Re: "Reach For the Sky" by James Scott, aka Bill SCOTT ('64)
What a great book. 433 pages and once you start you can't put
it down. Dear old Amazon had it to me in one day.
I love telling people is that James Scott went to the same
high school as I did (only a lot of years after me)
I highly recommend that you go out and buy it. Pick a nice
comfortable chair, a good cup of coffee and enjoy. Now I'm
wondering is Bill (aka James) a pilot also? The technical
stuff about taking off, etc. never knew pilots had so much
to go through. All I can say is thanks for a full day of
entertainment. I'm pretty sure my son in Idaho is ordering the
book too. And yes Bill (aka James) I am writing Amazon with my
words of praise also.
Re: Sewing Machines
Now back to other conversations we have had about sewing
machines. At one time I had 3. My mother-in-law's pedal
machine, which I could never master, a regular Singer that I
did sewing for my kids and me while they were still tiny and
not smart enough to gripe about mother's choices, and I had a
featherweight, which I stored at my folks' house cause our
house in Ellensburg did not have room for everything. When I
went to retrieve it from my mother I found out she had given
it away. Then when I moved to Woodcrest I had no room for any
sewing machines (and I don't sew any more) I decided to donate
the pedal machine and my heavy Singer to the homeowner's
association as gals were meeting every week to make blankets.
I thought it would be a great tax write off. Found out I am
part of the homeowner's association and I can't donate to
myself. Anyway then later I decided I needed a sewing machine
in the house for mending, etc. Bought a new Singer and now
whenever any organization I belong to is making their own
raffle tickets. I take the full sheets and run a nice trail
between the ticket portion and the stub portion and you have a
ready-made easy tear off on all tickets. (don't think that is
what Singer meant for me to do, but it sure works well)
Love reading the Sandstorm every day, please keep your
comments coming in.

happy about temperatures next week of below (not above) 80°.
(they have revised it already and all temps given are 80°-81°,
no more 70s which were in the forecast.)
-Helen CROSS Kirk ('62) ~ Well, it's only 75° outside at 1pm

Not too long ago we had sewing and sewing machines discussed
in the Alumni Sandstorm. Today, July 31, "The History Guy"
posted on his YouTube channel "The Forgotten History of Sewing
Machines," so I thought post a link to his video.

Re: The fashion trend that didn't quite stick
About 1945 Charles Langs watched his wife having problems
adjusting the straps on her swimming suit to get an even tan
and got the idea to do away with the straps and use glue
instead. He teamed up with industrial chemist Charles Walton
from a company that later became 3M to develop an adhesive
that would hold but not leave a sticky residue when removed.
After four years they applied for a patent on a formula that
would hold even it the wearer dived off a 10 foot high diving
board. The May 16, 1949 Life magazine had an article about
them saying they were expecting to sell 200,000 a day. However
women didn't care for them, especially if they were allergic
to the glue, and by the time they received the patent in 1952
they already "had their day in the sun."

Hi to all my Bomber friends. I so enjoyed Ann Thompson, aka
Anna May WANN's ('49) post of 8/1/20.
As kids we used to always like to say "Rabbit! Rabbit!" on the
first day of each month before saying anything. Not to mention
chasing the mosquito trucks spraying insecticide to keep us
healthy (or so we thought)
Ann, I loved hearing of your sewing machine and thanks for
driving me to a couple of reunion meetings in the past. The
last being 2005 or 15 years ago.
So good to be a Bomber and my email is Msmanko@ICloud.com or
sometimes I use Msmanko@gmail.com. But windows 7 was no longer
supported by Microsoft and didn't have horsepower to Upgrade
my Hp5190 pavilion to Windows 10. It was a nightmare.
If all works out as planned I hope to be getting the thrill of
my life time this next Tuesday the 4th.
It will be just the mattress so I can start sleeping like a
King. It is probably more than 45 years old. My wife and
daughter are getting it for me as a special gift and am told
it was bought when we lived in Federal Way, Washington
before moving to Kirkland where we lived for 30 years and here
in Renton for the past 11. So that makes it 45 or maybe even
50 years old.

Re: The Life of Sewing
When my folks had died and I had to empty their ranch house on
Cottonwood, I donated Mom's old Graybar pedal machine to the
Kadlec Auxiliary (once known as the Pink Ladies). They had a
crew who sewed caps and blankets for new babies, etc. Now, it
was an OLD machine - but so were many of those volunteers.
They appreciated the machine and knew how to use it. I don't
know how many years it was in service.
Re: ONCE!
I love how our readers come up with the most arcane bits of
information. That article about the adhesive swimsuit bras!
Ick! They were just plain ugly - but had I been of age, I
probably would have tried them - ONCE!

Re: Past predictions of modern cell phones
I thought I had previously posted two "predictions" of modern
cell/smart phones.
The first was a photograph I took in April 1969 of a time
traveler and his smart phone published in the 4/2/2020 Alumni
sandstorm. I also sent that one to several people I was in the
Navy with and the ship's association historian/archivist, who
forwarded it to the editor of the association's newsletter and
it was published in the last edition of said newsletter.
http://alumnisandstorm.com/Xtra/Ham/200402_Time_Travel.jpg
The second was a cartoon I was sure I had sent in, but I have
spent 1 to 2 hours looking and can find no evidence of it
being published in the Sandstorm although it was filed in a
folder "for Alumni Sandstorm" on my computer. Going through my
old junk I had found this cartoon in the Tri-City Herald July
5, 1973 page 32. (don't know why I saved that issue) I cut it
out and recycled the rest of the paper, sort of a
prediction of the cell phone.
http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Ham/200803-Beach_Phone.jpg
Now, just today I came across this uncanny (and I do mean
uncanny) prediction of just what a modern smart will do in the
Tacoma News Tribune of April 11, 1953 by an AT&T executive.
https://kottke.org/19/11/att-exec-predicted-the-smartphone-in-1953
-Dennis HAMMER ('64) ~ Just think, in 1953 we had to turn a
crank and tell the operator what number we wanted...
ours was three digits. Wait a minute, I'm not sure we
even had a phone in '53, that may not have come until
'54 or '55.

I can remember Old Dick Tracy comic strips of him using a
remote wrist watch size phone. I also recall the use of Paint
in spray cans being used in several plot lines in that same
comic strip... from the early 1940s. It was a Star Trek use of
flip phone / communication devices that doomed the early cell
phones to that design.

Whether you are a pilot, or not, which I am not, I found this

The history of flying and the history of World War II was most

I have been enjoying a vacation in hot Reno, Nevada with my
oldest son and his 2 sons out here. Plus their big poodle,
Met some friends for lunch at Tahoe over the weekend. The
place was packed. Except for the fact everybody was wearing
masks, you would never know there was a pandemic going on.
Actually the temperatures here and in Indiana are pretty much
the same, the amount of humidity is about reversed: 16% out
here, 50% and higher back in the midwest, but no tornados or
earthquakes where I live so I can't complain.
My other grandkids are helping their folks take care of our
cat and water my plants.
But as with all vacation and after all the planning, it will
soon be over.
Keep washing your hands and stay safe, everybody.

Re: Treadle Sewing Machines
I guess I might as well get in on the treadle machine stories!
My grandmother taught me to sew, at age 5, on her Singer
treadle sewing machine. She put a wooden box on the pedal
and a "Monkey Ward catalogue" on the chair so I could reach.
I STILL sew, somedery, but for a few years I was a
'professional' at a bridal shop in Denver and at home for
customers everywhere we lived. I made most of my girls'
clothes and some of the boys' clothes. My eyesight won't let
me do the intricate things that I used to do nor the free hand
'machine embroidery' that I did for awhile... I just gave
away 5 big black garbage bags of fabric to a hospice here in
Texarkana that makes gifts for their patients... and still
have a lot left. I now use a 45 year old Elna SU that has
'cams' for decorative stitches, but no embroidery.

I know our late brother and favorite pyrotechnician, Larry
MATTINGLY ('60-RIP), got a lot of us fired up about fireworks.
I will never forget the honor he gave me of setting off the
fireworks show at R2K. Or at least starting it. I handed it
over to someone else somewhere in the middle as I was so
focused on punching the buttons that I couldn't see what was
happening in the sky! It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime
experience.
So of course the first person who came to mind in a big way
when I watched this video was Larry, then Jill, then the other
Bombers out there who were at R2K... or not!
So before you watch, here's the story. We all know that the
Tokyo Olympics were postponed to at least next year due to
COVID-19. What most of us don't know is that the fireworks for
the opening ceremony had already been designed and bought.
Apparently those things don't keep well for very long (think
Beirut... or don't!), so they decided to invite the good
people of Tokyo to enjoy them. Note the backdrop of Mount
Fuji. Gorgeous!
Larry, this one's for you. Enjoy!

Re: A little bit of History and a Tennessee connection
Benton County was created from what were then larger versions
of Klickitat County and Yakima County on March 8, 1905 and
was named after U.S.Senator from Missouri (1821-'51) and
later U.S. Representative (1853-'55) Thomas Hart Benton.
And now the Tennessee connection.
The village of Leiper's Fork along the Natchez Trace (near
present day Franklin, TN), was an important travel route for
Native Americans and early European-American settlers. The
area was settled in the late 1700s by settlers from North
Carolina and Virginia who had received land grants as payment
for service in the American Revolution. Colonel Jesse Steed
received a land grant of 2,504 acres that includes the site
of the village. He sold the area to Jesse Benton, who
established a homestead. His son, Thomas Hart Benton, who
later was to become U.S.Senator from Missouri, moved his
family there in 1801 after his father's death. The village
was named after the stream that runs through it. Leiper's
Fork is a favorite destination for bicyclists, motorcyclists,
and people out for a Sunday drive.

Re: Something To Cheer You Up
So as some of you may have heard from previous SandStorm
inserts! My wife and I both suffer from lung cancer! Last
month I was informed that I had acquired some resistance to
my cancer thru 4 years of chemo plus 4 months of radiation.
My wife was diagnosed last March with her form of lung
cancer. We knew it was bad. As I am somewhat disabled, and
must use a walker to move around. Thought I still retain
certain mobility and am able to perform some duties around
the house, ie: cooking, some laundry, grocery shopping,
and I drive as always reasonably well. Whereas my wife had
spiraled into an abyss and needs assistance at almost every
level. She no longer drives, in fact needs help to get to the
car to go receive her treatments.
Well yesterday afternoon, I was informed they are stopping
her chemo treatments as it is now pointless and as Frank
Sinatra once sang "and now the end is near". We are having
hospice come in and take some of my burden of caring for her.
Regardless of how I may have spoken of her these last few
years, she is a child of the universe.no different than any
of us and I am having some difficulty in letting go:
I am sorry if this sounds as if I were the center of this
missile, not my intent, just a way to cope!
Also a way to vent!!!

Re: Surgery and "stayin' alive"
I know I have been rather quiet for the last few years. I
have been dealing with recuperating from some difficult
health problems. I was on the road to kidney dialysis with
stage 4 kidney disease. Numerous vertigo and blood pressure
problems landed me in the emergency room 10-12 times over the
last 4 years, along with two major spine problems that nearly
made me an invalid, unable to walk more than about 200 feet
with a cane, several other issues which left me with numerous
internal infections (had to consult infectious disease
specialists to find antibiotics that worked, were kidney
friendly and compatible with my numerous prescriptions)...
being hearing-impaired is probably the least of my concerns
since I have hearing aids (which are expensive and don't
totally fix your hearing). Then along came Covid-19, which
made me retreat to being a "hermit" because I was high-risk.
No church, choir practice, shopping, senior social activities
or much of anything.
I have been saddened by the number of fellow Bombers who
have left us and those burdened with cancer or other serious
health issues. Sooo, I was faced with a choice... give up,
become an invalid and burden my wife and son indefinitely
and wait to die, or wake up and do something to fix myself.
I chose the latter. My wife was my salvation! She decided
that we both would live... cut the SALT, poison foods,
exercise and stay active with our church family. I went from
a high of 260 lbs. over the last 15-18 years to my present
173 lbs. which is about my high school graduation weight. I
have raised my kidney function to level 3. Pointwise, 4 tests
over a year raised my gfr rate (glomular filtration rate-
kidney function by 11 points) and creatinine level lowered to
about 1.8 (normal is about 1.3 or lower). Blood pressure is
now perfect most of the time at around 90 to 120 over 60 to
70 with a pulse rate usually in the 60s. The blood pressure
dose of 6 pills was cut by half and I am now down to 2 of the
half-dose pills. Infections are way down.
Then came the 2 major spine problems... one was cervical disc
(6 neck discs) which were filled with large cysts and bone
spurs. The other was my lumbar 4 and 5 discs which had
stenosis and several other problems. Both sets of discs were
almost closing off the spine function. If they did, I would
be paralyzed from the neck down. I found the best spinal
neurological surgeon in the state. He apparently fixed Peyton
Manning's neck injury. I had my x-rays and MRI for my upper
and lower spine. I needed a cervical lamenectomy and double
fusion with titanium rods, hinges-braces and numerous screws.
My wife said she waited from 7am until 4:30pm. Guess it was
a lot worse than I thought! The incision was the length of
my 6 cervical discs (6 and one-half inches). Afterwards,
they put me in critical care, which was total hell... noisy
and intrusive with a number of personnel that became almost
totally invisible after 5pm. Result... medical prescription
dosage was way off and not timed properly which left me
shaking, sweating, and delirious... especially after an
entire day under anesthesia. Very little compassion or
competence. They would allow me no more medication.
Apparently, they thought pain killer would fix me. I didn't
ask for it but they injected it directly into the tube.
Suddenly, my feet went numb and it went numb up my legs, then
my chest all the way to the top of my head. I had chest pain
and was sweating and shaking. Red spots in my vision. Several
people came in and tested me for stroke and heart issues.
They could find nothing. I threw up and the condition
reversed itself. I asked them what the hell they injected
in me. They said "morphine". I told them I had never had
morphine before. My surgery was major so they were allowed to
use it. Severe allergic reaction! My blood pressure was very
high on a number of occasions. I felt like I was in a crazy
horror movie with no escape. The air conditioning was
freezing and then warm. A little later, a nurse came and
wheeled me to a normal, nice room on another floor with a
real bathroom! The nurses were kind and attentive. Wow! From
hell to heaven! I spent two days there and was fed large nice
meals. They even gave me bottles of Ensure... tasted like a
milk shake. By then I would eat or drink anything. By
Saturday, the blood had all drained out of my wound and they
said I could go home. I was able to get someone to pull two
staples out of my head. Guess someone didn't remove them
after the surgery. No big deal. Trip to the doc in 2 weeks.
Therapy at home. I can't do much for a good while. Oh, great!
Now 2 hurricanes and I'm a walking, talking vegetable. Take
deep breaths. I will survive! Next attraction... lumbar
surgery down the line. I'm telling the doc... no more
critical care. They nearly put me in critical condition. 3
hours of sleep there. I'm writing exact directions for my
meds next time and bringing a hidden cell phone! It was tough
with no glasses or hearing aids. I enclosed a picture. Don't
look if you have a weak stomach.

are right, it is not an easy or gentle story, and I will

I was encouraged at how much you attributed losing weight and
cutting out foods you knew you shouldn't be eating to a
return to health, only to be sidelined by such serious
surgeries for issues with your spine.
And suddenly, I was faced by the biggest shock of all, you
are a year younger than I am, based on the years we

how it feels to suddenly realize you are among the "Elderly",

Well, I want to wish all of my fellow "elderly" Bombers many

Re: A bit of humor while working from or just being at home
Greetings all!
've shared these with some friends. At first, there was some
novelty to the lockdown, adjusting to the change in patterns
and behaviors, cooking more at home, etc. It has become
somewhat wearisome, though, almost tedious. Being a computer
person, I work from home normally, and until the pandemic,
went into the office once a week. Now I have not been into the
office since mid-March. I am finding that I do miss the social
interactions, more than I expected. We are, after all, social
animals. Interaction on Zoom, WebEx, and Teams is good, but
not quite the same. I am more in touch with some of my family
now, so that is good.
At Carmichael and Col-Hi, we had a really good band director,
Armand Boatman. Because of him, I came to appreciate many
types of music. Here is a short video of another music
teacher...an example of why we love music teachers.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1f7OwFqTnco
The reaction by the people is priceless. One of the comments
suggested that it should be the instant Grammy winner for best
song 2020.
Some of you know that I have had opportunities to travel a
bit. I have spent 5-6 weeks each of the last eight Januarys in
Chiang Mai, Thailand, practicing yoga every day, enjoying the
culture, the food, and getting to know some of the people.
And, being a computer system admin, I work part-time from
Chiang Mai. (Chiang Mai is a very popular location for those
known as "digital nomads.")
It is a bit longer story (and I'd be happy to share), I also
have twice (spring 2016, autumn 2017) walked a 500-mile
pilgrimage route in Spain known as the Camino de Santiago to
the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela where the remains of
Saint James (the Greater) are said to be interred. I feel a
bit of a pull to return to Spain and make that pilgrimage
again, after the pandemic.
But where shall I go after the pandemic eases? Perhaps some
arithmetic will suggest a destination... and it won't require
remembering calculus from Calvin Gentle's class. See the
attached file to calculate your next travel destination. I did
not "get" Thailand or Spain... bummer.

Re: Travel Calculator

It doesn't matter how I figure it . . . I am still staying
home. Got to admit I was a little suspicious when I saw there
were 18 different destinations, but only 9 numbers to work
from.
Re: Lock-down entertainment
When I first bought a DVD player, I think at Costco, I also
bought two movies. I don't remember one and the other was the
Disney classic "Snow White." The DVD player wasn't any good so
I took it back opted not to get another just like it. It was
awhile before I bought another one. So I pulled it off the
shelf and watched it again. I was no longer scared like I was
when I was a kid when she runs in to the forest and the logs
in the water seem to turn into gators. I was however struck by
one thing. These seven dwarfs work in a diamond mine where all
the diamonds are already cut and faceted and as big as your
fist, they make the Hope Diamond look like a chip, and they
are hauling them out in carts. Yet they cannot afford to hire
a housekeeper?!?!?! Upon further contemplation, while I always
assumed they owned that mine, perhaps they are just cheap
labor.
Re: Who was that masked man?
My bank no longer requires me to use the drive through, I can
now go inside, but I am required to wear a mask!!! Who would
have ever thought a bank would want you wearing a mask when
you enter their building?
Re: More stuff to do
I can't really call it entertainment, but I have been going
through my stuff, trying to get rid of some, better organize
the remaining, and hopefully find some things I have been
wanting to find for years. At the bottom of a box I found this
little thin metal oval shaped disk. Closer inspection shows
what looks like a little line scribed about one millimeter
around the outside and I realized it was a penny. Probably
about '55 or '56 some of us neighborhood kids were putting
pennies on the railroad tracks. Showed it to my daughter and
asked if she knew what it was and she said right off, "It's a
penny." Asked how she knew that and she said, "It looks like a
penny." Not to me It didn't, took me a minute or two to figure
it out, and I made it. Well me and the railroad. It was in a
box of stuff that was not that old, so maybe it was in
something like an envelope and fell out. I had never told her
about doing that and was surprised I even still had one of
them. I don't recall even seeing one after grade school.
Re: Rural Mailbox
I have a rural mailbox that was made by a Seattle company
which I can't find any information on the internet about so
they are probably on longer in business. It is very heavy
built and was only used for three years so it is in really
good shape. It is the size you most often see. I tried to yard
sale it over 30 years ago. If anyone living in the Tri-Cities
has use for it (it just would not be worth it to ship it
anywhere), you could come to my house in Kennewick and I will
unlock and block open the gate to the back yard, keep my
distance, and you can walk in and pick it up. It is only about
eight feet in and sitting on a sawhorse of the South side of
the house so it is in the Sun all day long and I have not
touched it in weeks. If the Sun is shinning better bring some
gloves because it will be hot. My dad painted his name on the
side, so you will have to do something about that, either
paint the whole mailbox, or mask off a square and paint that,
maybe in black, then paint your name.

Re: Some inspiration - creativity is thriving
Hi all, In this pandemic time of being more isolated than
normal, and with almost all entertainment venues being closed,
one can wonder whether creativity is alive. Turns out it is.
Since Mrs. Murphy's 1st grade class at Marcus Whitman, Gary
TURNER ('71) has been my closest friend. We share a love of
jazz, going back to band at Carmichael and Col Hi where he
played trumpet and I saxophone. Gary knows a LOT more about
jazz than I and I love talking to him about jazz. In our
conversations, he occasionally mentioned or referred to the
"West Coast Jazz e-mail group." I like west coast jazz, so I
finally asked him for a link to join, and in the first e-mail
I got from the group was the link below. Thirty-three trumpet
players from fourteen countries playing together in isolation
a new piece composed to honor frontline healthcare workers in
the COVID-19 crisis. Make it full screen, and raise the
volume...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eR_7P5_7kh4&feature=youtu.be
It is beautiful, inspiring... not only the music, the
performance, and composition, but how it was coordinated and
recorded. There is creativity all around us. And definitely
hope for the future.
(This inspires me to consider picking up a saxophone
again... just to try it.)
-Jim GEIER ('71)
P.S. One of the major inspirations and coordinators of
this and president of a group called "cancer Blows" ,
Mr. Ryan Anthony, passed away only two months ago.
Thank-you, Ryan Anthony...as you said, "there's nothing
more powerful than music"....may you rest in peace.

It was great to see you in person during your visit to
Richland. I miss our dear Edna, and in my mind I always see
the two of you together. I hadn't realized you were an artist
until you showed me a photocopy of the pencil sketch you made
of Edna in your earliest year together. You are truly devoted
- and multi-talented!

You wrote a humorous, sweet tribute to your sister Jackie COLE

Found today's [8/29/20] Sandstorm interesting as always.
I want to thank Jim GEIER ('71) for the musical tribute
YouTube presentation you shared with us on the Sandstorm. I
noted many of the performers were international performers
already, so this music has already been shared with the
greater public, I am sure. I found it to be very uplifting,
and I am glad I got to hear it.
To: Dennis HAMMER ('64)
Good luck with sorting through boxes, Dennis. I don't seem to
be motivated to go through mine, and I have several I should
go through, just for the pleasure I get in finding old things
that have meaning to me, but probably no one else.
Today [yesterday? -Maren] I am going with my son and his
family (my grandkids 2 and 3) on a drive-thru of a dinosaur
(spelling doesn't look right to me, but this is what spell-
checking gives me) exhibit. Even their teenage older sisters
want to go; It will be fun to be with my grandkids again.

Re: Jim GEIER ('71)
Thanks to Jim for posting that wonderful YouTube video of the
trumpet players. It was fabulous! I'm so glad we have this
avenue to share things we care about with others. It just
shows how diverse we really are in how we live and what we
care about. I don't click on all the links but some have
really entertained and intrigued me.
Re: Hurricane Laura
I was so glad to see my Sandstorm come through this week after
hurricane Laura slammed into Louisiana and Texas. I took it to
mean that Maren was safe and we could breathe easy. And then
the pictures started coming across my TV and my heart broke
for the devastation the folks there must be dealing with. My
prayers are certainly with them as they pick up, clean up and
begin putting life back together.
[Yes, SW Louisiana was hit hard by Laura...
and those of us who endured Hurricane Katrina
15 years ago on 8/29) understand all too well.
My heart goes out to those who were in Laura's
path. -Maren]
Re: Travel Calculator
I was so hoping for someplace new and interesting but here I
remain in good ole Richland and looks like that is where I
will stay for now. I did wander off to Portland a couple of
weeks ago for my daughter's wedding. This was a wedding I
never in my wildest dreams thought I would get to participate
in. I gave my daughter up for adoption in 1965, an act I
regretted from the get go but really had no choice in those
days. Fortunately, through an inattentive attorney, her family
learned my name and shared it with her after she was grown. On
her 40th birthday, 15 years ago, she decided to see if she
could locate me, googled my name and up popped the link to the
RichlandBombers alumni site with my graduation picture. She
knew as soon as she saw that picture, we were related... she
could be my twin at that age. Since then, we have grown to
know and love each other and she asked me to be the witness at
her small wedding to a wonderful fella. My sis, Nancy ('65)
traveled with me and got to share in the joy of that special
day. Just another reason to be glad for this wonderful
connection to classmates and friends.

Re: Pandemic goes on... and on... and on
It seems we have been trapped in our homes forever but I hope
each of you has found a good way to spend the time. I know
many have been cleaning out cupboards, closets and drawers...
I'm not one of them! My hubby helped me enlarge the garden
this year so have been taking care of the weeding... never
ending... and the harvest is beginning to pay off.
I am also still making masks and if anyone in Bomberland needs
a mask or two, please let me know and I am happy to mail them
off to you at no charge. Because of my health issues, I can't
do personal care for anyone but I can help keep them safe.
Just let me know your address and I will mail them off ASAP.

Well, here it is - the last Saturday in August and usually the
start of the college football season. The Pac 12 and Big 10
have opted to cancel their seasons, but I just learned that
the Big 10 is now considering a late start around Thanksgiving
time. If college football can manage it I'll be one very happy
Buckeye fan. My brother, John RUPPERT ('67), is a die-hard
rapid Dawg alumnus and we have a rivalry thing going every
year between my Buckeyes and his Huskies. I'll usually watch
college football all day long every Saturday during the
season. Not this year if nobody plays.
My grandson, Cameron JENKINS ('16), didn't get to play
baseball this summer and after spending the summers watching
him play since he was 4 years old, it was a real let down.
Both Cameron and his sister, Sydney ('19), are back at their
respective colleges with restrictions, but the campuses are
open with a mix of in class and online courses. Cameron's fall
baseball schedule is on track, so he should get to play.

Glad you are safe, Maren. Such devastation is almost
unbelievable! Wow! I have to admit I'm glad I'm not there
in person.
Re: Weather
Here it is the last of August and I had to turn the heat on
this morning! Used to be that August was our hottest month.
That was a long time ago when there was no air conditioning
in our schools.
Re: Sports
Out of desperation, I have been watching College Football
re-runs. Today (yesterday as you read this) it was Texas vs
Colorado in the 1990 Cotton Bowl. Now we will watch the
Mariners vs Angels. I just heard that the Mariners lost last
evening. We were at the home of a friend, playing Pinochle
so missed it. We are not observing the "stay home" thing as
religiously as some folks are. (No "cabin fever" here.) I
have sanitizer in my purse, in both cars and on the rail just
inside the front door. Masks everywhere, too. Yesterday I
bought another package of 50. I would like to think that would
be enough to last to the end of the pandemic but am pretty
sure it won't be. Sad.
Take care every one, be safe, and enjoy what ever you are
doing these days.

Your comment on banks requiring patrons to wear a mask
reminded me of a Far Side CARTOON. Three desperadoes on
horseback are hiding behind a bolder, ready to hold up the
stage which below already is passing by. Says the leader:
"We must be doing something wrong; I can hear the stage but
I can't see it." All three have their bandannas pulled up
over their eyes.
(Maybe this untested technique would also help us to not touch
our eyes? Dr. Fauci, call your office!)
More on lockdown...
There's the three-panel comic strip where the first face asks
the second, "what day is it?" Two blank stares in the second
panel. And in the third, the second figure says "what
difference does it make?" I'm reminded of a time on shipboard
when I was disconnected by the lack of reference points-only
a grey ship on grey water that hadn't changed in a billion
years, and under a grey sky. Had to sit down to calmly
deliberate past events to figure out even what month it was
in the real world (Autumn or Spring?).
As for human contacts today during SOLITARY CONFINEMENT,
written and thoughtful notes and letters are better than
tapping out Morse Code on prison-cell water pipes, or
similarly, tapping brain-stem emails and texts and then the
semi-automatic (so to speak) "send button", I think. Instead,
more of the pre-STEM human touch.
As one example, a few years ago an office colleague from the
1970s wrote to say the same thing and proposed that we write
LETTERS. What a peculiar idea, I thought at first. Now, in his
most recent letter he announced, (1) that he and his wife were
moving from Denver to Rochester, New York, within ten days,
(2) that they did not yet have a place to land, (3) that in
Denver their lease was up and most of their stuff was packed,
(4) that the Rochester condo market was tight, and (5) that he
was also scheduled for imminent surgery, and during the move
still would be recovering.
Modernday nomads at the age of 78. Last week I get only a
shotgunned email-it all worked out; they found a place back
near family. So, Dennis HAMMER ('64): This surely beats
sorting out your sock drawer! The real deal in lockdown is
this: yes, STAY AT HOME, BUT MOVE THE HOME!
This acquaintance (Max Power) for ten years was also in charge
of the state Department of Ecology's role in the Hanford
cleanup and packaging, and the possible move of all this other
stuff to an also undecided site, probably a Yucca Mountain
Repository in Nevada. And, in addition to letters, he also
authored the BOOK about such cleanups across the country,
"America's Nuclear Wastelands" (WSU Press, 2008). Did a book-
signing presentation and talk in Richland at the WSU Extension
building at about the same time. A very readable piece on the
history, science, litigation and politics.
