Dear dear Maren! Rolls down 5 steps, head over heels! and
STILL GETS THE SANDSTORM OUT!!!! What a woman!! But Maren,
wasn't it worth the roll over down the steps to get SIXTEEN
Bombers to write in to the Sandstorm the next day??!! Even I
was getting a little weary of the early info on the Alaska
Iditarod and you have really turned me into a fan to it!
Sincerely Maren, prayers for fast healing and needed rest.

Still taking ibuprofen, resting and taking it easy. Back is

Thanks for all the well-wishes... I'm doing better and better

Oh my goodness! I just now read about your tumble. It's such
good news that you didn't get seriously hurt. Hopefully, by
today you're not as sore as you were yesterday. Your fall
serves as a good reminder to all of us to be more careful.
None of us are "spring chickens" any more. The older I get,
the worse my balance gets; and falling is a real worry for
me. Winter can be very treacherous for us old farts with
slipping on snow or ice being a real possibility. Let's hope
for no more falling calamities for any of us!

Re: Yep, we are grateful to be alive
RE: Falls
With the litany of fall descriptions prompted by Maren's fall
(and I'm grateful that most of them are doing OK at least),
I'm reminded of falls I've had.
One of the dumbest was following three days in a coma after
a seizure. I needed to use the restroom, my patent sitter
(my wife, Pam ['66)) was snoozing. I didn't know I wasn't
supposed to get out of bed by myself. I only made it about
halfway from the hospital bed to the toilet and was roundly
remonstrated by both Pam and the nursing staff.
Another of the dumbest (perhaps the dumbest of all of mine):
I was trying to move a 2,000 pound pallet towards the back of
the delivery truck so I could get the forklift to reach it. I
landed on using a hand truck to get under a corner and kinda
twisting the pallet a couple of inches. I had to put all
available force to lift even a little. Back and forth, back
and forth... I was near the end of the truck's bed when the
hand truck popped out of the corner and I went flying
backwards head first. There must have been an angel there.
Somehow I landed on my hands and knees.
But we're all getting OLDER but how do we know when we have
arrived at OLD?
Well, there is an easy test: PRETEND to fall down. If
bystanders just laugh, you haven't arrived yet. If they come
running, you're there.

Re: Apple Cup
Well... that happened... AGAIN! Last year I compared we
Cougs to Charlie Brown for our endless faith that this would
definitely be the year that we kick that football and yet,
Lucy got us again. Time to do some rationalizing...
Upon further review, I'm not so sure being Charlie Brown is
such a bad thing. Despite the obvious self-esteem issues and
the occasional nickel spent for psychiatric care, Charlie did
pretty well. He had lots of close friends who cared about
him, a loyal dog, caring teachers, and generally a very good
life that he didn't (or couldn't) always acknowledge.
Charlie no doubt grew up to have a successful career,
probably a middle manager at a multinational corporation,
and is now happily retired with a loving wife and kids plus
a large, supportive network of friends who can be counted on
to support him during tough times.
So, yeah, being Charlie Brown isn't so bad... now please
excuse me while I curl up with my Butch T Cougar stuffed toy
and continue weeping softly to myself...

>>From: Gary BREHM ('64 Lion/Honorary Bomber)
To: All Bombers and Friends
After losing Marsha GOSLIN Brehm ('65-RIP) last year to
brain cancer (Glioblastoma), I thought being made an
"Honorary Bomber" I wanted to let everyone know of a
situation I just went through over the Thanksgiving holiday.
I left home on Tuesday morning and flew to Los Angeles to
spend Thanksgiving with my sister and family.
That night I had gone to bed and at 10:30 received a phone
call from my son in Spokane telling me his fiancé (she had
had a bad fall in the shower two weeks prior) had passed
away. She had just turned 40 on November 1st and she spent
two weeks in bed or on the couch from her injuries. Her fall
left her with an injured knee and fracture of the tailbone.
My son took her in for a scheduled CT scan and it showed
the seriousness of her injuries. He took her home after the
tests and 10 minutes after getting there she started to have
breathing difficulties. My son didn't know if it was a heart
thing or maybe a reaction to the Dilaudid they gave her in
the ER. An ambulance was called and they prepared her to be
transported and she began to show signs of the breathing
difficulties. They began CPR in the ambulance. By the time
or shortly after arriving at the ER, she was pronounced dead
after considerable work to revive her.
She had just turned 40 November 1st and died from a blood
clot that broke loose from the knee injury and went to her
heart. She died in the ambulance of a heart attack.
I had flown to Los Angeles to spend Thanksgiving with my
sister and family, but got a call at 10:30 that night and so
20 hours after arriving in L.A. I flew out for Spokane to
be with my son. Before I left on Saturday to come home to
Richland, they got the autopsy results and it was indeed the
blood clot (from her knee injury) that had gone to her
heart and was fatal.
It's snowing here in the Tri-Cities and in the 20s. I
decided to write this to all Sandstorm readers as most of
us are now at an age where falling can become part of our
everyday life. I want to tell everyone to please be careful
and if you do fall be sure to be checked out by a doctor that
can identify any possible injuries. My son's fiancé had seen
three different docs and they all failed to diagnose her
injuries and were very reluctant in prescribing any pain
medication. I guess she was in severe pain at times until the
evening she passed away. If any of us who are of older age
now, we need to be aware of this type of injuries that can
occur and be fatal. Please be careful and if you do have a
fall, be checked out and tests run to make sure there is no
injury that could cause fatal problems like my son just went
through with his fiancé!!
Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays, which ever you prefer. I
will be spending Christmas in Vancouver, WA and Spokane with
my daughter and her family and then my son, who is alone like
his Dad (me) at this holiday season. This year is a little
easier for me since it's been 14 months since Marsha passed
away, but you never really completely put your loss of a mate
to the side, close to the holidays especially. All Bombers
and friends in the area and around the world wherever you
may be since graduating many years ago. If you're in a
warm climate, you're lucky as it's been cold here in the
Tri-Cities and snowing today (Saturday) which will make
travel home for a lot of people, not a fun experience.
Merry Christmas to all,
-Gary BREHM ('64 Lion/Honorary Bomber) ~ Richland, where it's
snowing and in the 20s!

articles on and about the Atomic City and its denizens. I
didn't photograph everything, only those photos of old
Richland Bombers from Columbia High School, land mark
buildings and articles with names of Bomber mothers &
fathers. I've attached a few from January 13th, 1961. If
anyone would like a copy of them just email and I'll send

Re: Fall [tumble]
Maren I am so sorry you took a bad fall. That seems to be a
regular for people in my age group. I used to fall on ice
from time to time but never from pure carelessness. I have
taken three this year. The last one being the most damaging!
I was teetering on a 1 foot stool, nothing to hang on to
trying to put our Scrabble Game in the top of the closet. The
stool started wobbling and over I went backwards. I went to
Emergency as I could tell something was wrong. Concussion!
And I am still having problems from it. I don't know if you
ever totally recover. We have neighbors in their 90s and
100s. These Scandinavians live forever. They were farmers
and drink lots of milk. I got to use that on my granddaughter
the other day as the 90 year olds fall quite often. The other
day head first down the stairs. No, no broken bones. So I
pointed this out to my granddaughter who had recently decided
not to drink milk anymore as she doesn't like the taste. I
talked her into putting a little chocolate in it, she is and
Gammie is happy!

I'm so sorry to hear about your son's fiance's death. Sounds
as though they did everything they could. Too bad that the CT
scan wasn't performed right away. This does give us all pause
to be more aware of the aftermath of a fall as we get older.
We don't think anything of it if it doesn't hurt much and you
can move around. You would think everything is fine. I'm glad
you can be there for your son now.

The little girl who sat there wide-eyed in the front row is
Kate, the 6 year-old daughter of Megan Johnson, the wonderful
actress playing Michael Thomas's '87' wife in our show. She
came two nights in a row, Kate did, and sat next to her
grandmother both shows, staring at me from her chair right
there in front of me. Because I am "Clarence" the angel, you
see. Whenever her mother would kiss Michael Thomas, she'd
cover her eyes with both hands. After the shows, we stand at
the large doors and hand out little colored bells to people
as they leave. On Saturday night, when "Clarence" handed
Katie her red bell, (her second), she grabbed hold of his
coatsleeve and wouldn't let go. Pretty neat stuff.

So it's about this same time every year when Walgreens
rolls out their back to school supplies and marks down the
Valentine candy that I realize a truly special event is on
the morrow. I'm not talking about the fluff that everyone
already knows, December 6th is so much more than just
National Pawnbrokers Day, National Microwave Oven Day and
National Gazpacho Day. And it's only a coincidence that
this year, 12/6 is falling on the first Friday in December,
National Bartenders Day. True, Roy Orbison joined the Choir

Boy Who Knows No Winter" DeJONG ('63) will celebrate wearing
one epically garish Hawaiian print flannel shirt on today the

of the nets on Saturday the 7th and last but not least Anita
CLEAVER Heiling ('63) will wrap up the long weekend with her

Re: Holidays are here
We have officially kicked off the holidays at the Glenn house
as of yesterday when we celebrated son Danny GLENN ('00) 38th
birthday. We always waited till his birthday was over so it
didn't get lost in Christmas. Hubby has most of the lights up
outside and I am starting on the inside this weekend but
first Danny's sons, ages 13 and 6 will join me at John Dam
Plaza for the lighting of the big trees and light show put on
by City of Richland, then we will scurry across GWWay to
Howard Amon (Riverside as we remember it) Park for the
lighted Boat Parade. I'm hoping the fog lifts so we can see
them better this year. The boys want a trip to Shari's for
cocoa and hotcakes for dinner so will fill their tummies and
they will spend the night. Getting up bright and early to
begin baking about 4 different types of cookies is on the
agenda for tomorrow. Next weekend 12-15 of the cousins - my
littles and sis Nancy BEARDSLEY Lucke's ('65) bigger littles
will gather to decorate said cookies at my house. I usually
am still finding sprinkles in the carpet in March... but they
have fun. I have had kids decorating sugar cookies at my
house for almost 50 years... such a fun family tradition and
at least two or three start asking in October what day we
decorate cookies. This picture was taken last year...

season pour into your hearts and homes.

Vietnam) we arrived at Pearl Harbor March 27, 1969. How do
I know that date? Because late at night I was on watch in
radio and saw a message that said that Dwight Eisenhower
was "doing better," already knew he was in the hospital.
The next morning it was announced that he had died. All I
had to do was look up that date and subtract one.
For the three days we were there Jap Zeros were flying
around, seems like most of the day. There were nine planes,
three groups of three. flying in a big circle and diving on
what I was told was a mock-up of a battleship. They were
filming the movie "Tora! Tora! Tora!" Across from us was
moored an old destroyer escort, and I wondered if it was
going to play the part of the USS Ward. Guess I should have
taken a picture and compared it to the movie. I had long
known that the first shots fired at Pearl Harbor were not
by Japan, but by the United States, but in those days never
bothered to remember the ship's name.
The History Guy has a YouTube video about the USS Ward I
found quite interesting, especially what happened to the
Ward exactly three years later.

Re: Inspiration personified
Today, December 7th, 2019, a date which will be celebrated in
all of Bomberdom! Not to play down his team mate who shares
this date of birth, but I must say that I look up to this guy
in so many ways. Always as that Bomber kissing the Bomb at R2K:
http://allreunions99352.tripod.com/ss/24-00001.htm
as the player on the floor leading Bombers to victory over
victory; as the Marine Corps Captain who returned from war.
He is one of those who understands gratitude even in the
hardest of times. In that way as in many others he is my
hero and an inspiration to us all. I am in such awe of
this man and am proud to call him friend. Happy Birthday

Hello, Bomber Friends!
Re: It's a Wonderful Life
I attended with my cousins and highly recommend this great
production! Michael Thomas (son of Larry BRACKENBUSH ('58)
and Barbara SESLAR Brackenbush ('60), acted his role to
perfection. Our own Terence Knox, aka Terry DAVIS ('65) was
the angel who kept "George Bailey" (Michael Thomas) from
committing suicide when Bedford Falls' bank was failing.
Terry won his wings by showing Michael the misfortunes that
would have happened if Michael had never been born. A
talented cast played several roles apiece, including
Christmas song-leading (with audience participation) and
constant sound effects. Applause, laughter, and good humor
lifted our spirits.

Re: "portable telephone"
I found a box of old newspapers I had kept from about 1973-
76. I did not even remember having them but have been going
through them and gotten rid of most of them. I noticed how
cheap most things seem to be, not really because we also made
less money in those days. I quart of motor oil was 49 cents,
but 19" TV sets were $400 to $500. Just a few days ago at
Wal*Mart I saw 55" TV sets with Roku for a little under $300
and I think they were either LG or Samsung, so that is one
thing that has really gotten cheaper, especially if you count
inflation.
Also, I come across a cartoon "Ponytail" in the Tri-City
Herald July 5, 1973 which I found interesting considering how
things have developed since then.

To All Bombers,
April 28, 1961 issue. Kippy BRINKMAN ('62) is in one of the
photos. A few years back I had the opportunity to speak with
her father. He was an original Hanford worker in 200 West.
He was there the day 106-T tank collapsed upon 5 chipper
welders. He actually heard it! Father Sweeny delivered last
rites to the men under that tank. This was the only time an
un-cleared person was allowed access to the construction
area. Mr. Brinkman was also part of the construction forces
that built the 234-5Z facility. I enjoyed my conversations
with him, I wish I had met him several years prior.

Re: Subscriptions
I love seeing those pictures from The Richland Villager. I
actually remember the ones with Kippy and my friend, Georgia
RICE ('65).
At one time, my family subscribed to The Richland Villager,
The Tri-City Herald, The Spokesman Review, The Seattle PI,
the Saturday Evening Post, Life, Look, Reader's Digest,
all at the same time; and that's only what I can remember.
Can you see why I am not interested in any electronic
publications? I subscribe to paper copies of the Herald
and the magazine, THE WEEK.
By the way, concerning subscriptions to the Herald, when I
received my renewal notice for 2020 last week, I spoke to
Karen in Kennewick. She told me that they do not have a
special price for us elderly folk. But I did not consider
$275.60 for the year unreasonable. Again, I don't care two
hoots about the electronic access, even though I have to have
it. I have a very, very, dependable delivery man, too. And
does anyone know where the saying "two hoots" comes from?

To All Bombers,
August 3 1962 wasn't much for photos of former Columbia
High students. Kippy BRINKMAN ('62) is in one, the other
is Alan FISHBACK ('61-RIP). Al as many know worked in the
laboratories in the 200 areas. No doubt he knew Mary ROSE's
('60) mom as well as the rest. His first assignment was PUREX
Lab a bit of training and off he went pipetting (see PUREX
attachment) radioactive solutions, no that's not Al. It is an
open faced hood in the PUREX Lab. Great place to work, I had
a LOT of fun there!
He was my supervisor for 6 months in 1984, while I respected
Al, we butted heads... that's all I'll say. I remember one
story he told me about a locomotive race? Anyone remember
locomotive races from the '50s? He was competing against
someone from Kennewick. I remember Al's comment "no way a kid
from Kennewick is gonna beat someone from Richland" He was
competitive and proud to be a Bomber to say the least.

I'm still hurting. Does it just take longer to heal the older

I want to tell you about Agnes (my wife) and My Angel.
Due to my extensive surgeries, money has been very tight for
us. We received a water shut off notice from the city and I
did not have the money to pay it. I went to city hall to try
to get an extension. On the way up to the office a middle
aged woman, very ordinary looking, got on the elevator behind
us and we greeted each other as is normal to do.
When we were at the counter the woman stood by watching us.
When the clerk told us there was nothing they could do, the
water would be shut off that day the woman just said "I'll
pay it".
She paid my $170.00 water bill and when I asked her name she
said "Just Sara"
I asked how I could pay it back, she said "Pay it forward"
Agnes and I both started crying and it took some time to
really understand what happened.

Re: Happy, Happy... Everything!
Soggy Solstice, Happy Hanukah, Merry Christmas Everyone!
Don't consider writing, much... but I was on the receiving
end of a memory, after being requested (challenged?) to pull
up a reason for gratitude at a Solstice gathering... a day of
steady rain that brought a couple of local underground
streams to the surface for a few days (THAT kind of rain).
Eyes closed, aimlessly drifting through the old noggin... but
before dropping off (and publicizing my change of state by
snoring) I had a flash from an apparently unforgettable
moment in an 8th grade PE class at Chief Jo, where we were
learning to waltz. The teachers had us randomly creating
partners for very short periods, hoping to give us a sense
of the differences that different partners can make (I'm
guessing)... and that had me paired briefly with Nancy
WESTON ('61). She looked at me & prepared for this ordeal
without expression, and I took her hand as the music started,
and made my first move... in the classic "box-step" that
we were being taught. After about 3 seconds I remember
attempting a turn, and she followed... and what followed
after that was a feeling that we were one body-mind gliding
through space... perhaps without any support, or music, or
considerations of gravity... just a rhythmic embrace...
that probably lasted a few seconds. The music stopped, and
I guess we did, too... and stood apart, and I HOPE I thanked
her. I remember a small, fleeting smile, & we were on to.. .
"other things".
It's still there, though... all these years later... and if
I close my eyes can still almost recall the mindless joy of
bodies moving in a unison. So precise and So delightful that
any conscious thought was unneeded... unnecessary... out of
the question! Whew! (Maybe that memory-enhancing ginkgo
tincture is for REALS!)
So, Seasonally-adjusted GREETINGS & Best Wishes to ALL, from
this recalcitrant, mischievous & often cranky old Hippie!
(and I'd be bringing pain-killers to you - & Arnica, too - if
you weren't so far away from Vashon Island, my dear Editor!)

Maren, your Windows 7 computer is not useless. Microsoft's no
longer supporting Windows 7 simply means they won't fix any
future bugs that are found (not likely at this point) or
provide any further security updates for any future
weaknesses that might help hackers. If it's been working
fine in recent days, it will continue to act fine.
[I won't/can't take a chance of losing any
Bomber data that's on the Wi7 aptop. -Maren]
Now I must admit I don't trust Microsoft. I'm still using
Mail 2012, and it began acting strange a few months ago. It
started restoring old emails that I had deleted months or
even years ago, as early as 2015. Now where did those old
emails come from? I contacted peoplepc.com and they assured
me once an email is deleted from their server (when it's
downloaded to my computer) it is forever gone. The only
scenario that I can come up with is, there's some hidden
routine in the email software that saves random emails in a
secret file when I delete them, and restores them at trigger
points after support for the program is discontinued. I
suspect Microsoft may be using this ploy to try to force us
stuck-in-the-past users to go to the current Windows 10 mail
program (whatever that is - I don't use it). Who knows? Other
Mail 2012 users have reported this problem as well.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Maren and all Bomber

Re: Learnin' to dance
Thank you, John BROWNE ('61). Your vivid memory of learning
to dance the first two weeks of PE in 7th grade left me
standing out there on the Chief Jo gym floor in my sock
feet--Andy Williams' "Moon River" or Patti Page's "Allegany
Moon" playing on the record player that was set up on the
lower bleachers over on the girls' side.
Yes, the box-step fox trot--although it was more of a slow
shuffle than a trot.
We learned a lot during those two weeks. O, we'd most of us
done a little slow dancing at grade school patio parties with
Marion Perkins '65' and Laura Parker '65', but this was
different. Very different.
These girls were SEVENTH and EIGHTH graders, and there was
a whole bleacher-full of them--30 or 40 of them--and most
them from over at Jefferson, with names we'd never heard of
before: BUSHNELL, GLOVER, GOSLIN.
O my!
And we'd have to walk all the way across that polished gym
floor in our socks and ask one of them to dance. Everybody
had to.
Everybody WANTED to. As soon as the Andy Williams record
started, we'd sort hustle across to the girls' bleachers and
approach.
"Would you like to dance?"
Those were the magic words you had to use.
"Would you like to dance?"
And they had to say "Yes." Or nod an assent. They couldn't
say "No." Those were the rules.
"Would you like to dance?"
Or later on in the hour-long class, when we were more
comfortable, "Wanna dance?" was enough.
Unless she was an eighth-grader and you were in seventh.
In which case "Would you like to dance?" was still what you
said.
Those were the rules.

Terry DAVIS ('65) and John BROWNE ('61) sent delightful
accounts of sock hops that made me smile. It's heart-warming
to think about good times, past and present.
Our devoted Maren Smyth, and many of us, have taken tumbles

support as we limp around.
Many of us have 50-year-old houses that are deteriorating
just like our bodies. Inside my house three "essentials"
stopped working... a 4-ft. kitchen light, a toilet, and a
wash machine. The same friends who take me to Bomber

Without a doubt, the national and world scene underline the
pressing need to be friends and neighbors.

Re: Markable
To: John BROWNE ('61)
You'll remember the old auditorium, with its small,
curtained stage. They used it mostly for study hall. Real
crowded. I was a Soph, Mark was a Junior, and we'd just
performed 3 one-act plays for the general student body. We
were excused from our next period's class to help put away
props, etc. So we were just goofing around onstage with the
curtain closed.
The next period study hall had already filled the
seats. Packed house. You could hear them out there on the
other side of the curtain, shuffling their feet and slapping
books down on their desktops.
Mark was still in costume, sort of -- a pair of gym
trunks and T-shirt, barefoot.
He was lounging on an old sofa from the last one-act
play. He was on his back, arms behind his head, and one big
foot propped up on the back of the sofa. I remember thinking
to myself how big his feet were, as I grabbed the pullyrope
and yanked open.
the little curtain.
I'm guessing there were 200 students out there,
including Mr.Carlson with his clipboard. And then Mark Browne
scrambling across stage in his gym shorts and barefoot.
Standing ovation.

Greetings,
I'm about to leave for what has become an annual 4-5 weeks in
Chiang Mai, Thailand doing yoga every day, enjoying the food,
the culture, and the people. (And, being a computer person, I
work part-time while there.) In contemplating growing up in
Richland and being a Bomber while walking on the beach (I
live just north of San Diego, by Del Mar), Richland was a
very special place in which to live and grow up. There are
two very favorite memories:
- Delivering the Tri-City Herald in the dark on Sunday
morning in the winter after a snowfall. The snow muffles all
noise, and the feeling is just serene. It was cold, but I
loved those Sunday mornings, especially just before
Christmas.
- Being in band in 9th grade at Carmichael and in 10th grade
at RHS with Armand Boatman as director - band, orchestra,
pep band, marching band, stage band; it was all fun and
interesting. Mr. Boatman exposed me to many types of music,
and that appreciation has lasted to this day. I gravitate
to jazz. I especially remember orchestra for the musical
Oklahoma! in which I played 2nd clarinet and bass clarinet.
The bass clarinet mirrors a male tenor voice, and I recall
Randy Dreher was Curly. This was also the first time I ever
saw 64th-notes in the farmer's dance...oh my!
Thanks to my lifelong best friend, Gary TURNER ('71) for the
birthday wishes, for sharing my love of jazz, and for the
good fun we had "sailing" little willow twig boats down the
gutters on Humphries as we walked home from Marcus Whitman.
Merry Christmas to all, and a joyous Happy New Year 2020! --
P.S. If you are at all interested, I'll keep

Re: Ye Olde Col-Hi Auditorium
You might have hit the Mother Lode by opening for comments of
the old Col-Hi Auditorium...
In 1960 the gendarmes and hall monitors never discovered
whodunnit. But one evening a lawn sprinkler hose was fed
into the exterior stairwell exit at the front end of the
auditorium. The next morning the stairwell was full to the
brim against the door, with all of the exterior concrete steps
covered, at least three feet deep up to the lawn and sidewalk
level.
I recall arriving for first-period Study Hall to discover that
there is a great rule of equalization or entropy threading
through all of the physical universe. Which is to say that
the lower edge of the door was not flush with the floor.
The entire front of the interior auditorium, too, was now a
lake at the very same level as the filled outside stairwell.
Symmetry! The stage level was still dry, but on the lower and
sloped seating floor, the first several rows of seats were in
varied stages of inundation, and totally so for the front row.
Also that year, another demonstration of natural science
presented itself for examination, again in this Auditorium.
At the very top of the high windows along the north side,
there had been for some time a hole in the glass, about the
size of a softball. My first-period seat was against the wall
and directly below this hole which for some time had captured
my wandering attention. But, then, on a cold night a swarm of
bees had split from a hive and then found refuge inside the
auditorium. A dense mat of thousands of bees all clinging
together against the inside surface of the glass. This
spectacle about twenty feet directly over my head.
Mr. Stell, the photogenic vocal-music instructor, doubled
as the assigned roll-taking-authority for first period.
He assured the seated and spread-out students---always in
alternate seats between alternate empty rows---that all would
be well if everyone just went about his/her business. The bees
won't move; that's the way bees are. And stay silent...
But, what if the predictable natural world is subject to
random perturbations? According to the "butterfly effect,"
under the right conditions a very small alteration of some
sort, like the fluttering of a butterfly wing, can cause a
tornado.
With a rubber band in hand I tested this hypothesis by
firing a tight wad of paper upward toward the ceiling. Good
elevation. Then tried again with revised coordinates. Not long
before a few inert bees started buzzing. Nothing threatening,
but then a few more, and then enough to arouse some rumbling
among the students below as well. Before you know it, it was
clear that those bees were not hibernating.
Stell urged silence again and moved everybody to the safety
of the opposite half of the auditorium. The bees settled down.
All this motion caused by only a small rubber band. Archimedes
surely smiled upon the scientific fixation of Col-Hi. With a
long enough lever (or maybe a big enough rubber band), he
would have moved the world.
-Pete BEAULIEU ('62) ~ Fessing up to the bees, but not a clue
about the lakefront seats.

Re: Muscles, our neighbor
I was catching up on some Back SS reading and came
across the series of entries about Muscles, from our old
Perkins-VanGiesen neighborhood. He lived right there on the
NE corner of Perkins and VanGiesen, just across the street
From Wayne MYERS ('62) and kitty-corner from Jimmy HEIDLEBAUGH
('65). So Jimmy and I would watch him take off from his side
yard on his bicycle, and then later maybe watch him land when
he came back.
Hey Hey Ho Ho.
A very fancy bike. Horns and streamers. And he went
EVERYwhere, it turns out, and everyone knew him.
Muscles. Sonny.
Just reading those several days of entries in SS, I was
surprised at just how far and wide he roamed. Silly us, in
Jimmy's front yard, thinking he was somehow more our friend
than anybody else's. Ya know? Like our jealous little minds
could ever even guess what a wide following Sonny had.
But still... Wayne knew him best, Jimmy knew him second
best, and I was third.
The house is still there. One of the original old farm
houses in the middle of what was once a large cherry orchard--
before the pre-cuts and pre-fabs were put in. And later, Jason
Lee.
The big house had a screened-in porch, where Sonny had
one or two pet monkeys. You'd sometimes see their shadows
moving around up inside there when you went past, even though
we never actually went up into Sonny's yard to get a closer
look through the screen. We just didn't. Nobody did. It
wouldn't have been polite
Plus, I was scared of those monkeys.
I was surprised to read that old Richland Villager
article from 1961 about Sonny coming back to town for a visit.
Without his bicycle.
I almost couldn't believe it.
And maybe I don't. I mean, who was he with? It only
said "friends."
Because Wayne knew him best, and Jimmy knew him second
best. And I was third.
And I wonder what he must've thought when they drove
him past the old house?

You never know when a where a blessing may show or perhaps

Christmas day about 12 noon, my wife came to my room and said
she did not feel well. Lightheaded and as if her body was
floating. Fearing ischemia, I dialed 911 and got her to the
hospital where for the next 6 hours they probed and x rayed
and did blood work etc, etc, etc.
She was released and we are just having a bowl of soup, too
late to cook the planned dinner. About 8 the ER doc called
to say he double checked the xRays. It seems we now have a
second patient in the house with lung cancer. How can we be
so lucky!
I had open heart surgery 19 years ago... was told then to
expect it to hold up for 10 perhaps 12 years. From a misspent
youth and a crashed motorcycle I have a terrible back so it is
difficult for me to lift anything over 25 pounds and that is a
strain. And I have non small lung cancer. (I was originally
told that I might last till summer of 2017) am on my 6th go
round with chemo and I am still here. But how in the hell am I
suppose to take care of a incapacitate lady? She is being set
up for lung surgery and may or may not return to ambulatory.

Monkey's names were Gaston, and Josephine. They actually had
a big screen cage out in back of the house. Big monkey, and a
smaller one. We didn't hang back there much because Josephine
would throw crap attcha, and make a lot of noise. Muscles came
outside when the monkeys were making noise to see what was
going on. Funny, but don't remember him saying anything
besides "hey, hey", and "ho ho". He used to ride by the pre
fab and stop sometimes, and pull on and off some leather
gloves he was wearing. But don't remember him saying much.
Remember getting my hair cut once at Ganzel's in the parkway
next to the PO, and seeing Muscles walking in and out, and
talking with the guys there. I was surprised to see him so
far from home, but he acted like he was at home. Funny memory
stuff, but I remember his mom talking to him out in back
of the house, and it surprised me that she only called him
"Sonny" There was a kid named "Squeaky" that lived across
Van Gieson, and he helped clean the monkey cage.

Re: Study hall
All the talk about the school auditorium being the study hall
brought back a memory.
I remember sitting next to who I now believe was Bill WILEY ('54).
I don't remember how it started but we drew cartoons to each other.
I would draw a figure and then pass it to him; he would then
add to it and pass it back.
This back and forth went on till study hall was over.
By then we had a real ongoing story in that sheet of paper, at
which point it was wadded up and thrown away.
This wasn't a daily routine; I can dig deep enough in the old
brain box to account for only a couple occasions it happened.
Like I said I'm not sure it was bill WILEY but knowing how he
was the resident artist at the time, I'm thinking it was him
as his artistry was professional compared to what I was
drawing.
Anyway, wish I had the forethought to save those scraps of
paper.. But alas, I didn't.
'
On another note, I too would see "Muscles" here and there
about town. But my occasion to meet the monkeys was one day
while walking home from Chief Jo.
I happened by Muscles' house and the monkey cage. Long story
short, I got too close and a monkey grabbed my glasses and
pulled them inside the cage.
The monkey and I were making enough noise to bring the Mom
out. She gave me the what for and went inside and got what was
left of my glasses.
Now I have to go home and explain to my dad what happened to
my glasses...

Re: Ye Olde Col-Hi Auditorium
I don't think it was in 1960 (unless it was done twice)
because we did not move to Richland until 1961 and I remember
the floor of the first few rows of the auditorium being
flooded with water. We had assigned seats so those people had
to sit in a different area. I think it took three of four,
maybe more days for it to drain and dry out.
I was also there for the bee swarm, seems like they started
flying around about half-way through study hall period.
Another time in study hall a white cat came in and right at
center stage, near the front of the stage laid down and
started licking itself; eventually went to sleep there.
One year was the fad of flipping bottle caps, and as the clock
became a target, that was not a good place to be seated.
Fortunately I was on the side closer to the windows, and the
bees.
Re: "True" magazine
Still going through my stuff trying to downsize and came
across an issue of True magazine dated January 1971. Not a
magazine I normally read and it was published when I was in
the Navy aboard a ship being decommissioned. Don't know how,
why, or when I got it, but it does have "Lounge" written on it
in magic marker. Anyway, right on the cover it says "Isaac
Asimov Predicts: MAN HAS ONLY 30 YEARS TO LIVE" That would in
2001--doggone it, one of the biggest events in human history
and I missed it!!!

Re: Hanford worker bus Research question
Hi Maren,
Happy New Year! (almost), and:
I would appreciate any information from Sandstorm subscribers
about the location of the bus lot in Richland for workers
heading out to Hanford (1940s-'60s). Was there one main bus
lot? Did workers get dropped off by spouses at the bus lot,
then take the bus out to the site? Or, were there bus stops
where workers could wait for the bus to come by? Many thanks
to you and your readers for any info.

Re: Study Hall
All of this discussion regarding study hall got me thinking.
My sophomore year (fall of '66) they did away with the
"required" study hall period. Everyone had 1 period off (mine
fell 3rd period as I recall) and you could do with that hour
what you wanted to do. The library was always pretty crowded
so I ended up with others in the cafeteria. Some studying got
done and at times good conversation and games as they weren't
monitored and no attendance taken.

Re: Hanford worker bus research question
I'm sure that you will get a lot of answers to these
questions. Mine:
In the '50s, when I was growing up at 77 McMurray and attending
Jefferson and Chief Joe, I remember the buses driving up and
down many streets including ours, picking up workers, all of
whom carried big shiny silver or black lunch boxes. The buses
were cream and another color, usually maroon or blue, maybe
some green. Each bus had a sign telling which area it was
going to. I do not remember wives driving husbands to the bus
lot, but maybe some did. There were three shifts, and I doubt
that wives drove husbands to the bus lot for the evening and
overnight shifts. Likely they were busy at home with the kids.
Most families had only one car, so the workers did not drive
out to Hanford, as I recall (maybe they were not allowed to).
Many wives did not drive.
In the '80s, when my husband and I lived at 1508 Thayer and
both worked at Hanford, in addition to single drivers and car
pools that went either to the bus lot or all the way to the
Hanford Area, there were bus stops on some of the main
streets. One picked us up right in front of our house (between
Torbett and Van Giesen).
The bus lot was in the 1100 Area, which was just north of town
on the "Stevens By-Pass Highway." Sometimes we drove to the
lot and parked the car for the day to get on the correct bus,
depending on where we worked. In the daytime, the lot was
filled with thousands (?) of cars. Few people worked at night,
and the lot was filled with hundreds of buses. The bus lot was
divided into sections, depending on the area in which you
worked.
In the late '70s and early '80s, there was a group of guys in
the 2750 Building in the 200 East Area who were working on
developing a train that would replace the buses and carry
the workers from North Richland to the various areas,
significantly cutting down on the road traffic. They were a
jolly group and had a song about the Hanford Railroad. Nothing
came of the project.
Re: Study Hall
I was at Col-Hi 1957-'60. In those days fewer hours of school
were required for graduation. We had 6 periods, and if you
only had five classes, then you spent an hour in study hall,
which was in the auditorium and was usually proctored by a
teacher. It was only "required" in that you had to be
scheduled to be someplace and were not allowed to wander
around. I took extra classes, like languages, or helped the
French or chemistry teacher, and only had study hall one of my
three years there.
I think I remember detention being held in the cafeteria, but
am not sure because I never went.
A lot of school activities happened after 6th period, like
play practice and sports. When my kids were in school in the
late '80s and early '90s, more class hours were required for
graduation and for college. There was a zero hour for early
risers and those who wanted to take seven classes or six plus
study hall.

Re: Hanford worker bus research question
The buses picking up employees travelled all over the Tri-
Cities area and beyond from bus stops everywhere - I'm pretty
sure no one had to walk more than 3-4 blocks to the nearest
bus stop. And they weren't air conditioned: I remember one
summer on a Friday, probably in the late '50s, when Richland
tied for the high temp in the nation at 115 degrees, and we
were supposed to leave for vacation at a Pacific beach when
Dad got home. He was so wrung out from the heat on the bus
that we didn't leave until the next morning. I believe that
was also before we had real air conditioning; we made do in
the 4-bedroom ranch house with a swamp cooler in the family
room addition, until we had air conditioning installed a
little later. We take so much for granted these days ...

Re: bus
As I recall my Dad caught the shuttle bus one street behind us
on Snow (We lived on Stanton). He rode the bus (all shifts)
out to the bus lot and '64 changed to one going to where he
worked. I think the whole process took about l l/2 hours.
Sometimes the guys played cards on the bus (portable surface).
Of course they all had lunch buckets. Don't recall where the
bus lot was.
