Re: '54 in '14 - 60 Year Reunion
Five more '54 classmates have signed up for Club 40 dinner either
Friday and/or Saturday nights, September 5th and 6th!! We still
are missing so many!!
Yesterday (7-30) I sent out 15 more reminder e-mails to those who
have not paid their 20$ to me (for '54 stuff) or who have not
sent money (for Club40 stuff) to Ann Thompson, aka Anna May WANN
('49), but may have done one or the other.
Feel free to contact me if there are any questions. Our committee
will be calling those of you who try to ignore us!!
Come have a fun time at our reunion and maybe get lucky to win

I dunno what sort of "confession" we are going to hear today from
the Jr. Gyrene, but it will be interesting. The reason I say this
is that there is one important event that occurred on this date.
An event which allowed all Bombers who just happen to be on line
to sort of speak to each other. Granted, it does use up a lot of
electrons; though probably not as many as one would think. I speak
of course, on the birth of this paper, lo those many years ago.
There was one other event that also happened on this date a few
years before the Alumni Sandstorm came into being. Yes, I'm
speaking of the birth of another Bomber Babe. She is one of the
younger ones of my recent acquaintance, and she is the sort who is
most welcome at the big kids table. A tip of the ol' propeller
beanie to Ann ENGEL Schafer ('63) on this most important day in
her young life. Let's all give a hearty "Happy Birthday!" cheer
to her.
And on another note, Silverton's Homer Davenport Community
Festival starts today. I only mention this as No. 3 son is the
head of the group that puts it on. If you are in the neighborhood,
drop in and have a good time.

Well, well, well, two of my very favorite Bomber-babes, a good
buddy and our very own Sandstorm iz havin' b-days today... of
course the title sweet 16 could easily be applied to the babes
but it was meant for the Sandstorm... We has been writin' in to
each other for 16 years, today... it's fitting that my new motto
is: "careful whatcha sez and how ya sez it"... I learned that
there may be times at which my little posts are not as clearly
and cleverly wrote as I'd like them to be... lemme rephrase...
it is entirely possible, that my little posts are only as clear
and cleverly wrote as I'd like them to be once inna blue moon...
now I shooda seen this when I wrote what I thunk was a compliment
to a guy who has become a good buddy and he answered tellin' me
to ... uuuuuh... well... take a flyin' leap... his b-day is
this month and I'm coitenly happy we got that settled some while
ago... but I has since learned that I somehow managed to give
the pression I wuz a window peeker in my yute... not so... window
peeking in one a them things I considered to be high on risk and
very low on reward, if there was any reward, I didn't quite catch
it... now we all know that I was no angel... if I was I'd be one
a those guys who celebrate marriage to their one and only of many
years... If I wuz I'da never spent any time in the Shelby County
Jail and lemme tell ya... the Shelby County jail made the brig
look very good! If I wuz, my censors could go to sleep at night
knowing I would never reveal their most intimate secrets... As my
Bakersfield Bomber-babe, Linda REINING ('64) pointed out a while
back... I may wear "T-shits" but at least they are clean...
beyond that, ain't no garantees... so what do you do when two of
your most favorite babes have b-days on the same day? Well, one
thing fer sher, ya can't tell em both you love them only in the
same post... oh sure sure... they are gaa gaa over me too...
well, they were at least till one lost her phone while riding in
my truck and I said the other looked like a Mario Brother inna
stache (long stories and I could never splane them properly in
such a short space)... I don't mean she has a stache I mean... oh
like I said... it's like diggin' a hole in quicksand sometimes
around here in fact, I still get giddy the minute either of these
babes is near... kinda like the kat in Smokey Joe's Cafe... a
chill runs down my spine, my knees shake and my heart goes

Re: '69 in '14 ~ 45 Year Reunion ~ 3rd week in August
Our 45 Year reunion ~ August 15th, 16th and 17th, 2014.
This is a no cost affair (if you don't drink or eat :O) with two
social nights at the Richland Red Lion (Hanford House) Ripples
lounge starting at 6pm on Friday and Saturday night and a pot
luck picnic at Columbia Point Park (behind Anthony's) on Sunday
starting at noon.
Memory books are available for $11 each. All classmates are
invited as well as friends and family of the Col-Hi Class of
1969.

Re: Upcoming benefit shows for U.S. veterans with
Michael PETERSON ('77) and Sean LEWIS ('77)
Just a heads-up here, Bombers and friends, about next weekend's
(August 8 & 9) two shows to benefit Tri-City area veterans.
First, I'll be playing at The Roxy Bar in Kennewick on Friday as
a "pre-event" for Saturday's "main event" (see below) in
Richland. Friday's show starts at 8:30 and is a public event, but
everyone involved with the Saturday show, including Mike, will be
on hand -- just me performing though! Again, proceeds from this
show and Saturday's concert in Richland go to benefit local
veterans groups.
Tickets for Friday's show are $7 in advance and $10 at the door,
and you can get advance tickets through TicketFly.com -- enter
"Sean Lewis" in the search field and you'll be directed to the
event page. Then, Saturday, join us at John Dam Plaza in Richland
for a barbecue, kids' events, food vendors, the RHS cheer team,
appearances by Miss Tri-Cities and County Fair royalty, a beer
garden and lots more. I'm honored to be opening the show around
8:00, with the (as many of you know) immensely talented Bomber
alum Michael PETERSON ('77) wrapping-up the evening with a solo
acoustic show.

Bomber friend, Jerry IRWIN ('58), is up to these days.
Jerry got his iPad and is trying to learn to use it now... he can
only use his thumb as of now. He still is working on trying to
stand and working on his voice and letters, too.
His girls were there to see him this last week end. Bonnie hasn't
been to see him because of a cold but did make it on Wednesday
this week.
Keep the prayers going for Jerry and his family.
Bonnie said that someone is coming to get him this Sunday to take
him to a church service they have there, That should be wonderful
for him... nice to get him out of his room and with other people,
too.

Soooooo, the Forever Young and Always Lovely Miss Nancy ('65) and
I are 2/3 of our way thru "Ballin' the Jack with Fritz". This was
going to be our "Happy Place Tour"... we've been over the Donner
Pass, Deadwood and are looking forward to the Little Big Horn.
The low point was having Fritz, while having the cruise control
set on 85 across the Bonneville Salt Flats, being passed by a
Prius. That didn't set well and I curbed my urge to pull an
"Irwin" and looked for the XM channel his Barristerness uses to
soothe his soul all the way to Salt Lake City.
We've been a week on Lake Minnetonka spoiling the grand kids and
will turn left on Sunday.

So I think it's kinda obvious that my posts iz pretty much
comprised of random thoughts as they come out my fingers on to
the keys... they ain't scripted and are pretty much what they
calls stream of conshusness... er sumthin' like that... now I'm
not good at doin' this... I tried onced afore when Earl BENNETT
('63) thought it would be nice to get some advanced notice when
I'm changin' subjects... Poor Maren ('63 & '64) even tried makin'
paragraphs for me to little or no avail... but since the subject
has been raised, I will try and give advance warning when I feel
a confeshun coming on... now I said I'd try... no promises that
way you can skip my post before hand and avoid my candidness...
now unlike that saying that went around a few years back... I

Two days solid in the garage in the heat has me plumb wore out...
both days I finished about 5, but I was up late last night and up
early for donut delinquent breakfast... almost took a nap when I
got home from breakfast, but figured getting the job I started
yesterday finished would only take a short while... that is as
big a lie as the check's in the mail... no job only takes a short
while... especially the ones that SHOULD only take a short
while... dunno what got in to me last night... I was ready for
big sleep around 8, but figured the cats would put up a fuss if I
brought them in early so watched some this and that on TV... at
one point I heard Kid Rock singing "I was born free" on some ad
so kept thinking about it after the computers were shut down...
cats came in and went to bed and I kept thinking about that
song... finally got up, turned a computer on and listened to the
song... then hadda put it on face book and then I got the bug...
I started pullin' up songs and more songs till I could hardly
keep my eyes open... so I think it's best to send out these
wishes before I go take another shower, cuz after that... who
knows........ HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, to the BEHYMERs ('64) on your

Fellow classmates need to get your registration in for our
Saturday dinner September 6th at the Red Lion Hotel in Richland.
I have tried to contact everyone I had e-mails for and snail mail
addresses, but when some of the e-mails bounced I tried to clear
those up and sent them snail mail Notices.
Now I have a few snail mail addresses that have bounced too. Need

I want to speak to those who have been victims of abuse
somewhere/sometime in their life whether as a child, teenager,
college student or an adult. This is about a novel/book written
by a woman that I am proud to call her my friend. The book is
called: "If You Could See What I See" by Cathy Lamb. Violence
against children and women especially is a precursor to the
violence in our culture where love, compassion and guidance are
not in the forefront of growing up and developing into the kind
of person who is loving, compassionate, caring and independent
with their self esteem intact. I recommend this book and this
author with whom I have the highest regard. I would hope you
would look at it and think what you are committed to. Thank you
for allowing me to express my thoughts and feelings on this
matter.

Re: Club40 Class Representatives and Secretary position:
Richland High School Club 40 is a volunteer organization and
Class representatives are an integral part of the Club. Each
class may have two representatives, elected by their classmates,
who act as a communication link with the Club. More than that
however, each Class Representative becomes a member of the Board
of Directors. The Board meets three times each year: in September
on the Annual Meeting weekend, and generally in late October and
late April. Board members help conduct the Club business and
provide input into the Club?s direction. Presently Class
Representatives are needed for the following Class years: 1947
(one Representative), 1950 (one), 1958 (one), 1961 (one), 1964
(one), 1965 (one), 1966 (one), and two each for the years 1967,
1970, 1971, 1972, 1973 and the newest class to join, 1974. Help
keep the Richland High School "spirit" alive and give strong
consideration to being a Class Representative.
Also we are looking for a second candidate for the Office of
Secretary to be placed on this year?s ballot. Those elected this
fall would serve from October, 2014 through September,2015. Even
offering to assist the present Secretary would be very helpful.

Re: Tampien Travels Tour de West 2014
We have returned from our 2 and 1/2 month sabbatical and have
finally put the finishing touches on our blog. It was a struggle
to keep up with it, 'cause we were having too much fun. We want
to thank Jim Walsh and a few others along the way including young
hotel front desk staff who helped me when Sally got frustrated
and went shopping, leaving me to try to get the pictures onto
this blog. Sally has an I-phone and we are using an HP laptop.
They wouldn't talk to each other. Not until we got home did we
figure out how to easily use Dropbox to link the photos to the
blog. Thanks everyone for being patient with us..Now just sit
back and relax and enjoy our trip with us.

"Parked on a corner in a beat up car; dividing up a nickel candy
bar; talkin all about how charmed they are; three cool cats...
"... oh man how often to ya get a chance to use that one inna b-
day post!!!!!!!!!!!!! But way fitting for the three b-day Bombers
we gots today... The Coasters musta had these guys in mind when
they recorded that song... I used to really enjoy seeing their
bus parked in Richland when I'd be there and they were still
doing those concerts at the fingernail... they had Vegas plates
on the car and it just kinda made me feel good... then they
stopped having those big concerts and Cornell got hissself
stabbed over on the West side at some bar... the West side in
Vegas is where "the black Community" was in Vegas in the old

exists... the Moulin Rouge burned down, but otherwise the west
side hasn't changed much 'cept it ain't really the west side any
more... it's just slightly west of downtown and town stretches
west alla way to the mountains now... so anyway we really have
three stars growing a tad older today... two of them will be 68
and get to be way older n me for a whole two months... the other
is turning 70 just in time for his class Seven-O celebration inna

Excerpt from Legacy.com obit:
"Cecil F. "Bill" Laughery was born March 27, 1922, in
Dayton, WA, and passed away July 28, 2014. Bill moved
his family to the Tri-Cities in 1959. He was a Teamster
Warehouseman and worked for various companies at the
Hanford Site and Boise Cascade until his retirement in
1987. His favorite activity, outside of his work was
coaching Little League, Pony and Colt Leagues baseball
when his sons were young.
Among his survivors are his wife, Elvera; sons, William
A. Laughery (Trudy) and Lyle Laughery (?66) (Pam);
numerous great-grandchildren; sister, Nellie O?Connor;
and brother, Richard Laughery (Marilyn). Bill was
preceded in death by his first wife, Annabel; his
parents, Cecil R. and Dail Laughery; his brother, Jack
Laughery; and great-grandson, Kyler Jamison Hubbard.
Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Saturday,
August 16, at the Redeemer Lutheran Church, 601 S. 3rd
Street in Dayton, WA."

Saturday Night Fever is coming to our reunion, minus John
Travolta. We have hired a D.J. to play after the program. It's
Sock Hops all over again. Those of us who are "Bionic Bombers"
will have to hold on to our new body parts.
My good friend and neighbor just returned from her 50 year
reunion in Minnesota and she shared some comments that she heard
from her classmates.
1. I'm sort of a last minute person. I'll decide that morning if
I'm going or not. Her reply was: "Well you'd better eat before
you come because we only ordered so much food." He did attend by
the way. :)
2. I don't want to pay to eat I just want to visit my friends.
Her reply: "Bills have to be paid whether you eat or not."
3. "You gals all look like my grandmother!" I will not print her
reply!! :)

All I can say is December musta been the Amour month in Richland,
cuz we gots b-days stack up on one another... now I never had one
so I can't speak from personal sperience but I knowed a few and
I'm sayin' Sisters are a real good thing... this one stands out
in my memory as clear as a bell and I spent alotta time at her
house with her brother... He was one of those kids you just hadda
like and she has always been the same... glowing personalities,
both... A good buddy and I thought so much of him we died our
hair to be more like him... the dye job was a miserable failure
and we burned the crap outa our heads... but the homage had been
paid... over the years he has drifted away and on her struction
we have allowed him to do so... tho it does pain us to do so... I
believe we owe that to him if that is his wish... she remains in
close touch with everyone so it's difficult to understand, but
then maybe we don't need to understand so much as to accept what
is... but I'm sure glad to have her in my circle of friends and
trust we will remain friends for a very, very long time... HAPPY

This past weekend was very special for me. A Cole family reunion
was held, hosted by brother John ('66) and his child bride wife
Vicki MOSLEY ('66). John is the representative, along with the
aid of Mickey HEMPHILL ('66) for the Quilt of Valor program.
They presented brother-in-law Bill BAILEY ('64) with a quilt, an
acknowledgement of his service, and a welcome home. Not many dry
eyes in the crowd. Many extended "Family" members attended the
reunion, Gary WEBB ('64) and wife Char, Mickey's wife Linda with
her camera, Danny GREGORY ('66) and granddaughter Josie, Mary
BAILEY Shaw ('64) with grandson Logan and Sybil Mosley, Vicki's
lovely mother. These reunions are so precious to all, especially
the older generation. I do have a question though: Why do all the
cell phone pictures make us look even shorter and wider? Hmmm A
wonderful time was had by all, and Johnny and Vicki's hard work
was greatly appreciated. I did get a "Look" from Vicki when I
told her we had such a good time that we would be back same time,
same place next year. HA!
Usually I don't do paragraphs either David RIVERS ('65), but I
wanted to thank you and Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) for
acknowledging Jackie and Judie's ('63) birthday. I was busy with
husband, Gary, who had shoulder surgery.

Re: Back in Time
Conformation that I am a member in good standing of Pappy's OTDC
(Older Than Dirt Club).
Last night I noticed that an episode of "The Twilight Zone"
called "Walking Distance" was going to be on and the description
sounded like one I remembered watching when it was new in 1959,
although I only remembered just a little bit of it; so I watched
it. The story was about a man who left his car to be worked on
just outside of the town he grew up in and had not been back in
something like 20 years. He walked into town to the soda shop he
used to frequent as a kid and found that it hadn't changed a bit
and the triple scoop ice cream soda was still ten cents. Of
course he has walked back in time and Ron Howard makes a brief
appearance as the first little kid he talks to. He sees himself,
as a kid, and his parents, who, of course, until near the end
think he is some kind of a nut. On his way out of town he stops
at the soda shop and you see a different soda jerk and a number
of teenagers dancing. It wasn't until he ordered another triple
scoop ice cream soda and the soda jerk said it would cost him
extra, thirty five cents, that I realized he had returned to the
present. I had thought he was still in the past.
You see, the scene I saw in the soda shop was what it looked
like when I was a teenager. The main character, Gig Young, had
traveled back in time from 1959 (based on the year the program
first aired and the 1959 Ford seen at the beginning) to 1934
(based on the "brand new" 1934 Ford roadster when he was back in
time) 25 years. By watching the program I had traveled back in
time 55 years, so it still looked like the past to me. I don't
know, I guess I was expecting when he returned to his present
there would not be teenage boys and girls dancing with each
other, they would all be sitting at tables across from each
other looking at their iPhones.

So I'm pulling in to the COSTCO parking lot minding my own

so 'n' so and so 'n' so... nope didn't know 'em... then she says
"My Dad is a Bomber, too... " Now I'm easily confused... but I'm

added)... now I've known Dean since before we wuz in school but
ain't seen him since '65... no she said, she's pretty sure he's
never been to one of the '65er reunions... tho he used to go with
her Mom to hers... told her our 50th was next year... turns out
he's corporate counsel for Harrah's and Caesars... musta come
after I used to do Caesar's work... so I found him on Facebook
and saw that a bunch of ya is friends of his... see if he
responds... (by the way, she saw the Bomber car plaque I had made
a few years back)...
Sooooooooooo today we gotta kid who grew up with a whole gaggle
of sisters... man he had sisters everywhere... and what great
sisters they are... (tho one is RIP, I'm still saying "are")...
ya know I always wonder what it must be like... I mean try
something and see what I mean... go to the mall, a dance (ok
lots of us are finished with sock hops and such but use yer
maginashun) or whatever with a girl and see how many times girls
flirt with you... it's like you just invented panty-hose er
sumthin'... now do the same thing by yerself... all of a sudden
it's like you have an "I got a loathsome disease" stamped on your
forehead... make the mistake of smiling or saying Hi and you
become Jack the Ripper... well, from living across from the
PARKER girls I can tell you girls (sisters) attract more girls!
Ok it's my theory and I'm stickin' to it... HAPPY BIRTHDAY,

always with me in spirit... I am a firm believer that we are

As many of you know my little brother Wig, aka Kent DAVIS ('82)
is battling an aggressive form of cancer known as myeloma.
Donations from friends and family to the "Wigstrong Foundation"
have been nothing short of amazing, but that doesn't surprise me.
Wig has touched many people with his sense of humor and carefree
approach to life. As my little brother, Wig has been a part of
my life for fifty years and seldom have I experienced anything
negative from Wig. It's not his nature. Regardless of the
situation Wig will find good in it. He's exactly like his dad
who saw life as simple and fulfilling. A loving family and good
friends, a roof over your head, and food on the table is all you
really need. To see life in that light is a gift. If everyone
took that approach it would be a much better place.
Our parents raised us to stand on our own two feet and help our
fellow man whenever possible. People make their own happiness
and fight their own battles. In Wig's situation he continues to
fight, but he needs our help. If this fund drive was entirely up
to Wig he would have none of it. He's a proud man and again, his
father's son. I want him to get better and grow old with his
wife Brenda and kids Justin, Carrie, and Peanut so I'm doing the
asking. I ask you again to please help in any way you can. Wig is
a treasure to all of us. Let's show him how much we appreciate
having him in our lives.

It is good to note that two more members of The Class of '54 have
signed up to be on hand at the Club 40 Annual Meeting/Party. I
would hazard a guess that they will be in attendance at the
Class's gathering at the Community Center on Saturday afternoon,
along with a small host of those who won't be at Club 40 (which
is alright).
On the other hand, just looking at the list posted on the Club 40
Web Page, there are still many seats available not only for
members of The Class of '54, but also others who might want to
join in. I don't think it will be too rousing a time as we would
not want members of RPD to bust the joint. It should, however, be
a good time.
If you have been procrastinating about it, don't delay any
longer, time is running short.

On August 9th it will be 45 year's since the Manson murders. My
life has been connected to that day in several ways. I was in the
same class at Columbia High as Sharon TATE ('61wb-RIP). While
serving in the Army in Southern California Sharon's father, Major
Tate was one of my superior officers. My wife and Abigail Folger
were friends. The two of them drove to where Sharon lived, from
Northern California. My wife had a family emergency, and drove
back home on August 9th. We all know what happened that night.
In 1969 I worked for G.E. in San Jose, Susan Atkins was from
San Jose. Also while working for G.E., I worked with Susan
Atkins' brother for a couple of years. He was a nice guy to
work with. Steve being Susan's brother, would defend her. Which
I could understand. Some interesting thoughts.

Now I've never been the sharpest of the bunch and it wasn't until
the last day of school that WARFORD ('65) and I realized just
how much we had blown it by managing to pass enough classes to
grageate... by then it was too late... I'd had all encounters I
was gonna have with Uncle Tom and it was too late for him to tell
me to turn in my books as they were already turned in for the
last time... the guy Bomber of the dynamic duo celebrating an
anniversary today had it all figured out and had already moved
from '65 to '66 by then and was preparing to move again to '67...
it would be years before I appreciated his genius... that
meant every year he stayed a new crop of sophomore girls would
arrive... I've always commended Jimbeaux HAMILTON ('63) on
swooping in early and finding the love of his life... trolling
was very, very good to him... then of course there was Bob

To the people who are writing checks to club 40 (or anywhere as
far as that goes) Please make sure the numerical number on the
first line agrees with the written amount on the 2nd line. The
bank has now not honored the numerical number on two of the
checks (so they deducted $14.00 from the deposit.)
So say, you wrote your check for $50.00, but wrote out the
handwritten check as fifteen dollars the $15.00 is all the bank
will give me. So please double check the check before you mail
it.
Another example is $136.00 but only wrote $130.00. I would be
short $6.00 on that check. The banks are really getting tougher
and tougher.

So ok... we gotta Bomber-babe that technically, I have known
virtually all of my life... in fact, the same could be said for
Lyman POWELL ('65)... problem is that I don't remember any of
it... no, it's not that my mind is going, though of course it
is... but I was in a diaper and so were they... so I don't member
knowing them all my life and I don't remember them at all till
much later... oh by the way... I was not in the same diaper as
they were and none of us remained in that same diaper for the
whole time... I am sure they were changed regularly, and when you
consider they were cloth, they were prolly changed more often
than these days (not mine... little babies these days)... I just
went out and checked the bin of shop rags and find that diapers
were larger than shop rags which is a good thing because shop
rags just wouldn't cut it specially the red ones or the blue ones
as I am sure they would act much like madras and our little
bottoms would be bright red or blue... well maybe they were red
sometimes... I think I shoulda picked another topic for this
girl... not my fault it just came out that way... oh geez that's

"While most of her classmates at Texas A&M start a new
school year in a few weeks, Lisa Bratton might be
competing against some of the world's best swimmers in
Maui. Bratton, a five-time state champion at Richland
High School, accepted a spot on the Junior Pan Pacific
Championships team after finishing third in the women's
200-meter backstroke Thursday night at the U.S.
national swimming championships in Irvine, CA. The
Junior Pan Pacs are August 27-31, and Bratton says
she'll miss freshman conferences and the first day of
classes. But there's a chance her schedule could change
again. The Pan Pacific Championships are August 21-25
in Gold Coast, Australia, and Bratton could still make
that team at the end of nationals."

Re: '64 in '14 - 50 year reunion
We are at T minus 10 days...
I have received several e-mails in the last few days asking me
about proper attire for out biggest and best reunion yet. Hat and
gloves are optional. Okay, seriously, on Friday we will be on the
patio or in the lounge of the Red Lion. We have been having warm
weather (90°+) so I assume most people will be wearing casual
clothing. On Saturday, we will be inside in a ballroom and most
people will be wearing slacks, shirts or blouses. Some people
will be in shorts and some people will be wearing dresses. The
important thing is that you wear your best smile and come ready
to meet and greet your old friends and classmates.

Yes, it's here again... the birthday of a Bomber-babe who got
away... now each and every year I lament on how I was always
too shy to say boo to this girl and thus... well the rest is
history... I often wonder why, as The King would say, every time
I got near her my tongue got tied when I tried to speak and my
insides shook like a leaf onna tree... I mean geez... she was
(is) a great lookin' Bomber-babe... but that didn't stop me other
times... but... I now realize that lamenting every year may begin
to give the appearance of "begging" and a kool kat of my stature
and all just can't have that... oh no, no, no... makes me feel
like little Anthony: "Take me back I'm on my knees... for you to
scold me, hurt me hold me... darling take me back... "... so as
one learns in Psych 101, it is time to sublimate... what better
way to take one's mind off of one subject than to carry on about
another... "how bout those Cubbies!" has never worked well for
me... as I was driving along a somewhat unfamiliar road today
my mind said (all on its own) "I hate this town"... I was very
shocked at the thought... then I realized... it isn't the town
I don't care for... it is the way it has grown... one of the
reasons I stayed here in the first place is because it reminded
me of Richland with almost limitless entertainment... every
rocker worth his salt used to play here and it was, to coin a
phrase... "A rockin' good time!" Now that got me thinkin' 'bout
Richland which got me thinkin bout the '62 group seven o party
and the '64 50 year reunion... which got me to thinkin bout
people who don't attend... I hate to admit it. but I was hesitant
to go to R2K... it just seemed it would be too big and not
intimate enough... I couldn't have been more wrong... it turned
out to be one of the most enjoyable events I have ever
attended... What a blast! That got me thinking of a buddy of mine
here in Vegas... it was 2000 and his 40 year reunion... that year
was the first Michael Gaughan started hosting the reunions at
one of his Coast Hotel & Casinos... I mean he springs for
everything... rooms food the whole thing... but it was also the
first year they were combining years so the classes of '60, '61
and '62 would all be there... Larry was very excited to see his
buds from '60 but didn't think he'd know any of the others...
after returning from R2K I told him if he didn't go he would
miss something beyond his wildest dreams... he went and returned
beaming... that's the way it is... if you don't attend, I can
guarantee there are kids you will never see again in your life...
you will have missed a chance to see them one more time... Mama
always said: "attrition is like a box of chocolates"... don't ask
why... Mama said it so it must be right... every event is what
you make of it... I can tell you this... you will start with a
little grin... that means yer having fun... the grin will grow...
there will be hugs, kisses, laughter, tears and a whole lot
more... ya see... if I had just taken that girl out back then...
who knows what would have happened... but I missed the boat...

"Lisa Bratton and her Tri-City Channel Cats coach, Todd
Stafek, sat and watched the last of the finals of the
Phillips 66 Nationals in Irvine, CA, on Sunday night.
The Richland High School graduate had held out hope
that somehow she might earn a berth on the United
States? swim team roster that would be headed to the
Pan Pacific Championships, set for August 21-25 in Gold
Coast, Australia. Her finishing time in the finals of
2:11:57 disappointed her. Then she saw a 3 next to her
name. That surprised Stafek, too. Stafek says this is
the first Tri-City Channel Cat to make the U.S. team.
It hasn't come out, but she?s pretty much a lock to
make the national team for the next year, starting in
September according to Stafek."
Congratulations, Lisa!!!!!

week end August 15th and 16th). Sorry I wasn't able to work it

Tri City Herald 8/13/14
A tornado with 70-80 mph winds touched down behind Rattlesnake
Mountain Wednesday evening about 6 pm. John was able to capture
three awesome pictures while in Sunnyside looking toward the
north toe of Rattlesnake Mountain.
We then had a severe storm with thunder, lightning and rain from
about 1 am to 4 am Thursday morning.

On Friday August 8, 2014, '77 grad and Grammy and CMA nominated
country star Michael PETERSON returned to the Mid-Columbia to
help celebrate local veterans. The event was called "Coming Home:
A Celebration of Veterans. The concert was Saturday August 9th.
On Friday Michael traveled to the VA Hospital in Walla Walla and
performed for the patients and staff at the facility.
Saturday the various organizations that provide veterans services
set up information booths around the John Dam Plaza in downtown
Richland and a free BBQ for veterans was provided by Texas Road
House, 13 Bones Urban BBQ and Fiesta Restaurant. The Richland
High Cheer team, Miss Washington Kailee Dunn, Miss Tri-Cities
Samantha Brown and Ben-Franklin Rodeo Queen Courtney Brown were
in attendance to welcome Michael and thank our local veterans for
their service. The event was in partnership with Columbia Basin
College and the Columbia Basin Veterans Coalition. There were
over 2000 people in attendance.
Fellow RHS alum Sean LEWIS ('77) performed Friday night at the
Roxy in downtown Kennewick at a welcome home party for Michael as
well as opening for Michael Saturday in the Plaza. A great time
was had by all!

Today is both a happy day and a sad day. I won't use the opening
of a "Tale of Two Cities"; it is a far-far better thing to do.
Any how, I digress and will now touch on the sadness of the day;
the "King" is dead. Not as tragically as Buddy and Richie, but
sad none the less.
Now for the happy news. It is the day to celebrate the birthday
of a Bomber and fellow classmate. At least, I hope he is, as I
did not see his name as being one who will be celebrating this
September with the rest of us. Still he deserves a tip of the
ol' propeller beanie. A rousing "Happy Birthday!" is in order for
John BRUNTLETT ('54).
There is one name (one of the usual suspects) missing from those
who will be in attendance at this year's Annual Club 40 Meeting/
Party. I trust all is well with him, but it wouldn't be a Club 40
gathering without the presence of one of the chief instigators of
the Club. There are one or two more of those usual suspects still
not on the roster; which will close according to the rules on the
22nd which is next Friday.

I know the seven oh party started on Friday but if'n I'da said
anything I mighta slipped and so I waited till today when two of
my favorite Bombers are celebrating their special dayz... I have
to give a hand salute to Doug HAWKINS ('62) and Craig LANSING
('62), two very deserving Viet-Vets on being presented with
Quilts of Valor on Friday evening in front of friends, family and
classmates. Welcome Home, Doug and Craig!
On this day we are celebrating two very cool Bombers... one I've
only known a short time but have known of him for years. Terry
DAVIS ('65) says the guy turning 71 this year was one of his all
time heroes and kept the bigger kids from messing with Terry and
others when we wuz young'ins... the Bomber-babe, turning 21, has
been a very dear friend for many years... I still swear she is
one of the Bomber-babes Ricky WARFORD ('65) introduced me to on
the first day of our Soph. year even though I must have known her
at Chief Jo... the memory can be a funny thing and it very well
could have been one of those very real dreams that morph into
reality over the years... I can even see the hallway we were
standing in on the occasion... korse it ain't there no more as
that school was torn down around our ears my Senior year... but
it still holds so many fond memories... study hall, eggs and
pennies and the resounding call of: "ANDY!" ringing out... HAPPY

"Richland's Lisa Bratton is scheduled to swim in three
events at next week's Pan Pacific Championships in Gold
Coast, Australia.
The incoming Texas A&M freshman will compete in the
100- and 200-meter backstroke and 200 individual
medley.
Bratton is seeded 15th out of 22 swimmers in the 200
back. She clocked her seed time of 2 minutes, 11.57
seconds during her third-place finish at the U.S.
national championships in Irvine, CA.
Bratton is seeded 16th in the 100 back (1:02:01) and
26th in the 200 IM (2:18:37).
She will compete in the heats of the 100 back Wednesday
night (PDT), 200 back Friday night and 200 IM on
Saturday night. Gold Coast is 17 hours ahead of the

The other day I mentioned how weird the memory can be... I have a
vivid memory of today's b-day Bomber wearing a pair of white buck
shoes... the ones with the red soles... now I know that cannot be
a true memory because those shoes were popular when we were all
still in grade school so there is no way I could remember him at
Col-hi with a pair of those shoes unless it was I-wanna-look-
like-Pat-Boone day or somthin'... But I do remember that he along
with one of his classmates, Mike HUSKE ('64) had the best hair in
school... I remember after duck tails having one heck of a time
getting my hair to do anything... it was just too thick and wiry
for those ivy league hair cuts that became popular... thank
goodness by Col-Hi I was able to escape my dad's high and tight
haircuts... it didn't, however keep me from wearin' that same
danged hair cut for a few years after High School... I happened
to run in to Mike Huske in Olympia last year while attending the
'63 "eating chowder with a girl named Carol inna red sweater"
brunch or whatever Jimbeaux ('63) calls it... well, HAPPY

Re: Club 40 Annual Meeting Registration
Club 40's annual meeting/party date, September 5-6, is fast
approaching and the deadline for registration is even closer,
Friday, August 22nd. Club 40 Treasurer, Ann Thompson, aka Anna
May WANN ('49), has put out the newest list of those who have
pre-registered and there is still plenty of room however she must
have your registration form and check no later than the 22nd
(post mark dates do not count).
One would ask "if there is plenty of room, why cannot we pay at
the door?" The reason: Club 40 contracts with the hotel/caterer
to provide food for a predetermined number of people. The hotel
must have the exact number to be served each evening no later
than the 22nd to assure there will be sufficient food for all
who attend. Additionally, the hotel sets up the room each day
according to the number of guests for each evening. As you can
see, if Club 40 were to allow "pay at the door" there would not
be enough food or seating for those who have registered and
prepaid. Club 40 tried in the past to accommodate those Bombers
who procrastinated to the last moment, arrived at the party
Friday and/or Saturday and paid for that date. We ran out of food
and some individuals that had prepaid not only did not get fed,
their preassigned seats had been taken. Not a very fair or fun
scenario so you can see why Club 40 must adhere to the policy
of pre-register only and registration forms and checks to be
eceived no later than the date determined.
The snail mail is not our best friend at the last moment for
these kind of events so please get your completed registration
form and check in the mail today.

Re: Two busy weeks in Alaska
From Anchorage House on Sunday evening August 17th.
Since we both have houses Jackie in Anchorage and mine in the
Tacoma area we refer to them as "Anchorage House" and "Tacoma
House". We end each year with a stack of flights twixt SEA and
ANC. We are both MVP at Alaska Air. A lot the workers at the "
Slope" (North Slope/Prudhoe Bay area) work 2 weeks on and 2 weeks
off and we see friends on some of the flights.
Jackie and I both took a nap today recovering from her annual
Houston, AK Founder's Day Fireworks display. Last night's effort
was the largest ever. Eight flatbed trailers including one semi-
sized, packed with fireworks. Three of the trailers were packed
with regular display fireworks mortars and the rest were filled
with over 350 of the largest multi-shot devices made. It was 20
minutes of continual blasting the sky with multiple levels of
effects over 300 feet wide and 600 feet high. Jackie fired it
with a borrowed complex computer firing system. I walked through
the launch area watching for trouble or fires. It was almost
surreal with a constant barrage of sizzle, whistle, and banging
all around me. The crowd cheering gets louder each year as the
crowd has tripled in size from my first event there (where Jackie
and I met) 12 years ago this August.
The fatigue and aches seem to take longer to dispel then a few
years ago. I still enjoy entertaining people with fire but may
have to think about slowing down at some point. Something well
over 5000 events in over 56 years and arthritis are taking a
toll.
The launch site is about 80 feet up on a hill above the crowd of
thousands on both sides of the Parks highway. Houston is a small
town of around 900, but thousands came for miles to the annual
event. Games, entertainment, food and tours of the Alaska State
Troopers' helicopter. And while they were waiting for it to get
finally completely dark, the crowd launched hundreds of the
Chinese paper lanterns powered by a small flame inside creating
hot air lift. They drifted on a slight breeze. Beautiful.
It is almost "no rest for the wicked" as we have started this
evening putting together my large display for the opening night
of the Alaska State Fair. We have 5 days till launch of over 600
large display type shells and other effects. I have 90, 2-inch
roman candles for a great barrage at one point during the
display. The weather forecast is for clear and sunny, 70°. We are
trying to get it all on 3 trailers but it may take 4. Assembling
the main battery of the display on trailers allows us to do all
of the set-up of the mortars and pre-wire of the firing circuits
in the played out rock quarry where we have the magazines storing
explosives and equipment. So all we have to do onsite is load the
explosives and attach the electric matches to each lead fuse. The
barge carrying my shipment of the pyro product docked at Seward
Saturday PM. So we hope to have it in hand by Tuesday. The large
display is Friday night with "FIRE 1" at 10PM exactly. There are
a number of RHS alums living in the area. Hope you can enjoy the
show.
Item from our last display which was a burst fireworks at a
wedding... Jackie and I both had to look twice at the matron of
honor, she could easily pass as a double for "M" DeVINE ('52).
The likeness was striking. I know Jackie has related this to M so
I can mention it here. I have heard it said that everyone has a
double somewhere on earth. About 8-9 years after we buried my
father I walked up to and nearly spoke to a man in the subway in
Berlin Germany. He could have fooled members of my family. I was
a bit embarrassed as I walked right up to him before realizing my
mistake and stepped aside just before speaking to him. I circled
around to get a picture of him but he boarded a train and
disappeared.
Jackie and I will miss Club 40 this year as we will be in
Branson, MO for the week long convention of the National
Fireworks Assoc.

David RIVERS ('65) mentioned the Quilts of Valor recently and I
wanted to thank him for his kind words. I have included some
photos taken of the presentation for Doug HAWKINS ('62) and Craig
LANSING ('62) last Friday, August 15, 2014, at the West Richland
Golf Course on the occasion of the Class of '62's 70th Birthday
Party.. I can truly say that I have never been more honored or
proud to be involved with any endeavor. It was emotional for all
who attended. These deserving men were my heroes as a young
person, and they are my heroes today. When I grow up I want to be
just like Doug and Craig.
John COLE ('66) is the leader of the QOV presentation group in
the Tri-Cities. With help from his wife Vicki MOSLEY Cole ('66)
and me, John is doing a great service for the TC combat vets.
John and Vicki do all the heavy lifting and I tag along to
receive some of the credit. The real praise goes to the people
making the quilts. They are all hand made and come from the
heart.
Thanks to the Class of '62 for allowing us the time to present

Terry De VINE ('52) invited me to go to the Seahawks game
yesterday (Friday) and I really enjoyed it! (Except for the wide
spread in the score. He gets upset with me because I don't like
"blow-outs". After San Diego made their 2nd TD, he said, "Okay,
now... you sit back and enjoy the rest of the game!") It was just
the 2 of us so we spent a lot of the driving time talking about
our cousins in and around the Ellensburg area and I think we'll
take a drive up there one of these weeks and see who we can find.
Re: Good Ole Days
A former sister-in-law, Kay Rawlings (NAB graduated in Prosser)
is staying with me for a few months until she can find an
Assisted Living place. We are having a good time talking over the
"good old days" when we worked as Chemical Analysts out in 300
Area in the early '60s. I was her matron of honor when she and
Denis Skeie (NAB) got married. She introduced me to her brother,
Tom, because I wanted to do some remodeling on my Prefab he was a
carpenter. She and I have a long history and lots to talk and
joke about. So far, it is working out very well.
Re: Plums and Grapes
I have lots of Plums and Concord Grapes that I want/need to
share. Had planned on doing some jelly today but instead, spent a
few hours at the ER due to dehydration. Of all the dumb things!
How could I forget to drink enough water??? Anyway, one friend
and her son are coming to get plums in the morning. There are
probably at least 100-200 on the ground (what a waste!) and more
hundreds on the tree! I don't know one plum from another, but she
says they are Italian.

My month in Alaska with family and friends was fantastic but not
quite long enough! My newest great-granddaughter was born 2 days
before I got back. A real cutie!

Finally sold that doggone motorhome. $2,101. The $1? I don't
know. As we were discussing price, it came out of his wallet so
he threw it in with the $100s.
Re: Club 40 - No Visiting Rule
I won't be going to Club 40 this year. Seems like an awful lot of
money to see the 6 or 7 people that I would want to talk with. It
is such a shame that some Bombers ate without paying in past
years, so that now there is no "just visiting" allowed. Sigh.

I was privileged to be at the presentation of the two beautiful
handmade patriotic themed quilts for Craig LANSING ('62) and Doug
HAWKINS ('62). It was wonderful to see fellow members of the
Class of '62 honored for their sacrifice and commitment to our
country in such a wonderful manner... who doesn't love a warm
hug... even on a 95° day. Many thanks to John COLE and Vicki
MOSELY Cole (both '66) and Mick HEMPHILL ('66) for their
commitment to the Tri-City area veterans and the willingness to
do the research and set aside time to honor them with such
beautiful quilts. Someday, I hope to have time to make a quilt
for the QOV program especially after seeing the respect and honor
with which they are presented. Thank you to Craig and Doug and so
many others for your service and sacrifice to our great country.
Re: Growing older ain't for Sissies
It amazes me how one day life is moving along pretty smoothly and
then out of the blue it takes a hard left and you are traveling a
whole new road. I was recently sent to Virginia Mason Hospital
(VM) to try to figure out why I was turning neon yellow after a
relatively quick onset of apparent liver problems. I give credit
to Dr. Sam Datta for recognizing that it would be next to
impossible to diagnose the problem here and referred me to the
Heptology specialists at VM. It took them four additional days of
testing over and above the many tests Dr. Datta had ordered to
finally arrive at a diagnosis of autoimmune hepatitis. No idea
where I picked this up... could have been exposure to a virus, or
an injury or some other toxin exposure... anyway, now I have it
and am looking for advice from those who may be dealing with
their own autoimmune treatment.
I am currently taking 40 mg of Prednislone daily to try and get
all my "liver numbers" back where they belong and it is
apparently a slow process. The side effects of a steroid therapy
are no picnic... jitters and nervous energy bouts followed by the
need to nap (not a bad thing to be sure) plus the added risk for
osteoporosis, weight gain from increased appetite, retaining
fluids, possible onset of blood sugar issues... oh my! I thought
dealing with a long term heart issues was a pain in the patootie!
The doc tells me I may be on some type of steroid therapy for the
long term and am wondering of any fellow Bombers have a similar
experience and can give me advice on how to manage this. Our hope
is to wean me off the pure steroids within 6-8 months and on to a
lower dose synthetic steroid which is easier for the body to
tolerate. (The thought of a 70 year old woman with "Roid rage" is
too weird and scary to contemplate!) I'm ready today! Any advice
on how to manage living with these meds will be taken in the
spirit given but rest assured, the Docs are in charge for now.

Just gotta little note from Doug HAWKINS ('62), I guess some of
the Bombers and famblie in attendance at the QoV ceremony had the
good sense to write and read letters at the ceremony... I was not
that bright and simply called, not realizing that the class of
'62 still throws LOUD parties and none of us could hear each
other... Plan to do the same tonight for this guy... been trying
all week to compose a fitting letter to be read at the ceremony
Tuesday night, but the words would not come. This guy and I have
been through so much together since we were 15 that all words
have failed me. I love him so very much and tell him so every
time we speak and I know he knows how much I admire him... sure I
tease him about having three grageating classes, but my pride in
knowing him needs a safety valve or I'd start blubbering all
over the Internet and you kids would know that my macho, manly,
handsome, virile, cool, calm and collected exterior was just a
facade which would leave me open and exposed to the world, so
I'll just letcha continue thinking I'm all of that above and more
(pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez)... but today I want my dear friend to know
that I am pleased as punch to know him and to be and remain as

So I may be jumpin' the gun but since my favorite editor in chief
and best-ex is going to be leavin' on a bomber-babe's b-day and
comnin' back on a Bomber-dude's b-day (I assume he'll be in
Richland the same weekend) figered I'd best get this little note
on the way... since my yellow stickie only goes to the 26th it'll
give me plenty of time to get the new one filled out... they
usually hold about a month's worth of b-days unless the month was
an over-active one or maybe we have lotsa twins or somthin' like
that... I found some "parking curb yellow" stickies (as Jimbeaux
('63) calls Bomber gold) at Wally World the other day... since I
don't have an office no more I don't have a huge supply closet
and I'm runnin low on the dull yellow the 3M started out with...
plus I could get the wowsee ones cheaper than the boring ones...
not sure why they're all 3M... but these are more in keeping with
the ol' Bomber spirit... the Bomber-babe is one I've known for a
long time but not from school... she had a biiiiiiiiiiig secret
to keep when her other half... nah... more than half was getting
a Quilt of Valor the other nite and she managed to keep it tho I
do understand that Bill BLANKINGSHIP ('62) and Steven ADAIR ('08)
managed to park their cars in front of the restaurant... but the
boy just figured they wuz gonna join him fer dinner (I just hadda
flash back to being 16 or 17... for some reason I needed to fill
out some form and it musta asked for work history and I couldn't
spell restaurant... my Dad gave me such crap about that I
couldn't believe it... as tho working at one created a sicheashun
such that one could also spell it... go figure spelling,
punctuation, parts of speech and times tables were just in that
little group a stuff I refused to learn... funny how you look
back on your life and wonder what was the underlying factor in
choices made... so many things I did that make no sense today
musta seemed like a good idea at the time... Kinda like kids in
cars uttering the magic words: "watch this" that guarantee
something bad is about to happen... so here we go with early

Well, you haven't missed it all, even if you didn't get your pre
registrations in by the deadline yesterday (8-22) for dinner with
us at Club 40, our classmates still can come to our 60 YEAR class
reunion for the class of 1954 at the Richland Community Center
on Saturday, September 6th from 12 noon until 3 PM. We will have
group picture taken around 1:30 PM. We WILL take walk-ins and
you can pay at the door, as Jim MEFFORD and Don RAY will be the
"greeters". So, please be sure to give them your 20$, so you can
get a copy of the picture and help with misc expense for room
rental and booklet and snacks.
You still have time to get money to me, if you want, and
information on your life for the booklet. I will be closing it
out on Wednesday, August 27th, so I can get it printed. With the
Labor Day holiday, it will take a little longer.
Send it to my e-mail or mailing address at 4223 Galway Lane,
Pasco, WA 99301. We have some interesting bios and fun things to
read already!! Hope you get yours in there too!! Feel free to
call me for any questions at 509 544-0393. It is important that
we have your address, as the photographer will be mailing your

Re: Thanks for a great 50-year Reunion!
Thanks to the talented, hard-working, generous Class of '64 for
treating me (a former teacher and fellow Bomber) to the most
successful single-class reunion I have ever attended! Not only
was it the biggest class reunion to date with 155 attendees, but
it was put together with great thought throughout the entire past
year by Kathy HOFF and the largest and most dedicated reunion
planning committee I have had the privilege to witness.
Joke-telling, skits, Bomber cheers, special banners and
decorations, authentic hula instruction, original music and
lyrics, inspirational guitar music, and a series of conversations
with former students made many special moments.
Food service was efficient. There was no standing forever in long
food lines. On the first night, simple taco bar service was
continuous throughout most of the evening. The sit-down dinner on
the second night was pure genius. The Red Lion servers worked
hard, and we older Bombers sat at our tables, relaxed and
conversed while being served a choice of three delicious entrees.
Club 40 should try this next year! It was no more expensive than
buffet service, and much more fun for the attendees.
The bucket list of one attendee included making it to his 60-year
reunion. That's a worthwhile goal. Having seen two partners and a
growing list of friends fail to make it that far, I urge you to
meet more often .. or as often as you can.
You are also invited to attend a Memorial Service/Celebration of
Life for the love of my life, Charlie GANT ('53-RIP). Come to the
Sunset at Einan's Event Center at 3pm on September 4, 2014, the
Thursday before Club 40.

He is a fellow member of The Class of '54; he also played
clarinet in the band and drove airplanes for the air corps over
Viet Nam. He's also done a few other things in life, but as far
as I know, he's not coming to the big party. So what? Let's all
join in for a hearty "Happy Birthday!" for Jerry SWAIN ('54).
Speaking of not coming to the Big Party is one of The Founding
Fathers. Apparently he doesn't like the Dessert Inn/Hanford

At 3:20 AM this morning [3/24] my wife and I felt like were at
the Social Club or Hi-Spot when the Napa Quake hit... really
rocking and rolling. We lost some stuff (nothing that can't be
replaced) and are OK. No one in the neighborhood was injured and
as far as we can tell there is no structure damage. Downtown
Napa, on the other hand, did not fair as well. Some historical
buildings are damaged to the point that they may have to be torn
down. The bright spot: I only lost two bottles of wine!!!... but
we will have a purple spot in the middle of the white marble
entry. We'll just call it our accent spot.
It's now 3:10 PM and I am so tired and sick of cleaning up stuff.

Okay, I'm kidding, but put 2019 on your future calendar. The
BIGGEST and BEST reunion ever was just that. 155 classmates met
at the Red Lion for a wonderful time. Our committee received so
many compliments on a job well done. We danced, we sang, we ate,
and partied till the cows came home. There were hugs and laughter
wherever you looked. A bunch of "kids" rocked out to '60s music
provided by an excellent D.J.. Our program consisted of talent
from our very own classmates. Joe KEEFE, and his wife Sharon,
Diane HILL, Gail PLEE, Jim HODGSON and Don DOUD provided us with
great entertainment.
We were fortunate to have two former teachers join us: Rex DAVIS
('49) and Norma LOESCHER Boswell ('53). I was fortunate to have
had both of them as teachers. Rex had a list of 40 "kids" he
wanted to visit with, and I think he touched base with all 40!

Re: Thanks for a great 50-year Reunion!
Thanks to the talented, hard-working, generous Class of '64 for
treating me (a former teacher and fellow Bomber) to the most
successful single-class reunion I have ever attended! Not only
was it the biggest class reunion to date with 155 attendees, but
it was put together with great thought throughout the entire past
year by Kathy HOFF and the largest and most dedicated reunion
planning committee I have had the privilege to witness.
Joke-telling, skits, Bomber cheers, special banners and
decorations, authentic hula instruction, original music and
lyrics, inspirational guitar music, and a series of conversations
with former students made many special moments.
Food service was efficient. There was no standing forever in long
food lines. On the first night, simple taco bar service was
continuous throughout most of the evening. The sit-down dinner on
the second night was pure genius. The Red Lion servers worked
hard, and we older Bombers sat at our tables, relaxed and
conversed while being served our choice of delicious entrees.
Club 40 should try this next year! It was no more expensive than
buffet service, and much more fun for the attendees.
The bucket list of one attendee included making it to his 60-year
reunion. That's a worthwhile goal. Having seen two partners and a
growing list of friends fail to make it that far, I urge you
local Bombers to join Club 40 and meet every year!
You are also invited to attend a Memorial Service/Celebration of
Life for the love of my life, Charlie GANT ('53-RIP). Come to the
Sunset at Einan's Event Center at 3pm on September 4, the
Thursday before Club 40.

Re: Classmate of '54
Does anyone have an obituary or information on the passing of our
classmate, Walter MILLIRON ('54-RIP). Heard it was mentioned in
Herald a few weeks ago.
Also, Mural NICHOLS Patrick's ('54-RIP) brother, Jack ('54),
told me that his sister passed away in 2010. She was our
Valedictorian. She lived in New York and was married to a doctor
from Sacred Heart in Spokane. He had passed away before her.
So sad we are losing friends too early. Another one I am
concerned about is Jim BUTLER ('54). His mail comes back and his phone
is disconnected. He came to our last reunion and Club 40 and
usually calls me to get form for dinner, but I have lost track of
him. He lived in Prescott, WA. He has a daughter in Richland, but
don't know her name.
Now that our Club 40 registration is closed, it is fun to see the
classmates who have successfully registered. Our webmaster, Nate,
will get the names up soon.

As it stands now, we have 42 coming Friday and 51 coming on
Saturday nights for dinner. Some will only come one night, so
it's hard to tell you which ones are new. The registry will show
that.
Our Saturday afternoon roster shows 54 coming so far to celebrate
our 60 year at the Richland Community Center... and we will have
some "walk ins"!! Several have sent money for the picture, but
are unable to come. We should have a great group this year and
expect lots of fun. I expect we might have some show up who said
they won't!! We'll see! Excited to give out the souvenirs and
door prizes!!
I know of some who are coming that I haven't seen in 60 years!!!
Wow!!

Notes & Comments from this past weekend in Richland... I'll make
effort... but not too much to 'funnel' this all together in one
direction.
Thursday 08/21... left Almota, WA at 12:30 PM in search of
'adventure' in Richland at the Hanford House. Arrived at 2:28 PM
and was greeted at the door by Coach Rex DAVIS ('49) who was
meeting up with Gary SETBACKEN ('64) & Aaron HOLLOWAY ('64). I
sat down in the lobby, which became my 'comfort zone'. Not yet
quite settled in, Marilyn BRASFIELD ('64) entered and check in. I
had spotted her on Facebook a year or so earlier. It happened to
be her first reunion and over the next few days we ran across
each other a number of times.
Note to participants of any reunion... Rather than showing up
for just the Friday or Saturday functions or both activity days,
IF you have the monies & time, come a day early and stay a
day or two late. There will still be folk around looking for
conversation. Stay at the hotel where ever your reunion is being
held. Eat at the hotel restaurant OR find out where everyone
is going and eat with them. Make early reservations (a year in
advance if you can). Try the courtyard/river side if your reunion
is at the Red Lion aka Hanford House [aka Desert Inn].
Don't be afraid to be a 'worker bee'. There were 15 to 20 1964
Bombers preparing for Saturday's events on Thursday night. Gary
SETBACKEN's (64) wife Cissy took a big part in helping. Once Gary
is no longer around I'm sure that Cissy will be his replacement
for years to come at our reunions. I'll no doubt leave some names
out but on Thursday night, Carol CONVERSE ('64), Susan BAKER
('64) Jeff BOSTON ('64), Phyllis CUNNINGHAM ('64), Ken DALL
('64), Gail FRANZ ('64), Kathy HOFF ('64), Gail PLEE ('64), Betty
Jo ROSE ('64), Frank STRATTON ('64), Grace TYREE ('64) and Jamie
WORLEY ('64), the SETBACKENs and a handful of others (plus or
minus).
By the time we broke up an hour or two later, a number of other
class members were coming through the doors as planes, boats,
trains & cars arrived.
Before I forget it, the help at the Red Lion was fantastic with
Dave the 'coordinator' working with Kathy, Nancy in the
restaurant and Mary at the front desk.
Randomness ~ There is talk of another 'bash' two years from now
when most of us turn 70 years old... I figure that will work and
it sounds like a lower key gathering than the 50 year. However,
there was a bit of discussion about our 60 year reunion. By that
time most of us will be 78. Now for you ladies, that is of no
real issue BUT you may have to count the guys out on that one. It
seems that the average U.S. man lives to be 77 and a fraction.
P.S. I had placed a request back in the Alumni Sandstorm ~
03/04/2009... it read "Re: Mulberry Trees along the
Columbia... Can anyone provide photos of the mulberry trees that
are/were located several hundred yards up the Columbia River from
the Manolopoulos home on Hains. There were 4 or 5 very large
trees...
I did find what's left of them. Right where I remembered BUT they
certainly have not been kept up over they years and according to
Frank STRATTON ('64) some were cut down.

It is 'just a rumor' about my Columbian yearbook purchases. I
will admit to buying almost all of Art Dawald's annuals but that
was 15+ years ago or so. Yes it is true that I have 2 or more
sources in the Tri-Cities that watch yard sales for Columbians,
Keewaydins (Kennewick High School) & Sinewesahs (Pasco) annuals
but how do we measure success when the need is great? I've
purchased, traded, begged and borrowed 1964 Columbians only to
pass them forward to those who never purchased one or have since
graduation lost theirs. How much fun can one stand? There is a
call for a 1963 Columbian BUT I don't have one. I do have one

It's come around once again. Funny thing about birthdays, they
seem to happen once a year whether we want them or not. Now I
had best be careful in what I say next, as the Junior Gyrene is
greatly enamoured of this Bomber Babe. Then, again, that happens
to him a lot with other Bomber Babes as past issues of this
journal will attest. Of her, I can safely say, that we know each
other and became acquainted through Club 40. All that being said,
a tip of the ol' propeller beanie is in order. Let's have a
hearty "Happy Birthday!" cheer or two for Kathy HOFF ('64). In a
very few years she will be old enough to legally enter the better
watering holes in the Tri-City area.
It would seem that the polls have closed and all the absentee
ballots been counted with respect to the annual Club 40 Meeting.
To those of you who missed the deadline, sorry, but "no soup for
you." To those who did make it, it promises to be a fun weekend.
There will be some "new" faces for The Class of '54's 60 year
reunion.

...speaking of Katrina in 2005, I just read a book on a massive
flood on the Mississippi in 1927 when they still had wetlands,
called "The Tilted World" by Franklin and Fennellhy. Very
interesting!!
[Aaron Neville mentions the '27 flood in one of his

June and July we can't stand the few hot humid days we've
had. Fall is in the air and will rescue us!!

My sister, Debbie NELSON Burnet ('77), has a store called
Whimzees in Richland --- in the same building where the B Reactor
tours are. She sells refreshments to tour groups but collects and
displays memorabilia of Richland's history from HEW furniture to
Bomber mushroom cloud stuff and even stuff from the present Col-
Hi student store I picked up. I gave her my Chief Jo and HS
annuals to display and probably sell... if the price is right!
Just saw Gary didn't have a '63 which I'd sell becuz I think like
him... won't mean anything to my kids except mom's pic is on Page
123 (not really) and they will look, laugh and wonder why I wore
those weird glasses, had puffy hair and wore a black sweater
exactly like everyone else. (Today, it's a photo shoot out in a
field with multiple clothing changes to share on FB or Instagram)
Email her. Bet she would love to have them.
And new "People" magazine has Sharon TATE ('61wb-RIP) pic on
cover. Unfortunately so is Charles Manson

Of course we KNOW that Jimmy HEIDLEBAUGH ('65) has known her
since kinnygarden, that's one of those things everybody knows
like 15 minutes can save you 15 percent... but didja know that
she is also one of the mysterious wimins that Ricky WARFORD ('65)
introduced me to on the first day Ricky and I attended Col-Hi...
at least that's the way I remember it... tho again, why would I
not have met her earlier... that part I can't figger out... that
introduction may just be another Urban Legend that only exists in
the buttoned downed mine of this author... anyway it is a better
one than "words really can hurt you"... then again another thing
that everybody knows is that this Bomber-babe really knows howta
throw a party... witness last weekend, R2K and on and on... Oh I
would never say she does all this stuff by herself... a careful
look behind the scenes and you'll find a crew of Bomber-babes
working with her and even a Bomber-dude now and then... funny
tho... you will almost always find Linda BELLISTON Boehning ('63)
somewhere, as I understand was the case last weekend... as well
as Carolyn ROE and Lamont DEJONG ('63/'63)... see how that
works... Bombers with Bombers having a great time together... I
watched last weekend unfold thru the pictures the '64 kids posted
on the '64 Facebook web site they have graciously allowed me to
join... it was good to see Rex DAVIS ('49) made good on his
promise and that Jim HOUSE ('63) showed up as well... Marilyn
BRASFIELD ('64) finally made it to a reunion... I'd have loved
to see the meeting between Marilyn and my old flame, Darlene
HUESTIES ('64)... remind me to tell the story about how Marilyn
and I "found" each other in Las Vegas... I must say tho that PJ
('64) never did send me any of the racy pictures she promised...
sometimes I think that girl has just ditched me for a younger
guy... that's ok... I can still swoon over the b-day Bomber-babe
as I have for years... HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Kathy HOFF ('64) on your
special day, August 30, 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Settling down
Ruth and I have been "wandering" in our fifth wheel trailer since
Jan. 2013, and has been mostly enjoyable - but it seems time to
"get off the road". We are in Richland, and yesterday signed a
contract to purchase a townhouse here. Nice development between
GWWay and Stevens Drive, just west of Hanford High School.
In today's complicated marketplace it may take up to 6 weeks to
"get in the door", but the sooner the better!
We look forward to being bonafide "Washingtonians" again!

Re: Forever in our hearts
Friday, I spent quite a bit of time thinking about Sharon TATE
('61wb-RIP)... Terry DAVIS ('65) and I shared a few thoughts...
and for him it was very much a "Where were you when..." event...
he was in Germany waiting for something from Susan ('64) and he
saw the paper... he said there was only one German word he knew
on the headline... which was the story of the murders... I was
still in the Marine Corps for a little bit... it was prolly
around the time the SgtMaj snatched my short-timer's stick from
my hand and screamed; "Only officers are allowed to carry swagger
sticks!"... I went to the company clerk and we ordered every
magazine and joined every record club known to man in the
SgtMag's name... man I sure gotta lotta records outa that deal...
but today I've been thinking about another Bomber that we all
loved and miss terribly... another one of a kind... Richland is
kinda famous for one of a kinds... tho there is a rumor out there
that I know "everybody", this guy really did know everybody and
everybody knew him... he was a jokester, a card, a Kool Kat and
above all a dang good friend... I enjoyed him so much that I even
named a car after him... one of my fondest memories is of Marv
STEEL ('65) and this guy roaring off on their Bikes with Terry
DAVIS hanging on to the back of this guy's bike screaming: "I'm
hanging out with Shelley McCOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ('63 RIP)" I
thought I had a picture of it, but I guess it is just a very
vivid memory... so the enclosed will have to do. Been 12 years,
Shelley and you live in my heart for ever!
