graduation. I have had requests
from classmates to do something to celebrate. So.. I am putting this out
there to see who from class of '54 has an interest in getting together, if
even just a lunch or early dinner. If you want to come to Richland sometime
in September, please send me an email and I will let you know when and where
we'll meet. Specify what weekend or weekday is best for you.

Counting the classmates who are local or in Spokane, we have about 8
interested, so it's never too small to have a gathering! ??

My hearts go out to the families and friends of dear classmates we've lost,
Shirley STREGE Bigelow, Jeanette DUNCAN Mefford, Velma McCORD and John
SCOGGINS, this year. And those who are suffering and being taken care of
with dementia or other illnesses. Joanie PHILLIPS Wile, Dona McCLEARY Belt,
Betty RUSSELL Kent, Lloyd KENT and whoever else is ill, I love you! ❤️

Look forward to hearing from lots of you!

For 10/13

It would be unseemly if I let the day pass without wishing Charlie RAEDER
('54) a "Happy Birthday!". So, there it is.

For 10/5

A "Happy Birthday!" to fellow classmates Jan BONDURANT and Regina WILLIAMS
(both '54). Let the celebration begin.

For 9/30

The Bomber calendar informs me that I should wish Millie BRESINA ('54) a
"Happy Birthday!" today. I know, tomorrow would be too late. Now that she's
turned 21, it is still advisable to stay away from certain adult watering
holes.

For 9/28

Before the sun sets today, I'd best wish fellow classmate Marilyn GULLEY
('54) a "Happy Birthday!"

For 9/21

A "Happy Birthday!" to Treasure ELDER ('54) on what must be her 22nd.

For 7/28

A "Happy Birthday!" to fellow classmate Dixie TROUT ('54)

For 8/19

Thought I might wish Lois WEYERTS ('56) a "Happy Birthday!" because the
calendar says so.

For 8/16

A "Happy Birthday!" to trombonist and fellow classmate John BRUNTLETT ('54).
Don't let the fact that Elvis supposedly died on this day confuse the issue
or lessen the joy.

Yesterday 8/13/24, I had a wonderful lunch with classmate Ed WOOD ('62) here
in Denver. Ed and I go back to Spalding kindergarten, so 75 years. We had a
great time reminiscing and talking about our great childhood in Richland. We
agreed that we had a very classy group of females in our class and I have
enjoyed reconnecting with some of them, as well as the guys, at our class of
'62 reunions, I forgot to get a photo of Ed and myself.

I am here from New York in Denver visiting my sister Edna (NAB) and brother
Ed (NAB). Ed is battling cancer, Multiple Myeloma. He is lucky to have the
Univ of Colorado Health Care Team close by helping him try to navigate this
terrible disease. I went to his appointment Monday and I can fly back to NY
today confidently knowing that he has an awesome support team. Maren and I
have have four younger sisters, Tere ('65wb), Julie ('69wb), Edna ('71wb)
and Barbara ('73wb), especially Tere, who has also come here to Denver to
support our baby brother on his journey. Of course, Edna provides a very
comfortable home here in Westminster, CO for Ed to live.

Hats off to my great Smyth family. I love them all. We are separated by
miles, but we all love and support each other.

>>From: Marie RUPPERT Hartman ('63)

I will be leaving Richland early in August to move to Jamestown, ND. Since
I['m the last surviving Ruppert and Hartman (by marriage) it will be the end
of an era that started in the late 1800s. My husband['s (Lance Hartman ['60-
RIP) family were one of the original families to settle in what became
Benton City. My grandfather, John Phillip Ruppert purchased land on what is
now Ruppert road in the early 1900s. He gave that land to my father, Bernard
L. Ruppert, after WWII to create a farm where we Ruppert (6 kids) grew up
and started school in Benton City. We moved into Richland in the mid-1950s
when my mother developed cancer and we had to move closer to her doctors.
The first 4 of us are Bombers (me ['63, Gene ['65, Joanne ['66, and John, 67.)
Momma died in 1962 and in 1967 my father moved to Renton so Kathy and Rainy
graduated there. Lance and I reconnected when he came home from Viet Nam in
1966 and married that December. His mother was my first-grade teacher in
Benton City. Lance was career Navy and after 26-1/2 years he retired and
went to work at Bangor Subbase. We lived in Bremerton until 2004 when he
finally retired and we moved back to Richland to be close to our daughter,
Christy, son-in-law, Allen Jenkins (now a retired Richland and West Richland
police officer) and our grand kids, Cameron ['16 and Sydney ['19. We attended
many of the grandkid['s various games and activities and reconnected with
many of our Bomber families.

Since there are now none of my immediate family close by, I have decided it
is time to go where my daughter, son-in law, grandson Cameron, his wife and
my new granddaughter, Martha have decided to put down roots. Cameron played
baseball at the University of Jamestown and he and Martha graduated from
there in 2021. Sydney attended Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas and
graduated from there in 2021 also. Since Sydney is gone now, my move to
North Dakota to be with them makes the most sense.

So, with many mixed feelings on this decision, I am in the process of
packing up and selling my house. Downsizing isn['t easy and I know I['m moving
more than I will use, but I['d rather have something I want rather than wish
I had brought it ? so I will get rid of the excess there.

I hope the Sandstorm continues so I can keep up with the Bomber Nation. Glad
to hear the Maren['s eyesight can be improved.

>>From: Linda REINING ('64)

Glad to see the Sandstorm is back to normal. have missed it, although, I
will admit, I have been just as lax/lazy as others in not writing in. I
think too many of us have been using FB as a way to keep in touch, but I
definitely would miss the Sandstorm if it were no longer around.

Life has dealt some of us a few things that we've found VERY hard to deal
with, but we will survive, we are Bombers, after all. *grin* the pain of
losing a child(even though she was an adult, in her mid 50s, she was still
my child) is the hardest thing I've ever had to go through---parents are not
supposed to bury their children, just not the way things are supposed to
happen.

My life is also going in a direction that I never thought I'd be dealing
with, at this stage of my life---78 is too damn old to uproot and move,
across country, but that's exactly what is happening---my son-in-law has
decided that he's not getting any younger and it's time for him to be closer
to his folks, so by the time this is published, we will have moved to MO (or
as I like to call it, "Misery"), have never been there, but I am not a fan
of living in "tornado country"! my oldest daughter keeps reminding me that
I survived living in "earthquake country" (CA), so I'll survive "tornado
country", but I keep telling her at least with the earthquakes I didn't have
to worry about a wind taking my house up in the air!

Maren, glad you are "on the mend" and that your eyesight will be improved.
SO glad that the Sandstorm will continue.

Re: so glad to see the Sandstorm!

Maren, I had the laser treatment on one eye. No big deal. Takes a couple of
seconds -- after the check in and wait! Should we send $$$'s for the SS?

It's been HOT!!! here. Need to go outside and do some stuff, but too hot for
me.

School is starting around here. We never started till around Labor Day which
would be better as August is a hot month.

The '64 reunion is coming up. Wish I could be there. Brother David ('64) Is
interested I know, but he is not on social media nor does he have a
computer. He also does not drive.

[We should be able to let David know when the '64 reunion is
(if it hasn't already happened. Maybe he can Uber there. -Maren]

Stay cool everyone!
