HI Y'all; now that I'm a Licensed Sandstorm Contributor. I note the reference Today, 7/30, to "angry in Seattle, and not about the weather." Hmm. Maybe it's the Seattle metro area housing market?? Having to pay Tens of Ks $ in RE tax on one's actually rather modest home? Merry and I moved South from Kirkland to little 'Ol Sumner, WA 16 years ago, seeing that prospect on the horizon. But now it's spreading our way too! Some might instead think "Mad Seattle" is political; but we don't do that here on Sandstorm, do we? Nahh. We do still see ourselves as adherents of the Seattle Ethic, and we're not angry. Just working for Better than Now. Anyhow, about the Weather. Several decades ago, after a couple of those past, pure luck bonanzas in the housing market, we thought "hey, let's Party;" and Travel All Over the World. In 1990, a year after touring the Florida Atlantic Coast and Keys, we decided to see the FL Gulf coast. Tripped to Clearwater Beach, FL; and promptly fell in love with it. 'Tis HOT down there. Later bought a cute little old house there, to "commute to seasonally." Vintage 1954, tiny 2BR 1BA, 5 minute walk to the Beach then ranked "Best Beach in the US." And sitting with a round robin of neighbors at the end of the beach boardwalk, yapping and watching the sunsets daily. By the early 2010s we woke up to how fast "2 houses" at that distance can trash your "nest egg;" we panicked, and sold out in 2010. And we cherish having what is essentially a "surrogate family" of neighbors and friends down there still, whom we'll fly down to see at least annually so long as we're still on our feet. Next door neighbor "toddlers" who're now HS graduates, and many neighbors now as old as we. Oh, wait. Right- this was about the Weather. Well, down there, you just learn to have it and enjoy it. You schedule your trips to any "paved parking surface" outside the "blast furnace" hours. And we did set our multi-month terms down there to avoid the hottest months. Yet up here, I DO have to be a little careful not to be cranky when it's the 90s. Enough of my blather. Our best cheerful and positive wishes to Y'all RHS brothers and sisters, (including you youngsters of the '60s. [happy face]) -Allan AVERY ('54) and Merry Bradison Avery ('59 Oakland, CA) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) Gotta tell ya, David ('65), we had air conditioning in the pre-fab on Sanford. Granted it wasn't the refrigerated stuff you get nowadays, but it was A/C. All right, it came from a swamp cooler, so it was only, maybe, 5 to 10 degrees cooler than the 20 degrees cooler advertised at the Uptown. And that was back in the early '50s. Enough of that, as today marks two important events. One is a Bomber Babe birthday and the other is an anniversary/birthday sorta thing. I know the young lady in question, having been to several Bomber lunches. I didn't have an internet connection when the other event came along. A tip of the ol' propeller beanie and a "Happy Birthday!" to Ann ENGEL ('63). And three cheers to the Alumni Sandstorm on its founding day. =Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) ~ Mount Angel, OR where highway construction/confusion goes on despite the temps ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Barbara SESLAR Brackenbush ('60) Re: Class of 1960 Bomber Luncheon DATE: Saturday, August 4, 2018 TIME: 11:30 a.m. WHERE: 3 Margaritas (downtown near Lee Blvd.) Spouses and friends are also welcome! I think my recollection is correct, but maybe not. Maybe Gaynor DAWSON ('65) remembers more about this process, since he was involved in all our activities. In 1964-1965, I was ASB President. During that time, we hired a company to design our logo (and also the class rings, I think). The name "Balfour" is the one I remember. This design went through some type of process in our school, and we then had the logo. The logo has been the source of some controversy, given the bomb on it, but true Bombers have always had pride in the symbol! And it was such a great school to attend! Maren, thank you for all the work you do on the Sandstorm publication. I am always amazed at the memories of fellow Bombers, and it is nice to see the name of our classmates in the postings. -Bob LeCLAIR ('65) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: David RIVERS ('65) Re: 20 years?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As a retired Union Ironworker, he was asked to go to New Orleans to build the new VA Hospital. When I got the dues renewal notice from Maren, I sent her an email asking if I could just deliver it to her in person (she didn't know I was living right across the river from her)! We were able to get together a couple times while I was living down there. Maren, I sure do miss those catfish po'boys. He grew up in Yakima, and like me, used to play outside all day during the summer (well, actually not like me since I spent all of my summer days at the big pool when it opened every afternoon). I told him they must be inside on their tablets or video games. He just shook his head. Even our kids (who are in their 40s) still played outside in the summer. -Anita FRAVALA Griffin ('73) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Jim RICE ('75) Remembering Bomber dad Rudy Rice -- father of Jerry ('71), Randy ('73), Jim ('75), Cathy ('77), and Leon ('82). And I did. Now I find I have to mention her again as she is having a birthday. Did I also mention in that bit that those from North Richland out numbered Richlanders 4 to 2? Well, we did. A tip of the ol' propeller beanie and a "Happy Birthday!" to Peggy SHANNON ('55). Just because it is your 21st doesn't mean you have to drink the Uptown Tavern dry. We had one in Richland when I was just a little kid, like many others. (As a side note, we also used double fans in windows at night where one would blow in cooler outside air in one window, like in the bedroom and another would blow the hotter inside air to the outside in another window, for example in a dining room window.) What I wanted to say was that some years ago, my dad had a hearing aid office in a small, old building owned and housed mostly by an insurance business and he got very sick with a pneumonia type illness and put into a hospital. A year before I had taken a virology lab course at CDC in Atlanta and learned how the Legionnaire microorganism was discovered by accident. The investigators were strongly convinced that it was a virus caused disease and in their egg cultures for viruses they kept coming up with this bacterial contaminant which they initially discarded. They eventually put 2 and 2 together and voila! They determined that this bacterium was causing Legionnaire's disease and was probably growing abundantly in swamp coolers. The organism is now named Legionella pneumophillia. Dad's office was being cooled by an old swamp cooler on the roof top of that building and I tried to contact his doctor and talk about this to him. I was constantly put off and never able to talk with him. Dad's symptoms were classic or this disease. Dad eventually recovered and returned to work after an extended recovery time. However an antibiotic would have taken care of it in very short time if administered. (Another side note: After Mt. St. Helen's blew it's top off and flattened much of the forest around it, they found in the lakes that survived the blow, that they were inundated with an over abundance of microorganism of which one of the most abundant was Legionella pneumophillia.) -Diane AVEDOVECH ('56) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Paula BEARDSLEY Glenn ('62) Re: Replies to other beloved Bombers Re; Sandstorm Anniversary. ... Along with so many others I want to thank Maren (and Gary) for their work the last 20 years on keeping the Bomber family connected. Altho I don't write in often... and I should, I know... I read it every day and love knowing what is going on in Bomberland wherever you may be. Please don't ever stop!!! Re: Boat Races I am one of those who has been to almost all of the races over the years. I think I have only missed four so far. Now at 74, it is not quite the party time it used to be but still fun nonetheless. Hanging out with our son, daughter-in-law and two grandsons, ages 11 and 5 and other inlaws and outlaws made for a great day. Those pop-up tents you saw Carol CONVERSE('64) - some are personal... we had two of them set up for our group on the Pasco side and two large floating "islands" anchored in the water for our cooling station. There is a large section on both sides of the river that is set aside for "corporate" or private paid parties costing several thousand dollars each. Also sponsors of the races and VIP and Handicapped accessible areas are tented also. It is a very family friendly event now and that was mostly what was surrounding us. Of course there are always those few who overdo but for the most part, other than being pretty warm this year, it was a great three days on the banks of the Columbia. Great races this year, they even brought some of the "old" Allison powered boats back for a few laps which brought the thunder we remember from the early races. The 5 liter boats are noisy and fun to watch and the air show was divided up into two segments so there was something happening most all day. I highly recommend you come next year and check it out if it's been a while... Columbia Cup Race 2019 will be July 26-28. My husband and I volunteer with the Pasco Kiwanis and work the gate at Rd. 46/47 from 6:30 til noon... we get into the races for free and a cool volunteer T-shirt. Races are free on Friday for anyone, a weekend ticket for Saturday and Sun cost only $25 for adults and $10 for kids 6-12 so it isn't a really expensive event. It would cost you that much to go to a movie and it only lasts a couple of hours and is way less exciting to watch than five hydros screaming down the river 200 feet in front of you at 180 MPH or acrobatic jets flying over your head. Come join me next year... Maybe we can put together a Bomber reunion. I hope y'all keep those posts coming in. I'll try to do better myself. We can't have Maren sitting around with nothing to do but eat po'boys all day. I'm off to find my sweater...it's cooling off to 101 in the Tri-Cities today but we have blue skies for a change. The wind must have shifted and has blown the smoke away. Hope it stays away... -Paula BEARDSLEY Glenn ('62) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Nancy MALLORY Johnson ('64) Re: Swamp Coolers Swamp coolers was mentioned today -- we had one. It was in the back corner of the house (precut) -- not by the bedrooms. Must have cooled us some. Later Daddy got a couple of window units (living room and his and Mom's room). [Makes me wish I'd paid better attention. We lived in an "L" house and our swamp cooler was in my folks' bedroom on the 2nd floor. How did they get that up there? Maybe brother Tim ('62) remembers. -Maren] Re: Highway Construction Highway construction was also mentioned (is there a place this is not happening?). We are having that on the bypass highway here. Already going on and they expect it to take till 2021!?? In addition they are building a round about (do you hear the cheers? NOT) on highway 45 (main drag downtown). It's anybody's guess where lane closures will occur at any given time. esp. weekends. This extends to I-40. These two roads are the main ways to get between the N and S sides of town. -Nancy MALLORY Johnson ('64) ~ where we are still having a "cool" (mid 80s) spell, but expect it to go back to 90s by the weekend. Several years ago, one of the big topics on the Sandstorm (much like the Cloud and the R) was the first baby born at Kadlec Hospital... there were many names thrown about... then one day John CORRADO ('64) and Janine RIGHTMIRE ('65) set me of photo of the two of them with another guy, telling me the guy was the first baby born there. The story seemed to be corroborated by others and shortly after that this guy and I became fast friends on Face book and email... to this day, I have not met this great friend face to face, but the discussions we have had let us know we have so much in common. Even more surprising these days, is that we do not agree on many political subjects... what a concept.. I have friends I ran with all my life in Richland who barely speak to me because of politics... I also have many friends from this guy's class as a result, at least in part because of my friendship with him! OK, I've said it before... I love being a Bomber... Just a question... Re: "Angry In Seattle" And as for "angry in Seattle"...Absolutely true, "it's not about the weather," nor is it even about the topic of "politics"---a hot button forbidden on the cordial pages of Sandstorm. What a welcome and reliable oasis of civility, these pages, in turbulent times... So, instead of politics in general, for readers far and wide let's try just local history and the local culture in angry Seattle. A revealing part of the local history is that that neighboring Shoreline---my home---incorporated as a separately-governed city in 1995, partly to avert rumblings about being annexed under the thumb of the Seattle City Council. A good move. Back in the '80s and '90s the Seattle Council already found itself eminently qualified to pronounce on international issues, and more credibly, formed sister-city partnerships around the world, including Tashkent (Uzbekistan) and Chungking (central China). Too bad about local potholes. Haven't heard much about this agenda preoccupation in recent years. But in the mid '80s, and as an obscure bureaucrat, I found myself to be the only one who actually showed up at my place of employment to do show-and-tell with the visiting City Engineer and City Manager of Chungking, with a Communist Party official serving as "translator" (and clearly as short-leash political chaperone). A totally disjointed conversation when it touched against American city politics and the Constitutional division of powers. As for the Seattle local culture---again deeper down than the political winds that blow---the last mayor was run from office less than two years ago after being hit with five credible allegations (...nuff said). And today the Economy-thingy has annexed both the City of Seattle itself and the hot-seat Council chamber. Amazon has ingested much of the downtown for its tens of thousands of employees, driving commercial property rates as high as Chicago and forcing home prices up higher and faster than anywhere else in the country. The median home price in Seattle, up 12 percent from last year alone, is now $819,000. In this one example, the flip-flop clown culture (the Council) voted first and unanimously to impose what was actually a small head tax on local corporations to offset the cost of one of the worst on-the-street homelessness crises in the country (some or much of it self-inflicted), then flipped in the face of public outcry (also both real and contrived)---and arranged to do so through emergency closed sessions in violation of the Open Meetings Law. The beat goes on. Meanwhile the suburbs refuse to endorse additional publicly funded heroine injection sites (!) more or less, surely less, contained and supervised. The clown image---as seen from both ends of the political spectrum---is that of a ball-bearing bouncing down both left and right through a pin-ball machine. As a still-stable Council member in the relatively innocent 1980s (and some still exist) confided to me: "It makes good theater!" Never forgot that sage insight. All this now against the backdrop of increasingly controversial and cumulative property tax increases, both state and local. To notice that the conversation has broken down is not a political statement. It's more about culture and theater: "We're not in Kansas any more, Toto." -Pete BEAULIEU ('62) ~ Shoreline, WA ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Carol CONVERSE Maurer (Magic Class of '64) Re: Boat Races Thanks, Paula BEARDSLEY Glenn ('62) for mentioning the tents at the boat races. When we lived on Torbett, my dad hired high school guys to make the pads (I remember their cool cars). I made them on Snyder Rd and Wellsian Way during high school. I was paid 10 cents a pad, no matter if they were 10x10" or 10x10'. They came in all sizes. We had bails of balsa wood, (excelsior wood) which I fluffed up, a table with sizes and I used large rolls of cheesecloth to measure, cut and then staple together. That wood got everywhere on me making those pads. It was my job to make them during the summer months. I also sold them to folks out of the Wellsian Way location. I remember once an older popular HS football player showed up to buy them. I was so embarrassed because I was covered with the stuff. Having seen the commercial made cooler pads, I can understand why people got sick. I have never seen one that looked as good as the ones I made, all fluffy with the ability for air and water to pass through. Having made thousands of cooler pads in my youth, I never got sick, just a little itchy from the woods being in all the wrong places in my clothes! My dad and I also replaced cords and tape for Venetian blinds. We also did a lot of washing of Venetian blinds for people.. It was my time to spend with my dad. He had one other side thing that he did under Payton's name and that was repairing furnaces. Once he was working on ours on Torbett and it blew up burning all the hairs off his face. It is funny how you remember certain things about growing up. He was a handyman for sure, not always successful in his endeavor, but he worked hard to make a go of if for my mother and three younger sisters: Angela ('69), Kelley ('72), and Karis ('79). -Cindy PAYTON Hoffman ('65) ~ Santa Fe, NM ******************************************* ******************************************* That's it for today. In the right locale such as ours, they can be wonderful. A dry climate is essential to make swamp coolers effective. We live at 6,000 feet in the foothills west of Denver, in a fairly dry zone. We have an average of a little over 100 inches of snow each year, but it's such a dry snow that our annual precipitation is still only 19 inches per year, less than half the national average. We installed a high tech version of a whole house swamp cooler in 2007 which means the home isn't closed up in the summertime - it's ventilated and cooled. I can recall maybe two times in the last decade when we would have been more comfortable with refrigerated air conditioning. What's a high tech swamp cooler? It's a Breezair from Australia. To drain it in the autumn I just push a "drain" button on the remote control. The pads never need changing and I've never bothered to cover it. -Ed WOOD ('62) ~ Morrison, CO ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Dennis HAMMER ('64) To: Floyd MELTON ('57), Gary TURNER ('71), et. al. Re: Swamp Coolers I thought swamp coolers worked good when you have a dry climate like we have in Tri-Cities. A lot better than nothing, which is what we had until I was in High School. I never felt the extra humidity but could tell if we left a bag of potato chips or crackers open. I wouldn't call them soggy, but they sure weren't crisp. One evening in High School I spent several hours at someone's house (church meeting?) who did have a refrigerated air conditioner. My allergy did not bother me one bit all the time I was there. Told that to my parents and shortly after dad bought a used air conditioner from someone he worked with. We ran a wire in the "B" house basement over from where the dryer would be if we had one. Parents had a washing machine but used indoor and outdoor clothesline until they retired then got a dryer. There was a metal plate came with it that we had to attach to the window sill with a string of wood screws. Got it running and parents complained it was too noisy. Time to go to bed and they went to turn it off. I did get them to leave it on but shortly after mom got up and turned it off, so I got up and closed my door trying to preserve what filtered air there was in my room. Next day dad took it out and back to the guy he bought it from. Here I thought they bought it for my hay fever and they didn't even give it a chance! We spent more time installing that air conditioner than we did using it! I don't know why they thought it was too noisy, it was no louder than any other air conditioner. After getting out of the Navy my mother-in-law gave us an old swamp cooler which I had to fix up. It worked good until July of 1975 or 1976 when a bunch of humidity rolled into the Tri-Cities and stayed here for a month. I was working in a building in the 300 Area which had a swamp cooler system and with the extra humidity, it was miserable at work and at home. My wife saw that J. C. Penny had an appliance sale so we went out there, stood in line, and bought a little 5000 btu AC and put it in the bedroom window. We had a "portable," what they called them in those days, TV we brought into the bedroom, closed the door and did not leave it except to go the kitchen or bathroom. We used that setup for several years in two "B" houses before we got two refrigerated air conditioners for the whole house. I remember the Uptown Theater had a number of large downdraft swamp coolers on the roof. Soon after we moved to Richland I walked there to see a matinee "The Parent Trap" and thought it was so cool in there that I really did not want to leave. I also remember in the '70s eating at the Atric Circle and watching them working on taking the swamp coolers out and replacing them with refrigerated air conditioners. -Dennis HAMMER ('64) ~ in the Tri-Cities where it looks like we are going to need a lot of air conditioning this week. ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Susie DILL Atlee ('64) Re: Swamp Coolers http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Dil/180805-Car_Swamp_Cool.jpg We had one in our "F" house, in the window of the stairwell landing. I was so excited to see my new look. When I got home I went to the mirror. I looked... .. like Frankenstein's monster. Two large red-purple-black triangles under my eyes, stitches on my eyelids and eyebrows, and blood trickling down my cheeks from the corners of my eyes. It's now Wednesday, and the only change is the bruises have more purple. Okay, the purpose was not to make me more handsome but to improve my field of vision. I had my annual eye refraction in February; the optometrist referred me to the plastic surgeon because she believed my puffy eyelids and eyebrows restricted my field of vision. She said to wait until after the surgery to get my new lenses. It took six months for the health plan to approve the surgery. My eyesight still hasn't returned to pre-surgery level - I can see distance, but can't read small print (so please excuse any misspellings here). Net result: I'm still not handsome, and I need another eye refraction. Re: Swamp Cooler We had a swamp cooler in our ranch house, installed in the living room window next to the driveway. As you would expect no bus load was alike. The one constant was the "deer in the headlights" look from many of them. Every guide is given a D.O.E. approved script. The size of Hanford, various buildings, when construction started, flora & fauna you get the idea. Borrring. Needless to say I kind of blew thru that (it was a point of contention for those who wrote it when they came along) and concentrated more on the people aspect with stories of former residents and workers. I feel the human aspect melds well with operational history. A recurring question was "how much Plutonium was produced?" classified or no comment was my reply. The one question I always expected how do I feel about the bombs? Full disclosure, when I was younger my answer would have been less than stellar and certainly harsh. For one thing I never had a child overseas in circumstances I can't fathom. I had to form an opinion from those who were there. To sum up their responses, I hope it will end the madness / Pearl Harbor / I owe my life and our 70 year marriage / it was a terrible thing I feel for the Japanese people. One time the question did come up "I wasn't there so I can't provide something definitive. What I will say there really are no winners, each side loses a great deal." I replied. As I said yesterday it's not about the use but rather the technology over a very short period of time. Of course some feel otherwise and that's okay especially if you lived then. I'm sharing today's with y'all: "Re: Chrome's Built-In Ad If you stopped using Chrome to access the internet because of the constant pop up advertisements, you're in luck! Now, the user's experience on the web can go back to being peaceful with Google Chrome's built-in ad blocker. The over-sized and in-your-face pop ups are a thing of the past. According to the research done by the Coalition for Better Ads, the most frustrating ad to web users was determined to be the full-page advertisements that block the whole page's content. Often overlooked, Google Chrome's specific ad blocker was even installed on smartphones and tablets. Google's ad filter checks a websites URL (web address) against a long list of websites that are known to fail the Better Ads Standards. If the sites images are associated with improper ad placement, they are flagged. Basically, if sites do not comply, they will see a drop in revenue. Google reached out to many of its end users, warning them of the incoming changes and if they were violating them with their ad placements. So far, 42 percent of the violators have corrected their infractions. The end goal would be to have no need for Google's Built-In Ad Blocker technology! All in all, Chrome wants to make their browser the most user friendly by taking away the intrusive ads. Our aim is to teach all of our readers things they want to learn or may be interested in. Please email me with topics you would like to see covered in future letters. I'll pass that along to MyComputerWorks.com For one-on-one help save our number and give us a call. Kennewick dropped a 6-5 game to Phipps Park All-Stars (West Palm Beach, Fla.), as its rally in the bottom of the sixth inning fell short. KA finished 3-2 in American Division pool play to make the jump to bracket play, but Florida outhit Kennewick 9-4 and its pitching staff recorded nine strikeouts. Florida, the No. 3 team from the National Division, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, only to see KA come back to even the score as a Dylan Mamiya single sent two runs across the plate. Florida would score twice more in the second and led 6- 3 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Morgan Dodson and Karson Rawlings hit back-to-back singles with one out. Dodson scored on a fielder?s choice, while Rawlings went home on a single by Angel Correa for a 6-5 game. Florida ended the game with its ninth strikeout of the day. Kennewick?s pitching staff of Correa, Trayce Teagle and Hunter Van Hollebeke combined for eight strikeouts. John Cimballa went 2-for-3 for Florida, driving in three runs. Julian DeJesus and Alonso Delgado each hit a double. Delgado also pitched the first four innings, scattering three hits and striking out seven.? A simple, but very necessary, operation. Buy the filter, get your favorite oil or whatever is cheap. Raise the car high enough to get underneath, safely with NO bumper jack, remove drain plug watch oil go into pan remove / replace oil filter, remember to only go 3/4 or so of a turn after contact, before new installing new filter be sure old gasket is not left behind. Leave that on and it's another story, definitely a case of two is not better than one. Re-install oil plug and only tighten a bit snug, its only oil not Plutonium Nitrate. Put in fresh oil run engine to check for leaks stop engine check oil level dispose of oil per local laws clean up and put tools away. Should take about 15 or so minutes right? Now that's how it goes when you do your own. What's it like to change oil after a business has changed your oil? Well let me tell you, tonight I helped change oil on a truck that had its oil changed by "professionals". Trying to remove the oil plug I almost had to use a cheater bar on my wrench to just get it loose. I knew then this was going to be "fun". Removing the oil filter took 15 minutes because who ever put it on felt it had to be so tight the filter wouldn't come off if the truck ever needed to go supersonic! Luckily a screwdriver never came into play. So over an hour later mission accomplished. I should mention the previous oil change cost 80 bucks. Who knew you had to pay that much to endure frustration a few months later. Oh well first world problems. These pictures, I think, replay what Hanford was like so many years ago. On occasion we had safety contests where management offered a challenge to meet a specific goal and if accomplished they would "reward" us in some fashion. At 222-S Labs we met one challenge and the reward was Wayne Louk, Lab Manager, would push an egg across the parking lot with his nose. Well the egg morphed into a very large tape ball created by the graveyard shift. There's a video of the whole affair perhaps one day I can put it on line. In the emergency of war our nation's powers are unbelievable. The strength we have spread around the world is appalling even to those make up the individual cells of that strength. I am sure that in the past two years I have heard soldiers say a thousand times, "If only we could have created all this energy for something good." But we rise above our normal powers only in times of destruction... I hope that in victory we are more grateful than we are proud. I hope we can rejoice in victory-but humbly. I have twice dropped non-performers and picked up another couple of stocks. One was a tech stock and another was in marijuana. Still waiting for the "boom" in pot stocks. Things have been relatively flat for weeks now. Then suddenly last week 2 stocks started to climb. One tech stock is up about $300. and zowie one pot stock shot up over $2000. I immediately sold half of it and invested the $1000 in a another stock that is climbing. So now I am operating on what they call "house" funds. I got my original investment back and have more stock to boot. There is an amazing amount of advice available in the market. Lots of free advice, most is worth what you pay for it, and, there are the programs and for the large investor hedge funds.. Many of the programs are solid and will help you make a profit. But just as many can be worthless. Joining a program should only be considered if you have the funds to pay for the program and have funds left to invest. Had I invested the $5000 or more to get into a program I am reasonably sure I would have made double my investment by now. However there is also a fee of some percentage of any profit you might make using the program. And since you buy your stocks through the program they have control and will exact the fees from your profits. My advice for what it may be worth is take lots of time to study and compare programs before investing in one. Most are NO REFUNDS. I am not pretending to be any kind of authority just passing on some of what I have found in "playing" the market. So... from my original investments of the $2500 I set aside for investing in the market, I am up about $2240. And I own more stocks. More as it happens. The mission was to attend my 50th anniversary of '68's graduation and catch up with a lot of hometown friends. My spouse, Lyn DREHER ('69), and I left Richland in the late '70s and other than a couple of pass through trips, haven't spent much time in the Tri- Cities. We were blown away by the growth. A lot of the landmark buildings from our youth were gone. Our first home was in the Gribble apartments on Gilmore St. They are totally gone. I worked summers for the City of Richland, in the huge hanger type building, that served as the maintenance shops, also long gone. We ventured out to Bombing Range Road to visit Jim ADAIR ('67) & Kathy MOORE Adair ('69) and found hundreds of houses. It doesn't seem that long ago that it was a actual bombing range on a long dusty gravel road. Our Reunion was beyond a blast from the past. The tour of Col High (RHS) was one of the high lights. There are so many changes since June 6th, 1968, which was the last time I was on campus. The Boys gym and Mac Hall looked the same, although our Mac Hall was torn down and a new building was built on the original foot print. The science labs that were upstairs are now down stairs, and nobody knows what happened to Mr. Carlson's alligator. It seems like the tradition of riding a motorcycle through Mac Hall is still alive & well. The rekindled friendships and the trip down memory lane energized us to literally dance the night away Saturday night. Sunday's conclusion was a very touching memorial, placing 84 roses in the Columbia River. One for each classmate who has passed. Many thanks to the group of volunteers who made this the most memorable reunion yet. -Karl SOEHNLEIN ('68) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Ken STALEY ('68) Happy birthday to my strong and lovely "little sister"... V-Mail is short for Victory Mail, used in WWII. In the summer of 1963 not too long after my maternal grandfather had passed we made a trip to Missouri. I brought back a kerosine lamp, a chocolate box full of old photos, and found this little letter that I thought looked interesting. I didn't know until years later (but before Internet) what it was and about V-Mail. You got a form on a regular sized sheet of paper. The little circle on the top left was for the censor to approve. It was then photographed onto a reel of 16mm movie film, one sheet of paper for on one frame of film. The film was then flown across the pond, then developed and printed on small paper, folded over such that the address was in the window of the envelop and sent through the regular mail. It was much smaller than the original so it could be harder to read. Trying to go through my stuff and see what I can get rid of I found it. Haven't seen it in probably 30 years or more. It is from an Uncle and the funny thing is, it addressed to my parents, not my grandparents. I do not remember ever noticing that, and I am sure I never actually read it. I did find it interesting that the Dutch were still wearing wood shoes, I thought they only did that on special occasions. This V-Mail was written February 22, 1945, when I was just 22 days old, and mailed from wherever in the U.S. March 5th. My parents may have mailed it to mother's parents, or, I like to think maybe they took it with them when they went to show me off to my grandparents. Google maps shows 54 minutes to 1 hr 13 minutes to get to the two cities the farms were located near, but back then roads were probably not as good and WWII speed limit was 50 mph. Dad being a farmer probably had easier time getting rationed gas. http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Ham/180821-V Mail.jpg If you find the photo hard to read and still want to read it, I have transcribed it as written, I did not use (sic) and I would have to use it several times. "P. S. I am in Troop A not E. Feb 22, 1945 Dear M & H, How dose this find you? fine I hope, I am ok. Just received a V-mail from you so will answer it before I forget. Send me some of that candy you make please. Your V-mail was clear and was sure glad to hear from you. If you have trouble getting the sugar don't send the candy I just put this request in here so you could show this if you did make the candy. I am somewhere in Holland and they still wear wooden shoes. Ha! Some of the dutch have leather shoes but not so many. The dutch people are very nice to us as a whole. Before he left Dad made a list of possible countries he might be in, and numbered them beginning with one. He made a second list for the notebook he took with him, with the numbers and the corresponding countries on separate pages kept in different parts of his notebook. Censors always read the letters to make sure the writer didn't include any sensitive information, like where the writer was. Whenever he wrote Mom he would say, "I'm writing this to you at 7:04PM." The minutes gave Mom the number of the country he was in. Only once did the censor cut out the time. Then one day Mom got a V-mail from the Marines telling her Dad was listed as Missing in Action during the Battle for Iwo Jima. He was a gunnery sergeant back when they repaired guns. He was scheduled to go ashore on D-Day plus 3. He didn't show up on the beach, so he was MIA. Turns out he was still on the ship. While the trailer with his tools was being loaded, the landing craft capsized and the trailer ended up at the bottom of the bay. He had to wait until they could get a replacement trailer to him before he went ashore. I don't recall Mom keeping the V-mails from Dad, but she did keep the one from the Marines, which I got to see. By Annie Fowler Richland, WA -- "With a borrowed suit jacket and tie, and a fresh haircut, Travis BUCK ('02) was introduced Monday as an assistant coach for the Boise State baseball team. But there is nothing second-hand about his baseball knowledge. 'Travis obviously has major league credentials, but more importantly, he is someone who cares about helping young players reach their full potential, both on and off the field,' BSU coach Gary Van Tol said in a news release. 'Having him next to me in the dugout and assisting our coaching staff will make a huge impact in our success. Our program is going to benefit tremendously with his knowledge, experience and presence on the field and in the dugout." BUCK's full title is director of player development and bench coach for the Broncos, who will return to the field in 2020, their first season since 1980 when the program fell to budget cuts. 'Gary called me back in June and gauged my interest in coaching at the Div. I level,' BUCK said. "My goal before starting TBuck Training was to be a Div. I coach. I knew that wasn't going to happen right out of the gate. Gary and I see things similarly. For him to reach out was pretty cool. I wasn't actively looking. He recruited the you know what out of me.' Taking the BSU job meant giving up control and cutting all ties with TBuck training, per NCAA rules. BUCK, 34, started the program two years ago to help area youth baseball players bring their game to a higher level. 'That was a tough decision," said BUCK, a 2002 graduate of Richland High School. "TBuck helped a lot of kids and got them exposed to bigger things. The parents were upset at first, but they were happy for me.' Former Richland player Jarrod TURNER ('11) and others have taken over the program. BuckHighSchool.JPG Richland's Travis BUCK knocks down a line drive in a 2000 game against North Central. Buck went on to play at Arizona State University and six years in the major leagues. HeraldFilePhoto.jpg 'I will be watching from afar,' BUCK said. 'Jarrod came on board this past year. He said they would run it while I am gone. That meant a lot to me that they wanted to help out the kids in Eastern Washington. We have built a powerhouse in two years. We have had kids go on and do great things.' Now, he can do the same with the Broncos. 'That's what got me excited,' BUCK said. 'How many get a chance to put their fingerprints on a program from the start? This is our chance to get it right. As a coaching staff, this is a huge year for us. We are looking forward to it.' Boise State recently received approval to use eminent domain to acquire land where the school wants to build its baseball stadium. They hope to have it completed by opening day in 2020. 'The city and the university are buzzing about Boise State baseball,' BUCK said. 'It's an opportunity for Northwest kids to potentially play Div. I ball. Growing up in the Northwest and being a success story, it is possible.' BUCK also will take this next year to finish his business administration degree online through Arizona State University. 'I am about three semesters shy of my degree,' he said. "My mom (Vicki STICHEN Bricker '67) is a vice principal at Richland High and has been in education for 30 or 40 years. I'm not only doing this for me, but for her.' THE BASEBALL LIFE BUCK was drafted by the Seattle Mariners right out of high school, but he chose to attend Arizona State, where he ranks eighth in career hits with 272. He twice was named a Pac-10 Conference first-team outfielder (2004-05). TravisA's.JPG Oakland Athletics' Travis BUCK during a 2009 spring training baseball game against the Cleveland Indians in Phoenix. Eric Risberg AP In 2005, BUCK was drafted in the first round (36th overall) by the Oakland A's. He spent six years in the major leagues with three teams = Oakland (2007-10), Cleveland (2011) and Houston (2012). Injuries (torn hamstring, left ankle reconstruction) derailed the last two years of his career. He had a .243 career batting average, 197 hits, 20 home runs and 95 RBIs. His last major-league appearance was in 2012. His wife of nearly eight years, Summar, is supportive of his decision to go to BSU. 'It helps not having any kids,' he said. 'My wife pushed me. Anyone who went to school with him, should do the same. You will find pictures and his life story. After going to WSU, Larry went to New York in 1965 to the Mannes School of Music. He became known as the "Godfather of Fusion" and became world wide known, performing with Miles Davis and Jimi Hendricks and many others. He recorded over 100 albums/CDs and played guitar in several different bands. I know there are most of the family pix in that trunk but I won't be seeing them... long story, don't ask and I won't tell... I can see I need to pay better tension to my cheat sheet as I missed Donni CLARK ('63) on the 23rd... it is totally in huge letters... I always forget to check the Bomber Calendar and add more arrows and lines from names to dates... yup I'll start first thing inna morning... Now today we gots us an Arteest... truly so... I always marvel at what has become of many Bombers... Now it ain't that this kid got off on the wrong foot or anything... well, maybe sometimes, but as talented as he was it is just great to see that he followed his dream or at least it appears so... of course if he wanted to be Crocodile Dundee he totally blew it... Who knows... I started at 14 and I know this guy started early too as he was the "go to guy" for many kids I know... I remember my Dad making fun of me as I sat in the basement smoking my ciggies... he thought I looked stupid... good call, Pop... today I've been helping my daughter, Sarah, do things around her house... lotsa "Dad" stuff... she always puts on "my" music when I'm working there... it's really "our music" as she grew up with the '50s and '60s on the radio alla time... In those days at Col-Hi, we would drive around with the best hook up we could afford and try and learn the words of inaudible phrases that came through the set up... today, I listen to '50s on 5 and '60s on 6 and can hear alla words clearly... dunno who re-wrote so many of those songs... new words pop up every day... When she was little, Sarah would sing about the "Little Blue Scoop"... while she may have got the main line wrong, she is the one who sang at the top of her voice "and there's one more thing, I got THE PINK SLIP DADDY"... I always mumbled that line... now I know that this will come as no surprise, but I use crappy little speakers in my hot rods to mimic the old sounds... First in their listing is Mesa, AZ, David DOUGLAS' ('62) humble abode and next to my locale of Tempe, AZ. Second in the list, however, of great places to retire is none other than RICHLAND, WASH! Some of the amenities described are: ~ 300 days of sunshine and less than 8" of rain annually. ~ Outdoor recreation is big with the Columbia River being a playground for all sorts of aquatic activities. ~ Locals enjoy the Parkway shopping area, home to farmers- and-artisans market in the summer. ~ The region is the health care hub of eastern Washington, with three large hospital systems: Kadlec, Lourdes in Pasco and Trios in Kennewick. ~ No state income tax. ~ The Tri-Cities Airport offering direct flights to Seattle and elsewhere. The article does mention that, "Richland boomed during World War II as thousands of workers came to produce plutonium for the Manhattan Project [and] Richland is still a center of scientific research... ." For comparison, the other areas mentioned are Portland, ME, Lancaster City, PA, Williamsburg, VA, Lexington, KY, Columbia, SC, Johnson City, TN and Venice, FL. But, is there a comparison? That violated your rules of no political content, and I for one don't want to see it in my Alumni Sandstorm. On another topic, I was amazed a couple of days ago to see the entry listing Richland Number Two in the nation (!) as best places to [retire]. Now, I bow to no one in my love of Richland as one of the best places to grow up and raise kids, especially back in the day. It was Norman Rockwell's America, where you didn't need to lock your house when going away, there were no homeless, crime was almost nonexistent, etc. I hope it is still so. But I submit to you that anyone who would make that list has NEVER actually lived in Richland. What they said was great about the town is more or less true, though I think they over-hyped the recreational aspects. But how about the merciless broiling summers, the sometimes cold and windy springs, the long gray winters, the treeless landscape, the abundant allergy woes, and the lack of culture? I'll always love the memory of growing up in Richland, but those are some of the reasons I moved away circa 1972, and won't come back until I'm in an urn headed for Einan's. As usual, I missed sending him a birthday wish on August 7. Mike, Jim "Pitts" ARMSTRONG ('63), and I were sort of the ?3 musketeers? in high school and at CBC. We hung out a lot together. A lot of good memories. I missed not being able to get together with him and Pitts after I moved to Mississippi in 1965 with my parents. We would talk on the phone once in a while, but with him living near San Jose and me in Louisiana, it wasn't easy to get together. We did the state basketball tournament, worked in the peas, and were roomies at the 2003 Class of '63 Reunion along with Pitts. We had a great time together. It was so cool, that I got him and Pitts to fly down here to the Bayou and stay with me and have a little fun. I think they stayed 3-4 days. The highlight was driving to Vicksburg, MS to do the battlefield tour. We rented the top floor of a famous historic mansion and did the B & B thing. Jefferson Davis stayed there and gave a speech from the balcony sometime before or after the battle. Little did we know the place was haunted, especially on the 2nd floor. We had no "visitors" though. Then we did the town and the battlefield tour which was about 15-20 miles long during which I got sick from one of my many ailments. I survived and we did a tour of a little battlefield museum where Pitts (like me a Civil War buff) got into a discussion of the battle with one of the tour guides, which since he was a "yankee", didn't seem to please the guide, since some of his remarks weren't too flattering re the Confederates. Anyway, it was fun and added to the long list of good memories. In fact, I was going to call him at the 55 year Reunion which he was supposed to attend. I regret I didn't call him before the reunion. Anyway, Mikey, you will be sadly missed by the other two Musketeers, your family, your Army buddies and classmates. My deepest sympathy to his wife, kids, brothers, sister, and rest of the family. So until we meet again at the final reunion, goodbye old buddy!! The 3 musketeers will reunite again!! Bomber tears from the 2 other musketeers, Sad on the Bayou -Frank WHITESIDE ('63) ~ Bayou Gauche, LA ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Carol CONVERSE Maurer (Magic Class of '64) Re: https://www.findagrave.com/ I, too, love genealogy! I started looking into my family back in 1979. I felt very lucky that I had newspaper articles about my father's side of the family to make it so much easier to start out with. Long story short, I just finished up inputting all my family (on my father's side) into Ancestry.com. I had made a booklet years ago so I thought it would go fairly fast. I was wrong?? You just keep going deeper and deeper into the lives of people. I used https://www.findagrave.com/ as much as I could. I'm one who wants to find as much information on each person as I can. It usually leads to another person that you didn't know, etc., etc. Did I say that I also inputted my husband's family as well? Poor Frank, he was starting to think that he should get a sleeping bag and make my meals as I was shut in the craft room for several hours each day for about three weeks or so. After I give myself a breather, I'm going to be inputting both our mother's side of family as well. Getting your DNA done really helps as well with finding family you didn't know you had. My family has a private page site on Facebook that has tons of family members from all over. So much fun getting to know cousins that you didn't know you had. -Carol CONVERSE Maurer (Magic Class of '64) ~ Kennewick where we can once again see blue skies and breathe in fresh air ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Dennis HAMMER ('64) Re: https://www.findagrave.com/ When I first found the Find a Grave site a long time ago they only had graves of famous people. There are a couple of headstones I have found that Sandstorm readers might find interesting. The first I ran across quite by accident. It is a stone of a Jane Doe in Boulder, CO murdered in 1954. She was the victim of a serial killer and identified 55 years later. What I found interesting was the way they incorporated the original Jane Doe headstone into the new one. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/8715050/dorothy-gay-howard Both stones are shown, but Find a Grave has recently changed their website from a nice simple clean site that was easy to use into a clunky new mess, so to see the stones you are going to have to figure out where and how to click. This is the worst "improvement" to a website I have ever seen. I will still use the site to get the information and contribute to help others researching, but using this new clunky site is no longer fun. One in my family I thought was interesting. It is my gr-gr- gr-grandfather John McMasters in Lawrence County, TN. There is a new stone laid in front of the original that gives his name, birth and death dates, (old stone is weathered and hard to read) then says it is the "oldest known grave." https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/16879537 The designer of the 50 Star US Flag has an interesting story and an interesting headstone. I knew it was designed by a student, but saw his story on TV and looked it up on Find a Grave. Here is a link to an article about him and the flag design. As it has a photo of his headstone at the bottom of the article I will just include the link to the article. I know where the 50 star flag was first officially flown. The new flag was supposed to be first flown July 4, 1960. Flags on ships at sea are flown 24/7 and because of the position of the heavy cruiser USS Saint Paul CA-73 near the International Dateline she became the first to fly the 50 star flag. I know this because I later served on the Saint Paul. -Dennis HAMMER ('64) ~ ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Harvey IRBY ('64) Re: 50th Anniversary 50 years ago today in Seattle, I exchanged vows with a very special woman who remains a very special part of my life to this day. Uhhhhhhhhhhh not yet... but this afternoon I've been texting till my phone battery is almost dead... I am a very bad texter as Terry DAVIS Knox ('65) and Mary Lou WATKINS ('63) are well aware... I finally got a little tablet but my fingers hit about three keys atta time... My SEAL buddy had heart surgery today and somehow I became point man... he's doing fine, but trying to alert everyone was something else... As I turn my phone off around 7 pm, I still don't feel the "need" for a smart phone... when I was a kid, if someone called after say 7 it was kind of a sin... as I got older, I think talking to girls tho was fine... but just let that phone ring around dinner time and the stuff would hit the fan big time... still works for me! When yer buddy is having a heart attack, however, getting the message inna morning can cause some splanin' ("hello... if this is an emergency call 9-11")... well I've said it many times... in fact, just the other day... "What's inna name?" A rose is a rose is a rose (but what kind?)... ahhhhhh but there are some names that require nothing more... "Divine" is a perfect example... I say it and at least 1/2 of you know to whom I refer... the rest of you better get educated! Early next month I'll be headed for Richland and will be able to wish her a tardy HB in person... can't wait... now I am the first to acknowledge that Jimmy HEIDLEBAUGH ('65) has known her way longer than I... this Bomber-babe is one of those people that walks the walk... when she speaks she is not just talkin', she is working on the current project as hard or harder than anyone... we all know, love and appreciate her... oh sure... some of us are more gaa gaa than others but hey that's just the way it is... This is a big change and one we welcome. If you have your old blue card they ask for it or tell you to cut it up as it is being phased out. I just thought I?d pass this along as football season is now underway and so is volleyball. My granddaughter, Sydney JENKINS (?19), is playing her last season in volleyball for the Bombers as she will graduate in June from RHS and CBC. I can?t believe how fast my grandkids have grown up! I doubt if I will attend many games after this school year, however, Lance goes to all of the basketball games and many of the football games. Re: Court of Dreams Dedication On our way home we stopped by the basketball courts at Columbia Playfield to see the transformation that Jim HOUSE (?63) is responsible for undertaking. The workers were getting ready to put up lights and basketball hoops and it looks amazing! We'll be there next Saturday, September 8th at 4pm for the dedication. With how much youth sports mean to this area it?s a crying shame that our local newspaper has chosen to dismiss covering any of the games. -Marie RUPPERT Hartman ('63) ~ in just perfect weather for Labor Day weekend Richland ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Susie DILL Atlee ('64) Re: No More Politics, Please I agree with what's been said the last couple of days. Re: Justin FRICK ('11) [NO LINK HERE cuz the Herald won't let me see it -- I'm over my quota for the month!! =Maren] THIS TRI-CITIES RAPPER SOLD OUT THE UPTOWN THEATRE. NOW HE'S WINNING MUSIC VIDEO AWARDS By Sara Schilling August 29, 2018 07:42 PM Richland, WA -- "A popular Richland rapper is celebrating another milestone in an already banner year. The video for Kyle 'Karma' Schmoetzer's song 'Sugar' has been named Best Music Video by the Oregon Independent Film Festival, the 23-year-old announced this week. 'It's mind-blowing. We're really happy. We're really excited about it,' Karma said. 'Sugar' is a meditation on temptation, and the music video is stunning and imaginative. Richland native Justin FRICK ('11) is the mastermind. The 26-year-old, who's made a name for himself as one of the region's most in-demand directors, said the win means a lot. 'I think this is a cool little sign that we're doing the right thing and we're heading in the right direction. It's nice after all the work we're constantly doing to have one quick breather and look at an accomplishment, and then keep going,' Frick said. Jon Timchalk, known as As-Is, produced 'Sugar' and helped with the music video. Arta Marie and Gabriel Powers provided art direction. Karma released the video for 'Sugar' earlier this year. In it, he sings and raps while buried in actual sugar - FRICK and the crew used 250 pounds of the sweet stuff in the shoot. The video also features other arresting visuals, from glitter-painted people to scenes shot at The Spudnut Shop. 'Sugar' is the title song off Karma's latest EP. After it dropped, he headed out on a successful West Coast tour, then came home and headlined one of the Tri-Cities' most talked about concerts in recent memory. karma behind the scenes pic.jpeg Behind the scenes of the music video for 'Sugar.' Director Justin FRICK is at the far right. Courtesy of Justin FRICK The show was a sell-out, drawing more than 600 people to the Uptown Theatre. Karma is working on new music now; watch his social media under the handle @karmaknowz for the latest. FRICK also has more music videos shot, waiting for release. 'And he, Karma and Timchalk are 'working really hard on some new music and some new music videos,' said FRICK, whose website is ajustinfricktake.com. 'That's always in motion.' They're thankful for all the love that's been heaped on 'Sugar.' 'We're really grateful, at the end of the day. It's really cool how the community has supported us,' FRICK said. 'We have all these people supporting, rooting us on.'
