Happy belated Birthday to that cheerleader extraordinaire
from 1953... Stan "the Man" McDONALD (from that great class

keep things easy, he married a McDONALD ('53) - no relation,

This is somewhat of an important date. It would seem that
the "Alumni Sandstorm" was brought kicking and squealing
into what passes of internet life. That you to those of
you who did all the initial work in getting it started.
The is also a Bomber Babe having a birthday today. I didn't
know her back in the day as she is a much younger lady. Think
she might just be old enough to visit a place where adult
beverages are served.
A flourish of the ol' propeller beanie and a "Happy

Dear Bombers,
In my constant quest to "get rid of stuff", I was going
through some pictures today and found this cast picture of
the Richland Light Opera production of "Bells Are Ringing."
I'm not sure of the year... thinking it was 1961-'62. Ellen
WEIHERMILLER Anderson ('63) & I were dancers & singers in it
(they must have been desperate!), and our hair was short...
so know it was our sophomore or junior year. Does anyone
recognize themselves or anyone else in the picture? I hope
you can enlarge the picture... I just took a picture of it &
sent it! Anyway... a fun memory of a short stage career!

So Happy Birthday to Wayne MYERS '62'.
Grew up with him there around the Perkins/Van Geisen
neighborhood. He was three grades ahead of me at Jason Lee--
which is a lot of grades, according to the odd algebra that
usually governs childhood friendships--but he was the kind
active, good-natured older kid that becomes a natural leader
among the swarms of other neighborhood boys.
I mean, he was the pitcher for our Cub Scout softball team,
if that gives you any idea. And he was never a bully, which
was most important of all.
His family lived right there on the corner of Perkins and Van
Geisen, in one of the big old original farm houses that were
there from before the prefabs and the grade school were built
up around it. There wasn't even a fence between their front
yard and the school playground. Wayne's dad used to stand in
their yard and hit fly balls to us out there in front of the
school building.
The trees around the yard were old cherry trees left over
from when the neighborhood was a cherry orchard. There were
old cherry trees spotted here and there all up and down
Perkins Street.
Wayne had an old spotted white dog and a large white goose
that were inseparable. They never left the yard, but they
didn't need a fence with that dog and that goose patrolling
the boundaries, the goose right alongside the dog. Always,
almost forever, it seemed like, that dog and that goose
standing there side by side in Wayne MYERS's front yard.
Thanks for the memories, Wayne. And Happy Birthday.

Your story in yesterday's Sandstorm brought back memories of
when we moved to Richland. We lived in one of the original
houses on Cullum Ave. Our neighbors on Lee Blvd were the
Peddicords. He was the postmaster. Next to them were the John
Dams. We all know who he was. Next to them were the Stollers.
They owned the Laundry and Dry Cleaners. Across the side
street (the name escapes me) from us also on Cullum were the
Fergins. He was the superintendent of schools. Their youngest
child, Truman, was the same age as I, so we did everything
together. We roamed the streets before they were streets, we
investigated empty houses, and we patrolled both the Columbia
River and the Yakima River, as well as the little streams
that ran through parts of town. One day I came home with a
turtle about eight-inches long. I kept it in a box in the
kitchen until one day it turned up missing. Mom never
admitted it, but I think she dumped it out away from the
house, so I wouldn't find it again. Those days growing up in
Richland back in the 1940s and 1950s were unique, as well as,
a great place for curious young boys to explore their limited
world. We used to sleep out, where the Fred Meyer store sits,
along an irrigation stream that fed Welsian Lake. We'd bury
some potatoes in the sand, build a fire upon it, wait one
hour, and have the tastiest potatoes ever. Alas! Those days
are gone forever!

Re: Newfangled Licenses
I'm guessing that many people are going to be caught without
that critical "gold ball with a star in the center of it" on
their driver's license come October 1, 2020 either because
they didn't know that they needed it or because they couldn't
get it for some reason.
I felt really out of touch for only recently hearing about
the Federal Real ID Act until I found many hearing about it
for the first time from me. The Act was passed in 2005, but
apparently it wasn't too pressing since they didn't start
implementing it until October 1, 2016 and on top of that
without any fanfare. I got my license renewed in 2016 before
they started issuing the newfangled licenses so I must now go
back before my license expires in 2022 if I want to fly or
enter a federal building after October 1, 2020. I'm sure many
others are looking at an unscheduled trip to the DMV just
like me.
The plot thickens. I've talked to people in my state who
didn't know anything about the Real ID card even though
they renewed their license after October 1, 2016 because
apparently not all states require drivers to come armed with
a list of personal documents, i.e., birth certificate, social
security card, etc. in order to get the new right-to-fly
license. I'm happy not to be facing any kind of lengthy
and demanding process, but disturbed at what little the
government at all levels and the DMV have done to educate
the public.
You obviously live in a state that has a stringent process in
place. I'm glad that you are going to be able to come up with
your marriage license so that your wife can prove her name
change, hopefully once and for all. Nobody should lose their
right to fly for simply being unable to comply with a request
for documents that were obviously already provided at one
time in order to obtain a license in the first place or for
any other equally uncalled-for reason. From the time that I
first learned how to write my name, I have left the "e" off
of my middle name. It has never created any problems for me
before, but who knows about now.
The more that I look into the matter and ask around, the less
sense the whole Real ID card thing makes to me all the way
around. Why are some states more stringent than others to
the point of being totally unreasonable? If the name on our
license can never be changed and the information on the
documents that allowed us to get a license in the first place
can never be changed, what does the gold ball with the star
in the center of it say about us that our license didn't say
before? Why are the new licenses just about flying when they
in no way distinguish the bad guys from the good guys since
citizens with ill intentions possess the same required
documents as everyone else? Will some lifetime, law-abiding
citizens suddenly find themselves unable to fly and what will
their recourse be? And the list of questions goes on.
Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems like renewals are
being made into a bigger hassle than normal for the DMV and
for drivers for no worthwhile reason.
It would be interesting to know if any of you are hearing
about the new licenses for the first time or unexpectedly
find yourself unable to obtain one.

so googled. - Maren

In addition to your noting Wayne's childhood menagerie and
July 30 birthday, he also still has all of his hair and still
looks pretty much as he did in high school. Living proof that
there is no justice in this universe! His classmate and wife,
Lyndy, also has not lost her luster. (Enjoyed their company

Today Wayne is prominently an American Rose Society Master
Rosarian and Life Member, plus Deep South District Chairman
Consulting Rosarians, and American Garden Rose Selections
Chairman of Judges and Gardens.
All this from his home more than a few miles distant from
Richland, in historic St. Augustine, Florida (where,
incidentally, a colonial/mission Thanksgiving celebration
took place in 1565, almost two generations before the
"first" at Plymouth in 1620).
All this a reminder to smell the roses along the way...

I think a lot of us may fail to stop to observe in amazement,
awe, and overwhelming appreciation what the Sandstorm and the
RichlandBombers.com website mean to us - have meant to us for
21 years. (Think of that! The Bomber class that graduated
this year wasn't born until 3 years after the Sandstorm
was!!)
I do not know of one other school with this kind of network,
which allows us the ability to keep the memories alive, and
share them freely via the Sandstorm, and go back to revisit
them on the website.
We are able to share news, joys, sorrows, and everything in
between via the Sandstorm. (I even was blessed with a big
freezer and a fridge from Dennis HAMMER ('64) this year,
through a Sandstorm connection! Thanks again!).
You've probably read before how my late husband, Thomas
PEASHKA ('68-RIP) and I reconnected in 2001, 33 years after
we last saw one another at graduation. We were married in
2004. This happened because of a Google search he did that
popped up with a Sandstorm entry of mine from 2000. He
e-mailed me, and the rest is history, as they say.
Many of us have reconnected with old friends/acquaintances,
made new ones, and delighted in the photos and stories from
years gone by.
Many of us have found out about current activities and
happenings we would not otherwise have known about.
Many of us have been provided with the opportunity to pray
over and/or send good wishes to fellow Bombers who are facing
health problems or other serious matters, or whose loved ones
are. And often this is how we first learn of the passing on
of fellow Bombers.
I know my life would be emptier without the Sandstorm and the
RichlandBombers.com website. I'll bet yours would, too.
We need to find a way to bring in more participation from
Bombers who graduated in the '70s, '80s, and '90s. I wonder
if there is a way to contact their reunion committees to be
able to put out a carefully crafted invitation to each person
on their email lists. They very likely don't even know what
they are missing.
Although many of our remembrances pre-date them, they are old
enough to start having interest in where/what they came from.
And they have stories of their own to share!
And because Maren suggests (wisely) that the depth and
breadth of her knowledge in all this be passed on to someone
in his/her 50s, that would be a graduate from late '70s or
early '80s.
This unique and beautiful treasure we share simply cannot be
allowed to fade away. That would be just too sad.
Thank you to the launchers of the Sandstorm and the website,
to those who have participated in maintaining the site (and
subsites), and of course to Queen Maren!
Bomber love,
-Lynn-Marie HATCHER Peashka ('68)

It in turn reminds me of all the same "boys life" adventures
back in those incomparable days. Which of course went on
throughout growing up with our buddies together, in our
respective and often overlapping "hoods." For example, back
home from school as a 20+ year old, roasting frog legs we
caught in the ponds, out there over the fire. When we moved
on from Richland for whatever reason the Bonds went along for
life. The way we all landed in Richland together in those
early years made it unique forever. And truly no less for all
who came later. Thank You, all my Mates sharing that enriched

Idaho is also issuing the "star" driver's license---anyone
wanting to fly, after 2020, will have to have that little
"star" on their license, or they will not be allowed to board
an airplane. My youngest daughter lives in CA and she will
also have to have her license updated, so that she can
continue flying up here to Idaho, for Christmas. My oldest
daughter and her husband, who live in Idaho, both have the
"star" on their driver's license, since they had to renew
them, this year---they had to take in documents proving
residency in the State of Idaho; birth certificate; SS card;
my daughter had to take in her marriage license, to prove her
last name, since last name on birth certificate was not the
same as what was on her license. I don't fully understand the
need for that "star", but it's government, so what can ya

This makes me think of another question to add to my list.
Will citizens who can't get that cute little "gold ball"

end up being branded in some way and forever looked at with
skepticism? Possibly not only rendered unable to fly, but
rendered unable to get a job or rent a place as well? This
is not a far-fetched possibility when you think about it and
what makes this Act something that wasn't well thought out
in my opinion and something to be concerned about.
I don't mind being inconvenienced by things that our

they are justified, but this Federal Act makes no sense in

Re: About the new US ID
Here in Missouri, if you have a Passport, you just take that
instead of the license without the star in 2020. Is that not
true in other states? Have not heard whether you can take a
passport to the drivers license bureau, instead of all of
that paraphernalia.

Re: I.D. requirements
Most, if not all, of the states that are not in compliance
with the federal ID requirements don't comply because they
have chosen to issue driver's licenses to people who are in
the US illegally. So if you live in one of those states,
your ordinary driver's license isn't accepted by the TSA.
Washington is one of those states, so I always carry my
passport when I fly, even on domestic flights, and have never
had a problem with TSA. I haven't shown them my driver's
license for years. If you don't already have a passport, they
don't cost a lot more than a driver's license, don't require
any kind of an exam, and are good for 10 years.

corner of Fitch and Cullum from about 1945 (before I was

and Douglas. I was at your house all the time, since your
little sister, Marcia DONAHUE Topping ('68), was my best

Cullum south of our first house (facing Cullum) was occupied
by your Aunt & Uncle's family, the Don Donahue family. Did
you live there before them?

Re: Class of 1954 reunion
Feel it's time for another update on our class reunion...
65 years since we graduated from Col-Hi in 1954. I have heard
from so many classmates that I am thankful for in regards to
putting a booklet together. Just hope if you can, you will
send me a note with your address, etc. and greeting. Even if
you are not joining Club 40 the weekend of September 6th and
7th, please come to our class reunion anyway! It will be held
on Saturday, September 7th for lunch from noon to 2-3 PM.
For those of you who I have heard from, who will not be
coming to Club 40 or lunch, I will send you a copy of our
booklet. Be sure I have your current address.
UPDATE OF WHAT HAS HAPPENED SO FAR:
Booklet is being worked on as I receive stories. I will need
something by the end of August. Cover page being worked up
and you will be surprised!! (and pleased, I hope) Souvenirs
have been ordered and received. (sorry, it's a surprise!)
You'll get one, even if not attending!
Location for lunch - I have made a reservation with a $50
deposit at Fiesta Mexican Restaurant in Richland on Gage
Blvd. (I am still checking on others, but had to hold this
one before it was too late. We only have 4 weeks) This is a
beautiful restaurant and they have American food also -
limited. Other places are asking for large deposits. Don't
feel we want to spend $500 for lunch!!
Activity at lunch - we will be free to wander around the
tables at lunch to visit. We will have a fun "frame" to take
our own "selfie" pictures with whomever we want! I plan to
make a fun centerpiece for each table. This room holds 50-60
and so far we are getting there! Will be a super time for
all!!
Group picture - Still have not hired a photographer, but will
talk to John Strege, who took our 60 year reunion picture.
This is a MUST to have! Your address is very important so
you can get a copy, even if not attending. It takes a couple
weeks. Door Prizes - plan to have!
Dessert - This will be something different than a cake or
two!! Mexican food is very filling, so want to leave room for
dessert!
This is special time for our get-together and am so thankful
that we are able to have so many attend. Can't promise our
70 year! We have lost 30 classmates since our 60 year!
A surprise phone call the other day informed me that a
classmate who has not been to Club 40 since our 60 year - 5
years ago --- is coming. Comment was "You have now been
warned" *LOL*
Guess who that would be!!! Thankful that Bob JOHNSON is able
to be here from New York!! So... this IS a special time!!
Again, please let me hear from you by e-mail, text or phone,
whatever is best for you, so I can pass your message on -
even if you can't attend.
SIDE NOTE: does anyone have information of the passing of
Ruth HAUGSE? Have heard that she is gone, but don't know when
or where she lived)
Club 40 pre-registration deadline is August 25th. NO TICKETS
SOLD AT THE DOOR. Thanks to Betti AVANT ('69) for mentioning
this in another Sandstorm. The Club 40 attendees list is not
totally up to date, but is being worked on. If you want to
know who is registered, feel free to call me. I have a
current list.
Excited... Excited!! Four weeks and 5 days to Club 40,
September 6th and 7th!! Stay safe and healthy and will see
many of you then. In case you've wondered... I have enjoyed
doing this!!
-Marilynn WORKING Highstreet ('54) ~ Enjoying baseball and
some real warm weather in the Tri-Cities! And Yay.. we
are getting a Del Taco in Richland!! Love that place.

Re: Pan Am Flight 6 ditching in the Pacific
I remember when this happened. October, 1956 I was 11 years
old and I remember the news stories and I remember it being
discussed in grade school. I remember one of the students
drawing the plane on a blackboard and pointing out which
engines went out. They were midway between Hawaii and San
Francisco when they lost two engines. The airplane could
still fly, but at reduced speed and not enough fuel to make
it to either San Francisco or back to Hawaii. There was a
Coast Guard cutter stationed in the area so the pilot flew
to the cutter's position and flew in circles until daylight.
The airplane ditched in the water and broke apart but all
passengers and crew were rescued by the Coast Guard Cutter.
Over the years I have thought about this from time to time;
probably even thought about it when Capt. Sullenberger landed
on the Hudson River. Don't know why I never looked it up
after I got internet. I have been watching "The History Guy"
on YouTube and his short videos and when I saw he had this
one I had to click on it and watch right away. A lot more
information than I ever knew.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqRAOvz71B0
There is also a video showing movie film taken on board the
Coast Guard cutter.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkR4F3_fEUQ
You will notice a difference in the flight numbers, 6 or 943.
The voices were probably added later as I doubt the Coast
Guard recorded the radio conversations. I researched this and
"flight 6" is correct; the "943" is the last three digits of
the tail number, which was "N90943".

Re: New Driver's Licenses
"Federal officials and out of state local law enforcement
agencies are not obligated to accept your driver's license
as a form of identification" is what "Federal Limits Apply"
stamped on your driver's license means. People will have to
weigh out the pros and cons of obtaining a passport instead
of a Real ID card.
When I first learned about the Federal Act, I was stunned and
sure that it would be repealed based on its illogical purpose
and implementation. After taking time to read through the Q
and As posted in the link that Maren attached to my first
post on August 2, I'm convinced more than ever that it needs
to be repealed so that no decent, law-abiding citizens become
adversely affected needlessly.
According to Maren's attached site, they want a birth
certificate with a seal. Mine doesn't have a seal, nor does
it look anything like modern day ones. What of older people
with certificates that don't cut the mustard. I hope the
memories talked about here aren't one day about the days we
were once able to fly.
Young people who live at home and people who use bill-pay
don't have utility bills. So what of them and what of the
bills anyway since people do move around? What of people who
get all of their mail at a P.O. Box?
What of women who didn't get custody of their marriage
license in a divorce or decided to burn it? In Texas they put
a woman's maiden name on their license as their middle name,
which may help. We'll see.
I look forward to hearing what the rest of you have to say
on this subject as we move toward the deadline over the next
year. What better place to gain information and different
perspectives on important things than a forum such as this.
Here's hoping that all of you are able to continue enjoying

Re: New Drivers License
To: Mary RAY Henslee ('61)
Yesterday I renewed my drivers license, got a new Real ID,
and passed the test with 100% correct answers.
When I arrived at the DMV, there was a line of people out the
door and inside was crammed with people sitting and waiting.
I asked the officer at the door where I should go BECAUSE I
HAD AN APPOINTMENT. he said, "Right here, young lady." There
was only one person in front of me. I had with me my current
drivers license, my passport, my social security card, a
utility bill, and a recent bank statement. The clerk reviewed
them and said I couldn't use the utility bill as ID because
it only had my husband's name on it. She substituted the
original letter of renewal that was sent to me as ID. I
then was directed to Window No. 9 where I filled out an
Application on the computer. YOU CAN DO THIS AHEAD OF TIME
ONLINE. I was given a number and was directed to another
window where I paid $36 (they DO NOT ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS;
DEBIT CARDS ARE OKAY.). I waited approximately 20 minutes
for my number to be called and I was directed to a computer
where I began the test. (The guy next to me was reading his
questions out loud so I put my ear plugs in that I always
carry in my purse.). There were only 18 questions and I
whizzed through them BECAUSE I PRACTICED THE TEST ONLINE
AND READ THE DMV MANUAL. They gave me an eye test and took my
picture, and I was DONE. I was never so relieved in my life!
THINGS WRITTEN IN ALL CAPS ARE IMPORTANT TO DO, ESPECIALLY
MAKING AN APPOINTMENT FIRST. I was done in about an hour and
fifteen minutes. People who didn't, had been there over two
hours.
BTW, I slept very well last night! Next time I have to do
this I will be almost 81 years old. Think I'll pass.

My mother, brother and myself flew on this very airplane,
"Sovereign of the Skies," a Boeing 377, from San Francisco to
Honolulu, Hawaii the day before this incident. It was an
uneventful flight. The Boeing 377 and C97 (military version

Re: Wild Rice Stuffing
I wonder if the phenomenal "wild rice stuffing" recipe that
your college roommate use to fix is the same as mine. The
following stuffing recipe is the one that I've been fixing
for Thanksgiving ever since the early 1960s.
WILD RICE STUFFING
Stuffing can be assembled a day ahead except for the raw
eggs. Mix in beaten raw eggs when ready to bake at mealtime.
Increase baking time by about 15 minutes if stuffing is baked
cold from the refrigerator (I always remove from the
refrigerator a little ahead of baking to remove some of the
chill). Cover with foil if top starts to brown.
Lightly grease a 12" x 8" x 2" baking dish. Set aside. Saute
1-1/2 cups chopped celery and 1 (8 ounce) package fresh
mushrooms (sliced and cut into small bite-size pieces) in 1/2
cup melted margarine until tender. While celery and mushrooms
are sauteing, cook 1 box of Uncle Ben's Seasoned Long Grain
and Wild Rice (regular long cooking, not quick cooking)
according to box directions.
Place 1 (8 ounce) package Pepperidge Farm Herb-Seasoned
Stuffing (crushed variety) into prepared baking dish. Moisten
with 1 cup chicken broth (can add a little more if needed).
Add sauteed mushrooms and celery, including margarine. Add 1
(2 ounce) jar chopped pimientos. Stir in cooked rice. Combine
with 2 slightly beaten eggs. Bake in a preheated 350 degree
oven for 20 to 25 minutes. Makes about 8 to 10 servings.
Doubled recipe can be baked in a 15" x 10" x 2" baking dish.

We just returned from a trip to Kansas to accompany our
granddaughter, Sydney JENKINS ('19), to her next adventure.
She will be attending Baker University in Baldwin City,
Kansas studying Exercise Science and Nutrition and playing
volleyball. She is considered a junior academically (thanks
to Running Start at CBC), a sophomore for something else, and
a freshman athletically. She obtained her personal trainer
certification this summer, and found out yesterday that the
coach wants her to coach a younger volleyball team at KU
(University of Kansas) this winter. KU is only 20 minutes
away in Lawrence, and where most go to get stuff since
Baldwin City is very small.
I wanted to see KU, so my daughter took me for a tour one
day. After seeing it, I fully understand why Sydney didn't
choose to go there! I remember what Ohio State was like and
this seemed even bigger! Also, the degree she's seeking isn't
certified at KU, but is at Baker.
We drove through Yellowstone on the way down as Sydney wanted
to take some photos of wildlife with her camera and big lens
that we gave her for graduation. We saw NOTHING! The geysers
were impressive and the scenery fantastic, but other than
some ducks and other birds it was a bust for animals. Of
course, we were on a time line and couldn't dawdle.
[last year there was a buffalo (bison?) that
crossed the road right in front of us. All
cars stopped and waited. -Maren}
After we left Sydney at Baker, we went up to South Dakota to
visit Mt. Rushmore which we had never seen. It was very
impressive, but since the Sturgis motorcycle gathering was
going on it was overly crowded and we chose to beat feet for
home rather than attempt more sightseeing in the area. The
bikers were considerate, but with an influx of about 100,000
people it was controlled chaos.
I'm really going to miss Sydney and soon her brother, Cameron
('16) will be leaving to go back to Jamestown, ND. He's been
playing baseball for the Highline Bears out of White Center
this summer and staying with his other grandmother in
Seabeck, so I haven't seen much of him. I think I miss my
grandkids more than I did my own kids, but that could just
be an illusion.
I will miss the Spudnut lunches with Sydney most of all.
We'll have to wait until Christmas break to do that again.

Re: My Eyes
Left eye cataract surgery in March went VERY well. Didn't
have an "Ah HA!" moment with the cataract surgery till June
-- 3 months after the surgery. I was playing Spider Solitaire
on my iPhone. I had no lens in either eye so I was going
back and forth to see which eye could see the numbers
better... it was literally 6" from my face! Anyway as I
blinked back and forth between the two eyes, I noticed that
the white around the card numbers was WHITE with the left eye
and distinctly YELLOW with the right eye. "AH HA!! Now I need
to get the right eye fixed
So after cataract surgery, Humana will pay for a new contact
lens and all recent eye doctors have said "Sclera lens".
Expensive ($650.00 + tax) but well worth it. The bonus is
that Humana paid $300 (max) toward the cost! YIPPIE SKIPPIE!
Got the new Sclera lens and have slowly been increasing the
daily wear time for the left eye. Sclera Lens is WONderful.
Thank you Bob LeCLAIR ('65) who told me his wife got Sclera
lenses and recommended them. I love it... it's comfortable,
won't just pop out if I look sideways too fast, and I can SEE
the computer screen... EASILY!

was the earliest opening! This guy is busy because he's
good! Name is Dr. Pulin Shah. He is a corneal transplant

in good hands with Dr. Shah.

Was rereading Maren's remarks on cataract surgery on 8/11. So
glad you are doing well. Didn't know you could wear contacts
after cataract surgery. I have never used contacts tho my
son does. Also glad your corneal transplant is doing well. A
guy at church has had that done on both eyes a few times.
I had cataract surgery on both eyes in January. It is
a huge change. I have worn glasses since 4th grade for
nearsightedness. [got my first glasses in 3rd grade. -Maren]
Now I see distance but not close up. I bought (or rather
medicare bought) new glasses hoping to avoid readers. Reading

close work -- mostly counted cross stitch. Will see the eye

that.

Today is one of those "good news/bad news" days in musical
history. This is the day Elvis died. Not gonna go into the

as the day Buddy Holly died.
The good news is that a fellow classmate was born on this
day, although several years before the previous events. And I
know he graduated the same time, as I saw him in the diploma
line ahead of me. Can't remember if he was in the group that
went to Yakima (following the ceremony) to see Jimmy Dorsey
and his band.

I just received this voicemail on my house phone, which I
don't answer because I get so many solicitation calls. I
checked the Social Security Administration website and
learned that it is a scam.
"This call is from the Department of Social Security
Administration. The reason you have received this phone call
from our department is to inform you we just suspended your
social security number because we found some suspicious
activity. So if you want to know about this case press 1.
Thank you."
The SSA website says that the Department never suspends a
social security number and almost never calls you unless
returning a call you initiated. Often the caller (if you
press 1) says there appears to be criminal activity and an
arrest warrant has been issued if you do not reply, and you
must give your social security number. Alternatively, because
of suspicious activity your bank account may be compromised,
but if you pay a fee your account will be protected.
Most of the solicitation calls I get are robocalls and if
the call goes to voicemail the computer hangs up rather than
leaves a message. I answer legitimate calls if the caller
leaves a message. The caller ID was 708-557-7315, but I did
not call back.
I'm going to try to make the '62 birthday party next month,
rather than the Club 40 meeting. I can't afford to stay a
week. Maybe next year for Club 40; I am going to send in my
dues.
I have an appointment after I get back from the birthday
party to have a quadruple heart bypass operation. It's a
toss-up whether it will be of any benefit; my cardiologist
said even with two arteries 100% blocked and the other two
80% blocked, my heart is functioning normally, and I don't
have any symptoms like chest pains or shortness of breath, so
corollary arteries are filling in for the blocked ones.

Re: School Supply Shopping
About 10 days ago, I did something super fun: school
supply shopping with my 4 year old grandson. ($60+ for a
preschooler!). It brought back some favorite childhood
memories, and will be a tradition we'll continue together
from here on out. (And with his little sister when she starts
school ... and any other little ones who come along in the
future).
Nowadays you get an email from the teacher/school a month or
so in advance, listing everything the kiddo needs.
But I remember when we used to go into elementary school on
the first day, walk down the hall of whatever grade we were
starting, and look for our name on the list taped to the
teacher's door. That's how we found out who to whom we'd be
academically accountable for the next 9 months. And that's
the day we got our school supply list.
Right after school, the drug stores and Newberry's would be
overrun with Moms (usually) and kids getting #2 pencils,
crayons, pink erasers, etc. I LOVED that shopping trip.
(Remember using old Roi-Tan cigar boxes as pencil boxes)?
It's done differently now, but my little guy and I had a
blast together, checking off the items on the list (albeit
on my iPhone, not on a piece of paper). He picked out his
own backpack (Super Heroes), which color Kleenex box, etc.
We consulted together on the merits of various choices. Dang,
I honestly don't know who had more fun!
Please tell your memories of school supply shopping back in
the day! Fun!!
-Lynn-Marie HATCHER Peashka ('68)
P.S. Last year, Richland School District started
providing all elementary kids with all required school
supplies except backpacks and ear buds. This year, they
have expanded the program to include all middle school
kids. So everyone starts off with the same set of "tools".

Re: Lynn-Marie HATCHER Peashka ('68) School Supplies post
I do not recall ever loading up with school supplies as a
kid... except for new shoes (feet out grew the ones I did not
wear all summer). Most of my elementary school occurred in
California during WWII... went to school from 8 am till noon,
then the afternoon group came in. We were furnished about
everything we needed by the school. Things I recall were the
very poor quality pulp paper, (an ugly shade of brown) a
pink pearl eraser (had to pay a nickel if you lost it to
get another), a Number 2 pencil???? They were the most often
used still only number 2? also a pencil with soft lead (it
smeared)... it was also a bit thicker than regular pencils.
we each were issued a pad of lined paper that was used for
home work and spelling tests. It was 3rd grade before we got
the narrow lined paper, before then it was wide spaced lines.
Christmas time was when we seemed to get most of our new
clothing. The start of the new year was always exciting for
the girls to show off new dresses, or coats, shoes, etc. Boys
it was to show off new sports gear or cap pistols. Different
times, different memories yet always the same.

had the drawing board behind me said, "Well Dennis, this will
be remembered as the day Elvis Presley died."
We had recently gotten back from a three-week trip to Iowa
and Missouri. Took my wife, her mother and three nieces. I
told everyone they were limited to one suitcase each. We all
brought out our empty suitcases and I fitted them in the
trunk, then made a diagram of how they fit. This was a 1963
Oldsmobile and the trunk had this oblong shaped well in it so
you could stand the suitcases in upright. Then when the day
to load up and leave those females started bringing stuff
like makeup cases and blow dryers and I didn't now how this
was going to work, but I got it all in the trunk, and the
seats were wide enough for six people to ride comfortably. We
would not be able to do that with the cars we have now. And
they wonder why people buy these SUVs.
Re: Sprinklers
I have two controllers for my sprinklers, one in the house
for the front yard, and one in the shop for the back yard.
I had to replace the one in the house. To replace it with
one just like it would cost something like $171 at Amazon.
Home Depot had a different brand, the Orbit Easy Dial, for
something like $22, so I went out and got one. First thing I
was amazed by how small the box was. This one is smaller than
the other one and only sticks out from the wall just over 1
inch whereas the old one stuck out 3 1/2 inches. It is much
easier and simpler to program and has features the other did
not have, like a rain delay you can delay it coming on for
1, 2, or 3 days. Last night I turned the old one off for the
back yard so I could mow the lawn in the morning, then had
trouble starting it on manual after I finished. I guess if
I messed with it more often, it wouldn't be a problem, but
after eight years of not getting it right I just might change
the back one also because I like the new one so much better.
The front one was for 4 stations, but the back yard will need
one for 6 stations and Home Depot doesn't stock that model (I
think you can order it), but Lowes does. They both look
exactly alike.

Ann. She was three and I was two when we moved next door to
each other on Potter. We have remained best friends for 70
years and yes, we know ALL the secrets! What a beautiful
world our friendship has "birthed." Love you to the moon

And, tomorrow is her charming husband, Gary's ('64) birthday.
Rest assured they both can still manage a two-day party! Many

There is a younger Bomber Babe who will be attending the

beforehand is the basic rational for this entry. I was aware
of her during my senior year. Especially since she danced
with Wayne MOSS ('54) at the Tolo Dance. Pretty sure he

Re: Gmail put the 7/18 Sandstorm in their SPAM folder - AGAIN
Been looking for a possible solution to this problem. Gmail
has done it twice in the last 3 days and it's getting
frustrating. So, I THINK there MAY BE be another solution,
but I'm not sure how to do it.
Steve, from NetAtlantic said this in a recent email to me
about all of this:
"Gmail puts the onus of their subscribers to make
their own decision as to whether or not mail
should be filtered to the inbox or not - a lot
of that is based on engagement which is someone
opening an email and/or clicking on a link within
an email. Your mailings will never show any
engagement statistics because opens are based on
image tracking and you don't send out an html
version so there are no images to track. You
would definitely benefit from sending both an
html and text version of your mail."
So, I just told Steve that I prepare an .html version of the
SS daily and put it online at http://AlumniSandstorm.com --
but also said that I've been emailing a plain text version
of the Sandstorm for 21 years. I'm hoping he'll help me get
started sending the html version. Will I be able to get
started this week and see how it goes?
Everyone will let me know if this creates any kind of
problem.

Re: '64 Reunion (next month)
I tossed this post around in my head for a few weeks,
wondering if it was necessary. Finally decided it's worth
posting.
In less than one month, the Class of '64 will gather in
Richland for yet another of our beloved reunions, this one
the 55th anniversary. American society is full of impassioned
beliefs these days, with opposing political sides raised to a
fever pitch. Our class is no exception. Sometimes we have
clashed with other classmates on Facebook. I am guilty of
doing so, usually to my regret when a cooler head prevailed
later. In September we will come together to celebrate that
wonderful thing that unites us, far above politics: that we
are all Bombers, and call Richland our childhood home with
gratitude. I propose that we make this upcoming reunion a
politics-free zone for the weekend, and celebrate what we
have in common, keeping private those differences that have
sprung up over the years.

Re: Class of 1969 Reunion
From our WELL, THAT WAS FUN DEPT.:
1969 (MCMLXIX) was a common year starting on Wednesday of the
Gregorian calendar, the 1969th year of the Common Era (CE)
and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 969th year of the 2nd
millennium, the 69th year of the 20th century, and the 10th
and last year of the 1960s decade.
Fifty years ago Jeff Low, Mark Hutton (RIP to both) formed a
little band called, ironically, The Dirge and played with
shaky knees and sweaty palms for a mixer in the Girl's Gym
after a basketball game. Last weekend, I did that again for
many of the same folks. Such an honor to be asked to perform
at this event and I cannot express how appreciative I am at
the warmth and kindness shown by all of you towards my WeedZ
band mates who knew exactly no one in a crowd who knew
everyone.
Wow. Fifty years. I think we all knew it would happen some
day, but how did it get here so quickly? It seems like just
yesterday I was climbing off a Northern Pacific Railroad
passenger car (with a Vista Dome) in Livingston, MT to work
the summer in Yellowstone Park. What an incredible year that
was. The first men landed on the moon while I was there. In
upstate New York half a million hippies wallowed in a muddy
cow pasture to see what have become legendary performances by
some of best musical acts of the day for a weekend of peace
and love beads. The Beatles had their picture taken while
walking across the street at Abby Road and played their
last public performance together on the rooftop of their
London studio. Richard Nixon was beginning his first term as
the 37th president and the 34th, Dwight Eisenhower was laid
to rest. John married Yoko in Gibraltar and had the famous
"bed-in" in Amsterdam. Young men celebrating their 19th
birthday on September 14 that year will soon find that to be
the first date selected in the new U.S. draft lottery on
December 1. Willie Mays hit his 600th career home run, the
Mets beat the Orioles four games to one in one of the biggest
upsets in World Series history, what would become the
Internet took it first baby steps and the Boeing 747 jumbo
jet made its first flight. What an incredible time to take
our first strides into adulthood.
Fifty years ago we walked down the aisle in the steaming
Bomber Gym to receive our diplomas with our whole lives ahead
of us. College, military service, marriage, raising a family,
career... all were still in the future and the possibilities
were seemingly endless. This past weekend, the group that
gathered had all of that pretty much in the rear view mirror.
Been there, done that. And this was the first reunion for the
class of '69 where that was the case. The joy at being able
to spend time, even if only a few minutes, visiting with each
other after all these years was evident. Turns out, we're
all pretty damn good people who shared a somewhat unique
childhood and have things in common that those who did not
grow up in Richland will never truly understand. But we
certainly do, and we really love each other because of it.
And huge thank-yous are in order to the group of hard working
classmates who organized this undertaking and made it a
reality. Duke, Chris, Jerry, Ben, Roy, Dave, Bob, Charlie,
Mike, Greg, Nancy and everybody else on the committee, what a
hell of a great job you all did. This thing took the better
part of a year to put together and I cannot thank you enough
for the happiness that was the ultimate result of your
efforts. And of course, Tom ALBERT, what can you say? His
leadership, attention to detail and tireless spirit made it
all come together. So thank you from the bottom of my heart
Tom.
It was so good seeing all of you again. I was thinking about
the incredible last few days on my way home yesterday and I
felt a bit of sadness as I realized that some of the folks
I saw this weekend at The Gaslight (sorry - it's still The
Gaslight) and at Roy's Garage, some I hadn't seen in fifty
years, I will never see again. Just won't happen. So I am
trying to appreciate the moments I spent with each of you as
precious, to be cherished and not taken for granted. Though
our paths may never cross again, the warmth I feel for every
one of you is real and will be a part of me till my last day
on this Earth.

Re: Jeff CURTIS ('69) 8/21/19 Sandstorm entry
I finished reading Jeff CURTIS' ('69) entry in yesterday's
Sandstorm with my jaw dropped. The man is a poet! Some of his
phrases about growing older and the nature of RHS reunions
left me shaking my head in admiration. And they reflected so
accurately my own thoughts about reunions and growing older.
He said at one point in discussing the Class of '69's 50-year
reunion "Wow. Fifty years . . .How did it get here so
quickly?" Exactly how I've been feeling lately. Several years
ago one of my '64 classmates sent [my wife] Sherrie and me a
Christmas card which contained the handwritten words, "I
can't believe we're 70!" From the vantage point of 73, it all
seems to have come so fast. Sometimes I want to scream, "Wait
a minute! I'm not ready to be 73! Can we get a do-over?" It
made me recall the words in a short story I read years ago in
which the main character ages considerably, and the author
writes, "Years passed over her head, long in the living and
short in the looking back". You young Bombers, wring every
last drop of life out of your years; 70 will be here
shockingly soon.
I really enjoyed Jeff's recitation of what happened in 1969.
Well written. And I'm awed by his writing, "Turns out we're
all pretty damn good people who shared a somewhat unique
childhood and have things in common that those who did not
grow up in Richland will never truly understand." So right
on! Because of the long-term stability of Hanford employment
and because Richland was such an agreeable place to live,
many of us were in school together from kindergarten through
high school graduation. Thus life-long friendships were born.
I'm betting that's not altogether common in other towns.
Jeff also poignantly reminded us that at our age, some of the
people we see at reunions we will greet for the last time.
All the more reason to cherish the upcoming 55-year reunion
for my class, 1964. Jeff, your words were worth repeating,
and from one writer to another I salute you.

This turns out to be NOT a very good time to bring my friend
Terry SHEGRUD (he says '54, '55, and '56) to Alaska! Several
huge wild fires have smoked up the air something fierce. I
finally went to a doctor today (to the tune of $245 plus $24
for meds!) He prescribed a nasal spray and Zyrtec. My head is
very stuffed up. The good news is that my lungs are okay. We
got here late Saturday evening and will leave next Monday.
Short visit but it is all we can do for this year. Of course
it is a delight to get to see my eldest daughter and some of
the Grands and Great-grands but I haven't seen all of them
yet. We've seen some of my good "old time" friends and one
was delighted to know that she and Terry have friends in
common. (Small world!)
We stopped by my old place and I got to love on 2 of the
horses and explain to Terry a little bit about the property
history and the buildings, etc. Yesterday we went to the Musk
Ox Farm in Palmer and today we drove south to Girdwood and
the Alyeska ski resort. Didn't take the tram up the mountain
because of the smoke. I had thought we would take the train
from Anchorage to Palmer for the Palmer State Fair, which
opened today. Kind of forgot about that. Maybe tomorrow. My
car had a broken coil spring which sliced the tire on the
front driver's side. We are using a rental for now. I was
told I could have my car back today but I didn't hear any
more about it. Of course they found some other stuff that
"should be taken care of"... so the total will be $1700 plus
a new tire. Yikes. Cars are expensive but I need one up
here as well as the one at home. I haven't seen all of my
grandkids and great-grands yet and hope fervently that I will
get to see them before we have to go home. Next year is a
long way off and kids grow and change so much in a year.
Looking forward to the Friday and Saturday of Club 40!

My 8/22 Alumni Sandstorm ended up in my peoplepc.com junk
email folder. This is only the second time it happened, so I
decided to investigate.
My junk email folder is one I created. Emails go into it if
they have certain words in the subject line or in the body of
the email. The word that sent both Sandstorms to this folder
was "shocking." I don't feel comfortable asking people who
submit entries to avoid using that word, so I deleted it from
the list of banned words. I do look at the senders' names and
subject lines in the junk email folder before I empty the
folder in case something slips through.
I have Norton antivirus. It detects a great deal of spam and
prefixes the subject line with [Norton AntiSpam], so I send
all those directly to the 'deleted' folder.

Re: Bent Noses
Had been in Vietnam long enough to know it was not some place
I wanted to stay... don't think I ever told you this story.
We were in the rear in our CP area for rest, and a refitting.
I had seen the ring that had been put up since we were there
last, and something told me it would be trouble. One morning
the first shirt came up to me and said, "Can you fight?" I
said "Who you?" He said "No dopey, we're going to have a
"smoker" and we need some boxers." I saw trouble, and said,
"I have the ring time of a gnat, why me?" He said cause I am
having trouble getting volunteers, which made sense to me. He
said "We'll match up guys by weight and experience." Yeah
right. Fight day came, the crowd had been drinking "tiger
piss" since sun up, and it was about 95* Saw a few guys who I
had never seen before shadow boxing, and trying to look like
Cassius Clay. My name was called, and as I got in the ring I
looked over at this skinny black kid with the same "what am I
doing here" look as I had on his face. The bell rang, and
most of the rest is a blur. This skinny black kid who I
outweighed by at least 15-20 pounds was beating me like a
drum. I was trying to cover up, and maybe look for a hole
towards his nose, and all I could see was "everlast" on the
wrist part of the gloves. Short story is: 3 three minute
rounds lasted about a month. After it was over and I was
sipping a beer, the first shirt came up to me,and said, "No
shit, you were terrible out there." I said "F**k you!" in a
low voice, and licked my wounds, and my lost pride. Next time
a couple months later, mostly the same story, and most of the
guys didn't want a repeat. First shirt says to me "You have
experience now, right, Marine?" Got in the ring again,
looking at this skinny white cracker from N. Carolina, and I
thought, how bad can this be... it was worse than the first
time. He was much quicker, and had lied when he said he had
no ring experience. Beat me like a drum. But a few months
later I got even. We got in to it over something dumb, and he
called me out. This time I hit him as soon as we walked
outside, and I never let him catch up. Threw everything I
could think of, and enough landed. After a couple minutes, a
couple other Marines pulled us apart, and he had had enough.
The guys name was Paul Joye, and we became good friends.
Wasn't long until we moved toward the DMZ, and no more sign
of a boxing ring. Lucky for me.

Re: Learning to box
So, Gene HORNE ('57) is having a birthday today [8/23]...
Ah Gene, I remember ye well. Those winter evenings in the
Christ The King basement under your watchful eye, wearing
boxing gloves and sweatslippery headgear and paired off
against a much quicker and more muscular Tommy HEMPHILL
('62), as I shuffled and jabbed and flinched and blocked and
punched and missed and punched and hit, and then GOT hit--
really hard, right in my snout--and then stood over in the
corner gasping for breath while you wiped the blood off my
snout with a towel you'd brought along for that very purpose
and kept draped over one of the top ropes for whenever you
might need it. Mine was not the only blood on that towel,
and I remember I always jerked away from the crusty feel of
it when you wiped it across my nose and upper lip. Lordy...
I can feel it, even now.
I think one of the reasons I got pretty good pretty quick
back then was because I couldn't stand your nastya*ss towel.
Shame on you, Gene. You lied to me and you lied to my mother
when you promised us my nose would not get bent, because it
GOT bent and it HURT getting it bent, and you'd told me I
wouldn't get hurt, either.
So that's two lies, right off the bat.
But this letter is supposed to be celebratory in nature, so
I'll stop with the reprimands---
Except to remind you of this one last lie you told:
I got my nose broken for me--really broken--in the Spokane
Golden Gloves finals in 1965. I'd won the battle but lost the
war, so to speak. I looked a lot worse than the guy I beat.
My nose was swollen double its normal size and made a slight
clicking sound when I prodded it with my forefinger. We were
in the locker room and I was sitting on a bench, still in my
boxing trunks, and you were cutting off my handwraps with a
pair of scissors.
"Hey Gene," I said.
"What?" you muttered. You were bent over my hands and
snipping with the scissors.
"It's broken, isn't it?"
"What is?" You kept snipping.
"My nose, dammit. My nose is broken." You didn't answer.
"Isn't it?" I insisted. "My damn nose is broken." You stood
up and tossed the wad of used handwraps over into the
trashcan. Then you looked at me.
"Is my nose broken?"
You waited a long moment before you answered.
"No. No, it's not broken. It's puffed up pretty bad, but
that'll go down in a couple days. Now... you're gonna have a
couple black eyes because of getting poked in the snout the
way you did, but those'll go away in about a week. So... now,
go take a shower. We gotta go out and pick up your trophy."
"So my nose is NOT broken?" I just wanted to hear you say it
one more time.
"No, your nose isn't broken."
Dear Gene HORNE, wherever you are...
It is 55 years since that night in Spokane, and it's your
birthday and I'm standing here in front of my mirror and
wishing you a happy one and thanking you for the many
wonderful times we shared together.
And I mean that.
But Gene...
That thing you told me about my nose not being broken...
That was a lie.
But thank you for not telling me the truth at the time.

Happy Birthday Gene HORNE ('57). Lots of great memories of
those days in the Christ The King basement, and a few black
eyes as well.
Sorry about your nose Terry DAVIS Knox ('65). However, I
think you owe me some royalties for helping fix your face to
look like a tough guy for the movies.
Not only did Gene HORNE teach us how to box, he taught us
some other valuable life lessons as well. I recall talks we
had where Gene advised us to do our fighting in the ring, not
out on the street. I kinda got that message. He told us to
avoid street fights and just walk away, however if we were
backed into a corner and were forced to defend ourselves,
deliver the first punch, make it count and walk (or run)
away. That was a good lesson for me. The other lesson was to
be confident and defuse the situation. That worked as well
until the third or fourth beer, then wisdom was replaced by
some other stupid emotion.
Gene, you were a great teacher and inspiration. Thanks for
the wisdom and guidance.

Re: Roberdeau Playground
I don't remember the "B" house on Symons where we lived when
I was born in 1945. We moved to 1205 Perkins just before Tere
('65) was born in 1947. I was told that next door neighbor,
Mrs. Williamson, looked after Tim ('62) and me when Mom went
to the hospital to get Tere.
The playground was right across the street from 1205. Other
moms would occasionally bring their kids to that playground
and they would visit with Mom while the kids played. If it
was late in the afternoon, our front yard would be shaded by
our two story "L" house and Mom (and whoever else) would sit
in lawn chairs in the front yard and watch the kids play. Mom
told one mother "Don't watch them play. If they get hurt,
they'll come over here."
And they did.
When I was little the playground consisted of a sandbox (I
never remember any sand in it), three teeter totters, 7
swings, a slide, and a basketball hoop... all with just dirt
under each one...
Back when bread wrappers were wax paper you could get that
slide really slick with one of those bread wrappers -- and
slide down super fast!
One summer somebody (bet we'll never know who) decided it
would be a good idea to put black top under the play
equipment. Kids would fall and crack their heads... head
wounds bleed A LOT! "The summer of the black top" brought
MANY bleeding heads to our door. When they'd get hurt, they'd
make a bee line for 1205. I must have been a teen ager by
then because I seemed to be the one who administered first
aid to all the bleeding heads... seemed like there were a
lot of them.
They have new fangled play equipment now... gone are the
swings, teeter totters, slide, sandbox, and the basketball
hoop... I THINK there's even a brown (with yellow letters)
"Roberdeau Playground" sign... and there's a small area for
parking now, too.
Bomber cheers,

Re: 2020 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race
http://www.iditarod.com/ - Official Iditarod Site
192 days till the official start on Saturday, March 7, 2020!
Jim Lanier, 77, was denied entry in the 2020 Iditarod. He
said by phone that the Iditarod told him he won't be able to
race because of his "recent scratches from the Iditarod",
along with "feedback from the Yukon Quest" following Lanier's
most recent finish in that race.
I'm thinking if he paid the $4,000 entry fee, what does
scratching in previous years have to do with the price of
apples in Florida?
Re: Cost to race in the Iditarod
Entry Fee in 2019: $4,000 per musher.
Travel Costs: $1,500. The Iditarod requires the musher to
pay for flying their dogs home from the finish line in Nome,
Alaska, along with themselves, at least one handler, and all
the gear.
Pre-race Vet Checks: $350. This covers travel costs to and
from the mandatory vet check. The Iditarod also requires a
deposit at a vet clinic prior to the race in case a dog
dropped during the race needs special care.
Misc. Expenses the week before and the week after the race:
$1,500. There is a LOT to get done immediately before the
race that requires being near the race's starting line, so
much of this expense is estimated food and lodging costs
away from home. At the finish line, the race offers host
facilities, but other lodging is available and sometimes
necessary. Most meals must be purchased in Nome where the
race finishes, a remote town where food is expensive. One
commonly overlooked expense is the purchase of sky kennels,
which are used to ship the dogs home and usually cost
upwards of $75 each.
Handler Costs: $500. Costs can fluctuate depending on the
handler's needs and his or her home base.
Dog Booties: $1,800. These are estimates based on bootie
prices and can vary based on the number of dogs used and how
long they are used during the race.
Dog Food: $2,400. These figures can vary depending on the
type of dog food, the amount of time on the trail, and the
number of dogs used in each race. The Iditarod does not
return unused dog food from the checkpoints, and since they
require a 60 pound minimum per drop bag, that can lead to an
unfortunate amount of wasted food. Each musher will ship out
between 1,200 and 1,800 pounds of dog food, which averaged
out to about $1.00 per pound. On top of the food bill is the
cost to ship it out, also $1.00 per pound.
Sled Maintenance Costs: $1,000. This primarily covers cost of
plastic for the sled runners (ship out 8 rolls of plastic at
$50 per set) and spare parts, plus the cost of sending spare
(often lighter) sleds to checkpoints later in the race. This
does not include the cost of the sleds themselves (should you
buy them ready made or buy parts with which to make them).
Musher Food: $250. This covers the food sent out in the
musher's drop bag to refuel themselves when they resupply at
each checkpoint.
Musher's Personal Items: $500. This amount can vary
considerably, but this estimate covers many basic drop bag
items like socks, batteries for headlamps, toiletries, hand
and foot warmers, etc.
Other Equipment & Gear: $8,000. These estimates include a
wide variety of things, like: ganglines, harnesses, the sleds
themselves (each musher ideally has two for use during the
race) sled bags, mandatory gear required by the race (cooker,
ax, sleeping bag, showshoes, etc), snow hooks, ski poles,
dog coats, dog leg protectors, vaccines, medications, and
supplements, cooler, dog bowls, food dipper, and therapeutic
shoulder coats for the dogs. Gear for the musher includes
long underwear, jackets, fur hood ruff, Anorak suits, gloves,
mittens, neck gators, boots, headlamps, goggles, hats, and
more. Many of these items are purchased periodically and not
annually.
Well who knew the Iditarod could cost that much?
Bomber cheers,

the humidity to actual temps.
I married in August (years ago) and moved to Mississippi.
What a change! When we lived in MS I used to tell my family
we had two seasons -- summer and not summer! (The latter was
much shorter). My husband used to have 3 gardens a year --
cool (relatively speaking) crops, warm weather crops and
then cool crops again. My first xmas in MS we had no winter.
Sat outside xmas morning in short sleeves. And it was only
the two of us. (I had 2 brothers and 2 sisters). After that
year we gathered up some folks who didn't have family so we
had more warm bodies. Better.

Just wanted to say "thank you" for always putting a smile on
my face with your Sandstorm entries. I especially love your
tag lines, such as: "gather the eggs early or they will be
hard boiled before we get them in the house!" Don't know
where you come up with those; they are priceless!

Have a wonderful day you two. We so enjoy having you near us.
Bill's gourmet cooking is an added bonus, as is your quilting

Jackie, beating them is too easy. Thanks for always being
there for us.
Love you, your siblings and spouses.

For the first time since we moved back to Richland in 2004,
I do not have a Richland school year calendar on my wall.
My grandkids are now both -- Cameron ('16) & Sydney ('19) --
in their respective colleges, so I don't need to know what
days they have school or what the vacation days are. It just
doesn't seem quite right. With both so far away, Cameron in
Jamestown, North Dakota and Sydney in Baldwin City, Kansas
they won't be dropping by to take me to lunch at the Spudnut
Shoppe until Christmas time. I'm really going to miss them.
It's like when my own kids left home and we became empty
nesters.
I am so ready for college football to start! My Ohio State
Buckeyes play on Saturday at 9am and Washington plays at
Noon. Should be a great day!

Re: Gmail
For years my Sandstorm has been coming to my primary email
via Gmail. For some reason my primary email was never
accepted (pama@hirst.com). Maren asked me to use a Gmail
account and told me how to have the Sandstorm bounced from
Gmail to my @hirst account. Now, ever since the last go round
with Sandstorms being placed in Gmail spam they are never
rerouted. No matter how many times I mark the Sandstorm Not
Spam in Gmail, they are still going straight to Spam and not
getting rerouted. Sorry for my whine. Maren, maybe you could
try my @hirst email again?

Looking at the calendar, doesn't seem like there's much of
August left. Which mean September is just around the corner.
And, with that being the case, the Club 40 Annual Meeting
isn't too far off, nor is the Big '54 Lunch. Hey, that would
mean that Oktoberfest will follow the week later. Should be a
good first two weeks, weather permitting.
On top of all the above fol-de-rol, there is one of the young
Bomber Babes of my acquaintance celebrating a birthday today.
I think I must kindly acknowledge that fact as who knows what
the "Tooter" ('65) may or may not add.
So a flourish of the ol' propeller beanie and a "Happy
Birthday!" are in order for Kathy HOFF ('64). I will not
mention, at this time, her age. Although I do believe she has
reached the level where she is allowed in adult drinking
establishments.

we are awaiting the end of The State Fair so that
autumn weather may begin to make an appearance.

I have truly enjoyed the entries that I've read so far.
Writing for the Tri-City Herald is what you need to be doing.
The paper would be fortunate to have a columnist able to
bring Richland's past to life with the authenticity and flair
that it takes to capture a broad audience.

Re: The Tri-City Herald of Yesteryears
The newspaper seemed to consider most everything that we did
as kids important enough to make their pages back when I was
growing up. Where else would I have gotten my picture in the
paper for just having an after-school job? Where else would
kids get their picture in the paper for just hanging out
together?
Attached are three newspaper clippings from my collection:
Pic (1) shows Johanna GOODNER ('60), Sharon TATE ('61wb-RIP),
Darlene MANNING ('60), and Vicki FITZGERALD ('61) hanging out
together during their 1959 summer vacation. Check-out the
decor.

Pic (2) is a collage showing Richland's 1958-59 high school
cheerleading squad: Kit BRIDGES ('59), Sandy KROSS ('59),
Barbara STANFIELD ('60), Ernie TRUJILLO ('59), and Vonnie
Reed ('60) and that of other towns in our district.

Pic (3) shows me working in the bakery at Campbell's shortly
before graduation. I'm yet to find an in-store bakery with as
wide an assortment of goodies as Campbell's offered.

Trying to open the flash flood link resulted in a warning
"this type of file (.swf) could harm your computer," and then
it was not able to open the video file when I continued
because I trust you.
[Two things to know:
1. I check EVERY link BEFORE I publish, and
2. On this link I got a "run adobe flash"
clicked "allow" and it opened right up. -Maren]
