The Richland Jaycees sold tickets for the October 14, 1965 8 p.m. show. Reserved section tickets were $3.50. I have my ticket stub a well as a piece of paper with the autographs of Louis Armstrong, Billy Kyle and Buster Bailey. Hope this helps. -Doreen HALLENBECK Waldkoetter ('51) ~ Green Valley, AZ **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Pete BEAULIEU ('62) Re: Coach Roy Fowler (RIP) Between 1944 and 1956 we lived on the south end (on Douglass) just a four or five houses away from the Fowlers (on Dwayne). Roy passed his upbeat attitude and work ethic on to son Mike (nickname "Spunky") at a very early age... It was a deep-snow morning, probably 1955, when Mike ('67) knocked on our door with shovel in hand. He could not have been over six years old (by the calendar, 4 or 5 years younger than I). Mike was systematically clearing sidewalks at a dime a piece. I wanted to get back to the warmth of our baseboard heat vent, and rationalized that he might not make much. To which Mike hoisted out of his pocket a handful of dimes that popped my eyes out. The memory is still quite vivid. Also, the very early memory of having a St. Louis Cardinal celebrity in the neighborhood, and knowing that a promising professional baseball career had been cut short by something called the military draft. Best wishes to Mike and Karen ('62) from a neighbor and classmate. -Pete BEAULIEU ('62) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Gary BEHYMER ('64) To: Jim BREEDLOVE ('68) Re: Louis Armstrong and Jewel Brown My program has long since disappeared but I believe they were at the Bomber gym in February of 1966 ~ or so. -Gary BEHYMER ('64) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: John FLETCHER ('64) To: Jim BREEDLOVE ('68) Re: Louis Armstrong The more I think about it, the fuzzier my memory becomes, but I recall seeing Louis Armstrong in the Col-Hi gym in about 1963. -John FLETCHER ('64) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: David RIVERS ('65) Re: HAPPY NEW YEAR There's a conversation that started between Jimbeaux HAMILTON ('63) (Congrats by the way) and Pook SMITH ('63-RIP) and has continued between Jimbeaux and the undersigned that goes something like: "Do you recall whether that really happened or is it just so much a part of us that we no longer care?" As for me, with the exception of where I put the ratchet I laid down two minutes ago or what I had for breakfast (which is actually easy for me since I only have breakfast with the delinquents on Saturday, when we are on a hot rod run... or when I'm with the "girls" ('63/'65))... my memories are extremely vivid, However, they can also be, shall we say, sometimes less than delicate and often downright embarrassing... such was one memory which I recounted the other day and which has been alleged to be: "to put it mildly BS"... while I can still smell the perfume and see the teacher's agonized look, I shall take the high road and say I'm sorry to Myrna MELLING ('65) for including her in my recount of days long (I mean really long) past. Let me say, that I cherish Myrna's friendship and tho I haven't seen her since just after grageashun and have only spoken a couple of times since, she is one of my fondest memories of Jr Hi and Col-Hi. We were buds and I'd never intentionally jeopardize that friendship. For all you ex husbands out there who would prefer I not speak of your ex wives in such terms I apologize. In fact. let me say, that if any of you out there in Bomberdom would prefer I delete you or anyone you know from my stories and memory banks I will be happy to do so. I had a grand time in my youth. Tho my past may have been a bit sorted, and I've paid and continue to pay some very high consequences, I wouldn't change a moment of it. The times I had with my fellow Bombers may turn some faces a tad pink and would certainly cause some parents, including mine, to roll over in their graves, I must honestly say they would not come as much of a shock to very many. We are and were a fun loving bunch and our folks often turned a blind eye, I think, if the truth be told. So for the coming year, I will try and remember that you Bomber-babes are currently or were someone's wives and if you would prefer it, I will try and include you only in stories which paint you in the most glowing tones. And for the rest of you who enjoyed our silliness as much as I did... I'll keep my memories green! HAPPY NEW YEAR! -David RIVERS ('65) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ [David... (and I don't hafta pay ta say nice things... so there!) I was excited to get Pete BEAULIEU's ('62) aka "Peter" book today!!!!!!! Inside the cardboard packaging was a card containing a "Scandisk adapter" and a Scandisk ultra 64 GB" dowhichie... I opened the book and could read it just fine without the little scandisk dowhichies... have no clue why they were included... they look like the little widgets that you use in digital cameras... there was no slot in the book so I guess I'll just put them in the box of stuff I don't use but don't throw away... I know that every now and then Jimbeaux HAMILTON ('63) finds really cool stuff in his box and he gives it to me to put in mine... Is it me or is this year really VERY cold? I had just been feeling much better from the "cold" I had in October and yesterday I spent the day with the Delinquents in the freezing cold at Stateline... little run we've made with a ton of other hot rodders for the last 18 years... by the time I got home I had a very sore throat... arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh... The ladies took down the tree at the office today and gave everything away. Our building sold to ZAPPOS... my partner had asked us not to tell anyone it was up for sale and then it came out on the front page of the news paper... some of our tenants have been here for over 30 years... who knows where they will go... I don't think I'm gonna go any where... economy is just the pits and I can't imagine going back to a large firm at my age... That stuff was fine in my 30s and 40s when I thought I had something to prove... to be VERY honest, that is why I didn't come home to Richland for 20 years. I wanted to be "somebody" before I returned... when I did, I was just a drunk with a membership in a large prestigious firm... the last 26 years of sober living have given me more peace of mind, tho it hardly came all at once... most of it has come within the last two... I've always wondered why my memories of Richland are so vivid... I think it's because they ended at the age 19. They were carved in stone when I left and gave me a warmth I didn't find anywhere else. They were finite and didn't get mingled with a lot of later memories with the same kids in the same place... I am so very grateful to have been born and raised in our home town. One memory that I'll always cherish is "the walk" I thought that guy and his older brother were about the coolest guys I knew. I'm glad to continue the friendship with Jack ('61) and just want him to know that I remember losing his brother, Chuck GARDINER ('63-RIP) on January 3rd, 29 years ago! -David RIVERS ('65) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Pat DORISS Trimble ('65) Re: Tri-City All Bomber Lunch, aka Patti's Memorial Bomber Lunch Attention all Richland/Col-Hi Bombers - no matter when you graduated! Despite severe storm cells constantly pounding the island every hour or so we managed to get the trailer in place and all systems ready to fire under ugly conditions. The firing board had ice freezing on it. Incredibly at about 11:45 a hole appeared in the overcast, the wind died and snow thinned out. At exactly 12:00 I fired the first shells and seventeen minutes later the finale. Ten minutes later we were in near whiteout conditions. Everything the clouds could drop on us was horizontal. I was snug in my arctic suit as long as I could keep my back to the wind. No worries about clean up as the high winds scoured the surface. The City of Unalaska provides me with keys to the city buildings and we set the display up on a 50 foot trailer in the High Bay facility with doors at both ends closed and the heat on. We are now using two trailers as the show has grown. The second trailer is only 25 feet and we don't use it all, but we will this next 4th of July. The display was well received despite my worries that I am running out of ideas for making it different each time. But I have to admit the many nice comments help me to ignore my arthritic joints in the cold. At lunch on the New Year's Day a lady at the next table was saying how much she enjoyed the fireworks and was asking the waitress if she knew who did them? She replied that the lady was sitting next to him. I was a bit embarrassed at her lavish praise for what she said was the finest she had ever seen on the 6 continents. I asked her what took her across this world like that and she replied she was a film production manager. She asked for several of my business cards. Turns out Lisa is the Production Manager for "The Deadliest Catch". Crab season started last week and this year runs to May 15th. Each boat has a quota. I find it interesting with all of the people I have met in cafes, the airport, and other places on that remote island. Geologists, Oceanographers, Atmospheric Physicists, Electronics Engineers, Hydraulics Engineers, Marine Scientists, Federal Fish and Wild Life Auditor/Monitors (one on every vessel) and of course Captains, Mates and crew members of a variety of vessels. One young man I shared a table with was the mate of a "Long Liner". He and the captain shared command of the boat 12 on and 12 off. They use lines 10 miles long and reel in and process as much at 15,000 pounds of fish in 24 hours. He was an impressive young man at 26 years old. I flew to Anchorage today and will fly on home on Sunday the 6th which will make me another year older. -J. Larry MATTINGLY ('60) ~ Anchorage, AK Where many main streets are clear, most others are solid ice and treacherous. **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: David RIVERS ('65) Re: She's all you'd ever want She's the kind you wanna flaunt and take to dinner... Oh yeah, Bomber-babe birthday time in Bomberdom! Of course, before I launch into that I gotta take my usual side trips. I started Pete's ('62) book last night and am fascinated with the underling inquiry; one which is very personal to each of us and will continue to play a huge role in each of our lives. Naturally I am simultaneously involved in two other non-fiction books regarding current affairs. As I read, I recalled that several times in my life I have been approached to "write a book". Now don't get me wrong, I write well founded, cogent and persuasive briefs in which the reader is lead to agree with me. I have had several colleagues, who are not involved in the subject cases, confess they love to read my briefs for entertainment. My problem, however, is that I am too two dimensional, slothful and shallow to actually write a book. My best writing other than legal writing came in Undergrad, when the Prof. assigned us to do a research paper on any Greek Myth of our choosing. The prospect bored me to tears. Instead, I fabricated a myth based upon American history. When the paper came back it showed an "F" which had been changed to an "A+" with a note warning that if I ever told a soul it would revert to the "F". He said in good conscience he had to give me the A+. I was so naive (as I always have been for the most part in academia) it didn't occur to me the possible consequence for simply ignoring the assignment. I admire the skill and discipline required to author a well written book and commend Pete on his achievement. I've mentioned before that I have lacked "drive" my entire life. When I finally read my first book at age 21, I couldn't believe what I had deprived myself of for all those years. When I got to college I was like a kid in a candy store and devoured everything they had to offer with great relish. After entering on probation, I was immediately given a scholarship after the first quarter and received three degrees with full scholarships. But I never really had sufficient drive to want to "be" anything. I hafta tell ya, I bagged a full ride to Harvard for a PhD. to go to Law School because I thought Lawyers really dressed cool. Now if that can be considered ambition, well I just don't know. Once I started something I had to be the best, but only to prove that I could. Not out of desire to actually be the best. Well enough of this silliness... on to one a my faaaaaaaaavorite Bomber-babes. We always wanted to get together as Lawyer and secretary, but she just could never pass the test. Oh not that she doesn't possess the skills... it was a secret test and I'm allowed to say no more... HAPPY BIRTHDAY Paula Jill LYONS ('64) on your special day, January 4, 2012!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I used to have a few more of her in this setting but unfortunately we lost those in a home fire in 2009 along with dozens and dozens of pictures from that era. Some information about a few of them. The three power house stacks are from D Area. D was the only one with three stacks due to the addition of more boilers. It was planned to add more boilers to other 100 areas but due to the Johnson Administration's order to curtail Pu production that did not come to pass. The 1954 Plastic Man was an invention of Homer Moulthrop. Homer originally worked in the 231-W building. Arriving from Oak Ridge in 1944 one of his primary duties was contamination control. Homer, when he worked at Oak Ridge's X-10 site was tasked with studying how plutonium might travel inside the "hoods" used to process and analyze plutonium. He is also one of the few men I know of who worked at Chicago as well. Homer provided some interesting stories from that time too. The pictures of Hanford Patrol were part of a newsreel series on the protection of Atomic Facilities. A picture of the ferry with the "tank" reminds me of the "Wilma J". The reactor front face is probably N but I'm sure everyone knew that. And the name Camp Hanford is used inaccurately for war time construction camp. A pet peeve of mine and Burt PIERARD's ('59). It's Hanford Camp not Camp Hanford. (this has been debated before) Day's Pay christening was performed by Katie Bell Harris. I can't remember the engine number but it was the outboard engine on the co-pilot's side. The number 51,000 workers keeps floating around the actual number of workers is a little more than 45,000. And that number began to decline in July of 44. 51,000 refers to the total residents of the camp. The photo of the locomotive being decontaminated. I suspect the worker is wearing SWPs because of the potential. Decontamination of locomotives used to be done at Riverland Rail Yards. If the locomotive was "deconned" it was probably done at T-Plant. FFTF & Karen Silkwood. Here's a fact not well known. The plutonium found in her body was not the same as the plutonium found in her home. Each had a different isotopic makeup. Something was amiss in her story. The model near the Hanford High School. Something seems out of place. I didn't think any walls of the High School had been taken down. There was a brick building behind it. Hmm? [see entry above about this picture. -Maren] And the inside photo of the decon building. Atomic Man McClusky's home for a period of time. Friends of his used to play cards with him when Mac was there. They wore SWPs and a mask but many a card game was played much to his enjoyment. You know ARCHO bought him a color TV and a nice easy chair for him to use. That chair was still there when they removed the building a few years ago. I believe it wasn't even contaminated. When I hear others talk about their school dayz, if they speak of them at all, I am gladdened by the experiences most of us had. By "us" I mean we Bombers. And even then I don't limit my thoughts to just those who were lucky enough to attend Col-Hi but all the kids who had the pleasure of spending at least a portion of their lives growing up in Richland. Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) reminded me the other day of the Army contingent in Richland and I recall so many of the kids I was close to who didn't get to stay long enough to be "Bombers" I remember Ronnie SHADELL ('64) who had an entire Life magazine story written about him in '68, while we were in Veitnam. As a result of that story I was able to share a couple of letters with Ronnie after he was sent to Oki after his third "hit"... he was a fun guy and lived next to the PARKER girls ('60,'63,&'65) when he went to Chief Jo... then there was Billie SIMMONS ('65) who lived in the house across from Ronnie. Billie was a big time music guy and we would listen to records in my basement for hours. He introduced me to the Olympics and "Big Boy Pete"... I think of him every time I hear that song. When I was leaving Vietnam, we were flown into DaNang to fly home. For some reason, long lost in my pea brain, I carried Billie's picture along with Carolyn MOORE's ('65) in my wallet the whole time of Vietnam. It's a wonder those pictures survived but they did... can't say the same for my social security card and things like that... I was totally lost in the huge base of DaNang and just hung with the rest of the survivors I had come over with waiting to fly home... I have a picture of 8 of us who went over together and all 8 came home with experiences of being hit from 1 to 9 times... the 9 time guy was a story of his own... he would not go home because of a huge SNAFU he had caused before going to Vietnam... trying to make up for it... we went to this little PX to get whatever (I'd go anywhere to avoid getting that hair cut I so badly needed) and I heard a familiar voice behind me... I knew it was Billie and whirled to see his big grin! What a moment... what I'm getting at, in my own round about way, is that upon grageashun, I was convinced that I knew (not maybe as great pals but at least had met) every kid in my class and a whole bunch of other kids in other classes... as the years pass my memory fades on some of the faces, but at least at that time I felt good to know these kids... I feel sorry for kids who didn't grow up with that closeness. One of the kids I knew I knew and have been happy enough to get to know much better is having her special day today. I am so pleased that over the years we have become pretty close and got to know each other fairly well... I would ask them if they knew what athletic teams from Richland were called, prior to being called the Bombers. Most often, they would look at me incredulously and ask, "Well, haven't they always been the Bombers?" To this I would reveal that, "No, they were the Beavers and before that, they were the Broncs!" That would explain how ND got the 14 points that show up on the scoreboard. It would seem that Mr. Sabin knows how to coach a team to peak at the proper time. The previous year 'Bama lost to LSU in SEC title match, and then turned around and trimmed the Tigers' whiskers for the National Championship. How soon they forget. I think I may have mis-identified the street in North Richland where the steam plant stood. It would been either 1st or 2nd and not A. East-west streets in NR were numbered starting at the south end of "town". The north-south streets were lettered (with two exceptions) starting on the east or river side of town. There was no "A" street, and the two exceptions were GWWay and Stevens Drive. I believe the steam plant supplied heat to the barracks in addition to the merchant buildings, like the North Star Theater, the Tavern, the Foodliner, the drugstore, warehouses on Stevens Drive and the Signal gas station at the corner of 5th and GWWay. I was very fortunate in having great doctors, nurses, friends, and, of course, my family, who were there for support... we had many tears and laughter, too, and that might sound "funny", but if you can find humor in some of the stuff that you are going through, it does help... when I lost my hair, we joked that now the kids would be able to see "the eyes in the back of my head". *grin* I know that sounds weird, too, but tears and humor/laughter really do help. there were "down times", too, and for that, I had lots of friends and family, who would hold me, cry with me, and just let me "be sad" for a bit. I will tell you that taking a protein drink of some kind, will also help with the nutrition, which is very important... also keeping as healthy as you can, will also help... you need vitamins, take whatever prescription medication you have been prescribed, and hygiene is important, too. believe me, brushing my teeth was painful, as my mouth was full of sores, but I found using baby toothpaste helped, plus ice chips, popsicles, and potato soup, which my daughter would make me, daily... she'd blend it in the blender, so I didn't have to worry about chewing, just swallowing. *grin* at any rate, do what your doctors tell you, get support from family, friends, or a cancer support group, and know that you will have many Bombers keeping you in prayers. if you want to privately email, feel free to do that at any time. hugs to you and your family, they will need support, too, as this also takes its toll on them, as it will be hard on them, watching you go through this... my oldest daughter "held it together", and was my care-giver, but it took its toll on her, at times, too... she tried very hard not to show it, to me, but I could tell... after all, I am her mom. *grin* -Linda REINING ('64) ~ we are still having Winter in Bakersfield, CA and am a "happy camper"... this is MY kind of weather. **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Betti AVANT ('69) Re: Thanks A great big Bomber accolades to all who responded to my plea for thoughts and prayers in my time of need. Mike FRANCO ('70) and I don't necessarily see eye to eye on everything but I am CERTAIN he will confirm that the G-Man was about the nicest guy either of us have ever known. And FRANCO and DANA will go down as one of the great comic partnerships of all time. To share a little G story: George didn't travel all that much. After a couple of years touring the world courtesy of Uncle Sam (US Navy 1971-'73) G was pretty much content to stay home. He made the occasional foray to Seattle for a Seahawks or Mariners game and was an ANCHOR of the annual Richland Road Trip to visit Bobby JACOBS ('70) and assorted motley characters in L.A. during the late '70s and early '80s. No doubt, Mike "Accuracy Counts" FRANCO ('70) will correct me on one or more of the previous factoids but basically George stayed close to home. He paid a visit to me when I was living in Seattle during the early '80s. Two Bomber Babes, Gaylinn ('68) and Tracy ('76) WRIGHT had G and I over for dinner one night. It was a very nice spread, as I recall, but the "highlight" was the very special Croissants the girls had procured to accompany the meal. Don't exactly recall WHY they were so darn special but they were. Anyway, during the course of dinner, George was offered another Croissant (for those of you who did not know George, he was big on bread) as in "Would you care for another Croissant, George?". Well George just kind of sat there for a second or two and then came his classic reply "What the hell is that? French for Buns?" I nearly fell off my chair laughing and it took a couple of minutes for things to settle down. Not sure it as funny in the retelling as it was in person but, trust me, it was hilarious. The wonderful thing about George was that this little pearl just kind of came out - he wasn't TRYING to be funny - he just was. And to this day, whenever I see, touch, taste, or even think of Croissants - I think of my good friend George. Hope you are hitting 'em long and straight up there, brother. I also wanted to take a moment to congratulate Len PARIS ('69) on his special day - today. It was located upriver (west) of where the Yakima River empties into the Columbia, with one of its runways actually on the dike at the Yakima River edge. The old road to the "Y" and to Kennewick (GWWay) was to the east. Kay MITCHELL Coates ('52) probably knows more. I think her dad was one of the gentlemen involved in the airport construction. Bill HIGHTOWER ('49) learned to fly there too, and may have more details. He lives in Kennewick now. Last I saw, it looked like a big gravel pit where the runways had been located. I learned how to fly at that airport, and took off and landed there many times in the '50-'52 time frame. Soloed when I as 16. That main runway was used the most, and in prevailing westerly winds, our approach would have us turning into the final leg out over the Columbia River. As I recall, he airport was largely built by volunteers, and a number of individuals built private hangers in the early years. The main structure was a Quonset building. Only CAP members could use the airport on a permanent basis. The existing airport, NW of town, was closed to civil aviation and used by AEC only (I think). They had a number of Piper aircraft there used for security patrols around the perimeter of the Hanford project. Someone else commented on troops being stationed at North Richland. They were Army folk, NIKE antiaircraft batteries were manned by them. I had a "run-in" with one of the soldiers in '51, I think. He rear-ended my ole '38 Chev. I chased him right out between the barracks with several other Col-Hi kids in the car. Next thing we knew, soldiers were pouring outa' the barracks and we were surrounded! MPs came roaring up in jeeps and saved our hides! The poor guy who rear ended me ended up in the Richland jail charged with "hit and run", but I helped get him off the hook by describing the whole event - we had "taunted" him and were having a "rat race" through town. I slammed on my brakes at a stop sign - he couldn't get stopped. Best I know they let him go. His name was Albert Raymer or something similar. I would like to encourage you to get a copy of a book by Barbara Delinsky, who is one of my most favorite authors and a breast cancer survivor. It is called "Uplift" and is a composite of many suggestions from many survivors of breast cancer and its treatments. This disease causes one to deal with many aspects of dealing with the physical, personal and emotional aspects of chemotherapy, radiation and surgical treatments and a lot of how others with this disease have successfully dealt with these issues. I would be happy to send you a copy if you are unable to obtain one, with the stipulation that you share this wonderful book, after you no longer need it, with someone you know who is going to have to face dealing with this disease as you have. I recall one winter day we were hiding on the side of Stuart's house throwing snowballs at cars... the rule was: "loud pipes... don't throw"... well some loud pipes approached and for some unknown reason, one or all of us let 'er fly... smack in the middle of the windshield of a very nice blue semi-custom... we ran thru the patch of grass to Terry's... it wasn't easy because Terry was digging holes and burying coffee cans as "boobie- traps" don't ask me why... ask him... we reached the back door safely and huddled in the front room waiting, thinking the driver would never know where we went... varoom varoom... took him no time at all... Benny Angel (?) sat outside waiting for us... eventually he left (after we pushed Richard BRUNELLE ('65) out the door and screamed Richard would kick Benny's behind)... I remember being head over heels in love with Kathy in Col-Hi... I asked her out one time and on the day of the date I was in the worst day of an awful cold... I had Vicks in my nose and was carrying a box of kleenex... my nose and eyes were running and I just wanted it to be over (not as much as she I'm sure)... I never asked her out again! So now I know why I didn't venture to the b-day boyz house even tho it was full of Bomber-babes! The second, one of my current law partners was hounded by our family doc to get blood tests for three years. When he finally did, the tests greatly concerned our Doc and he sent him right to an Oncologist who found a spot on the pancreas and several on his liver. They thought they had caught the liver ones in time and thought they beat them... the pancreas spot was too large to operate. The liver is going down hill and he is on what he now calls the chemo treadmill... not much in results just making him sicker and sicker... Please, please, please listen to your Doctors. It was hazardous in that if you were unfortunate enough to hit the bank you were usually thrown into some sandburs growing along the banks. The 300 Area at one time had a "herd" of Beagles that were trained to smoke cigarettes for treats, or maybe their whole meals, kernels at a time. Later years - '70s - another group of Beagles were trained to smoke marijuana, and then the results over the years were compared between the two classes. Can't imagine the obvious overdoses of nicotine and THC those animals ingested all day long. I never heard if there was a control group that didn't smoke either?? I believe that the Mary Jane was supplied by Government-run growing sites in the Southern states. Probably would have been a lot more lethal than what was available at the time. The 100F (?) area was another lab where all kinds of animals were used to measure the doses of radiation... pigs, dogs, etc. I've seen pictures of pigs that were badly disfigured. The animals that died were placed in cardboard drums and disposed of in a large ditch outside the fence of 100F. We found this ditch in 1973 when I was walking the Hanford site with a Geiger counter for $3 an hour. It was multiple layers, covered by layers of dirt. Later years, I was involved in the cleanup of this ditch in 2008-2009 as it was dug up and removed to the interior Hanford landfill. So - David - I believe you, and don't think anything is a forbidden subject, as multiple documents are available to the public about these activities. Probably couldn't conduct those experiments today, but they were done to understand the health problems which could come from exposure to radiation. No doubt helped create our safety culture at Hanford. I'm an animal lover these days, so it is a sad story. Too bad experiments like that weren't done on our DDT jeeps... but then, maybe they were... and we were the test pigs??? Now I know my problem. DDT, Agent Orange, Radiation cocktail. -Dwight CAREY ('68) ~ wishing for the Sun today. **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Lori SIMPSON Hogan ('70) Re: comments on the 1/19/13 edition Maren, I'm and AOLer and I always get the Sandstorm?!? As soon as I find it I'll send in another entry. I always wanted to know what tests they might have done to the alligators they had at one time. I remember he showed me pictures of "Hanford Pigs" hooked up to a heat source installed in their chest cavity. They were testing the body's ability to dissipate heat from the potential of using a nuclear power source to power an artificial heart. I thought at the time they were doing this at the animal farm as he was in Richland for a short period of time. Now these many years late I don't know if they did it at the farm or were just using the "Hanford Pig" in the project. As I remember the "Hanford Pig" was bred to be similar to humans in some aspects. I had met the guy in a sporting goods store and my girls and I took him fishing on a day trip one time. Larry MATTINGLY ('60) reminded me of the fact that I was involved in this effort. I would wind a heating coil around a small piece of copper tubing and insert it in a vein near the heart. This was when they were thinking about inserting a small atomic pump in humans to replace the heart. They had no idea of how much heat the device would throw off so they were trying the Hanford Swine since they were so close to the human body in many ways. I made up a number of heaters, increasing them by steps. The pigs would stand 'straddle legged and pant like crazy. One way they throw off heat is by drooling. I'm not sure, but I think the largest heater we installed was close to 400 watts. We were never able to kill a pig by this means and they gave up. I also saw the "beagles?" that were smokers. They were as bad as us humans. When it came time for their smoke they were ready and waiting. Some of them also smoked pot. One of the problems the workers there had was attempting to not get attracted to any animal since they were medical objects and could be terminated at any time. This was in a building in 300 area on the banks of the Columbia, the number fails me since that was over 50-60 years ago. The animal farm at 100-F I believe was retained for the larger animals BNW had the 300 area building. -Phil BELCHER ('51) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Pat DORISS Trimble ('65) Re: REMINDER/UPDATE You and your family are invited to a Scottish Burns Supper on Saturday, January 26th, from 6:00--9:00 PM at the West Richland Moose Lodge. The Oncologist presented my case to the tumor board a week after my biopsy which also included the Surgeon I had selected (had an appointment with her later that day, just the way it worked out). She presented me with options but said because of the size I'd probably be better off doing a mastectomy to make sure it is all removed and she'd check lymph nodes either way although they looked OK on the MRI. I ended up doing a 2nd biopsy last Monday for the other area they had seen on the screening exam, adjacent to the other area already biopsied. It too showed cancer, albeit a different type. I'm now looking at a mastectomy the middle of February and then see where I go from there. I will be done on a Friday and discharged on Saturday with drainage tubing in my chest. I imagine I'll then be looking at some chemotherapy but will cross that bridge when it comes. I'm looking long and hard about moving back to Richland but won't make those plans until some time in the summer as I don't want to move in the middle of the winter and now probably treatments. Thanks to those who responded previously, it meant a lot to me. -Betti AVANT ('69) ~ Lacey, WA ******************************************* ******************************************* That's it for today. They just seemed so danged cool. Don't laugh, but remember when the 4 Preps played David's frat brothers on Ozzie and Harriet? Well, that's what the guys in that class reminded me of. I remember one particular day when Rob HILLS ('63) pulled up to LaMont's ('63) house and a bunch a guys jumped into Rob's car... now how on earth would I remember such a thing... but I do... clear as a bell... what I was doing at Jefferson I don't know... maybe just walking somewhere from the uptown but the memory remains... this year at the Red Sweater etc., etc., etc. brunch the b-day guy had the coolest hat on and I may have forgot to mention it... but anyway, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Joe FORD ('63) on your special day, January 28, 2013!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -David RIVERS ('65) ******************************************* ******************************************* That's it for today. This is a kid that can get up inna morning, work on a fuel pump and burn his house down before noon... He put Sonny Bono to shame on the downhill slide and just about has done it all in his life-time. I almost aged him once by about 30 years driving a Richland Bell pick-up to Camas, moving my folks there when I passed an airstream, not realizing the Washington side of the freeway was not yet finished... I vividly remember the flash of a green '57 Plymouth as I finally managed to get the truck back in to the stream of traffic after almost knocking down every white post on the side of the road... his eyes were bugging out and he was screaming something like: "We're gonna die... We're gonna die"... just the kinda thing to give a 17 year old panicked driver confidence that he could pull this one off... I remember holding his hand with WARFORD ('65) as we went over to his then girlfriend's house to tell her parents they had just got married in Ideehooo... talk about wailing and gnashing of teeth... Scared Ricky n me outa out wits... one time he was driving his '56 Ford on the highway and the hood came loose... whap! Hood and windshield done for. After that he and Larry GREER ('65) would exchange hoods on date night, depending on who was driving... Kinda like Jim COX ('64) and I did with batteries... we all gave my Mom a good laugh... You can imagine our shock when he went in to the field of nuclear energy and became a bigtime expert in the field... all we could think of was the Beav's finger on the "button" (the one Barry Mcguire sang about being pushed)... Funny, since this is the first time I've done one of these for the Beav (some guys I have never learned their b-days... duh) I feel like I could go one for days with Beav stories... .I remember one year we were all at the Town Crier having lunch... during the episode of Mad Cow in Washington... I asked the Beav what was good... he said the hamburgers were great... after finishing half of mine I asked him what he was having... his answered: "I'm having chicken... not gonna catch me eating beef for a long time"... I about hadda cow myself... Well, I honestly could go on and on but I think I'll save a few and say HAPPY BIRTHDAY Carl "Beaver" BEYER ('65) on your special day, January 29, 2013!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -David RIVERS ('65) ******************************************* ******************************************* That's it for today. I have some very bad news about one of our own that I felt I should pass on to you... Bill HOYLE ('58) is in pretty bad shape and is really having the fight of his life and I thought it might be a blessing to him to know that he is in our hearts and prayers as he is fighting ... heart, lungs, diabetes and many other problems. Bill has been fighting much of this for the past two years, but according to his doctors has reached a tipping point to where he won't be able to over come and is loosing his fight and it will be just a matter of time. I know how hard it is to face this kind of news and what can you say? I do however think that any kind word or prayers would be heart felt from Bill... he is facing that road we all will face and there's no return and it has to be a lonely feeling I'm sure...
