Pete OVERDAHL ('60-RIP) will be sadly missed. His work and
contributions to Club 40 and the Conley-Ritchie Scholarship were
outstanding. So long, Pete, it has been good to know you.

It is the birthday of a Bomber Babe. A truly nice person and her

What a shock to see that Pete has passed away. He was such a
vital part of our Alumni and will be greatly missed. I do
believe he was just about the nicest person in our class of '60.
He lived just a block from me and I went from grade school thru
high school with him. Just a few years ago he thanked me for
trying to teach him to dance in junior high. He was such a very
good person, I will miss him. My prayers are with his beautiful
wife, Maggie.

>>From: David RIVERS ('65)
Re: I really don't like losing dear friends
Before I start, I need to respond to Q's ('62) question in his
May Day post: "Duh, yes." Nuff said.
I first met Pete OVERDAHL ('60-RIP) by either email or phone.
Now as a kid 5 years his junior, I was well aware of his name,
but didn't know of him personally. There are some names that I
have always sounded really cool. I remember overhearing some of
the coaches one time saying that Mike BOTU ('65-RIP) had one of
those names that just screamed for athletic stardom (no they
didn't say it that way but you get the idea)... I felt Pete had
one of those just inherently cool names... I have a bit of a
lisp if I don't think of what I am saying before I say it and
David RIVERS is a set of letters strung together that are very
difficult for me to say (I know... been saying it for over 66
years and ya'd think I'd have mastered it by now)... so I can
get impressed with names... like Bo Belinsky... it just sounds
cool even if ya didn't know Bo... Some names gain their coolness
from the owner and his life as with our own Number 10 ('64) and
Number 32 ('63)... There are cool Bomber-babe names too, like
"Kippy Lou" ('62)... ok so I'm nuts... but it's the way I see
things... So Pete was preparing for a reunion of his old Air
Force buddies to be held in Las Vegas and he either emailed me
or called me to see if I could help him out. He was looking for
a specific type of German beer with the little porcelain caps,
which was what they drank in Germany. I assured him I could
locate the beers he wanted in the qualities he needed (I think
he wanted to make sure every guy got at least 2)... So I
contacted the largest retailer in town (OK I lied... Michelle
contacted them) and they assured us they could supply us. At
the time I had not yet started representing the retailer so full
price was required... now ya gotta unnerstan... just because
I represent this guy now, things have changed a lot in Vegas
so I mighta hadda pay full price anyway... Back in the day, I
represented nearly all of the major hotel/casinos... one of the
perks of representation was what they call "comps"... that means
I could and did see anyone I wanted at shows in the good seats
for free... I still have one former client (the sons have
taken their Dads' place) that gives me comps but I am kinda
embarrassed to call them any more... When I call, I just want
front row seats but they don't stop at that and comp me too...
so on the day the reunion started, Michelle and I drove over to
the meeting place and met Maggie and Pete to drop off the booze.
Since that time Pete and I had a great friendship and we always
met up when I was in town. Now a few years back, I thought we
all agreed that none of us would get sick any more. I guess that
pact was something to wish and hope for but beyond the power
even of Mighty, Mighty Bombers. So for Maggie and alla Pete's
friends I wanna say I join you in wishing Pete to rest in peace.
We know he will.

Hi Bombers,
A quick note... it has been 5 years since I returned to Seattle.
I am so grateful to be back, through employment transition, very
rainy winters and some summertimes I remain happily a waterside
child.
You may have seen me and the other 999 in red shirts on our
legislatures' steps holding signs for smaller class sizes on the
news last weekend. I remain committed to education. I am quite
involved in yoga here and invite Bomber friends to connect up
sometime.

Re: Pete OVERDAHL ('60-RIP)
Just can't believe we have lost such a wonderful man in
Bomberville!!!
Pete and I were talking the day before about helping with the
raffle at Club 40 celebration in September. He and I were going
to sell tickets at the door on Friday and Saturday nights.
(Please let me know if any of you reading this want to help with
me at the table) Danny HAGGARD ('57) will be selling tickets on
the floor on Saturday as Glen ROSE ('58) (who runs this raffle)
will be at his class reunion. I know the unfinished cork
birdhouse sitting on his work bench at home is meant for the
raffle drawing!!! Pete and one of our board members had just
spoken at 10:30 am the morning he passed away!!! They say his
heart attack was sudden and he did not suffer!!! Thank God!!!
In the Herald article today they mentioned Pete loved sending
cards to people for special things. I was lucky enough to have
received one of his cards last week, thanking me for the report
on the food menu for Club 40 that I gave at our board meeting on
April 27th. He has always been such a kind, considerate person.
I also shared things with Pete at the Tri-Cities Cancer Center
where he was in the Men's Club and I in the Guild. We decorated
Christmas trees together and helped at the center when needed.
What a special guy!!
Miss you, Pete, just saying your name!! I will be paying my
respects to you at your service on May 11th!!!
Rest In Peace!!!

What a loss to Bomber Nation. I talked with Pete's wife, Maggie,
and mentioned perhaps creating a Pete Overdahl Memorial
Scholarship. She said Pete would love that. We don't want to
compete with current or future plans of Club 40, but I can't
think of a better person to memorialize. Pete was the kind of
person we all wish we were. Maggie said that his obituary will
recommend donations to the local cancer society or a charity of
your choice. Hopefully, we can put something together.

We both grew up on the 1300 block of Torbett, his house on the
opposite side of the street and diagonal corner from mine. His
family moved away soon there after but I know my late mother
always talked about him since as she worked for the Richland
Police Department and he, of course, became a Washington State

Ken ELY ('49RIP) was a terrific classmate; dedicated,
enthusiastic, hard working and had a wonderful sense of humor.
In his retired life, after a career in the Air Force, he served
as a major volunteer for the annual jazz festival held in the
Sacramento, CA, area. An event that drew thousands of people
from all over the world with double digit figures for venues all
over the city. He was one of the organizers and was proud of his
work. I know this as Carol TYNER Roberts ('52) and I took my
parents (my dad was a Dixieland jazz fan) to the festival many
years ago and Ken made our visit comfortable, gave us insight
on the entire event and was a magnificent representative. Later,
Joe WILSON ('49), Rick REED ('49) and I, met at Joe's nearby
home a couple of times to recall those good old Bomber days over
a few beers. Lots of fun. Ken will be missed.

gender. We've made a lot of great memories over the years with
our trips, and we're still making memories even though we can't
stay up all night eating shrimp cocktails and playing games. The
whole experience has been about being together and having a good
time with each other. These times are becoming more precious

Re: The birthdays keep a comin'
Well, I can see I need to add a few Cole ('50,'52,'55) Bomber-
babes to my cheat sheet... since I already have the other three
Cole kids this would be the largest famblie HB so far... I will
do my best to update it so I don't miss anyone... but this will
be a challenge to rival the "W" Bomber-babes ('60,'63,'66,'67)..
I sure hope I'm up to the task... I will say that our Home town
editor and my bestex will often send me a little note to make
sure I haven't forgotten... usually, but not always I just
haven't sat down at the computer yet... now as a total dinosaur
ya gotta unnerstan my cheat sheet is just that... a long paper
list of b-days. Those dates are transferred monthly to a yellow
stickie which is pasted to one of the speakers and if I maka
mistake transferring (as I often do) I'm in big trubel... today
I'm pretty early on my post... when I'm at work I try and get
them going before I get busy doing something work related as
once I focus I don't change directions very easily... but today
is the "prep" day for a "procedure" I made the mistake of
broadcasting in the SS a couple of months ago when I made the
pointment... May was waaaaaaay off in the future and I was just
fine with that... Kinda like in March, when Ann ENGEL Schafer
('63) made the mistake of telling me she and Tony (NAB but
almost from all the lunches he's been to) would be here for a
visit... I let all the local Bombers know that I would be
bringing them to the Bomber Lunch... I was two months early...
she'll be here next weekend... duh... just did the same thing
with Laura PARKER ('65) and John FOSTER ('65)... they said
they'd see me Friday... I got all weirded out thinking I had
forgot something... they meant at the '65er gathering which
starts onna Friday... (this is starting to sound like a Karen
COLE ('55) post WITH alla goofy spelling... of course you should
know that my spelling comes from the fact that I refused to read
as a kid, never learned how ta spell and refused to learn my
times tables... it is a total defense mechanism... so that if I
screw up it goes unnoticed... well kinda unnoticed)... Oh before
I launch into the b-days I gotta tell ya... When I cleared out
the office of my big stuff, I also relocated the "scale"... The
scale was the one used to weigh many of our parents (and maybe
even some of you who worked at Hanford) AND most of us when
Dr. Corrado moved it to his office in 1954. On my 60th b-day,
John CORRADO ('64) and Janine RIGHTMIRE Corrado ('65) gave me
the scale. It is now prominently displayed in my house rather
than at my office... I'm sending pix of the scale with this post
unless I forget, in which case I'm not... OK... time for the

Re: Pete OVERDAHL ('60-RIP)
I am saddened by the passing of Pete. We were not "close"
friends, but I admired the many good things he did for Club 40,
and I like to think that he felt the same about me. We had a
Board planning meeting last April 20 at the Richland library,
and when I entered the foyer, he was the first person I saw.
He said "Hi, Dick. How ya doin'?" I replied that I was doing
fine and he replied the same. Of course he wasn't. He never
mentioned his affliction to me, but I wish he had. I am a 20
year survivor next June, and I would have liked to talk to him
about our mutual problem.
It wouldn't have changed anything, but we would have had a
closer understanding about each other. As it is, I feel a much
deeper feeling for Pete's passing, much as tho for a "close"
friend.

Re: Pete OVERDAHL ('60-RIP)
I have not yet come to grips with the recognition that Pete is
suddenly gone and no longer part of my life. I really got to
know Pete while serving with him on the Club 40 Scholarship
Committee for four years. I have never met a man who gave so
much and expected so little in return. I told him once that
he was retired and should slow down and "smell the roses." He
immediately responded that he couldn't do that because when he
just sits, his arthritis flares up and then he has to go to
rehab. Besides, he said, there is just too much that needs to
be done. If I remember correctly, Pete has had 12 surgical
procedures (mainly related to his joints, rotator cuff, hip,
knees, etc.) since he retired, but they didn't seem to slow him
down much or reduce his productivity. Pete was always a man of
his word, and when he had a job to do you always got what was
promised plus a little extra.
I am very proud to be a friend of Pete OVERDAHL. My heart goes
out to Maggie for her loss. He will be missed by all those who
knew him.

It seems like it was exactly 49 years ago today, me thinks it
was a Friday, in fact I know it was a Friday, a Wazzu Friday. We
were in Dr. Rahm's Geology 101 class. As always I was seated in
close to proximity to Mary Lou and Ellen, who not only always
smelled good but both took excellent notes. I was unable to
follow the lecture on aphanitic basalt or some other entrancing
igneous rock, 'cause I could not figure out what they were
babbling about. I mean they ware wound up, hyperventilating and
in an almost trance like stye that couldn't exactly be described
as Verklempt, but more like the Beattles on Ed Sullivan
hysteria. Turned out it was over some "Field Day" that was
maybe only celebrated in the Palouse.

I don't think my two named buddy, Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES

his HB's inna SS... for a Squid, he ain't a bad guy... for a
Squid... I've been hearing about the 8th of May for ever now and
since I went to ASU, I guess it wasn't celebrated there... ML
('63) and Ellen ('63) always say they are gonna spane it... but
they never do... I think they think it makes them feel like big
time Seniors to have a secret they don't share with a lowly
Soph... That's what I think!... so anyway, oh hey... have the
rest of you coach flyers noticed how cramped the seats are on
planes these days/ My ride to Phoenix yesterday was only an hour
up and an hours back, but my neck and back feel as tho I flew
across the pond! I must say I did get felt up coming back. I
really think they should have girls do that for the guys...
doubt the girls feel the same way, 'cept maybe one girl from '63
who once went by the name: "for a good time and a fuzzy sweater
call"... I always wear suspenders... I got no ass and so they
really do hold my pants up and I'm not even a fireman... now I
had no trouble with the full nekud (either buck or butt) scanner
as they could see that the metal was on the braces... but the
normal metal detector was a problem... the guy asked if I wanted
to take them off or have a "little" pat-down... rather than have
may pants fall down and lose my totally cool image I opted for
the pat down... holy crap... I'da paid for a drive in, Zips and
a drive to Benton City back inna day for something like that
from Ms fuzzy sweater... Nuff said... so this guy and I have
become great friends over the past several years... I knew of
him at Col-Hi but our paths didn't really cross... I coveted his
name since I first heard it... I won't go thru the cool name
explanation again... since it plays out much better in my back
and forth discussions with my self than it does in print... He
has enriched my music collection greatly and it's always fun to
run into each other on my trips to Richland... even if it's only
to find a package at the Hotel which he has so thoughtfully
dropped off for me... I think the last few years he's been
playing Mr. Pyrotechnic (or is it Pirate Technician... can't
recall) so we've kinda missed each other the last couple of
years in person... HAPPY BIRTHDAY Chuck LOLLIS ('64) on your

ask quickly without complaint and he really knows what he is
doing". Chuck is now a welcome member on any of several crews

Second: The '65er gathering is coming up on June 21st thru the

Cecilia BENNETT's ('65) house on GWWay starting around 5 or
so... bring booze, water, soda and food. We'll have some stuff
there but we can always use more and that way Lyman ('65) has
food to take home to keep him going for the next week. Saturday,
we will party hardy at Ruth Simpson's place. Time to be
announced. We'll see if Beej is up to serving breakfast at his
place Sunday morning before everyone leaves. ALSO we will be
doing the dedication of the Steve SIMPSON ('65-RIP) bench
during the week end. Jane Beyer has taken the job of making
arrangements and I'll try and keep you all informed. If you
would like to donate for the bench, please email me and I'll

reasonably within question at times... like there was the

form... well ok a couple a times I have stretched the truth...
like the time I told this girl that it was "thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat
big" and then she saw the little guppy I caught at Wellsian
"lake" in the second grade... so I'm guilty, I confess! Hope
Frank's b-day was a good one. Someone questioned how I was gonna
keep track of the b-days when I left my office... the answer is
prolly rather badly... but at least my yellow stickies will be

the weekend ones home on Friday... I settled my last case for
my 4th to last client Friday and I was totally 'zawsted but it
ain't no 'scuse so that's that... sometimes I gotta laugh at the
kinds of money is involved in some of these cases... for some of
these people the term "millions" is like most of it look at much
smaller numbers... MUCH smaller numbers... eww eww... Ow ow?
(I'm trying to sound like Horshack, but our letters don't do
well for that sound)... The Bomber Vegas lunch was small but
nice... sometimes intimate is gooder 'n big... .I think Ann

they hadda ride to and back from the Luxor in my un-air
conditioned F-1 Pickup (no more cars with back seats inna

Re: 'nuther May b-day... Bomber-babes rule
All right... I ain't buyin this "no birthdays on Mommie's
Day"... there just ain't no way no how in alla Bomberdom, there
isn't one kid who had his b-day on Mommie's Day... time fer
somebody to fess up!!!!!!!!!! With that said, I think I figgered
out my problem... got up good and early on Mommie's day and sat
buy the phone for about an hour... OK maybe it was more than an
hour... I'm not proud... I can admit it... thought that little
clue on my status as a orphan might get me a few jingles... no
such luck... I checked the dial on the phone... yup it turns the
way it should... then I thought maybe the people on the party
line had forgot to hang up the phone... but not like the old
dayz... I mean I don't even know who they are... then it hit
me... some Bomber-babes prolly forgot how it works... OK
girls... when you call... you don't actually spell out BEachwood
on the phone... If ya don't remember WHitehall then it's time
fer a little lesson... ya see look on your phone... see how it
has numbers and letters? You only use the first two letters...
so in my case you dial 234-5789 not 232245789... so next time ya
get the desire (and you know you will) to pick up the ol' phone
and make that call that's how you do it... hmmmmmm maybe that
was a mistake... I mean if I've explained all that, and no
Bomber-babes call... oh no no no I don't even wanna think about
it... the shame... the disgrace... (hey ML ('63), do me a favor
and call me 6 times... Ellen ('63) call me another 6... I'd call
you butchou always hang up) then I'll report all the calls I got
and we can put the "for a good time call" back on the girl's gym
wall... I really think it will work this time... I really do...
so what if I didn't get a single call in the last 40 something
years... it prolly got smeared... so I am sure there was a good
purpose to this post... I'd better check the "re" line... oh
sure... Birthday time!!!!!!!!!! I wuz just spoofin'... I didn't
really ferget... HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Peggy STULL ('64) on your
special day, May 13, 2013!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Challenge for the class of '56
My family is putting on a golf tournament June 29th, 2013, to
raise money for Multiple Myeloma Research. My husband, Leon,
passed away from this nasty cancer in 2007. This is our third
tournament. We donated $5,000 in 2011, $5,600 last year.
Last year the class of 1979 donated more than $50 to sponsor a
hole. My kids, all Bomber alumni, have decided to challenge each
of their classes to see which class can raise the most money for
the tournament. They have planned a challenge event at the "M"
lounge, (old Holiday Inn, 1515 GWWay), May 25 6pm, for anyone to
attend.
I just thought I would let everyone know about this and see if
my class is interested in the challenge. Any class is welcome to
participate. Any amount is welcome. You can contact me through
my email address if you have interest or any questions.

meets Davey's criteria of being a Bomber Babe. She does have a

Re: No t-shirts... I can't believe it
So here I am working on my fake ID so I can get into the "taco
bar" with the class of '63... so first I gotta put a "stache"
on my grageashun picture to make me look older... I think it'll
work pretty well... got me one a them typewriter re-rasers in a
circle with the broom end on it to re-rase the 5 in my year to
make it a 3. Now I know a bunch of the kids in '63 are about 2
years older than I am, so I figure I need to change my birthdate
to' 44 steada '46... all that accomplished I should be OK and
since I'm sending in my 25 smackers I should be covered as long
as nobody looks too closely at where the re-rasher went through
the paper... that may be a dead give away... but I could start
a conversation with the person at the door... something like...
"Hey isn't that a red tailed crane over there in the river?"
Or... "Wow! Who is that swimming topless in the pool?" (that
only works if it's a guy tho)... I decided it was bad form to
try and sneak into the gormet dinner... anyway they're just
having Jive Chicken, crusty salmon and prime rib with cracked
peppers on it so I might just kinda move it around on the plate
anyway... that's a heck of a lotta food for the price and I'd
give myself away if I took a doggie bag... I am VERY concerned
tho that there ain't no comemarashun t-shirt... I mean, man
it's 50 years... when my buddy was going to his 50th (and I was
going to my 25th) I thought he must be older than dirt... not
suggesting that the class of '63 is as old as he was... they
couldn't be... they're all so dang young... yeah I know... not
as young as I am... and I'd never call them old, but just the
other day I got in trubel for calling two of their girls "big"
girls... I didn't say "large" girls I just meant bigger 'n me...
(hmmm I guess that could be taken wrong)... well I know this
Bomber-babe unnerstans me cuz she one a my favorite Bomber-babes

Re: Susan and Arabella
A couple of days ago I asked my Bomber friends on Sandstorm if
anyone remembered the title of a book about a family traveling
west in a covered wagon on the Oregon Trail. My third grade
teacher read us a chapter each day when we returned from lunch.
Anyway, I was talking with my sister Mary Jane ('63) today and
she remembered the name of the book because she loved it too.
The title is "Susan and Arabella" by Rhoda Morris (1942). I
checked to see if the book is on Amazon and it is. One problem,
the book is a collector's item and cost $349!
I just checked the libraries in the area. They have it at the
Everett library but don't allow it to be checked out. So, I'll
be spending some time in Everett. I was REALLY surprised my
sister, Mary Jane ('63), remembered. Incidentally, she said one
afternoon the teacher was about to read a chapter from the book
but the kids were unruly (sp?). She told them to behave or she
wouldn't read. Mary Jane began telling the children to be quiet
and the teacher hit her with a ruler. She thought Mary Jane was
disrupting the class. My "sweet" little sister called her a
Witch and word got back to the teacher. That teacher always
liked me best! :)

Re: Memories...
Watched a show on the King last night. I always forget what an
impact that man on my life. I think I was a huge Buddy Holly,
Johnny Burnette Trio, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran etc. fan and
just lose track of how much Elvis meant to me growing up. I
remember coming home from an Elvis movie (pick one... any one)
and wrestling with Jerry LARSEN ('65) and Terry TOMPSON ('65)
trying to decide who looked more like Elvis. None of us looked
at all like him but we tried... we had our duck tails and our
sneer... the collar half up on our shirts... kinda like Katie
SHEERAN Johnson ('61) wears hers (swooooon), only we wuz guy-
guys with our little skinny belts and all (I'll treat you with a
picture if I remember)...
http://AlumniSandstorm.com/htm2013/Xtra/Riv/130516-DJR-Elvis.jpg
Little did I know that years later I would be sitting right
at the stage on opening night twice a year for about 5 years...
watching him hand out his little hound dogs and scarves to the
chicks sitting next to me... it was magic, pure magic... when I
watch shows like that I recall what a marvelous performer he was
and how personable he seemed. When I just listen to the same old
records on the radio I forget the magic... the absolute magic he
wove over our generation. I've never seen anything like it and
don't expect to ever see anything like it again. Many of his
songs bring tears to my eyes and chills up my spine (but not my
leg... I leave the leg chilling stuff to Leo WEBB ('63)) I think
the closest I ever came to the intimacy he exuded was the Who
in a small venue at the Hard Rock, but nobody has ever had the
magic for me. On the way in this morning I was listening to some
of the groups and solos outa the University of Wisconsin...
I used to date the widow of one of those musicians... it was
pretty wild seeing all of that stuff collected in one room...
made my office look small time... but alas... she was the
daughter of a Mafia Don and I decided continuing to see her
could be bad for my health... kinda like what happened to Tommy
Sands... I don't need that kinda trouble! Then Dean HOFF ('62)
sent me about the coolest sign from a Wisconsin Boarder and just
made my day! Ah, but it's birthday time and I'm sorry to say
I never took this Bomber-babe to the prom or to an Elvis
concert... But she's still one a my favorite Bomber-babes...

Re: Mom always liked him best
Mike Brady's ('61) story reminded me of 5th grade at Spalding.
My class was made up of probably the worst "hoods" ever to hit
that school. When I look at the class picture it almost sends
shivers up my spine. We were one unruly bunch. That was the
year I got two rival gangs, of which I was the "Pres" to have a
fight on the playground while I was on School Boy Patrol... ah
heck, it seem like a good idea at the time. The West Richland
bunch, "the JDs" were much better equipped than the kids from
Richland. Naturally Georgie AASAL ('65-RIP) suffered a broken
nose, which kinda alerted the principal, that something was
amiss... I swore my innocence, but he wasn't hearin' it... he
just kept saying "I know it was you"... I've always figured
that's why we moved to Jason Lee... anyway, we had a teacher
who will remain un-named here... she carried a rubber hose...
she was also deaf, which often lead to the wrong kid getting
clobbered for the wrong offense... Craig DAVIS ('65) and I went
to my Mom (why I'll never know) to report it... she said that
knowing that bunch anything we got we deserved, perhaps not at
that moment, but for something else... Well, we decided to play
the "dad said ok if you say ok" with Craig's mom and told
her my mom was going to the principal to report our inhumane
treatment... Mrs. Davis took the bait and the lady lost her
rubber hose privileges... since we lived right across the street
to the entrance to the 5th grade wing, the lady came over and
cried on my Mom's shoulder... after my dad got home I probably
cried on Craig's shoulder... who knows... I then moved to Jason
Lee, where my mom adopted Terry DAVIS ('65) as her new son and
disowned me (nah, not really... I disowned my folks a few years
later... but that's another story... one I'm not real proud
of)... guess I should kind of apologize to the Bomber-babe
havin' the b-day today... I didn't mean to lump her in with my
early dayz of delinquency... but hey... keeps me entertained if
nothing else... tell that kid in the class of '52 he can wake up
now and wish HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Betsy FOX ('63) on her special

Re: Mass B-day wish
I always enjoy this b-day, day... not that I don't enjoy all b-
days... I do... where else in the world could a kid from a small
town like ours have the opportunity to wish so many people an
HB all during the year? While I'm writing this, I'm trying to
supply "one word" to Carl "Beaver" BEYER's ('65) wife describing
Steve SIMPSON ('65-RIP) for the bench and plaque we'll be
dedicating at the "Party of the Year" during CDNs [Cool Desert
Nights]... don't forget, Friday nite at Cecilia's (south of the
corner of Haines and GWWay... ya can't miss us on the grass) and
Saturday evening at Ruth Simpson's... I can't come up with one
word... Several years ago, Terry DAVIS ('65) and I were driving
from L.A. to Riverside during "El Nino"... we stopped for
something to eat (with Davis that is kind of an every 15 minute
stop) and were talking about Steve... we were trying to describe
him then too... I said he reminded me of the Big box of crayons
and that he was prolly the only one of us left who could still
see all those colors, while the remainder of us viewed life
through a much more muted palate... I'm also trying to give her
my "updated" list of emails... no matter how often I try and
update it, it is always way off... I'm looking like crazy to
find C MOORE's ('65) "new" address and can't find it or they all
look alike... she scolded me when I didn't update it and I am
sure I did but where I have no clue... arrrrrrrrrgh... well,
anyway, each of the B-day kids was a favorite of Steve's and a
favorite of mine... one saved my bacon so many times in HS I
can't begin to count... thank goodness he and Davis were as good
with their punches as I was with my mouth... I had a big one
and much of what I said could be and normally was construed as
provocation... If I gave the impression that he eats leftovers
the other day, I hope I didn't offend... I'll try and think of
nicer things to say from now on... Another one of these kids
made me a leather belt in craft class or something... I still
have it... he was also spozed ta be my "best man" on a trip with
my sweetie Senior year to Ideeho... nobody told us Ideeho closed
down on the 4th of July... duh... another, I remember as being
Kenny JOHNSON's ('65-RIP) bestest pal... they always seemed to
be together and it's always great to see BFF (I just learned
what that meant a short while ago) together... the Bomber-babe

Re: (RIP) Frederick "Fred" Zimmerly Burnham
Just a few weeks ago I had a Sandstorm entry celebrating Fred
Burnham?s retirement at the age of 57 from Albertson's in
Richland.
http://www.tri-cityherald.com/2013/03/07/2302284/the-boss-retires-from-albertsons.html
Sadly, today Maren forwarded me the news that Fred had died.
http://www.tri-cityherald.com/2013/05/17/2398059/frederick-fred-z-burnham.html
Fred far outlived the life expectancy of a 1950's Down's
Syndrome baby and certainly achieved much more than was expected
of him. Fred was in the "NAB" category since Special Ed in those
days didn't include the possibility of High School graduation
but, if Fred didn't have the option of being a Bomber, he was
certainly All-Richland... Richland and the Richland Albertson's
are a sadder place today.
RIP, Freddy!

Re: Slight Hiccup
Hi Everyone,
I had my 3rd chemo treatment today and all went well or so I
thought. The nurse disconnected the drugs and said if I needed
to use the bathroom to go ahead while she got the Heparin to
flush the line. When I came back she did my vitals like they
always do and I noticed my upper arm felt hot while the cuff was
inflating. She noticed after taking the cuff off my arm from the
elbow down was red and hot to the touch and that was through her
gloves. She asked me if I was short of breath and I said "No."
but wasn't really sure at that point. She got the charge nurse
to look at it and they decided to do some measurements of my
arms to comparison and contacted the oncologist I saw today as
my regular one is out of town. He came and looked at it and when
my arm was down it got redder but when it was raised up the
redness went away, he was truly baffled as to what was going on
and said I may need an ultrasound study the vascular area of my
right arm to rule out a clot. He told the nurse to elevate it
for 30 minutes and then he'd recheck it. Well the 30 minutes
came and went and it was still somewhat there but not as
pronounced. The charge nurse put a call through to him and when
he didn't come over she went to the other side and talked with
him. He finally came and looked at it and by then it wasn't
noticeable. I told him I have to come in tomorrow for that
shot so we'll look at it again. The nurse told me what to look
for tonight and tomorrow and if it returns I need to call the
emergency line and tell them what went on today. She'll be
working again tomorrow and will check it when I go in. She
wonders if somehow something temporarily blocked off the flow
and it didn't last for whatever reason. Well, only 1 more
treatment and I can look into that move. I'll keep you all
posted.

I read the Alumni Sandstorm every day, but I seldom have
anything of interest to write. So I thought I'd write anyway.
I've had several reminders of my mortality lately. I now have
hearing aids; although my hearing is deficient in only certain
frequencies, it makes it difficult to understand people. Then
my optometrist informed me I have the beginnings of cataracts
in both eyes, although not bad enough (yet) to require surgery.
Then my doctor gave me an EKG and sent me to a cardiologist
because it indicated I may have had a mild heart attack some
time. I had an echo cardiogram and two treadmill stress tests ?
the second with radioactive dye to determine if some areas
of the heart weren't getting enough blood circulation. The
technician asked if I had any concerns about the radioactive
dye. I said "No, I grew up in Richland, Washington, and we
always considered it an asset to glow in the dark." Fortunately,
everything came out normal. My doctor wants to see me again in
three months, so I guess he thinks I'll last at least that long.
The weather has warmed up to the 90s and 100s, and we can now
use our swimming pool. I swim (well, more like paddle) about 45
minutes every day, so at least I'm getting some exercise. We
had a solar heater installed and it has helped warm the pool up
earlier that it would have. 85° is very comfortable. Much more
so than the cold Columbia River was. I've also gotten to use my
"RHS Bomb" floater in it.
http://alumnisandstorm.com/htm2013/Xtra/Spa/130213-Matt.htm
We also had a solar electric system installed, but it hasn't
been turned on yet waiting for inspections by the city and the
electric company. Those have finally been done and it will be
"commissioned" on Wednesday. We have a 20-year lease at a fixed
rate which is supposed to be less than the electric company
would normally charge.
My main activity is my weekly Toastmaster meeting. I finally
earned the highest award in Toastmasters, Distinguished
Toastmaster. I'm giving a humorous speech tomorrow night titled
"That Was My First Mistake." It's about my first date with Patty
BEZZIO ('63-RIP) (and the first date ever for her).
Does anyone who went to Carmichael remember a black girl, first
name Sandy (if my memory is correct)? She went to Carmichael my
eighth grade, 1957-'58. I have my ninth-grade annual, but she's
not in it. I mentioned her in one of my speeches, but don't know
her last name.

Re: Now What
I went to the imaging center this afternoon to drop off
something for the breast patient navigator. She asked me how my
arm was doing [See 5/21/13 entry] as I had emailed her about it.
I told her it seems to be better. I had the nurses look at it
yesterday when I went in for my injection post chemo. They
thought it looked better but felt it could still somewhat be
there. The charge nurse was in contact with the oncologist I saw
Monday by email and he was supposed to let her know what I was
supposed to do. He never got back with her so she told me to go
home and she'd call me after he let her know what I needed to
do, if anything. She never called me last night so I told the
navigator that this afternoon. She texted them and told them I
was on my way home and I needed to be called. I had just put
my dinner in the microwave when the phone rang. It wasn't the
clinic but the hospital saying they had an order for me to have
an ultrasound study of my arm. She asked me some questions as
the ordering person's name didn't sound familiar to me. I guess
it was one of the oncologist's nurses who I hadn't met on Monday
as the one who took me back is the medical assistant for my
regular oncologist. I'm scheduled for tomorrow afternoon and I
guess we'll see if anything is going on, sure hope not since
it's my right arm and of course I'm right handed. When it rains
it pours, huh? Prayers please as I know the power of Bomber

with, without adding heart problems to it! Dang! I'm going to

Hi Troops,
It looks like my saw bones' group is teaming up on me!!!! I had
the temporary Holter unit on for a day last week. They called
me yesterday and said I am going in next Tuesday to have the
Pacemaker put in. They seem to think that pulse rates in the
30s and low 40s with long gaps in between some of them are not
conducive to a longer lifetime!!!!!!
My heart man says the single wire unit is all I need for my

Dude, welcome to the Brothers of the Heart. I had a Pacemaker/
Defibrillator, also Boston Scientific, put in September 2011 and
it is working like a charm. My Afib was like yours, lows in the
30s and highs in the mid-40s and it should be around 60. It is
amazing how much better you will feel and ironically it helped
me get eight full hours of sleep each night. Not sure what that
has to do with the Brothers of the Bladder but no more 0 dark 30
runs to the loo for me. After about six months of having it in,
I went in for a routine check, they wave a wand over your PM
[Pacemaker] and it reads all kinds of stuff, like battery life,
rate of beats (or is that beets) per minute (bpm) and beat
regularity. Mine was still at 60 bpm but he suggested I might
like 65 so we upped it and that too made an immediate change in
my activity level.
As I said, mine has a defibrillator along with the PM
[Pacemaker] all in the same package but it requires three leads.
The idea here is, since I had a four-way bypass in 1970, is to
read the bpm and if they drop suddenly the defib kicks in with a
jolt and time to get to the ER [emergency room]. My doctor in
Bellingham, WA, who is a U of Washington Medical School grad
with my doctor in Rancho Mirage, CA, asked me if I would like to
see the procedure and if you are like me, I said "Yes". Did it
with my original angioplasty procedure and it was a hoot and
this was just as interesting getting all three leads into the
right position. I know how and why they work now, one positive
and two negative, the positive works both the PM [Pacemaker] and
the defib whilst the negative leads are for the PM [Pacemaker]
part and the other for the defib operation.
Now if this is TMI [too much information], just read it before
breakfast but I am thinking of you on Tuesday, buddy. We are all
in this together (to quote Red green).
-Bill BERLIN ('56) ~ Anacortes, WA just 15 miles where the I-5
bridge section fell into the Skagit River Thursday night.
It will not affect me too much but it is sure going to
screw up traffic in both directions. If any Bombers are
heading north to Bellingham or Vancouver and need a route
a little less traveled, just let me know. I have a key to
Farmer Boosma's river ditch bank road gate, just like we
used to do on the irrigation ditch banks in and around
Richland.

Cue the bugles, Cue the muffled drums, call the VFW and tell 'em
to empty the bar, 'cause we need an Honor Guard or have Maren
and WHITESIDE ('63) find me a Bourbon Street Funeral Brass Band.
It's with a heavy heart that we announce "Cousin Eddy has left

way of the Carrier Pigeon, actually he's gone to a new home,
and just in time as gas in Seattle is now about $4.00. We had
a great time taking some of you along with us when we "Ran Away
With The Circus" fifteen months and twenty five states ago.
We darkened the doors and lowered the property values of many
great Bomber hosts along the way. The largess of all the member
volunteers of FLAWB (Food And Lodging For Aimlessly Wandering
Bombers) was amazing and I wept openly when we emptied Eddy out
and fingered the towels and pillow cases we had purloined along
the way. The Happy Hours saluting the Green & Gold with old
friends kept us smiling and singing along with Fifties on Five
for miles and miles and miles. Just before he roared off into
the sunset (like Alan Ladd in "Shane"), I gave him a wet one
over the left headlight, thanked him for his dependability and
companionship, told him to always wear clean underwear and to
always say "please and thank you and to always tell them you

I have had mine for two years, Medtronic/ProtectaXT. also have

still have the "port" on the left side. I was a bit upset when
heart doctor said I had to have one... kept thinking I wasn't
"that" old, but when he said my heart just wasn't pumping enough
to keep me alive, I decided having that little device implanted
under my skin was small price to pay to be able to be here to

hasn't interfered with my doing anything that I have wanted to
do and it hasn't "gone off" either. They did let me hear the
noise it would make if it was ever "in use"... sounds like the

healing so if it was only 1 day I guess I'm deserving of that
now and then... just don't want to make it a habit though.
Thanks for the continuing Bomber prayers, they definitely have
lifted me up.

Re: MEMORIAL DAY
The last Monday in May we honor those who died -
serving their homeland with dedication and pride.
They gave their lives for this country so great -
It's in remembrance of them that we now celebrate.
As we enjoy the beginning of our summer fun season, may we
take time to contemplate the meaning of "Memorial Day".

The outpouring of support we've received over Cousin Eddy [the RV]
leaving the building has been overwhelming. The makeshift shrine
outside of the storage lot which has been Cousin Eddy's abode
since we got him home has become somewhat of a major tourist
attraction. The menagerie of stuffed animals alone is nearly
horse high and when combined with the vast array of mylar
balloons, candles, flowers and poems is absolutely breathtaking.
There is also a sizable pile of beer cans which is a nice touch
that Eddy would have liked as would he have appreciated the two
espresso stands, Hawaiian Ice trailer and taco truck. There were
also several of the requisite and for Kirkland [WA] the ubiquitous
chiropractor booths.
I listed Cousin Eddy for sale on Craigslist. I got a fair number
of calls, 95% of which wanted to know my lowest price. I told
them that instead of me giving them my low ball, to come take a
look and give me their highest price. I didn't get my price, but
as someone told me, "at least you didn't lose as much as if you
had bought it new". I guess that makes me a genius. The best
offer I received was someone who offered to trade me four
cemetery plots at Floral Hills Cemetery in Lynnwood. I gave that
one a hearty Pasadena, as I didn't want to spend eternity that
close to I-405.
Not to fret, we're moving on.

Re: there's always a bigger kid around
It was with great regret that I learned of the probable sale of
Cuzin Eddie tho I must say that I thought Jimbeaux ('63) had
mentioned a while back that he was in the market for a newer
model... perhaps that's not proper subject matter for the SS
as I am pretty sure Cuzin Eddie can read... funny cuz I had
mentioned to Frank WHITESIDE ('63) the other day that I thought
Jimbeaux and the ever young and beautiful Miss Nancy ('65) were
planning on honoring him with one of the first visits in the new
Cousin Edward... oh well, nobody ever tells me anything... I
did hear that Frank OSGARD ('63) was in the market for a motor
home... guess he hasn't put all the cash together for a good
offer... I'll wait to hear... last I heard, he was looking for
that girl from the class of '65 who remembers dating him...
but now onward and upward, as they say... today we are either
celebrating the birth of fraternal twins, an international spy
or a member of witness protection... I've never figured it out
and I'm far too shy and reserved to ever ask a big kid anything
so personal as that... against his better instincts, he and I
have come to enjoy our daily banters back and forth and he one
ups me every time... considering he was a Chief (I'm forgetting
the proper adjective in front of Chief... not on purpose... just
cuz I forgot) in the Squids and senior to me in rank (I was a
mere Staff Sergeant in the Corps) I consider it an honor that
he hangs out with me at all... but he pointed out something the
other day, that made me stop and think... tho he is senior to
me... he is still boot to the kids who were juniors and seniors
when he was a lowly Soph. Yup... you may Have Gun and you may
Travel, but there's always a faster gun out there somewhere...

Here's a newspaper article from Memorial Day, 1969. It shows my

the wreath. Terry was the Commanding Office of the portion of

share my first and latest with Craigslist. I had a 2003 Honda

wanted to trade some baseball cards and or some silver dollars.
The next guy wanted to trade a cannon, a rifle, and two pistols.
Since I already have a cannon, rifle, and 2 pistols that didn't
work. The third guy had cash and it was a done deal.

>>From: Helen CROSS Kirk ('62)
I have delayed for far too long to finish telling about my
wonderful vacation to visit my grandson in Nevada that ended
May 2 when I returned to the business of being a minister's
wife. (If my grandson lived somewhere around here, we would love
it,but alas he doesn't, so we are planning our next rendezvous.
But April was so much fun with my grandson, Salivin, age 9. He
had me trying out a fitness trail near where they live, or at
least walking far more than I force myself to do here, so I was
getting more healthy... I'm swimming again here at the Y trying
again... but when I was with Salivin and my son and his wife,
we had a great time, helping my daughter-in-law but in flowers
(which I'm sure are doing better as the weather gets warmer, as
our mine here); we had at least one snowfall in Gardnerville
when I was there.
I also got down to Sacramento to have lunch at the Firehouse
with Sandy FINNEY Harvego ('60) and her older sister Pat ('56).
Alas I can't get my phone to send a photo, which is why I've
waited so long. We really enjoyed being at the lovely courtyard
of the Firehouse and laughed so much over all our Bomber
memories...
And I got to spend some time on the Sacramento Delta on a lovely
warm day. If I were a wedding planner, I don't know which I
would choose, the Fireshouse courtyard, the delta, or my old
play ground the Rose Garden in McKinley Park where I used to
live across the street, eons ago....
So we are starting to feel the humidity of the midwest after a
very coo - delightful really - May. But we do find things and
places, and most of all people we really enjoy spending time
with "back home in Indiana!!"
I am going to a class next week which I hope will help me to get
those photos sent to the Sandstorm. OH, and my very late, but
sincere congratulations to Gene HORNE & Carol BISHOP ('57) on
their 57th wedding anniversary [on 5/25], from one of Susie's
friends who used to be in your mother's group of Campfire Girls?
When I send in my photos I will include a photo of Elsie Walker
and me at her fun 100th birthday at the end of April. That was
such a fun weekend because Carole JOHNSTON Berg ('62) and her
husband (NAB) picked me up late that Friday night, and Carole
and I hardly stopped talking enough to sleep and let her play
the organ at her Renton Methodist Church where she has been the
organist for over 40 years. And I ended that weekend flying
back to Reno and spending some time with my cousin, Carol CROSS
Llewellyn ('64) who happened to be there at the same time.
So it was really a fun filled month!!
With my love and best wishes, especially to all the veterans and
those who serve in the Armed Services. My husband and I probably
attended the most moving Memorial concert we have ever attended
Memorial weekend in Columbus, IN.
-Helen CROSS Kirk ('62)
P.S.: This summer will be back in Washington state for my
husband's 50 year high school reunion up in Brewster in
