JAMES A. "JIM" THOMPSON ~ Honorary Class of 1964

Jim Thompson, 65, of Goldendale, WA, and former longtime Sunnyside resident and businessman passed away on February 14, 2011, at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle, WA. He was born on July 25, 1945, in Richmond, WV, the son of James O. and Leana Hemmings Thompson. At an early age Jim, with his family, moved to Richland, where he received his education.
At the age of 17 Jim enlisted and served in the U.S. Army. Following his military discharge, Jim returned to Richland where he later married Marie Whitlock on Februry 15, 1975.
While living in Richland, Jim began his career with the United Telephone Company, retiring in 1993.
The Thompson family moved to Sunnyside, WA, where they farmed asparagus, owned and operated J. and M. Janitorial Service, Sales Yard Cafe, and Marie's Country Kitchen. They also owned and operated the Homestead Restaurant in Goldendale and currently own and operate Marie's Sod Buster in Goldendale.
Jim loved to fish, especially at Fish Trap Lake. He also enjoyed car racing and a little gambling.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marie; daughter Sonya Anderson and husband, Jeff; three grandchildren: Ashley, Jakob, and Darick James. He is also survived by three nephews, Corey, Shane, and Troy; his sister-in-law, Diane Damron; and canine companions, Rusty and Buddy.
He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Jerry E. Thompson ('65wb).
Memorial services were held on February 19, 2011, at the Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Those wishing to honor Jim's memory may contribute to the Yakima Valley Humane Society.
