Re: Model A
To: Kay Mitchell Coates ('52)
Hi Kay;
My internet research indicates that your car was a '28 or '29
Model A. The two are so alike that I can't tell them apart. They
are not the same as the '30 or '31. The fenders are different
and there is a small step between the cowling width and the body
width on the '28 and '29. The radiator shell is smaller and the
windshield visor doesn't blend smoothly with the roof.
I just know that you and Nonajean had a blast with it.
Regards,
-Bill Hightower ('49)

Re: CAP
There has been some recent discussion about the CAP. I too was a
proud member of the CAP in the early '50s. It was fun and my
first introduction to military life. I remember there was a Link
Trainer that usually didn't work, but there was one day that it
did work, and we took turns attempting to fly it. There was a
desk with a map and a gizmo if I remember right called a "frog"
that would trace a line on the map showing your flight path. If
I remember right, neither I, or anyone else got very far before
crashing. I think I bore a hole in the map from spinning.
Those that are familiar with a link trainer will appreciate how
difficult it would be for a novice to keep his bearings in a
Link Trainer. I was also part of a drill team and we marched in
a parade which I believe was during Frontier Days. We spent many
hours practicing for that parade. After the parade we went to
the field and those that had planes gave us a ride. In my case
it was in a Stinson Voyager. I don't remember now who owned it,
but we flew over my house in what is now West Richland. We lived
at the base of Flat Top. We made a couple passes hoping my folks
would come out so I could wave at them, but they didn't so
returned to base.

Re: Old Richland Phone Numbers
A few years ago, Roxannne Knutson Short ('62, 5-1527) spotted a
1956 Richland Phone book at a yard sale and bought it for $3.00.
It's a treasure, complete with doodles and some handwritten
names and numbers. Nobody knows who owned that book. Perhaps it
was yours.
If the '56 phone book won't take you back, you probably weren't
there. The first classification in the yellow pages is
"Accordians," and a TV was called a "Television Apparatus." And
yes, the white pages have everybody's numbers.
Roxie was kind enough to let me scan the phone book. It's a .pdf
file that's much too large to send as an email attachment, but
if you want one I'll burn a CD an send it to you. Just send me
an email with your name and address at BomberPhoneBook@aol.com.
The CD is free and I'll cover the mailing cost. If you like what
you get, send 4 or 5 bucks to Maren to support the Sandstorm.
Enjoy!

Hi,
Here is an article and accompanying photo that I recently came
across going through old boxes in the basement. The following
won the "big" coveted championships at Spout Springs/Tolgate
that year. Out of 9 winners, for the year, 7 were from Richland
--- Cliff Cunningham, Ted Johnson, James Hurt, Terry Smith, Bob
Mathis, Betsy Fox (Vance) and James Hodgson. The other two
winners were from Pasco.

Does anyone remember catching the bus early in the morning every
Saturday in front of BB&M's? How you would get your skis ready
the night before -- boiling up that bar of sliver wax, putting
your skis across 2 upside down chairs and painting the wax on
(the skis - not the chairs)? Or Tony, the largish man with the
cigar always standing out in front of BB&M? Or stopping
somewhere in Milton-Freewater on the drive up to Tolgate -- at
some bar - going in to get lemon candies -- and feeling so
'cool' going into a bar -- or, the ultimate of experiences --
wearing that belt and hook/rope get-up that you only earned by
skiing down the dreaded mountain called 'High'. (They should've
waited until the '60s to name that mountain...) I remember when
I first wore that belt -- my proud swagger could not be matched
by even John Wayne. And I managed to keep all my fingers as that
hook, which was VERY close to my fingers, went over these huge
pulleys on a steel cable at a very steep angle going up the
mountain. Sometimes, icy ruts in the path under the cable pulled
you away from the cable -- and yet, your skis had to follow
wherever the ruts went and you somehow had to not fall off, or
get your hand mangled or roll down into the person behind you.
All a coming of age experience for me. (while in 8th grade).
And then, the final part of this experience... ahhh the sweet
making out w/whatever handsome lad sat in the coveted back of
the bus. All warm, tired out, surviving another day on the
mountain and that delicious kissing. MMMmmmmm - those were the
days my friend. Heady days... which is appropriate, as I still
have my black 'Head' skis, with my name on them. I tried to use
these skis (and my accompanying black - LEATHER <--- very cool)
boots, with a strap that hooked onto the ski - at Vail 5 years
ago - and they wouldn't let me. Something about safety and
ankles. Love these memories.. any other skiiers out there? I
remember names like David and Phil Priebe, David and Phil
Heffner, my brother, McGregor Fox, Jock Cameron, Mike and Bob
Mathis, Ron Richards, Joe Kaveckis, Jim Hamilton, Rob Hills and
Betsy Jones.
-Betsy Fox Vance ('63) ~ Back in Richland after living in
Boulder, CO and Missoula, MT most of my life. Contemplating
a move to San Diego... any alums down there? Just returned

Thanks to Ken Heminger ('56wb) for his memories of the CAP base.
My Sister Carol Carson Renaud ('60) and I were very active
in CAP in the mid '50s. The cadet squadron reached about 40
members, we marched in the Frontier Days Parade and the Lilac
Parade in Spokane each year. Attended summer encampments at
McCord and Geiger (Spokane). Our Drill Team won the Washington
Wing contest and the Air Force flew us to So. California for the
Regional competition where we came in 2nd to the Hawaii drill
team (who had some wicked hula moves in their routine.) Maj.
Francis "Shorty" Moeller was our Senior Advisor and she
contributed greatly to the growing up of her cadets. Her Son
Marvin Moeller went off to the Air Force just as we joined the
squadron. I remember he Stinson Voyager and the Air Force
trainer we had. I also remember being sent to the hangars for 10
yards of flight line and a bucket of prop wash. The Scouts had
their Snipe Hunting, we had our flight line.
I have a lot of pics of that time but I am at my office and
don't have them here. Are the CAP Cadets still active?

I never skiied when I lived in Richland, but used to hear the
stories from Rob, and Bob and Ron the morning after your ski-

graduated from hygiene school that is the first thing we did as
a family take ski lessons. My whole family skiis now and we are
on the 3rd generation of teaching them. I cannot imagine living
somewhere my whole life without experiencing being on top of a
mountain and skiing down. We now live in the midwest and there
are a few places to ski man-made snow, but mainly everyone here
goes to Colorado. There is a funny poster available here in
Missouri that says SKI MISSOURI! and it is the picture of a hill
with many ruts in mud and a cow. Makes me laugh everytime!!
We were just in Richland... Mike ('60) and I walked down along
the dike to the Spudnut Shop. We were there for Kathy Rice
Veverka's ('58-RIP) Passing Celebration. I told Mike that you
and Sheila used to live on that street. I would have stopped if
I had known you were contemplating moving. I hope that whatever
you decide about moving from Richland that you are happy. Life
is an adventure and I often am glad we took the moves we did
because we have experienced so much more that is different from
the west coast, not neccessarily better, just varied. You are

Good Morning Everyone from Foggy Seattle!
What weather we have had in 18 hours. Yesterday I sat in the sun
for about 1 1/2 hours midday. After about 2:30 it began to get
very cold. At about 5:45 slush and hail fell.. big lumpy hail,
covering the windshield and dripping wet!!! Then it cleared
after about 20 minutes and a small glimmer of sun shone.
Then more cold.
This morning the fog in Wallingford and even 45th was so thick
I could only see the green lights heralding me to KINKOS,
visibility otherwise was so limited.. maybe only possible to
see 2 blocks.
OK.. weather report over..
Did anyone from this group or anyone whom you know of
participate on the Tri-City Herald's Community Conversations
group about safety in schools? I was selected to participate but
was in Seattle and could not. In my follow-up phone call asking
to communicate with members of the group and my 'take' on the
way the names are hidden is that people must enter this
discussion group in complete disguise! Although I had to argue
to be able to communicate with group members it was portrayed as
a major inconvenience to the TCH staff person. (I had to deal
with 2 as the initial contact was so resistant to doing anything
which might further discussion... he actually refused to
transfer my call to the editor.. "you can call 509-xxx-xxxx to
speak to him! This is my editorial page!"
He decided that he would have to contact every single person to
ask for permission!! Why not just send them an email saying I
would appreciate any discussion or feedback about how the group
went? I am glad I didn't make arrangements to attend. It appears
that the TCH is willing to send me copies of the essays written
by participants which they deem meritable to publish. Such
subterfuge. A very worthwhile group and important discussion
topic is so hidden; contributions to the public and to the
school systems in general will not be timely or availabel to
the School Board which is actively working on refining safety
policies in Richland Schools.
I hope things open up in the Tri-Cities, but I am in Seattle
now.

With regard to the discussion about the old Washington state
license plate letters, they were assigned by population rank
order of the counties: A King, B Pierce, C Spokane, D Snohomish,
E Yakima, etc. with Benton as R. Since the alphabet ran out at
26, the final 13 least populous counties were given double
letters appropriate to their name, hence Franklin (Pasco) FN.
I have no when this system was adopted (I am sure some other
reader will be able to add that detail) but it was already
in place when our family came in 1944. There was never a
reapportionment, and eventually as the state continued to grow
and longer numbers were required, the letters were absorbed into
the longer numbers and finally (again, I know not when) they
were simply discontinued.

I do not remember our number (Grover Dawson) when we lived at
208 Atkins from March 1949 to November 1950.
When we moved to 77 McMurray, it was 7-7793, but I don't think
that was the number at our first address above. I used to think
that the address and phone number were in synch deliberately!
When we lived at 2010 Harris (1958 until the late '60s or early
'70s--not sure when the folks moved to West Richland after I
left), I think the number was 943- or 946-8886. I may be
confusing it with the various numbers for Dawson-Richards.
Can anyone confirm my old home numbers and any of the Dawson-
Richards numbers?

Don't know if you saw the posting a few days ago from Fred
Phillips ('60) but he has a copy of the entire Richland phone
book from 1956 on cd -- which he has offered to send out to
anyone free of charge (thank you, Fred -- your heart is as big
as the Corvette you once drove) -- an interesting note about
that phone book --- can anyone guess what the big number you
called in 1956 was (on the front page) for emergencies? Was it
911?... no... Was it 0 for operator?... no -- ok, ok -- the
timer is zooming down -- who knows the right answer? Who did
Richland, WA call in 1956 for an emergency? Ok --- here it
is... (drum roll, please)... the FBI!!!!! Yes, indeedy! In big
bold numbers on the front page! On the next pages are numbers
for the police and fires -- five numbers - not one. wild, huh?
It is a fascinating archeological dig -- going through that
phone book -- as Fred mentioned --- TVs were called a television
apparatus'... It would be curious if anyone could recognize
their mom's writing interspersed all over the phone book. There
are Dr's appts. -- churches mentioned (in blue handwriting),
friends of hers -- it could've been any of our moms -- the
homesy quality of her notations throughout. In case you missed
his letter to the Sandstorm, Fred has graciously offered for
anyone to e-mail him
BomberPhoneBook@aol.com
to get a free cd of the 1956 phone book. It is really fun to
read and reminisce. Everyone's number is in there -- takes you
back to a kinder, easier time, when we could put our feet in
David's Shoes' 'look at your skelton-green-foot' machine -- or
get under our desks with our hands covering our necks so that we
would be protected from any atom bomb that might be dropped
(remember those horrible sirens?), or we could run in the fog of
the mosquito sprayers up on the dike --- hmmm - wonder if those
fun activities had anything to do with why I turned out one
molecule short of a happy meal.. Oh well -- get that phone book
- way fun.

It's with a good deal of sadness that I read of the passing of
fellow Bomber Bob Sandall ('58-RIP). Bob was a good friend who
I first met when we started attending Carmichael Jr. Hi in 7th
grade. He and Dave Gostnell ('58 - often the humanized motor
behind Bob's wheel chair) were almost an inseparable pair and
often a (speeding) hazard in the hallways. I was proud to call
Bob a friend, as well as David, and it didn't take too much
persuasion to get them to join our DeMolay Chapter. Both Bob and
Dave as well as myself eventually served as Master Councilors of
the best darn Chapter in the State!
Bob was able to finally discharge the two wheeler (plus two
small wheels in front) for crutches as he entered Col-Hi. When
he turned 16 and was able to drive his own car, he had blocks
attached to the brake pedal and accelerator, as I recall. This
was to assist his weakened legs to operate the car. I don't
really know how that helped, but we spent a lot of time as Bob's
passengers on our travels.
I'll look forward to seeing him again further down the road.

Re: Bob Sandall ('58 RIP)
I was sorry to hear of Bob's passing and have very fond memories
of him over a good number of years in Richland. I remember him
well at Carmichael and, being two years older, was in the top
orders of DeMolay when he was a starting member of that esteemed
group. I think that Bob was my first exposure to someone with a
disability and what he taught me has stayed with me all my life.
Bob never complained and there was nothing that he would not
take on irrespective of his poorly functioning legs. He just
did it and that was that! I remember that he did graduate
to crutches in high school and learned to drive a specially
equipped car, all of which elevated his life... and those around
him. He was truly a good guy and quietly taught a lot of us that
even if you are disabled doesn't mean that you can't get into
the mix and "mix it up" with the rest of us. I really admired
him and appreciated his gutty approach to life.
Re: CAP
We didn't live very far from the CAP base and I spent a
reasonable amount of time down there. As much as I love flying,
I have no clue why I didn't join it. Maybe I was too young or
maybe with my small size and huge ears they figured I could
fly myself... you know, the Dumbo theory. I do remember their
marching in the various parades around the area and the sharp
CAP uniforms they had. In more recent years I have been on air
searches in Alaska I flew with CAP observers and they were a
good group of kids that knew a lot about flying.
One CAP kid in Anchorage told me that he was considered a geek
at school for his participation in the CAP, mostly because of
the uniform and the military kind of environment. I told him
that if he wanted to fly, structure, doing the same thing every
time, would keep him alive so being a "geek" was a good thing...
staying alive is a good thing. I started a Sea Explorer Scout
Ship in Friday Harbor a few years back and they too got the
"geek" label from some of the multicolured hair, rings in every
orifice of their bodies gang. As our SES program began to
develop, we "recruited" one of the high school's three-sport
stars and things got immediately better for us with the
knucklehead crowd. And now for the rest of the story. This high
school sports star that joined our SES is now a tug boat captain
for Crowley Maritime here in Anacortes and we have coffee
together when he is in town. The moral of the story is...I know
some airline captains who got their start in the CAP.

Sometimes it's nice being a Kansan.
We moved here five years ago and have loved it ever since. Gets
a little windy, but I remember all those windy days we had in
Richland when we lived there. Those sand storms were really
something. I'm talking about the '40s and '50s.
I can also tell you all more about the theaters in Richland, as
I worked for them for them for quite a few years, as door man
and as a manager under Frank Stiles. I'm sure Doug Stiles ('57)
could tell you a lot of what went on behind the scenes.. That's
another story.
Wish we had more Bombers down this neck of the woods.

I was a motion picture operator in the Navy and when I returned
home I thought that I could pick up some extra money doing the
same thing. I did a refresher course at both the Richland and
the Uptown, mostly at the Richland where "The Graduate" starring
Dustin Hoffman was playing. I saw portions of that show at least
ten times, never did see the whole thing.
Re: Memories
I received another package from DOE with my security papers
enclosed. Took me back many years and was interested in seeing
the things my old friends had to say concerning me. One of my
fellow electricians added a PS to the paper saying, "Phil, if
you ever read this you owe me a beer." I'm sorry to say that I
can't pay off since he passed on about three years ago, but it
sounded just like him.
I was going through some old papers today and ran across a GE
News dated Friday, August 30, 1963. Wish I could buy some of the
cars that were advertised in it. I drove out to the 300 area to
see what was left. Rather sad to see the buildings going down
where I had spent so many years working there.

On the 50th anniversary of its founding, Dawson-Richards was
closed and sold in 1999 by the then owner, George Anderson (he
started at the bottom and eventually became the manager before
buying Dad out in the early 70s or so). The current owner has
retained the store name and it is a tux shop, albeit much
smaller than either the original or the expanded store when it
was mens' and boys' and then mens' and womens' clothing. It was
so great growing up there!

Re: Old Bands - New Bands
Thought I would share an evening with you. I was at my favorite
Huntington Beach, CA (HB) watering hole, Perqs, last Friday
night. You can actually see a photo of Perqs in that 'Woody'
video I sent around last month... Perqs is across the street
from the pier. Absolutely one of the greatest bars in the free
world. So, there I was watching the son of Ginger Baker, Kofi
Baker, hammering on his drums. I can say dad would be, and I'm
positive he is, very proud of his boy. When I go to Perqs,
which isn't a lot... only on Friday and Saturday nights of the
week... oh, yea, and sometimes a week day or two if there is a
baseball, basketball, football, hockey, lawn bowling or the
painting landscapes with oil show happening... I don't use
excuses... but, I never know, nor care, who is showing up with
the entertainment, which isn't always on the stage, may I add.
Mostly, I'm not there for the band or the drinks... really. I'm
just there. Perqs is very much like Life's A Beach Restaurant
and Bar in Kihei, where I almost became an alcoholic. The word
fun comes to mind. Perqs in HB is a dream come true for older
folks (my buddy, DeRock, is 76) that like good conversation,
music and occasionally watching drunks fall into drum sets and
speakers... particularly while I'm sipping on my mineral water
and cranberry juice cocktail out of a Johnny Walker signature
glass to appear I'm drinking with the rest of them. Okay... fer
sure, dudes, Perqs is not an old folk's home, but a gathering
ground for old and young locals and some of the 11,000,000 per
year visitors to HB, plus or minus a few million. The locals...
I've been here six years April 17 and not really sure what I
am... believe a few Europeans will likely show up this year due
to Americans staying home and wondering what they are going
to do with the SUV... but that's another story. We will see.
Anyway, Kofi Baker - who woulda thunk it. Never a dull moment in
life when you get out of that recliner and hit the pavement...
know what I mean? Anyway, for those wop remember and loved
Cream, the kid is doing dad's old band covers. Very
entertaining, difficult to dance to... and some of the things
we were digesting to listen to it years ago that caused brain
damage are not quite as popular anymore or we would have been
sitting on the floor holding our thumb and pointing finger
together chanting ‘I'm So Glad, I'm So Glad, hmmmmm hmmmm'...
nevertheless, if you get a chance to see this young man beat on
his drum set, do it. Don't forget yer competition orange ear
plugs.

The Richland Seniors Association and Richland Parks and
Recreation are putting on "FASHION THROUGH THE AGES" on
Saturday, April 12 from 1:00 to 3:00 at the Richland Community
Center. Beautiful old clothing from the 1800s through today
will be modeled. Most of the clothes are being furnished by the
East Benton County Museum and by Sagebrush Old West. Two of my
granddaughters will be modeling - Reanna Norwood will model my
1954 wedding dress and her sister, Beth Mata, will model my 1950
prom dress. The lady from Sagebrush will also present an exhibit
of purses. This was put on last year to more than 125 people,
and they asked for it again. There will, of course, be lots
of new outfits, as we have a treasure trove of outfits at the
Museum! Great fun looking through them and deciding what to use!
Table decorations will be purses, hats and gloves. Dessert and
drinks will be served, and many clothes wooden figures will be
placed around the room for you to look at more closely. Tickets
are $5 at the Community Center or from me, or $6 at the door.
Should be a fun afternoon! Hope you can join us!

Hello Everyone,
Well, it is spring break for me as a substitute for Highline
Schools. I am working on a new business bill for the Washington
Education Association Representative Assembly about how to treat
and prepare for substitute teachers more professionally.
I am almost all moved in my apartment. Thanks to Goodwill and
many free donations from moving sales and friends. I still need
a good laptop. When I do get to Richland I will sell some things
and donate others to Goodwill.. making the circle complete.
Sunday my dance group got an announcement that the Seeds of
Compassion group needed volunteers to string beads for bracelets
which will be given out to all who attend the Saturday event
with the Dali llama. I spent a few hours there, rested, went out
to dinner with a friend at Bizarro Cafe and then returned to
work on many more.
The group was multi-varied in types of folks attending and
working together. In the afternoon many high school students
from a Community Project Group were there with their mentors.
During a race between teams to see who would string 400
bracelets first, our team won! Many teachers, social workers,
retired folk and church folks from CSL were there working. It
felt very worthwhile to be a part of this program.
I will be attending the all day Sunday event with many workshops
and presentations about ways to work with youth and to
incorporate some techniques in or with education curriculums.
To me, the program, Roots of Empathy, has more promise as a
positive force to prevent bullying than other anti-bullying
programs which I have had to teach so far.
Well, off to enjoy a bit more spring rain in Seattle.

Don, your CAP pictures brought back a lot of old memories. They
must have been taken after I left for the Air Force in November
1950. The only ones I recognize are Willis Weichel ('49-RIP) and
Don Arbograst ('49-RIP). Can anyone put name to the rest of the
people?
Don was the only cadet that had his own airplane. I think his
folks bought it for him. Although Dale Meador ('49) did have a
part interest in a Taylorcraft until he wrapped it around the
wind sock pole by the gas pump after refueling it. Ah, those

Wow! You really rocked my boat when I checked out the pictures
you sent to yesterday's Sandstorm. How well I remember those
planes, that field and those fellows. I dated Willis Weichel for
several years. Many of our dates were spent flying over Richland
in a couple of the planes shown in the photos. I recognized
Don Arbogast also (hope I am correct on the name). Yes, that
airfield and the people there were a big part of my life back
then. My dad, Art Mitchell was the Squadron Commander and
actually helped build the field in the late '40s. He was a
heavy equipment operator and I have photos of him driving a
"cat" to create the rocky runways. Flying was very dear to his
heart and he loved that airfield.
My grandson, Mitchell Coates ('02 I think) is carrying on the
family tradition and has recently received certified instructor
license and will be working out of Bergstroms in Pasco. He
will be logging hours so he can reach his goal of becoming a
commercial pilot.
Thanks for sending those pics. I had never seen any of them

Re: Stupid Stupid Stupid
I remember that line from a movie where this lady was helping a
family collect insurance money for toxic waste... but it applies
to me today... or rather yesterday... I had Cathy Weihermiller's
('66) name on the list and have no clue why I didn't write a
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to one of the best Bomber-Babes the class of '66
ever produced... but I've wised up... three of the Weihermiller
dynasty have birthdays in April so I'm not taking any chances
and so I will wish Cathy a belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY (the 9th) and
try and make up for it all by wishing Myra ('67) and Ellen ('63)
a HAPPY BIRTHDAY on the 14th and the 22nd, respectively... so
ha ha ha... I feel much better about that...
I have no pix yet but I am supposed to be getting some as well
as a little video coverage of Jimmy Heidlebaugh's band, the
Wesson Oil Five... no that's not right... the Smith Brothers
Coughers... no that can't be it... the Crisco Party Swingers...
Oh no no no... Oh yeah... the Smith and Wesson Blues Project
playing at a fund raiser for me last night (the 8th)... it was a
great night... all the Donut Delinquents brought their hot rods
and customs... I brought Maddy's favorite, my chopped and low
slung '49 Ford and there was a good showing of people with
contributions... the food and company was fantastic... Jimmy's
daughter was there and was so happy that her Dad finally had a
job... Jimmy even sang a song and I believe it is included in
the video clip... so watch the Sandstorm for your favorite bald
headed "Painter Dude" (fka the "Big Fat Liar") rockin' out for
your listening enjoyment!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Hanford cancer news
I spotted a small story in the Tacoma New Tribune Thursday April
10 on page B3.
Paraphrasing...
The Advisory Board on Radiation and Worker Health has
recommended to the Health and Human Services Secretary to pay
"automatic compensation" for some former workers at Hanford.
This would apply to people with many forms of cancer.
To be eligible they would have to have worked in the 300 area
from September 1946 to 1961. Or in the 200 areas from 1949
through 1968. Survivors of some workers who have died should
also be eligible for $150,000.00 PLUS reimbursement for medical
care.
According to the story, if the Secretary accepts the
recommendation, this would take effect unless congress objects
within 30 days.
Personally, this leaves my father out, but I spent about 85% of
my 9-1/2 years in those areas. Of course I don't have cancer.
At least not that I know of. Several of us did have gross over-
exposure with ingested tritium during a series of tests on ex-
reactor fuel elements.
I think it is too bad they do not include workers in the 100
areas where the reactors were. A good many of them got some
fairly high doses over the years.

Well, Bomber gang. I am very late with this follow-up of our
Bomber Luncheon from March 8th. Hope all will forgive, but I
have been very busy, and recuperating from a nasty sinus
infection. I won't bore you all with the details, but thank
God for my doctor and antibiotics.
So here are the attendees:
Tom Hemphill ('62), Linda Hemphill (spouse), Lorraine Ward
Shelby ('63), Lola Heidlebaugh Bowen ('60), Mary Heidlebaugh
(Bomber Mom), Bob Carlson, aka Mike Clowes ('54), Alan Porter
('67), Ann Engel Schafer ('63). Ron Holeman ('56) and Leslie
Swanson Holeman ('59), and yours truly ('65).
Lola is the camera person, and also Ann arrived a bit late, and
didn't get in the picture. I think she was still on Caribbean
time after her wonderful cruise. She brought pictures, including
pics of her swimming with dolphins.
We had a great time, and although the food was a little slow in
arriving to our tables, the discussions were lively, as always,
and the view was superb. We weren't in our usual seating place
because the Red Hat Ladies were having a luncheon, too.
Our next luncheon will be May 17th, same time, same place.

Joanne, So sorry to hear about the American Airlines mess...
what a hassle! I hope you have a wonderful visit with your son
to make up for it! You are just hitting the tail end of the
wildflower season, but I spent most of the week at Texas A&M
(College Station) and the bluebonnets etc. around Bastrop, TX
are still gorgeous! If you go through Bastrop on 71 and then
turn left on 21 (& the next right heading toward Bryan), the
piney woods around Lake Bastrop are a lovely part of Texas to
see plus you could take along a picnic lunch. If you prefer a
pricier lunch, there is the Lost Pines Resort just before you
hit Bastrop although this area is not as forested as around the
lake.
Instead of rambling on about stuff, I will send you a list of
indoor and outdoor activities in & around Austin that you might
like?

Texas Governor's Mansion (512) 463-5516 Tours mon-thurs 10am to noon
Mount Bonnell Steps to the top, fantastic views
Matt's El Rancho Fresh, inexpensive Mexican Food
Zilker Gardens Beautiful to walk around
BBQ I recommend Rudy's (gas station type) or County Lin (nicer)!
My son works for Capital Sports & Entertainment, but says there
is nothing big going on this weekend with the music venues etc.
If you decide to drive to San Antonio, their Zoo is great, the
Alamo, river walk & little boat tour are nice too. On the way
there, you could take in the Natural Bridge Caverns which my
folks told me were as nice as Carlsbad, but not as big.
Anyway, I hope that you have a wonderful time in Austin.

In response to Gary Behymer's ('64) entry yesterday about the
'69 Warrior yearbook. Last I heard, Dave Standley STILL lives
in the house he grew up in on Kimball in Richland. My sister,
Connie ('74) and her family lived next to him years ago and I
am about 98% certain he is still there. To be honest, I doubt
if he really cares about getting the annual back.
I remember Dave had quite the lawn mowing operation back in high
school. He had a pickup and a small gas mower and worked from
sunup to sundown six days a week in the summer. He was very
industrious and a heck an outdoorsman. I think he became a
welder and has been out in the area ever since.

A friend has written a concise book related to the home
town of all of us: "America's Nuclear Wastelands: Politics,
Accountability and Cleanup" by Max Singleton Power (Pullman, WA:
WSU Press, March 2008).
http://wsupress.wsu.edu/shop/shopdisplayproducts.asp
What do you do with when nuclear residue with a half-life of
tens of thousands of years collides with Indian treaty rights
and a federal budget cycle with a half-life of only two years?
And who is you? Max brings it all together, and he writes
in simple and colorful terms (concealing his background as
a National Merit/Rhodes/Fulbright/Danforth Scholar). Until
recently Max was senior policy advisory for the Nuclear Waste
Program in Olympia. Here is a quick, balanced and very reader
friendly take on Hanford's permanent mark in history. I
recommend it.

I see you caught a photo of our old farm along the Yakima River
in the photos yesterday (4/12/08) The very top of the photo
shows the old farm house, the barn and the slough where it
follows around below the irrigation ditch. I see a new house
(nice one too) along the river at the end of Pederson Road,
right next to the old Hennigar place. Then Kenny ('61?) and Eric
('66?) Pedersons' old house is just up the road from this. At
the very top of the photo is Jim Nyland's ('63) house and Jim
Demand's ('61) house. Also along the river to the lower left was
the O'Conner ('61-RIP) house. Big changes but lots of old
memories all over in that photo. When John Adkins snapped this
photo, I'll bet he had no idea how many homes of "old Bombers"
would be included. This photo was about 1/4 mile down stream
from the Twin Bridges.

Good Morning Everyone,
Yesterday I attended the Seeds of Compassion event in the Qwest
Field. I haven't read the paper yet, so I am unsure how many
people attended. The free ticket which I was sent only gave me
admittance to a lecture for an hour. By the time the crowds
were dealt with my 'session' was over. I entered the main
area and gathered information from many groups.. all working
with children, literacy, poverty-eradication, families and
compassion.. it was wonderful for me. Since my ticket would
not allow me into the main event I went back outside to figure
things out and HOORAY!
A representative from a Women's Leadership Group had extra
tickets! She gave me one and of course invited me to join their
group. I might, they are in Tacoma however. I rushed in and up
all the ramps for a very high level seat! Way up in the air! I
sat alone for awhile watching crowds, clouds, wondering about
the rejection letter I had just received from Seattle School
District just before I left. It was a hard thing to get as the
verbal promise of hiring had hurried my move to Seattle. A group
member arrived. We enjoyed the event together. She had lived in
Richland for 6 months when her husband worked there and is more
a city-type person .. like me, so we got along quite well. We
both clapped nonstop during the opening drum performance.
Later I prepared to take the bus home. I went into the Starbucks
by the bus stop and used the coffee card I had won for stringing
so many bracelets for the event to buy lunch! Curry chicken
salad! Gotta love Seattle.. we are ethnic everywhere.
All day I had tried to live in peace about the Seattle
rejection. In a short article in the Seattle Times I found the
reason... another major money shortfall.. hiring frozen. I had
honestly felt that that might happen and when the computer
system could not use the incorrectly sent user name for me.. I
had a glimmer that all might not go as well as the personnel
folks had assured me. I had remained patient.. waiting for the
personnel rep whom I know personally from my last life in
Seattle to have time to fix the problem. Although he reassigned
me a new number.. it was 5 weeks later and although my
application was submitted it went into internet land and the rep
who hired substitutes was sick! Thank goodness I am working for
Highline and still Richland and have plans to complete other
teaching applications!
I am coming to Richland this coming weekend and will have some
things which will need to be given away or moved. Major
unknowns.. except that I am coming to clean up stuff and if you
need things or wish to purchase anything.. I have purchased many
survival items n Seattle.. books, clothing, towels.. planters..
tables.. normal things are for sale to fund my trip and move to
Seattle. I'll keep you posted.
Take care everyone..

Those pictures John Adkins ('62) took reminded me of when Bob
Rector ('62) took Rev. Mel Finkbeiner up in his flying machine a
few years ago. I happened to be visiting the Finkbeiners at the
time and it was a highlight in his long life. May it continue,
as he has blessed and helped many along the way. I probably
would have felt completely depressed had he not consented to do
my dad's funeral in 1999. He and his wife of over 65 years are
now in a retirement facility in the Des Moines area, and they
are over 90 I'd say it is a welcome reward for them to be there
with all their faculties as they are blessed to have. I saw them
last summer and they didn't even mention this as a possibility,
and then I wrote to say I hoped to drop by on my quick trip in
early April, and Rev. Mel wrote to say they had sold their house
in Richland, and moved back over to the other side of the
mountains.
I hate to be unloyal but I'd love to live anywhere in Washington
state, but as I look out our friend's view of the Pudget sound
and the Olympics sometimes, I keep liking that view more and
more. I do like my winter view of the Ohio River here... too...
Well, there is much to do here, so it's back to organizing...
even as a Christian, it helps to be organized...

Re: Big Kid Birthday
Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their
party... No I think that's from typing class... kinda like the
big brown dog or the fox or something... asdfjkl; but this is
way more important than that... this is a birthday... not just
any birthday but a Big Bomber Kid Birthday... this is one of
those guys that digs anything Bomber... a guy like me... mention
Bombers and he's there... course he is much older than I and I
am only allowed to join him at the big kid's table so long as I
don't spill my milk... Did I say he's an ultimate Bomber... I am
sure he will relate to this story that happened to me just the
other day... I got a BIG box in the mail... a Bankers Box...
well I knew I hadn't ordered anything lately from eBay... at
least nothing that would require such a large box... I should
have recognized the hand writing on the label right away and the
return address would have been a huge clue... but I didn't even
notice the beautiful lettering... the kind a draftsman would
use... the kind one of my best buds has used since we were in
Jr Hi all the way up to now that he's a big time Architect...
so anyway, I opened the box and there was a perfect set of jack
stands... the kind guys made in auto shop... not that I took
auto shop... I only took shop once in Jr Hi and found that they
actually expected you to make something with your time... plus
it was all guys... school is for falling in love with the girl
across the room and for day dreaming and important stuff like
that... besides the teacher (Mr. Sour ?) was not the least bit
impressed with my funky ugly letter opener and my half finished
lamp... so I avoided any class that placed results over fake
efforts (funny how my view of such things has drastically
changed over the years... but I still think I would prefer
falling in love with the girl across the room to many other
things)... I think I lost touch with the subject of this
entry... oh yeah... well in the box with the jack stands was a
note from our own Brian Lee Johnson ("Beej" '65)... in the same
impeccable hand explaining that he was sure that only I could
appreciate such a Bomber find... a set of Jack stands made by
either Phillip Phillip ('65) or Mike Jennings ('64 RIP) and
given to Beej in 1964! Well you can well imagine my joy... too
bad they were too heavy to hang on the wall... so the birthday
boy is just such a Bomber as I... one who loves Bomberdom and a
guy I am proud to call friend...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Tony Sharpe ('63) on the 16th of March!!!!!!!!!!
see ya in September, Tony!

We had our Las Vegas luncheon on the 12th of April and as usual,
it was so much fun. I took some photos but some didn't turn out
that great--way too dark--so most likely won't send any of them
along. Don't want to put photos of some who came and not others.
In attendance were the following: Roberta "Robbi" Hill Karcher ('49),
Nancy Moore ('70), Jim Nelligan ('50) and Ginny Nelligan (NAB),
Duke Smith ('50) and Daisy Clark Smith ('54), Raymond Kelly ('63),
Bonnie Steeber Frasca ('57), Lenora Hughes Bejarano ('55) and
Bob Bejarano (NAB).
It was such a delight to have Bonnie join us. We timed it right
this time so that she could attend.
Our next luncheon will be in June and I am hoping that it turns
out to be even better. I think that it will. I will let everyone
know all the particulars on that one in plenty of time.
Bomber Cheers!

Got the phone book on CD. Very generous of you, Fred. Thank you

To: Alan Lobdell ('69)
I've driven the 10 [I-10] across the US out of Biloxi, MS coming
into it from Ohio... headed to CA. The mile Post 998 as I came
into Texas was a bit much. The Alamo at San Antonio is special.
Buying small jars of pickled quail eggs, red or white, at the
local freeway gas station was a gas. Frying rabbit ear cactus in
virgin olive oil for dinner outside Van Horn was special. And
driving through El Paso/Juarez where half of the cowboys that
just robbed a bank tried to get to was interesting... to say the
least, and one of the many times I wished I listened up in the
Spanish class. Tombstone southeast of Tucson was the usual theme
town America, a disappointment, and particularly after finding
out the town burned down in 1910 and the Earps were long gone.
And by the time I hit the beach headed home I knew what a Zip's
French fry felt like. This time of year will be cooler. Given
time, you can side track off the 10 for a little drive into the
Davis Mountains where the Buffalo Soldiers had a fort. If I had
had my choice of being a Buffalo Soldier in TX or a Marine in
Vietnam, I would still choose Vietnam. I crept through Phoenix
in 114° heat in work traffic. I try staying out of huge cities.
I like the little ones. I would have stopped in Palm Springs for
a round of golf, but don't play the game. No fun in ten putting
anyway.
Both the 10 and 40 this time of year can present some
interesting fears of nature.
Personally, and only because no matter which way you go, you
have to get through the great Western United States which one
cannot truly appreciate until they have driven it, I prefer the
40. Several options out of Savannah.. obviously. I would make
my way from Savannah to Memphis. But, I would imagine you are
headed into Jacksonville, FL and catching the 10 there(?).
Mobile, AL stop in a Burger King and muck muck on a pile of
grits with that breakfast menu. In Biloxi grab a bottle of crab
boil and a pile of crawfish, roll the eyes back and enjoy. If
you go Memphis, TN route, go to Beale Street. Drive down the
street a bit farther and go visit Elvis too. But BBQ on Beale
Street was my m.o. there. Then to Little Rock, and take a gander
at Little Rock High School (LRHS) and then go get some more BBQ.
I thought Carmichael Junior High was "The Rock" until I visited
LRHS. To the Arkansas Diamond Park.. from the park, instead of
going south into Texas and the 10, go northwest to OKC to the
40. In Oklahoma you can buy Native American souvenirs about
every three miles. The billboards will get in the way of viewing
any scenery there, but for some folks, the question is "what's
to see?" Check out the huge Christian cross just outside
Amarillo coming into town. I sent a pic of that to the Alumni
Sandstorm once. Incredible in size and scope. A Texas sized
Christian cross, to say the least. Seeing this cross coming from
the East, you will realize you have escaped the Bible Belt with
your life and it is pretty much safe sailing from there. In AZ,
and not having a ton of time for exploring, go to Old Town (most
cities have this town don't they?) Albuquerque and get some Tex-
Mex, or is it Mex-Tex. Moving on, get off the freeway and drive
through (Standing on a corner in) Winslow, AZ (I believe it was
the Eagles, the band, that made this town famous)... and Route
66, of course. There are a couple of coffee shops right-smack-
middle-can't-miss-it downtown, souvenir shops, you will know it
when you see it and just stand on a corner and take it all in.
Just west of Winslow go to Meteor Crater. Don't miss this. Easy
in and out. The movie "Starman" was filmed here. Awesome sight.
$10 to get in, but since I was a veteran it cost me $9.50..
something like that. Flagstaff. I love Flagstaff in the Spring
and Fall. Go downtown and take a stroll. Wonderful dated brick
town. Old feel because as the West dated goes, it is. Have lunch
or dinner. And the elevation will cool you off... FINALLY...
well, it does in July and August. The 40 is old Route 66 – Elk
City, Seligman, Kingman, Barstow... small, interesting museums
all the way. I imagine you will come into Los Angeles through
Victorville and then get out of LA as fast as possible. Just
north of LA get on the 101, however you can, and head through
Ventura all the way to Lincoln City, OR and home. 101 is the
best. The 5, 97 and 395 have their moments, but the 101 from LA
to Aberdeen is without a doubt one of the greatest drives on
planet earth.

I had the pleasure of working with Ron Ewing for a number of
years with Boeing and Lockheed Martin (both had the IT contract
on the Hanford site). He was a huge help to me in the finance
group when I came to work at Boeing in 1991. He was fun, even
tempered and always willing to spend time helping anybody get
things done. He left Lockheed Martin in 2003 with early onset of
Alzheimer's. His funeral on Tuesday was a wonderful celebration
of his life. He spent time in the Navy, was active in amateur
radio emergency response, enjoyed tinkering with computers and
always treasured the windy days to fly one of his many kites. He
is survived by his wife Gloria among others. His obit was in the
Tri-City Herald on Monday, April 14th. On the front of the Life
Section on that day was an article, "Go fly a kite" with a
colorful picture of a kite... now what are the chances of that.

Re: All Bomber Luncheon - Richland
April's luncheon
Being April it did not shower instead the temperatures reached
into the upper 70s. The temperature was definitely hot inside
JD's. Not because of the heat but the hot conversations going
on. What a surprise with the good weather to have about our
normal size group. My apologies amongst the fun that I forgot
birthdays. Bomber's are given a piece of homemade pie on their
birthday by JD's diner and Happy Birthday sang by Missy Keeney
('59) who could not attend this time. I know birthday was
Kaylene Henjum Livingston's ('60) husband Herm. Happy Birthday
Herm.
In attendance were: Kaylene and Herm as I have already
mentioned. During introductions it became Herm's turn. He
explained to everyone what he had been through to end up with
heart surgery. The group with all there compassion let him
know how courageous he has been. What a will to live Herm. Peg
Sheeran ('63) was here from Omak and was joined for the luncheon
by her sister Katie ('61) (Katie is as chatty as ever. Always
fun stories). Some stories were told about their being Aunts to
Alaska's Governor Sarah Palin. During introductions Peg sang her
song from the play she was in in Omak. What a hoot!
Marie Ruppert Hartman ('63) made it to the luncheon after a week
with grand kids. Who says were getting older? We have grand kids
to keep us young.
Lorin St. John ('55) and Burt Pierard ('59) the new team doing
the refacing of the Richland Theater. Burt talked about what is
being done and was asking for more help. I know from Glen's wife
Carol (NAB) that Glen Rose ('58) returned from his vacation and
they are helping Lorin and Burt every day. Anyone who has time
to give a hand show up or email Burt.
Walt Wendland ('55) told stories about his time of being a cop.
Dave Rhodes ('52) stood up to introduce himself, turned to me
as if to ask how long he could talk. Dave is quite a talker
attending most of the luncheons over the past 2 years and 9
months. Finally (just kidding) limited him to 10 minutes. He and
his wife Alice ('57 Colville High School) are moving into their
new home. Big excitement and down sizing. Asked Dave to tell
another story of his cowboy days which he did.
Marilyn "Em" DeVine ('52) returned from being in Yuma, AZ with
Gus Keeney ('57) recently. Gus is on his way back up to Richland
and hopefully will be attending the next luncheon. Fred Klute
('58), forgive me Fred you were so far at the end of the table I
couldn't quite hear you. Gale Charles ('65) was in attendance
for the first time. Had lots to say. As we conversed he said, he
knew my sister Nina Jones Rowe ('65), asked me to say hello to
you Nina. Pat Doriss Trimble ('65) was immersed most of the
luncheon with the Aunts, Kaylene and who else was sitting around
them. Liz Trujillo Cooper ('70) talked about her family of
Bomber siblings (She is the sister of Ernie Trujillo ('59).
Being so much younger they would not allow her to be involved.
I think many Bombers who have older siblings can relate? When
I started the introductions I made my great, proud grandmother
announcement. My grand daughter Samantha has been excepted by
Whitworth in Spokane. She tried out for Cheerleader a couple
of weeks ago and made the team. Any Bombers who have attended
Whitworth or live near I would like to hear from you about the
school. I do not know much about the school. Have been into
their website. Looking forward to being there for a weekend
in the fall.
Thanks to all for contributing to another joyous Bomber
luncheon. Looking forward to the next luncheon on May 10th.

Re: Your Richland flight.
I live right off Bombing Range road near the ball fields. On
the phone with a friend I interrupted her to let her know that
out my living room window coming right at me, I was watching a
parachute. Could not see a person. As it got closer I told her
that it looked like there was some kind of contraption below the
parachute. Not ever seeing one before I was tickled with what
will some one think of next.
The parachute was beautiful with all of it's vibrant colors. Had
no idea it belong to a Bomber, and another Bomber was aboard.
Thanks for all the description of your trip on the buggy the
next day in the Sandstorm John. What a ride and show.

Re: Trip
Wow, Rick Maddy ('67) sure made a very interesting read of going
across the US. He said it right about Highway 101 being a great
drive. I'm a bit biased though. Living in Eureka, CA, 101 goes
right through town. This time of year is great, though, as it's
very green all up and down the coast. It's still really cool so
you won't have to worry about the weather. I can't remember when
you said that you were going on your trip. There are several
places to stop and view the ocean. You will want to drive
through the Avenue of the Giants. That's part of the original
101 highway. It's awesome to see the HUGE trees. It's about 25
miles through that section and also about an hour south of Eureka.

In school... maybe sophomore year, I remember looking at the
year book and thinking I knew every single kid in my class...
I'll bet many of you felt the same. At R2K, I was pleasantly
surprised to see that I knew a ton of kids from many classes...
One thing sure tho... I didn't know everyone from every class...
now, 8 years later, I know way more kids and have met way more
kids than I knew in 2000. Still don't know everyone (no matter
what Terry Davis ('65) or Jimbeaux ('63) say)... But there is
one kid... one very special Bomber-Babe... kind a like Little
Egypt of Coasters fame... got some a them there tattoos... but
not as big as Texas and it sure doesn't say "Phoenix Arizona
1949"... but she does have a couple... one a the best Bomber
tats around... now as I was saying... there is one Bomber-Babe
that knows a whole whole whole bunch a Bombers and almost every
Bomber around knows her... she is by all accounts the most known
and most knowing Bomber there is... OK... I know... Rex Davis
('49... was he in Phoenix?) does know a lotta Bombers and so
maybe he gets the award for knowing the most for the longest...
but it's not his birthday and no matter how young and well kept
he is... he sure ain't no Bomber-Babe... this girl is loved by
all... she is maybe the most Bomber-spirited person I know...
put's number 32 ('63) and me to shame... she is the glue that
holds us all together and the bestex in the world... and her
birthday is on April 19th... (I recall something about Mt St
Helens or the Chicago fire... or maybe the SF Earthquake
happening one year just in her honor)... if ya ain't guessed by
now... It is Maren Smyth's ('63-'64)special day...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Everyone,
I am finally sorting out my thoughts re the Seeds of Compassion
event which occurred last weekend and on into the week. I
attended 3 days: the main event seeing the Dali Lama on
Saturday... was astounding and wonderful. I am always in awe
and humble at the immense effort to coordinate such an event
as this in Seattle. Everything went smoothly. People were
very peaceful. The interesting thing which mews media told us
about... that day in particular after the Dali Lama... there was
a sold out professional hockey game and the downtown area was
to be flooded all day with over 60,000 people. There were no
traffic problems!! OK for me at least. i took the bus each way.
No big snarls which I could see.
I attended workshops Sunday and Monday which were outstanding. I
am interested in ways to work with children to prevent violence
and to nurture their capabilities to be creative and whole
people thus contributing to their capabilities to academic
excellence in their areas. I attended Nonviolent Communication..
always excellent information and techniques
Teaching UNICEF... they have free downloadable curriculums
OSPI's ReneeAnn - Your Life is Your Art... wonderful and
inspiring
Getting out of Gangs - very moving
Anti-Bullying... good
and spent some time talking to many program providers and idea
people.
I will be sending some info to Richland Schools as part of my
committee member work for the Safety Committee and to the TCH
as well. I also provided a few folks with resumes.
I am very interested in several cultural exchange programs which
I gathered information on. Bridges, UNICEF, the Happiness
Project. More later

Don't know about you but I have 3" of snow on my deck and yard
this morning. Dude, it is APRIL 19th for crying out loud. Where
is Al Gore and his global warming hype. This is the latest in
the history of our area, and maybe of all lowland Washington,
that we have had snow. Whilst it is beautiful and I took my
Christmas tree down to soon, they have had to cancel the Tulip
Run, a bunch of high school baseball games, a track meet, a
Fly-In locally and a lot of stuff. The biggest question will be
if there is any damage to the Tulips and Daffodils that are now
in full bloom in the Skagit Valley and this is more than just a
dusting of snow. By the way, attendance at the Tulip Festival is
usually around 300,000 and 350,000 but they think that because
it has been so cold and overcast this year that it might not hit
100,000 and about a third of that came on our one sunny warm day
last Saturday (78F). Was that day our summer? Stay tuned.

So far, a lot of folks have asked for the 1956 phone book. It's
still available, and if you want one just send an email with
your name and address to BomberPhoneBook@aol.com. There is no
charge, but if you like what you get feel free to send a few

To everyone who thinks global warming means only hotter temps:
you need the read Al Gore's book, EARTH IN THE BALANCE. Global
warming means many abnormal weather patterns, some sustained and
others freakish in nature. Hope that helps people understand
more. We have had our share of very cold spring weather and a
long winter here in St. Louis. We, like you, are really ready
for the warmth of Spring and hope we don't go immediately to our
long, hot summers. I keep tabs on Western Washington weather,
as I call my Mom daily and it seems that this year it has been
mainly cold and/or rainy. We wish you sunshine and flowers
(especially for the Mt. Vernon Tulip Festival).

The car in the picture looks like a 1948 Buick. My dad used to
have one. I could be wrong about the year since the '47 through
'49s were similar. From the grill, it doesn't look like it
could be a '53 Packard or a '48 Olds or Pontiac. See the

Hi Everyone,
From Wallingford where it snowed and then the sun came out all
day yesterday. I can see snow on the foot hills everywhere from
here. My friend in Monroe just called with 6 inches of snow.
Thank goodness I bought enough sweaters from Goodwill these past
few months.
I am still sorting through materials which I got from the Seeds
of Compassion resource fair and work shops. I sent a brief note
to Richland for the school safety committee and also to the
Tri-City Herald. The publisher sent me copies of the letters
which had been printed in the TCH recently from the Community
Conversations group which I had been selected to participate in
but got notice too late to change my schedule over here. I was
particularly impressed with how the RHS principal expressed
himself. I never had a chance to substitute there, but had asked
Debby Hickey to add high school to my possibilities and then
ended up over here.
As Highline schools have a very different socio-economic
situation than Richland for the most part, I hesitate to work
in high school in here at this time.
How is everyone in Bellingham and farther north with snow?
If you are a teacher or have a relative working as a teacher
please feel free to contact me about the bullying prevention
materials I have gathered.
My next project which dovetails in with this is that I have been
offered a chance to represent substitute teachers in Highline
with HEA. I am also a member of the WEA Peace and Justice caucus
and may take some leadership with this. I love leadership..
sorry folks.. none o this was available to me in Richland
recently and I am flying right now. Love my childhood and the
wonderful educational benefits which we received, but I need to
be out of the nest with brief return visits.

Funny, Donna Bowers Rice ('63) about what you mentioned
that global warming causes weird weather. Someone at church
yesterday, mentioned that global warming can make the
temperature lots cooler than we are used to. Its been very cold
here in Eureka this winter and spring is no where to be found.
Was chatting on the computer with my son yesterday and he
mentioned that when he left Spokane, it was snowing. Sounds like
the whole state got snow. We've had snow this past weekend in
the mountains. It looks really pretty. Loved the picture that
you sent in, Ron Richards ('63), of Port Angeles. I've saved it

Maren,
I just want to thank you for all the work you do for the rest of
us Bombers. My brother Richard Trujillo ('62) was always telling
to read the site and how informative it is. I really enjoy the
stories. It reminds of what wondrous, fun times we had in a
simpler world.
Re: Patti Jones Aherns ('60) Bomber Luncheon Entry
I just to say thanks to all the wonderful girls of the late '50s
and early '60s that knew my brother Ernie Trujillo ('59) and
were so kind to give me donuts and cookies at all the bakeries.
There are some benefits to having a popular older brother. For
those of you who don’t know Ernie, he was a cheerleader and Tolo
King in '59. Those were some great times. I remember many of his
friends, Dick Nelson ('59), Dennis Cearlock ('59-RIP), Sandy
Cross ('59) and others stopping by the house to get ready to go
to a dance. And you all thought girls primped a lot. Since the
crew cut was the style then, I could never understand what took
them so long to comb their hair, but I was only six then so what
did I know. If I was lucky, one of the guys would need to work
out a dance step and since I was the only girl around I got to
dance with all those handsome young men (it didn't help me a
lot, I still have two left feet). With 6 older brothers and
their friends around you would have thought my mother would
have figured out how I became so boy crazy at such a young age.
Maren, I don’t have a problem with you editing anything I write.
I worked in the Publications Dept. for Boeing Computer Services
for several years. I'm just rambling so have fun."

Re: the beach
Linda McKnight Hoban ('65) and I drove to Lincoln City and Depoe
Bay last weekend and had a blast while walking on the beach
looking for rocks, sunning ourselves on the deck while being
pelted by hail, eating clam chowder, having pie to die for,
drinking wine, watching the debate (without arguing!), yakking
up a storm, listening to the waves and breathing the wonderful
wonderful air!!
It is such a wonderful thing to be able to enjoy our beautiful
beaches, I hope our future generations are able to also and I
hope there is air to breathe!!
The only problem is that when you get there you have to turn
around and drive home!!!!
We really had nice weather while there even though it hailed
and I had a nice drive home except for huge black storm clouds
pelting out hail for an hour around Lacey and Chehalis!
Happy Spring to everyone and hopefully May will bring only
showers and not snow!!!
P.S. Kathy Berkeley McLean ('63) and I had a wonderful reunion
while having vanilla cokes and looking at our childhood pictures
and reliving our wonderful wonderful memories of Richland. I
stopped off to visit Kathy on the drive home from Linda's and it
was so great to see her!!!!
Re: jumping rope in the '50s
Just wondering if anyone remembers the words to the song we sang
while jumping rope in the '50s? The one that started out "Not
last night but the night before, twenty four robbers came a
knockin' at my door" Then it went something like "someone came
in and someone went out" but I cannot remember the rest. I
looked it up on MSN and also on Google and the words they use
do not ring a bell with me! I know we had different words but
cannot remember them!!
Kathy reminded me of how great Barbara Berkeley Charelle ('63)
and I were at jumping rope and the pogo stick and how much she
loved hop scotch!! Those were the days! All the outside games we
played, all day long and half the night. It was the best!!
No wonder we were all in such great shape!
Bomber Cheers!

Just got off the phone to my bestest friend, Kenny Dame ('68) on
his Birthday that I managed to miss... gonna have to update my
yellow sticker policy very soon... If you forget to put the
stupid sticker on your computer it just don't get done around
here... Kenny is the Brother of that knock-out Bomber-Babe,
Connie ('65) and has always been one of those guys I knew I
could call on at a moment's notice... When Simpson ('65) was too
sick to travel to our yearly gathering and wanted us to do a
Sorry 7 cruise for him, Kenny was right there... that was the
memorable day that Terry Davis ('65) announced his undying love
for Ronna Jo Lynch ('65)... course he forgot to tell RJ...
instead, he had Connie call RJ and tell her that Terry "liked
her" ala 3rd grade messaging... And of course you know Connie is
that girl Heidlebaugh ('65) and I just love to recognize from
the back... Oh Bomber-babes are the best aren't they!... Quick
story then I gotta go... the other day I was at an interview
with some union and another candidate for another Department
showed up a little early... this fellow is one of those kids I
couldn't stand in Law School... loud, obnoxious and full of
himself (he was actually asked to shut up yesterday at a
Republican Women's luncheon... not a class act like someone we
know) ... anyway this guy and I were talking about home towns
and I mentioned I was from Richland (I actually never mention
it... I announce it!)... I said my campaign colors were my high
School colors... he asked if that was the school Michael Rawlins
(a local Bomber lawyer here... just don't know what year) went
to... the one that has the mushroom cloud for a symbol... never
a shy boy I said hell yes and pulled up my pant leg to reveal my
R/cloud tattoo... well the guy just blanched... it was the
greatest thing I've ever seen... He was totally blown away and
actually shut up for a few minutes!
Well HAPPY BIRTHDAY a day late to my dear friend Kenny!!!!!!!!!

I got an email telling me that my entries were very interesting.
Then the next day someone commented that I was always writing

Anyway this coming weekend is the World Rhythm Festival... at
Seattle Center. I am advance liaison. Come on down..The link is
at swps.org... it's all free and lots of fun. The teachers are
international level.. etienne's group when performing for the
Seattle Art Museum.. has a ticket price which ranges from 15-35
and likely more. He travels all over the world to teach and
perform. Many others are of same caliber.
I am tired to day.. no substituting because of the WASL.... hmm..
Looks like the rain will disappear and we may have sun.
Has anyone been up to the Skagit valley recently this year? How
are the tulips? The crowds?
happy Earth day week

PS If anyone is coming over from Richland and can bring a few
things for me I would deeply appreciate it.

After talking to an organizer of the summer event it looks like
the entertainment will be held in the Uptown parking lot across
from Dairy Queen. Easy for me as in walking distance. The
Kingsmen return for Friday and DJ the Mike Harvey show is
Saturday. Looks like oldies have moved ahead a decade cause he
calls it the '60s to the '80s. It may not be everyone's cup of
tea but it is a good event for the town. Any live music is good
because there are not too many night clubs around town featuring
a variety of music, if any. I wonder if there will be a beer
garden in the parking lot. I guess I can have more than one
since I will be walking.

Re: Searching Can Help Benefit our Animal Rescue Group
Hi to all the Bombers out there. I wanted to let you know
that our animal rescue group has joined a website called
http://www.goodsearch.com/
For those who may not know this search site, when you use
GoodSearch.com they will donate a penny to a registered non-
profit organization on their list for every search you do on
the internet thru them.
When you pull the website up you can type in our rescue group's
name - Columbia Animal Rescue Effort in the box marked Who Do
You Search For... From there you can go to the search box and
start searching.
We joined them April 10th and since then our rescue organization
has received $1.80 from people searching the internet.
This may not seem very much to most people, but to us and me
being a foster home for the past 6 years, every little bit helps
with our rescued or abandoned pets who sometimes come to us
in such a mess from sickness or neglect that food & medical
attention is required to help save them. Because we do not have
a shelter, all of the pets live in our homes until ready for
adoption. Our rescues are spayed and neutered if needed and
always current on their vaccines.
Everyone loves to search the web, so every time you search, just
think, at the same time your helping to find a loving forever
home for a neglected or unwanted rescued pet.
Just so you can see, this is Baby Frito,
AlumniSandstorm.com/htm2008/Xtra/Any/080424-Lysher-BabyFrito.jpg
his Siamese/Snowshoe mother was left abandoned, hungry, sick and
pregnant. I rescued her and her babies. She had 3 babies but
unfortunately 1 didn't make it. Frito and his sister Tookie are
now going on 6 wks old and just happy healthy kids, plus their
mom is healthy and will be ready for her new home when the kids
are 8 wks and ready for adoption.
To all of you that may use GoodSearch.com, a Thank You from me
and the members of our rescue group. Thank you for helping them.

Re: 55th Reunion
You are cordially invited to join your classmates of the Class
of 1953 in celebrating our 55th Reunion on Friday, September 5
and Saturday, September 6, 2008. We are a featured part of the
Club 40 festivities at the Clarion Hotel on George Washington
Way in Richland.
The buffet menu for both evenings offers something delicious
for everyone, and you will appreciate how the Clarion has been
renovated and upgraded. The mission on Friday is to visit one
another without the noise and distraction of a dance band. The
band arrives Saturday and provides great entertainment as it
plays all the best music from our era.
Our group photo will be taken on Friday and/or Saturday
afternoon before the social hour and dinner.
This time around the block, our plans are simple, but we are
completely open to suggestions and on-the-spot volunteers. We
keenly appreciate the opportunity to get together one more
time on our journey through life. If you haven't made it to a
reunion, NOW IS THE TIME! We're a very friendly bunch, and we'd
love to see you!
When you receive the Dust Storm next month, register directly
with Club 40. If you haven't paid Club 40 dues, go to

In about a week, there will be a 2008 Registration Form for

I just wanted to send you a quick greeting from Ismir, Turkey
where we are on a fantastic tour of a very small part of the
huge history of this country. Today we have been to Pegamon,
yesterday we were at Troy, and tomorrow we are going to Ephesus
to follow a little of Paul's footsteps.
There is separation of church and state here and the people are
very friendly and the food is good, the rooms clean and we have
a good guide and bus driver, what more could we want... maybe
more time.....
This computer has some strange keys, so please forgive my
mistakes. I've tried without success to fix them and others are
waiting for the machine.

excavation today in sun, wind, and rain about 65° and the
wild flowers including red poppys were blooming. Lovely...

I also saw the story about the Johnson company using a land
fill to power their company complex. A while back there was
a guy either in Richland or Spokane that had found a way to
burn garbage to make power and not have a lot of left overs.
Only problem, they sent him to prison and I never did hear
what happened to him and his process after that.

Hi Everyone,
It is indeed a busy weekend.. few people have contributed
lately [to the Sandstorm].
OK that leaves more room for me to write! I am just kidding.
I really want to know what others are doing and thinking.
I am getting ready to go down to the Seattle center for the
third day of the World Rhythm Festival. I love it. I danced
yesterday for 3 different dance classes and was pretty tired
and sore when I got home. Of course, some of the tiredness comes
always from getting up at about 5 am to walk in my lovely new
neighborhood.
Today I go back again. Most will be pretty tired this morning as
there was a huge drum and dance party which I did not stay for..
being the early riser whom I am.
The international level and local and all.. instructors, dancers,
guests were happy, danced, shared and enjoyed much. It is a
volunteer organization and the work to carry off and organize an
event like this is huge. My past major event work comes in handy
to my superiors and it appears I have a job promotion for next
year with them! Now for a promotion for a real paying job!!!!
DUM DUMM DUMM DE DUM...

The "Procession of the Species" celebration in downtown Olympia
was another success. The parade on Saturday evening was
rainless, sunny and warm. An accurate description is impossible
but there were bees on wheels; pink flamingos and other samba
groups with drummers; representations of creatures, plants,
atmospheric and celestial bodies to list a few. Anybody that
wants to be in the parade is invited (there are a few rules
such as no motorized anything, no pets, yada yada). Many other
attractions through out the downtown area throughout the day.
Art displayed in stores and in the park. All tastefully done,
something to experience for everyone any age.

Festering pools of spite form The Sandbox... there are no
winners just a bag of 'dirt' to be slung around until someone
gets their feelings hurt. Let's leave well enough alone and
allow our friends at ABC, CBC, NBC & Fox to continue their
fine job of 'anti-this' and 'anti-that' or 'for-this' and
'for- that.' At my age I can't make up my own mind so I need
someone to tell me who to vote for and which scientist is right
or wrong. Salute!

Re: Wow...I'm a real boy!
Well the powers that be have finally approved my web site so I'm
sending it with this little note. My neighbor (she lives with
her kids but she's about my age) was outside smoking the other
night when I pulled in for the second night in a row from
attending some function about midnight. She called a nice
"hello" and then said she figured I must be just exhausted...
boy she got that right. Very few days and nights I don't have
this or that to go to on this campaign trail. I can't even
imagine what one must go through to become a Senator or
something like that. At least this (tho a State position) is
only county wide. In the old days I could have walked a few
blocks driven a bit and walked some more and about hit everyone
in the county... now with over 2 million people it is really
tough to get the word out. Many of the Donut Delinquents have my
magnetic signs on their hot rods and I put out 1000 signs county
wide. You can imagine these huge 4' X 8' signs all over the
valley... Green and Gold just brimming with Bomberdom... When I
say "I"... I really mean Don the sign guy... please don't feel
sorry for him... believe me he is pretty darn well paid to do
it... I got a call I had been dreading after the 60 MPH winds
the other day... of course one of my signs lodged up against a
lady's car and stayed there rubbing itself against her paint
for 6 hours... how did she know? Surveillance camera caught the
whole thing on film. Don the sign guy looked at it and took pix,
suggesting he thought it would require new paint... I called the
people and went over and inspected myself... I couldn't get any
paint color with spit (the universal cleaner), but told the
Doc and his nurse (just my luck) that I would come by Saturday
morning and attempt to buff it out myself... they were kinda
shocked... Saturday morning after the donut shop I headed over
with my trusty buffer and magic buffing juice... tried a little
on a rag to make sure it would work... thankfully it did and so
a little very fine wet sandpaper, a little compound I bought at
the Grand National Roadster Show (totally magic stuff... System
One X3 Cutting Polish), and some Race Glaze to top it off and
her car looked like brand new... coarse the rest of her car
looked like it needed a good waxing but I had done my job...
less than a half an hour and I had the votes of these two good
folks and the good will of their fitness center... so from there
I changed clothes and was off to another function... kiss kiss
shake shake... kiss kiss... shake... all in a day's work... so
anyway... here's my web site... and now I'm just like a real boy!

Has anyone living in the West Richland/Richland area used
Satellite TV? If so, have you had any issues with wind, ice,
snow, poor service? Is one provider preferred over another?
-Barbara von Olnhausen ('62)

[Barbara, I've had satellite TV (DirecTV) since 1995 or so.
Issue I had (on the Columbia River out of Chelan and also in
Okanogan county) was snow on the dish. I'd brush the show off
the dish and problem solved! -Maren]

After going to the dentist the other day and figuring out how
much insurance will pay for a crown, I was trying to think if my
Dad had medical or dental insurance while working at Hanford. I
thought I'd just ask some of the Bomber historians. What did
families have for medical and dental coverage who were employed
at Hanford?

Thanks to those who gave me ideas about driving across country.
My son and I left Savannah, GA on Sat. April 19th and took I-40
to Texarkana so we could spend a day at the Arkansas Diamond
Park looking for diamonds. Of course we did not find any however
an 11 year old girl found a nice half caret yellow diamond when
we were there.
We had been told of thunder storms and flooding throughout the
southern states and yet we drove in sunshine and clear sky all
the way. I was somewhat surprised when the distance was far
greater then both the Internet and my atlas said it was. Both
said from Savannah to Palm Springs and then to Kent, WA was 3410
miles. We drove 4,863 miles. A little more then planned on.
One good note was that when I lost my wife to breast cancer in
'03 the only thing I was able to save (lost home, property,
retirements, to cancer battle) was our Trendwest membership (now
Wyndom). Bryan and I only had to get a hotel room twice in ten
days. We were able to stay in a very nice condo 8 nights over
the trip. The cost of the condos was from 32 to 54 dollars a
night. Beats the heck out of a hotel room.
We were surprised at the border of California when they
inspected our load and asked if we were bringing in a barbecue
or lawn chairs. Didn't know there was a problem with those
things but apparently there is. You don't want to smuggle a
barbecue or lawn chairs into California.
We averaged 18 miles to a gallon and still cost me almost a
thousand dollars in gas to get across. I feel sorry for the
trucking industry.
Of the entire trip there are two places I never want to see
again, Alabama and Palm Springs. New Mexico was ok except for
I-40 being under construction across the entire state.
It was a long trip but it was fun. I can't think of anything
better to do with one of your kids than take a long trip across
country just the two of you. You really learn a lot about your
offspring that you might never find out. And they are willing to
tell you things about their brothers and sisters that you never
knew.
Home again and time to go back to work
